DUBAI TRIES TO SET THE WORLD’S TALLEST TOWER RECORD AGAIN We already know that one of Dubai’s most incredible architectural marvels is Burj Khalifa, that happens to be the world’s tallest building. The structure (2,722 feet) designed by Adrian Smith (Skidmore, Owings & Merrill) is nearly 1,000 feet taller than the World Trade Center (designed by the same firm). But people at Dubai don’t settle so easily, so they’re about to create an even bigger skyscraper. Santiago Calatrava’s Tower at Dubai Creek Harbor will be breaking records too in just a few short years. Dubai’s ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum laid the foundation stone of the new building at the ground breaking ceremony, the same where was announced that upon its completion in 2020, the landmark observation tower will measure in at a height slightly taller than Dubai’s own Burj Khalifa, making it the tallest tower in the world. CUSTOM NIKE ID KICKS PAIRED WITH POKÉMONS Pokémons are a big trend right now, we already know that, and this is the reason why two user interface designers are continuing the trend with ‘pokeID’ — a pairing of NIKEiD kicks with colorful cartoon characters. Gene Lu and Duncan Hoge have created Tumblr and Instagram pages exclusive dedicated to match sneakers to the likes of Squirtle, Snorlax, and Shinx. According to Designboom, the two designers of R/GA Portland invite tumblr users to customize a bespoke NIKE participants are asked to submit a style of shoe that best matches a character, based on its color, shape, and personality. The best thing about it? The designers have programed the page to link the Pokémon pairs directly to the NIKEiD site. This means that visitors can purchase their very own poké-shoe. LONDON’S NATURAL HISTORY MUSEUM TO BE REVAMPED One of the most visited museums in the U.K. will be revamped by Niall McLaughlin Architects and the landscape designer Kim Wilkie. London’s Natural History Museum has just won planning permission for a major upgrade. According to Architectural Digest, the plan lays out a series of new features, including a subterranean cloister, a wildlife garden, and a public plaza. Back in 2014, Niall McLaughlin Architects won a competition with this project, that will be completed in three different phases. First of all, the team will reimagine the area where most visitors arrive at the museum. Then, they will revamp the eastern grounds of the complex, which will involve landscaping a geological timeline of life on Earth. Lastly, the team will create a new wildlife garden (three times larger than the current garden) to be dedicated to plants and animals that thrive in cities around the world. Project to be completed by 2020 Via Architectural Digest.

2016 HOTTEST HALLOWEEN TREND: PUMPKIN DIORAMAS Is this hard to believe? According to HouseBeautiful, imaginative pumpkin dioramas are the biggest pumpkin carving trend for Halloween this year. Even though dioramas have been a kid’s go-to school assignment for decades, there’s something about this subject that we need to accentuate: this might be a great way for families to get crafty together. The best part of this kind of DIY projects is that this will put your imagination to work. The decor possibilities are infinite. You can fill your sweet pumpkins with spooky scenes, plants, creepy critters, Halloween candies and much, much more. Do you think this is not enough? Paint the pumpkins: if you want to add some drama, black will be the best option. If you don’t like the mess, you really should opt for a faux pumpkin in order to make this project extra easy, and of course, extra funny. Via HouseBeautiful IMAGE © LIA GRIFFITH

NEW PORT HOUSE IN BELGIUM BY ZAHA HADID ARCHITECTS Is now inaugurated the new Port House in Antwerp, a project which repurposes a derelict fire station as a new headquarters for the district. The project was developed by Zaha Hadid Architects and brings together the port’s staff previously working in separate buildings around the city. According to Designboom, the architecture takes the form of an elevated extension, designed to ‘float’ above the existing building. “Shaped like the bow of a ship”, the new structure has a faceted glazed façade pointing towards the Scheldt river and reflecting the changing tones and colors of the sky. While most of the triangular facets are transparent, some are opaque. This way the architects were able to control the amount of sunlight entering the building and, at the same time, it breaks down the volume of the new extension, giving panoramic views of the Scheldt, the city and the port Via Designboom. AN ICE MURAL PAINTED IN THE CANADIAN ARCTIC Sean Yoro also known as Hula) recently traveled to Baffin Island in the Canadian Arctic Archipelago in order to create something big (literally). The artist navigated the frigid waters for days in search of a piece of ice that would sustain the weight of himself and his team without cracking beneath them. Why? - You ask. To paint a larger-than-life portrait of a local Inuit woman. This artistic journey resulted in a short film documented by Renan and Taylor Ozturk, (produced by camp4collective).‘What if you fly’ offers an insightful and poignant look at the project’s progress, and the message that lies at its core. This was the most technical and remote location that hula has ever attempted a mural. It might be dangerous but it was worthy too. Via Designboom

MID-CENTURY MODERN HOUSE DESIGNS IN EUROPE Although the United States seem to lead the way when it comes to mid-century modern house designs, Europe is not that far behind and can also bring great examples to the table.
Heavily influenced by Scandinavian design back in the 40’s, mid-century design is also present in various house and interior designs across Europe. With that in mind, we decided to list a few of these modern homes, choosing only amongst the ones that are still on the market. Curious? Let’s take a look!

This mid-century modern house in Sweden is the perfect example of how this style still lives on. Also, the interior design was completely thought to perfectly fit the house design itself. Located in western England near Bristol, this beautiful modern house has a lot of open spaces, wide windows and a very mid-century outdoor design featuring a pool and everything! This luxurious three-bedroom apartment in Barcelona is an amazing example of how mid-century modern design can present such sophisticated, yet simple solutions for home design. That industrial design table mixed with the minimalist white chairs is a combination that works great with the bold red mid-century sofa across the room.

MID-CENTURY MODERN PIECES OF FURNITURE FLOATING IN THE WATERS OF FRENCH POLYNESIA Photographer Gray Malin’s new work series called ‘Art of Living’ aims to transform the way we traditionally experience design. Malin achieved this literally by putting some MidCentury Modern pieces of furniture floating in the turquoise waters of Franch Polynesia.
Iconic furniture designs created by Eames, Saarinen and Knoll are now floating at the top of a 15-foot square mirrored platform handcrafted with the help of local engineers in the waters of French Polynesia. ‘Art of Living’ photo work series - developed by Gray Malin - was photographed from a vantage point where the colossal Mount Otemanu presents a symmetrical and stunning backdrop and where the pieces are accentuated. The series places natural and manmade beauty side-by-side. By situating stylized interior design elements in an unexpected outdoor setting, the photographer is challenging viewers to interpret the art of design in a whole new way. You can buy all these incredible photographs at Gray Malin’s Website.

HOUSE TOUR: A RENOVATED APARTMENT IN PARIS INSPIRED BY FENG SHUI PRINCIPLES
Following Feng Shui principles, this astonishing decorating project called “The Shift” takes place in central Paris and features some special details, including retro brand DelightFULL’s lamps. Interior Designer Nicolas Berthou, from b3r2 design, was the artist behind the whole renovation – that had as much technical as ideal know-how.

APPLYING “FENG SHUI” TO HOME DECOR

Feng Shui (pronounced “fung shway”) is a Chinese ancient art that examines how the placement of things and objects affects the energy flow in every living environment, and how these objects interact and influence our personal energy. The aim of “THE SHIFT” project was to follow the owner’s life changes – both on the professional and personal levels. “He was trying to leave behind a very rational, cartesian, immaterial work environment and join a world of concrete creation and achievement”, explained Berthou, who calls himself a Feng Shui bio decorator. In order to accomplish that, designer’s first choice was to use fresh colors like lime and healthy materials such as mineral painting. To follow Yin and Yang (one of Feng Shui fundamental principles), designers interlaced structured flat colors with a freely decorative painting – combining modern urban decorative - easy to identify - with elements and classic pieces, like the dining table lamp.

ETTA wall lamps by DelightFULL inspired on Jazz singer Etta Jones - were chosen to create “the link between the earth and the sky”. The headboard was carefully designed to match these lamps. “They match the gold reflexions and their mat aspect matches the earth coating”, says Berthou.

NICOLAS BERTHOU|B3R2DESIGN Nicolas Berthou early discovered his interest for decoration. Nevertheless, it took him a long time and several other jobs to realize he should follow his passion. “Thanks to an accident”, Berthou reveals, he finally listened to his small inner path and decided to make significant changes to his own life. From that day, his passion for decoration, art professions, and new technology finally became real and he decided to create B3R2 Design, a design studio in Paris. A man of convictions, Nicolas Berthou always limit the impact of his activity on the environment and the health of the occupants of the spaces on which he works. Looks at the way in which he can harmonize the house and favor the people who live there are his biggest concerns – that’s the reason he “naturally decided to turn to a millennial Chinese art: Feng Shui. Nowadays Nicolas Berthou is a Feng Shui bio decorator and shares his time between décor and furniture making

Designed by Turkish, multi-disciplinary design studio ESCAPEFORMA, the four-bedroom, 250-square meter apartment spreads out on two floors with living spaces and bedrooms on both levels and a spacious terrace on the upper floor offering amazing views of the city. Designed with a minimalist aesthetic of simple lines and clean surfaces, the rooms are complemented by the use of Italian marble, and polished brass for furniture pieces and other details that emanate a subtle luxuriousness without overwhelming the senses. The apartment’s decor is one of mid-century modernism, exemplified by custom made furniture of polished wood, marble and brass, together with classic pieces. Other elements that reminisce back to that era are the slatted timber paneling cladding the kitchen and staircase volumes and the custom-design wallpaper on the back of the sitting area depicting tropical foliage and flowers, both

The upper floor, which includes the master bedroom and a second sitting room-cum-playroom, retains the same minimalist, mid-century aesthetic, including a marble clad fireplace flanked by dark, wooden shelving, but has a more airy, playful ambiance due to undulating, faceted ceiling and the bountiful daylight flooding in through the perimeter glazing and skylights. The living room opens up onto a spacious L-shaped terrace accommodating a comfortable lounge and dining area. With an elegant palette of grays, whites and baby blues, it is the ideal place to sit and enjoy the panoramic views of the city and the Sea of Marmara beyond.

JACOBSEN, THE MASTER OF DANISH DESIGN

ARNE JACOBSEN (1902-71), ARCHITECT AND DESIGNER.
Educated at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, School of Architecture in Copenhagen, and professor at the Academy (1956-65). Just like a locomotive Arne Jacobsen pushed through the landscape of Danish design and architecture for more than half the past century. His traces are still present everywhere around us nowadays… more than 30 years after his death. How great? Arne was an unstoppable man. When he was not working, he worked nevertheless - only with something else. To him, relaxation was a shift to another project in the creative realm. And this was what empower a huge output with no compromises on quality. Jacobsen’s design was characterized by the core of the Danish design identity. His best designs passed on to ’The Hall of Famous Objects’, where the reasons and causes behind the design need not be questioned, and where the success story is a case of world-class branding; 20th-century icons and timeless, and classic elegance! With a small studio staff, Jacobsen mastered the range from large, complex building projects- like Danmarks Nationalbank. The distinct accuracy and striking likeness of his drawings with the end-result, especially of many of his watercolors of buildings, reflects his ability to bring ideas to life. Jacobsen originally wanted to be a painter, and this is especially evident in the level of ambition in his presentation drawings.

MAAT MUSEUM: LISBON’S NEW RIVERSIDE ARCHITECTURAL ICON
Designed by Amanda Levete Architects, MAAT Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology opened in Lisbon last October 5th to a flood of visitors – nearly 15 thousand. The new museum pushes the barriers of art, architecture, and light and aspires to be the city’s new “hotspot”.
44 TRENDZINE
/ ARCHITECTURE
/ ARCHITECTURE
Amanda Levete – the founder of “AL_A” and the project’s principal architect, – had already fallen in love for Lisbon over a decade ago – before the CEO of the Portuguese energy company EDP, Antonio Mexia, decided she was the right woman for the project. The museum is part of the EDP Foundation, the organization’s philanthropic, cultural arm, and the choice of architect was not subject to any competition. Amanda Levete has now her own building in the city she loves: a sparkling ceramic swooping crest on the banks of the Tagus River that opened to the public on October 5, honoring the national holiday that signals the establishment of the Portuguese Republic. The inside offers around 7000 square metres of new exhibition space and there will be art and design, a lot of videos and moving image, and a huge emphasis on education. The outside seems to play a more important role, though. “Urbanistically, the point was to connect this building to the city,” says Levete, who has also designed a footbridge that will eventually join the riverside to the neighborhood of Belem, which has been cut off from the Tagus by a big busy road for years. “And in design terms, it felt important to produce something organic. Everything else in this city is made of straight lines.”
46 TRENDZINE
/ ARCHITECTURE
“WE LIKE TO THINK OF MAAT AS MORE OF A PLACE THAN A BUILDING” According to Amanda Levete, visitors won’t be faced by a traditional grand entrance—or even much in the way of conventional roofs and walls. Instead, the structure swells out of—or flows down to—the ground. In fact, the contemporary design seems to naturally sprout out of the bank of the River Tagus, in Belém, “blending structure into landscape”. “We like to think of MAAT as more of a place than a building,” says Levete, referring to herself and her fellow AL_A directors, Ho-Yin Ng, Alice Dietsch and Maximiliano Arrocet. “It does have presence, but it’s not bombastic. It’s a place to meet, to congregate, to encounter new ideas.” The museum has been designed so people can walk, or sit, before, behind, between, above and below it, its steel structure sheathed in a skin of seamless tiles (a modern take on a Portuguese tradition) designed to make the most of that Portuguese sunlight. As you enter, you are confronted by the 1,200 main exhibition space, stretching our before and beneath you. The space can accommodate huge, immersive art pieces. It is elliptical in plan and a curved ramp wraps around it, conducting the visitor on a slow walk down from entrance to lower level. “It felt counter-intuitive to walk into the building and immediately go down”, says Levite, who added this was needed “to ensure the overall height remained low”. MAAT aims to dedicate 60 per cent of its space to work by Portuguese artists, but the first installation is by French artist Dominique Gonzalez-Foester.
/ ARCHITECTURE
12 HOUR-LONG INAUGURAL PROGRAM The launch featured a 12-hour-long inaugural program that included the presentation of the kunsthalle’s first sitespecific commission, Pynchon Park, a dystopian large-scale environment created by Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster, as well as the opening of The World of Charles and Ray Eames in MAAT’s Central Tejo building, which opened in June 2016, and the inauguration of The Form of Form, the main exhibition of the 4th Lisbon Architecture Triennale. In 2017, MAAT will also see the opening of a restaurant, shop, and a park designed by Lebanese studio Vladimir Djurovic Landscape Architecture.

OPA’s main goal is to design “breathtaking buildings and inspiring images”. And they surely did it with this other-worldly project. The Holly Cross Chapel was designed to be built on the greek island of Serifos, facing the Aegean sea. Always trying to stay true to tradition, this project’s design is supposed to reflect a study on aesthetics, structure, function and engineering, all the while featuring a very contemporary design. To achieve this style, the chapel is thought to be constructed with simple materials like wood, glass and concrete. All these elements go fairly well with the surrounding landscape, which has a very arid feel to it, matching perfectly to the rough finish of the concrete exterior design of the chapel. Only a single façade was designed, right in the middle of one of the island’s cliffs. According to OPA this was thought to position men face to face “with the beauty and magnanimity of creation”

On the inside there are also some details worth mentioning, like the Holy table and the auditorium. The latter encompasses several rows of concrete benches finished with warm wood, which shows the simplicity of the materials used and the design. Finally, OPA mentions that its aim with this breathtaking project is “to integrate and translate the traditional symbols of belief in contemporary architecture, setting a unique platform for the communication between tradition and innovation.”

WHAT’S NEW - NIKE MAG NIKE mag are responsive sneakers that can sense its wearer and self-adjust using an ‘adaptive fit’ technology. Probably most known for being worn in the famous movie “Back to the Future part II”, these otherworldly Nike trainers have been released as a limited edition. “Though it initially shared only a few seconds of screen time with Michael, the idea behind the NIKE mag unlocked something much bigger at NIKE”, said Mark Parker, CEO of NIKE. Parker also stated that “it also opened our eyes to our ability to fight some of the world’s biggest challenges. We feel privileged for the opportunity to raise even more awareness for the fight against Parkinson’s”. Almost 30 years after the movie has been released, having then become a cult film, NIKE in partnership with the Michael J. Fox foundation are releasing 89 pairs of these dreamy sneakers. All 100% of the proceeds will go to the Michael J. Fox foundation, thus accelerating the research and development of a cure for the Parkinson’s disease.
