ABOUT OUR SPEAKER: Clarissa Johnston, M.D., FACP Dr. Clarissa Johnston is an associate professor in the Departments of Internal Medicine and Medical Education at Dell Medical School at The University of Texas at Austin. She received her medical training and completed her residency in internal medicine at the University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine. She was also program director for the Internal Medicine Residency Program at Kaiser San Francisco prior to coming to Austin and Dell Med. Dr. Johnston is a core physician on the palliative care team at Dell Seton Medical Center, where she manages an interdisciplinary team that provides support and recommendations for critically ill and dying patients. She also leads the palliative care clerkship for Dell Medical School, teaches in the palliative care elective for internal medicine residents, and is a hospitalist attending for both medical students and residents. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Johnston flew to El Paso, Texas, to provide care to patients when the city was overwhelmed with COVID-19 cases. She also initiated a program called “Meet My Loved One” in which volunteer students collect information about patients from family and friends so that hospital providers can connect more deeply with their patients. Students find Dr. Johnston to be a compassionate teacher and role model who provides constructive feedback during their training to become the physician leaders and role models of the future. They have noted that she keeps social drivers of health and patient goals at the forefront of her work every day, cultivating a patient-centered care environment. As the recipient of the 2020 Dell Medical School Compassion and Character Award, Dr. Johnston is a true example of the values that are central to the Hippocratic oath.

DELL MEDICAL SCHOOL HIPPOCRATIC OATH I swear to fulfill, to the best of my ability and judgment, this pledge: I will respect the autonomy, dignity and privacy of my patients. I will practice my profession with conscience and in accordance with best medical practice. I will remember that there is art to medicine as well as science, and that warmth, sympathy and understanding may outweigh the benefits of surgery and medications. I will not permit bias, prejudice or other societal constraints to impact my responsibility to my patient, and I will be vigilant in addressing health inequities. I will avoid the traps of overtreatment and advocate for those without access. I will always put patients and their families ahead of personal economic gain. I will prevent disease and promote health. I will advance health in my community beyond the walls of the clinic and hospital. I will collaborate with all members of the health care team to provide comprehensive care to my patients and the community. I will recognize the limits of my knowledge and skill and seek the help of others when needed. I will work to improve the quality and safety of the health system through innovation, collaborative leadership and teamwork. I will attend to my own health, well-being and abilities in order to provide care of the highest standard. If I do not violate this oath, I will live honored knowing that I have returned to society the great investment and trust it has placed in me.
