At this world-class institution, you worked hard, and you prevailed. But commencement means beginning, and now the real change starts. At Texas, you learned to think big. Go change the world.

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Graduate, When we hear the word “commencement” this time of year, we often think of the end of a journey. And it is true that with graduation, today also marks the end of an academic process for you and for many, the conclusion of your formal academic education. And yet we call it commencement because it is also a form of beginning. The next stage of your life is full of possibilities. The degree you have earned is more than just an accolade or credential, it is also a calling to lead and to serve. Our university has long embraced its role in training future leaders who go on to serve society in countless ways. For your own contribution to this legacy, the skills, knowledge, creativity and curiosity you developed as a Longhorn will serve you well. Today we celebrate both your individual successes and our collective accomplishments. You have been part of artistic and creative works, technological breakthroughs, and acts of kindness and compassion that have helped others on and off campus. The Class of 2022 embraced its opportunities and faced its challenges – and our faculty, staff and alumni applaud you for your dedication and resilience. It is truly an honor to come together in this moment and recognize your extraordinary achievements. As you leave the Forty Acres and take your place as leaders and change agents, you do so with our full confidence. I am excited to see what you achieve, where your degree takes you, who you serve, and how you will change the world. Congratulations and Hook ’em!

Jay Hartzell, President The University of Texas at Austin

LETTER FROM THE DEAN Dell Med Graduates, Today, we celebrate the culmination of years of hard work — and your dedication to becoming the physician leaders our society needs. During the ceremony, take a moment to look around the room and soak up the joy, pride and love from family and friends. And know that your Dell Medical School family is beaming with pride alongside you, our newest colleagues. It is an understatement to say that medical school is challenging. You have been challenged intellectually, mentally and physically. Challenged to confront long-held beliefs, well-established systems and dated approaches. Challenged to understand the complexities of illness and how to deliver compassionate care, always. Challenged to chart the course for a new era of health that better serves people and communities. You have overcome every obstacle and triumphed magnificently to be here with us today. While your journey as an undergraduate is ending, in many ways, your journey in medicine is just beginning. Wherever you are headed next, I am confident you will fulfill our shared mission to revolutionize how people get and stay healthy. Congratulations, doctor.

HIPPOCRATIC OATH I swear to fulfill, to the best of my ability and judgment, this pledge: I will respect the autonomy, dignity and privacy of my patients. I will practice my profession with conscience and in accordance with best medical practice. I will remember that there is art to medicine as well as science, and that warmth, sympathy and understanding may outweigh the benefits of surgery and medications. I will not permit bias, prejudice or other societal constraints to impact my responsibility to my patient, and I will be vigilant in addressing health inequities. I will avoid the traps of overtreatment and advocate for those without access. I will always put patients and their families ahead of personal economic gain. I will prevent disease and promote health. I will advance health in my community beyond the walls of the clinic and hospital. I will collaborate with all members of the health care team to provide comprehensive care to my patients and the community. I will recognize the limits of my knowledge and skill and seek the help of others when needed. I will work to improve the quality and safety of the health system through innovation, collaborative leadership and teamwork. I will attend to my own health, well-being and abilities in order to provide care of the highest standard. If I do not violate this oath, I will live honored knowing that I have returned to society the great investment and trust it has placed in me.

Written in 1964 by Louis Lasagna (edited by the inaugural class of Dell Medical School)
