Modernism and Sydney Photography 1930 to 1950 EO Hoppé – Harold Cazneaux – Olive Cotton – Max Dupain – David Moore

Introduction The years between the Depression and Menzies were a defining period in Australian photography. In 1930, the celebrated German/British photographer, EO Hoppé, arrived in Australia to document the nation for his book, The Fifth Continent. He was invited by David Lloyd Jones to mount a major exhibition in Sydney, including modernist photographs of industrial subjects from his newly-released book, Deutsche Arbeit. Harold Cazneaux later published some of Hoppé’s Harbour Bridge studies in his Second Bridge Book.

This exhibition is a rare chance to see vintage prints of Sydney in 1930 by Hoppé and early modernist experiments by the young Olive Cotton and Max Dupain. Also featured are breakthrough and signature images by Dupain, Cotton, David Moore and Cazneaux, from the Corrigan Collection.

Forging a local modernist aesthetic inspired by international movements, the 1930s photographs by Cotton and Dupain exude sensuality, confidence and optimism. In the 1940s, the spectacle of the city and postwar realities are immortalised in Moore’s early forays into the street, foreshadowing his later, influential photojournalism.

An important part of this exhibition has been sourced from the Corrigan Collection. Australian photography of this era was one of the first collecting interests of Pat Corrigan, who has since contributed significantly to Australian contemporary art as a collector and philanthropist.
