Deloraine Skate Club presents “Game Day” by Judy Wells Members of the Deloraine Skate Club had fun dressing up for their Ice Revue - “Game Day” on Sunday, March 12. The arena was decorated inside with a great variety of “game day” things. A big shout out goes to the Ice Revue committee for their great ideas and efforts. Nicole Hooper was emcee and she welcomed everyone. Kelly Temple sang the national anthem beautifully to officially kick off the event. Presentations were made to coaches Sharlene McGregor and Hillary Bennie; Program assistants - Kenzie Edwards, Sydnie Corkish, Ashley

Temple, Tori Maxwell, Madison McGee, Haley Teetaert, Kelly Temple and Taylor Corkish. Missing were Hillary Kelm and Keiman Olson. Following the presentations, solo performances were skated by Kenzie Edwards, Hillary Bennie, Sydnie Corkish, Ashley Temple, Tori Maxwell, Therese Haberman, Emma Haberman, Madison McGee and Ella Clague. Nicole gave an overview of each skater prior to their performance. All skaters are coached by either Sharlene McGregor or by Hillary Bennie or both. She has worked hard and become a Primary STARSkate Trained coach this year, which is the first step to becoming a fully certified STARSkate coach. Hillary completed her Gold Skills, Gold Dance and Gold Interpretive; making her a triple gold level skater which is quite an accomplishment. Also, she has achieved her partial Junior Silver Free Skate test. Besides skating herself,

Hillary has coached skating in Deloraine, Waskada, Melita and Pierson this winter. Hillary is 17 years old and is the daughter of Tom and Tanis Bennie of Waskada. Heritage group hold AGM March 14 by Tyler Bugg Note: This is a follow-up to my co-worker Judy Wells’ article in last week’s Deloraine Times & Star. The Turtle Mountain Souris Plains continued their Annual General Meeting on March 14. The theme of the AGM was “The Times - They Are A’Changin’ ”. The Sharon Parenteau, meeting continued after Louis Riel Institute lunch with three further presentations. The first was Sharon Parenteau from the Louis Riel Institute. Her Power Point presentation was given on the history of the Métis people in Manitoba. Like the first nations, the Métis, who are descendants of European and First Nation fathers and mothers, were living in the area when Manitoba was accepted into Confederation in 1870. Land claims by the Métis are still on going with the Federal government as well, and until it has been resolved, “the Crown will not have completed its fiduciary responsibility”. When Canada was being established, Métis were also included in the definition of “Indians,” as per the Indian Act that regulated relations between the government and First Nations tribes. However, the Métis nation self-identifies themselves differently as a distinct group separate from either “Indian” or “European,” mostly as descendents of the Red River Settlement. This was finally recognized in the “Blais Decision” in 2003, when the Métis were not considered part of an Indian band, but as a distinct community. However, this is a recent development. In previous generations, many Métis refused to identify themselves as such, and parent’s wouldn’t teach their children of their heritage. However, in recent years, through genealogy cards, harvester cards, and an increasing identity of a “Métis Nation,” this is changing, and being Métis is now something to be proud of. Sharon mentioned that Métis who would be interested in researching their genealogy can look at the St. Boniface Historical Society.

There are still issues to overcome. Along with the Land Claim, there is also the fact that the Truth and Reconciliation Commission did not include Métis people, and until reconciliation happens, Aboriginal and Métis people of all stripes are still living marginalized lives. However, the Manitoba Métis Federation has done great work lobbying on behalf of the Métis people, servings as a representative democratic government. Tom Mitchell gave the next presentation. A retired professor from Brandon University, Tom currently works with MTS All-Stream on producing and making videos with heritage content. He talked about the process of making videos, including the people, information and resources that would be required. In some videos, he does the research, write scripts, acts as narrator, provides still photos for the video and hires collaborators to help fill in other parts of the video. As an example of a heritage video, he showed a recent production from MTS that he was narrator and researched information on based on the early years of Brandon. “We live in a digital age,” Tom said, and that people aren’t reading as much anymore, so we should try to reach out where we can. The tools are available to make videos like what he has done with MTS. He also gave some suggestions for video ideas that the TMSPHA could make, namely a history based on the Boundary Commission Trail. Events that can make use of photographs, stories that have been written or passed down, and the landscape are all important. The human voice can also make a huge impression, hence the narrators for his videos. Music is also important, and Mitchell suggested looking for local people to compose music for a video instead of try-

ing to get the rights to use certain music. David Neufeld gave a few words of thanks to the member municipalities of the TMSPHA, including the Municipality of Two Borders, the Town of Melita, the Municipality of Deloraine-Winchester, the Municipality of Brenda-Waskada, the David Neufeld, TMSPHA Board member Municipality of Grasslands, and the Municipality of Boissevain-Morton. While it’s not an investment that is easy to see, like a new arena or road, it does provide knowledge and pride in our local historical and geological landscape. Ken Storie, TMSPHA’s researcher and writer, gave the last presentation of the day, and he discussed “Connections”. He said that when you reach out, you can find hundreds of things about southwest Manitoba that we didn’t know about. We try to reach out to the readers of the Vantage Point books: teachers and students to teach what we have learned and other collaborators who have more stories that we may not know about. Old buildings, trails and rivers, ancestors and technology: they are all important and all have stories to be told. Storie mentioned that there are already 200 stories that could be used for Vantage Points 5, and suggested the theme for the next book be “Interrelationships”. There was also a spirited discussion on bias and the best sources that could be used to research. It was eventually determined that, no matter the source, be it oral or written, primary or secondary, it’s impossible to fully get rid of bias, so we need to recognize that it does exist so that we can decipher and analyze the evidence that we are presented. It’s also important to note that just because it was written down, it does not mean that it’s the full truth. An example provided by Leah LaPlante, who gave a presentation earlier in the day, is that Vantage Point 4 may have misidentified two men who discovered Sitting Eagle after he passed away as local Deloraine residents, when Leah said it was her two grandfathers. The conference ended with a sincere thanks to the presenters: Steve, Clark, Chief Viola, Leah, David, Sharon, Tom, and Ken. The AGM followed, with the election of the new executive and the adoption of the 2015 Financial Report.

submitted by Dawn Minne Two years ago, on March 20, 2014, Marlys Minne and Carson Spence received the news that no parent ever wants to hear - your child has cancer. Their 9 month old son Jase was diagnosed with Stage 4 Neuroblastoma cancer and was immediately a patient of Cancer Care. The cancer started as a tumor on the kidney and spread to the lymph nodes and bone marrow. It was determined that Jase was Intermediate Risk, and he started a treatment program which was a treatment session once every three weeks. After a stay in the hospital, Marlys and Jase became residents at Ronald McDonald House. They stayed there until May and were then able to return home. Jase had to return to Winnipeg to receive his treatments. A fundraiser was held in Waskada for the

family in June 2014. In September 2014 it was determined that the tumor had shrunk considerably and he would not need his last treatment. Since then Jase has returned to Winnipeg every three months for testing. The good news from the testing in February 2016 was that the remains of the tumor have remained the same

for the past year and a half. Jase will return for his MIBG scan and CT scan in six months. Today he is a healthy, happy, extremely busy 2 1/2 year old who likes to hitch up the tractors and go fishing. He is surviving cancer thanks to all the support that Cancer Care has received and the research that continues to be done.

Odds & Ends by Judy Wells Old Man Winter isn’t giving up very easy, is he? Maybe you didn’t want to rake your lawn yet anyway. Regardless of the weather, Deloraine Minor Ball held its registration night and all the ball players and coaches are eager to get outside and start practicing. • • • The Deloraine Ladies 2000 Club held a very successful Daffodil campaign, selling out this year - thanks to a generous community and some very dedicated Club members who worked long hours selling the bundles. A big shout out to everyone involved! • • • Spring Break is right around the corner. . .and I’m sure all the staff and students are ready for a break. Hope everyone has a safe and relaxing time. • • • Rylan Rommelaere got called up to Medicine Hat as the back up goaltender. The Tigers are currently tied with Edmonton and the winner will take on the Brandon Wheat Kings in the first round of playoffs. Congrats, Rylan. I’m sure it’s a great experience no matter what happens. • • • I must apologize to Justin Adams - I accidentally said his nickname was “Tiger” –well, that name does belong to an Adams goaltender but not to Justin. It’s Colin Adams’ nickname. Justin’s nickname is “Sparky”. Sorry about that Justin. • • • Great news about Jase Spence! He had an excellent check up in February and doesn’t have to go back for tests for six months! As his grandma Dawn says – “Jase is a happy, healthy, extremely busy 2 1/2 year old!” The community is delighted to hear this great news! Thank you for sharing! • • • I’ve had the pleasure of attending both the Deloraine and Waskada Ice Revues. These are fun events where you see a season of hard work paying off. The Canskate kids are always so cute - when they start the year most of the newest members can barely stand up on their skates. Their progress is possible by their coaches and program assistants who have endless patience! A big shout out to everyone involved. Great shows! • • • Deloraine Chamber is hosting a luncheon on Friday, April 15, at the Mountview Centre, featuring guest speaker Chuck Davidson, President of Manitoba Chamber. You are encouraged to attend and connect on the issues facing rural Chambers! Everyone is welcome. See ad for more information. • • • You will also see in this issue that Olson Agencies will no longer be a Sear’s catalogue outlet. • • • The final “Last Hurrah” at the Deloraine Curling Rink on the weekend was a huge success. Twenty-three rinks participated in the fun spiel. Curlers included all ages and skill levels. Although it was a lot of fun, nostalgia kicks in too and it’s very bittersweet to know that’s the last bonspiel for this rink. See next week’s issue for article and pictures! • • • Happy Easter everyone!
