Showcase features Sierra Noble in concert

By Judy Wells “I’ve been a student of traditional Metis music since the age of seven,” says Sierra Noble. She, along with fellow musicians Kris Ulrich and Paul Yee, performed in concert on February 24 as part of the 2015-16 Southwest Showcase Series. Noble, 25, has been in the entertainment business from a very early age. Being on the road as a teenager created a difficult dating scene. Any suitors would have to learn to keep up with her. This inspired her to write “Gotta Run Fast” — a song she wrote to her younger self. She dedicated this song to two young ladies in the audience — Charly Artz and Hallie Franklin. “I love being home in Manitoba,” said Noble. She lived in New York for three years and enjoyed the experience, but she also knew when it was time to leave — and that was the inspiration for her song “Breaking Up With New York.” Noble is from Winnipeg and like most Winnipeggers they miss it when they’re gone from the city. Also, a common trend for former Winnipeggers is they often leave but they almost always come back at some point. “I think this is true of all Manitobans. There’s no one in the world like Manitobans. When we go, we leave a ghost impression of ourselves that whispers to us to come home,” she said. “Rebel Song” was inspired by an experience with record labels. When in New York, Noble was on a record label for a short time and her manager had a vision and was great. Alas, he was fired and, so “Rebel Song” was her response to the cycle of record labels. Noble lives in Nashville and while there she loves to visit the huge Flea Market there. She was on the search for an old manual typewriter and to her delight there was a whole section of typewriters. This purchase inspired the song “Old Typewriter”. The song “Gypsy Soul” is kind of part two of “Gotta Run Fast”. It was fiddle time! Nobel said she loves to get back to the roots of Metis music — “just the fiddle and the feet.” Nobel said she started taking Métis music lessons from well-known Manitoba fiddler, Tommy Knott when she was seven years old. “I had that moment — when you just know

I feel so lucky to have had that moment when I was so young.” The audience enjoyed Nobel’s fiddle tunes — “Money Mask”, “The Lost Child” and they really came alive when she played the famous “Red River Jig”, which she dedicated in honour to Larry Coad. “He was the first one to tell me about the legend of the Red River Jig — or at least one of its theories. The song/ dance had its origins in the Red River Settlement. The story states that the Scottish lived on one side of the river (either the Seine, Red or Assiniboine Rivers), and the French Canadians and Métis lived on the other. The Scots played bagpipes on the one side of the river, while the people on the other side listened. Then one night a man decided to imitate the bagpipes with his fiddle and played a sad tune, but then started playing a rollicking beat that made everyone to dance (excerpt taken from www.virtualmuseum.ca) Nobel continued the concert with a song she wrote ten years ago — “Possibility”. This song was noticed by the television industry and was used in TV hits “One Tree Hill” and “Life Unexpected.” Noble concluded her concert with “Be Who You Be” from her latest album “City of Ghosts”. “I am very proud of this album which has taken so many years to make. “Manitoba, you have always been there for me. You are my heart and soul,” she concluded.
