Showcase features Sierra Noble in concert
Southwest Showcase presented Sierra Noble in concert Wednesday, February 24. She is pictured playing traditional Metis music on the fiddle. PHOTOS/JUDY WELLS
By Judy Wells “I’ve been a student of traditional Metis music since the age of seven,” says Sierra Noble. She, along with fellow musicians Kris Ulrich and Paul Yee, performed in concert on February 24 as part of the 2015-16 Southwest Showcase Series. Noble, 25, has been in the entertainment business from a very early age. Being on the road as a teenager created a difficult dating scene. Any suitors would have to learn to keep up with her. This inspired her to write “Gotta Run Fast” — a song she wrote to her younger self. She dedicated this song to two young ladies in the audience — Charly Artz and Hallie Franklin. “I love being home in Manitoba,” said Noble. She lived in New York for three years and enjoyed the experience, but she also knew when it was time to leave — and that was the inspiration for her song “Breaking Up With New York.” Noble is from Winnipeg and like most Winnipeggers they miss it when they’re gone from the city. Also, a common trend for former Winnipeggers is they often leave but they almost always come back at some point. “I think this is true of all Manitobans. There’s no one in the world like Manitobans. When we go, we leave a ghost impression of ourselves that whispers to us to come home,” she said. “Rebel Song” was inspired by an experience with record labels. When in New York, Noble was on a record label for a short time and her manager had a vision and was great. Alas, he was fired and, so “Rebel Song” was her response to the cycle of record labels. Noble lives in Nashville and while there she loves to visit the huge Flea Market there. She was on the search for an old manual typewriter and to her delight there was a whole section of typewriters. This purchase inspired the song “Old Typewriter”. The song “Gypsy Soul” is kind of part two of “Gotta Run Fast”. It was fiddle time! Nobel said she loves to get back to the roots of Metis music — “just the fiddle and the feet.” Nobel said she started taking Métis music lessons from well-known Manitoba fiddler, Tommy Knott when she was seven years old. “I had that moment — when you just know
Paul Yee (above) and Kris Ulrich (left) perform as back-up musicians for Sierra Noble. this was my music. I feel so lucky to have had that moment when I was so young.” The audience enjoyed Nobel’s fiddle tunes — “Money Mask”, “The Lost Child” and they really came alive when she played the famous “Red River Jig”, which she dedicated in honour to Larry Coad. “He was the first one to tell me about the legend of the Red River Jig — or at least one of its theories. The song/ dance had its origins in the Red River Settlement. The story states that the Scottish lived on one side of the river (either the Seine, Red or Assiniboine Rivers), and the French Canadians and Métis lived on the other. The Scots played bagpipes on the one side of the river, while the people on the other side listened. Then one night a man decided to imitate the bagpipes with his fiddle and played a sad tune, but then started playing a rollicking beat that made everyone to dance (excerpt taken from www.virtualmuseum.ca) Nobel continued the concert with a song she wrote ten years ago — “Possibility”. This song was noticed by the television industry and was used in TV hits “One Tree Hill” and “Life Unexpected.” Noble concluded her concert with “Be Who You Be” from her latest album “City of Ghosts”. “I am very proud of this album which has taken so many years to make. “Manitoba, you have always been there for me. You are my heart and soul,” she concluded.

Royals report by Doug Whiteside, manager Late goal sinks Royals in Game 2 Final Score: Killarney Shamrocks: 3 Deloraine Royals: 2 The Royals deserved a better fate on Wednesday, February 24 in Game 2 of the West Division Semi-Final. In a hard-fought battle, a deflected Killarney shot with under two minutes to play in the third period, clinched a Game 2 win for the Shamrocks in this best-of-five series. The Royals opened the scoring two minutes and 36 seconds into the opening period on a shot by Andrew Vercaigne assisted by Ty Moffat. The Shamrocks tied things up two minutes later, however Kelsey Sunaert put the Royals back in front at the end of the period with assists going to Ty Moffat and Mitch Olson. Deloraine had a number of excellent scoring opportunities early in the game but came up empty-handed. The Shamrocks tied the game up early in the second period and the score remained knotted at two until the final minutes of the third period. Royals’ goalie Cody Matthewson was spectacular in net, turning aside 42 shots, versus 26 saves by the Shamrocks goaltender. Deloraine now has their work cut out for them as they attempt
to extend the series when they return to Killarney for Game 3 Friday night, February 26. Games 4 and 5 will be played on the Saturday and Sunday if necessary. Scoring Summary: 1. Vercaigne - Moffat 2. K. Sunaert - Moffat - Olson • • • Season comes to an end for Royals Final Score: Killarney Shamrocks: 11 Deloraine Royals: 1 The 2015/16 THHL Season came to an abrupt end for the Royals on Friday night in Killarney as the host Shamrocks demonstrated why they finished atop the West Division during the regular season. The explosive Killarney offense tallied seven times in the opening period, which pretty much sealed the fate of the Royals for this year’s playoffs. Ryan Adams finally got the Royals on the board in the third period to avoid the shutout but, by that time, Killarney lead 9-0 and time was running out on the Royals’ season. The Shamrocks will now move on to face the Souris Elks who upset the Boissevain Border Kings three games to one in the other West Division Semi-final. The Royals would like to thank all the fans who supported them throughout the year. Scoring Summary: 1. Adams - Beernaert

Odds & Ends By Judy Wells Hey all you History and Heritage buffs out there — the Turtle MountainSouris Plains Heritage Association is holding its AGM and Local Heritage Conference on Monday, March 14 from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Mountview Centre. The conference will feature: • “The Times They are a-Changin” – The view from three Vantage Points: Dakota, Metis and EuroSettler. A traditional Metis lunch is available at noon. • Opportunities and Projects — Partnerships, Creating and using Videos, and Written Works. • Annual General Meeting. All are welcome for the conference and AGM. For more details and updates go to www.vantagepoints.ca • • • The Deloraine Border Festival 2016 program is up on-line! You can check out when you or your child is performing and start scheduling. Go to www.deloraineborderfestival.net for all things festival. It’s only six weeks away! • • • Deloraine School has a Healthy Snack program on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Mrs. Donna McGregor applied for a grant from Child Nutrition Council of Manitoba to cover the cost of a nutritional snack of vegetables or fruit. Did you know that only about 1/3 of Canadian children eat the recommended five or more servings of veg-
etables and fruit each day? The Child Nutrition Council of Manitoba is a charitable organization dedicated to helping school children learn, grow, and succeed by supporting snack and lunch programs. It’s unique because it’s based in Manitoba – and all of the funds stay in this province, reaching children in all regions of Manitoba. Starting Tuesday, March 1, the K-6 students had the option of a morning snack of a piece of fruit or vegetable. This will be in addition to what they bring from home. The plan is to have this snack available on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. There will always be a bin of extras in the office for any student, K-12, who needs a snack. Thanks to the Child Nutrition Council of Manitoba for the grant money as well as thanks to the Deloraine Coop for supplying the fruits and vegetables at sale price. Later on there will be a smoothie day using any frozen leftovers. The school will be looking for parent volunteers to help with the program. • • • The winter sports are winding down. Many of the hockey teams are done with their league playoffs and some are attending provincial tournaments. Things are starting to wrap up at the Curling Rink as well. The very last “Last Hurrah” will take place March 18-20. It will be a fun time – every rink gets three six-end games. There are plenty of extras at this year’s event to mark the final bonspiel to be played in the current curling rink. If you’re not curling, head to the rink anyway for fun, fellowship and reminiscing.
