Prezados Amigos, É com prazer que apresentamos mais uma edição da nossa revista A Bordo, desta vez em edição especial sobre os nossos novos destinos: Aruba e Curaçao. Esta edição é comemorativa para nós da TAF, tendo em vista que este projeto vem sendo buscado desde a nossa primeira prospecção, quando estivemos no Caribe, há três anos. Hoje a tornamos realidade. E melhor! Uma realidade acessível agora a todos os brasileiros, inclusive os nordestinos e nortistas, até então não servidos com uma rota direta de conexão aérea destas regiões para o Caribe. A TAF tem uma experiência vitoriosa na abertura de novos mercados. Iniciamos com uma rota para Caiena, na Guiana Francesa, de forma regular, de uma maneira bastante parecida com a que estamos imbuídos hoje indo para as Antilhas Holandesas. Fomos desbravadores deste mercado mostrando que, com seriedade, competência e muita dedicação, este sonho poderia se tornar realidade, como de fato ocorreu. E não será diferente com Aruba e Curaçao. Estes dois paraísos insulares, localizados próximos à Venezuela, são destinos privilegiadíssimos. Não só pela beleza natural de suas praias e a atmosfera própria de lazer, como também por sua população, formada por uma gente hospitaleira e que tem vocação para servir. Os diversos cassinos e a culinária local são outros atrativos que complementam com charme a diversão dos que visitam estas ilhas. Curaçao é uma ilha aconchegante e romântica. Considerada hoje um dos mais belos destinos turísticos do Caribe, a cidade possui uma inconfundível arquitetura nas suas construções que muito se assemelham a Amsterdã, na Holanda. Já Aruba é um destino apropriado para compras e esportes náuticos em geral. Com lojas de grifes famosas e bons restaurantes, Aruba destaca-se pelo clima mais ativo e por uma diversidade de programações que podem ser feitas na ilha onde passar uma semana é pouco! Ambas as ilhas possuem bons cassinos e uma grande variedade de opções de lazer e turismo. Por isso mesmo decidimos fazer uma edição da nossa revista de bordo totalmente dedicada a este tema. Esperamos vê-los em breve em um dos nossos vôos. Nós, junto com a Insel Air, nossa parceira nesta operação, iremos proporcionar-lhes um mundo de prazer e diversão jamais visto. Embarque nesta! Dear friends, It is a great pleasure to bring to you one more issue of our A Bordo Magazine. This issue is a special edition on our new destinations: Aruba and Curacao. This issue is a celebration for us at TAF, for this project has been sought after for about three years now, since our first survey when we were to the Caribbean. Today, we made it come true. And better, a reality that is affordable to all Brazilians, especially for both northerners and northeasterners, who, so far, have not been provided with a direct air route from these regions to the Caribbean. TAF has a successful experience in opening new markets. We started with the Cayenne, French Guiana, route with regular flights, very similarly to the way we are involved with by flying to the Dutch Antilles. We have been pathfinders in this market, demonstrating that through integrity, competence and great dedication this dream could come true, as it actually did. And it will not be different regarding Aruba and Curacao. These two insular paradises near Venezuela are very privileged destinations. Not only for the natural beauty of their beaches and the suitable leisure environment, but also for their population, made up of hospitable people, who have a vocation to serve. The various casinos and the local cuisine are other attractions that complement with charm the amusement of those touring these islands. Curacao is a cozy and romantic city. Today, it is regarded as one of the most beautiful tourist destinations in the Caribbean. The city has an unmistakable architecture resembling Amsterdam, in the Netherlands. As for Aruba, it is the appropriate destination for shopping and nautical sports. Having famous designer shops and good restaurants, Aruba stands out for its more active atmosphere and for its programming diversity, for which a week is not enough! Both islands have good casinos and a great variety of leisure and tourism options. For this reason, we decided to publish an issue of our on-board magazine entirely dedicated to this matter. We do hope to see you soon onboard one of our flights. TAF and Insel Air, our partner in this operation, shall provide you with a world of entertainment never seen before. Come aboard! ARUBA Bon Bini! Bem-vindo, ou Bon bini! É com essa saudação que Aruba recebe os seus turistas. A expressão dá nome ao festival folclórico, que acontece todas as terças-feiras das 18h30 às 20h30, e reúne uma pequena mostra da cultura local, uma espécie de festa de boas vindas mesmo. Nela, são expostas mostras de artesanato, comidas típicas e apresentações de música e danças da ilha. Bon-bini! Welcome, or as one may in the local language: Bon-bini! It is with this greeting that Aruba receives its tourists. The expression gives name to the folklore festival that is held every Tuesday from 6:30p.m. to 8:30p.m., and congregates a small sample of the local culture, a kind of welcoming party actually.

History told through coins An accidental discovery in a garden of coins dating back to the first centuries of colonization of Aruba. This was how the collection of pieces that would originate the Numismatic Museum, owned by Mr. Mario Odor, started. Today, with more than 40,000 pieces from more than 400 countries, it has in its collection of coins, medals and tokens that date back to the early years of the island. Con ta bai? PAPIAMENTO,

THE LANGUAGE SPOKEN BY THE MAJORITY OF LOCALS, IS THE PERFECT PORTRAIT OF THE CULTURAL DIVERSITY AND THE MISCEGENATION OF THE PEOPLES THAT MADE UP ARUBA E CURACAO. The colonization process and the invasions of pirates as well as the incorporation of indigenous and African languages made of Aruba and Curacao a cultural miscellaneous with its highest expression at the native language of the islands, Papiamento. This name derives from the Spanish expression “papear” (to chat) and retains elements from several languages such as Portuguese, which is inheritance from the Tejo merchants. In the beginning, it was the language of the Caiquetios tribes, the natives who inhabited these islands in the pre-colonization phase. Then, as from the 16th century, the Spanish arrived and

literally spoke louder. A little later, in 1630, the inhabitants of Aruba and Curacao started hearing the Duth language more frequently, since Holland took control of the region until it took definitive possession of the place in 1815. So, the coming of

No mais, a vinda de escravos, mercadores europeus e piratas de diversas nacionalidades ajudou a dar forma ao Papiamento. Para os não poliglotas, ou aqueles que têm apenas o inglês como segundo idioma, a descoberta do Papiamento e suas muitas raízes pode até causar um certo estranhamento. Mas creiam, as dificuldades são apenas iniciais. De cara você será saudado com um cordial “Bon Bini” (bem-vindo), e dependendo do horário do desembarque, a saudação será seguida de um

Em Aruba o Papiamento e o Holandês são as duas línguas oficiais, mas todas as crianças estudam os idiomas Inglês e Espanhol a partir dos 10 anos de idade - e muitos nativos falam muito bem as duas línguas. Em Curaçao, o Holandês é a língua oficial, mas também se pode ouvir o Inglês, Espanhol e o bom e velho Papiamento. Quem quiser ir além do “portunhol”, é de bom tom não se deixar levar pela aparente facilidade da língua. Não é possível dominar o idioma em poucas semanas, mas compreender algumas frases está ao alcance de todos. Confira:

Entre tantas ilhas paradisíacas, vamos desembarcar em duas localizadas ao norte da Venezuela. Aruba e Curaçao têm áreas pequenas – 181 e 472 Km², respectivamente –, mas quem disse que tamanho é documento? O que faz destas ilhas roteiro certo em pacotes turísticos são as atrações que a natureza se encarregou de fazer, e o homem de aproveitar. Nem precisa esforço. Basta olhar no horizonte, sentir o vento bater no rosto e banhar-se nas águas claras caribenhas. Quer mais? Ainda há cassinos, prédios históricos, esportes, comidas... Ao chegar às ilhas, você ouvirá de alguém: Bon bini! – que em português quer dizer “bem-vindo”. Agradeça a recepção e diga: Masha danki! – “muito obrigado”. Se esta situação ocorrer, saiba que foi seu primeiro diálogo em papiamento, língua com influências principais do português, espanhol e inglês que é muito comum no dia-a-dia das duas ilhas. Além de falar papiamento, os habitantes se comunicam em inglês, holandês e espanhol.

Diversidade na língua e na formação do povo caribenho. Os primeiros a desfrutar do paraíso em Aruba e Curaçao foram os índios. Até que, no século XV, o navegador espanhol Alonso Ojeda chegou às ilhas. Como a Espanha não mostrou tanto interesse pela área conquistada, os holandeses tomaram Curaçao e Aruba no século XVII. Depois, ingleses e americanos passaram por lá. Muitos venezuelanos também migraram para as ilhas. Houve ainda a presença africana e judaica na ocupação do espaço. Com tantas influências, Aruba e Curaçao aparecem com boas surpresas e muita variedade cultural. A história das ilhas pode ser desvendada nos corredores de museus como o Forte Zoutman, em Aruba, ou em construções que deixam à mostra a beleza da arquitetura local, como os prédios coloridos de traços holandeses em Curaçao. Se a sua praia é realmente admirar a natureza, procure as paisagens no interior das ilhas. Nas Cavernas de Hato, em Curaçao, há incrustações de quartzo e coral. Era lá que os escravos se escondiam dos colonizadores. Aruba é região semi-árida e pode ser explorada também nas áreas desérticas, onde cactos e outros representantes da vegetação de luga-

It is around tem shipwrecks (including airplanes), among them is the famous Antillla, locally known as a ‘ghost ship’. This German cargo ship is almost 122 meters long and was intentionally sunk by her captain in 1945 in order to prevent her from ending under the control of the Dutch when Germany invaded Holland during World War II.

The Pedernales and the California are two other shipwrecked ships that are interesting for both experienced and amateur divers to the Aruban seas. Snorkel diving is also a must and is provided by several agencies (De Palm Tours, Red Sail, Jolly Pirates). A 3- or 4-hour ‘expedition’ costs about US$ 50 and includes similar services (stops for diving, open bar, snacks and equipment). The beaches of white sands and calm waters and the luxury hotels place Aruba and Curacao in the list of preferred destinations for engaged couples. The paradisiacal scenery of the islands has attracted a large number of Brazilians who decide to replace the traditional churches by ceremonies by the sea through packages that include accommodation for the guests, meals and all the arrangements for the party such as buffet, music, a priest and a judge. Getting married with no need to travel on a honeymoon – this has been one of the main arguments used by the entrepreneurs in the tourism sector and by the government of Curacao to attract sweethearts to the place. O que deveria ter sido a transposição da plantação de dulcíssimas laranjas da província espanhola Valência para Curaçao, acabou não dando certo. O terreno árido produziu frutos muito ácidos e de casca enrugada. As laranjas eram impróprias para comer, mas suas cascas, deixadas ao sol, produziam um óleo aromático muito agradável. Não se sabe quem o descobriu, mas o fato é que se passou a usar o

óleo para a produção de licor. A destilaria Senior & Co. foi a primeira a produzir a bebida em escala comercial, ainda no século XIX, e é a única no mundo que tem a inscrição “autêntico” no rótulo dos licores da marca “Curaçao de Curaçao”. Isso porque depois do sucesso conquistado mundo afora é que muita gente decidiu fabricá-lo. A produção na destilaria até hoje é feita no mesmo casarão do século XIX da família, o que faz do local parada indispensável nos roteiros turísticos da ilha.

Casualty This beverage is the result of an unsuccessful agricultural experiment, right after the arrival of the Spanish in 1499.

What should have been the transposition of very sweet orange crops from the Spanish Province of Valência to Curacao, ended up as a failure. The arid terrain yielded very acid fruit and wrinkled peal. The oranges were not suitable for eating, but their peals, when left in the sun, produced a very pleasant sweet-smelling oil. No one knows who discovered it, but the fact is that the oil started being used in liquor production. The Senior & Co. distillery was the first to produce this beverage commercially in the 19th century and is the only one in the world that carries the term ”authentic” on the labels of the “Curacao from Curacao” brand. This is due to the fact that, after the success of this beverage all over the world, many people decided to manufacture it. The production at the distillery is, until today, still made in the at the same 19th century big house belonging to the family, and this makes the place an indispensable stop in the island’s tourist itineraries.

For these tourists looking for a more relaxed programming and who just want to listen to some jazz or live music, the best options are the Plaza Café and the Chaos or Scandals, both featuring the Caribbean talent. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, the Dutch Café Paddock serves its best “take two for the price of one” in its happy hour, from 10 to 11 p.m. For those who prefer more frenzied places, the places to go are the U Wanna Beer and the Balloon Pub.
