PURPOSE of Deep Day

The Delaware Executive Exchange Program (DEEP) Day, sponsored by the College of Business at Delaware State University, is designed to develop students’ soft skills to help them become qualified business professionals.

In the College of Business, our top priority is to ensure that students get a quality education and are empowered with academic and professional competencies to succeed in today’s global workplace. Each student has an Individual Development Plan (IDP) built on the Business Education Student Transformation (BEST) model. The BEST model creates a road map for student success that includes: soft skills, mentoring, conferences, field trips, business case competitions, internships and job placement.

To this end, the DEEP Day agenda supports BEST by allowing students to gain relevant knowledge on such topics as: driving innovation, collaboration and teamwork, personal branding, and the art of the interview. DEEP Day helps lead students down a cocurricular pathway which prepares them to transition from the Delaware State University classroom to the executive boardroom. College of Business students are given an opportunity to build on their academic foundation and expand their experiences with a focus on career readiness. DEEP Day is a premier event that assists students on their journey toward becoming successful business executives with a global perspective.

The WHO proposition that there can be “no health without mental health” has also been endorsed by the Pan American Health Organization, the EU Council of Ministers, the World Federation of Mental Health, and the UK Royal College of Psychiatrists. Over the past decade, awareness of mental health issues in the workplace has grown significantly. Many organizations have started recognizing that mental health is just as important as physical health for employees’ overall well-being and performance.

Mental health issues at the workplace are becoming increasingly prevalent, with global research highlighting their significant impact on both employees and organizations. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), depression and anxiety cost the global economy an estimated $1 trillion annually in lost productivity. In the United States alone, a study by the American Psychological Association (APA) found that 79% of employees experienced work‐related stress, with 60% reporting that mental health concerns affect their job performance. Additionally, a Gallup poll revealed that burnout is responsible for 23% of unplanned absences, and employees who feel burned out are 2.6 times more likely to actively seek a new job.

Despite these figures, many organizations are still under‐equipped to address mental health in the workplace. Stigma remains a significant barrier, with 67% of workers stating they feel uncomfortable discussing mental health issues at work, according to a Mind Share Partners study.

Your team has been appointed by a large banking organization to consult on employees’ mental health concerns and implement strategies that will be fruitful in the next 5‐10 years. Recently, the company has noticed an increase in absenteeism and decreased productivity among several employees, some of whom have expressed feeling overwhelmed, stressed, or burned out. An employee satisfaction survey also revealed that 40% of the workforce reported experiencing symptoms of anxiety or depression in the past year.

The company has a health insurance plan that covers mental health services but lacks any specific mental health support programs or policies. The CEO is concerned about the long‐term impact on employee morale, productivity, and retention but is unsure of the best approach to take. They have asked you to develop a strategy to address mental health issues in the workplace.

>> Case Question

 Identify key challenges related to mental health at the workplace and high stress industries like banking. What are the consequences of not addressing these issues for both employees and the organization?

 Develop a comprehensive mental health strategy for the organization that is both effective and sustainable. Your strategy should include policies for support, resources and programs, strategies to reduce stigma, and role of leadership.

 Develop an implementation plan for the strategy considering key stakeholders — employees, managers, human resources, and leadership. Discuss obstacles and resistance from any stakeholder.

 Your strategy should include methods to measure the effectiveness of the organization’s initiatives. How would you determine the impact of the strategy on both employees’ well‐being and organizational performance?

We know that Delmarva Power is a great place to work, and we’re proud to partner with DSU to invest in the leaders of tomorrow and our future workforce. Through our robust “Power Scholars” scholarship program, five rising sophomores were awarded full scholarships and have the opportunity to work closely with Delmarva Power leaders through mentorship and job immersion experiences. This summer, we also welcomed ten DSU summer interns to the organization. Through hands-on professional development training, mock interviews, and networking events our Power Scholars and summer interns have the tools and resources needed to prepare them for a potential career in the energy industry.

For the past 30 years, our annual Delmarva Power Golf Scholarship Classic has also provided more than $100,000 per year over the past three years to DSU and other local universities and community colleges. As we expand career and education opportunities in the communities we proudly call home, we take a step closer to a more equitable energy workforce – one that is reflective of the diverse communities we serve.

Our Power Scholars proudly don the Delmarva Power logo on gear and apparel throughout the semester, but have you seen us around your campus?

We opened the Renewable Energy Education Center (REEC) on DSU’s campus in 2017 to advance Delaware’s goal of getting 25-percent of its electricity from renewable sources by 2025. The REEC was also instrumental in Delmarva Power and DSU launching a new American Association of Blacks in Energy (AABE) chapter in 2018, serving as a space to facilitate chapter meetings.
