Ke’Ajah Holman - Sophomore, Marketing Major with Accounting Interest | East Orange, New Jersey

Ke’Ajah Holman is a rising sophomore and firstgeneration college student at DSU who is majoring in Marketing with a great amount of interest in accounting and fashion. Her story for supporting others began at an early age when she found a passion for reading and spending time with her younger sisters. Ke’Ajah found that she excelled at reading and comprehension, which led to her skipping a grade. Essentially, she moved from Pre-Kto1stgradewiththeencouragementofhermother and father who have served as Ke’Ajah’s best friends and biggest fans over the years. In addition to her parents, Ke’Ajah credits her younger siblings as motivating factors to her drive and success as a student. Being the oldest, Ke’Ajah prides herself in leading as a positive example for her sisters and hopes to inspire them to follow her steps in attending college and being successful in their own studies when the time comes. Being the first person in her family to attend college has meant a lot to Ke’Ajah and this has played a huge role in her overall success and desiretosupportothers.

While many first-generation college students may feel overwhelmed in the process of choosing the best school for them, Ke’Ajah found that she had a much different experience. After visiting DSU and becoming acquainted with the university’s outstanding business program, as well as the family orientated atmosphere, she knew DSU was the school for her. In addition to this, Ke’Ajah received recognition for her academic excellence throughout high school and was grantedafull-rideacademicscholarship.

Ke’Ajah serves her peers in the campus community as a Student Success Assistant (SSA) for the Student Transition department in the Office of Student Success. In this role, she spends her time supporting and encouraging first-year students in their transition to DSU. As an SSA, Ke’Ajah is assigned to a University Seminar course and outside of attending the class, she works in partnership with the instructor to increase communication and understanding of assignments, hosts mentorship meetings, and informs students of the various resources that are offered to them by the university. Ke’Ajah appreciates her role as an SSA because she enjoys having the opportunity to support her peers but also recognizes the impact that the Office of Student SuccesshadduringhertransitiontoDSU.OutsideofherroleasanSSA,Ke’Ajahalsotakespartin otherorganizationssuchasthePicturesquePublicationsBookClubandWomen’sSenateevents.

When asked if she had any words of encouragement to her fellow Hornets, Ke’Ajah stated “I would encourage my fellow Hornets to never give up. Never limit yourself, based upon fear or struggles that you are facing. College students all face the same struggles whether it be homesickness or feeling out of place. But Delaware State provides a sense of community and therewillalwaysbesomeoneherejustlikeyouwhocanhelp.Youarehereforareason, andmost importantly, youbelonghere, too!”

Dr. Shonda L. Poe - Executive Director | Office of Undergraduate Research, Experiential Learning and Honors (URELAH)

Dr. Poe is a native of East Orange, New Jersey, and an alumnus of East Orange High School. She first found her way to the DSU campus after completing her A.S. in Business Administration at a Junior college. Dr. Poe’s godmother suggested applying to her own alma mater, DSU, to pursue a bachelor's degree in Business Administration. She transferred to DSU (known as Delaware State College at the time) in the Fall 1990 semester as a Junior. She resided in the former Laws Hall and found that her experience as an on-campus student was a better transition than expected. She shared that she had met the most amazing instructors and spent part of her time on campus working in the William C. Jason Library as a student worker. This led to her decision to establish Delaware as her new home. Dr. Poe graduated with a B.S. in Business Administration in December 1992 and participated in the May 1993 commencement as part of the last class of Delaware State College. She was then hired at Aetna Healthcare in Dover in May 1993 and has remainedinDelawareforthepast31years.In

those years, Dr. Poe went on to earn additional academic degrees which include a Master of Public Administration from Wilmington University and an Ed.D. in Educational Leadership from DelawareStateUniversity.

Before serving in her current role as the Executive Director of the Office of URELAH, Dr. Poe developed a background supporting the Delaware community in family and corporate law. However, when she heard there was an opportunity to return to her alma mater, she was happy to jump on the opportunity. In her current role, Dr. Poe serves the DSU communityinsupporting...

...and enhancing the experience of students who are involved in the Undergraduate Research, ExperientialLearning, andHonorsprogram(URELAH).

Dr. Poe would describe her leadership style as a combination of servant and authentic leadership. The reason is that as a believer and ambassador for Jesus Christ, it is her life commitment to serve authentically in her roles at church and work. She does not ask team members to work on tasks that she has not completed on her own. Fairness, integrity, trust, and honesty are important elements when it comes to describing Dr. Poe’s style of leadership. In addition to this, she is always open to different points of view for solutions that allow for more accuracy and accountability in resolving daily matters. Dr. Poe acknowledges that work in Higher Education comes with many long-term goals. She has learned to work effectivelyonmultipletaskstoavoidimportant

issuesinthoselong-termgoalsfrombeingoverlookedorunaddressed.

When asked if she had any advice for the DSU Community, Dr. Poe stated, “To our DSU students, as you pursue your academic journey at the Hornet Nation, be open and respectful to learning from amazing instructors in your field of study. Keep your eyes set on grabbing experiential learning opportunities such as research, internships, presentations at Research Day and offcampus conferences. I encourage all students to keep track of their academic assignments, attend and log in to their classes, ask for help if needed from resources such as your instructors, tutoring, meet with your academic advisors, and supporting programs.” In addition to this, Dr. Poe would share that the families of our DSU students may “connect with Parent University for assistance as your student navigates through their academic journey. Sign up for DSU communication platforms such as the DSU HUB app, Facebook, and related social media to stay informed. Take the professional approach of working with campus administration, instructors, and academic advisors regarding your student. Grab the opportunity to pursue a degree for personal enrichment. Attend campus events with your students such as Homecoming, parents' weekend, orathleticgamestogainabetterunderstandingofyourstudents’surroundings.”

‘INTO LIGHT’ EXHIBIT HOSTED DOWNTOWN BY PARKER LIBRARY, ACG, & WCHBS

This fall, the Parker Library on our Downtown campus hosted the Into Light Project in partnership with DSU’s Arts Center/Gallery (ACG) and Amy Gootee, Public Health Program Coordinator, with DSU’s Public & AlliedHealthSciencesdepartment.

In mid-October, Jennifer Gunther, ACG Director, and her student interns set up the display of portraits and narratives sharing the lives of Delawareans who struggled with drug addiction.

The Into Light Project is a national nonprofit that organizes exhibits featuring the stories of people local to each exhibit. Into Light Project commissions the portraits, sometimes including those by their founder, Theresa Clower, whoturnedtoartafterlosingherson to drug addiction. The portraits are created after conversation with the subject’s family who share photographs of the loved one and the way they might have wished to be remembered.

The exhibit opened on October 17 with a reception welcoming speakers from DSU and community partners who recognized the commitment of both the families and the artists to sharing these stories. The exhibit remainsopenthroughthefallsemester.
