Summer Activities and Updates
The summertime sizzle brought about many occasions. From travels to new locations, program changes, room updates, and visiting vacation spots while others still pursue their academic goals. We wanted to highlight and showcase a few of those summer activities
Partnering HBCU institutions hosted by DSU for the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) Internship
Dr. Hakeem Lawal and Dr. Erin Perchiniak, Associate Professor and Co-Director of the REU Program, ran the first cohort of the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) internship this summer. They hosted 10 students 4 from DSU and 6 from partnering HBCU institutions (Bethune-Cookman, Spelman, Tuskegee, Cheyney, and Lincoln). Thank-you notes have been sent to the other programs, expressing excitement about having their students join the internship.
Mikayla Taylor, Yeda Couto-Erickson, Oluwafunmilola Allen-Taylor, and Lindsay Fomundam were standouts They worked diligently in the labs for 10 weeks, participated in weekly professional development activities, and took on leadership roles within the program Since the other 6 students were not from DSU, these DSU students helped show them around and made them feel welcome They hosted game nights, provided rides to local stores, and consistently went above and beyond for the program Their efforts are greatly appreciated, and it's worth highlighting their contributions to their department and college leaders Hopefully, they were able to learn new skills and expand their networking circles as a result of their hard work this summer.
Learning From The Leaders
Previously titled the “Director’s Corner,” we wanted to expand on our pool of knowledge and invite other leaders to bestow their knowledge upon our parents and students
The Learning From The Leaders section recognizes DSU Directors, Staff, and Faculty in leadership, their experiences, and their contributions to the University Read all about their commitment to student success and how they share their talents with others here at DSU
Dr. Laxmi Pathak - Assistant Director, Writing Studio | Integrated Academic Support Services
In this edition of Learning From The Leaders, the Office of Student Success is pleased to highlight Dr. Laxmi Pathak. Dr. Pathak joined DSU in December of 2023 when he assumed the role of the Writing Studio Assistant Director. He describes himself as an educator with a genuine passion for researching, reading, and writing. Dr. Pathak has earned two bachelor’s degrees (B.A, B.Ed.) and three master’s degrees (M.A, M.Ed., M.Phil.) from Tribhuvan and Pokhara Universities, Nepal, in addition to a Ph D in Education at Lakehead University in Canada In his role as the Writing Studio Assistant Director, Dr Pathak oversees all initiatives of the Writing Studio, develops writing programs, plans and hosts writing workshops, and develops writing resources for all DSU students
Dr Pathak was born, brought up, and educated in the countryside of Nepal – a country in South Asia with the stunning beauty of nature He loves to spend time with family, have tea or coffee, talk with like-minded friends, walk through the beauty of nature and listen to the sound of wind and birds, play, and dive into the depths of sentimental music He also enjoys reading books on leadership and philosophy
Dr Pathak spent over a decade in Canada at Lakehead University working as a writing consultant for graduate students, teaching AEP/ESL to international students, and developing various courses before finding his way to Delaware When asked what brought him to DSU, he shared that his longing to work with and contribute to HBCU students was one of the primary reasons The other reason is the warm weather of Dover Dr Pathak we Canada, he experienced extremely cold weather (-40 in Northern Ontario.
When asked about his style of leadership, Dr Pathak stated that he firmly believes and practices the principle of ‘working with’ (not under and over) his co-workers He loves to collaborate, support, share, care, and learn from one another He also adds that what leadership theories suggest is to model simplicity and humility in both actions and words Respect for ‘self and others’ is what Dr Pathak loves to practice the most
Dr. Pathak expressed that if we could share something with students and parents of the DSU community, he would say, “We all are unique human beings and have inherent qualities with profound possibilities. We all have the potential to thrive and achieve what we want. So, it is crucial to look inside, know who we are, and pursue what we love the most in life. Life is simple but our thoughts complicate it. All students have immense possibilities; you all have nothing to lose but only to win! Please visit the Writing Studio where we can have more in-depth interactions with a focus on writing.”

Julia Kneba - Junior, Fashion Design and Fashion Merchandising
[Textiles & Apparel Studies] | Koscierzyna, Poland
This fall we are happy to recognize Julia Kneba as our Hornet Highlight recipient. Julia is a junior-year student majoring in Textiles and Apparel Studies with a focus on Fashion Design and Fashion Merchandising. She joined DSU as an international student from Germany but grew up and spent the majority of her life in Poland
From a young age, she played sports such as soccer and basketball But at the age of 14, Julia decided to fully pursue volleyball and aim for the professional level Because she was dedicated and focused so much on volleyball, she had a chance to play at a high level in both Poland and Germany In addition to professional and
collegiate volleyball, she has also been competing in beach volleyball during the summer offseason for the past three years.
While volleyball has taken up much of her time, Julia’s second interest is fashion. From a young age, art has been a large part of her life. First, she was interested in interior design after graduating from high school but knew she wanted to pursue a degree related to design. B combining her love for competitive volleyball and passio for fashion, Julia found a home at Delaware State University.
Julia has found much support and encouragement at the University from faculty and that led her to begin designing and creating clothes in her first year. This September, Julia was happy to share that she will be traveling to present at her fourth fashion show at the Armory Arena in New York. Outside of her studies, Julia returns the support given to her by DSU while working as a Supplemental Instruction Leader for Intro to Chemistry with Integrated Academic Support Services and serving as the elected captain for the DSU Women’s Volleyball team She hopes that in these leadership roles, she can encourage all students to “fight for their highest goals ”
When asked what words of encouragement she had for our incoming freshman class, Julia shared, “You can go far alone, but you can go even further with the help and support of those around you By surrounding yourself with those that uplift you, push you forward, and strengthen you; you are capable of more than what your brain can even comprehend ”

2024 NACDA & Affiliates Convention Summary and Highlights
From June 9 – June 12, the athletic advising team had the opportunity to attend the 2024 NACDA and Affiliates Convention, where they were able to participate in workshops, learn from, and share best practices with peers within the N4A (The National Association of Academic and Student-Athlete Development Professionals) group
During the conference, the team had incredible opportunities to hear from experts in the field and meet with industry service providers to bring the most current ideas back to DSU. A major highlight of the trip was fellowship with colleagues during the HBCU breakfast, where they discussed shared experiences and ideas with peer institutions. Each team member followed a specific development track, which included an Advising track, a Learning Specialist track, a Student-Athlete Development track, and a Diversity track. These specific learning tracks allowed the team not only to gain new individual insights but also to share these learnings and bring numerous ideas back to implement within their unit. Two major takeaways they
Success’ Academic Support
hope to implement immediately are utilizing the GamePlan e-learning platform to provide a yearlong student-athlete development program through monthly learning modules and creating an operational guidebook that follows collaborative best practices to support student-athletes as they transfer and transition to new institutions.
The athletic advising team is very grateful for this development opportunity and looks forward to expanding services and programming for student-athletes while continuing to stay at the forefront of industry standards and best practices.

Best Practices: Parent Edition [Fall ’24 reissue]
As students enter their college experience, parents are also entering a new phase of their lives As parents of college students, please refer to the tips below to help both you and your student transition to this new phase
Establish Communication Expectations
Because your scholar may be living away from home for the first time, it is key that expectations and new boundaries are established. Be sure to have an open and honest conversation about what you expect from your student and how often they should be communicating with you
Student Self-Advocacy
Be prepared to listen to understand rather than respond. If your student calls with a challenge, be sure to hear them out completely before responding. Now that they are a college student, it is important that they learn self-advocacy skills with your support.
Growing Personally, Academically, and Professionally
Your student is growing and changing as they experience what college has to offer both academically and socially When your student returns home to visit, they will have changed Don’t worry! Be sure to set expectations for their visit because even though they are changing, you are still their parent
Enjoy This Time
You have done the work preparing your young scholar for their education. Trust that you have given your child everything they need to succeed. Take a deep breath and as you let it out, do something nice for yourself. You have earned it!
