The provincial election campaign is in full gear in Delta as candidates in Delta South squared off at public forums twice in the same day, while Delta North has seen visits by Christy Clark and John Horgan. In Delta South, independent Nicholas Wong, Liberal Ian Paton, Green Larry Colero and

the NDP’s Bruce Reid have been out and about trying to drum up support, while Errol Sherley announced his candidacy with the BC Action Party just ahead of this week’s deadline. The South Delta chapter of the Probus Club held an allcandidates forum Wednesday in Tsawwassen with the Delta Chamber of Commerce hosting one later that evening at the South Delta Secondary theatre.

Clark paid a visit to Delta North Liberal incumbent Scott Hamilton and his supporters at a Scott Road eatery Wednesday, thanking them for their support and boasting about her government’s record on the economy. NDP Leader Horgan, meanwhile, was at North Delta Secondary on Tuesday to announce he will create a Community Partnership Fund to upgrade community facilities.

Voters have two more opportunities to hear from Delta South candidates. The Council of Canadians hosts a forum on Thursday, April 27 at 7:30 p.m. at the Ladner Community Centre, while Friends of Delta Hospital hosts a meeting on Saturday, April 29 at 2 p.m. at Tsawwassen United Church. The election is on May 9. • See Page 3 for coverage of all-candidates meetings.

It’s time once again for Optimist readers to choose their favourites. Our annual Readers’ Choice Awards, which are celebrating their 20th year in 2017, launch with today’s edition of the Optimist. Readers will be able to vote for their favourite South Delta shops and services in over 80 categories, everything from auto repair to U-brew. Voters can fill out a hard copy of the ballot, which is on pages 26 and 27, and drop it off at the Optimist office in Ladner or Pharmasave in Tsawwassen. Or they can visit our website, www.deltaoptimist.com, and make their choices online. We’re also asking readers to provide us with their best experience at a local retail or service business. The winners will be announced in June and will be formally presented with their awards at a banquet.
