The provincial election campaign is in full gear in Delta as candidates in Delta South squared off at public forums twice in the same day, while Delta North has seen visits by Christy Clark and John Horgan. In Delta South, independent Nicholas Wong, Liberal Ian Paton, Green Larry Colero and
the NDP’s Bruce Reid have been out and about trying to drum up support, while Errol Sherley announced his candidacy with the BC Action Party just ahead of this week’s deadline. The South Delta chapter of the Probus Club held an allcandidates forum Wednesday in Tsawwassen with the Delta Chamber of Commerce hosting one later that evening at the South Delta Secondary theatre.
Clark paid a visit to Delta North Liberal incumbent Scott Hamilton and his supporters at a Scott Road eatery Wednesday, thanking them for their support and boasting about her government’s record on the economy. NDP Leader Horgan, meanwhile, was at North Delta Secondary on Tuesday to announce he will create a Community Partnership Fund to upgrade community facilities.
Voters have two more opportunities to hear from Delta South candidates. The Council of Canadians hosts a forum on Thursday, April 27 at 7:30 p.m. at the Ladner Community Centre, while Friends of Delta Hospital hosts a meeting on Saturday, April 29 at 2 p.m. at Tsawwassen United Church. The election is on May 9. • See Page 3 for coverage of all-candidates meetings.
It’s time once again for Optimist readers to choose their favourites. Our annual Readers’ Choice Awards, which are celebrating their 20th year in 2017, launch with today’s edition of the Optimist. Readers will be able to vote for their favourite South Delta shops and services in over 80 categories, everything from auto repair to U-brew. Voters can fill out a hard copy of the ballot, which is on pages 26 and 27, and drop it off at the Optimist office in Ladner or Pharmasave in Tsawwassen. Or they can visit our website, www.deltaoptimist.com, and make their choices online. We’re also asking readers to provide us with their best experience at a local retail or service business. The winners will be announced in June and will be formally presented with their awards at a banquet.

A week after the provincial election writ was dropped, the first all-candidates forum in Delta South was held Wednesday. The local chapter of the Probus Club hosted the morning event at the Coast Tsawwassen Inn, which saw over 80 people hear what three of the hopefuls had to say on a range of questions that were given to them in advance. Liberal Ian Paton, Green Larry Colero and independent Nicholas Wong were in attendance. The NDP’s Bruce Reid was unable to attend, while organizers weren’t aware of the BC Action Party’s Errol Sherley’s candidacy as he only recently filed. After introductions, the first question asked was what the three thought of the acute care bed situation at Delta Hospital as well as access to home care. Noting the community had done a tremendous job defending the hospi-
tal, and how the hospital auxiliary and foundation have raised a combined $50 million over the years, Colero said the hospital might not quite be at the “hallway medicine” stage seen at other facilities, but there are still not enough beds. Noting his family’s long connection with the hospital, Paton said he worked with Delta North MLA Scott Hamilton to arrange a meeting with the health minister to address concerns raised by doctors. He said things are a lot better now than in the past with three operating rooms, a new cast clinic and other additions such as the preadmission clinic. Wong, however, a member of Friends of Delta Hospital, said it was action by independent MLA Vicki Huntington, including submitting a petition with thousands of names in the legislature, which finally prompted the minister to meet after eight months. Some of the other questions included whether a tolled bridge should be built. Paton said the

George Massey Tunnel Replacement Project is more than just a bridge as it includes a widening of Highway 99 aimed at saving people from idling in traffic every day. Wong said he wasn’t against a new crossing but the decision making has to be called into question, suggesting the project be delayed until an auditor general review, while Colero noted Huntington had asked for a business case for the bridge and was ridiculed. As far as the proposed Terminal 2 at Roberts Bank, Wong insisted it is a terrible idea that “flies in the face of cheaper alternatives.” He described it as “the most expensive port expansion in the history of mankind” that the province can stop by refusing to sell water lots to the feds. Colero said nobody is looking at the cumulative effects of all the projects taking place, while Paton suggested a “rejigging” of the existing facility along with utilizing ports at Prince Rupert and Ashcroft.

The number of special education assistants will be slashed in the Delta School District to help make up a projected deficit of just over $2 million. The proposed 2017-18 operating budget, which will be open for public input at a Delta board of education meeting next Tuesday, includes reducing the number of EAs in the district from 324 to 296. A few other reductions are also proposed, as well as using increased revenues from the International Student Program and Continuing Education and $500,000 from reserves, in an effort to balance the books. The deficit is a result of a budget shortfall of just over $900,000 being carried forward from last year, increases to teaching
and support staff salaries, increases in employee benefits and unfunded salary increases for exempt staff, including principals and vice-principals. The district is still in the red despite a $1.1 million increase in operating grant funding. Secretary-treasurer Joe Strain said the reason behind the reduction in EAs is that the number of special needs students, for the first time in several years, is projected to decrease. Those students bring additional funding from the province but the reduction in special needs pupils will mean a reduction of over $1 million in funding for that area. He explained that part of the budget is separate from the teacher funding allocation, which will see an increase in teaching staff thanks to the Supreme Court ruling in
favour of B.C. teachers last fall and a subsequent agreement the provincial government reached with the teachers’ union. About $1.87 million in new money is projected for Delta to address class size and composition provisions in that agreement. Strain said the exact dollar amount, how many teachers and where they will be allocated won’t be worked out until September when the district has its enrollment numbers and a clearer idea of classroom needs. After years of decline, enrolment in Delta has stabilized and is projected to grow by almost 100 students next year, bringing the total to around 15,300. Next Tuesday’s budget input meeting is set for 7 p.m. at the district office in Ladner. The board will vote on the budget May 9.

LOCATI O SAKS O N NEAR FF 5TH Kurves Brow Bar Offers Threading: An Effective & Natural Hair Removal Method Come in to Kurves and be delighted with the experience. You’ll love the result: eyebrows that are perfectly sculpted and natural. Leave the salon with a glowing natural look! Perfect eyebrows aren’t the only use for threading. Remove excess hair from your forehead or eliminate unwanted hair at the root from the upper lip, chin, sideburns, or full face, and feel renewed with healthy looking, silky skin, allowing for flawless makeup application. Next time you look in the mirror and realize it’s time to trim your eyebrows, put your tweezers away and head on down to Kurves Brow Bar in Tsawwassen. Let the expert staff thread away those unwanted hairs from your brows and face. The technique is reported to be more effective and longer lasting than either waxing or tweezing. It’s 100 per cent natural, requiring no products, chemicals or uncomfortable hot wax, and it’s safe for every kind of skin, even if you suffer from eczema or exceptionally dry skin. Sounds too good to be true? Believe it! Tried and true for thousands of years, threading is an ancient Asian method of hair removal that, in recent times, has been embraced by men and women in Western countries as their hair removal method of choice. Why do many top celebrities and models look so polished? One secret is that they’ve used threading treatments for years to give them that pictureperfect brow and smooth face. Practitioners at Kurves Brow Bar can make you look like a star too, and all with a thin, pure cotton thread and the technician’s deft and artful hands. With the thread, hair is twisted, rolling over untidy hairlines, following the natural straight lines of the brow hair. Because hair, including fine hair, is removed right down to the follicles, returning hair growth is delayed.

How Does Threading Work? Threading removes an entire row of hair, instead of just one administered painfully by tweezing that often causes irritation, swelling, redness, and ingrown hairs. Threading penetrates more deeply than even waxing, but it won’t peel and traumatize skin the way waxing does. For people with skin sensitivities or who use Retin A and Accutane, threading offers a safe and far more satisfactory alternative. How affordable is threading? Adult eyebrow trimming and cleaning is only $10.99 and takes about five to six minutes. The upper lip is $6; forehead, $6.99; chin, $8.99; sideburns, $10.99; and cheekbones for men, $10.The full facial treatment is $35.That’s easy on your pocketbook, while you leave easy on the eyes! t sounds appealing, but it could well be taking us down a muddled road. After next month’s provincial election, the tolls on the two newest bridges in the Lower Mainland will either be reduced or removed entirely, depending on which party forms government. These promises are definitely good news to those who regularly cross the Port Mann and Golden Ears bridges, but I wonder what it means for transportation funding in Greater Vancouver. For a number of years, municipal politicians have struggled to come up with equitable and lucrative funding sources for a myriad of transportation improvements proposed for the region. These are big ticket items that require serious cash, but how to raise that money has proved to be problematic. Gas taxes, property taxes, even adding a half-point to the sales tax, which was shot down in a plebiscite a couple of years ago, have either been implemented or considered, but at this point regional politicians still require something more. After the failed plebiscite, talk began to shift to some sort of road pricing model, the idea being that it made the most sense to have those that use the transportation network pay to improve it. All kinds of details would have to be worked out — what roads, how much, time of day, etc. — if this proposal were to move forward, but I can’t help but think the idea was dealt a significant blow by the populist promises made during the first week of the provincial campaign. How do you start charging drivers for using previously free highways and crossings when the province is reducing or eliminating tolls on the only two places where they’re levied now? It was always going to be a tough sell to have drivers pay to travel routes they navigate for free today, but it will be even more difficult to do so if bridge tolls are reduced or eliminated. I assume regional politicians could still proceed with road pricing in light of the toll promises, and given there are only so many revenue streams available to them that’s a distinct possibility, but should they do so it would create quite the double standard — provincial politicians are making it easier on beleaguered drivers while those at the regional level look to dig into their wallets.
Tolled tunnel will ease traffic and save $3.5 billion in debt
T
he bridge to replace the George Massey Tunnel is proposed at 10 lanes wide, which I thought was very wide to service the area so I looked on Wikipedia for the world’s longest and widest multi-pylon, cablestayed bridge. Wikipedia says that bridge joins the city of Jiaxing, China (population of 5,703,000 in 2010) to Shaoxing, China (population of 4,912,000 in 2010). The bridge is 10.1 kilometres long with six pylons and five spans (2,680 metres) carrying eight lanes of traffic. It was completed in 2013 after five years of construction at a cost of $2.23 billion US. So we will be building a wider bridge that will join Delta (population 102,655) to the City of Richmond (population 218,307). The bridge will be 3.3 kilometres long with two pylons and one span (650 metres) carrying 10 lanes of traffic. It is to take five years to construct and cost $2.62 billion US (estimated). The federal government has not budgeted any funds for this new structure but the provincial government says not to worry, we will pay for it ourselves by imposing a toll. That would be a great idea if it worked but the tolled Golden Ears Bridge lost $45.2 million in
Community Comment GREG HOOVER
2015 and the 10-lane Port Mann Bridge, located on the busiest highway in the province, loses $90 million a year. So best warn the grandchildren they are being sold a bridge in Delta. It only seems common sense that commuters coming from South Surrey will use the Alex Fraser Bridge and the East-West Connector to avoid the tolls. So when the folks from the new bridge meet the South Surrey folks at the four-lane Oak Street Bridge, what do you think will happen? If you look at this issue honestly, it’s obvious the bridge is for the container trucks to get to Richmond faster and not much else. The South Fraser Perimeter Road was built for the same reason and B.C. taxpayers will be on
the hook for its costs for decades. Both the Liberals and NDP are promising to eliminate or reduce the tolls. Typical political solution: Make promises to get elected and pass the costs to the rest of the province and the next generation. I have two solutions for this $3.5-billion issue: 1. Have Vancouver Fraser Port Authority and federal government pay for it. Building the container port south of the river was their choice and the movement of containerized goods through Delta is their issue and therefore it should be to their account. They should not be allowed to freeload off B.C. taxpayers. 2. If the new bridge is truly being built to relieve the traffic back-up at the tunnel and has nothing to do with getting ocean-going ships up the Fraser as Transportation Minister Todd Stone said, then I suggest we leave the tunnel where it is and toll it. Like a tolled 10-lane bridge, a good percentage of drivers will avoid the tunnel, making crossing into Richmond easier, but the province will save $3.5 billion of more debt. Splitting opposition vote will mean Liberal victory
Editor: Re: Turn three candidates into one, letter to the editor, April 12 Jim Ormesher does make an excellent point. Splitting the vote in Delta South could mean a Liberal victory as this was a Liberal riding prior to 2009. However, the last two elections saw Delta South vote for a candidate that did not have to follow a strict party line and be indebted to “big money” donors. The only agenda independent MLA Vicki Huntington had was what was in the best interest of South Delta. The 2009 election
resulted in the independent winning with the NDP and Green Party taking 14.88 per cent of the vote. In the 2013 election, the independent took 47.8 per cent over a Liberal (36.65 per cent) and NDP (15.55 per cent). The Green Party did not run a candidate in deference to Huntington. Many New Democrats voted strategically for the independent. So based on those statistics, it looks as though the NDP and Green Party drew the short straws and as Ormesher suggests, should line up behind the strong public support of an independent candidate. As an independent,
Nicholas Wong can support the NDP in the legislature with views about health, education, social assistance and protection of the ALR. He will be free to vote with any party that benefits Delta South. Huntington endorses and has stated that she and Wong share many of the same values. He is surrounded by a large, well organized team and a substantial supporter base. They are people who strongly believe in the concept of independence and a better democracy. I feel that if I support Wong, I will have the best of all worlds. Margaret Hayhurst
New bridge is all about marine traffic
Editor: Re: Bridge and dredging will benefit larger ships, letter to the editor, April 12 Jim Ronback’s assertion about the new bridge is correct. Annieville residents received meeting
notice several months ago to advise of an impending application for a grain terminal to be located up river from Fraser Surrey Docks. Of the three different sized ships that would
service the terminal, none would access the terminal with the current tunnel as their draft is too great. This bridge is about marine traffic not auto/people traffic. Rick Hobbs

Power washing restrictions needed to maintain some peace and quiet
Editor: And so begins mad power washing season. I had a long week last week and was looking forward to some weekend chill time in the back yard. I’d like to say thanks to the two guys in the neighbourhood who decided to power wash all day, not only on Saturday, but on Easter Sunday as well. Needless to say it was a real treat for me and the family to listen to. I hope
you read this because I bit my tongue for the sake of keeping peace amongst the neighbours. Before I close my rant I’d also like to give a super special shout-out to all you obsessive power washers, the ones who will take extra care to get that last streak of grime off the concrete at the expense of the neighbours’ sanity. Delta council, I’m begging you to put some restrictions on power
washing this year — maximum amount of time per day, maximum amount of days per year per address. Maybe electric only. And do some enforcement. And lastly, create an awareness of how surfaces can be cleaned effectively without all the noise pollution of power washers. We can’t seem to police ourselves. I read these rants in the local paper every year yet nothing changes. Greg McDonald
It’s a shame Harris Barn isn’t well used
Editor: Three years ago, my husband and I celebrated our 60th wedding anniversary at the Harris Barn. It was a success to the point that many of the 125 or so guests from distant places commented favourably on the barn and marvelled at how it was the perfect place for such a celebration. We certainly agreed. Now, it seems, such is past history as I have
been informed Delta council has acceded to a complaint — not about our event — that the celebrants were too noisy and thus shut down the barn to such affairs. From all appearances, it seems that council members did just that — they caved in and now Harris Barn sits alone, forgotten and, for the most part, in need of a good cleaning. The building’s exterior
is very much in need of attention. After so much hype and loving care having been expended on Harris Barn, it seems a bit sacrilegious to just shut it down, or reduce its service to the community in such a callous manner. It is a well-known expression that at times heads will roll. Perhaps this is one of those times. SM Cruickshank

Leonie (left) and Chris Bunz opened a Modern Music School franchise earlier this month.
Business Buzz A Modern Music School franchise location is up and running in Tsawwassen. Owners Chris and Leonie Bunz opened the doors earlier this month to the school that focuses on group lessons and a positive approach to learning music. “The mission of the school is, really, we want everybody to love music,” says Chris. He notes there are many positive aspects to teaching group lessons. The learning curve is higher in group settings while it’s less intimidating and stressful for students, who are able to learn from each other as well, he explains. Bunz also notes teachers at Modern Music
School are required to go through a three-year training program. He adds great teachers make all the difference and they strive to have the best. The school, which is open to all ages, offers training in bass, acoustic and electric guitar, vocals, drums, keyboard and piano as well as a band program. Music education benefits brain development and really helps children to develop self-discipline, he says. Kling Klong, a program for kids 18 months to six years, is also available. It offers a fun approach to music where kids play instruments (like drums, shakers and bells) that are right for their state of development, says Leonie. Modern Music School, which has been around for three decades, is headquartered in Germany.

Kids on the Go
Kale Kale is a mature adult chihuahua mix, and he weighs about nine pounds. This little guy is looking for a very special forever home with either a very special single person or couple. Kale has had a rough previous life. He was underweight, suffered from serious corneal ulcers that no one bothered to treat, had a lot of anxiety and felt very unsafe. Kale would like to meet a person(s) who will appreciate what a good boy he is, and help him continue to build trust. Kale has become such a good boy, and is very cuddly and affectionate. He is very receptive to affection, give kisses, and will even climb into your clothes (while you’re still in them) to keep warm. Kale can be timid, especially about being picked up. If you pick him up when he’s not ready, he cries out. If you wait for him with your hands outstretched, he’ll know what you want and will get up on his hind legs to tell you it’s ok to pick him up. He loves to cuddle in bed with you at night, and is a bit of a bed hog. Due to his former corneal issues, he is permanently blind in the left eye. Other than some depth perception issues, he has pretty good vision. A home with only a couple of stairs would suit Kale just fine because stairs present the only real challenge for his vision. Kale hopes to meet a gentle, patient person who can assure him that he is safe. A retiree or retired couple would absolutely love this little guy’s good nature, small size, and easy exercise regime. A single person who is looking for a gentle, devoted companion would also be delighted by him. Kale has improved by leaps and bounds with his anxiety, and he would love to find a person who is patient and understanding and will love this little man who has a lovely heart and gentle spirit.

Delta Trades and Technical Career Fair
Explore a career in the trades at fair Exhibitors will provide hands-on introduction; Job Fair and Boat Race added this year
The Corporation of Delta is once again connecting residents with a career in the trades by hosting the 2017 Delta Trades and Technical Career Fair. The free event is set for Thursday, April 27 from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Sungod Recreation Centre in North Delta. Since Mayor Lois Jackson started the event in 2013, it has provided a platform for people to get inspired about careers in the trades. And while you’ll see plenty of young people perusing the booths, thinking about becoming a carpenter or maybe a chef, the event is meant for anyone and everyone, whether you’re at a crossroads pondering a new path or thinking about a career for the first time. More than three dozen exhibitors will be set up in the arena and the surrounding parking lot, offering hands-on introductions to a variety of

Volunteers needed to drive cancer patients IAN JACQUES
C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r
Volunteer drivers are needed in South Delta to assist with a program that helps ease the burden and stress of patients attending cancer treatments. The Volunteer Cancer Drivers Society was established in 2015 following the unexpected cancellation of a similar program offered by the Canadian Cancer Society. The society serves Delta, Surrey, Langley, Abbotsford, Maple Ridge, Mission, the Tri-Cities, New Westminster and the North Shore. Volunteer drivers offer round trip transportation for patients living in these areas for treatment at facilities across the Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley. Drivers are reimbursed for the kilometres driven, tolls and parking costs and are connected to the people they will be driving in a safe and secure manner. Driver/dispatch coordinator Bill Ruppel said they currently have three drivers in South Delta, but would love to see more. “We are looking for volunteer drivers to accommodate some of the needs we are experiencing to transfer patients from Victoria Hospital for scans at VGH,” Ruppel said. “Our job is to pick those patients up at the ferry terminal, take them to VGH and then take them back to the ferry terminal. Efficiency is an issue as costs are high, so ideally we would love to get more drivers from Tsawwassen and Ladner rather than say Abbotsford for this needed

Volunteer Cancer Drivers Society vice president George Garrett is all smiles before heading to his next appointment. area.” He said local drivers would also assist patients living in South Delta who need to travel to Vancouver or elsewhere in the Lower Mainland for treatment. “We need people who have the time and the inclination to help,” he said. “A lot of our drivers seem to have some previous connection to cancer, so there is sensitivity around that and a willingness to help out.” Vice president George Garrett said when the Canadian Cancer Society cancelled the program, a few volunteers, including himself, stepped up to form the new society. “People had nowhere to turn. We had an example of one lady who lived in Cloverdale and her family couldn’t take her to her appointments, so she took a taxi — $100 to Vancouver — one way. People can’t afford that,” said Garrett. “In the early stages of
treatment you are going in some cases 25 trips. It’s very hard on these families. Public transit is not an option, so we formed this new society and we have grown to more than 500 drivers throughout the region.” The provincial government has provided some grant money, municipalities like Delta and Surrey have also provided funding as has the Peace Arch Hospital Foundation and various fire department foundations. “Our biggest challenge has been fundraising because our society just continues to grow,” said Ruppel. “The demand is growing quickly. We are looking for exposure to the public in all these communities not only with volunteers, but also financial support as well.” To learn more about the program, call 604-5155400 or visit www.volunteercancerdrivers.ca.

Volunteers keep waters safe NICO HERNANDEZ
Optimist contributor
Members of the allvolunteer Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue Station 8 keep the waters around Delta safe. The unit has been providing marine search and rescue services and boating safety education for the past 40 years. Trained crews respond to all kinds of situations in the Strait of Georgia, from towing a boat when it runs out of gas to rescuing surfers from high winds to saving the lives of those capsized at sea. Volunteers also do boat
inspections as well as visit schools, local groups and yacht clubs to teach proper safety procedures. Station 8 — Delta is the only Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue unit in B.C. that has its boat — The Spirit of Delta IV — stationed in the United States. From that base in the Point Roberts Marina, it sends teams of four to six members led by a captain, called a coxswain, to respond to boating emergencies 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. A coxswain for the past four years, Dale Anaka says he joined because he wants to help people and
give back to the community. “It’s also a way of saying thank you to the community and to the fellow mariners and people who got into distress,” Anaka says. “I’m just glad to be able to be of assistance and help them out.” The unit is not funded by government, so it relies on fundraising events. It will be holding its second annual Tour de Duck in September in which yellow rubber ducks race on the Fraser River. Anyone who wants to volunteer can call 604-2058955 or email rcmsar8@ gmail.com.

Finding time to enjoy the benefits of volunteering
Helping others also helps you. Statistics show that volunteering improves your mental health as well as develops your communication, interpersonal and job-related skills. The Canadian Mental Health Association reports that volunteers often enjoy a sense of belonging and accomplishment that helps with mood. The ElderCollege Singers will present a Celebrating Canada’s 150th concert next Friday at KinVillage Community Centre in Tsawwassen. The performance will include a new song written by choir member Jean Kay.
Canada, Our Canada is about “being proud to be Canadian,” Kay says. She says the group was looking for Canadian music for the concert, which celebrates the country’s 150th birthday. “I thought I should try writing one myself. And I did.” Kay says she wrote the
lyrics and music while the song was arranged by Ron Smail. Kay, who says she writes a poem every day, wrote her first book of poetry in 2000 after retiring from a sales event coordinator position with Canadian Airlines. She notes another locally written song, Margaret
Scott’s Delta, BC, will be sung at the upcoming concert. The ElderCollege Singers are directed by Pat Rogers. Rod Asher is the group’s pianist. The concert is scheduled for Friday, April 28 from 1 to 2:30 p.m. at KinVillage Community
Centre, 5430-10th Ave., Tsawwassen. A $3 admission charge includes coffee and doughnuts. • Kay says any other choirs or groups interested in singing her song can contact her through her website (poetrytoinspire. com) or email (jk@poetrytoinspire.com).

Hearts of Hope event organizer Dawn Magee says she’s hoping for a big turnout for the concert. “We like an eclectic mix of music,” says Magee. “The Brookswood Country Band features Ladner’s Erin and Mark Rogers. They are great kids and this band performs occasionally at The Landing. “The Darlene Ketchum Quartet offers up soul/jazz and funk, so we have two very different bands that will offer a unique musical experience. Both are excellent, and we are hoping for a big turnout. A concert isn’t a concert without an audience.” Doors open at 6 p.m. for the silent auction with the concert at 7 p.m. Tickets for Hearts of Hope are $20 for adults, $15 for youth and seniors and free for children eight and under. Five BC Parks Campgrounds for Escaping the Crowds Pitching a tent in one of British Columbia’s many provincial parks is the perfect way to get out of town. Here are five lesser-known provincial parks where you are more likely to enjoy a quiet night (or several) in a vehicleaccessible or walk-in campsite. INLAND LAKE PROVINCIAL PARK Located in Powell River on the Sunshine Coast, Inland Lake Provincial Park features a scenic 13-km (8-mi) wheelchair-accessible loop trail that’s perfect for hiking and cycling. The 2,757-hectare (6812-acre) park attracts both day and overnight visitors with its canoeing, kayaking, swimming, trout fishing, and wildlife-viewing opportunities. As a stop on the Sunshine Coast Trail, Inland Lake might even inspire you to backpack all or part of this 180-km (111-mi) path maintained by volunteers with the Powell River Parks and Wilderness Society. (Another multi-day challenge of similarly epic proportions is the Powell Forest Canoe Route, with its multiple portages.) The campground near the south end of the lake offers 22 drive-in campsites and pit toilets. If you need a break from camp fare, a craft brewery (Townsite Brewing) and restaurants serving up Mexican, Indian, and other cuisines are just 10 km (6 mi) away in Powell River.
SILVER BEACH PROVINCIAL PARK Does camping on the site of a historical gold-rush town appeal to you? Ogden City is now called Seymour Arm, but some of its 19th-century remains, including a graveyard, lie in Silver Beach Provincial Park. Covering 130 hectares (321 acres) along Shuswap Lake, this park hosts 35 vehicle-accessible campsites and pit toilets. From Highway 1 near Chase, it’s a 83-km (52-mi) drive northeast on paved and gravel roads. The Shuswap Lake location means a plethora of water activities are available. Silver Beach can serve as your base for canoeing, scuba diving, waterskiing, windsurfing, swimming, and fishing (19 species, such as rainbow trout and burbot). KINASKAN LAKE PROVINCIAL PARK Found along Highway 37 between two much larger parks— Mount Edziza and Spatsizi Plateau Wilderness—Kinaskan Lake Provincial Park in northwestern BC offers a remote but still drive-in camping experience. The 1,800-hectare (4,447-acre) park, 100 km (62 mi) south of Dease Lake, has 50 vehicle-accessible campsites and pit toilets. For wildlife watchers, sightings of bears, coyotes, hares, martens, moose, and wolves are possible. Both canoeing
and fishing for rainbow trout are recommended on Kinaskan and Natadesleen lakes. The latter drains into the Iskut River, which flows over a staircase of Jurassic sedimentary rocks at Cascade Falls. For the adventurous backpacker, an overgrown trail leads from Kinaskan Lake to Mowdade Lake in Mount Edziza Provincial Park. NEWCASTLE ISLAND MARINE PROVINCIAL PARK Access to Newcastle Island Marine Provincial Park is by boat only, so its 18 campsites are of the walk-in variety. Conveniently, the campground is just five minutes on foot from where the passenger ferry from Nanaimo docks. Designated a provincial park in 1961, Newcastle Island lies in the territory of the Snuneymuxw First Nation and has a storied history. Middens point to at least two historic village sites in the 363-hectare (897-acre) park. Starting in the 1800s, coal mining and sandstone quarrying took place on the island before it was turned into a resort. The Newcastle Island of today boasts 22 km (14 mi) of easy hiking trails. The park has both flush and pit toilets as well as coin-operated showers and a playground.
KOOTENAY LAKE PROVINCIAL PARK There are two vehicle-accessible campgrounds in Kootenay Lake Provincial Park, and one of them even has wi-fi available for a fee. Located 25 km (16 mi) north of Kaslo on Highway 31, both the Davis Creek and Lost Ledge campgrounds offer shady sites and beach access. Covering 343 hectares (847 acres), the park consists of five sites along 100-km-long Kootenay Lake. The Purcell and Selkirk mountains rise on opposite sides of the water, which invites canoeing, kayaking, fishing, swimming, and windsurfing. (South of Kaslo, Cody Caves Provincial Park is open for guided tours.) Davis Creek is the campground with the wi-fi. It has 32 drive-in campsites, while Lost Ledge offers 14. Pit toilets are on site for taking care of business. For front-country campgrounds, BC Parks accepts reservations up to four months in advance of arrival. You can book at discovercamping.ca , or call 1-800-689-9025 (Canada and the U.S.) or 1-519-826-6850 (international). Science shows us how to slow aging process Add high-intensity interval training to workouts
Well on Your Way P.J. WREN
JOIN US AT OUR OPEN HOUSE RUNWAY END SAFETY AREAS (RESAS) AT YVR
I don’t know anyone who is a fan of getting older. However, it is a necessary evil because the alternative is something nobody wants. So it was with great interest that I read the latest study released by the Mayo Clinic. It claims to have found our fountain of youth and much to my delight, it’s in the form of sweat. High-intensity aerobic exercise, or high-intensity interval training (HIIT), can apparently slow down and even reverse the aging process. While we all know that exercise in general is beneficial as we age — it helps to ward off disease, improves our muscle mass, bone and joint health, as well as maintaining a good quality of life — what science did not know was what type of exercise would be the best for aging. And apparently to reverse the aging process you must start with our cells. You see, our body is made up of trillions of cells and each cell has a job to do. Cells that do the same job combine
and form things like our muscles, skin and bones, or our organs such as our heart, liver and lungs. These cells, however, are useless without their driver — our mitochondria. Now this guy is the real powerhouse of the cell. It’s the mitochondria’s job to take in nutrients, break them down and then create the energy needed for the cell to do its job. As we age, our mitochondria slow down (what doesn’t slow down as we get older?), and stops doing the bang-up job it did in our younger years. This decline, in turn, directly impacts our health in the form of aging. Mitochondrial decline is also responsible for other fun things like: the ability to burn fat, diabetes, heart disease, neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s and dementia, as well as limiting our ability to perform sports and activities that require any type of endurance. (Good excuse next time someone wants you to join them in a marathon. Just tell them your mitochondria won’t let you.) However, add some HIIT workouts to your weekly routine and the Mayo Clinic says you can reverse all of that. According to the study, interval training (HIIT) boosted the ability of the mitochondria within the cells by 69 per cent in the older volunteers and by 49 per cent in the younger group. That’s a huge boost! The study was funded
by the National Institutes of Health and used 36 volunteers. Half of the volunteers were aged from 18 to 30, and the other half between 65 and 80. They were divided into three supervised exercise training programs that lasted for three months. The HIIT group did three days a week of cycling, with high-intensity bouts alternating with low-intensity pedaling, and two days a week of moderately difficult treadmill walking. The strength training group worked out with weights for two days each week, while the third group cycled and lifted weights five days a week, but less strenuously than the two other groups. Not surprisingly, the researchers found the strength training groups improved their strength the best — important to work on as we age — but it was the group that participated in the HIIT workouts that earned the greatest results at the cellular level. How can you add HIIT workouts to your week? Add any interval that you consider hard for 20 to 60 seconds, with equal to double the time for recovery. Aim for a total workout of 20 to 30 minutes, one to three times a week. As for activities, try adding sprints into your running routine, hills if you are a walker or crank it up when on the bike. PJ Wren is a local trainer and writer. You can reach her at her new fitness studio in the heart of Ladner, www.thestudio.ca.

Signs of the times Hats off for the sign makers of South Delta. In particular, whoever “dresses” the great blue heron that sits at the entrance to Ladner on Ladner Trunk Road. I say, “Bravo!” You have made it clear this village community is full of surprises and a fair bit of fun thrown in for good measure. I think that’s the mark of a good sign. There are also some great signs that are found throughout the Christian community. Like the heron, they are simple in nature but always point to a deeper message. Recently, we have had a sign at the corner of All Saints Anglican Church that has announced “Taize” and “Cracking the Code.”

terned after Christ’s life. Music and prayer formed a big part of the community’s life — and Taize music has become popular and used in worship around the world. “Cracking the Code” was a series of teachings in trying to unwrap some of the church-words we use, but rarely explain… like grace, glory, sin, salvation and, for the Anglicans in the crowd, the famous word propitiation. But here’s the interesting thing: whether it is words or music or signposts, our focus is always on telling the truth of God’s love for us all. The sign we write on our hearts this Easter-tide is simple, “Alleluia, Jesus Christ is risen!”

Best-selling author to read from her latest book during Black Bond stop
Cea Sunrise Person, the author of two memoirs about her counterculture upbringing, North of Normal and Nearly Normal, is coming to Ladner. The Vancouver author will read from her new book, discuss her unique life and sign books at Black Bond Books in Ladner
next Wednesday, April 26, at 6:30 p.m. A few years ago, Person wrote a memoir, which became an instant bestseller and has been selling steadily ever since. In North of Normal, she wrote with grace and candor about her unconventional childhood — her early years living in
a tipi in Alberta with her pot-smoking, free-loving counterculture family; the numerous misadventures she survived with her mother and her mother’s boyfriends; and the bold escape she made from her family at 13 through a modelling career. It is also the story of one girl’s deep-seated desire
for normality — a desire that enabled her to risk everything, overcome adversity and achieve her dreams. Her new book, Nearly Normal, was also an instant bestseller. A continuation of her story, it outlines pieces of her life omitted from the first book.

Recyclables for a good cause
For the past year, residents of City Homes in Tsawwassen have been saving their recyclables in order to raise money towards the Delta Special Olympics soccer program. To date, nearly $500 has been raised for new nets and soccer balls. “Every time I’d go down to the garbage and recycling room, I’d see empty cans and bottles in the bins, and that inspired the
launch of the City Homes recycling program,” said Dan Patching, local mortgage broker and resident of City Homes. Since then, two separate recycling bins specific for bottles and cans were created, making it easy for residents to donate. The program earns close to $20 per week. City Homes wants to challenge other local complexes to do the same.

Isles launch season in Alberta Juniors competing in Rocky Mountain League tourney prior to league opener MARK BOOTH
m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
A new era for the defending B.C. Junior “A” Lacrosse League champions will start this weekend in Alberta. The Delta Islanders will tune-up for the upcoming 2017 BCJALL campaign by participating at a Rocky Mountain Lacrosse League pre-season tournament in Red Deer. Delta is slated to play four games in three days — taking on the Saskatchewan Swat, Edmonton Miners, Calgary Mounties and Okotoks Raiders. It was the Miners who defeated the Islanders at last summer’s Minto Cup national championships, while the Raiders are coached by Ladner native Andrew McBride. The tourney will mark the debut of Islanders head coach Kyle Goundrey who has been working with a group of junior and intermediate age players for the past eight weeks. Twenty-three of them will be making the trek across the Rockies. Delta plays its regular season opener April 29 when the Nanaimo Timbermen visit Ladner at 5 p.m. Goundrey takes over from Greg Rennie who is now solely focusing on his general manager duties as the program is going through a significant transition. The team is waiting for the arrival of 10 players from school or junior hockey commitments, which provides an opportunity to take a long look at an outstanding 2000-born age group that won the provincial midget title last summer. According to Goundrey, it provides the perfect time to turn the Islanders into a full five-year program for graduating midget players. B.C. is currently the only province that features an intermediate league for 17-and-18-year-olds and

Delta islanders new head coach Kyle Goundrey is flanked by assistant coaches Logan Schuss (left) and Peter McFetridge, both members of the Vancouver Stealth, during Monday’s training session at the Ladner Leisure Centre. The defending B.C. Junior “A” Lacrosse League champions are off to Red Deer this weekend for a preseason tournament. that may soon change. “With the majority of our players still away, it’s going to be interesting to see how this plays out. Luckily we have a good younger group in intermediate and we will be using them as much as possible in the early part of the season until everyone comes back,” said Goundrey. “These intermediates are a big part of our junior program and they will be playing junior full-time, if not by the end of this season, then definitely next. We need to make sure they are in the mix and understand how bigger and faster the next level is so they will be prepared and ready. “This (five-year program) is what everyone else in the country does. Our governors want it too and why not? Last year
was the first time B.C. has won the Minto Cup in a while.” The Islanders are expected to take a step back this season but could still be in the mix for a top four position. They received some good news when offensive standout Ryan Jones informed them he plans on continuing his lacrosse career despite being a regular in the Western Hockey League with the Vancouver Giants. It will get even better if 2015 rookie-of-the-year Tre Lemire decides to continue his box career after returning from Ohio State University where he has enjoyed a spectacular freshman season. Goundrey believes his experienced coaching staff can make a difference too. The former NLL and WLA
star’s assistants include Peter McFetridge, Logan Schuss and Randy Daly. “I think very good coaching can go a long way at this level,” he added. “Including (intermediate coaches) Tom (Johnson) and Jake (Doucette), all of us have played in the NLL and know what it takes to do that. We have won championships. “We are taking what coaches taught us to win and trying to implement it with the juniors. Hopefully, with different systems and things, we will surprise some people with our structure.” Rennie took in Monday’s practice at the Ladner Leisure Centre from his new vantage point in the stands. He is excited with what lies ahead as Delta will try to

win its first-ever provincial “A” intermediate title over the next two years then take another run at getting back to the Minto Cup. “We have to do what is right for both teams,” he said. “We will be doing double duty with a lot of these kids and if things change or situation arises in May or June we will reevaluate it. Intermediate is about developing and I would like to win provincals. The (2000 group) has never done well as first years and something has to change. Being in training camp with 21-yearolds is all about the process and development. “Our juniors will not be the most gifted team like the last couple of years but I like the sandpaper and grit of this group. I think we will be better than a lot of people think.”

Lax4Life raises over $7,000 for Canadian Cancer Society Delta Lacrosse hosted its sixth annual Lax4Life fundraiser recently, raising more than $7,000 for the Canadian Cancer Society. The 11-and-a-half hour game at the Ladner Leisure Centre brought together players from Ladner, Tsawwassen, North Delta, Surrey, Richmond and Seattle ranging in age from five to 40-plus. The participants played 30-minute shifts with each team featuring a mix of players. Delta Lacrosse was excited to see so many lacrosse members and communityminded supporters take in the event and enjoyed the presence of Vancouver Stealth mascot Bomber and a couple of their Bombshell cheerleaders. Delta Lacrosse would like to thank all volunteers, athletes, coaches and officials that offered their time and support for this great cause. And of course, all the sponsors and partners who helped make the day even more special including: Hammerberg Lawyers LLP, Service Master of Vancouver, Vancouver Stealth, Ice Level Sports, Fresh Slice Pizza (Tsawwassen), Save on Foods, Aileen Noguer - RE/ Max, BC Lacrosse Association, Thrifty Foods, Tsawwassen Collision Ltd , East Coast Dyes, Victoria Shamrocks Lacrosse, Harbour Barbers, The Messy Dresser, Keg Richmond, The Richmond Family, The Leong Family, The Burt Family, Lux’s Butcher Meats and Specialty Foods,

ACCOUNTING/ FINANCIAL
Mary passed away peacefully with her husband Walter at her side. Mary was born in Vancouver and moved to Ladner in 1929, where she lived most of her life. Mary’s first job was with the Royal Bank in Ladner, where she knew everyone, including their account numbers. She was proud of the fact that the bank manager came to their home to hire her after high school graduation. Mary met Walter in 1967. They were married in 1968 and moved into a fixer-upper home that they owned for 48 years. Mary was a great homemaker and loved cooking, knitting, sewing, gardening, and putting on great meals with all the trimmings for family and friends. Mary and Walter had various recreational vehicles that they used for camping, sightseeing, and many family reunions. She enjoyed flying to such places as the United States, New Zealand, Hawaii, Germany, and Cuba to visit friends and family where possible. Cruising was also one of her favourite escapes. At home, Mary was fastidious about her laundry and insisted on using a wringer washer long after they became extinct. It meant Walter looking for an old washer to replace a previous old washer. Mary was battling dementia for the last 10 years. She is survived by her loving husband Walter, sister Margaret Kittson and many nephews and nieces. There will be a Celebration of Life held on May 6, 2017 from 12 - 3 PM at the Ladner Baptist Church, 5624 Ladner Trunk Road (Highway #10). Arrangements are being handled by Delta Funeral Home in Ladner. 604-946-6040 In lieu of flowers you are welcome to make donations to the charity of your choice.

Every week, we actively check our major competitors’ flyers and match the price on hundreds of items. Look for the Ad Match message in store for the items we’ve actively matched. Plus, we’ll match any major competitor’s flyer item if you show us! *we match prices & Guaranteed Lowest Prices Applies only to our major supermarket competitors’ flyer items. Major supermarket competitors are determined solely by us based on a number of factors which can vary by store location. We will match the competitor’s advertised price only during the effective date of the competitor’s flyer advertisement. WE RESERVE THE RIGHT TO LIMIT QUANTITIES (note that our major supermarket competitors may not). Due to the fact that product is ordered prior to the time of our Ad Match checks, quantities may be limited. We match identical items (defined as same brand, size, and attributes) and in the case of fresh produce, meat, seafood and bakery, we match a comparable item (as determined solely by us). We will not match competitors’ “multi-buys” (eg. 2 for $4), “spend x get x”, “Free”, “clearance”, discounts obtained through loyalty programs, or offers related to our third party operations (post office, gas bars, dry cleaners etc.). We reserve the right to cancel or change the terms of this program at any time.
