Parents continue push for bus Proposal is presented to school trustees in wake of decision to eliminate rural service BY

SANDOR GYARMATI

sgyarmati@delta-optimist.com

Parents hoping the school bussing program can be saved have put forward a new proposal to the Delta school board. A large contingent, angry and concerned, packed a board meeting Tuesday evening to continue to voice their displeasure about the elimination of the program, citing safety concerns and the lack of adequate public transit in rural areas. The board approved a series of budget cuts a few weeks ago,

including elimination of bussing for most students. To make up for a phased $728,000 transportation funding cut from Victoria, the district eliminated rural service, but maintained it for special needs students. “Just to reiterate, there are no sidewalks, there are no streetlights,” Cheryl Ross told trustees. “There are no traffic control lights to intersections and there are deep ditches, and there’s heavy traffic and transport trucks and commercial vehicles that go up Highway See BUS page 3

TFN putting focus on culture

New self-government reclaiming traditions so 21st century legislature draws wisdom from forefathers BY

SANDOR GYARMATI

sgyarmati@delta-optimist.com

The Tsawwassen First Nation is rediscovering its rich culture and heritage. Despite the major development and economic changes on the horizon, which will soon alter the face of the First Nation, many in the community recognized a need to incorporate a cultural aspect as part of that change, so they don’t leave something important behind. It was one of the campaign platforms of new Chief Bryce Williams, a young carver who promised members there would be greater efforts to revive the TFN’s culture. “I am also confident that we as a community, youth, elders and all members, can revive and rebuild our language and culture together. The youth are our next generation of leaders to come and we need to focus on them so we can assist and encourage them to learn and embrace their traditions along with getting a strong education,” Williams said. One of the members who has taken on that role is Valerie Cross-Blackett, manager of government services, who’s helping integrate many of the traditions into 21st century gov-

ernance. She had additional cultural elements introduced as part of the TFN’s legislative sessions, which already had a ceremonial aspect. The opening legislative session last fall saw the new squiquel, otherwise known as the legislative chair, receive a new ceremonial sash. The squiquel also received his own “talking feather.” It means he does not have to wait for the legislature’s feather that’s passed among members to be handed to him in order to speak. The young feather runner also received special ceremonial sash. It’s just one example of the efforts underway to bring back traditions. “My perspective on it is that it’s a reclaiming of government. The things that were historically taken away from First Nations and aboriginals in their governments’ abilities was huge part of their culture,” said Cross-Blackett. “So if we’re going to be claiming self-government, something we want to move forward with, part of that is going to be reclaiming lost cultural practices and that will be the core of reclaiming our identity, which was also clearly lost throughout Canada in a lot of the aboriginal communities.”

Cross-Blackett said her role is also to seek out advice from elders to create a blend of traditional and modern government. If you know who you are and where you come from, she said, you’ll find strength in moving forward and facing challenges. “It will give that sense

when you are debating difficult issues, it gives people that connection to be able to debate them in a healthy manner, rather than an angry manner, which can happen when people get passionate about their views. I think our culture allows us to have that atmosphere.

“It’s clearly part of who I am. I want to contribute to the success of our First Nation. I believed in the treaty and I believe in moving forward. Now, I believe in the government working towards a selfsufficient, healthy in all ways First Nation, so they can be break that cycle of

dependency, be a part of the economy and work towards restoring the historical pride of our members. I want to make sure we have those opportunities to succeed and reclaim ourselves.” Some other elements added to government include involving the community in different aspects and bringing in elders for prayer. Cross-Blackett said young people in the community have approached her asking to be feather runners in upcoming legislative sessions, which shows an increasing interest. Cross-Blackett said the TFN doesn’t want to simply be another level of government, but something unique. Meantime, the TFN’s language and culture department recently announced to members that it will be starting youth and adult language classes. Members are asked to bring their drums and clappers. The TFN is hosting a community Celebration for National Aboriginal Day on Friday, June 21. That date had been chosen as National Aboriginal Day because of the cultural significance of the summer solstice and because many aboriginal groups mark that day as a time to celebrate their heritage.

hours. Noting parents were never given adequate time to work with the district to come up with creative solutions, Brad Sherwin presented a proposal in which the district would extend the program for at least one more year in the hope something can be worked out. Parents would also pay $200 for the year, a little less with each additional child. “Now that the decision has been made, we’re in a position of having to find alternatives in a very difficult situation for a lot

of parents in a very short time,” Sherwin said. Speaking on behalf of another group of parents, Sherwin noted the cancellation occurred during the provincial election period, eliminating any opportunity to push Delta’s case in Victoria. “It gives us as parents the opportunity to lobby the province to review its position and our unique geography, and doing this in a way that’s respectful, without going over there with pitchforks,” Sherwin said. Chair Laura Dixon, noting the budget process was a difficult one but is now concluded, said the district will answer the ques-

tions and looks forward to working with parents. The response offered little assurance to some at the meeting, who said afterward the board didn’t seem interested in the proposal. Also attending the meeting was Delta South MLA Vicki Huntington, who had been invited by parents and has been asked to lobby the school board and provincial government. Huntington expressed angst when Sherwin showed her a spreadsheet outlining how the new provincial rural funding formula was based on distance from the City of Vancouver, which means metropolitan Victoria is provided with funding,

while rural Ladner gets none. Meanwhile, the school board faces a possible human rights complaint from Connor Stewart, a Grade 8 student at South Delta Secondary who lives in Boundary Bay and is deaf. His mother, Jeannie Stewart, told the Optimist although Connor is designated as special needs by the province, the school district made its own arbitrary decision which special needs kids are entitled to bus service and which ones aren’t. She said he has already talked to a lawyer and the B.C. Human Rights Tribunal about filing a complaint.

A school board spokesperson told the Optimist once a new cabinet is sworn in, trustees will repeat their invitation for the minister of education to visit Delta. As far as helping parents find other transportation options, the district held a meeting last week in Tsawwassen and one in North Delta this week. Possible options include a list of licensed daycares, a community bussing option, where parents could rent a bus, or carpooling. Mayor Lois Jackson offered to present the district’s recommendations to TransLink for increased public bus service for school children.

BUS from page 1 10, where our children would have to walk to school. “They can’t walk, they can’t ride their bikes, the distance is too dangerous for our children to safely get to school. It’s just as dangerous for an adult to walk to school,” she said. Speaking on behalf of a group of East Ladner families, Ross said they looked into hiring their own private bus but the cost is simply too high. She added daycare is not an option for her son, who is 12, while it’s asking too much for parents to find new jobs with different

Tsawwassen resident Karen Marchand says she used to pride herself on being a healthy person, but all that changed a few years ago. In late 2008, she began suffering from a range of symptoms — back pain as well as ear and throat infections. “Just all these things started happening,” she says. Then, in January 2009, she ended up in the hospital with extreme pain in her head, neck and abdomen. Marchand says she was given a battery of tests but doctors were unable to pinpoint the cause of her pain. Over the years, she endured a myriad of painful and debilitating symptoms, and visited numerous doctors, clinics and specialists. No one was able to tell her what was causing her symptoms. She says she was told the problem was all in her head, to go home and do yoga. “Eventually I consulted with a naturopath who diagnosed me with Lyme disease and additional coinfections,” she says. May is Lyme Awareness Month and Marchand is organizing a workshop to help bring awareness to the disease. “We need to be recog-

May Days parade to be one of biggest in years Over 70 entries in procession set for Sunday at noon If you plan to watch the annual Ladner May Days parade on Sunday, get comfortable — it’s going to be a big one. With more than 70 entrants, this will be one of the largest parades in recent history, says parade co-ordinator Karen Martinolich. “It’s a big year. Delta police are celebrating 125 years of service to the community and will have a significant contingent in the parade, and the Delta Fire Department is also heavily involved and hopes to have several vehicles on the route, including the chief’s truck, one of the fire engines and possibly the haz-mat unit.” Martinolich says the Tsawwassen First Nation is also participating and will have a unique presence in the event. Other participants include the Orphaned Wildlife Rehabilitation Society, a number of local businesses, churches, sporting groups and service clubs. There will also be a

parade route from 11:30 a.m. to 1:15 p.m., without exception. In addition, portions of those roads that are designated as marshaling areas will be closed starting at 10 a.m. Street parking will also be prohibited from 11:30 p.m. Saturday to 3 p.m. Sunday along 47th Avenue between Arthur Drive and Garry Street. Ladner’s Morgan Leung has been nominated for a national award honouring her work to make a difference in the community and abroad. Leung, 17, found out last weekend she is one of three youths from across the country shortlisted for the Me to We Award in the Free The Children Youth category. Each of the nominees will be featured on the Huffington Post Canada website, www.huffingtonpost.ca/p/metowe.html, where, starting today, Canadians will be invited to vote for the winner. The Me to We Awards aim to shine a spotlight on Canadians who are making a difference at home and

overseas. Leung, who is in Grade 11 at Southpointe Academy, has been active in the community from a young age. She is the top student fundraiser for the B.C. and Yukon Heart and Stroke Foundation, and since 2011 has been raising funds, mostly through selling handmade bracelets, to donate baby food to the South Delta Food Bank. She challenged herself to raise money and awareness for the local food bank after volunteering at a soup kitchen on Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside. For the past four years, she has volunteered five hours every Saturday as a teacher’s assistant at a ballet school. Earlier this year, as part of her independent studies class, she organized a

fundraising event featuring a presentation from Spencer West of Free The Children that raised $11,000 for the organization. Leung has attended the weeklong Free The Children leadership academy for the last two summers and this year she will be one of the youngest to be trained as a facilitator for the organization. Last October, Leung was a guest speaker at We Day in Vancouver where she spoke about her work raising money and awareness for the food bank in front of 20,000 people at Rogers Arena. Voting for the Me to We awards starts today and runs for a week. For more information, or to cast a vote, visit www.huffingtonpost.ca/p/ metowe.html.

MURPHY’S LAW Tomorrow’s grand opening of the refurbished Harris Barn marks a high point in the ongoing, and often unsuccessful, battle to preserve the heritage structures that dot Delta’s landscape. Civic officials deserve kudos for stepping up to the plate in a major way to preserve a piece of Delta’s agricultural history that dates all the way back to 1900. The restoration and relocation of the barn have turned something slated for demolition into a made-in-Delta community amenity that will be enjoyed by thousands in the years to come. Tomorrow’s opening is most certainly cause for celebration, and a great reason to throw a barn dance, but it also provides an opportunity to reflect on where we’re headed in terms of saving some of these magnificent structures from the wrecking ball. Mayor Lois Jackson has remarked, and rightly so, there’s only so much municipal hall (read taxpayers) can afford to do in terms of preserving heritage buildings, calling the current effort a special case. These types of projects are costly, prohibitively expensive in this instance, so to dip into the public purse on any type of regular basis is simply a non-starter. Jackson has also suggested a society or foundation be created in Delta to take the lead, which would lift the financial burden off taxpayers but still keep preservation efforts around here alive. That makes sense as the Harris Barn project taught us a couple of valuable lessons: saving heritage structures is a pricey proposition, but there’s actually a market for it if done properly. The fact the barn’s booking calendar is almost full before it even opens would suggest there’s an appetite for such a facility, so perhaps there’s room for additional heritage buildings to be turned into public amenities. However, it’s imperative there are identified uses for any buildings that are going to be saved so we don’t invest a bunch of time and money only to see them sit empty. It’s one thing to preserve heritage; it’s another to actually make use of what’s been restored. The prohibitive costs, and a ceiling on the number of banquet halls any one community could ever possibly need, will undoubtedly be factors in preservation efforts moving forward, but I suspect circumstances will converge to present another opportunity soon enough. In the meantime, we can look at the Harris Barn as a prime example of what can be accomplished when there’s a genuine willingness to save a piece of Delta’s past.

‘Doc’ enjoying retirement after long career caring for animals DOUG HUSBAND

COMMUNITY COMMENT Gordon Davis fondly recalls his arrival in Ladner on May 24, 1945. He had recently graduated from the veterinarian college in Guelph, Ontario. Delta was sorely in need of a large animal vet to service the 150 or so dairy herds as well as workhorses not yet replaced by tractors. Dr. Fred Ottewell, the local vet, had been suffering poor health for some time, so Davis was invited to set up his practice by the Ladner Farmers Institute. The date is well etched in Davis’ memory as it was on the same day he met the beautiful Genevieve Webb, whom he married just over a year later. When Davis arrived in Ladner he boarded with the Ottewell family while getting his practice organized and introduced to the farm community. His arrival was eagerly accepted. As a young lad I can recall walking with my father and uncle to view Davis’ new

home and clinic on Linden Drive near Ladner’s well-known “Five Corners.” “Doc Davis,” as he is fondly referred to, was raised in the Milner settlement in the Langley district. To appreciate the passage of time, his family purchased acreage as their home site from the Hudson’s Bay Company. After settling in, his father raised funds along with neighbours to assist in the building of a place of worship. This church has been preserved as a heritage building as is now the oldest of its kind in Langley. Davis’ father, a university graduate (rare for the time), encouraged him to attend UBC. From there he went to veterinarian college in Ontario. Davis boarded with family in Guelph while paying tuition fees of $60 per semester over three years to earn his degree. “Doc Davis” was soon busy at all hours of the day attending to the veterinary needs of the area. He was so busy, in fact, he had a reputation of tardiness in sending out his bill for services. He wryly admitted to this habit of being too busy to send out invoices. It was also fairly common practice to be paid in “kind” rather than cash. As a measure of change in Delta’s farm activity, Davis recalls 13 dairy herds on Westham Island

The Optimist encourages readers to write letters to the editor. Letters are accepted on any topic, although preference is given to those on local matters. alone and currently there are eight dairy farms in all of Delta. You could always tell who was a dairy farmer by the size of his hands and thick fingers from “stripping” the cows daily after removal of the milking machines. Back then the average milk cow produced 80 pounds of milk per day, whereas now with better breeding, a cow will produce 150 pounds of milk per day. In 1968 Davis hired Dr. Peter Cullis, a “local boy,” to assist in his practice and sold the “bovine” part of the business to Cullis in 1974. Davis retained the “equine” portion of his practice until his retirement in 1991. In later years the draft workhorse was phased out of farm activity and replaced by pleasure and racing stock. Davis related with wry humour that his retirement coincided with the introduction of the GST on Jan. 1, 1991. “No way was he going to collect tax for the federal government.” Today Gordon and Genevieve live not far from the family home and clinic. Doc Davis, long an integral part of the farm community, says he enjoys each day of his retirement swapping tales with contemporaries and attending social gatherings of old Ladner folk. And a goodnight to you, Genevieve.

May 24, 2013 The Delta Optimist A9 Letters to the Editor

Many died for right to vote Editor: Perhaps those who feel voting is a waste of time or that there are better things to do ought to be forced to visit the various gravesites that dot the world where Canadians fought and died for democracy. For starters, I would have these nincompoops visit Busan, South Korea and the UN gravesite — a beautiful place but for a horrible reason. These silly people who offer nothing more than lame excuses will be able to look at row upon row of perfectly kept gravestones that includes the Canadians

who fought and died in Korea along with the thousands of others from the other UN countries that went to the aid of South Korea when called upon. If Korea is not their bent, they can try the cemetery in Japan where several Canadian sailors lie along with others from UN Force countries. Or, if the Far East is not to their liking, then they can hop on over to Europe and walk among the thousands of crosses that cover acres of land to signify where Canadians and others are buried. Of course, all this travel

must be on their own dime so that a modicum of “punishment” might be meted out to them for their idiocy. As a veteran of the Korean War, I take exception to those who profess to be Canadians but spit on the graves of their countrymen [and women] who stepped forward and said, “Ready, Aye, Ready,” by not voting. I suppose these are the same ones who see little merit in attending a cenotaph on Remembrance Day or who claim that cenotaphs put out the wrong message. Bob Orrick

Several groups have rejected terrorism Editor: Re: Huge mosque to open on River Road, May 17 The Optimist provided an excellent overview of the history and opening of Baitur Rahman, or House of Gracious God, a new house of worship for the Canadian Ahmadiyya community. However where the article veers in its journalistic responsibility is in its unquestioning conveyance of the position that

the “Ahmadiyya also note they’re the leading Islamic organization to categorically reject terrorism in any form.” We applaud the Ahmadiyya community’s efforts while at the same time, respectfully, state that several leading organizations have regularly and historically rejected terrorism and violent extremism in any form since 9/11. This includes a national

statement coordinated by CAIR-CAN and signed by 120 imams in 2005 that resulted in a meeting with then-prime minister Paul Martin. This message was echoed by a similar statement in 2010 by the Canadian Council of Imams. Ihsaan Gardee Executive Director Canadian Council on American-Islamic Relations

Editor: Now that the Corporation of Delta has circulated the details of the public information meeting to be held on Thursday, May 30 from 3 to 8.30 p.m., it is timely to wonder if there will be an answer to the following question. When you look at the location map there is an area at the northwest corner that does not form part of the subject properties. This land is designated A1 agricultural in the Official Community Plan. Originally owned by the Guichon family, it was purchased by a company that specializes in apartment and high-density

development. Questions to municipal hall about the future of this land have been answered merely that there is no application for any development at this time. It is quite clear the existing owner is either intending to develop, or to sell the land on for development. The holding costs are known to be very high and must be an incentive to recoup an expensive investment. Should this land be the potential subject of an application for high-density development, which appears possible, the effect of this should be taken into

account when considering the adjacent application for the Southlands. As we know, well before any application was filed for the Southlands, there were many discussions, including a mayor’s summit, and a continual dialogue between planners and staff. I believe we should know if there has been any discussion between the owners and Delta staff at any level about the future of this land. We could be faced with another large addition to the current proposal to build 950 housing units on the Southlands. Peter Duffey

Make the time Decisions! We make them either consciously or unconsciously every moment of the day. Sometimes we are given advice, and many of our decisions are influenced by the society around us. Occasionally, our decisions are confined to financial constraints — like the Lamborghini sports car that I will never buy! One of the most difficult decisions we make, I think, is to allow God into our day. The morning routine and evening exhaustion often cloud our thinking and we move on to other important duties and chores. I have often thought that if I could move my prayer time to the duty roster of my day it might have a better chance of happening. But, I often relegate time to sit in prayer and meditation as a luxury that my busy

schedule cannot possibly include. This, however, often leads to further disconnect from God who lies at the centre of my every decision! It’s a vicious circle. One possible solution is to gather with others in prayer. I guess this sounds like a call to “come to church on Sundays” — and in a way it is — but it’s the daily decision that seems impossible. So, here’s an idea that has worked for me: There are daily “offices” of prayer and readings from scripture “online,” and there are booklets that suggest a reading and a short reflection. Even though the room may be empty or full, there is the knowledge that others are reading and praying with you on this very day. The decision is ours — and the results are life giving.

Citizenship Club collecting items for fundraiser BY

DAVE WILLIS

dwillis@delta-optimist.com

Students in Southpointe Academy’s Citizenship Club are looking to raise money for Canuck Place with a community parking lot sale next weekend. The club is collecting items from the school community and will be selling the donations at the Tsawwassen private school’s parking lot on Saturday, June 1. Students are hoping to have a book booth, a toys and games booth, a dollar store booth (for miscellaneous items), a clothing booth as well as a refreshment stand, said teacher Jenny Slinn. “They’re hoping we can

get as many people to come as possible and raise as much as they can,” she said. The club was making posters last week to help spread the word about the fundraiser. Cairo Malhi, a Grade 5 student, said he thought supporting Canuck Place was a good idea. “We can all relate to that because we’re kids,” he said. The club has previously collected Christmas presents for Deltassist, collected Halloween candy for the food bank and gathered wish list items for the SPCA. Canuck Place is a children’s hospice in Vancouver and is recognized as a leader in pediatric pallia-

A LITTLE BIT OF ITALY IN THE HEART OF TSAWWASSEN

In 2005 Tsawwassen benefited from the desire by Roland Smith to leave Umberto’s and open his own restaurant. Looking to work in the community in which he lived so he could spend more time with his family and have a place to call his own Roland opened a fine dining restaurant where a family could also feel comfortable. Illuminate Restorante was born and he has been serving the finest food, provided an extensive wine list and guarantees exceptional customer service. This combination has led to a loyal following not only from Tsawwassen residents but throughout the Lower Mainland. And the customers agree as he has won the Optimist’s Readers’ Choice Award for Fine Dining a number of times. “Tsawwassen is not the first place I would go if I was looking for an Italian dining experience. However, upon the recommendation of friends from Tsawwassen I decided to check it out. I was very pleased to find Roland, the owner and working Chef, came out of the Umberto fold opening. His elegant restaurant has an open atmosphere and nice décor. The menu had a good selection and, although they were out of the wine I wanted, the server’s suggested replacement was equally as good and regularly has a spot in my wine cellar. The server was attentive, polite, very professional and personable. The food was delicious and well presented. I’ll definitely be making more appearances at Illuminate. H. D., Richmond Other reviews from customers had many of the same comments: “Great food prepared well and served efficiently.” “It’s nice to have meat, seafood and vegetarian options on menu.” “The extensive wine list has something for everyone’s taste and features both BC and international wines.”

Attention Lower Mainland Home Owners: 23 of you are about to make an important financial decision...

“Frustrated Contractor ‘Giving Away’ $5136 Furnaces for $1181 with purchase of Off-Season Central Air ...”**

NO MONEY DOWN, NO PAYMENTS AND INTEREST FREE TIL 2014* (This is the Hottest AND Coolest Deal of the Century” ... especially if your furnace is over 8 years old)

Dear Friend I’m about to make you a deal that’s hard to refuse if you’ve got an “older” (and probably less than optimally efficient) furnace. I’ll replace your old furnace AND heat pump as a “package deal” for at least $3136.00 less than you would pay any other time of the year. Sound too good to be true? It’s not and here’s why. I’m making you what sounds like an unbelievable offer because it actually makes good sense for my business. And you come out a winner, as well! You see, I know from experience that in my slowest months I actually end up losing money ... then I have to spend the rest of the year trying to make up for it. Right now, I have no reason to believe 2013 will be any different. That’s why I’ve decided to give up trying to make a profit during these months and minimize my losses ... so I can come out ahead the rest of the year. So here’s how I can make the incredible offer at the top of this letter. Every year the biggie furnace manufacturers guesstimate how many furnaces to produce. Since there’s no way of knowing what the weather will be like and other factors that affect sales, these guys always have leftover inventory they have to hold onto until the next heating season. I saw a great business opportunity in this and went to one of these biggie companies (they won’t allow me to use their name in this letter) and contracted for the purchase of these furnaces that were going to just be sitting around. Plus, I bought 23 heat pumps all in the 3 most popular sizes used in Lower Mainland homes. Because of the number I bought and the time of year I purchased them, I got an unbelievable deal ... rock-bottom prices. Don’t get me wrong - these are brandnew, top quality, 2013 models. Not “seconds.” Not “blems.” Not builder-grade. These are premium furnaces and heat pumps fresh from a name-brand factory with a full factory warranty. How to Get Your Name Brand Furnace for Virtually Nothing By putting together this furnace-plusheat pump package (I call it the “Hottest AND Coolest Deal of the Century”), going through some heavy negotiations with the

manufacturer, and then committing to buying 23 systems outright, I got BOTH the furnace AND the heat pump at a price that would have made Sam Walton proud. This means when you buy one of these 23 new, premiumquality heat pumps I will “give” you the furnace and ask you to pay only the $1181 in labor it costs to install your furnace. Pick up your phone right now Simply call me at 946-1000 at anytime so I can come out and measure your home (to see if I’ve got the proper size unit). Remember ... I’ve got only 23 matched systems in 3 sizes so you’ll want to let me know VERY SOON that you’re interested. When these 23 systems are gone, they’re gone, and this offer is null and void. Call me right now so we can get the ball rolling! As part of the deal, I’ll show you how much the heat pump costs ... how much the furnace WOULD have cost ... and your savings when you buy your new heat pump and furnace as part of this special offer. The price I show you will include all installation materials and labor. There’s no fine print, nothing left out. Earlier I said that making you this amazing offer is also good business for me The way I look at it, by letting YOU win big now, I’ll win at the end of the year. And I won’t have to “make up” for the lost sales during my slowest months. I figure if I make you an absolutely irresistible offer .. if your furnace is pushing 8 years or more ... and if I barely mark up the price I paid, I’ll accomplish 2 major objectives that will allow me to reduce my losses the rest of the year. I’ll be able to ... • Pay my overhead (rent, utilities, insurance and taxes) during the slow period • Keep my service & installation technicians busy enough to pay them to work instead of sit at home. As you can see, when you take me up on my “Hottest AND Coolest Deal of the Century,” EVERYONE IS A WINNER! And by the way, there’s no obligation when you have me come out to measure your house and explain the installation If you decide you don’t want to take advantage of this incredible deal (although I can’t imagine why you wouldn’t want to save this kind of money), it’s no problem. You’re not obligated in any way. In fact, just for taking time to read this letter and having me out to survey your house ... I’ll give you a

Very Special Free Gift Coupon ($50 value). Why? Even if we don’t do business together now, I want you to remember us in the future. If you’re thinking a new furnace (& heat pump) isn’t in your budget - don’t worry! You don’t have to pay me right now Because I’ve tried to think of every reason possible why you WOULDN’T take me up on this spectacular offer, I’ve even made arrangements for a super bank rate financing plan. And I’m not “marking up” the interest rate like so many other companies do. While I can’t promise you this, it’s possible that with this financing plan your monthly investments in a new system could be more than paid for by the savings you see on your monthly utility bills. My Disappointment-Proof Guarantee Talking about lower utility bills, I’m so sure you’ll see at least a 25% cut in your heating and cooling bills (in reality, it may be more like 35%+), if you don’t I’ll pay you twice the difference for 2 years. Not only are you getting a new, firstquality furnace virtually free, plus a firstquality heat pump at a great price, I guarantee you’ll lower your heating and cooling bills by at least 25% or I’ll pay you double your savings for 2 years. (This alone should convince you that these systems are some of the very best quality and most efficient available). But you’ve got to act fast ... call me at 946-1000 right now! This offer ends May 15th no matter what Don’t wait to call me. Here’s why. I have only 8 of each of the 3 sizes. When all of the air conditioners are sold and all the furnaces “given away” in a certain size, the “Hottest AND Coolest Deal of the Century” is over. And if I still have any of the 23 systems left on May 31st, this offer still ends. The reason is that my business only slows down for a short time. Since these furnaces cost me so little, if I’ve got any left, I’ll sell them next winter at last year’s prices and still come out ahead. So call me right now at 946-1000 Thanking you in advance, Scott Campbell Owner P.S. Remember, there’s no obligation and even if you change your mind once I measure your house and give you the estimate - you still get that Free Gift Coupon worth $50.

Poet makes his selections Tim Bowling confident his best work is included in newest release

t was an interesting process, as well as a difficult one, for Tim Bowling to decide which poems made it into his latest release. Selected Poems contains work from Bowling’s award-winning poetry career. “I feel pretty confident the best poems that I’ve written are in there,” he says, although he admits there are bound to people who don’t find their favourites in the new release. He says his 10 full collections probably have close to 400 poems, while Selected Poems contains just 70. Bowling, who grew up in Ladner and now lives in Edmonton, says he feels much of his strongest work deals with subjects like the

West Coast and the fishing industry. “Also tonally, I think my most effective work is often somewhat melancholic or elegiac in nature,” he says. “I’ve written some lighthearted and humorous things over the years, [but] just for the sake of having a tonal unity I didn’t include a lot of the more lighthearted pieces.” He adds that for Selected Poems he tried “to pick the mood and a subject that’s maybe closest to what I do.” Asked if he’s seen his style or voice change over the course of his career, Bowling says he has. His more recent work is a little harder edged, he says. “The poems in the last 15 years are darker, I think. There’s a little bit more of a weight of history to them.” He notes one of the other challenges of the book was a desire to represent “your-

self as what you were. “It would be easy for me to look back on my early books and say, ‘I’ll take a couple from each of those, because I think I’m a much stronger poet now.’ But that wouldn’t be a fair representation of the entire arc of my writing career.” “Always a poet of intense emotion and surprising metaphor whose lyric-narrative voice ranges in Tim Bowling says his more tone from romantic to recent work has a harder humorous to coldly edge to it. tragic and unrelievrecognized by groups like edly dark, Bowling’s integrity has never wavered, the Canada Council for the Arts, the Bridport Prize nor has his commitment to Foundation in England celebrating poetic tradition and the John Simon and the land and waterGuggenheim Memorial scapes of his cherished West Coast,” a press release Foundation in the U.S. Selected Poems retails for reads. His poetry work has been $22.95.

A few weeks ago a harassed gardener asked me if there are any maintenance-free plants. Apparently weeds was not the answer she was seeking. Anyone who wants a non-weed garden will be faced with maintenance at some stage. Some plants, however, are certainly less needy than others — and choosing those can easily reduce maintenance. For instance, gardeners who focus on native plants as habitat and a food supply for wildlife can enjoy a much more relaxed type of garden. Many native plants, such as salmon berries, thimbleberries, Indian Plum and salal, have beautiful flowers and nutritious berries, but they’re only maintenancefree for a while. Later, because they’re so well adapted to our soil and climate, they cover more and more space as roots expand and seeds find good spots to sprout. At some point the gardener must pick up a spade and establish firm boundaries for paths, driveway and other valued areas. This can become a yearly task.

Native ferns are much closer to being truly maintenance-free. One of the easiest is the native Sword Fern. It’s an evergreen that does best in a moist, shady situation and the old fronds form a thick, mulching carpet that surrounds the plant and suppresses weeds. Ground-covers are generally thought to be maintenance-free also, but in the early stages diligent weeding is essential. It’s not difficult to end up with weeds that a ground-cover will actually hide until they’re difficult to uproot. As well all ground-covers are invasive to some degree. The more invasive they are, the more successfully they cover ground. That’s why groundcovers such as Vinca minor and Vinca major, Summer Snow and Yellow Archangel can turn into unstoppable monsters in mild climates. Many are on invasive plant lists. With these and others, sooner or later gardeners must resort to stopping a ground-cover’s headlong rush for more living room. It’s worth noting a few ground-covers such as Kenilworth Ivy and some lamiums can also climb. Some sprawling shrubby ground-covers such as Cotoneaster dammeri and junipers can grow into a dense cover where weeds won’t germinate. But there is still the initial weeding as one gets them established.

In this West Coast climate, rhododendrons demand less attention than most other plants. But it’s important to know that no matter how small a rhododendron seems in the garden centre, many are destined to become big shrubs and some become trees. A crucial point is planting them where they have room to expand. A spot under windows or close to doors will lead to major pruning as the rhododendron matures. It’s the smaller rhododendrons that fit best into city lot-size gardens. This includes purplish-pinkflowered PJM rhododendrons and the pink or whiteflowered Rhodo yakusimanum and its hybrids. There are also some ornamental trees that get by with little or no pruning or care once they’re safely planted. One is Mountain Ash, which has beautiful red or orange (rarely yellow) berries that are a feast for birds in the fall. Crataegus species can also be left to grow in their own way. These various kinds of Hawthorn produce flowers that are usually white or pink (sometimes double). Fruits may be red, orange, yellow or black depending on the species. Author releases her latest how-to book My Parents Learn Windows 8 is the latest addition to Tsawwassen author Louise Latremouille’s series of computer guidebooks. “My books are more like a how-to conversation than an instruction manual,” she says. “They are meant to be used, dog-eared and hopefully give you a little fun while you’re learning.” The new beginners guidebook, described as easy to read with straight to the point directions, covers Windows 8, the new version of the Microsoft Windows operating system. The release marks the eighth book in Latremouille’s series. She got started writing guidebooks by putting together how-to notes for her parents after they received a hand-me-down PC in the early 2000s, organizing the notes into a book and printing 20 copies for family and friends. Latremouille, who lost her father to cancer in 2003, donates a portion of the profits from her book sales to cancer research and patient care. She’s raised close to $38,000 so far. Latremouille also recently released My Parents Got An iPad. For more information, or to order online, visit myparentsfirst.com.

Tsa. Legion hosting First Nations art show The Tsawwassen Legion will be hosting a First Nations art show next weekend. There will be crystal etching, paintings, traditional pen and ink works, and silversmith work at the exhibit, explains Kathleen Dixon, a Tsawwassen Legion executive member. She says artists have been asked to create at least one piece depicting a First Nations veteran along with a poppy, the Legion’s emblem. “When people think of the Royal Canadian Legion, they think of the poppy,” she says. Dixon says students from a Comox school in an aborigi-

your family car with 3/16” aluminum sheeting and fit it with a turbocharger the size of a labradoodle. They build and operate Subaru Canada’s rally cars as well. Rally racing and Subarus are as closely woven together as the Gore-Tex fibres that make up the clothes of the people who buy them. If you’re not aware, rally-racing is to normal road-racing what downhill mountain biking is to the GranFondo: big knobbly tires, lots of mud, plenty of spectacular crashing. In fact, the very name of the high-performance versions of the Subaru Impreza is taken from the World Rally Championship: WRC becomes WRX. These roadgoing rally cars have been Canadian favourites for over a decade, but they’ve actually been around for even longer than that. Subaru was already rallying their Legacy mid-sized car in the early 1990s, and having some success in doing so. However, when the new Impreza came out in the early ‘90s, the smaller car was a better fit for the tight, winding rally stages. We got the Impreza as a four-door sedan, two-door coupe or sport wagon. Japanese buyers got the option of a turbo-charged four-door rocket with 237 horsepower and all-wheeldrive. Released in 1992, it was a smash hit. Speaking of smash hits, the international appeal of the WRX in the 1990s was very different, country to country. In the UK, younger buyers went nuts for the accessible performance and tuning potential of the car: it was a real B-road terror. In Australia, also well

suited to all-wheel-drive cars, the “smash hit” thing got taken quite literally. As WRXs were always available in wagon form (some early models were officially dubbed the wonderful “Subaru Gravel Express”), they made great getaway cars. Easy to steal, without passive immobilizers, a WRX wagon was tough enough to smash through a storefront and spacious enough to fill it full of illgotten Australian goods, like boomerangs and jumbuks and those little hats with corks on them, or what-have-you. Then it was off to play Waltzing Matilda with the coppers, who simply couldn’t keep up. Meantime, something called the STi was built. These were special versions of the standard WRX even more like the rally-racing cars that were stacking up victories with drivers like Colin McRae at the wheel. Subaru Technica International (STI) has an official colour that’s a bit odd for such a barrel-chested racer: cherry-blossom pink. Still, with power now in the 250hp and up range, the STi versions were nothing to be laughed at. In the latter half of the ’90s, special-edition cars became all the rage, and here’s a rule-of-thumb if you happen to be looking at one of these right-handdrive JDM imports on our streets today: the more letters after the name, the better. Therefore, a WRX is good, a WRX STI is better, and a WRX STI Spec-C RA-R is just about the best thing in the universe. See SUBARU page 26

SUBARU from page 24

The Delta Optimist is looking for carriers in all areas.

With three rally titles under their belts, Subaru built probably the best WRX of them all: the 22B. You might never see one of these in-person as it’s so rare, but it’s as close to the rally-cars as Subaru ever made anything, with huge fender flares and enormous foglight housings. It’s also a very pretty car, in a muscular way, and we all know how rare it is for Subaru to actually make a good-looking car. Then, in 2002, Subaru finally brought the WRX to America, and by extension, Canada. The cars were based on the new Impreza with its odd round-headlight front-end (enthusiasts like me refer to them as “Bugeyes”), but it sold very strongly, with high dealer demand. Moreover, and unlike some of its more expensive German competition, the WRXs continue to hold their value very strongly today as they’re mechanically quite tough. Of course, there are some issues, as with any car. With

Junior “A” lacrosse team snaps three game losing streak with lopsided win over Burnaby Lakers BY

The last place Burnaby Lakers provided some much needed relief to the Delta Islanders before they jump back into the teeth of their schedule. The B.C. Junior “A” Lacrosse League club snapped a three game losing streak by thumping the Lakers 16-2 last Sunday. The skid should have ended 24 hours earlier as Delta blew a 7-4 third period lead in a 12-9 home floor defeat to the New West Salmonbellies. After flying out of the gate with four straight victories, the Islanders showed their youth over a seven day stretch with losses to three of the teams they are expected to be contending with all season. Following an 11-9 setback at Victoria, the locals fell 7-5 to the defending champion Coquitlam Adanacs. They were well on their way to a second win over the Salmonbellies this season until the third period collapse. The visitors opened the frame with three straight to tie the game, only to see Delta jump back in front on goals by Cody Nass and Jon Phillips. New West responded again and took advantage of a rattled back end to explode for five goals in a 4:50 span to close out the game. “We’re a young team and we’re going to have to learn from it,” said Islanders coach Shaun Springett who had six intermediate age players in his line-up. We need to step up and make plays in those situations.” Springett sure could have used Cody Hawkins to help stem the tide. The graduated captain not only was a terrific defensive player, he was a vocal leader on the floor who elevated his play and leadership in tight games. His role might be filled by third-year standout Dan McDermott who made his box season debut after an All-American season at the New York Institute of Technology. “We’re hoping Danny can be that

vocal guy,” said Springett. “I think we have done a good job replacing the skilled players we lost from last year but the leadership is going to take some time.” The Islanders have another tough 48 hour stretch starting tonight when they visit the Port Coquitlam Saints, before the Adanacs come to Ladner on Saturday night (7:30 p.m.) If the Islanders are going post a rare regular season win of Coquitlam, they must be much better in transition than the previous meeting. The Adanacs burned Delta for four goals

off face-offs and another on a quick line change. Boxla bits… Saturday is “Fight Night” at the Ladner Leisure Centre but not of the combat variety. The Canadian Cancer Society (CCS) will be on hand to accept a $19,000 cheque from Delta Lacrosse thanks to another very successful Lax-4-Life fundraiser event. The Islanders will be doing their part in the fight against cancer by donating $1 of every ticket sold to the CCS.

ROBERT HODGINS

Special to the Optimist

Imagine sprinting as hard as you possibly can, with all systems failing for 2000 meters. Now imagine doing that while lifting weights with both your arms. Power, speed, exhaustion, exhilaration and hard work – all describe what the junior athletes from the Delta Deas Rowing Club experienced last weekend at the prestigious 53rd Annual Shawnigan Lake School Regatta. Racing against some of the top crews in

Western Canada, the DDRC Junior B men (Jack Knoedler, Daniel Kruckenberg, Ben Morton, Eric Valestuk) and the Junior B women (Eve Grébert, Nicola Simpson, Jenna Smith, Natalie Whitehead) each finished fifth in their finals. Junior B rowers Nicola Simpson and Eve Grébert were first and fourth respectively in the “B” final. Delta’s elite crew of Amanda Serek and Hilary Schaap, placed second in their double A final, while Robert Hodgins, a Junior B, placed second in his single A Final. The Junior A JV women (Rosemarie Nederend and Kendra Pedersen)

took fifth in their double final. Most notable, and one of B.C.’s top U19 rowers, is Schaap, who earned a strong, first place finish in the women’s single A final. Back home now with these impressive results, there is little rest for the DDRC juniors. They continue to train hard as they prepare for their own big weekend — the 24th Annual Delta Deas Scholastic Regatta. The event will take place on Saturday and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Deas Island Regional Park, located at 62B Street and River Road.

FOSTER, Julia Nancy

December 14, 1989 - May 23, 2012

Orla was born on a farm near Hazlet, Saskatchewan to Oscar and Olga Sannes. She had 4 siblings, Alice, Arnold, Ruby, and Raymond. She is survived only by her dear sister Alice Smith of Swift Current, Saskatchewan. Orla moved to Edmonton, Alberta in 1943. She was employed as a mail order clerk at the Woodwards Department Store for 16 years. One of the highlights in Orla’s early life was sailing across the Atlantic with her best friend, Anne to visit relatives in Norway and travel in Europe in 1956, a time when very few women travelled on their own. In 1958, she married Svend Tychsen and shortly thereafter they had 2 children, Randi and Ronald. Orla was a devoted mother and wife as well as an excellent cook and baker. She hosted many get-togethers with family, friends and neighbours throughout her life. She was an active member of both the Lutheran Church and the Sons of Norway. Collecting and selling antiques was one of Orla’s great passions and she often found hidden treasures at garage sales and flea markets. Later when the kids grew up, she and Svend started travelling more extensively. In 2004, they took their children and grandchildren on a memorable cruise to Alaska. In 2005, Orla and Svend moved to Tsawwassen, B.C. to be closer to their children Randi (Dan), Ronald (Karen) and their grandchildren Dylan, Eva, Alexandra and Tess. Orla loved her family dearly. Her kindness, compassion and generosity were felt by all who knew her. Orla’s faith kept her strong to the very end. She passed away peacefully with both her children at her side. She was predeceased by her loving husband, Svend. Thank you to all the staff at KinVillage for their kindness and care over the past six years. May you rest in peace, Mom with Dad at your side. A Memorial Service will be held at Benediction Lutheran Church, 5575 Sixth Avenue in Tsawwassen, BC on Sunday, May 26, 2013 at 1:30 pm. A reception will follow.

1.

The purpose of this application is to request authorization to discharge air contaminants from the operation of two natural gas-fired stationary engines used to provide heat, carbon dioxide (CO2), and electrical energy to a vegetable greenhouse facility. The primary air contaminant generated from the combustion of natural gas is oxides of nitrogen (NOx). Other products of natural gas combustion include Carbon Monoxide, Particulate Matter (PM), and Total Hydrocarbons (THC). The engine exhaust gases are treated with selective catalytic reduction (SCR) which is considered amongst the best available control technologies for NOx control. Ammonia is a by-product from the SCR controls. A study to predict the potential ambient air quality effects of the requested NOx emissions from the engines confirms that the maximum predicted 1-hour, 24-hour and annual average ambient NOx concentrations (as NO2), including background, will achieve their respective Metro Vancouver ambient air quality objectives. Additional information for the energy project is available at the Houweling s Nurseries website: http://www.houwelings.com/proposed_energy_project/
