Cause of sinkhole isn’t known Arthur Drive reduced to one lane for hours BY

JESSICA KERR

jkerr@delta-optimist.com

Traffic on Arthur Drive was reduced to one lane for a good portion of the day Wednesday as municipal crews worked to repair a sinkhole. The sinkhole, which was about two feet wide and six feet deep, appeared in the northbound lane of Arthur Drive at 34B Avenue early Wednesday morning. Delta engineering director Steven Lan said he was notified of the hole at around 7:30 a.m. Initial reports said the road was

closed, however, early on traffic was kept moving in the single southbound lane. Lan said the exact cause of the sinkhole could not be determined. He said there were no leaks from nearby culverts or water mains and it is believed the sinkhole just developed over a long period of time, possibly due to the settlement of backfill and the migration of materials from water main construction in the 1990s. Lan said there was no obvious cause for the hole. Both lanes were open later in the afternoon.

Trucks targeted in annual blitz

Delta police once again call on outside agencies to help inspect commercial vehicles in three-day campaign BY

JESSICA KERR

jkerr@delta-optimist.com

The Delta Police Department was joined by several other agencies again this week for its annual truck inspection blitz. Inspection teams were at several locations around Delta Tuesday through Thursday checking out commercial vehicles. The blitz aims to inspect as many commercial vehicles as possible with a focus on those that might not be properly maintained and could ultimately pose a danger on the road. Officers from Delta’s traffic section, working in partnership with the provincial Commercial Vehicle Safety and Enforcement Branch (CVSE), were joined by officers and civilians from a number of different agencies, including Delta’s own vehicle inspection unit, the Integrated Road Safety Unit, RCMP, Surrey bylaw enforcement, Vancouver and New Westminster police departments, and WorkSafe BC. In all, 75 participants

put through a preliminary visual inspection and any that looked like they could have problems were put through a more thorough

inspection. The inspectors checked a truck’s mechanical components — brakes, tires, lights, steering, load

security — as well as the driver’s qualifications, looking for proper licensing and fatigue. After inspection, trucks

were given either a pass, violation present or out of service designation. Any vehicle with an out of service designation was not allowed to proceed before the problem was fixed. The department had a number of mechanics, tire companies and tow trucks on standby to help fix any issues to get trucks back on the road. “One of the strategic goals of the Delta Police Department is to make Delta’s roads the safest in B.C., and with this initiative and partnership the goal will be one step closer,” the department stated in a new release. “Delta has one of the highest, if not the highest, ratio in B.C. of commercial trucks transiting its roads on a daily basis... the focus of the blitz [is] on business vehicles that may not be properly maintained and could ultimately pose a danger on our roads.” This is the seventh year for the initiative. Details on the number of vehicles checked were not available by press time.

MLA concerned wheelchair fee is just the beginning

Vicki Huntington says new residents in long-term care facilities face more than just monthly maintenance fee BY

SANDOR GYARMATI

sgyarmati@delta-optimist.com

Delta South MLA Vicki Huntington is warning of more financial hardship for seniors as she continues to give Fraser Health grief over a new wheelchair fee. Huntington made public earlier this month Fraser Health’s plan for a $25 monthly “maintenance” charge for wheelchairbound residents at the Mountain View Manor long-term care facility at Delta Hospital, a fee which starts this September. The Fraser Health Authority cites a policy change a couple of years ago by the Ministry of Health that gives health

authorities the option to start charging for wheelchairs and other items at care facilities, a move that created a public backlash. Huntington said this week the wheelchair user fee might be just the beginning of a new financial burden on wheelchair-bound seniors. “Sources from Fraser Health have told me that the $25 monthly fee will only be offered to current long-term care residents. Come Sept. 1, unless a new resident can show financial hardship to Fraser Health’s satisfaction, all new residents have to buy or rent their wheelchair from a private vendor,” Huntington said.

“Our most frail seniors, who are most in need of care, will be forced to pay up to $100 per month for what has suddenly become the very expensive privilege of remaining mobile during their last years. “It is utterly outrageous,” said Huntington. “It can cost $4,000 and more to purchase a wheelchair, and the rental could be upwards of $1,200 a PHOTO BY SANDOR GYARMATI year. After Sept. 1, half of Seniors will soon be paying more a resident’s comfort fund for wheelchairs. could be consumed by the wheelchair rental alone, Health advised her the inileaving a disposable income tial $25 monthly fee was to of only $100 for every cover the cost of maintainpersonal need, including ing the chairs of current clothes, haircuts, foot care, residents. However, funds many drugs and toiletries.” would not be returned to Huntington said Fraser the patient if maintenance

was not required. Instead, the fee goes into general revenue and is not linked to a patient’s account. In a statement this week, Fraser Health spokesperson Tasleem Juma noted a letter to clients, sent May 31 by the health authority, stated that people needing wheelchairs would need to purchase or rent their own wheelchair through a third party. If a hardship waiver showed they could not afford to rent or purchase their own wheelchair, they would be offered a health authority chair and charged the monthly maintenance fee. “To be clear, all clients in Fraser Health facilities will be offered all three

options when they are assessed needing a wheelchair: either to purchase their own chair; rent from a third party provider; or borrow a wheelchair from the health authority and pay a $25 monthly maintenance fee. Clients who through the hardship waiver process cannot afford any of these options will receive a health authority wheelchair without a monthly charge,” the statement read. “The hope has always been that individuals who can afford to buy or rent a wheelchair would do so, but the policy continues to be in place to provide one to seniors who require it, regardless of financial ability.”

Schools can’t be reduced to number District officials point out positives as Fraser Institute rankings have only two Delta high schools in top 100

“This is but one example of the exceptional teaching and learning that is occurring in our secondary schools. Such excellence is not reflected in the Fraser Institute rankings.”

Superintendent Dianne Turner

The report also notes that 26 schools across B.C. showed significant academic improvement over the last five years, including a number of public schools, none of which are in Delta. “Principals and teachers who have not yet found ways to improve their academic results might profit from talking to the staff at these schools,” said Peter Cowley, the report’s author. Teachers and district officials have long been critical of the Fraser Institute’s rankings. Asked for the district’s

she said, they are based, overall, on limited test results. “We do not rank our schools and we measure our successes in a myriad of ways that do not involve standardized test results,” she told the Optimist Monday. “In the Delta school district our vision is to be a leading district for innovative teaching and learner success. All of our seven secondary schools have dedicated and talented staff who are making our vision come alive each and every

day; they work diligently to ensure our students are enabled to reach their full potential. At this time of year, we see their efforts come to fruition.” Turner said the district has an inquiry coordinator to work with all 31 schools to determine strengths and define areas of improvement. “While the inquiry process looks different in every school, it is incredible to see all of the schools engaging their staff and students, and creating learning environments that embrace innovative teaching and foster individual learner success,” she said. “At South Delta Secondary School, for example, teachers have created the Strive program. Strive is a cross-curricular course for Grade 10 students where they will study English, math, physical education and science by exploring the natural settings of South Delta. The cross-curricular connections will emphasize holistic activities, which will involve frequent opportuni-

ties to explore ideas and curriculum in our local surroundings. “This is but one example of the exceptional teaching and learning that is occurring in our secondary schools. Such excellence is not reflected in the Fraser Institute rankings,” Turner said. According to Delta school board chair Laura Dixon, the district has consistently high graduation rates, which exceed the provincial rates for all students, including aboriginal and

special needs students. “We are on an exciting path in Delta,” Dixon said. “Through inquiry, our teachers are exploring the needs of their students and crafting instruction to support these needs. We are seeing incredible successes from both students and teachers. “Our students are becoming well-rounded global citizens, ready to contribute their personal best as the leaders of tomorrow. This is how we measure success in our schools.”

Only two Delta public schools managed to crack the top 100 in the Fraser Institute’s latest controversial rankings of high schools, but district officials are quick to point out the annual list doesn’t tell the real story. The institute this week released The Report Card on British Columbia’s Secondary Schools 2013, which ranks 284 public and independent schools using a number of indicators, including data from annual province-wide exams as well as graduation and grade-to-grade transition rates. According to the latest ranking, Delta Secondary in Ladner and Seaquam Secondary in North Delta tied for 98th overall. Next on the list of public schools in Delta were South Delta (107th), Burnsview (133rd), Sands (155th), Delview (197th) and North Delta (245th). Southpointe Academy in Tsawwasen, a private

school, once again was the highest rated high school in Delta, placing 11th in the province. As usual, private schools dominated the rankings, taking 18 of the top 20 spots.

TED MURPHY

MURPHY’S LAW After much consultation and consternation, a proposal for the final phase of Marina Garden Estates will go before the public at a hearing next Tuesday evening. The application, which would more than double the number of housing units in the Ladner subdivision, is likely to get a rough ride as those living in the adjacent single-family homes and highend townhouses have repeatedly voiced concerns over everything from the look and density of the housing to the traffic it would create. There’s little doubt that what’s on the table now is a marked departure from the existing neighbourhood, which is undisputedly one of the nicest in Ladner. If we were starting from scratch, it would be difficult to see this application proceeding, given the difference in density and the resident opposition. But we’re not at square one, not by any stretch of the imagination. Although the final phase is earmarked for a vacant parcel of land, the entire development got approval years ago and that original plan called for a much more dense waterfront phase than the remainder of the site. The intent was always to have hundreds of townhouses close to the marina, but over the years, as only single-family homes (and later the high-end townhouses) were built, the subdivision took on a certain feel. As a result, the final phase doesn’t seem to be in keeping, even though it was in the plans all along. Granted, the current proposal calls for more units than what had been originally approved for the most northern portion of the site, but with the 220-room hotel now removed from the plans, the numbers aren’t substantially different. My guess is even if the developer got down to the previously approved figure, there would still be concerns over form, density and more. The crux of the matter is that more than half of the housing units are scheduled to be built on less than one-quarter of the overall footprint of the development, resulting in a significantly denser final phase. In hindsight, it would have made more sense to build from the water outwards, constructing the higher density first. People living in condos and townhouses tend not to get too excited if single-family is built next door, but the same can’t be said if it’s done the other way around. It would also mean the constant construction traffic wouldn’t have to travel through existing neighbourhoods to get to the job site. That ship, however, has long sailed.

The only certainty life offers is more change lies ahead TOM SIBA PUBLISHER’S PERSPECTIVE This column was due to run this past Wednesday, June 19th, my 65th birthday. I think it is somewhat fitting that I totally forgot about it and our editor saved my butt by having another column available from someone who doesn’t tend to procrastinate as much as I. I thought it was somewhat symbolic to forget the column as an entry to what is generally termed seniors’ status. A symbolic senior’s moment, if you will. Little did I realize that life had bigger plans to mark the transition. Just after midnight of my 65th year, I had my second GTA. GTA stands for global transient amnesia. It is the loss of short-term memory, which lasts for an hour or two and occurs mostly to those over 50 — and no, it wasn’t alcohol induced. I am sure societies as a whole are subject to something similar every few years.

GTA unfortunately looks like a potential stroke. So off in the ambulance to emergency we went. Since I had a bout of GTA in the GTA (Greater Toronto Area, which also looks like it might have a stroke) a few years back, I wasn’t overly concerned as none of the other symptoms of a stroke were present. Although it is not a great way to spend a night, it was reassuring to see the great work the staff at Delta Hospital, and in the ambulance service, perform. I was finely released at 4 a.m. and spent most of my birthday in a fog. (Nothing unusual there!) So life moves on and not all the changes are appreciated. But there are trade-offs of the good with the bad and we live with and adapt to the changes. Similarly, communities change and some of the changes are good and others not so much. Once again change is a bogie man for Delta. There are currently several development proposals working their way through the process that are attracting much debate and criticism. There is the MK Lands development adjacent to Burns Bog, the revised proposal for Marina Garden Estates and, of course, that trusty old standby, the

Southlands. These are all overshadowed by the potential development on the Tsawwassen First Nation lands. Earlier this week I headed out Highway 10 bound for an all-day meeting in Abbotsford. I use to travel this route frequently in years past when I had responsibility for group newspapers in Chilliwack and Abbotsford. However, for the last dozen years I have rarely ventured in that direction. Heading east though Delta on Highway 10 was through a very familiar landscape — essentially unchanged in the last dozen years. However, once you get into Surrey, the route is unrecognizable. The road is now four lanes and well paved. In Delta, there was still a heavily patched two-lane road. The change is even more dramatic as you get near to Cloverdale. There has been an explosion of population and commercial activity in the area. So is all this growth a good thing or a bad thing? Probably a bit of both. Delta is going to change. We have avoided much of the population pressures on the Lower Mainland. Our population is going to grow and those living here now will have to adapt and help ensure the good points surpass the bad.

Letters to the Editor

Plan doesn’t work with gem of neighbourhood

Editor: I would like to voice my opposition to the Marina Gardens proposal as submitted. My opposition is based on four basic concerns: density, traffic and parking, public open spaces, and building form and character. • Density: The developer’s rational to increase the maximum allowable density from 42 units/Ha to 45.2 units/Ha is flawed and morally wrong. In previous Marina Garden Estates development phases, conscious business decisions were made to reduce densities. Now they are attempting to transfer unused densities to average out to maximum allowable densities for the overall neighbourhood. Now is not the time to make-up for previous business choices to increase profits. • Traffic and parking: Traffic increases cannot be avoided with any type of development, but I feel the existing traffic study is flawed and traffic volumes

have been significantly underestimated. With only two ways in/out of Marina Garden Estates, upgrading of Ferry Road/River Road must be undertaken, including signalization. The proposed narrow townhouses with tandem parking will only compound on-site parking issues, especially without significant setbacks allowing enough depth for parking on driveway aprons. • Public open spaces: A development geared to a ranging demographic, from young families to retirees, requires public passive areas. Small (strata controlled) parks and/or playground areas within townhouse pockets will not meet the requirements of the wide range of ages targeted. • Building form and character: The proposed townhouse portion of the development, 388 with tandem parking and 192 with side-by-side parking, is totally out of character with the existing neighbour-

hood, which ironically was established by the same developer. The four-storey apartment building is totally out of character and would be better suited in the Ladner town core. I am not anti-development, but pro-smart development, which I do not feel this application is. When I moved to this neighbourhood from North Delta seven years ago, I was well aware of the future buildout, but I truly expected future development to complement the existing neighbourhood, which this proposal does not. This proposal does have some merit and can be saved if the developer re-considered this application and worked with the neighbourhood. The Marina Garden Estates neighbourhood is truly a gem of not only Delta, but of the Lower Mainland, and I hope Delta council will do everything in its power to ensure it remains so. Jack Smythe

Quality development will benefit all Ladnerites Editor: There was a huge turnout to a so-called “emergency meeting” in Marina Gardens Estates on Monday. The school gym was full. What a great opportunity to have a debate of sorts, a back and forth between the naysayers and the developer. It was a chance for people to ask questions and get answers from either or both sides. But no, the rules were to hold questions to the end and listen to Ron Ogilvy’s biased presentation. That’s right, he even said he was biased but would “try” to present just the facts. He went on to critique the facts, which ironically have evolved because of

their own relentless opposition. Since the January plan, the developer has eliminated three of the four condo buildings and added a lot more townhomes, which will be three-storey walk-ups. I am saddened by this change as it doesn’t serve downsizing seniors, empty nesters or young people starting out. Traffic was another big complaint. Apparently it will increase by about 50 per cent over the 10-year construction period. That, to me, is reasonable and so gradual it will hardly be noticeable. They say only six per cent of the homes are accessible for people with mobility issues. That’s because

the condos are virtually eliminated, thanks to all this opposition. The elephant in the room were the Polygon reps, who were not invited to participate until later when they were allowed to confirm a few numbers. What a missed opportunity this was for a “real” information meeting. The sky is not falling, even though Stan Lawson and his followers would like you to believe that. Please, let’s not go any farther backwards on this plan than we already have. It’s a quality development that needs to go ahead. It will benefit all Ladnerites, not just those who live there. ML Burke

Politicians don’t need to bargain to get raise Editor: Re: Running short is now OK, Murphy’s Law, June 14 Your article flowed until the last few words of the very last sentence, namely: “...but didn’t they just hinder their own bargaining position in the process?” There is no bargaining process. When council members feel they are

entitled to a raise, they vote themselves one. When there is negative feedback, they merely circle the wagons and justify their action with one or all of these three responses: Firstly, the council in a nearby locale makes more than we do (but has less work and has fewer responsibilities), so we need pay

equity. Secondly, we need to pay top dollar to attract talented people, so we need to raise the pay levels. And last but not least, if you don’t like what I’m doing, you can vote me off council at the next election. Is it any wonder my cynicism of all things political continues to grow. Robert W. Craig

Letters to the Editor

Silent group must speak up on Southlands Editor: I’ve been a resident of South Delta for over 25 years, having moved to Tsawwassen from Vancouver in the late 1980s during the lengthy public hearings over the Spetifore (farm) land, now known as the Southlands. As a newcomer to the area, I listened with interest but had no specific opinion about the situation. I now live in Ladner and recently visited the Southlands display cottage and attended the public information session. I applaud Sean Hodgins and

the Century Group for their diligent work in altering the project after listening to the many concerns by residents in the community. While I respect those with opposing views, I support this project. I encourage others like myself who are not opposed to the development but have been non-committal, to let Delta council know they support the application. I believe there is a large, silent group that could make it clear to council that an opposition group stating it has “the facts” does not represent the majority

come see our newly designed BARBER shop

The Matador

of residents. We should not miss the opportunity for input believing that the outcome is already determined. Options to remain in the community as we age depend on this decision. It appears Hodgins has not only inherited his father’s keen business sense but also the ability to foresee the needs of not just a select few residents but the many who share a desire to live in a healthy, thriving community. I hope Hodgins’ respectful and inclusive business approach serves him well. Joyce Schmidt

More concerns brushed aside

Editor: Delta’s planning department has collected thousands of pieces or correspondence from people concerned about plans to turn the Southlands farmland into a construction zone. All but lost amongst that pile of letters is a very interesting one recently submitted by the provincial Ministry of Agriculture. The letter points out some major flaws in Century Group’s Community Based Farm District proposal, flaws that municipal hall

WIN a

has just brushed aside, or failed to assess, adding to an already very large mound under Delta council’s proverbial carpet. For example, the letter contests the very viability of small-scale, organic agriculture and the proposed revenue figures Century has given. Century based its assumptions on a Ministry of Agriculture report that considered farms of a more normal size, using conventional production methods. In other words, Century’s figures grossly

exaggerate the financial viability of its farming proposal. The ministry letter also points out the Community Based Farm District plan gives insufficient details on soils and crops, without which, an informed decision by Delta council cannot be made. As Delta residents we have become all too familiar with a mayor and council who dismiss the will of the majority while pandering to the demands of a developer. Peter Malim

Time to wave back The first ballet recital was approaching and all of the little ballerinas were anxiously waiting in the wings of the stage for their debut. The call was made and they all trooped out together ready to perform the dance they had practiced all year. I didn’t recognize my little fouryear-old until she stood and waved. I thought to myself, “A star is born.” I then remembered the story of Jesus healing a man who had been consumed by “demons.” The evil spirits were sent into a herd of pigs, who in turn ran over a cliff and died. He entered the “stage” of his life in a new way, healthy and whole. Like my little four-year-old child, he, too, bravely entered in and proclaimed what God had done for him.

What is fascinating in the story is that as the healed man entered the town, people were afraid of him, for he had once been wild and destructive. Even now, as he stood and proclaimed new life given to him by Jesus, people shied away. I can almost imagine him standing on the street corner, waving at the crowds. He was not afraid, but others could not get past their fear and listen or see him fully. How often do we do the same? A child of God stands before us waving, wanting to engage in life, and because of our fear we cross the road and walk on the other side. Perhaps it’s time for us to wave back and enter in the new life for all God’s children.

DSS student wins heritage scholarship for website

Antony Tsui of Delta Secondary is the recipient of the Corporation of Delta’s 2013 Heritage Commission Scholarship. His submission, the website The Deltan Century — Delta Secondary School

Celebrating 100 Years, tells the history of the school, including highlights from past events, and showcases the school’s centennial celebrations. “I am so proud of our local graduating students

who displayed such a great interest in Delta’s heritage through this scholarship,” said Mayor Lois Jackson. “We received quality submissions that show our heritage is in good hands in the future.”

The entry from Sarah Strukoff of Delta Secondary was recognized with an honourable mention. Her essay described the importance of the Westham Island Bridge to her family and Delta’s heritage.

The Delta Heritage Commission Scholarship is awarded annually to encourage students to display an interest in local or regional heritage through the development of an original piece of work.

The winner receives $750 towards post-secondary studies. Jackson will present the first place award certificate to Tsui at the July 15 meeting of Delta council at municipal hall.

T

he live@5005 concert series heads into the summer break with a show next Friday from returning band Raising Change. The group played its first “sit down, theatre type of show” at Genesis Theatre last September and is coming back with new members Holly Burke on flute and Ken Cade on electric violin, along with a returning core of Glenn Chatten (guitar, sitar), Ross Fairbairn (bass, guitar, harmonium) and Pat Covernton (keyboards, piano, djembe). “We’re getting larger as we go,” says Chatten. The group, which “just blew everybody away” at its first concert, according to theatre manager Steve Campbell, is adding more material for a full two-hour performance, compared to about an hour-long show last time. “We’re adding some neat stuff to it.” That includes Crescent Moon Over Laos, an almost

15-minute song Chatten says he wrote to coincide with a new book by Mark Boyter. Chatten also notes the group hopes to add a background visual element to the show using some of Boyter’s photos from Laos taken in the 1980s. The band itself performs a variety of musical styles and genres, Chatten notes. “We can go down folk genres, classical music, to jazz and you really don’t know where it’s going to go next,” he says, adding the band almost seamlessly transitions from song to song during shows. “We take people off and away we go,” he says. “You just don’t know where it’s all going to end.” The concert is set for Friday, June 28 at 8 p.m. Doors are at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 (cash only) and are available at the door. More information can be found at www.genesistheatre.ca. The live@5005 concert series will resume in September.

Artist raising money for animals Tsawwassen’s Michael Duncan selling pen and inks, colour pieces BY

JESSICA KERR

jkerr@delta-optimist.com

A local artist is selling more of his work to raise money to help animals in the region. In 2009, Michael Duncan, a professional artist and long-time Tsawwassen resident, started Artist-Helping Abused Animals (AHAA). That same year, he began selling his original pen and ink drawings of local heritage sites to raise money for the Delta Community Animal Shelter. Since then, Duncan and AHAA have raised more than $10,000 to help animals in need through the shelter as well as other local organizations such as OWL and the Delta Homeless Animal Fund. This time he has a number of his pen and ink drawings for sale as well as some of his colour pieces

Duncan was inspired to start AHAA by his own pet, Ellie, an Australian cattle dog that was abused and ended up at a shelter. Dr. Kevin Harris at the Trenant Park Pet Clinic united Ellie with Duncan after his wife’s death a decade ago. Before starting a new life with Duncan in South Delta, Ellie was found in the Prince George area starving and beaten with eight dead pups. Duncan said Ellie is getting older and with several health PHOTO BY JESSICA KERR issues he does not Local artist Michael Duncan puts the finishing touches on one of his pen and expect her to be ink drawings. The works all depict different heritage sites around Delta and around much longer. are on sale to raise funds for Artists-Helping Abused Animals. “The whole purpose of me doing inspired by West Coast First The 15-by-20-inch (unframed) and all the this was Ellie,” he said. MEMBERSHIP AT BEACH GROVE GOLF CLUB

Great for golf, socializing & networking The Club recently welcomed Mr. Ryan Gerrard to the membership. Ryan joined under the Graduated Dues program allowing him to take advantage of excellent value of the current initiation program while limiting his monthly dues and rounds of golf to a level that matches his available time. We asked Ryan to share with us some of his thoughts on golf and on Beach Grove Golf Club as a place to play and network. Why Beach Grove? I had been both a junior and intermediate member at Beach Grove throughout my youth. Not once did I ever get bored with playing the course and always found myself comparing other courses back to Beach Grove. The course is tough enough, but not too hard. It will reward the golfer that utilizes course management and who has the patience to only attack when they have the opportunity. What do you love about golf? I have been playing golf since I was 10 years old and not once have I walked off a golf course and said that was a waste of four hours. Regardless of how I play, being outside and enjoying the company of my fellow golfers is my priority. The fact that even the smallest of adjustments can have such a magniKed impact on the outcome and score is incredible. Perfection of the game of golf is near impossible creating a sport that requires a lot of time and practice to achieve results. It is a game of highs and lows and search for the next high is what keeps me coming back round after round. Why the graduated dues program? Having the ability to join Beach Grove Golf Club under the graduated dues program is an incredible opportunity. As I am currently establishing an Investment Management business which requires a lot of time, golf is not currently my priority. However, the opportunity was too good to pass on and still allows me to play a couple times a month, but more importantly gives me access to a number of networking opportunities alongside the clubs fabulous golf course. Hopefully, spending more time building my business now will allow me more time to entertain clients down the road. How do you see yourself using the Club now and in the future? The Club features a spectacular golf course to entertain clients and wonderful facilities to host medium to large seminars and even entertain prospective clients in the dining area. I plan to use the facilities and great service from the staff to my advantage in building and maintaining business relationships with high proKle clients and prospective clients.

“She came into my life and she was a whole ray of sunshine. We did all of this in Ellie’s name.” Duncan’s work has been showcased at the Vancouver International Wildlife Art Show and the Pacific Rim Wildlife Art Show. The municipality has also recognized him for his work in preserving Delta’s heritage. In 2009 he received a Friends of Heritage Award for providing a window into Delta’s past through his illustrated sketches published in his book Green Horizons: This Then is Delta. Duncan said AHAA has a small group of dedicated volunteers but is always looking for more people to help out. For more information on AHAA or the prints, call Duncan at 604-948-0301 or Karen Bennett at 604-9431442.

Sidekick auditions

The art of weaving

In celebration of Aboriginal History Month, Delta libraries hosted an artist in residence, weaver Loretta Williams. Williams showcased her work at all three Delta libraries last week.

The Sidekick Players open their 17th season this fall with one of the most moving plays ever written. Auditions for The Laramie Project will be held on Tuesday, June 25 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Tsawwassen Arts Centre. Males and females from 20 to late 50s are required. There are over 60 characters and some actors will take on several roles with “cameo” appearances. Written by Moisés Kaufman and members of Tectonic Theatre Project, and directed for Sidekick by Carroll Lefebvre, The Laramie Project documents a troubling time in American history. On Oct. 6, 1998, Matthew Shepard was beaten and left to die tied to a fence in the outskirts of Laramie, Wyoming. He died six days later. His torture and murder became a watershed moment in America that highlighted

many of the fault lines in our culture. A month after the murder, the members of Tectonic Theatre Project travelled to Laramie to conduct interviews with people of the town. From these interviews they wrote the play, which they later made into a film for HBO. More than 30 million people have seen the piece. “This is a challenge for Sidekick as we’ve leaned more toward comedies,” said Lefebvre, “and a challenge for the community. This deals with bullying at its extreme and when this happened, it became worldwide news that still evokes anger and compassion amongst us all.” The Laramie Project will be performed at the Tsawwassen Arts Centre Oct. 10 to 26. The first Saturday performance (Oct. 12) is the 15th anniversary of Shepard’s death. For further information, e-mail carroll.lefebvre@hotmail.com.

An Alaskan adventure BY

MARGARET DEEFHOLTS

J

Optimist contributor

ust beyond the dock in Skagway, Alaska, I look at a display of photographs taken just over a century ago. One of them is a shot of the harbour. The shoreline, seen through the cameraman’s lens, is a quagmire of mud. There is no landing dock, not even a pier. Horses, dogs, bundles of clothing, cooking utensils, camping gear and cardboard boxes containing provisions lie strewn above the high-water mark. The year is 1897. In my mind’s eye the scene is takes on colour and movement. They have travelled from San Francisco and Seattle, packed like cattle in tramp steamers, hungry for Yukon gold — and redemption from the grim economic depression that engulfed the last decade of the 19th century. Some are self-proclaimed gentleman adventurers on the road to El Dorado; others are ordinary citizens, bank clerks and blue-collar workers. Most are desperados: stubble-chinned, brawling toughs who would give Skagway, with its bars, flop-houses and con artists, the reputation of being the most lawless town in Alaska. Of the 100,000 prospectors who arrived on these shores, only 40,000 would make it to Dawson City in the Yukon. Some took the short but gruelling Chilkoot Trail out of Dyea; others with equipment loaded on horses or dog-sleds, opted for the White Pass trail winding for 40 miles through a wilderness of slush, shale and unyielding rock-face to Lake Bennett — and thence a further 500 miles up the Yukon River by boat. Fast-forward a century. Our tour bus halts on the broad Klondike Highway and the group dismounts to gaze at the remnants of the White Pass Trail, only two feet wide in sections and overgrown now by vegetation. I am both awed and aghast. Awed by the stampeders’ tenacity in the face of

terrifying odds; aghast at the sight of Dead Horse Gulch where 3,000 horses plagued by sores, lacerated hooves and whip-lashed by frustrated owners, lost their footing and plunged down a 500-foot canyon to their deaths. The trail snakes past rock falls, rushing streams and precipitous gullies. Ice-Age glaciers stand jagged-toothed against the sky, frigid and inscrutable witnesses to humanity’s quest for transient wealth and glory. En-route back to Skagway, our tour bus pulls into Liarsville — a replica of a Klondike campsite. Our hosts tell us that Liarsville derived its name from the pressmen who arrived here in pursuit of the hottest media scoop of the decade. Needless to say, after one horrified look, they vamoosed in a hurry. However, to satisfy their editors (and the public, panting for information), they filed reports that read like travel brochure advertisements: trails winding through lush evergreen forests with picture-postcard mountain peaks in the background and a cruise through the sparkling waters of Lake Bennett and the Yukon River. “Typical yellow journalism!” says the speaker. “No different from today!” The crowd chuckles; I surreptitiously remove my press badge. Liarsville is artfully

reconstructed. There is a barbershop stocked with what looks like medieval instruments of torture and a laundry and dry goods store whose porch boasts a honky-tonk piano. The stampeders paused here to bolster their spirits at the bar (both literally and figuratively), linger in the company of ladies offering the delights of “negotiable affection,” stock up on tobacco and provisions, and exchange yarns of braggadocio before hitting the relentless trail once more. A vaudeville show is in progress. Cookies and mulled cider in hand, I chuckle at anecdotes, boo/hiss villainous characters, envy the lissom curves of “Klondike Kate” and thrill to the verses of Robert Service. I also pan for gold and go “aaaah!” as I find a teensy speck in my pan. Which is more than what the sourdoughs took home. By the time they reached Dawson City, all the claims had been staked and the owners of the mines had already raked in their millions’ worth of gleaming nuggets. For some stampeders, however, the journey was accomplishment enough: an adventure of heroic proportions. They were metaphorical Argonauts, in search of the Golden Fleece, and, ironically enough, fleeced is what they were. Travel Writers’ Tales is an independent newspaper syndicate.

Boston Bound aims to raise funds to help Kenzie Peters cover the $64,000 tuition to attend Boston’s prestigious Berklee College of Music.

Are you looking for the ultimate "Lap Cat"? Look NO further! This is the girl for you!! Poppy was surrendered due to her owners no longer being able to handle their allergies (no fault of her own) They described Poppy as the most friendly, gentle and easy-going cat they have ever met. Poppy is great around ALL children and very gentle and tolerant of them. She enjoys going outside on nice summer days and lounging with her family on the patio. She was living with another cat, though she did not enjoy his company, she was tolerant of his presence. A home all to her own is what Poppy would love! OH, with lots of people to love or lots of love to give one person, either works for her!.

Local performers are getting together this Sunday evening in Tsawwassen for Boston Bound, an outdoor summer concert. Singer/songwriter Kenzie Peters is teaming up with Tracy Neff, Jacob Wolstencroft, Jordon Letawsky, Quincy Chimich and Dallas Stars singer Taylor Peters in a witty and quirky fundraiser. Boston Bound was inspired by Peters’ recent acceptance to the prestigious Berklee College of Music. When asked about this rare opportunity, Peters responds, “Music has always been a calling of mine and now I have been given the opportunity to study my style of music at the most acclaimed school in the world.” Berklee is the largest independent college of contemporary music world-

wide. To date, the school’s alumni have received 231 Grammys, popular music’s highest honour. Peters’ first year at Berklee will set her back $64,000 and she is doing everything possible to raise the money to pursue her dream. Local artists are behind her 100 per cent and are donating their time and talents to make this evening one to remember. The audience can expect to be grooving, laughing and breathing in the summer air. The venue is an outdoor space provided by the South Delta Baptist Church where Peters has been an instrumental part of the music ministry for years. “It’s such a blessing when you know that your community is behind you. Apparently it takes a village to send a child to music school.” Peters played the part of Maria in South Delta Secondary’s acclaimed production of the Sound of Music. “The show was basically chosen in order to showcase Kenzie’s talent,” says Neff, the production’s music director. “Not only did she carry the whole show but she was integral in assisting me with the ensemble singing and helping her fellow actor/singers prepare their material.” Upon graduating from SDSS in 2012, having completed two years of Delta’s Film Academy, Peters was promptly cast in a lead role at the Vancouver Fringe Festival and followed by playing keys for Studio 58’s production of Spring Awakening. All profits from Sunday’s show will go directly to Peters’ tuition. Boston Bound will be held in the South Delta Baptist Church’s back courtyard at 8 p.m. Tickets are by donation.

2014 Cherokee has whole new look Jeep designers taking risk by applying modern sculpting to former box-like model BY

MALCOLM GUNN

www.wheelbasemedia.com

Are you shocked and slack-jawed about the 2014 Jeep Cherokee that will arrive later this year?

Who can really blame you. After all, it was the immensely popular — and very square — XJ-designated Cherokee that introduced truckloads of buyers to the virtues of four-wheel-

drive as far back as 1984. For the next two decades, it remained steadfastly unchanged until the Liberty stepped in for the 2002 model year. With the Liberty’s retire-

ment, however, ChryslerFiat’s off-road division has resurrected the Cherokee brand, but with a significant — and controversial — shift in direction. For starters, instead of

Jeep transformed the square-looking Cherokee to give it cutting-edge style. the brick-like original, the latest model has some seriously modern sculpting going on. All by itself, the pinched and pointy-nose grille says plenty about the risk that Jeep’s designers have undertaken in creating the new Cherokee. Then there are the eyelet headlights that would have been impossible to imagine on any production car, Jeep or otherwise ... until now, that is. It’s as if the designers snuck a futuristic concept model out the back door and ordered up full production before any of the higher-ups got wise to the plan. The rest of the sheet metal appears pretty tame by comparison, but encasing the body in protective lower cladding gives the Cherokee a handsomely rugged silhouette. The interior is also as modern as the outside. In the last few years Jeep has switched from utilitarian hard plastic dashboards to creating inviting soft-touch shapes. All but the most basic Cherokee models feature 12.7- or 21-centimetre touch-screens, depending on the trim level, that operate climate, communications and infotainment systems. The split-folding and fore-/aft-sliding second-row seat is standard, while an available fold-flat front passenger seat has storage beneath the flip-up bottom cushion. Concurrent with its groundbreaking design, the 2014 Cherokee takes a fresh approach with its powertrain offerings. Base models feature a Fiat-designed 2.4-litre four-cylinder worth 184 horsepower and 171 pound-feet of torque.

Optional is an all-new 3.2-litre V6 that’s rated at 271 horsepower and 239 pound-feet of torque. It’s a subset of Chrysler’s 3.6-litre V6 that’s the base engine in the Jeep Grand Cherokee and Wrangler plus numerous other models such as the Ram pickup. In the case of the Cherokee, selecting the V6 provides a 2,040-kilogram towing capacity. Both engines are connected to nine-speed automatic transmissions; it’s the first use of that gear changer in any Chrysler. That’s also five more ratios than the outgoing Liberty had, while Jeep claims it helps produce crisp off-theline launches and contributes to the Cherokee’s 6.3 l/100 km highway rating for the 2.4 and 6.7 l/100 km for the 3.2. Jeep hasn’t released city numbers yet. Front-wheel-drive is the Cherokee norm, but buyers will be able to choose from three different four-wheeldrive setups, depending on trim level. Active Drive I, optional in the Sport, Latitude and Limited editions, is a single-speed unit that kicks in automatically whenever tire slip is detected. Active Drive II, also available in the same models, comes with a twospeed transfer case and is designed for off-road use with either the four- or sixcylinder engines. However, for rock crawling and boulder hopping, Active Drive Lock, as the name implies, locks up the rear differential in low range. This system is standard in the Cherokee Trailhawk, which is a “Trail See JEEP page 23

June 21, 2013 The Delta Optimist A23

DriveTıme

JEEP from page 22 Rated” rig outfitted with an off-road suspension (that increases ride height by an 2.5 centimetres), skid plates, unique alloy wheels with all-terrain rubber, blacked-out trim and a fullsize spare. All 4x4 systems include Selec-Terrain traction control with five different settings to match the kind of ground you’re covering (snow, sand, mud, etc.). Pricing for the base Cherokee Sport will likely

start in the upper-$20,000 range, which sits between the smaller $18,500 (base price) Compass and the larger $40,000 Grand Cherokee, effectively providing a brand-new product in a crucial size and price niche. But what about the controversy? Forget about it. The Cherokee has veered off its traditional path to seek out new worlds and supporters.

The Trailhawk model gets all the off-road goodies, including a locking rear differential. Although the new optional V6 is smaller than the outgoing Liberty’s V6, it makes 50 more horses and gets much better fuel economy. Part of the credit goes to a standard ninespeed automatic transmission.

What you should know: 2014 Jeep Cherokee Type: Four-door, front- /four-wheel-drive compact sport utility vehicle Engines (hp): 2.4-litre DOHC I4 (184); 3.2-litre DOHC V6 (271) Transmission: Nine-speed automatic Market position: The Cherokee name returns following a lengthy hiatus, but dressed up in more contemporary sheet metal that belies its ability to still navigate difficult on- and off-road terrain. Points: Gorgeous design upsets many Jeep purists, but should find favour with a much wider range of new customers; CVTs are the future? How about Jeep’s new ninespeed automatic? Virtually every safety feature in the book is included or can be added. New V6 and three separate 4x4 provide plenty of choice. Nice bridge model between Compass and GC. Safety: Front airbags; front/rear side-impact airbags; side-curtain airbags; front knee airbags; anti-lock brakes; traction control; stability control. Fuel economy: L/100 km (city/hwy) 8.7/6.3 (2.4 FWD, est.) Base price (incl. destination): $28,000 (est.)

By comparison Nissan Xterra Base price: $33,900 Rugged truck-based SUV offers good power plus goanywhere capability. Subaru Outback Base price: $30,100 Spacious wagon comes with AWD and four- and six-cylinder choices. Toyota RAV4 Base price: $25,400 All-new 2013 model has improved looks and functionality at a great price.

Pioneer Local alumni Tides game tomorrow

Tournament action!

Pacific Standard Time. Height in feet

The Ladner Pioneers Alumni Lacrosse Association will be hosting its annual alumni game tomorrow at the Ladner Leisure Centre, bringing together past Pioneer and master players. The game, set for 2:30 p.m., is a warm-up for those who will be playing in this year’s Masters tournament on the Canada Day weekend in Nanaimo.

The success of the franchise and the number of local players available helped create a Senior “C” team for players to continue playing.

Delta Islanders in standings logjam with four regular season games to go

The Delta Islanders find themselves in a logjam in the B.C. Junior ‘A’ Lacrosse League standings as the team heads into the home stretch of the regular season. Delta currently sits in third place with 20 points, only four out of first place. On the other hand clubs like Victoria and Langley are hot on their tails with games in hand. The teams are in the hunt for a top two finish and the

accompanying first-round bye in the upcoming postseason. Defending champs Coquitlam, along with New Westminster, are currently holding down the top two spots in the standings. Delta suffered a setback earlier this week in the form of a 10-4 loss against the New Westminster Salmonbellies Tuesday at Queens Park Arena. New Westminster, which was riding a six-game winning streak entering the tilt,

opened the scoring about halfway through the opening frame thanks to Jeremy Bosher’s first of four on the night. The Islanders responded with goals from Eli McLaughlin and Cody Nass to finish the first up 2-1. New Westminster came back to retake the lead with three markers in the second and didn’t let up in the third with six more. Anthony Malcom had two goals and a helper while Quinn Smith

finished with a goal and four assists for the ‘Bellies. Frank Scigliano ended the night with 27 saves. McLaughlin and Nass each had two goals while Mike Henry got two helpers for Delta. Ryland Hood made 54 saves in the loss. The Islanders will try to bounce back and pick up crucial points tomorrow night at Ladner Arena against the Victoria Shamrocks. Game time is 5 p.m.

The Ladner Pioneers tradition started in 1981 and the brand is still going strong into its 32nd year in the West Coast Senior “B” Lacrosse League, making it the longest tenure of any franchise in the league. The Pioneers continue to be one of the top teams year after year and provide an opportunity for local players to continue to play a high level of lacrosse after they finish their junior careers. The success of the franchise and the number of local players available helped create a Senior “C” team for players to continue playing. The Pioneer Alumni Association was started in 2007 to provide assistance to minor lacrosse in Delta as well as the Ladner Pioneers’ “B,” “C” and masters teams. The association has sponsored individual players selected to Team B.C. in box and field lacrosse championships.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Mom at Mountain View Manor on June 18th, surrounded by her loving family. She is survived by her children Janet (Bill), Donna (Gord) and Ken (Moira), and devoted sister Elsie (Larry). Adored by her grandchildren Jeff (Melissa), Cam, Hilary, Chris, Ali, Tara-Lee (James), Tynan, Allan, Stewart and great-grandchildren Isabelle and Ilsa. Mom also had many nieces and nephews who played an important role in her life. Pat was predeceased by husband Ken, brother Bob and sister Mable. Mom’s outgoing personality always captured peoples’ hearts. She loved her flowers, trips to Vancouver Island, cheering for the Canucks and her Thursday afternoon Happy Hour. We would like to thank Dr. David Kason for his kind care and all the staff at Mountain View who treated Mom as family. They brought kindness, compassion and humor into Mom’s life. As well, a special thank you to Ellen for being such a good friend and roommate. We would also like to thank the rehab team at Delta Hospital, especially Keri, who brought much laughter to Mom. A Celebration to honor Pat will take place on Thursday, June 27, 2013, 1:00 to 4:00 pm at The Delta Town and Country Inn, 6005 Highway 17, Ladner, BC. In lieu of flowers, donations to Mountain View ECU would be appreciated..

BILICKI, Elizabeth (Werbowetski) Sep 12, 1935 - Jun 06, 2013

Devoted wife, cherished mother, awesome granny, terrific sister, fabulous aunt and true friend, is going to be greatly missed by all of us. Liz is survived by her husband of 52 years Walter and two children, daughter Kim (Daryl), son Ken, two grandchildren, Jake and Mitchell and brothers Stan (Delores), Bill (Sandra) and their extended families. Liz was born in Caldar, Saskatchewan in 1935, her family moved to Roblin, Manitoba in 1937, then to Fort William, Ontario in 1949, where her passion for singing blossomed. In 1958 she moved to Toronto with her girl friend Sonia to expand their musical horizons. Her claim to fame was living in the same apartment block as Donald Sutherland. In 1959 she made another move to Winnipeg, Manitoba and married Walter in 1961, before moving to Richmond, British Columbia in 1963. After moving to BC she sang with several choirs, Richmond Musical Theatre Club, Richmond Singers, Alegro, Keynote Choir, Old Spice Girls, Ladner Glee Club and made many life long friends. She brought joy to all those she sang for with her positive outlook, infectious smile, and willingness to lend a helping hand to those in need. Liz also volunteered for many years at the McKee House on the Special Events Committee. A Celebration of Life will be held at the McKee Seniors Recreation Centre, 5155 47th Ave, Delta, BC on Sunday June 30th, 2013, from 1-4pm. DAVIDSON, William “Jock”

Jock died peacefully on June 15, 2013 after a well lived life of 83 years. He was predeceased by his wife Yvonne; they shared 56 years of love and laughter and a life filled with sports, especially badminton, golf and lawn bowling. He leaves behind his three loving sons: Ian, Keith and Gary. Also Gary’s wife, Lori, Keith’s fiancé, Susy, his five grandchildren, three greatgrandchildren and a large group of friends including his loving companion of the last three years, Laurel Scott. Laurel was a tremendous help to Jock during his illness, for which his family will be forever grateful. Jock was born in Aberdeen, Scotland. He left school at 14 to work and help support his Mum; first in a butcher shop and later on the fishing trawlers in the North Sea. He was called up to the British Army in 1948 and served with the Royal Engineers in Germany, Egypt, Libya and England. Jock spent most of his time in the Army Physical Training Corps as a physical therapist, rehabilitating wounded soldiers. He was proud of the fact that he shook hands with Field Marshall Montgomery, when as the youngest soldier ever, he was promoted to Sergeant Major. After 23 years of service he left the Army to come to Canada in 1970. He continued his rehabilitation work for 27 years at the Worker’s Compensation Board, helping injured workers. His healing hands and strong spirit helped many. Jock will be remembered for his competitive spirit, his love of humour, playing the harmonica, and for being a very special “character”. He will be missed. A Celebration of Jock’s Life will be held at Delta Funeral Home, 5329 Ladner Trunk Road, Delta, BC on Tuesday, June 25th, 2013 at 2:00 pm, with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Delta Hospital Foundation, (info@deltahospital.com), or to a charity of your choice. The family asks that in consideration of Laurel’s allergies, no fragrance of any kind be worn to the service. Delta Funeral Home (604) 946-6040
