The annual Quilt Walk and Classic Car Show is set to roll into Ladner once again this weekend. Thousands of residents and visitors will flock to the streets of Ladner Village Sunday for the yearly event. Hosted by the Ladner Business Association and The Quilted Bear, the event is in its 10th year and typically attracts in the area of 10,000 people to see the hundreds of classic cars and colourful quilts. Initially a popular quilt exhibit, the addition of the classic cars came a few years after its inception. The free event typically attracts hundreds of classic cars from around the region — many vintage car owners have attended the show every year to proudly show off their restored vehicles. Each year a myriad of colourful and creative quilts are put on display in many Village business windows while the cars are displayed along 48th Avenue and Delta Street. In addition to the cars and quilts, organizers have also lined up lots of prizes, vendors, refreshments and entertainment.

Next step for slough float homes Preliminary approval for application that recreational users of local waterway have complained bitterly about BY

Council this week granted preliminary approval to a controversial application to build a number of float homes in Deas Slough. The proposal by Kyan Management Corporation and Grove Crest Stables would result in a subdivision in the 6303 River Road area to construct 11 singlefamily homes on upland lots

and 11 float homes on proposed water lots in the slough. The float homes would be approximately 2,400-square-feet with piers. “I’m glad we’re sending this to a public hearing. There’s been a lot of confusion about this application and disinformation how far the water lots will extend into the slough. My understanding is it will have minimal impact,” said Coun. Scott Hamilton. Coun. Robert Campbell agreed,

saying the applicant appears to have satisfied all the required mitigation and that users of the slough and the housing can coexist. Saying the owner has been willing to work with the public to address concerns, Coun. Ian Paton noted the applicant would be able to answer questions and concerns that will be raised at the upcoming hearing. Recreational users of the

waterway have complained bitterly about the application, saying allowing foreshore water lots would give the new homeowners rights over a public waterway and block some activities from taking place. Mike Murphy, president of Rowing Canada Aviron, was one of many letter writers voicing objection, saying Deas Slough is the proud home to many rowers, canoe and kayakers, dragon

boaters, wake boarders and water skiers. He also noted it’s considered one of the best sites in Canada for adaptive rowing, and for 27 years has been host to many local and provincial regattas. Supporting the application, Delta’s Community Planning and Advisory Committee recommended agreements be in place to advise future property owners that the river is actively used.
