The annual Quilt Walk and Classic Car Show is set to roll into Ladner once again this weekend. Thousands of residents and visitors will flock to the streets of Ladner Village Sunday for the yearly event. Hosted by the Ladner Business Association and The Quilted Bear, the event is in its 10th year and typically attracts in the area of 10,000 people to see the hundreds of classic cars and colourful quilts. Initially a popular quilt exhibit, the addition of the classic cars came a few years after its inception. The free event typically attracts hundreds of classic cars from around the region — many vintage car owners have attended the show every year to proudly show off their restored vehicles. Each year a myriad of colourful and creative quilts are put on display in many Village business windows while the cars are displayed along 48th Avenue and Delta Street. In addition to the cars and quilts, organizers have also lined up lots of prizes, vendors, refreshments and entertainment.

Next step for slough float homes Preliminary approval for application that recreational users of local waterway have complained bitterly about BY

SANDOR GYARMATI

sgyarmati@delta-optimist.com

Council this week granted preliminary approval to a controversial application to build a number of float homes in Deas Slough. The proposal by Kyan Management Corporation and Grove Crest Stables would result in a subdivision in the 6303 River Road area to construct 11 singlefamily homes on upland lots

and 11 float homes on proposed water lots in the slough. The float homes would be approximately 2,400-square-feet with piers. “I’m glad we’re sending this to a public hearing. There’s been a lot of confusion about this application and disinformation how far the water lots will extend into the slough. My understanding is it will have minimal impact,” said Coun. Scott Hamilton. Coun. Robert Campbell agreed,

saying the applicant appears to have satisfied all the required mitigation and that users of the slough and the housing can coexist. Saying the owner has been willing to work with the public to address concerns, Coun. Ian Paton noted the applicant would be able to answer questions and concerns that will be raised at the upcoming hearing. Recreational users of the

waterway have complained bitterly about the application, saying allowing foreshore water lots would give the new homeowners rights over a public waterway and block some activities from taking place. Mike Murphy, president of Rowing Canada Aviron, was one of many letter writers voicing objection, saying Deas Slough is the proud home to many rowers, canoe and kayakers, dragon

boaters, wake boarders and water skiers. He also noted it’s considered one of the best sites in Canada for adaptive rowing, and for 27 years has been host to many local and provincial regattas. Supporting the application, Delta’s Community Planning and Advisory Committee recommended agreements be in place to advise future property owners that the river is actively used.

Trust celebrates two decades in the community Delta Farmland & Wildlife Trust has been bridging the gap between local farmers and wildlife for 20 years The local non-profit organization that works with farmers in habitat stewardship is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. The Delta Farmland & Wildlife Trust’s (DF&WT) mandate has always been not to acquire lands for habitat, but instead work in partnership with the private landowners to ensure farming and wildlife continues to exist side-by-side. Through a variety of programs, the trust works with local farmers to plant winter cover crops, establish and maintain hedgerows, grass margins, and grassland set-aside habitat. In addition, the trust offers programs for farmers to amend their soil pH, and re-contour their fields for optimal crop production. Bridging the interests of conservationists and farmers together, the programs are tailored to meet specific challenges to agriculture, while also providing valuable food sources and cover for wildlife. To understand the significance of this partnership, it’s important to look back at one of the critical issues that eventually led to the formation of the Trust. An agricultural community well known for producing a variety of crops, the lower Fraser River delta is also Canada’s top Important Bird Area,

which hosts large volumes of migratory birds over the winter season. Snow geese, trumpeter swans, widgeon and mallards are some species of waterfowl that migrate along the Pacific Flyway and stopover in Delta to replenish their food stores in order to continue their migration. These internationally significant migratory birds not only feed on the foreshore marshes of Boundary Bay, but also rely on the habitat provided by farmland in Delta and Richmond. Waterfowl grazing has been prevalent on Delta farmland for decades, however in the late 1980s, farmers began to see increased crop damage and losses as a result of heavy field grazing. Dairy farmers, who depend on perennial forage crops to feed their cattle, found that their grass fields were decimated as waterfowl continually grazed any new growth emerging in the spring season. In addition to the cost of re-seeding their fields, many forage producers were forced to import hay for their cattle, which added to the mounting economic costs caused by inadvertently providing food for huge migrating flocks. Vegetable producers faced a similar plight. Due to heavy waterfowl grazing on over-wintering

vegetable crops, farmers were met with limitations in the range of crops that they were able to plant. Farmers preferred crops produced early in the season, as processors offered a better price for an early crop. However, the timing of planting was limited by predation, which meant many farmers who regularly planted vegetables early in the season could no longer do so. Neither dairy, nor vegetable crop producers were compensated for their economic losses.Delta farmers continue to incur damage from waterfowl grazing, however with the establishment of DF&WT in 1993, producers now receive a cost-share in exchange for planting specific cover crops and grasses to enhance and maintain both soil conservation and wildlife habitat. The very issue that divided local agriculture and wildlife conservation communities has brought them together to work as partners in stewardship — providing benefits to the entire Delta community and beyond. Learn more about local agriculture at DF&WT’s much anticipated community event, “Day at the Farm,” at Westham Island Herb Farm on Sept. 7, or visit www.deltafarmland. ca.

Delta waiting on fines for Ladner Village parking violations BY

SANDOR GYARMATI

sgyarmati@delta-optimist.com

Delta won’t be handing out fines right away to people who park their vehicles too long in Ladner Village. CAO George Harvie offered that assurance on behalf of the bylaws department this week as council approved a new threehour restriction throughout the core. The time limited parking will be “enforceable” Monday through Saturday between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. The only exception would be a 20minute drop off zone in front of the bottle depot. The off-street public lots on Chisholm and Bridge Streets, as well as

Westminster Avenue where additional spots will be added, will continue to allow all-day parking. However, signage will be posted at those lots notifying vehicle owners that overnight parking isn’t allowed. Noting the municipality has been working with the Ladner Business Association on the issue, Harvie said bylaws staff will first concentrate on educating motorists. A report will come back to council on the results in about three months, at which time the civic politicians may agree to go ahead with allowing fines. This week the Optimist asked several people leaving or going to their vehicles what they thought of the new time restric-

tion and increased enforcement. A couple expressed frustration at the current situation, saying it does play into their decision whether to come to the village, but most others said they are able to find a spot, although they may have to drive around a few times. Managing to find a prime spot on Delta Street, in front of the hospital auxiliary store, Ladner resident Sara Sochting said the three-hour restriction seems more than enough time for people to do their shopping and grab a meal. Saying she has no problem parking a couple of blocks away and walking, Donna Mann, a former local resident who was visiting town with her son Jamie, noted it’s

even trickier finding a spot with a truck. “Somehow we always manage to find something because people are always coming and going. Three hours would be plenty of time for us popping in and out of stores,” she said. Jamie agreed, noting finding parking is most difficult during business hours, and especially during summer in the village. He said parking shouldn’t be an issue for people willing to do a little walking. Business and office employees taking up valuable street spots all day have been blamed for causing most of the street parking shortage in the core. Council this week also decided against exempting veterans.

Farm gets go ahead for waste-to-energy project After approval from council, operation to produce renewable energy in form of biogas to be sold to FortisBC BY

JESSICA KERR

jkerr@delta-optimist.com

A local dairy farm recently got the green light for its waste-to-energy project. Last month, civic politicians approved a proposal from Seabreeze Farm Ltd. on 112th Street in Ladner to build a biogas facility,

which includes an anaerobic digester that would process on-farm agricultural material, such as manure, crop waste and silage, as well as off-farm non-agricultural feedstocks, including fats, oils and greases. The facility will produce renewable energy in the form of biogas that would be sold to FortisBC.

Council gave the project third reading following a public hearing last month. At the hearing, Jim Hessels, who lives nearby voiced his support for the project, saying that the use of an anaerobic digester, while new to Delta, is a tried and true technology that is used in other parts of the world.

He also said that the technology benefits the environment through the production of natural gas and organic digestate. The Agricultural Land Commission has also endorsed the application. A report to council earlier this summer, staff noted that odour control would be achieved by storing all

non-agricultural material in odour-tight tanks. The material would be pumped directly from the storage tanks to the anaerobic digester. After processing in the digester, the homogenized material is rendered essentially odourless. The post-digested material, known as digestate, would be separated with

the solid portion and used as livestock bedding, while the liquid would be used as fertilizer for crops. Non-agricultural off-farm feedstock would require five deliveries per week. Solid material would be delivered in dump trucktype haulers, while liquids would be delivered in haulers similar to milk trucks.

Council defers application to subdivide land in Brunswick Point BY

SANDOR GYARMATI

sgyarmati@delta-optimist.com

Delta council this week deferred an application by the provincial government to subdivide a parcel of agriculturally designated land in Brunswick Point.

Once occupied by the Brunswick Cannery, the 1.67 (four-acre) site is known as the “wedge parcel” and is surrounded by Canoe Pass to the north and agricultural uses to the west, south and east. The province wants to

subdivide the parcel, where no farming is currently taking place, into two lots, but no building or site improvements are planned. One of the new lots would be an upland portion and, according to a staff report, the province’s inten-

tion is to dispose of this lot. The Tsawwassen First Nation has first right of refusal to buy the property. The second lot, which is partially under water, would be retained by the province, thereby ensuring sensitive environmental habitat along the shoreline would be protected, the report states. Although the application received the support of Delta staff, as well as the Agricultural Land Commission, Delta civic politicians held off making a decision until provincial

representatives can appear to respond to questions from concerned residents. Council has recently received several letters from people opposed, many concerned about what the TFN would do there if the First Nation decides to purchase the site. At least one letter writer noted the parcel that would be sold off is too small to be a viable farm, thus it’s clear some sort of development would take place on the valuable habitat. A public notice sign was

installed on the property last month, prompting an area resident to complain the municipality was trying to sneak the application through during mid-summer, when many may not be aware of it taking place. If Delta council approves the application, the site would continue to be designated as agricultural in the Official Community Plan, requiring any future owner to make an application to change that designation before any development could go ahead.

The purpose of this bylaw is to authorize Council to discharge the land use contracts from the subject properjes in the list below to reveal the underlying RS1 Single Family Residenjal Zone. Address

MURPHY’S LAW That sound you just heard was all the NIMBYs exhaling. There was never any doubt the desirable Greater Vancouver region would continue to grow in the decades ahead, but there was much consternation, particularly in these parts, over where that growth would be accommodated. The term “fair share” has been bandied about for years, the expectation being that all areas within the Lower Mainland must absorb some portion of the increased population. It’s always been a prickly subject around here given we’re not terribly partial towards growth, we don’t have a lot of available land to handle it and, perhaps most importantly, we bristle at the idea of some regional level of government telling us how our community should develop. Regardless of such feelings, Metro Vancouver has a Regional Growth Strategy, and because Delta is part of Metro Vancouver, we’re obligated to help carry it out. We’ve long had an uneasy relationship with such an arrangement, the fear being that Metro would pressure us to grow at a rate at which we’re not comfortable. Those worries had to be allayed by numbers introduced at the Delta council table recently. Although the region’s population is expected to grow by 1.2 million over the next 30 years, Delta will be responsible for accommodating just over 20,000 of those people. That means even though we’ve got a shade under five per cent of the region’s population, we’ll be taking in less than two per cent of the newcomers. Our share doesn’t get a whole lot more “fair” than that. So while Delta’s population grows by less than one per cent per year, Surrey is adding something like 1,200 people a month. In other words, our neighbours to the east will welcome as many new residents in the next couple of years as Delta will over the next three decades. What’s even better news for those in South Delta who are particularly fond of the status quo is that most of that growth, according to our own civic leaders, will occur in North Delta, primarily along a Scott Road corridor Delta is trying to reinvigorate. Increasing density, including the recently approved 37-storey high-rise, is seen as a key component in revitalizing that tired stretch of road, and if that helps meet Metro Vancouver’s growth objectives, well, that doesn’t hurt either. So it looks like the worries that Delta will see its character fundamentally changed by regional decree are unfounded. It turns out we’ll be able to live with our “fair share” after all.

Oliver showed an ordinary man could make a difference DOUG HUSBAND

COMMUNITY COMMENT This week I continue a look at John Oliver, a local politician that hasn’t achieved the level of prominence he deserves. Although Oliver loved rural life and municipal politics, he set his sight on higher office. At age 43, he stepped into provincial politics in the election of 1900. He campaigned aggressively in the New Westminster/Delta riding and was successful. His introduction into the rough and tumble world of B.C. politics was most unkind. A plainspoken farmer, he was labeled a “hayseed” with his unsophisticated clothes, heavy boots and crude use of the English language. Over time he studied parliamentary procedure and carefully chose his causes championed in the legislature. In the new party system of politics in the early 1900s, Oliver was identified as a Liberal and was successful in three consecutive elec-

tions. He developed a reputation as a forceful and effective politician. In the autumn of 1909, Oliver was named leader of the B.C. Liberal party but with little time to prepare for the November election, he and his party were soundly defeated by the Conservatives. Oliver had campaigned in Delta and Victoria, losing both seats. This bitter defeat resulted in his return to Delta where he served a term as school trustee and a second term as reeve. In the federal election of 1911, Oliver ran as a Liberal candidate in New Westminster and lost. He suffered another defeat in the 1912 provincial election. In 1916 he ran successfully in the Dewdney provincial riding and now in government, he accepted two cabinet positions, agriculture and railways. Agriculture was a natural for him. He was responsible for the Land Settlement Act and successfully lobbied the federal government to establish a national policy for returning soldiers. In 1918 Harlan Brewster, leader of the B.C. Liberal party and premier, was suddenly stricken and died. Oliver was elected leader of the party and premier. B.C. was in the throes of post-war economic and social reform and the citizens seemed comforted with their new

plainspoken premier. In addition to general strikes over working conditions, the gender issue was front and centre over minimum wages for women, maintenance for deserted wives and their right to vote. On Dec. 1, 1920, B.C. women went to the provincial polls for the first time and his government won a slim majority. In 1921, as premier, he opened John Oliver Secondary, which remains a well-known Vancouver public school. Oliver’s reputation as a provincial leader and statesman is preserved in Oliver, B.C., with his bigger than life statue. His last session in the legislature in 1927 resulted in the passing of the Old Age Pension Act. As the first premier to do so, he was dubbed “the Father of Old Age Pensions in Canada.” At the time, he was seriously ill with cancer and at age 71 died in Victoria. He lay in state in the legislature chamber he had dominated for so many years and was given a ceremonial farewell. John Oliver was determined to show an ordinary man could make a difference in B.C. politics. His folksy yet combative style was emulated by many future B.C. premiers. And a good night to you, Ian.

August 16, 2013 The Delta Optimist A9 Letters to the Editor

Now is the time to speak

Editor: Well, Tsawwassen, that illustrious band from North Delta that is our municipal council has voted to send the Southlands development application to a public hearing in October. It is bewildering that, when the vast majority of South Delta residents still totally oppose any housing project on the farm, they feel they can go against those wishes and continue to pander to the speculator who owns the land. Given their track record, though, the vote was no real shocker. However, this does not mean it is a done deal; it does not mean Century Group gets to expand Tsawwassen’s population by the proposed 10 per cent and it does not mean they will be paving over yet more farmland with their brand of urban sprawl. Far

from it. What it is, though, is an opportunity. The public hearing will be our best chance yet, in its more formal format, to tell the mayor and council once again that none of the farmland at the Southlands should be built on. The last public hearing on the Southlands saw the development application denied. If this public hearing doesn’t persuade council to do the right thing, then the application would still have to get passed by Metro Vancouver and given that it does not comply with any of the relevant regional standards, it has a fair chance of being rejected at that regional level. The developer is increasing pressure in the press, is again giving out free T-shirts and is using lots of spin to further promote his

interests. Once the pressure from this development application has been neutralized, the community can then take time to decide what (if anything) it would like to see happen on the farmland. The community could then go to the land owner and discuss options from a more balanced position. Farmers in the area are crying out for more land to farm so why not let them farm it; all of it? What we have had to put up with so far is a persistent barrage of threats as the property developer attempts to push his agenda onto the community. This is it, Tsawwassen. Be prepared to speak out against this proposal in October or you will have 15 to 20 years of construction and a lifetime of congestion to wish that you had. Peter Malim

Growth in qualitative sense, not quantitative, is needed

Editor: If you have been led to believe that growth in population and development is inevitable, it is simply not true! There are countries in the developed world where the population growth rate is zero and in some cases declining. That is not the case in many developing countries. Millions of people emigrate to countries like Canada to get away from over-crowding, pollution and noise. The population increases when a culture is unaware that too many children per family is simply not logical or healthy. Developers thrive on immigration and the increase in population, and in the most part are insensitive to wildlife habitat and the need to preserve our farmland. This insensitivity extends to those who would sanction this greed, because in

the most part, it is greed, or self-interest for the sake of profit. I think the saying, “there is no one so blind as those who cannot see,” applies to those who have little sensitivity to the beauty and magnificence of the earth and all who inhabit it. Long range vision is needed to see where this destruction is leading us. This problem is intrinsic to the madness within our overly materialistic society. It has been said that, “competition may be the life of trade, but it is the death of spirituality.” The word “spirituality” is used here in the deepest and broadest sense. Arable land (top soil), like oil, is not renewable. Oil can be replaced by other energy sources while top soil, through erosion, ends up at the bottom of the sea or underneath cement and blacktop. In the meantime, while our population is increas-

ing, let us keep our precious small community as it is, and send a message to developers and municipal councillors that they build the infrastructure to a growing metropolis in areas where they cannot destroy existing beauty. It has been well written that, “small is beautiful.” We do not need growth in the quantitative sense but in the qualitative. Some of us have been accused of being responsible for causing stagnation. That criticism comes from measuring life solely from a materialistic point of view. Life is precious, but it seems so only to those whose sensitivity includes the totality of life and who dare to spend time cultivating good relationships, beautiful families and quiet walks in nature. These considerations cannot be ignored in an evolving community. Clayne Conings

Oil & Water show organizers get thanks Editor: I just wanted to thank everyone who worked on putting together the South Delta Artist Guild’s Oil & Water show. I have been in a few shows now, and this one

was as well-organized as any. The facility is ideal for this purpose, the logistics leading up to the opening were professional, the opening was very friendly and the food was excellent.

At the back of it all, I was particularly impressed with the way the guild has managed to reach into the local community. It is a real example of how things should be done. Jeff Wilson

Last month’s annual Chesapeake Landing Charity Golf Tournament raised $1,600 for Delta Hospital. Since 2007, Chesapeake Landing has donated the proceeds of its tournament to Delta Hospital, adding to a total of $8,000 with this year’s proceeds. The money raised will go towards hospital’s Greatest Needs Fund. The tournament saw 34 golfers take to the course and a total of 46 attend a dinner at the clubhouse, organized by Sally Phelps, one of Chesapeake Landing’s golf committee members. Co-chairs of the 2013 tournament, Don Phelps and Dave Rudberg, were happy with the event’s outcome and remarked, “We are proud of the ongoing commitment and generosity of Chesapeake residents and our sponsors to this worthy cause.” Phelps and Rudberg also wanted to express their gratitude for the support they received from Budget Foods, Riverhouse Restaurant, Tsawwassen

Crowns come to Ladner

Northwest chapter in town for 15th annual convention

The northwest chapter of the Crown Victoria Association is in town this weekend for the group’s 15th annual convention. The CVA association comprises owners of 1954 to 1956 Ford Fairlanes and Canadian Meteor cars, including Crown Victoria hard-tops, glass-tops and convertibles. According to co-organizer Tom Siddon, these brightly coloured and chrome-decorated automobiles are signature cars of the glitzy and highly competitive auto era of the 1950s. “Last year I proposed that we bring our unique collection of Crown Victoria’s to Ladner as a fitting lead-up to the great Ladner Quilt Walk and Car Show being held on Sunday, Aug. 18,” says Siddon, who was the Member of Parliament for Richmond-South Delta from 1978 to 1993. These beautifully designed cars can be seen at a Cruise-In in front of the

ADVICE FROM THE PROS QUESTION:

QUESTION:

I have been trying to find some Royal Canadian mint product from the early 2000’s. I have either not been able to find what I was looking for, or if I did find it the price was very high.

Why should I update my website? ANSWER:

ANSWER:

• People have stopped visiting and SEO strategies are not working.

Older mint product from 1980 - 1999 is fairly easy to find because they made fewer products and a larger quantity of each.

• Information on the website is wrong or obviously outdated

By 2000 the mint started issuing many more products by starting sets and series of coins and making far fewer in quantity of each. This year (2013) the mint is making 200 different items.

Jim Richardson, owner Western Coin and Stamp

I am not sure which items you are looking for but you have picked the perfect time to inquire. We just finsihed buying the largest collection of mint products I have ever seen. There was over 100 boxes villed with almost every mint item from 1995 to 2006.We are just starting to fill our cases with these items and are pricing them well below our regular retail prices. You should come on in next week to take a look and phone me, if there is a specific item you are needing.

QUESTION: What should I consider when buying an exercise bike? ANSWER: There are three types of stationary bikes that you can buy for your home or fitness facility; spin bikes, upright bikes, and recumbent bikes. If you are considering buying a stationary bike, here are a few suggestions. If you like to ride a road bike then a spin bike may be a good option for those rainy days. Spin bikes are available with optional consoles to track RPM, distance, watts, calories, etc. If you like a more comfortable upright riding position with built-in programs to chart your progress, then an upright bike may be a good option for you. The third option is a recumbent bike. These are very popular for the following reasons:

QUESTION: Our Strata Corporation has received the Depreciation report which now shows which components of the building are failing , what they will cost to repair or renovate and even replace. It also shows when these and all other components will need the funding. We have heard that Depreciation Reports are causing large increases in monthly strata fees or large special assessments which will be needed pay for unfunded portions of the Depreciation Report? ANSWER:

Daniel M. Jones CRP, AACI, P.App., FRI, CMR, RI Business Coordinator/President

As part of the depreciation plan, the consultant must provide the strata corporation with at least 3 cash flow funding models for the contingency reserve fund relating to the maintenance, repair and replacement over the next 30 years. These are only sample models for funding that will show the impact of your decisions.Your strata is not compelled to adopt any of them. If you decide to contribute only 10% of the annual budget, the model should show what your future costs will be, when they will occur, and when will you be facing special levies, likewise if you decided to increase your contributions to a greater amount. The effect of increases will reduce the impact of special levies and increase the value of your asset. The purpose of providing the models is to ensure the strata owners have credible information to make decisions when they vote at the AGM. Even if the strata corporation does not increase their funding, it will allow owners to understand future costs so they may make informed decisions on their personal long term financial planning and savings for those future levies.

QUESTION: Paul, I am concerned about the water line to my house. Should I think about replacing it, or wait till it breaks? My house is 33yrs old? I live in Tsawwassen. ANSWER: Given the age of your home, it would be a good idea to think about replacing the water service (water main), or at a minimum, start budgeting for its replacement. Over time the copper water main, buried under the soil, can start to break down especially where the soil is acidic, but more often, the copper line becomes kinked or damaged by roots from trees putting pressure on it. In either case, at some time in the near future, you are going to spring a leak. Depending on your landscaping, the replacement of the water main, can be dug by hand or machine, which involves digging a trench a minimum of 18” deep from the city supplied water service valve at the front of your yard up to the connection point within your home. An option to digging is to pull a new water service. This involves fishing a cable through your existing water line and connecting the other end to a winch which will remove the old line and install the new line at the same time. The limitation of this technique is that if you wait until your line breaks, it may be kinked, which makes it impossible to fish a cable through it. Most plumbers these days use plastic water service piping to replace water mains due to the high cost of copper. Homeowners should ask their preferred plumber to include a PRV (pressure reducing valve) and a new home shut off valve with any new water main replacement. Be proactive and call us today for a free estimate.

QUESTION: How should we choose our Renovation Specialist? ANSWER: Recommendations are usually best so ask family, friends and work associates if they've had a successful project recently. Local lumber yards and rental outlets can provide leads. Try to choose a local contractor, as we live here and can serve your needs better! Also watch for projects in your area that peak your interest and talk to us.You should interview more than one renovator, with a clear view of what you want to achieve. Ask for references and feel comfortable in asking for credentials! Are we Red Seal Certified? Are we Fully Insured, Licensed and Work Safe Compliant? MRP is all the above! Above all else GET IT IN WRITING! Ask for a written contract and save headaches! Call Mike Phillips, MRP Renovations for a free no obligation initial consultation.

Aristocats coming to Ladner

Davis and Neff team up, along with Delta kids, for performances tomorrow Jyla Davis and Tracy Neff are teaming up with more than 25 talented Delta kids to bring Disney’s Aristocats to life for two performances tomorrow in Ladner. This is not the first time these two Delta divas have joined forces. They first graced the stage together in 2000 at Theatre Under the Stars’ in their production

of South Pacific and have subsequently collaborated on numerous projects. “Aristocats seemed to be the perfect mix of Jyla and I — Jyla’s the jazzy side and I’m the needs-to-loosen-up side!” Neff laughs. The production will take place at Delta Secondary School in what has been coined the “guitar room.” “We compared all the

afternoon, according to the pair. Aristocats is a one-act kids show that runs about 30 minutes and is based on the 1970s Disney film. The cost is $5 for kids and $7 for adults and the entrance to the show is on the west side of DSS near the track. Performances will be held tomorrow at 1:30 and 3 p.m.

Man’s best friend comes along for hike in Sunshine Village BY

JANE CASSIE

Optimist contributor

There are fringe benefits for being a dog owner. As well as free kisses and pampering you get more exercise, especially when hiking the trails in Banff’s Sunshine Village. “Sorry, there’s no exception to the pet rule,” the straight-faced ticket seller says from behind the counter. “None are allowed onboard.” We’re at the base of this ski resort, a short drive

ferent. There’s no way of disguising the length, but for the most part, this incline is gradual. Healy Creek weaves in and out of our view and while canopied by evergreens we bisect the occasional blueberry field, cross a few bridges and ogle at rugged peaks that pop into the backdrop. A primitive campground dots the 5.5-km mark, a fork to Simpson Pass is just before kilometer eight and flowery meadows sprawl over the sub-alpine. While Kalli

from the town’s hub, where, for a price, a shuttle will whisk us up to the 2,195metre level (7,200 feet) to scenic ridges. But heeling politely between us, and looking up with apologetic eyes, is Kalli, our tag-along pup. “There’s another option,” my husband says, when glancing at the map. “We can hoof it all the way on foot.” I sigh at Brent’s idea, partly with frustration and partly trepidation. Can I manage the 18-kilometre round-tripper to Healy Pass? I might be OK if it was a level playing field, but the elevation gain from this parking lot is 655 metres (2,150 ft). “With all the hiking we’ve done this holiday, it’ll be a breeze,” he reassures me. It’s true and my buffed-up quads are proof. From the Kootenays to Banff, we’ve paced everything from walk-inthe-parkers like the Bow Falls Trail to mountaineer challenges such as Cory Pass. And have truly been rewarded with visual overload in return. This Healy trek ends up being no dif-

goes ga-ga over the gopher holes that burrow through this scruffy ground cover, Brent prepares for bigger game. “Three grizzlies have been tagged on this ridge,” he says, while reaching for the bear spray, “it’s unlikely

we’ll see any.” In spite of all the previous warnings we’ve had on this trip, my wrist bells go into full action. I’m soon noisier than old Saint Nick. But we safely traverse the open meadow, elevate to Healy Pass and pan the

expansive landscape. To the northeast, living up to its name, is the Massive Range, southeast is beaconlike Mt.. Assiniboine and northwest are the shimmering jewels of Scarab and Egypt Lakes. We sit and try to take it all in before mak-

ing the descent. “Going down will be easier,” Brent assures me, “We’ll even have energy for another hike tomorrow.” Kalli wags her tail in agreement. Little does she know, See HIKE page 22

HIKE from page 21 her legs will be getting a rest! We make arrangements the next morning for her to stay and play at Veronica’s, a doggy day care that’s a short drive from our Tunnel Mountain campsite. And while she’s romping with other canines, we’re tromping Sunshine’s alpine. After taking the fivekilometre bus drive from

the lower parking lot, we gain 500 metres elevation and save an hour and a half tread-time on our hiking boots. Over 12 kilometres of gravel pathway score these upper meadows. Placards along the first section reveal information about the vegetation, flora and geography. We’re welcomed to the Continental Divide, a

Rocky Mountain landmark that separates the water flow from the Atlantic to the Pacific. And we discover why so many skiers flock to this area — 10 metres of powder cloaks this terrain each year. But the growing season is nothing to write home about. Although the wildflower meadows rage with color in summer, it only lasts about 45 days. Our manicured path rises and falls as it slices through

the rugged ground cover. And while meandering over this high country we’re privy to a postcard slide show. A massive granite wall called The Monarch, the craggy summit of Mount Howard Douglas and the great Mt. Assiniboine, snow cloaked and poised like a faultless arrow-head. Some of these mountain masses harbor receded snow drifts, others wear striated agelines and a number are

At the base of Quartz Hill (five km/three miles into the trek), we enjoy a snack and serenity. “We could keep going,” Brent says, after checking his watch. “Another hour or so and we’ll be at Citadel Pass where the vistas are spectacular. What do you think?” But we both know the answer. We have to pick up our pooch by 4:30 and time is running out. “Veronica also offers overnight care.” I pipe up. “Maybe next time we’re hiking Sunshine, Kalli

would like to have a sleepover.” We hope you’ve enjoyed the past five monthly articles and tagging along with us on this holiday. By the end of this trip we hiked 150 kilometres and did a total of 40,000 feet in up and down elevation. And if we ever have a future opportunity, we’ll be back to do it all over again! Starry Night comes to Deas Island park

We’ve all heard them — the creatures that hoot, howl and squeak in the night. But this Saturday, you can get a closer look at owls, coyotes, bats and more at the annual Starry Night event at Deas Island Regional Park in Delta. Usually, the park is closed after dark, but once a year, this beautiful riverside park is opened up for a magical exploration of the night. Visitors can walk along candle-lit paths through the cottonwood trees, meet a live owl, watch bats fly from their roost in the beautiful Burrvilla heritage house and much, much more. “Starry Night is a great way to get to know more about the creatures of the night and have a lot of fun doing it,” says Lori Bartley, park interpreter for Metro Vancouver regional parks. “Whether you’re a kid who wants to play a game of pin-the-tail on the coyote or an adult who wants to learn

Robson savouring his time at home Stint playing for the Vancouver Canadians is shaping up to be a brief one for 20-year-old Ladner pitcher BY

Pacific Standard Time. Height in feet

MARK BOOTH

mbooth@delta-optimist.com

Tom Robson’s stint with his hometown professional baseball team could be over in a couple of weeks. The 20-year-old pitcher from Ladner made his second start at Nat Bailey Stadium on Wednesday night and was in excellent form in the Vancouver Canadians 10-1 win over the Everett Aquasox. The Toronto Blue Jays prospect allowed just two hits and struck out four in five innings of work before he reached his maximum 80 pitch count. In four starts since being called up from rookie league ball, the Delta secondary graduate has a 2-0 record and paltry 0.71 earned runs average (ERA). Robson is scheduled to pitch three more times until the conclusion of the Single A Short Season. He could be re-assigned to continue on in a fall instructional league or shutdown for the year. But everything is pointing to bigger challenges in his promising career. “They keep all that stuff pretty confidential,” said Robson Wednesday from his East Ladner family home. “You do a whole lot more throwing in pro ball and I can definitely tell it’s getting to the end of the season. I still feel good but I’ve been going since April. “If they do shut me down, I will take some time off and maybe go to Mexico for a holiday then get back into the grind. Robson’s made his Nat Bailey debut on Aug. 3 in front of a capacity crowd of 5,500. He pitched six innings in an 8-2 win over Hillsboro. The biggest challenge, however, was coming up with enough tickets to accommodate all his family and friends. Many more also showed up at the park, including some of his former teachers. “I gave 45 tickets to my parents and I had another 25 just for my friends,” smiled Robson. “But there must have been close to another 100 people from Ladner as well. (Laughing) There were people coming up to me afterwards that I don’t

Tom Robson has a 0.71 ERA in four starts since joining the Vancouver Canadians just over two weeks ago. even remember.” Being in a Vancouver Canadians’ uniform had been on Robson’s mind since the Blue Jays made him the number one pick from Canada in the Major League Baseball draft two years ago. As an 18-year-old fresh out of high school, the journey to get to his hometown team was not as straight forward as one might think. Robson began his career in Virginia and was enjoying a solid season until it was cut short due to soreness in his elbow. He was sent to Florida for rehabilitation then spent six weeks in a fall instructional league before another month long stint in the Dominican Republic. He was invited to extended spring training in April and was 3-0 with Bluefield before being promoted to Vancouver. “I’m definitely getting use to pro ball and understanding what it’s

like,” he continued. “Just because your Canadian doesn’t mean your going to the Vancouver Canadians. I was thinking hopefully I can pitch well in Bluefield and at least get a chance to play in my hometown once in my career. That was my whole goal while I was there. To pitch front of family and friends in a stadium I grew up in was a pretty surreal experience.” One of the biggest adjustments for Robson is working with a limited pitch count. In the B.C. Premier Baseball League with the Langley Blaze or even with the national junior team, he would typically throw between 110-120 pitches per start. Instructional league saw him work no more than two innings and he was on a 60 pitch count in Bluefield. Now his workload is 80. “You don’t want to waste pitches and make sure all of them count,” he said. “Even if I get ahead 0-2, I

BY

MAX WEDER

don’t want to throw out of the zone. I rather throw a curve ball or something competitive that could buy me an extra inning.” Robson’s arsenal includes a fastball, curveball and change-up. Since turning pro he has tinkered his grips on all three of them. His fastball has more velocity as well as movement and a sinking downward action to it. He has gone from a four to a two finger grip on his change up and he can throw a spike curveball. This off-season he wants to add a cutter or a slider. He his savouring his days of living at home and catching up with his family and friends. Typically for home games, he heads to Nat Bailey around noon and even later, if he chooses, when he starts. “I don’t want to be here next year but this something I will definitely remember for the rest of my life. It’s a special time.”

Make a difference in the lives of girls… and they’ll make a great difference in yours!

An impressive season for the Delta ’99A Heat girls fastpitch team included three tournament victories and a fourth place finish at last month’s provincial championships. Two players were also picked up to play at a recent high-profile tournament in Reno.

Heat conclude impressive season with 4th place finish at provincials

Delta Heat ’99A girls fastpitch team enjoyed a busy and successful year. This dedicated group of 13 girls from around the Lower Mainland took the gold medal in the U14A division at last month’s Surrey Storm Tournament. Prior to that, the 99A Heat celebrated four other podium finishes — winning gold in North Delta and Surrey in June, silver at the South Delta tournament in early May and bronze at the Softball City Icebreaker Tournament in April. Travelling to Seattle and Portland this season provided the team an opportunity to play some competitive softball on American soil and establish its presence south of the border. The peak of the season came at the provincials, held in late July in Maple Ridge. With crafty coaching, strong pitching and

timely batting the 99’s got as far as semifinals before losing to eventual provincial champions Ridge Meadows Pride. Right after the final game pitchers Logan Bailey and Carri-Anne Hoar left for Reno, Nevada to play for the Ridge Meadows Pride in a 150-team tournament. They faced strong US teams in the week long event — playing two games a day. A whopping five game schedule on the Saturday saw the team eventually bow out to a strong opponent from California. The Heat’s roster also includes: Chloe Cartlidge, Ashley DeGrosseilliers, Janessa Hanson, Courtney Palleson, Kheya McGill, Jayde Robertsen, Sahiba Badh, Kennedy Bonner, Arnelle Basi, Taylor Whitty and Casey Gareau. The coaches are Alex McElroy, Lyndsay McElroy and Bob Whitty.
