TFN malls on track for 2015 opening

Sewer and water situation still remains unresolved SANDOR GYARMATI

The huge shopping mall projects at the Tsawwassen First Nation are still on schedule to open in late 2015. That’s the assurance from TFN Chief Bryce Williams and TFN Economic

Development Corporation president Chris Hartman as site preparation work continues for the massive centres. “We’re currently just working on the draining process and finalizing some of the last details,” said Williams. Hartman noted over the

past few months crews have been busy bringing in fill, which is now in the process of settling. More filling is expected again this fall, he explained. Meanwhile, the longstanding issue of sewer and water servicing remains unresolved, something that obviously has to be recti-

This year Delta council endorsed a position that not only will the municipality not participate in ongoing sewer discussions between the TFN and Metro Vancouver, but also that a five-year interim sewer agreement that had initially been reached between Delta and the First Nation no longer be pursued. Delta also rejected a TFN proposal that would have transferred control of Delta’s main line to Metro Vancouver. Noting they are still working with regional district, Williams said this week there are currently no talks with Delta but that they hope to begin discussions soon with the municipality. However, the TFN is keeping all its options open, including constructing its

own wastewater treatment plant. Earlier this year, the First Nation issued a request for qualifications for firms interested in building a sewage treatment plant. According to the TFN, the value of the construction and design work is approximately $10 million to $20 million. The TFN, through provincial legislation, became a member of Metro Vancouver’s water district last year, but the Corporation of Delta has been insisting it doesn’t have the pipe capacity to accommodate the First Nation’s growth plans. It’s been a couple of years since the TFN announced it had entered into agreements with Ivanhoe Cambridge and Property Development Group to develop almost

1.8 million square feet of shopping and office space on 72 hectares (180 acres) just off Highway 17 at 52nd Street. Ivanhoe Cambridge’s project would comprise 1.2 million square feet as a destination retail and entertainment centre. Called Tsawwassen Mills, it would follow the model of the huge CrossIron Mills shopping mall north of Calgary and Vaughan Mills north of Toronto. Property Development Group is planning to develop an outdoor retail mall comprising 550,000 square feet called Tsawwassen Commons. On another front, construction has already begun on the early phases of residential developments at the TFN, which will add about 4,300 residents when completed.

Port defends habitat bank projects Controversial plan to remove wood from Boundary Bay salt marsh developed by professional biologists BY

SANDOR GYARMATI

sgyarmati@delta-optimist.com

Port Metro Vancouver wants to set the record straight about its controversial habitat compensation plan. The port is undertaking a series of measures in Delta in collaboration with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans in what is called “habitat banking.” The port authority is planning to complete the projects in order to obtain “habitat bank credits” in advance of constructing Terminal 2, a proposed three-berth container facility at Roberts Bank. The projects have drawn the ire of some, including opponents of port expansion. In particular, they are opposed to a plan for the restoration of a salt marsh at five sites in Boundary Bay and Roberts Bank, saying the work will do more harm than good. This week more than 30 people took part in a protest on the dike at the foot of 64th Street as crews began identifying logs for removal.

In response to the complaint it was interfering with a perfectly healthy environment, the port on Wednesday issued what it calls a “fact sheet” on the “myths” versus “reality.” As far as the claim Port Metro Vancouver did not consult with local authorities or key stakeholders, the port notes the Habitat Banking Program was presented to Delta council by Port Metro Vancouver CEO Robin Silvester in October 2012. “Port Metro Vancouver has been working with the Corporation of Delta staff for nearly a year. The Boundary Bay Salt Marsh Restoration Project design and plans have been developed by professional biologists and have been reviewed by DFO, MFLNRO, Nature Trust of British Columbia and Metro Vancouver. The port has also consulted with local First Nations. TFN/Matcon Joint Venture is the contractor undertaking the work,” the port states. Richmond city councillor and environmental advocate Harold Steves this week

Gord Ruffo explained Port Metro Vancouver’s habitat compensation projects to the media during a protest staged by opponents to the projects Tuesday morning in Boundary Bay. said Boundary Bay is on a sea berm, something on which the port is attempting to build a marsh. He said the port is actually interfering in the marsh building process, slowing down a process that would add new marsh habitat at Boundary Bay naturally. “Logs and wood debris have been part of the marsh building process in the Fraser River estuary since the Ice Age 10,000 years

ago. This is part of the natural succession as a mud flat turns to marsh and a marsh turns to upland. As the wood debris collects it decays and provides habitat, homes and protection for most of the small mammals, and many of the birds found in the estuary,” Steves explained on his Facebook page.

“Eventually, over a hundred-year period, it forms into a sea berm and water loving willows and small shrubs, then trees such as Pacific crabapple, along with Nootka rose and other species, start to grow on it.” However, the port responded, “When it comes to natural salt marshes, some wood is good, but not

all. In the Boundary Bay project area, anthropogenic logs have accumulated in high densities and are suppressing the growth of the salt marsh, inhibiting nutrient exchange for fish and other area wildlife. Further, some of the logs are contaminated with creosote, a toxic substance for fish and wildlife.” The port also states a construction window has been set to reduce risk of disturbance to migratory birds. The port obtained approval from the Ministry of Forests, Lands, and Natural Resource Operations because Boundary Bay is a provincial wildlife management area. Port Metro Vancouver said it has been constructing and maintaining habitat banks since 1991, also saying it will consult with regulators, First Nations and adjacent communities, as appropriate, to determine current uses for proposed habitat sites and coordinate potential opportunities.

Domestic Short Hair, Black, Neutered Male Young Adult, (Approximately 1 year old)

Edam was part of a feral cat colony we were working on (trap/spay or neuter/release program) He was being very friendly and we decided to find him a forever home with a loving family instead of releasing him back to the farm he came from. Edam is very playful and would thrive going to a home with another playful, young cat. He is still working on trust with us but is doing quite well! What a goofy little man!!! Edam falls under the PURPLE category for the Meet Your Match Program. "Purple" cats seek affection, are pretty quiet and tend to stay out of trouble. "I'm working undercover to keep an eye on you and your household. You may not even know you're under surveillance. I can vanish into thin air if anyone or anything interferes with my investigation. Worker killed after falling from Diamond ring is stolen right off elderly woman’s finger rail car on Annacis Island WorkSafeBC is investigating this week after a fatal industrial accident on Annacis Island. Spokesperson Ally Skinner-Reynolds said the report of the incident at Van Wasteco Inc. in the 900-block of Cliveden Avenue came in just after 9 p.m. Wednesday. A worker, believed to be a 43-year-old male, was seriously injured after falling off a rail car. Skinner-Reynolds said it’s believed the worker fell about 18 to 20 feet. The worker was taken to hospital but later succumbed to his injuries. WorkSafeBC’s fatal and serious incident team was on site Wednesday night and Thursday investigating the fall. Skinner-Reynolds said the cause of the incident has yet to be determined.

Delta police are asking for the public’s assistance in tracking down a stolen ring. The ring was stolen right off an elderly woman’s finger during what police are calling a “distraction theft.” At around 1 p.m. on Aug. 31, the woman was in the 7600-block of 117th Street in North Delta when a man and woman in a grey vehicle flagged her down to ask for directions. female suspect distracted the victim by placing a piece of jewelry in her hand. The suspect then grasped the woman’s left hand, removing her ring and watch in the process. The suspects then left the area before the woman realized what had happened. The missing ring is described as seven individual 0.9-carat diamonds in a cluster mounted on a wide gold band. It has sentimental value to the victim. The female suspect is described as 45 to 55 years old with medium to dark skin and long curly hair. The man is also described as 45 to 55 years old with medium to dark skin and short black hair. “This distraction theft appears to be one of several similar thefts occurring throughout the Lower Mainland in the past several months,” said Delta police spokesperson A/Sgt. TED MURPHY

MURPHY’S LAW After all the improvements that have gone into the intersection of Ladner Trunk Road and Arthur Drive, it’s a shame the all-important traffic signal hasn’t kept pace. The prohibitively expensive project that tied up traffic through the first eight months of the year was undertaken to improve both the aesthetics and functionality of the busy — at least for Ladner standards — intersection. With a new right turn lane on northbound Arthur Drive and a second left turn lane on Elliott Street, blacktop has been added in places where it’s needed in the reconfigured intersection, which has also been nicely updated from a visual perspective. The only problem is the signal that orchestrates all the traffic has been left in the past. I couldn’t help but shake my head Wednesday morning as I stood at the southwest corner waiting to cross Ladner Trunk on my way to the office. (I’m not supposed to park all day in Ladner Village any more, so most times I’m navigating this intersection on foot.) In the past, when those turning left onto Ladner Trunk from Elliott Street had the advanced green, pedestrians crossing Trunk on the west side could walk. There’s now an advanced green for those on Arthur turning left onto 47A Avenue, which makes sense, but at this particular juncture there wasn’t anyone turning, yet the green arrow was still flashing. If the goal is to more efficiently move traffic, and I’m sure it is, then the signal has to get with the times. I can’t count the number of times I’ve been stopped at the light northbound on Arthur Drive waiting for the advanced green in the other direction to time out even though there are no longer any cars making the turn. And there’s absolutely no reason why those on Arthur turning right onto Trunk from the new lane shouldn’t have a green arrow when there’s an advanced green to turn left from Trunk onto Arthur. That simple engineering practice is in place at the T-intersection of Ladner Trunk and Harvest Drive and in Tsawwassen at Highway 17 and 56th Street, among many other places, and goes a long way to keep traffic moving. Hopefully the intersection improvements aren’t complete — I didn’t think I’d be saying that after that interminable construction period — and we’ll soon get a signal that’s up to the task. After all, it doesn’t make sense to spend all that money to upgrade the intersection only to have a signal that compromises its functionality.

Taking time to appreciate the lifestyle Delta offers all of us DOUG HUSBAND

COMMUNITY COMMENT Suffice to say we live in a great time and place in Delta. In terms of climate, our moderate coastal winds and warm ocean currents are the envy of all Canadians. Delta is strategically located as a gateway to Georgia Strait and beyond, as well as the West Coast islands and our American neighbours to the south. Delta enjoyed its comfortable anonymity until the opening of the George Massey Tunnel in 1959. In ensuing years we underwent massive growth. Then there was a conscious effort to slow the pace of development and the accumulation of debt incurred as a result of the need for services and facilities for the three separate communities. To the chagrin of some, provincial and federal planning was well underway to turn Delta into a major West Coast port for coal and bulk container shipping. It’s worth

restating in 1968 and 1969 the provincial government expropriated some 4,000 acres of farmland between Ladner and Tsawwassen as back-up lands for port expansion. We are now experiencing the effect of this planning some 45 years later on our skyline and cluttered highways. We are now facing rapid change, beyond local control, from other levels of government. The significant issues affecting all of us are port expansion and the need for back-up industrial land. Inexplicably, the B.C. Liberals in recent times returned the expropriated lands to the original owners. Other factors include the historic treaty signed by the federal and provincial governments with Tsawwassen First Nation. Then there’s the scheduled opening of the South Fraser Perimeter Road this December, to be renamed Highway 17, and its impact on local traffic patterns as well as port and ferry traffic. So the pattern of change continues and hopefully we adapt and move on. Amongst all these trials and tribulations it was a pleasure to cross the iconic Westham Island Bridge to attend our family’s annual reunion hosted at Emma Lea

Farms. Crossing the wooden bridge is like returning to a century-old lifestyle, notwithstanding the modern farm operations. My family roots reach back to Delta’s incorporation in 1879. From the union of two people, we have literally hundreds of third to sixth generations of relatives able to attend this eagerly awaited event. The farm is the perfect venue for young and old to enjoy hayrides, frog jumping contests, horseshoes and the fellowship of a barbecue and old-fashioned potluck dinner with cousins, aunts and uncles. In gazing around the 100 or so present, it struck me how the family history reflects our early heritage and our present lifestyle. We emerged from families of farmers and fishermen onto those with post-secondary education, skilled trades and community minded folks, many still residing locally. We’ve been fortunate to be products of good family values and a positive living and social structure. It was good to pause a moment and appreciate the benefits of our unique lifestyle here in Delta. Have you ever experienced a sunset on Westham Island? Priceless! And a good night to you, Lois.

Editor: If I understand the bunkum of the union bosses correctly, all non-union employers are villains. I work in a non-union company and I receive a comparable wage and benefits. I have nothing to complain about. I pay enough taxes and I don’t want another parasite skimming my cheque. Labour Day should celebrate people, not increasingly irrelevant unions led by intransigent demagogues who manipulate their members, abuse their money and seek publicity for personal

aggrandizement. I wonder when each columnist actually last did an honest day of manual labour before they became full-time agitators? What exactly have unions accomplished recently, aside from contributing to the bankruptcy of Detroit? Practically nothing. Every recent labour dispute results in a continuation of the status quo — and a pittance of a pay raise — which seems pointless. In the abundant society we live in, I fail to comprehend the primordial hostility of unions. After all they

have gained, they are still angry. Notice how none of the columnists make any practical policy solutions to attract and keep industry in Canada? Instead, they complain about the cost of living. Well, acceding to unreasonable demands by public service unions do contribute to higher taxes. Ultimately, each of us must decide our own fiscal and social priorities upon which we either succeed or fail in life. The government cannot decide that for us. Steven Austin

Port project will destroy habitat, not improve it How can this be happening to the protected habitat in the Boundary Bay Wildlife Management Area? The Migratory Bird Act, the wildlife management area regulations, let alone the international designations should forbid such wanton destruction of vital habitat. Port Metro Vancouver should not be allowed on the foreshore in September,

let alone bring in equipment to destroy habitat in the Boundary Bay ecosystem at any time. Its Habitat Banking program is a farce here because Boundary Bay habitats are already protected in the Wildlife Management Area. They must be told to leave well alone immediately. Mary Taitt

Editor: Port Metro Vancouver is planning to disturb and destroy vital foreshore habitat in Canada’s most significant Important Bird Area and internationally designated Ramsar site. It plans to do it in September, in the middle of shorebird migration, along the Pacific Flyway and at the site where thousands of waterfowl are just arriving for the winter. This is outrageous. Foreshore logs at the high tide line are perches for snowy owls and other birds of prey. They are home to a vast aray of wildlife, including small mammals, especially Townsend’s vole, the key food species for many birds of prey. The nutrient release from the detritus of decaying logs feeds the foreshore wetland ecosystem; it is very basic ecology. Also recent fisheries research now recognizes the value of logs as fish habitat.

excuse. “EXIT” just doesn’t cut it. It could have been one for the Highway to Hell for all I knew. At the very least, someone in charge could have taken a hint from people who post their garage sale signs, giving clear instructions on reaching desired locations, calmly and efficiently. A large, handmade cardboard or sandwich board with “To Tsawwassen, Ladner, ferries” printed with black magic marker would have been a big improvement. It’s just a friendly suggestion to help minimize future screw-ups and ill feelings, which you can bet are still coming down the road. Geralyne Russell

lives or yelling at me further down the line. So, yes, count me in as an irate motorist. I ended up in Steveston, and to add insult to injury, there was a stall in the tunnel on the return trip. An interesting aside to that is, although the big red X was on, indicating one lane open, many trucks continued to use it, albeit at a slower pace than usual. My question: How much time did the construction company or ministry have to arrange proper signage for the new exit? Did they surprise themselves by completing that specific section so far in advance they were taken off guard and left unprepared? Have my doubts about that

Editor: Re: Don’t miss new exit or you’ll end up in tunnel, Aug. 28 Thanks for the heads up; too bad it was too little, too late. I was returning to Tsawwassen from White Rock around 1 p.m. last Tuesday. Perhaps I should have paid more attention to the warning, “Abandon hope, all ye GPS users,” but thought I could find my way home without help. Next thing I knew, there was a sign saying “EXIT.” pointing to a freshly paved road, which at that moment, had no other vehicles on it. Sherwin keeping issue alive as he seeks school bus solution Editor: Over the past summer, many parents from Boundary Bay have been scrambling to set up some sort of regular and reliable transportation for our children to attend school at either South Park Elementary or South Delta Secondary. As you are aware, the school bus transportation has recently been terminated for students of these two schools, as well as others in Delta. For many of us this would not pose a problem, as older students can potentially walk, take transit, cycle or perhaps carpool, if enough parents can partake.

For some reason, however, there is no public bus running up Boundary Bay Road between 7:20 a.m. and 9:20 a.m., and therefore this is not an option. Also, there are no sidewalks on Boundary Bay Road, being particularly narrow on some corners, and hazardous for all pedestrians and cyclists. Yes, there is the alternate dike trail, but even this old broad finds it a bit treacherous and a little scary to ride in the dark as part of my regular commute. I’m sure few parents of younger students would feel comfortable sending their children the five kilometres on any of these three routes.

Lucky for us, the ‘Bay has Brad Sherwin, who continues to work endlessly with parents, the school board, Corporation of Delta, TransLink and the provincial government to search for a transportation solution for these students and families. Although Coun. Bruce McDonald and school board chair Laura Dixon have finally come on board to assist, if it weren’t for Sherwin, I’m sure the issue would have died a quiet death. Thank you, Brad, your efforts are greatly appreciated. Tara Johnson

Bra Burning Party benefits Mexican cancer clinic Editor: We wish to thank everyone who took part in making the third annual Bra Burning Party another great success. You collected 200 bras and over $700 for the Cancer de Mama Clinic in La Penita, Mexico The clinic is a work of love, started by a Canadian

Breast Cancer survivor in 1996. Working out of her home, she provided bras and prostheses to the women of Nayarit. The clinic was moved to the La Penita RV Park in 2009 where it has served a greater number of women. In 2013, 567 women with breast cancer were provided

with services. In particular, we thank the generosity of our neighbours in the South Point complex, especially the ones from Jibset Bay, who supplied power, chairs and tables as well as delicious food. See you all again next year. Ian & Marlyn Ferguson

Mid-year numbers show rise in container volume BY

SANDOR GYARMATI

sgyarmati@delta-optimist.com

Domestic and foreign container volumes continue to increase, according to mid-year numbers from Port Metro Vancouver. The port authority last week released its mid2013 figures indicating new records in key sectors, including cargo volumes that show Port Metro Vancouver handled 66.4 million tonnes through the end of June. According to the port, total foreign tonnage at Port Metro Vancouver posted a seven per cent increase with 52.7 million tonnes handled, while total domestic tonnage also increased over last year by three per cent to 13.7 million tonnes. The mid-year throughput volumes reflect continuing demand for high quality Canadian commodities by Asian economies as well as strength in the Canadian economy, president and CAO Robin Silvester said in a news release. “What we have seen to

the mid-point in 2013 is continuing strong demand for Canadian natural resources, with all the major economic benefits that provides for the local and national economy,” he said. Meanwhile, the port authority continues the process of updating its land use plan, as well as work on a formal application for an new three-berth terminal at Roberts Bank, called Terminal 2 (T2), to be built adjacent to the existing Deltaport container facility. Silvester told the Optimist refined details of the new land use plan are out for yet another round of consultation, a process that he expects to finally wrap up early next year. As far as T2, he said an application would be submitted to government this fall. A number of field studies have already been done and habitat restoration projects are now underway. It’s not clear at this time whether all three T2 berths will be constructed at the same time when the new

container facility would open around 2021, or whether they would be built in phases. Noting Deltaport is already reaching 75 per cent capacity, and the port may need all the additional capacity sooner than later, Silvester said it will all depend on growth rates over the next couple of years. Helping meet additional capacity needs in the short term is the Deltaport Road and Rail Improvement Project, he said, but there’s no question T2 will be needed to meet an everincreasing demand. “If we grow at this rate over the three or four we had projected, we’ll need all that additional capacity right away at Terminal 2 as well as the expansion of (port of) Prince Rupert,” Silvester added. PMV notes current projections indicate approximately four million TEUs (20-foot equivalent units) of additional capacity will be needed to meet West Coast container demand by 2030, double current volumes.

SUNDAYS, 10 AM Worship & Christian Education “All are warmly welcomed to worship

Instilled values Two pharmacists recently asked me, “Are you from the South?” and “Did you come from a military family?” My answers were, “Yes, sir” and “Yes, ma’am.” Apparently, my use of sir and ma’am is fairly distinctive. When I say the phrases, I never really think about it, but it is a byproduct of how I was raised. In my household, you used the terms to show respect (even when you felt they didn’t deserve it) to those in authority or just older than you. It was a lesson they instilled in my siblings and I and one not soon forgotten. Proverbs 22:6 says, “Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart

from it.” This week was the first week of school for many, and it is another year where our children are closer to leaving home. Two of our youth at the church are starting their first year at university; they will go and become their own person, just as I did when I was their age. I know during that time of growth I made some mistakes, but in the end I remembered what my parents taught me. I am still my own man, different from my parents, but I still hold many of the same values that I was taught, just as these two youth, or rather young adults, will remember the teachings of their parents.

Earthwise hosts Tomato Festival

They’re striped! They’re orange! They’re big and juicy and red! They are Earthwise Society’s fabulous assortment of organic heirloom tomatoes, ready for sampling at this year’s Tomato Festival. The Tomato Festival, set for the Earthwise Farm and Garden in Boundary Bay on Saturday, Sept. 14 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., offers something for the whole family, with live music, food and cooking demonstrations, and a children’s activity area. The third annual Tomato Festival celebrates the 35 varieties of heirloom tomatoes expertly tended by Earthwise master gardeners Graham and Maja Willoughby. It is an opportunity to taste test and choose favourites, try them out on freshly baked cob oven pizza and talk to the experts to learn how it’s all done. There will be cooking

demonstrations by Wes Levesque, who will share his secrets for bringing out the best in local tomatoes. Then wander over to the patio garden and enjoy some music. Heirloom tomatoes are older varieties that have been grown historically in different regions of the world. Most are no longer widely available. Today, plant collectors save and grow seeds from these antique varieties partly to help preserve the world’s genetic diversity but also to celebrate the variations of taste and colour of this diverse fruit. For many people, biting into a ripe, fresh-off- thevine heirloom tomato is a revelation: this is what tomatoes used to taste like. The Earthwise Farm and Garden are located at 64003rd Ave in Tsawwassen. For more information on the festival, visit www. earthwisesociety.bc.ca or call 604-946-9828.

Honouring Terry Fox Annual South Delta run set for next Sunday BY

JESSICA KERR

jkerr@delta-optimist.com

More than 30 years ago, Terry Fox began his now iconic Marathon of Hope across the nation to raise money for cancer research. One year after his journey ended abruptly just outside Thunder Bay, Ontario, after he learned his cancer had returned and spread to his lungs in September 1980, the first Terry Fox Run was held in more than 750 communities across Canada. Today, the annual event is held in countless Canadian towns and cities, as well as in more than 20 countries around the world, and raises millions of dollars for cancer research. Sept. 15 and here in South Delta organizers are gearing up for another year raising money for cancer research and honouring Fox’s legacy. “We hope that people will come out and celebrate Terry Fox,” said Leslie Abramson, one of the organizers of the event, which is put on annually by the Rotary Club of Tsawwassen. “We’re proud of the legacy that he left behind.” The South Delta Terry Fox Run includes both five and 10-kilometre routes, both of which begin and end in the parking lot of the Tsawwassen Town Centre Mall. Both routes are open for walkers, runners and rollers. Dogs are welcome, as long as they are leashed. In addition to the run, there will

Abramson encourages all South Deltans to get out and run, walk or roll to honour Fox’s memory. “We’re a healthy community and this is such a good cause,” she said. Market bids farewell to another summer BY

JESSICA KERR

jkerr@delta-optimist.com

As summer winds to a close, so does another successful season for the Ladner Village Market. “The market was phenomenal,” said Tracey McKnight, one of the organizers. “We were very pleased.” The annual open-air market wraps up its 17th season this Sunday. The market spans three blocks on 48th Avenue in Ladner Village, from Elliott Street to Delta Street, and will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. McKnight said while the market has hosted many of its tried and true vendors again this year, there have also been a lot of new faces. “It’s always nice to add some freshness to our market,” she said. Throughout the summer,

and continuing on Sunday, vendors offer everything from produce and plants to art and jewelry. In addition to shopping, the market offers its thousands of visitors a chance to grab a bite to eat at one of the many food vendors and enjoy some live entertainment. On the bill for the final market of the year is Mojo Zydeco. No stranger to the Ladner Village Market, Mojo Zydeco is described as “the R&Bbased grooves of Black Creoles.” The market isn’t just a draw for locals as it has become a destination for many in the region. “We have people coming from all over,” McKnight said, listing off a slew of locations from around the region, including Vancouver Island, Abbotsford and the North Shore. “It’s been a wonderful season,” she said.

Delta Nature hosting casual bird walk Residents invited to join in and see a variety of birds throughout Boundary Bay

Delta Nature is hosting a casual birding walk around Boundary Bay next week. Tom Bearss, president of the Delta Naturalists’ Society, and his band of informal birdwatchers invite interested residents to join the group for a two-and-a-half-hour amble next Wednesday. The walk will give the group a chance to see a variety of resident birds and some that are just passing through Delta during fall migration, including shorebirds, waterfowl, raptors and smaller birds. The outing will end with a beverage and snack at Cammidge House. The walk starts at 9 a.m. at Cammidge House in Boundary Bay Regional Park in Tsawwassen. The event is free and there is a voluntary donation for snacks. For more information, email tom.bearss@dccnet.com.

Who Can Ride a Horse? Everyone!

At 5, some children are ready for more formal riding lessons. At this stage, children are taught on ponies that are under the direct control of the coach, while they learn to balance, and learn basic pony commands. Riding lessons for little ones are arranged to suit your schedule, and there is a special time reserved for “Horse Crazy Kids” on Sundays from 3-4, by appointment. These sessions include learning basic pony care, and a mini lesson or pony ride. A package of 3 sessions is only 99.00 and you can redeem your 3 lessons over a whole year’s time. Once your child is confident, riders aged 7 to 9 can join our “Little Riders” groups. Instruction is in small groups, allowing for social interaction as well as pony time! Making friends is one of the big reasons kids stay active in sport, so it is an important part of programs at Crescent. For kids that prefer individual instruction, private lessons are available..…but prime after school spots can fill fast! Teen riders are an important part of our programming. Some teens are just beginning to ride, others are mentors that have been riding for many years, and some are in our Junior Coaching program, preparing for their exams. As a Coach Evaluator for Equine Canada, our National group for Equestrian Sport, I am aware of the importance of the hours of practice it takes to be successful in those exams, so our Junior Coaches are involved in helping with Spring Break and Summer Camps, assisting with lessons, and caring for the horses. Some of our teen riders are also busy in

Who else rides? Often we get calls from people heading out on a riding holiday and they want a refresher, or to take some basic instruction before a trail riding holiday. We have also had someone come for their 90th birthday, as they had always wanted to ride a horse and had not yet done so! Is it just women and girls who ride horses? Nope! In fact, we have an increasing number of men who are taking lessons at Crescent. Interestingly, although some of the top Canadian and American Olympic riders are men, riding schools in North America have larger numbers of girl and women riders. It seems that is starting to change, and we may soon see more equal number, as in other parts of the world. Did you know that Equestrian events are the only Olympic sports in which men and women compete with each other? Teams are made up of the best riders and horses, regardless of the gender of the rider!

03207000

Although formal lessons do not start until 5, younger children may enjoy a pony ride. Or not! Keen kids sometimes balk at getting near the ponies when the ponies are no longer plastic or animated. Try again a week later, and they don’t want to get off the pony, and want the pony to come home in the car.

What about the grownups? At Crescent, we have a balance of both children and adults riding. Some riders are part of our “Back in the Saddle” groups, which are riders that have returned after getting their careers and families underway. Some of our adult riders are long term competitive riders as well, who have been at Crescent longer than I have been at Crescent! For adults just starting out, we have “Beginner Adult” packages that include lessons and practice rides, so you can review your skills on your own. For keen riders, we have the “Pro-Rider” package, which includes dressage and jumping lessons, as well as practice rides.

Food prep key to clean eating Preparing ingredients ahead of time makes sticking to a healthy diet easier training dirty an easy process to add to their lives. Eating clean, however, takes a bit of prep. For as long as we both can remember, we have been using Sunday as our prep day for the week ahead. It is a habit now, and the routine is as natural to us as rolling out of bed. Through the years, we have learned some valuable lessons on how to prep successfully, and would like to share with you the “Art of Food Prep.”

t Go Fit Gals, our motto is to eat clean and train dirty. What exactly does that mean, you wonder? Well, to eat clean, we want you to eat real foods, as close to nature as you can. Eliminate the packaged, ready-to-eat convenience meals whose ingredients read more like a Grade 9 science project gone wrong. To train dirty is to simply open your mind to the possibilities of what you can do, instead of what you can’t. Challenge yourself to see the change you want to see. We find most of our members and clients find

Plan ahead Take a look through your cookbooks and jot down what you want to make for each meal. Write it where you can easily see it throughout the week, so when you come home, tired and exhausted after work, you can’t discourage yourself out of healthy meal and grab the phone for take-out.

Plan wisely Don’t think about doing a new dish every night, or a new lunch every day. Double up batches and have leftovers for lunch, or freeze for the following weeks. Prep-worthy meals Find recipes in your cookbooks that are also prep-worthy. A prep-worthy meal is one you can both make ahead and keep in the fridge to serve when you want it (like steel-cut oats), or a recipe you can prepare the individual parts for and combine together on the day of cooking (such as pre-cutting your veggies for that slow cooker stew you plan on having). Try one new recipe every week. It can get too easy to fall into the habit of eating the same foods, week in and week out. Cycle your foods the same way you would cycle your exercises. Give

Only warmer climate, not fertilizer, will help fruit ripen Readers’ gardening questions answered anne marrison

Green Room This week I answer a couple of questions from readers: Q: My container fig tree is about three to four years old with about a dozen and a half figs that are smallish, hard and showing no signs of ripening. Could you suggest a fertilizer to help fruit ripen? I am planning to root-prune and top-cut it next February and repot it in the same container. A: There’s no fertilizer that can help figs ripen. Figs come from warmer climates where they easily ripen two crops a year. Your non-ripening figs belong to this second, later crop. Our cooler climate doesn’t give these figs enough time to finish growing and ripen before cold weather arrives. It’s the first crop figs that ripen easily in this climate. These are formed the previ-

and/or a lack of calcium. It may be too late to correct it this year if your tomatoes are outside, but you could certainly try to gently scratch some lime around your tomato plants. It wouldn’t be too late for greenhouse tomatoes. It’s also important to make sure your tomato soil is gently moist all the time. Next year dig some Dolomite lime into your future tomato bed. The alkalinity of the lime counteracts acid soil and adds calcium. Also next year retain moisture by adding manure or compost into your planting holes and mulch the plants. As for your ornamental allium, some have an extremely short bloom time. My guess is your allium was in very dry soil and flowered in a blistering hot spell. That guarantees the blooms wouldn’t last long. Anne Marrison is happy to answer garden questions. Send them to her via amarrison@shaw.ca.

Death Dying

A feature including information on: estate planning, palliative care, bereavement & funeral services, nursing care and much more.

Family-centered approach to care Delta Hospice programs recognize that individuals deal with stress, grief differently Looking after a family member with a terminal illness and coping with their death puts a huge amount of stress on the family system. Any loss within a family will undoubtedly affect others. When families are in crisis, they may feel imprisoned by the disease process, as though their real lives are suspended by the looming, all-consuming presence of illness and dying. Some say when one person in the family has cancer, the whole family has cancer. This may not be literally true, but what is true is the impact of illness and the impact of grieving echoes throughout the entire family.

The process of adjusting to such an event can have both negative and positive outcomes. However, there is often a lengthy period of adjustment as family members navigate the transition of a loss that impacts everybody as individuals and the dynamic of the family as a whole. At Delta Hospice Society’s Centre for Supportive Care in Ladner, the goal is to provide the support and tools to help individuals and families meet the ever-changing and complex needs that are characteristic of this experience. Counsellors endeavour to respect and restore people’s sense of control and self-

Families have come to this illness from lives already filled with challenges and triumphs and the wisdom and knowledge gained from those past experiences will be a great

help through this time. Coping tends to be much better in families who are more cohesive, more open with emotional sharing, more supportive to each other, have more external

support (friends/extended family) and are more active in problem-solving. However, even in “healthy” families, communication around illness, loss and grief experiences can be very difficult. Typically, family members tend to protect one another and are reluctant to share their pain. There are many different grieving styles and responses within a family and it is rare for everyone to be on the same page. Children, in particular, have different ways of coping with loss and grief than adults. A child’s response to grief is intimately intertwined with their family’s response to grief. Programs at the Harold

& Veronica Savage Centre for Supportive Care offer a family-centered approach to care. Central to this approach are the principles of viewing the patient within the context of his/ her family, empowering families, providing social supports, building relationships with families, building communication skills and maintaining effective communication. In a family-centered model of care, professionals work collaboratively with families to address their loved one’s needs. For more information about the family centered programs offered at the Centre for Supportive Care, call 604-948-0660.

Advance care plan outlines wishes

Advance care planning begins by thinking about your beliefs, values and wishes regarding future health care treatment. It is about having conversations with your close family, friends and health care provider(s) so they know the health care treatment you would agree to, or refuse, if you become incapable of expressing your own decisions. When you write down your wishes and instructions for future health care, you are making an advance care plan, which is a written summary of a capable adult’s wishes or instructions to guide a substitute decision maker if that person is asked by a physician or other health care provider to make a health care treatment decision on behalf of the adult. Your advance care plan can also include: • A representation agreement where you write your instructions and name someone to make your health and personal care decisions if you become

incapable. • An advance directive with your instructions for health and personal care that are given to your health care provider, which he/she must follow directly when it speaks to the care you need at the time. • An enduring power of attorney where you appoint someone to make decisions about your financial affairs, business and property. Steps to creating your advance care plan: • Have family conversations about your beliefs, values and wishes. Every advance care plan starts with conversations between you and your trusted family members or friends. It may feel hard to get started, but usually the people who care about you will understand the need for these conversations. • Decide what health care treatments you will or won’t accept, and note them. It’s important to think about when you might want to accept life-supporting interventions — measures like breathing machines or

feeding tubes. You should also think about when you might prefer not to have life support or life-prolonging interventions. • Gather the contact information for the people who could be individually asked to be your temporary substitute decision maker if a health care decision is needed for you. If you have many adult children, or if you would rather have your friend, not your brother for example, be asked to make health care decisions for you, then you can choose the person you want to decide for you by naming them as your representative in a legally binding representation agreement. • Put your advance care plan in a safe, accessible place for the people who may need it. If you have a chronic health condition, if you engage in high-risk activities or even if you’re just marking a significant birthday, you should have an advance care plan. You can change your advance care plan at any time as long as you remain capable.

Big changes coming for will legislation

The Society of Notaries Public of B.C. welcomes provincial government legislation regarding the Wills, Estates and Succession Act. The act will provide greater certainty for individuals who put their last wishes into writing and it will simplify the work of the executors of the estate. The Ministry of Justice has announced this act and new probate rules will be effective March 31, 2014. They represent the most extensive changes to this area of law in 85 years. “We are delighted with this new legislation,” said John Eastwood, a Ladnerbased notary and president of the Society of Notaries Public of B.C. “B.C. notaries have advocated for and supported efforts for clearer and more consistent processes for wills and estate planning and for the trustees responsible for distributing an estate.” The Ministry of Justice has indicated the new act includes the following benefits:

Death is inevitable.

Will makes it easier

Every adult who owns assets or has a spouse or young children should have a will. Surprisingly, many people don’t have one. The few hours you spend with a lawyer planning your estate could save your spouse, children and other beneficiaries much time, effort and money. By not having a will, you lose control over who gets how much of your estate and when. You also give up the right to appoint a guardian of your choice for any young children. And the costs to administer your estate will be drastically increased. In a will, you can name an executor to manage your

estate when you die. The executor is often a relative, friend or other trusted person. You can also name a guardian to look after any infant children. But if you die without a will, someone must be appointed by the court to manage your estate. This person is called an administrator. Your spouse is the first person who can apply to administer and handle your estate. If you have no spouse or if your spouse is unwilling or unable to be the administrator, then a relative can apply. person could apply to be the administrator. This may include a friend or a professional such as a lawyer or accountant. The Public Guardian and Trustee — as official administrator for the province of B.C. — might also apply to administer your estate if, for example, no one else is willing to take on the task. If you die without a will, B.C.’s Estate Administration Act dictates how your estate will be divided. It sets out the following rules: • If you own a home, your spouse will have the right to use it for life. This is called a “life interest” and can tie up the estate. • Your spouse receives the first $65,000 of your estate. Then if you have children, your spouse and children share what’s left — equally if you have one child, and if you have more than one child, then onethird to the spouse and the remainder equally to your children. Ice Hawks host rivals to open PIJHL season

Delta Ice Hawks and Richmond Sockeyes will renew their rivalry Tuesday night in Ladner to open the Pacific International Junior Hockey League regular season with plenty of new faces at both ends of the rink. The Sockeyes begin the 2013-14 campaign as defending PIJHL, Cyclone Taylor (B.C.) and Keystone Cup (Western Canadian) champions after a memorable playoff run last spring. Their biggest test happened to be a second round series against the Ice Hawks that went seven games. Both clubs have lost key players to graduation and higher tiers of junior hockey. The Ice Hawks are minus their top three scorers from a year ago, including 20-year-old league scoring champion Mak Barden who has signed with Alberni Valley of the B.C. Hockey league after a strong showing as a playoff call-up last season. Delta will be relying on returning veterans Tanner Gattinger and newly-appointed capatin Marc Letourneau to lead the way offensively. The back-end includes Alex Anhert, the league’s top goalie a year ago, along with veteran blueliners David Rudin and Daniel Delblanco. Tuesday’s game will also be debut of new head coach Roger Ross while Judd Lambert returns behind the Sockeyes bench after a one-year hiatus. Lambert, a Ladner resident, enjoyed plenty of success with Richmond before stepping away to spend more time with his young family. Game time is 7:30 p.m.

Paxton makes MLB debut Saturday Family and friends heading down I-5 to Safeco Field as Ladner pitcher gets start against Tampa Bay BY

MARK BOOTH

mbooth@delta-optimist.com

The drive to watch their son play professional baseball just got shorter for the Paxtons and this time it will be on the game’s biggest stage. James Paxton will have at least 100 family and friends in the stands at Safeco Field on Saturday night when the lefty from Ladner makes his Major League Baseball debut in a starting role against the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. The 24-year-old was pitching for the Ms Triple-A affiliate in Tacoma last Sunday when he was pulled after two innings to learn he had been promoted to the big club. His parents had made the trek down I-5 to watch their son pitch at Cheney Stadium. Paxton was able to invite them into the clubhouse to tell

Call Dean: 604.943.7411 604.946.1688

them the good news himself. “We saw his teammates giving him hugs (in the dugout) so we knew something was cooking,” said his father Ted Paxton. “The first thing I thought I when he told me was all those hours throwing (at nearby) Leslie Park when he was 12 years-old because this is where he wanted to be one day. “It is going to be very special.” Paxton has spent the entire season in Tacoma where he had put together an 8-11 record, in 28 James appearances, with a 4.45 earned run average. With all-star Hisashi Iwakuma having a limited role for the balance of the season, Paxton will be part of

a six-man rotation. He should get at least one more start at Safeco before the end of the season. The Delta secondary graduate grew up in the Ladner Minor Baseball system before heading to the B.C. Premier League where he flourished with the North Delta Blue Jays under manager Ari Mellios. He earned a full-ride scholarship to the University of Kentucky where he put together three impressive seasons. He was selected 37th overall by the Toronto Blue Paxton Jays in the 2009 MLB Draft but did not sign with the club. After a year of independent ball, Paxton was selected again in the

2010 draft, this time in the fourth round by the Mariners. He enjoyed an impressive 2012 campaign with the Ms’ Double-A affiliate in Jackson. Extra innings.... A special week for Ladner baseball players also included Tom Robson pitching the Vancouver Canadians to a playoff win on Tuesday night. Robson, 20, worked five innings and surrendered just one run as the Canadians erupted for four runs in the sixth to break a 1-1 deadlock in a 5-1 win over the Everett Aquasox. Vancouver also defeated Everett Wednesday to advance to the Single-A Short Season Northwest League championship series. Since being promoted to Vancouver, Robson has a 3-0 record and a 0.94 ERA with 29 strikeouts in 38 innings pitched.

Pacers in the market for new basketball coaches Matt McKay steps down from DSS senior varsity team to accept assistant coaching position with SFU men’s team BY

MARK BOOTH

mbooth@delta-optimist.com

The up-and-coming boys basketball program at Delta secondary school suddenly has two significant coaching vacancies. On the heels of junior varsity coach Scott Masse taking a leave of absence from teaching, senior varsity coach Matt McKay has accepted an assistant position with the SFU men’s

team. McKay will continue to teach at the Ladner high school but, under strict NCAA recruiting rules, cannot be involved in the basketball program under any capacity. He will assist DSS athletic director Shell Thompson and school administration with finding the right candidates to guide both teams. The hope is that process is completed by the end of September with the senior

team slated to take part in a fall league based out of Tamanawis secondary. “Right now we are not sure at this point,” said McKay. “There are people in the community who have been involved in the program in the past that I’m sure they will be looking at to step up again. It’s not up to me to decide when they should come in.” Led by U17 Team B.C. post Ryan Cowley and

senior guards Andrew Jones and Bowen Bakken, the Pacers are expected to make a serious run for a rare provincial berth at the new AAAA level. McKay finalized the 2013-14 schedule months ago with a number of high-profile exhibition games and tournaments against top 10 ranked opponents. “It’s a little bittersweet,” McKay continued. “Despite looking forward to a suc-

cessful high school season, the opportunity to coach NCAA basketball, in Canada, and in a conference as strong as the GNAC was too good to pass up. “This is a great opportunity for me to work under a fantastic head coach and with a great coaching staff, which I know will help me both grow professionally as well as provide me with a competitive challenge unparalleled in British Columbia. McKay was head coach with the Kwantlen University women’s basketball team in 2010-11 and has also held various coaching positions with

Basketball B.C. His addition to the Clan men’s basketball coaching staff builds on his family ties to SFU, as McKay’s father played football for the Clan in the 1970s. His major focus will be on player development, assisting in day to day operations with practice and game preparation. “Matt is a very respected coach that has worked at the high school and collegiate level,” said SFU head coach James Blake. “He has great recruiting connections in the province and he will help SFU land some top notch talent out of B.C.”

Guaranteed Lowest Prices *Applies only to our major supermarket competitors’ print advertisements (i.e. flyer, newspaper). We will match the competitor’s advertised price only during the effective date of the competitor’s print advertisement. Our major supermarket competitors are determined solely by us and are based on a number of factors which can change from time to time. Identical items are defined as same brand, item type (in the case of produce, meat and bakery), size and attributes and carried at this store location. We will not match competitors’ “multi-buys” (eg. 2 for $4), “spend x get x”, “Free”, “clearance”, discounts obtained through loyalty programs, or offers related to our third party operations (post office, gas bars, dry cleaners etc.). We reserve the right to cancel or change the terms of this promise at any time.

We Match Prices! *Look for the symbol in store. WE RESERVE THE RIGHT TO LIMIT QUANTITES (note that our major supermarket competitors may not). Due to the fact that product is ordered prior to the time of our Ad Match checks, quantities may be limited. We match select items in our major supermarket competitors’ flyers throughout the week. Major supermarket competitors are determined solely by us based on a number of factors which can vary by store location. We match identical items (defined as same brand, size, and attributes) and for fresh produce, meat and bakers, we match a comparable item (as determined solely by us).
