Delta Ice Hawks goalie Alex Anhert makes one of his 50 saves as his team opened the junior “B” hockey season Tuesday night with a 4-4 tie against the Richmond Sockeyes at the Ladner Leisure Centre.

South Deltans will help keep the memory alive by taking part in the annual Terry Fox Run this Sunday. The local run includes five and 10-kilometre routes, both of which begin and end in the parking lot of the Tsawwassen Town Centre Mall. The event, once again organized by the Rotary Club of Tsawwassen, is open to walkers, runners and rollers. Dogs are welcome, as long as they are leashed. Registration starts at 8:30 a.m. and the walk/run/roll begins at 10 a.m. • See story on Page 23.

Transportation remains a top issue for Deltans, and their concerns are growing, according to the results of a citizen satisfaction survey conducted for the municipality earlier this year. A staff report to Delta council this week highlighted some of the findings of the poll conducted by

Ipsos Reid between May 16 and June 9. A random sample of 300 residents, aged 18 and over, was asked by telephone their thoughts on municipal services. They were also asked what they feel are the most important issues facing Delta. As with the previous three surveys, transportation was the top issue for 44 per cent of respon-

dents, which is up from 31 per cent in 2010 and higher than the municipal norm of 27 per cent. A report from Sean McGill, Delta’s director of human resources and corporate planning, notes that most of the concerns are related to traffic congestion. The second most important issue is growth and development, See SURVEY page 3

Farmers look to weather future Delta is one of three areas in B.C. devising strategies to help agricultural producers adapt to changing climate BY

DAVE WILLIS

dwillis@delta-optimist.com

Farmers are accustomed to dealing with challenging weather, but the scale and scope of changes in the climate are projected to exceed anything they’ve experienced in the past. A new pilot project from the B.C. Agriculture and Food Climate Action Initiative, with participation from local partners, has developed a series of strategies to increase the resilience of Delta’s agriculture sector in a changing climate. “As an industry, we need to boost our resilience,” said Rhonda Driediger, chair of the B.C. Agriculture Council. “But because B.C. agriculture is so diverse, we need support from all levels of government, including local and regional, to enhance our sector.” With most of its farmland less than two metres above sea level, risk of coastal flooding was identified as a significant vulnerability in Delta. “We recognize that we need to further analyze the impacts of a sea level rise so that we can make more informed decisions,” said dairy producer Jerry Keulen, a member of Delta’s Agricultural Advisory Committee. “One

of our strategies includes partnering with neighbouring local governments to study the economic and social impacts [of storm surge flooding].” Flooding is not the only issue, said Delta Farmers’ Institute president Dave Ryall. Another is making sure

SURVEY from page 1 which was mentioned by 35 per cent of respondents. That number is higher than previous years — it came in at 29 per cent in 2010 — and well above the municipal norm of 12 per cent. The survey found that most are happy with life in Delta as 99 per cent of respondents rated the quality of life as “good” or “very good.” “When asked what has improved in the last three years, respondents pointed to road improvements, growth/development, low crime rate and good recreation amenities,” McGill said in his report. Those who reported a

worsened quality of life cited traffic congestion, demographic changes, growth/development, environmental issues, poor infrastructure and lack of public transit. The Corporation of Delta also scored high with 82 per cent reporting being “very” or “somewhat” satisfied with municipal government (council and administration) and 93 per cent reporting being “very” or “somewhat” satisfied with municipal services. Fire and police services both came in at 93 per cent, and public works ranked slightly lower this year at 81 per cent, compared to 88

work with Delta’s producers to ensure that Delta’s agriculture sector continues to thrive in the future,” said Mayor Lois Jackson. The project was made possible due to funding from the federal and provincial governments, the Pacific Institute for Climate Solutions and in-kind support from the Corporation of Delta. The Cowichan Valley Regional District and Peace River Regional District also participated in the pilot project. The three regional strategies are available online through the B.C. Agriculture & Food Climate Action Initiative at: www. bcagclimateaction.ca/adapt/ regional-strategies/. “The high priority topics, strategies and actions identified in these adaptation strategies will be very important for the long term sustainability of our sector in these regions,” said Driediger. “BCAC would like to see implementation of the identified actions and similar studies completed for all agricultural areas in B.C.” The B.C. Agriculture and Food Climate Action Initiative was established by the B.C. Agriculture Council in 2008. It is led by an advisory committee of producers, processors and government agencies.

farmers have enough fresh water for irrigation. He said farmers get water out of the Fraser River to help irrigate during the summer. Depending on the flow of the river, salt water could prevent access to the fresh water. “I guess they think there might be less snow pack. If

there’s less snow pack that means less fresh water coming down the Fraser River and that means when we get high tides, the ocean, the salt water is going to go further up the river,” he said. Another issue is potential change in seasonal rainfall patterns and if that could

per cent in 2010. When asked about value for tax dollars, 83 per cent said they consider the services provided by Delta to be “very good” or “fairly good” value, a slight reduction from 87 per cent in previous surveys but higher than the municipal norm of 80 per cent. According to the report, 43 per cent said they would rather see an increase in taxes than cuts to services, while 17 per cent would pay more to expand services. On the other hand, 40 per cent would prefer to cut services to maintain the current tax levels, while 10 per cent would like to see reduced taxes and services. The survey cost the municipality $10,700.

Development came in second when residents were asked to name the most important issue facing Delta. Thirty-five per cent of respondents had it as their top issue, almost triple the municipal norm of 12 per cent.

Mayor not a fan of TransLink’s new Compass card system

Serving South Delta for over 30 years

It’s the worst service she’s ever seen, Mayor Lois Jackson said about TransLink’s Compass card scheme. The longtime civic politician didn’t like what she heard during Delta council’s recent discussion about the unelected transit authority’s pre-paid card program, which doesn’t allow people who pay in cash to get on a bus to use a transfer to board the rail network. “I’m simply saying there are circumstances when one person wants to take a bus on occasion to a SkyTrain into Vancouver, and how does he do that without costing him much more? Prepaying may be good for some people but not for everybody,” Jackson said. The mayor was responding to a letter submitted by a North Delta resident who noted transit users who pay a cash fare on a bus will have to pay a second fare to get onto the SkyTrain at

FILE PHOTO

Vancouver-bound transit users will soon have to pay two separate cash fares if they don’t have a pre-loaded Compass card. Scott Road or Bridgeport stations. Saying it offers both convenience and efficiency, TransLink’s soon-to-be implemented Compass card program requires transit users to pay in advance if they want to transfer from a bus to SkyTrain. Riders paying by cash will be forced to pay another fare for SkyTrain. Jackson made it clear that she isn’t keen on South Deltans, who already lost their direct bus service to Vancouver when TransLink began funneling them to the Canada Line, having to pay twice if they don’t buy a card and load it.

The cost of upgrading bus fare boxes to issue Compass cards or tickets would cost about $25 million, according to TransLink. The transit authority also notes the new system will only impact about 6,000 customers per day out of 1.2 million daily rides. Jackson, however, remained unconvinced. “Even in China they can do this. I went to the Beijing airport and I put my transfer in a slot and it pops back up again. You hang onto it if you want to get onto the next stop, you put it in again,” Jackson said. “But here in Canada

we have to have something that I find quite outrageous, loading up a card and prepaying. Once again, we are being represented by people that are not elected.” Noting that riders can purchase single-ride amounts to transfer from bus to train, Coun. Bruce McDonald said he was outraged at first as well, but now has a different point of view after reading an editorial explaining the benefits of the program. He noted similar card systems that don’t allow cash fare transfers from bus to trains have been used effectively around the world, including London and Paris. TransLink is promising a small discount for regular use of Compass cards over cash fares. TransLink also says FareSaver tickets will be transitioned out as early as Jan. 1, 2014. TransLink is currently testing the Compass card system before officially launching it, likely early next year.

We’re not in the business of servicing other government land and if this were to be purchased by First Nations that would be an other government land and that’s not the business that we’re in, so I’m very confused about this as well.” Coun. Ian Paton suggested the province retain ownership of the small par-

cel and create a park. “I find this whole thing a bit ridiculous. If you look on the map, this piece coming inside the dike, why would the province even need to dispose of a little tiny two-acre piece like this? It would be a perfect setting for people walking on the dike to make it a small park,” he said. “This thing just stinks to high heaven. I’m sorry.” Other councillors also

questioned the province’s motives for selling the land. “I puzzle why, with all of the things in the province of British Columbia that could be attended to, that this little two-acre parcel could attract so much attention and time and effort by the ministry to initiate this process,” said Coun. Sylvia Bishop. “I smell a rat... I suspect that there’s something not right. It feels uncomfortable.”

Jeff Sheldrake, manager for Crown lands opportunities with the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Management, said dealing with the wedge parcel is just the end of a larger project. “We have been working around Brunswick Point to ensure the area around the dike is protected,” he said. “This is our last little piece that we’re trying to finalize.”

Councillor grateful for support following husband’s passing Sylvia Bishop returned to council chambers this week, thanking residents for an outpouring of support following her husband’s death last month. The first-term councillor took a leave of absence from council after her husband, Robert Brown, lost his battle with cancer Aug. 13. Bishop took a moment during Monday’s council meeting to thank residents for the outpouring of kind wishes and support she and her family received after

Brown’s passing. She said she received countless emails and phone calls, as well as food, from residents. “You have helped soften my family’s sorrow, and for that I thank you,” she said. In early August, Bishop issued a statement to explain her absence from a July 29 meeting. She wrote that her husband had been admitted to the Irene Thomas Hospice in Ladner with an advanced stage melanoma, a type of skin cancer.

Recycling ambassador tours province Local student spends summer spreading word about ElectroRecycle BY

Tsawwassen’s Eric Liu (left) and fellow ElectroRecycle ambassador James Shaw at one of the many stops the pair made this summer.

Tsawwassen’s Eric Liu, 22, who just started his fourth year in Langara College’s marketing program, trekked around the province as an ElectroRecycle ambassador instead of taking on a typical summer job. “It was a really interesting experience,” Liu said, adding he got the chance to see many smaller communities — Fort Nelson, Dawson Creek, Williams

please join us for

Lake and Chetwynd, to name a few — he might never have seen otherwise. According to its website, ElectroRecycle is the first small appliance and power tool recycling program in Canada and the only government approved electrical recycling program in B.C. ElectroRecycle accepts more than 300 products, Liu said, from electric toothbrushes and countertop appliances to hand-held drills, vacuum cleaners and treadmills. The program is run by the Canadian Electrical Stewardship Association, a non-profit industry association, and offers residents a place to recycle small appliances and power tools free of charge. The program is funded through the recycling fee applied to the sale

of new electrical products. As an ambassador, Liu’s job was to travel the province raising awareness and educating communities about ElectroRecycle. Liu said he and his fellow ambassadors set up booths at events in the communities they visited to help spread the word. As well, the ambassadors visited the collection sites to speak with stakeholders to get feedback on how the program is working. Liu, who was born in Taiwan and immigrated to Canada with his family at a young age, will graduate next spring with an eye to continue promoting green products as he begins his career. “I’ve always found that an interesting field to work in,” he said.

TED MURPHY

MURPHY’S LAW It’s at this time of year you begin to hear from two distinct camps. With just over a week to go until summer officially turns into fall, there are those folks who are lamenting the end to the most glorious of all seasons and those who are, for some curious reason, looking forward to colder temperatures, shorter days and a lot more rain. Everyone has their own taste in weather, just as they do in food, music, literature and the like, so I fully admit it’s not a case of being right or wrong, but let’s just say those who prefer liquid sunshine are less right than the rest of us. I live with one of those less right people, the kind that can’t wait to roll out the welcome mat for the crisp, cool air that only autumn can bring. The changing colours, the falling leaves, the crackle of the fireplace ... it’s a magical time of the year, or so I’m told. Now, I’m not totally immune to the charms of fall, but come on, you have to admit that dark nights and incessant rain have a way of getting old in a hurry. Any way you slice it, doesn’t summer trump fall (and don’t even get me started on winter!)? Isn’t light better than dark? Hot better than cold? Dry better than wet? I know, it’s a personal choice and, as my wife likes to point out, it’s a little odd that a guy who can burn on a cloudy day in March would be such a cheerleader for summer. I think I’d have more time for the other seasons if summer in these parts wasn’t so fleeting. If it was one sunny day after the next for months on end, maybe all that sunshine would get old and the cooler weather would come as a welcome respite. But once summer gives way to fall — and as well as it’s hanging on at the moment, you know its days are numbered — we’re going to be in for half a year or more of what you could charitably call the umbrella season. Or maybe it should be called window scraper season or exorbitant heating bill season. I realize we’ve got it just about as good as anywhere in Canada, so I shouldn’t complain, but I view next weekend not merely as the arrival of autumn, but the beginning of an interminable wait for summer to re-appear. It’s a bit like Boxing Day when you were a kid: there were 364 more sleeps before Christmas came around again. Well, we’ve got nine more sleeps until the fall equinox, so hopefully Mother Nature is in a charitable mood and the good weather holds on until at least that time. It won’t return for another nine months, so savour what’s left of summer.

‘Garden’ homeowners should have seen this vote coming STEVE GRAHAM

COMMUNITY COMMENT This is the last of three columns on the process used to approve the Marina Garden Estates modification application. In the last column I reviewed how the public hearing process had been managed so that local residents did not effectively express their opposition to the proposed development. The Delta council vote on the application saw Mayor Lois Jackson and councillors Robert Campbell, Bruce McDonald and Jeannie Kanakos vote in favour and councillors Ian Paton and Sylvia Bishop vote against. (Coun. Scott Hamilton, who should resign, abstained.) All the votes in support were from North Delta councillors (Campbell lives in South Delta but his political support is in North Delta) and the two votes in opposition were from South Delta councillors. (I suggest we get more South Deltans on the next council.)

This vote was foreseeable, with the exception of Paton, who ran with Jackson’s team. The North Delta group has a social agenda to maximize the population of Delta by approving very dense housing developments with few or no compensatory infrastructure or recreational amenities. This agenda appears to have substantial public support in North Delta and minimal public support in Tsawwassen. Ladner is equivocal or doesn’t care. The residents of Marina Garden Estates vote at Neilson Grove Elementary. Only 38 per cent of eligible voters at this poll voted in the 2011 municipal election. Of these, 42 per cent voted for prodevelopment Jackson for mayor (and 74 per cent for all major pro-development candidates), while only 26 per cent voted for anti-development candidate Krista Engelland. (The labels are simplistic for brevity.) Similarly, Neilson Grove voters supported the six candidates for council that were elected. Paton received the most votes, being the only candidate from Ladner. However, McDonald and Hamilton, who were likely to support the development application, received more votes than Bishop, who was not likely to support it. Further, I don’t recall Marina Garden Estates

being raised as an election issue, in contrast to Tsawwassen where the Southlands development always is. From the foregoing I argue that residents who opposed the application for a modified development should not have been surprised that a pro-development council approved it. The surprising thing is these residents voted preferentially for this council. If the matter were important to them, then why didn’t they raise it as a campaign issue and why did they vote for candidates who would likely vote to approve it? I admit that I don’t follow the political scene north of Highway 17 too closely, but I do know you usually get what you vote for. I conclude from the Marina Garden Estates process that: (1) Council should not approve development applications for a period more than five years out; (2) the public hearing process used by this council marginalizes real residents unless they are very proactive; (3) residents should vote and should know the agendas of council candidates on local issues of importance to them; and (4) the residents of Ladner need to develop a consensus on what they want. It’s equivocal to oppose largescale developments but vote for candidates who support them.

Cyclists pay like the others

Editor: Ah, why do the hateful among us see cyclists as freeloaders living free of fees, free of sales and income taxes, free of house, car and health insurance premiums, free of municipal utility bills, free of property taxes, free of ad infinitum? Cyclists pay the taxes everybody else does. What’s more, 99.9 per cent of cyclists drive vehicles and so they pay the costs of the road that cyclist-haters, in their paranoia, believe that they pay all by themselves. And as motorists, cyclists know the rules of the road,

which, by the way, most cell-phone drivers and cyclist-haters ignore with great abandon, just ask ICBC and other car insurance companies. Cyclists on sidewalks? Well, I can understand why cyclists take to sidewalks along some routes: there are no provisions made for their safety, and too many drivers don’t consider cyclists’ vulnerability; rather, they insist on speeding right on by, forcing cyclists into lanes of parked cars, or into curbs, or off into ditches. Does Delta have bike lanes? Sort of, yes, if stylized pictures of bicycles

painted in white along road edges count, yes, Delta has plenty, but what protection do they give? None. As for the so-called bike lanes provided for along the edges of wider roads, well, lines of white paint and more white pictures of bikes don’t offer much protection from distracted drivers. And, more often than not, those so-called bike lanes are used for parking and walking dogs, leaving the sidewalks unused. Hey, if you’re among those who need to hate, go after harder targets than cyclists. Greg J. Edwards

Trade unions still have a vital role to play Editor: Re: Unions becoming increasingly irrelevant, letter to the editor, Sept. 6 Steven Austin’s jaundiced view of unions appears to be focused on their leaders rather than the essential role they play in our economy and society. After all, it was the power of unions that helped to bring in the changes to employees rights (workplace safety, benefits, etc.) and remuneration that boosted the middle class

and thereby fostered the growth of North American economies in the post Second World War period. In my view, there needs to be a fairer distribution of a nation’s wealth than is currently enjoyed in the current weakened state of our economies, and trade unions have a vital role to play in negotiating the redistribution of the products of our economic system. Detroit’s bankruptcy was largely due to the actions of the auto industry rather than the power of unions.

The so-called Big Three car makers reacted poorly to the weakened dollar and high oil prices in the 1970s by continuing to produce unreliable gas-guzzlers and failing to compete effectively with more reliable and fuel-efficient European and Asian imports. This led to pressure on wages and the movement of production out of Detroit, which then damaged the city’s economy because spending by the workers fell. Stephen Calvert

Time to delve into the grey

Editor: Farms or ports? That is the question. Or is it? Unfortunately, the two sides are routinely presented as mutual exclusives. One evokes considerable local sentiment, as it involves preservation; the other evokes fear and uncertainty, as it involves change. But is the reality so binary? From a historical perspective, the farms are fairly new here; the port is even newer. Both leverage the unique location and attributes of Delta, and both struggle for viability in a global marketplace. Many places would love to boast one of them. In this duel, the voices championing farmland preservation are essential. Too often the citizenry become resigned to the organized forces that shape our regional identities. For every Clayoquot Sound success, there is a tale of paternalistic intervention that has “administered” havoc on a society. Local activists appear to

be fighting for the responsible stewardship of farmland, primarily through limiting port expansion. The implication is that by curtailing one, they will encourage the other. However, anyone who has read the Delta Agricultural Plan knows that “industrial expansion” is but one obstacle (irrigation, processing and entrybarriers all play a part). Meanwhile, Port Metro Vancouver isn’t really fighting. Not yet. Perhaps it’s because it has federal paramountcy on its side, or provincial allies similarly buoyed by the prospects of subsidized trade infrastructure. As a Canadian taxpayer, I would like the opportunity to stress-test the business case for expansion. As a Delta resident, I would also like to make sure that, if there is growth, it falls beneath the umbrella of sustainable economic development. But what does that mean? Good question. I think it means: if there are impacts, they are balanced through

specific measures that strengthen — rather than threaten — the ongoing health of the local environment, economy and population. Specifically, in addition to habitat enhancements, this could involve higher truck emission standards, local job density or intensified industrial developments that rely on less land. Some communities have even negotiated “linkage payments” or similar impact fees, which involve creating a fund to support strategic community priorities (like agriculture). My concern is that with so much energy devoted to galvanizing a stance (“Spetiforing” in local vernacular), little attention is being paid to the innovations or mitigations that could be happening. And the port is unlikely to kickstart such conversations. Delving into the grey area might entail less valour, and more homework, but no one said evolution was easy. Patrick Thompson

Letters to the Editor

Seductive rhetoric can’t avoid the cold, hard ‘facts’

Editor: Re: No need to spread fear about latest Southlands proposal, letter to the editor, Sept. 4 I love to read Douglas Bolen’s letters. They’re always full of things he’s heard, or conjectured. Of course, it’s his right to think happy thoughts regarding the development of the Southlands, but really, have you been seduced by the rhetoric? Tsawwassen residents recognize that when you put lipstick on the developer’s pig, it’s still the same old pig. Notwithstanding Bolen’s “lipstick,” I have to admit I’m concerned every time

I read the facts on Delta’s website. Delta ignoring its taxpayer-funded engineering report on elevation levels for safe construction on a flood plan, in favour of the developer’s less stringent approach, makes me concerned. Who will be liable if a natural calamity occurs and it’s learned that Delta did not insist on the recommended elevation levels? When governments make such egregious decisions, it means taxpayers pay the bill. The developer will be off the hook. Another factual worry I have is learning that Delta is ignoring expert

advice from the Ministry of Agriculture. A recent letter of concern sent to Delta Council indicating the proposed farming components of the plan are not feasible, which means taxpayers will end up paying costs far greater than current estimates to maintain the developer’s “gift.” As Delta has already confirmed, the irrigation and drainage expenses during Phase 1 of the development will likely cost taxpayers well over $10 million. Not only that, but the cost to taxpayers for agricultural improvements during phases 2 and 3 aren’t even calculated, meaning

millions more will likely be sucked out of your pockets. Look on Delta’s website, the facts are right there. Another big concern hasn’t changed: traffic, traffic, traffic. A report by Delta’s own director of engineering indicates some major intersections on 56th Street will fail by 2015 due to overwhelming volume. Dump trucks delivering fill by the tens of thousands — still coming. Another 3,000plus residents and their vehicles — still coming. Improved transit services — not coming. Major road upgrades — not coming. One of the most fascinating facts for me is the

barrage of ads, events and promotional materials by the developer. It’s hard not to believe the hype. Yes, I’ve thought, bike trails, a farmers market. Why am I still opposing this massive development? The developer is making it sound so attractive, I was ready to jump on my bicycle and check it out last weekend but then my wife reminded me about a few more of those pesky “facts,” such as the wisdom of a massive development next door to the Ramsar recognized site of Boundary Bay. And finally we have the developer’s remarks to council on July 29. In the

developer’s presentation, he stated his only firm intention is to build 450 condos in Phase 1. The rest of the housing mix is subject to “market forces,” which means the only cottage you are likely to enjoy is the one at the Town Centre Mall. I, for one, have decided not to buy into the developer’s jiggery-pokery. I have every confidence the thousands of Tsawwassen residents who oppose this development haven’t been seduced and will continue to fight in favour of doing what’s right and best for our community. See you at the public hearing. Richard Kunz

Southlands will become most pedestrian-friendly neighbourhood in town Editor: I recently had the opportunity to participate in a transportation discussion group focusing on the Southlands development hosted at the little cottage at the Tsawwassen Town Centre Mall. I was invited there by a friend to hear if Southlands really is going to be as walkable a commu-

nity as its promotion material suggests, or just another car-centric development. I am particularly interested in this topic as I am one of the founding members of Safe Route Tsawwassen, a community group that formed to make 56th Street a safer place for bikers, pedestrians, transit users and those with mobility and

A day to learn

other impairments. After hearing the Century Group’s presentation, I was pleasantly surprised at its commitment to not only make the Southlands a walkable and bikeable community, but that it had gone the extra mile to connect the new Southlands trails to the surrounding neighbourhoods.

While at the meeting, I was shown how separate biking and walking paths would extend from 56th Street to Boundary Bay Regional Park and the community of Boundary Bay. After looking at all the information and asking many questions, I concluded the Southlands will not only be a pedestrian-

oriented community with a market square, it will be the safest and most pedestrian and bike-oriented neighbourhood in all of Tsawwassen. I hope Delta can learn from what is being proposed on the Southlands and will extend that walking and bike network across Tsawwassen.

I would like to thank Century Group for listening to my ideas, answering my questions and including me in its focus group. I would also encourage anyone else interested in making Tsawwassen an even better community to live to stop by the cottage and share your ideas with the staff. Roland K. Katagi, Ph.D.

T2 positions port to seize opportunities

Container demand continues to grow, so Port Metro Vancouver proposing second terminal at Roberts Bank BY

Predictions from several different economists show that container traffic on Canada’s West Coast is going to continue to increase. Opportunity is upon us, and standing still is not an option. We must be ready to meet the coming demand and to support the local and national economy or we risk losing the advantages we have worked so hard for. That’s why we are proposing the Roberts Bank Terminal 2 project. In 2012, a record 2.71 million TEUs (20-foot equivalent units) of containers moved through Port Metro Vancouver, an eight per cent increase over 2011. Mid-year statistics show continued growth in 2013. These containers bring in goods like electronics, food and clothing, and leave the country carrying Canadian products such as lumber, pulp and local agricultural products. They provide access to international markets that support local jobs and businesses, such as a blueberry

First Nations peoples and immigrants, businesspeople and families, all looking for a better life, were attracted to the opportunity and fertile lands of the Lower Mainland. In order to ensure we have these opportunities well into the future, it is important we plan now to seize them as they come our way. A sustainable environment and strong economy are not mutually exclusive. Both in the Lower Mainland and all across Canada, it is in all of our interest to maintain the balance between them. According to forecasts, container traffic will double in the next 10 to 15 years and almost triple by 2030. In order to meet this demand, and to support the local and national economy, we are planning now to be ready with the necessary infrastructure. tal impacts have been identified as part of this process, Port Metro Vancouver will develop and evaluate options for mitigation. Completion of this project will leave a legacy of benefits for generations to come — both economic and social — across B.C. and Canada. During construction, over a six-year period, the project would generate about 4,500 total jobs, or $1.14 billion in wages. Once at operational capacity, it would generate 18,300 jobs worth $620 million in wages each year. New tax revenues from the increase in trade activities could also help support essential social programs and environmental priorities. We know T2 is a significant project for the region, and that it will undoubtedly impact some communities. That’s why we are fully committed to open and thorough engagement and consultation. This year, the elegant event will take place on Saturday, Oct. 19 in the newly reconstructed Harris Barn at Kirkland House in Ladner. Over 500 take part in Westshore coal port tours during summer Student guides lead visitors around massive operation at Roberts Bank Free tours of Westshore Terminals attracted more than 500 people over seven weekends throughout the summer. The tours were advertised in the local newspapers and the 512 people who took part were mostly residents of the area, said Westshore vice president and general manager Denis Horgan. “We are a busy terminal and have been running flat out all summer, right when we were showing our community guests around the site,” said Horgan. “Even at that hectic pace the overwhelming response of our tour visitors was positive, both to coal and the way we ship it.” Student tour guides showed a corporate video on Westshore operations before each tour and then drove the visitors around the 54-hectare (133-acre) site in a van with up to 10 passengers at a time, providing them with running commentary. “From the feedback our tour guides were given, people were particularly impressed with our new $8.5 million dust suppression system and the $5.5 million water processing plant we installed this past summer,” said Horgan. Visitors also learned about MAMU, Westshore’s Mobile Air Monitoring

Visitors saw all aspects of the coal port at Roberts Bank as Westshore Terminals once again offered free summer tours. Units, which are available to check air quality for dusting in surrounding neighbourhoods. “I doubt there’s ever been a time when Westshore has been more proactive toward our environmental responsibilities ... and we felt we were doing a good job before,” said David Crook, Westshore’s manager of engineering and environmental services. Crook introduced one of the two MAMUs to the public at the Tsawwassen Sun Festival in August and said the response has been encouraging. “Locals are interested in our air quality studies

and have suggested various locations where we should set up,” he said. “The first location chosen was The Village off English Bluff Road where MAMU is still recording data. “We are doing this because coal gets blamed for most airborne particulate issues,” said Crook. “Past studies have shown that coal is either not in the dust samples at all, or only makes up a very small part.” Meanwhile, Westshore will launch a $230 million equipment replacement program in 2014, which will see three aging stackerreclaimers and a shiploader

in superstitions, although there is much in our world that was unexplainable. That was when my grandmother became my teacher. Her “rock” of knowledge was that God loved her, and God’s desire for her was an abundant life. I checked the Bible for a clue to help me on this “frightening” day and found these words from the first letter to Timothy (4:7): “Have nothing to do with profane myths and old wives’ tales. Train yourself in godliness.” That makes better sense to me. Get out of bed! Go and search for God working in the world — and place your energy and emotion there. Who knows, your work might bring you God’s blessings.

I couldn’t believe my luck when I looked to see my name stood beside the Minister’s Minute column for Friday the 13th! If my Irish grandmother were still alive, she would tell me to stay in bed on this “dangerous” day and be very careful not to engage in any work. Grandma was the queen of superstition. Horseshoes had to be hung, tips up, over the door and bird droppings meant good fortune. Itchy palms meant receiving wealth and dropping a knife meant a handsome man was coming to visit. Was this just in my house? Although Grandma had lots of superstitions, she always had a twinkle in her eye, letting me know she really believed in fun and play, not so much

She offers programs for preschoolers to preteens. When kids invite her into their play, Holmes says, “I find that I can hold their attention longer, it’s exciting, it’s fun and they want to come back.” Kids can create their own musical stories, analyze their own material, make their own props and put together performances. “Basically the whole idea is that the children play their way into structure. Everything is project based but they do their research through play,” says Holmes, a children’s author and songwriter. Preschool age kids can act out traditional stories, nursery rhymes and fairytales and also get a chance to make their own sounds with percussion instruments. Holmes says she’s excited to start drop-in sessions for preschool age children

Lea & Friends visit longhouse gallery New show features range of work BY

DAVE WILLIS

dwillis@delta-optimist.com

A total of 13 artists will have work on display at the upcoming Lea & Friends exhibit at the Tsawwassen Longhouse Gallery. “The show’s got lots of colour. Everybody is going their own direction,” says artist and teacher Lea Price. Each of the artists in the show has been a student of hers, she notes. “What I try to do is listen to the artists themselves and then try to get them to the path they want to go to.” The show will feature paintings in mostly acrylics and mixed media as well as sculptures from artist Yorke Graham. “He’s really clever,” says Price. “He takes all sorts of found materials ... puts them together and makes some quite funky caricatures or some larger garden features.” The artists, most of whom will have at least five pieces in the show, are all

Trip of a lifetime: Trailing tigers in India BY

MARGARET DEEFHOLTS Optimist contributor

“Roko! Roko!” (Stop! Stop!) Our guide hisses urgently to the driver of our Jeep. Moving shadow like through a bamboo thicket by the forest road is the animal I’ve travelled halfway around the globe to see: a magnificent tigress. She is trailed by four half-grown cubs. We are in Bandhavgarh, a 437-square-kilometre tiger reserve in Madhya Pradesh at the very heart of India. According to the Lonely Planet guidebook, this is the one Indian wildlife reserve where visitors are almost guaranteed to see a tiger. “Almost,” but not necessarily “always.” For two successive mornings, our group of three has boarded a waiting jeep at the Nature Heritage Resort in the dawn-blushed morning and set off on safari. Bandhavgarh at that hour is alive with activity. The rising sun shafts through the Sal forests and

bamboo clumps and as we bump over rough jungle pathways, families of spotted deer graze unperturbed, a group of hairy wild boars trot off snorting contemptuously and tribes of blackfaced langur monkeys survey us with great curiosity. The forest is filled with bird song, even the hoot of a white owl as he looks thoughtfully down at us. Camera shutters click as we come upon a peacock, his tail feathers spread in magnificent display, dancing to woo a nearby female who pecks around in the dust unimpressed by his ardour. But there’s been no sign of our main quarry — the elusive Indian tiger. Two days and four safaris have gone by and my hopes have begun to dim. Today is our last chance. The driver steers the jeep in reverse, keeping the tigress and her cubs in sight. Then, at the edge of an open field, a dramatic scene unfolds. The tigress, muscles rippling, bursts out of the forest cover, and shoots like a raging tawny

streak towards a cluster of vultures. The birds take wing, and the tigress halts over the remains of her (earlier) kill. She pauses, sniffs the carcass and then looks around the field, taking stock of her surroundings. I almost stop breathing as she stares intently at us... and then, as though shrugging us off as inconsequen-

tial, she walks back to her cubs standing half hidden on the fringe of the forest. “Wow,” I whisper. Awestruck, my companions nod dumbly. For the next hour we continue driving through the jungle. We pass by strangler vines, which like enormous pythons twine themselves around sal tree trunks, when suddenly from the leafy

canopy above comes the urgent whoop of a langur. “That’s a warning call,” our guide says. We stiffen. Sure enough, at a fork in the trail ahead, we spot a second tigress strolling with her two small cubs, cute little balls of yellow-andblack striped wool, at her heels. We are no more than 20 metres away, and she bares her teeth in a growl as she glares at us. We halt. She halts too while her cubs, unfazed, frolic around her. She hesitates and then crosses the pathway and with the cubs in tow, strides into a copse of spindly bamboo shoots. We trail them for about 100 metres before they disappear into a thicket of tangled jungle. Two sightings! We exchange excited highfives, but the morning isn’t over yet. Half an hour later, we round a bend and there, blending into the striped sunlight filtering across the pathway, is a tigress sitting nonchalantly in the middle of the road.

Her two small cubs play among the trees fringing the road, barely a stone’s throw away from us. Our driver daringly edges closer. There’s a heart-thumping moment as she tenses and stands up, tail twitching, ears flicking and begins to stride towards us, a menacing low growl in her throat. We are uncomfortably aware that our jeep is an open vehicle and vulnerable to the big cat’s pounce. We reverse and the tigress halts. She snarls once more for effect, and then goes in search of her cubs. They emerge from the trees. The three of them cross the road and disappear into the jungle, but not before one of the cubs peeks curiously at us through the fork of a tree trunk, and I capture it on camera. In the space of two hours we’d seen three adult tigers and eight little cubs, 11 animals in all. Such unbelievable luck! Travel Writers’ Tales is an independent travel article syndicate.

Terry Fox run set for Sunday South Deltans will keep the memory, and the fundraising, alive as they take part in the annual Terry Fox Run this Sunday. More than 30 years ago, Terry Fox began his now iconic Marathon of Hope across the nation to raise money for cancer research. One year after his journey ended abruptly just outside Thunder Bay, Ontario, the first Terry Fox Run was held in more than 750 communities across Canada. Today, the annual event is held in countless Canadian towns and cities, as well as in more than 20 countries around the world, and raises millions of dollars for cancer research. The South Delta Terry Fox Run includes five and 10-kilometre routes, both of which begin and end in the parking lot of the Tsawwassen Town Centre Mall.

Located inside Tsawwassen Shopping Centre

STACY WHITMAN DENTURIST

Both routes are open for walkers, runners and rollers. Dogs are welcome, as long as they are leashed. In addition to the run, there will be entertainment and refreshments, said Leslie Abramson, one of the organizers of the event, which is put on annually by the Rotary Club of Tsawwassen. As well, there will be a memory board, which allows participants to remember loved ones lost to, or fighting, the disease. “That’s a special place for us,” Abramson said. Registration starts at 8:30 a.m. and the walk/run/roll begins at 10 a.m. There is no registration fee and no minimum donation. Participants are invited to stick around after the run for a barbecue, raffle draw and other festivities. For more information visit www.terryfoxrun.org.

Earthwise celebrating all things tomato this weekend They come in many different shapes, sizes and varieties, and they are ready to be put on display at the Earthwise Farm this weekend. They are Earthwise Society’s fabulous assortment of organic heirloom tomatoes, ready for sampling at this year’s Tomato Festival. The Tomato Festival, set for the Earthwise Farm and Garden in Boundary Bay tomorrow from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., offers something for the whole family, with live music, food and cooking demonstrations, and a children’s activity area. The Tomato Festival celebrates the 35 varieties of heirloom tomatoes expertly tended by Earthwise master gardeners Graham and Maja Willoughby. It is an opportunity to taste test and choose favourites, try them out on freshly baked cob oven pizza and talk to the experts to learn how it’s all done. There will be cooking

demonstrations by Wes Levesque, who will share his secrets for bringing out the best in local tomatoes. Then wander over to the patio garden and enjoy some music. Heirloom tomatoes are older varieties that have been grown historically in different regions of the world. Most are no longer widely available commercially. Today, plant collectors save and grow seeds from these antique varieties partly to help preserve the world’s genetic diversity but also to celebrate the variations of taste and colour of this diverse fruit. For many people, biting into a ripe, fresh-off- thevine heirloom tomato is a revelation: this is what tomatoes used to taste like. The Earthwise Farm and Garden are located at 64003rd Ave in Tsawwassen. For more information on the festival, visit www. earthwisesociety.bc.ca or call 604-946-9828.

Garden Club kicks off new season The South Delta Evergreen Garden Club begins a new season of gardener education programs next week in Ladner. The club will hold its first meeting of the fall season on Tuesday, Sept. 17 at Kin House at 7:30 p.m. Each month, the club offers a garden education talk that is open to the public. This month’s speaker will be Emily Budinski, who will speak about herbs, focusing especially on unusual ones that can be grown in the garden. The talk will also cover some uses for herbs — culinary and decorative — and how to propagate them. For more information, contact Terry Findlay at tafindlay@dccnet.com.

Helping Cardiac Patients Go Home Healthy “Can you hear me? Stay with me and focus on my face. You are in the Emergency Room at Delta Hospital. We are here to help you”. These are the words you might hear if you are having a heart attack. Heart problems are serious and you’ll never know how terrifying it can be until it happens to you. Likewise, until you need cardiac services, it’s hard to understand how important it is to have local, state-ofthe-art care right here in Delta. Last year 3,809 people came to Delta Hospital for cardiac treatment and diagnosis. We at Delta Hospital recognize the enormous impact this has on our community. “Time is essential when treating someone with heart distress”, says Dr. Robert Shaw, Chief Internist at Delta Hospital. “The amazing support of this community has allowed us to continually provide the best care possible to these critical patients”. It is people like you, our donors, who have made this level of care possible and helped our patients go home healthy. Like Daphne, a young, healthy mother and resident of Delta. She was immediately stabilized and when it was safe, she was transferred to another facility for further observation. It was the quick work of our staff as well as the sophisticated equipment that ensured Daphne’s positive outcome. Five months after suffering the sudden cardiac arrest, Daphne is back at home with her family, back to her regular routines, and back to running. “I know that Delta Hospital saved me”, says Daphne. “I would not be here today without their quick response and life-saving skills and

Heart disease is serious and requires prompt diagnosis and treatment. As Kathy Haslet, a Delta Hospital Cardiology Technician, explains, “most of the time, it’s a life or death situation”. The good news is that heart disease is both preventable and manageable, if you take the right steps. Things like what you eat, how much you exercise, and quitting smoking are all factors that can help you keep your heart healthy. That is where Delta Hospital’s heart related programs get involved. The Cardiac Clinic, where Kathy works, saw over 2200 patients last year and that number is expected to grow to 2,700 by 2015. It is the job of those who work in the clinic to investigate what might be the cause of shortness of breath, palpitations or chest pains in a patient. Most people who enter the Car-

REPORT TO THE COMMUNITY 2012-2013

Message from the Chair

This past fall I was pleased to begin my term as Chair of Delta Hospital Foundation. I offer my sincere gratitude to my predecessor, Lois Wilkinson, who will remain on the Board as Past Chair, and to my fellow Board members for their continued efforts on behalf of the Foundation and the community. I am honoured to be taking on my new role at a very exciting time for both Delta Hospital and the Foundation. In the fall of 2012 Fraser Health began working on a business case for the implementation of the recently completed Delta Hospital High Level Master Plan. We now have a vision for three phases of development and renewal for our community hospital over the next 20 years. It has been a great year for the continuing partnership between the community of Delta and Delta Hospital. The most rewarding aspect of my time on the Delta Hospital Foundax }~ } z y ~ hzyx ~ l xness to the direct impact our community’s efforts have in our hospital.

Your donations can help in more dramatic fashion at times such as helping to purchase a $138,000 cardiac care package that includes h~ x }~ w xz y}w~ ~ several heart monitors. The addition of this equipment allows over 2,200 patients to stay in our community for diagnosis and monitoring and avoid the stress of delayed and distant care. On the other hand, something as seemingly simple as a specialized mattress can make so much difference to some of our residents in Mountain View Manor who are forced to spend extended periods in bed. We saw another important development in the future of Delta Hospital Foundation this past year when Veronica Carroll joined the team as its new Executive Director in July 2012. Veronica joined us at a very busy time and the Board and I offer our congratulations to Veronica for her great work in meeting and engaging her new community as we work together to lead the hospital and Foundation towards a bigger and healthier future.

This year marked the Foundation’s 25th anniversary of supporting Delta Hospital in its delivery of outstanding health care. Our past has been marked by the generous support of our donors and partners. Our future depends on that continuing relationship. The generosity you have shown, from our modest beginnings in 1988, to a year where both our Gala and Golf Tournament raised record amounts, is key to providing leading surgical, residential, and cardiac care. x j}wz yw||}zx q }~h ~x Delta Hospital Foundation will continue to provide the best care possible for those we love; our families, our neighbors, and our community. Thank you all. Keith McGee Chair, Delta Hospital Foundation (Partner, Jarvis McGee Rice LLP)

One Gift Enriches The Lives Of So Many Throughout their almost 70 years of marriage, Charles Simser and his wife Myrtle worked hard and had a lot of fun, but always with those they loved most. The joys of spending time with friends and family was a gratifying reward for a life well lived. The couple married sixty-eight years ago in Saskatchewan and was together until Myrtle’s death in 2010. While Charles, known as Chuck by those that knew him, spent his free time on the golf course, Myrtle dedicated her time to gardening. Family and friends were very important to the couple, especially when they made the move from Saskatchewan to Tsawwassen in the y d j l z l jy x z to host holiday get-togethers and lend a hand when needed. When Myrtle began to have heart troubles and required additional medical care, she moved into Mountain View Manor. Even though the couple no longer lived in the same home, Chuck visited Myrtle every day while she was at Delta Hospital. He didn’t let weather, or appointments, keep him from a visit with the love of his life. The couple was grateful for the extraordinary care, help, and

compassion Myrtle received from the dedicated medical staff at Delta Hospital. Today, in return, the Simser’s are helping out so many others in their community who also call Mountain View Manor their home thanks to their Legacy Gift to Delta Hospital Foundation in 2012. The Simser’s gift to the hospital ~ x |wz y } qy}f k mattresses for the residents. Without thinking, everyone makes hundreds of little changes in our posture while sitting in a chair, talking on the phone, or even sleeping. These minor shifts in our weight help us to alleviate pressure points while we go about our daily activities. An qy}f k xxz yy |z}v y |z yywz relief by evenly distributing weight throughout the surface. The incredible kindness of the Simser’s allows us to provide the best care and comfort for our residents in their twilight years.

“One of the reasons the couple had been so generous with Delta Hospital is the care they received throughout their life in this community”, said Pieter H., Charles’ cousin and close friend. “Over the years, the medical staff cared for both Chuck and Myrtle – at one time simultaneously”. The care they received was extraordinary, and they wanted to recognize that by including a gift to Delta Hospital Foundation in their Will. This gift to the hospital represents a long history of community involvement and participation for the couple. They were both longtime members of their Rotary Club, Church, and active volunteers with the Salvation Army. As well, Chuck golfed, with his Beach Grove Golf Club membership, and ice-skated up into his 90s. Through it all, they always recognized that their active life and community’s stability was enriched by having quality health care close to home. As Pieter H. put it, “They were so fortunate to have a hzyx yy xj l x } z~ {w |ment and quality doctors in the community when they needed it most”. The Simser’s were good neigh-

bours, good friends, and great members of our community. Their decision to include Delta Hospital Foundation in their Will is a lasting legacy to the community that they loved so much.

REPORT TO THE COMMUNITY 2012-2013

A Year in Review After your first year with the Foundation, what are your observations? Coming to the Delta Hospital Foundation, I had heard about the community’s unwavering commitment to our hospital. Not only did this prove to be true, but I was touched with how warm and welcoming everyone in Delta has been. We have a great hospital. It’s been my privilege over the last year to ready our Foundation and our community as we move forward and address the growing health care needs in Delta.

Q & A with Veronica Carroll MBA CFRE, Executive Director, Delta Hospital Foundation

What were the Foundation’s major activities this past year? Over the past year, the Foundation reached some amazing milestones and we should all be excited

about what that will mean for health care in Delta. First, in partnership with Fraser Health, the High Level Master Plan was approved and a business case for phase one of the plan was presented to the Ministry of Health. This is a very exciting time for Delta Hospital as we look to the future of what this facility can give back to our community. Second, as 2012-2013 came to a close, we completed our 25th year as an organization. It was exhilarating for me, as I as learned about all of the amazing accomplishments this community has rallied around and helped achieve at Delta Hospital. Delta has enabled the best in patient care at this facility and I’m excited to see what the next 25 years has in store. Finally, on the eve of our 25th anniversary, we felt it was time to refresh our brand to better encompass our history, the role the Foundation and the hospital play in the com-

munity, and the amazing support we see from our donors. So we launched a new brand in March that is more than just a logo; it’s the story of who we are, where we have been, and where we are going.

What does the future of Delta Hospital look like? The future for Delta Hospital looks healthier than ever. I am proud and excited to say that the Foundation and the hospital are about to embark on the largest investment in infrastructure since it was built in 1980. Once again, our community will help transform Delta Hospital where the level and availability of care exceeds all expectations. ex}| j j } h }z x veronica.carroll@dhfoundation.ca to h~ }wx }l j}w ~ | | zx } our exciting future at Delta Hospital.

High Level Master Plan

Our Brand Story

25 Years of Patient Care

We live in a community that is aging – the oldest in Fraser Health. The truth is that an aging population will require more extensive healthcare services as we all begin to face a variety of medical issues. It is you and the needs of our community that sit at the heart of Delta Hospital’s High Level Master Plan. The plan was created out of a two-year partnership between Delta Hospital Foundation and Fraser Health, and through countless consultations with our hospital team, our community, and healthcare experts.

Our new brand conveys the caring nature of our neighbours who come together from three very distinct areas but who are, without a doubt, a community with a deep passion and commitment to our hospital. The heart is the centre of our health, and our lives. And like the heart, the hospital is the centre of our community. Young and old, male or female, all incomes and ethnic groups, at some point or another, we will all need it.

Since our beginning in 1988, the community of Delta has embraced and supported the Foundation and enabled us to grow. Over the last 25 years, and with the support of this community, the Foundation has had tremendous success. Working with our community, we have enabled the best in patient care at our hospital by asking: “will it make a difference?” And this is the philosophy we will take forward into the next 25 years.

Delta Hospital has a unique history. It’s a hospital that was built by the community, for the community through a grass roots movement that has stayed the essence of its commitment from day one. Since opening the acute care hospital in 1980, we have added a new emergency department, equipped a third operating room, created a separate endoscopy suite, and purchased a state of the art CT scanner. Other patient comforts have been added such as the “healing garden” and the “forest for the future”. All of this has been completed with community funds, donated by individuals, companies, service groups and other foundations. Delta Hospital is truly a “community” hospital. In 2010 Delta Hospital Foundation met with Fraser Health to discuss the development of a long range plan for the hospital – the High Level Master Plan. The Foundation was more than pleased

Two-day session later this month will provide strategies to deal with family member’s substance abuse The Little House Society is once again hosting a workshop aimed at helping mothers and grandmothers who have a child struggling with substance abuse. The society is offering its two-day Heart of a Mother workshop later this month. The session is open to mothers and grandmothers worried about a child or grandchild’s substance abuse. It aims to answer a number of questions: What is abuse? What is addiction? Does my child have an addiction disorder? Why is my child doing this? What should I do? What shouldn’t I do? The Heart of a Mother workshop is facilitated by Janine Nowacka, an addictions counsellor at the Cedars at Cobblehill Treatment Centre on Vancouver Island. Through the two days of the workshop, Nowacka helps participants understand what addiction is, how it affects relationships and how

women enable, as well as some practical strategies for coping and healing. Heart of a Mother runs

over two Saturdays, Sept. 21 and 28, from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Little House, 5061-12th Ave.,

Tsawwassen. The session costs $150, which includes lunch, snacks and all materials.

This is the fourth time the society has offered the workshop and it is expected to fill up quickly.

For more information, or to register, contact Nancy Lee at nancy@littlehousesociety.ca or 778-278-5755.

Probus club welcomes TFN councillor The South Delta Probus Club is hosting its first meeting back after the summer break next week. This month’s meeting features Andrea Jacobs, a new Tsawwassen First Nation councillor and community outreach representative. She will speak about economic development on TFN lands, covering the timing and types of developments planned as well as the need to develop as part of the treaty agreement. The presentation should provide Probus members and residents with an update on what is happening with developments, current and future, on TFN lands. The meeting, which is scheduled for 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 18 at the Coast Tsawwassen Inn, is free and open to all Delta residents. Probus is a worldwide association of active retirees. South Delta Probus offers its members the opportunity to learn from speakers on key issues. The association is non-political and non-fundraising, and allows members to enjoy fellowship and activities that stimulate the mind and body.

And choose a better future for all of us.

More people than ever are doing what’s right for the environment. That’s why over 666,000 kg of milk containers were recycled at Return-It™ Depots in 2012. And it’s easy to make the right choice a part of your routine; just bring them in along with your bottles and cans.

For more information and to find a Return-It™ Depot near you, call 1-800-330-9767 or visit return-it.ca/milk Zero deposit paid = zero deposit refunded.

Dr. Jeff Braun

New Chiropractor/Owner of Tsawwassen Chiropractic Clinic 1511-56th Street

My friend and colleague Dr. Don Burkett passed away suddenly and unexpectedly recently in Tsawwassen after providing outstanding care to his patients for 32 years. Having assumed the practice I want to introduce myself to the South Delta Community. I grew up in South Vancouver and have 27 years of full time practice experience in B.C. My practice is focused on maintaining the human frame in a state of optimal function. Working and living in a gravity environment brings with it traumatic, mental, emotional and postural stressors that can negatively affect the body biomechanically. Stiffness, pain, headaches, neuralgias are just some examples of symptoms that may be the result of these stressors. With wise health choices and continued Chiropractic care to keep my body working freely and pain free I hope to be a positive and productive part of this community for many, many years myself. In addition to the existing Chiropractic, Radiographic and Orthotic assessment and fitting services in the Tsawwassen office, I've added the following: • Hydromassage tables • Intersegmental Traction Tables • Wellness and Yoga seminars Our office has retained the files of all former patients of Dr. Burkett. For more information on these and other available services please go to my website drjeffbraun.ca

I welcome you to come by the office for a complimentary tour and personal meeting.

Florida next stop for Ladner pitcher After clutch playoff win for Vancouver Canadians, Tom Robson will spend 6 weeks in instructional league BY

MARK BOOTH

mbooth@delta-optimist.com

Tom Robson’s reward for his clutch playoff performance Monday night is a six week allexpenses paid trip to Florida. The Toronto Blue Jays top prospect is getting a chance to be a typical 20-year-old before heading south for what actually will be more work to conclude his season. The Ladner native is enjoying a few days with family and friends then will leave for Florida for instructional league ball. Robson knew of his destination prior to Monday’s six and a third inning masterpiece against the Boise Hawks that paved the way for a a 5-0 Vancouver Canadians’ victory and their third consecutive Northwest League playoff championship. His instructional league stint will include three to four games per week, throwing in batting practice and plenty of time for training sessions with coaches. On the top of the priority list is improving his delivery. Although Robson is looking forward to the additional work, he wouldn’t have minded if Monday night’s celebration at a sold out Nat Bailey Stadium concluded his season. “I knew two weeks ago where I would be going but because we went as far as we did in the playoffs and I got a couple of more starts, they gave me a week off,” said Robson. “It’s kind of bittersweet. That would have been a great way to

Tom Robson end my season.” Prior to the best-of-three series, Robson learned he would get the start if a third and deciding game was needed. Vancouver lost the opener in Boise then returned home Sunday to win game two, setting the stage for the biggest night of his young career. “To be honest, I was just hoping we would win the first two games and that would be it,” he laughed. “After we lost the first game I really started to think about the possibility of a third game and then we came home and won.

“I had a hard time time falling asleep Sunday night and Monday might have been the longest day of my life, just waiting for the game. I just couldn’t stop thinking about it. “There was just so much going through my head. Here was my hometown team trying to win three (championships) in a row. I also knew it was likely the very last time a lot of my family and friends would see my pitch. That’s a lot on your shoulders.” Robson said being nervous before his start is actually part of his routine and the sudden death playoff game was no exception. He settled down to have the best outing of the season, retiring the Hawks in order in the third, fourth, fifth and sixth innings. For the very first time this season, he took to the mound in the seventh and recorded an out before giving way to reliever Alonzo Gonzalez. Robson surrendered just three hits and walked none. Vancouver opened the scoring with two runs in the third and added three more insurance runs in the eighth. “Just going out there for the seventh given what was on the line was pretty cool,” Robson added. “Every time that got a baserunner (against me) they were bringing the tying run to the plate. That was always on mind so I had to stay sharp and focused. “It was a real special night that I got to celebrate with so many people that are close to me. It’s something I will never forget.”

Anhert’s 50 saves earns tie for Hawks The best rivalry in the Pacific International Junior Hockey League picked up where it left off in years past as the Richmond Sockeyes and Delta Ice Hawks battled to a 4-4 overtime tie to open up the 2013-14 regular season on Tuesday. The difference on the night was Alex Anhert. The veteran Ice Hawks goaltender was outstanding as Richmond outshot the hosts 54-26. The Sockeyes still seemed poised to come away with a win after opening up a 3-0 lead after 20 minutes. However, Delta answered with unassisted second period goals from Brent Chreptyk and captain Marc Letourneau, before pulling even when Michael Olson-Eyre at the 8:40 mark of the third period. Anhert’s brilliant night looked to be spoiled when Carson Rose wired a shot past him with just 2:24 remaining. However, Delta sent the game into overtime when Benjamin Blake beat Richmond goalie Kootenay Alder 1:09 later.

After a bye week, the Junior Bantam Rams kicked off their schedule with a win over North Delta.
