Big crowd expected for hearing

Century Group’s Southlands proposal to go before the public beginning Monday at South Delta Recreation Centre BY

A large crowd is expected at next week’s public hearing as a development proposal for the Southlands takes centre stage.

Three days have been scheduled, starting Monday, at the South Delta Recreation Centre to allow people to provide input on Century Group’s plan for the Tsawwassen site bordered by 56th Street and Boundary Bay Road.

Most residents who have lived in Delta long enough are aware of the property’s controversial history, including a record-breaking public hearing almost a quarter-century ago. This time around supporters and opponents are once again expected to clash, although not to the extent of 1989.

Following the concepts of new urbanism and agricultural urbanism, the Century application includes 950 residential units in various forms and densities on 20 per cent of the site, housing stock that’s aimed at young families and downsizers.

The proposal also has over 7,400 square metres (80,000 square feet) of commercial space. Century Group is also proposing to construct a connector road through the property, which would extend from 3rd Avenue and Boundary Bay Road to 4th Avenue and

Having owned the property for over 20 years, the company proposes to transfer 172 hectares (425 acres) to Delta, amounting to 80 per cent of the site. That would be used for agriculture, natural habitat, public open space, including a Market Square, and greenways. In addition to the land, Century is proposing to transfer ownership of the Alexander/Gunn House and the Red Barn to Delta.

Both buildings are in the proposed Market Square area.

Century Group also proposes to provide $9 million to improve agricultural drainage and irrigation as well as lease back approximately 18.7 hectares (46 acres) from Delta for smallscale farming. The remainder of the agricultural land that would be transferred to Delta would be leased for larger-scale, soil-based farming.

“Southlands gives Tsawwassen an opportunity to shape the future of our community. With your support, it will be the first project of its kind in Canada, and would add lasting value to all of Delta,” according to the Century Group.

Asking people to show their support, a company promotional website also notes, “Many people in our community, and in the region, are looking to Southlands to provide a

Canadian model for sustainable neighbourhood development.”

Unlike previous development proposals for the site by others, Century Group has significant support in the community for its plan, however sizable opposition still remains.

Concerned about development impacts, including traffic, Boundary Bay resident Amanda Kemp started an online petition at www. change.org/en-CA/petitions/

Complaining about the early sign-up and start times of the hearing, Southlands the Facts is urging residents to show up and voice their opposition to the proposal.

The group is also angered that anyone who provided correspondence before July 30, and wishes it to be included in the public hearing record, must resubmit it prior to the conclusion of the hearing.

“Not only is your presence essential, but also it is also crucial that you send your written opposition to Mayor and Council. You see, Mayor Jackson has decided that ‘Revisionist History’ is the best way to govern in Delta,” states Dana Maslovat on the Southlands the Facts website.

CAO George Harvie told the Optimist councillors, in fact, would consider all information received on the application, including correspondence prior to July 30.

A speakers’ list will be available to sign up at the entrance of the venue one hour prior to the hearing.

The hearing is scheduled to take place Monday to Wednesday of next week.

It will run from 3 to 9:30 p.m. daily, with a 45-minute break at 6 p.m.

Sobeys forced to sell Safeway store in Tsawwassen BY

Sobeys Inc. announced this week that, in order to proceed with its acquisition of Canada Safeway stores, the company must sell off a number of stores in Western Canada, including the Tsawwassen Safeway.

On Tuesday, Sobeys signed a consent agreement with the Canadian Competition Bureau, which allows the acquisition to move forward with the con-

dition the company divest itself of 23 stores in B.C., Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba.

Sobeys spokesperson Andrew Walker said the company announced the acquisition back in June but, given the size of the takeover, it was subject to review by the Competition Bureau.

During the review process, the competition tribunal found the transaction would “likely result in a substantial lessening or

prevention of competition in the retail supply of a fullline of grocery products in certain areas in Western Canada.”

Sobeys Inc., which is owned by Empire Company Limited, owns, or franchises, several grocery chains, including Thrifty Foods, IGA, Price Chopper, FreshCo and Foodland.

The 23 stores up for sale include 13 Safeway locations as well as one IGA, a Price Chopper, seven Sobeys locations and the

Walker told the Optimist that under the agreement, Sobeys must sell the locations as viable grocery stores to a company that will continue to operate them as grocery stores.

The community faces adverse effects, but any mention of Tsawwassen has been left out of an application to construct radio transmission towers just across the border in Point Roberts.

That was one of the biggest points of contention at a community meeting at South Delta Secondary Wednesday evening on the proposal by BBC Broadcasting Inc. to construct five 45-metre (150foot) steel towers on an undeveloped lot in Point Roberts.

The towers would transmit South Asian radio station KRPI, AM 1550, which

broadcasts from studios in Richmond. The company currently broadcasts using antenna in Ferndale, Wash., but wants to relocate them.

The U.S. Federal Communications Commission last year granted a construction permit but a conditional use permit is still required from Whatcom County.

Residents on both sides of the border have been voicing opposition, but what makes Concerned Citizens of Tsawwassen particularly angry is the community doesn’t appear to even exist in the application.

The following are some of the calls of interest the Delta police responded to in the South Delta area between Tuesday, Oct. 15 and Saturday, Oct. 19: Tsawwassen • Oct. 15, 11:26 a.m., ferry causeway: Complainant reported she had taken the ferry from Sidney to Tsawwassen and then continued on to Alberta on her motorcycle.

When she arrived home in Fort McMurray she found her wallet missing from her saddlebag. The complainant reported the theft to the Edmonton police who in turn contacted the Delta police. Items in the wallet include credit and debit cards, identification and Canadian and U.S. cash.

• Oct. 16, 8:58 p.m., 1800-block of 56th Street: Report received that the former school building was unlocked on the southwest side and that there possibly squatters in the building.

Police investigated but no one found in the building.

• Oct. 17, 7:56 p.m., 1200-block of 56th Street: Two males entered the drug store and as one male distracted a clerk in the fragrance department, the other male selected several items and placed them in

Police located three males riding push scooters on the concrete pad inside the fenced area, having gained access under the fence. Youths warned regarding entering fenced area and sent on their way. Delta Works advised regarding the fencing.

• Oct. 16, 1 a.m., 4600block of 54A Street: Police located a group of males having a loud argument on their driveway. There was no physical fight and at least one of suspects appeared to be intoxicated.

Following a discussion of the issues causing the fight, the parties agreed to go inside. Police remained in the area to ensure there were no further problems.

• Oct. 16, 9:36 a.m., 4400-block of 46B Street: Complainant reported that sometime overnight his vehicle, which was parked on the street in front of his residence, was keyed.

• Oct. 17, 11:15 p.m., 12th Avenue and 50B Street: Police found a heavily intoxicated male shuffling along the street and identified him through his driver’s licence. The man indicated he had been in the pub watching the Canucks game. The man was too intoxicated to remain on the street and was transported to his home by police.

• Oct. 18, 8:15 a.m., 300-block of 56th Street: Sometime overnight someone attempted to steal the complainant’s vehicle by forcing the ignition. The vehicle had been left parked and unlocked in her driveway. Canvass of the neighbourhood proved negative.

• Oct. 18, 1:50 p.m., 1700-block of Tsawwassen Drive: Police stopped a vehicle that had the rear left brake light out. A police database query revealed the driver was to be served with a two-month driving prohibition. A query of the passenger indicated she had a valid driver’s licence from the Yukon. The driver was served with the driving prohibition and both par-

MURPHY’S LAW It seems appropriate next week’s Southlands public hearing is being held in a recreation centre, although it’s a shame it’s one that doesn’t have a scoreboard.

A public hearing is a necessary function in our governing process and many times it serves us well, allowing residents who feel impacted by a development proposal to share their thoughts in an effort to influence local decision makers.

When it comes to the Southlands, however, the issue is so well documented and so polarizing, the public hearing takes on a whole different vibe.

At its essence, it’s still a case of speakers at the microphone in five-minute allotments, but it’s got the feel of an election campaign where there’s a push to get the vote out.

Given that it’s impossible to quantify the arguments expressed, to determine that one is better, or more compelling, than another, a hearing of this sort often boils down to sheer numbers.

I’m being facetious here, but wouldn’t it be handy if there was a scoreboard that kept track of which speakers were in support and which ones were in opposition?

Heck, you could even use it to time them.

It sounds silly, I know, but you can bet both sides, as well as civic officials, will be keeping close watch on those numbers at next week’s hearing.

When it comes to gauging public opinion, whether it is through surveys, questionnaires, meetings, letters, petitions or other means, it almost always has a way of coming down to numbers.

How many times have you heard someone use a percentage — X per cent of the population wants to see this happen or not to have that happen — to support their position when it comes to the Southlands? Their argument may be sound, or not, but either way figures are used to justify it.

There’s certainly something to be said for eloquence, passion, logic and all those other laudable qualities that permeate the discussion, and I’m sure council members weigh all those factors too, but at the end of the day it’s hard to get away from the cold, hard numbers.

If 70 per cent of people feel one way, it would be darn near impossible, regardless of how convincing that other 30 per cent might be, for elected officials to side with the minority (presuming, of course, they want to remain as elected officials).

So as we get set to embark on another round of the Southlands saga, the public will finally get to have a say on a Century Group application that’s been seven years in the making. It’s time to stand up and be counted.

COMMUNITY COMMENT Next week Tsawwassen gets a re-run of a “movie” that was first shown in the 1980s. In the original picture, The future for Southlands, key features were a Vancouver developer, a farmer and a plan to have Venice-like canals running through 1,800 homes on 770 acres.

This original movie broke every imaginable attendance record! It brought on concerts and a plebiscite organized by residents with a greater turnout than at the election.

The vote was more than 90 per cent against development.

In the final days, the Century Group gained ownership by obtaining the land mortgage and foreclosing on the developer. Little serious farming took place following. In the late 1990s, 220 acres of the less

valuable land was sold to Metro Vancouver for about $8 million to enlarge the regional park.

In 2007, after some 18 months of consultation, the Century Group engaged a U.S. planner to conduct a charrette to determine how to build on this land. More compact than the original plan and with concessions to Delta and community, it still had 1,900 houses.

Opposition mounted again, and in 2009 the Tsawwassen Area Plan was put up for a rewrite, the most contentious part being agriculture and the Southlands. That plan ran three nights at a public hearing and then was withdrawn by the mayor, to be replaced by another plan created by staff, which also was withdrawn at a later public hearing.

The mayor then ordered a public opinion poll of all Tsawwassen residents, conducted by Ipsos Reid. The result again yielded more responses than voters at election time and showed 61 per cent opposed to any development on the land.

Then the mayor set up a summit with Century and others to work out a plan. Century was given until

July 2011 to come up with a plan, but it was still being negotiated and modified up to this month, all enroute to yet another public hearing that begins Monday.

The newest incarnation shows 950 housing units and more land donated to Delta. It offers bike paths and community gardens along with a market square, but none of this requires a housing development.

It features smaller houses, some on “stilts” to get above the sea level rise, years of sand trucks running back and forth, and assumes seniors will either want to shop in the market or walk to the town centre from Boundary Bay. Ken Cameron, formerly the senior planner at Metro Vancouver, put it well recently: “It’s not agriculture versus growth. It’s how you manage growth and how you use available land outside of agriculture.”

In my humble opinion, we need to keep all of Southlands zoned for agriculture. Let Century build some additional housing in the town centre where more density is allowed, and where it’s appropriate.

Don’t squander opportunity visionary developer offers

Editor: The silent majority supporting the Southlands proposal needs to speak out. Future generations will regret losing Sean Hodgins’ creative Southlands opportunity to a vociferous minority.

Imagine a Southlands where our children and grandchildren will farm and thrive near their parents’ homes in the area they love.

Hodgins’ ecological farm pocket village surrounded by his donated 425-acre urban farm/forest will be our living heirloom for future self-sufficient generations.

The strident NIMBYs intend to suppress the progress of these affordable

environmental cottages for our children. Tsawwassen has substantial reasons to trust and support our second generation developerinnovator.

The cynics want you to believe trivial short-term inconveniences to undermine Southlands’ compact neighbourhood. George Hodgins did kick up dust and diesel building all of our houses. My house has sheltered three families with seven children conceived.

Now these kids also need affordable homes in the Tsawwassen community they love.

The precedent-setting Southlands development will benefit the entire

region. Hodgins will raise the environmental standards of all area developers. His visionary development will also influence the unfolding TFN projects across Highway 17.

Free market real estate forces are our only opportunity to influence TFN developers. With visionary Hodgins advancing the Southlands, he acts as TFN’s major competitor.

We are impotent to affect TFN without the Southlands. The preloading seen now will become another typical suburb and mega mall with no farmland thanks to the NIMBYs. Let us not squander this opportunity.

Will taxpayers be left holding the bag to maintain that idyllic community?

Editor: Yes, once the Southlands is developed, traffic on 56th Street will be congested.

Yes, the land that was once in the ALR will be chopped up into less productive parcels. And, yes, the taxpayers in Delta will be shelling out to pay for the extensive infrastructure required.

These issues have been debated in our newspapers for months, but what has received less attention is: Who will be responsible

for maintaining the socalled idyllic community that Century Group has planned?

Left holding the bag after the developer decamps for the richer pastures of Surrey will be Delta council, who will be sending crews out to trim the trees, mow the lawns, maintain the stream and pond, drain the floods and provide for agriculture irrigation.

I remember well the gravel, cement, topsoil, dust and piles of building materials in the parking lot (taking up prime stalls).

Keep it agricultural

Editor: Please be advised that I am opposed to bylaws 7168, 7169, 7170 and 7271, and believe that all of the Southlands should remain designated agricultural.

Southlands will be strata title housing. Because of this designation, purchasers will be obligated to maintain common property, including such items as landscaping, to a standard they would not if the title were fee simple.

It will be no free ride to own a home in the Southlands, and Delta council should not bind future councils to this “progressive development.”

Something for everyone in compromise Editor: There are many things all Delta residents seem to agree on (save agriculture, wildlife, integrate the land into the community, etc.) regarding the Southlands and we are now debating how to accomplish those goals.

Century Group continues to work tirelessly consulting experts, citizens and our administration to address and reconcile the well-documented various interests.

I believe the current plan

addresses each one of the concerns in a very admirable way and to date no other viable plan has been proposed.

The open farming and hedgerows retain healthy habitats for wildlife in contrast to greenhouse farming. Small “green” farming plots avoid industrial farming with its admitted environmental problems while providing local food.

Limited housing on the least arable land provides the funding required to help

build the infrastructure to support the farming — and may even attract younger residents able to kneel down and farm! The plan considerately keeps green buffer zones to protect the neighbours from the construction phases.

Like all compromises, no one party gets all of their vision exclusively but there is enough natural wealth in the Southlands to share amongst the many stakeholders.

Looking forward to biking to beach Editor: Here is my 40th annual letter in support of the Southlands development.

(I don’t know how the antigrowth people manage to write every second week.)

As a long-time cyclist, I really like the proposal to provide bicycle paths through the farm area and down to the beach. For many years my husband and I cycled around Point

Roberts when we wanted to spend a quiet day in the country.

If the Southlands proposal goes ahead before we get much older, we would be able to ride down 4th Avenue and find the same peace and quiet.

We, and anyone south of 12th Avenue, could ride our bikes to the beach instead of having to drive.

We must not repeat past mistakes of building on low lying land

Editor: Delta is called Delta because it’s a municipality that’s built on a river delta, one that faces the Pacific Ocean, and we all know what’s happening to our oceans: they’re rising. So why is Delta entertaining any further development of low, flat land near our shores, most currently the Southlands proposal? I pity those who buy low shore land properties.

But there’s more than an ocean that’s going to rise four feet or so within our grandchildren’s lives:

The Southlands is prone to liquefaction during earthquakes. We live in an earthquake zone. Consultants hired by one side minimize the liquefaction that will occur, while other experts tell us the liquefaction will be far worse than minimal.

I pity those who buy property in liquefaction zones.

Metro Vancouver commissioned an engineering report, Sea Dikes and Alternative Strategies, that calls for our spending $9.5 billion over the next 100 years, not including inflation, on more dikes, higher

dikes, wider dikes, secondary dikes, barriers, breakwaters, sea gates and more.

Think of it: Four more feet of water between here and White Rock is a huge increase in the volume of water that will have to be fought during storms, especially storms that occur at high tide.

A Delta planner told me at a recent information session that we can anticipate 50 years of flood protection as plans stand now. A 50year span is a shortsighted plan in the life of a municipality or metro area. And in

50 years? Who knows?

I sense the Southlands proposal is being considered because development of Beach Grove, Centennial Beach and Tsawwassen Beach were allowed. Yes, development of these shoreline areas was allowed, but it was allowed before our planners and councillors realized the seriousness of global warming and the rise in the sea’s level that comes with it.

Old mistakes don’t justify new ones. Failing to learn from mistakes is insanity.

Editor: I love Tsawwassen and the very special neighbourhood of Boundary Bay that I have lived in for over 20 years. The Bay has been a safe haven where I have raised my children, forged lasting friendships and created great memories.

Boundary Bay is my neighbourhood but Tsawwassen is my community and is of equal importance to me.

As a result, it has saddened and irritated me to see letters to the editor from a vocal minority of Bay residents leaving the

impression the majority of Boundary Bay does not support the Southlands proposal. This is not my experience within the Bay. Last week was the tipping point. I received a hand delivered letter marked in bold “Boundary Bay Property Owner.”

In talking about the Southlands proposal, this letter states, “The proposed ‘connector road’ would open Boundary Bay to all of upper Tsawwassen while providing no benefit to us.”

This exclusionary view towards upper Tsawwassen can only create an unfriend-

tions.

A healthy community shares resources — it does not separate or wall itself off from its neighbours.

This bar the door, “it’s our beach” thinking is not in the best interest of Tsawwassen as a whole.

So to all my neighbours in Tsawwassen, know that as a resident of Boundary Bay I love being part of Tsawwassen. I, and many other Boundary Bay residents, fully support the Southlands proposal and the extensive benefits and access it could provide.

A high majority of Tsawwassen residents who commute to work outside this area encounter large volumes of traffic both going and coming. They know if approval of the Southlands happens, 1,000 or more cars will be added to 56th Street along with 2,000 or more when the Tsawwassen First Nation development is completed.

Add ferry traffic to this and very grumpy drivers will be asking, “Who put us in this mess?”

Development of the Southlands does not create utopia as suggested by some advertisements.

Driving down Boundary Road you will see fourstorey apartments where farmland once stood. These tall buildings will not mesh with the ranchers and twostorey homes in the area but stick out like a sore thumb.

Wounded on inside The Veterans Transition Network (VTN) honoured a group of military and emergency services personnel last week. Each of us has walked the front line of human conflict, despair, death, injury and war.

We survived and came home. We looked unscathed but we had been wounded.

We were honoured for our courage in facing the toughest adversary — operational stress injuries hidden inside of us. Rather than engaging in destructive behaviour that would harm ourselves and our families, we choose to honestly explore the mental baggage and emotional dragons that had come home with us from war with peer and professional support over a 12-day period.

The Royal Canadian Legion was the earliest supporter of this revolu-

tionary program, which originated with Dr. Marv Westwood at UBC in the late 1990s, long before much of anything formal was available to help a veteran with PTSD. Our Ladner Legion was an early generous supporter of the VTN and I took part in it in 2011.

It’s a mistake to think the Ladner Legion is simply a place for people to socialize.

Our guest speaker, Senator Romeo D’Allaire, reminded us the Legion, when no one else cared, kept his veteran father alive and their family relatively intact.

When you buy your poppy this year, remember the work the Royal Canadian Legion still does with a generous donation.

Jazzercise Richmond/ Tsawwassen got people exercising for a good cause last Saturday at KinVillage in Tsawwassen with a fundraiser for the MS Society of Canada. Between that event and another fundraiser in Richmond last Sunday, about $2,200 was raised with donations still coming in. Over 70 people took part in the events.

The Hannah’s Heroes Foundation is gearing up for its annual Fall Fundraiser.

Slated for Saturday, Nov. 2 at Beach Grove Golf Club in Tsawwassen, the yearly event is aimed at raising money to fund research into finding better treatments and a cure for pediatric brain cancers.

Tickets cost $50 and include dinner and entertainment. The festivities will include dancing with DJ little d, and live and silent auctions.

The Hannah’s Heroes

Foundation was established in September 2007 in honour of Hannah Hatlen, who was diagnosed with a rare form of brain cancer at age four and died a year later.

The foundation’s sole goal is to raise money and awareness for pediatric brain cancer. All proceeds from the Fall Fundraiser will go to research being done at the Child and Family Research Institute at B.C. Children’s Hospital.

he Portal’s first-ever theatrical performance takes place tomorrow with Hansel and Gretel and Other Tales.

“It’s a little bit spooky.

It’s a lot of fun folklore,” says director Claire Pollock, adding the show is definitely centered around the Halloween theme and is still family-friendly.

The other folklore tales include The Deer Woman and Dicey & Orpus.

The four cast members involved in the performance are all new, local actors, Pollock notes. Drummers and dancers will perform as well.

Preparations for the production began a month ago, she says.

“It’s been a lot of fun.

It’s definitely cool to work with a big variety of people.

It’s very interesting to get everyone’s take on [things].

They’re all new actors ... so it’s fun. The different questions they have are interesting.”

Halloween Horror Delta returns

Local Mistress of Darkness Robyn Balabanov is once again creating Halloween Horror Delta.

The latest incarnation of the spooky display in Ladner runs Halloween night only and is open for visitors from 6 to 9 p.m.

It will include a witch’s house with animated monsters, a new fireplace with a burning pumpkin, animated windows, two graveyards with custom-made gravestones, various static and animated creatures, a fullsized mausoleum and more.

This year marks the 12th edition of the haunted display.

Balabanov’s website, www.horrordelta. com, has been completely redesigned with new features like a section on Halloween safety and a blog.

“We will be discussing what will be unleashed and you will be able to see sneak peeks at behind the scenes elements. We also will be answering some of the ques-

tions I have received over the years from the guest books,” the site states, referring to the “Behind the Screams blog.”

Downloadable copies of background music used in previous years will be available while the site will also be hosting a live webcast of the setup and then continuing throughout the night from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Treats will be given out to trick-or-treaters in costumes.

Balabanov is partnering with the Delta Firefighters Charitable Society for the second year. Last year over $170 was raised.

Museum launches Now & Then Exhibit explores retrospective experimental journey

The Delta Museum has launched Now & Then – A Modern Historic View. The exhibit explores a retrospective experimental photographic journey, presented through photographic artwork featuring historical items from the Delta Museum and Archives

Society collections.

Working collaboratively with the Delta Museum, local photographers Rick Pelletier, Laurie Laing, Ronan Considine, Greg Schurman, Adina Shore, Tyler Garnham and Ali Roddam produced seven unique contemporary art-

works representing history from a modern perspective.

The seven photographers came together to collaborate on a shared love of history while staying true to their unique style. Each was invited to take items from the museum collection and imagine them in a modern

context.

Now & Then is currently on display in the Delta Museum’s Temporary Gallery, located in the heart of Ladner Village at 4858 Delta St., through to Jan. 31 2014. The museum is open Tuesday to Friday, 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Auditions upcoming for comedy The Sidekick Players Club is auditioning for its second production of the season, Maggie’s Getting Married, a hilarious comedy by Canada’s most prolific playwright, Norm Foster.

Auditions are set for Sunday, Oct. 27 from 1 to 4 p.m. and Monday, Oct. 28 from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Tsawwassen Arts Centre.

Callbacks (if necessary) will be on Wednesday, Oct. 30.

The play takes place in the Duncan family’s kitchen the night before youngest daughter Maggie Duncan marries smarmy realtor Russell after a whirlwind romance. Maggie’s big sister, bombshell Wanda, is home for the big day with her latest boy toy, actor Axel, who mother-ofthe-bride Cass is less than thrilled with.

Father of the bride Tom,

a wealthy dentist, is preoccupied with sex and mortality and concerned that his baby girl may be marrying the wrong man for the wrong reasons. As the family and their hangerson get progressively more tipsy following Maggie and Russell’s rehearsal dinner, Wanda comes to the sobering realization that she and her sister’s fiancé are more than intimately acquainted.

Maggie’s Getting Married, directed for Sidekick by Peg Keenleyside, will have 10 performances at the arts centre from Jan. 23 to Feb. 8, 2014.

Pair nears retirement — again Conductors still in schools as well as with Delta Music Makers Two long-time band teachers in the Ladner area are getting closer to retirement — again!

Margaret Behenna was the much-loved band teacher at Delta Secondary for over 25 years. She retired in 2007, but kept her conducting baton warm by joining Curt Jantzen in teaching an extra-curricular band program at elementary schools.

The two music conductors also lead the Delta Music Makers community band, a well-known adult group that will be performing a Concert Of Remembrance next weekend in Tsawwassen.

“The Delta Music Makers adult band is a labour of love that Margaret and I will keep conducting forever, but with the advent of the wonderful new Band 6/7 program by the Delta school board, our work in the elementary schools will begin winding down and retirement is beckoning, again,” says Jantzen.

Behenna says they are extremely supportive of the new mandatory Band 6/7 classes that have been implemented throughout the district.

“Perhaps our work inspired the school board to implement such a muchneeded comprehensive band program in the elementary schools,” speculates Behenna. “It would be nice to think that our work is recognized and that it was a

factor in the board starting this new program.”

Classes are still open for this extra-curricular band program for students in grades 4 to 7 who have no musical experience.

Classes take place in three Ladner locations: 7:30

a.m. on Wednesdays at Ladner Elementary, 7:30 a.m. on Thursdays at Holly Elementary and 3:15 p.m. on Thursdays at Hawthorne Elementary. Those with one year or more of training meet from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. on Thursdays at Hawthorne.

Jantzen and Behenna also run a similar twolevel program at Annieville Elementary in North Delta.

All classes are still open for registration.

In their other role with the Delta Music Makers, Jantzen and Behenna urge

Delta residents to attend the Concert Of Remembrance on Sunday, Nov. 3 from 2 to 4 p.m. at KinVillage Community Centre.

“Much of the music will make people laugh or cry,” says Jantzen, “and you will have a great time. The visuals on the screen behind the band will add poignancy to the music, and we finish off with pipes and band for a real tribute to our armed forces.”

The audience will enjoy participating in songs from both world wars. Entry is by donation and tea is served at intermission.

Master of Ceremonies, Vicki Gabereau, entertained everyone with her unique brand of humor. She brought to mind that Delta is an extremely caring community that recognizes the importance of such causes as the hospital.

The annual signature event is the Foundation’s largest fundraiser of the year. The gala raised just over $243,000, with $21,000 in gifts-in-kind, to support the Delta Hospital Foundation Results: Healthy & Growing Campaign. The Foundation announced it has raised $5.7 million for the soon to be launch Diagnostic Services Campaign. This campaign has a goal of raising $7.5 million to expand and enhance Delta Hospital’s Medical Imaging and Laboratory departments.

Local coach never gave up in fight against psoriasis JESSICA KERR Tuesday, Oct. 29 is World Psoriasis Day, but when Ladner resident Ray Crawford was diagnosed in the 1970s, few people had heard of the disease, including his own doctors.

“I can’t remember exactly when I got it,” he says, but he remembers noticing it while visiting his grandmother in the early 1970s.

He says she knew what it was because another member of the family, seven generations before Crawford, who is a coach with the South Delta Sun Devils high school football team, had suffered with psoriasis.

Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory condition and a common skin disease that affects about one million Canadians. Its symptoms are obvious — red patches of skin covered in silvery scales that can itch and burn.

The skin often becomes dry, cracked and bleeds.

Crawford’s psoriasis covered a significant portion of his body — his chest, back, elbows and knees.

“At first, I thought psoriasis was just something I had to grow into,” he says. “I hated it, but I thought I had to accept it.”

The visibility of the disease carries a certain amount of embarrassment.

As a football player in his early 20s, he often had to explain the red plaques covering his body to his teammates in the locker room.

“When I went on dates, I had to say, ‘You see this stuff on my arms? Well, it’s all over my body,’” he says.

Over the years, Crawford tried many treatments with little success. It started with traveling into Vancouver for six-hour treatments five days a week for six weeks.

The treatments required repeated showers and the application of a tar ointment.

It took decades of trial and error but Ladner resident, and South Delta Sun Devils coach, Ray Crawford has found that regular injections have helped clear up his psoriasis.

He says he remembers coming home feeling hopeful the time-consuming therapy would work.

Like many to come, Crawford was disappointed.

He tried at-home tar treatments, which he needed help applying to the hardto-reach spots on his back, oral medications and laser therapy, which cleared some of his psoriasis but left scar tissue in its place.

Despite repeated failures to find a treatment that really worked, Crawford refused to give up hope.

In 2006, he saw a dermatologist who suggested a new drug treatment.

The treatment requires injections of Stelara every three months, which can be done at home, and has all but cleared up Crawford’s psoriasis.

He says his psoriasis cleared up quickly after he started the injections.

“All of a sudden, one day it was gone,” he says, adding only a couple small spots remain on his back and chest.

While the treatment might not work for everyone, Crawford urges others living with psoriasis to never give up looking for the one that works for them. He even keeps his dermatologist’s business card with him at all times, to give out to fellow psoriasis sufferers.

“Fortunately, I finally found something that works for me,” he says.

“It’s important to remember that each one of us is an individual, and everyone is different. Never stop trying, always have faith.”

Even without their star player from a year ago and dealing plenty of adversity, the Delta Pacers senior boys volleyball team has the ability to be a major factor at next month’s B.C. “AAA” Championships in Kelowna.

With George Thompson now playing at Douglas College, the Pacers are relying more on their overall depth to put together another promising season. They shot up the provincial rankings after a second place finish at the high-profile UBC Tournament last month but only sit at .500 in league play thanks to a tough schedule and rarely being at full strength.

If it’s not Grade 12 standout Connor Barr dealing with knee issues, then it’s Mark Trotman’s duties as a member of the Delta Ice Hawks junior “B” hockey team or commitments for other players. The hope is to have everyone available for the upcoming Fraser

Valley Championships as the Pacers attempt to secure one of five B.C. berths up for grabs.

Besides Barr, the Pacers have received strong play from setter Clint Taylor, while Grade 11 Charlie Thompson has helped filled the void left by his brother.

MacKenzie Falk is another key first-year contributor.

There is one more opportunity to catch the team at home when Earl Marriott visits Ladner at 8 p.m. on Nov. 6 in Fraser Valley South League action.
