The Dayhu Group of Companies is constructing a pair of 400,000-square-foot buildings in the Boundary Bay Industrial Park. Dayhu COO Paul Tilbury says an unparalleled location coupled with unmatched building size makes the project attractive to distribution companies and others.

A huge industrial park is taking shape in East Ladner. More than 30 per cent completed, the Boundary Bay Industrial Park, adjacent to Boundary Bay Airport, is being billed as Metro Vancouver’s largest industrial development. “This is a first class development in an unparalleled location. In the past, options of this size have not been available and currently there are no options under construction or existing of this magnitude,” according to the Dayhu Group of Companies, the firm behind the project.
This artist’s rendering shows what the Dayhu development will look like once it’s completed. “BBIP’s location in South Delta, British Columbia is ideal for distribution users. This location provides proximity to
Deltaport, the largest container terminal in Canada, while also taking advantage of the first onramp to the new South Fraser
Perimeter Road.” Logistics firm Apps Express is the first confirmed tenant to sign. Paul Tilbury, COO of Dayhu,
told the Optimist the first phase of the massive industrial park is set to open next May and the final phase in 2015. He said there’s been much interest due to its ideal location. “It’s very difficult to find land masses that would enable the construction of two 400,000-squarefoot buildings, and therefore we found that there’s been interest by groups who have otherwise would have not been able to find permanent homes in the Lower Mainland,” Tilbury said. Sensible BC’s campaign in Delta South is entering the final stretch. Local organizer Ralph Howey couldn’t say exactly how many signatures have been collected so far in the riding but did say, “We still require hundreds more to sign the petition. “We are out canvassing every day, mornings in Tsawwassen at the Town Centre Mall and afternoons in Ladner in Trenant Square,” he said in an email to the Optimist. Sensible BC needs to collect the signatures of more than 10 per cent of the registered voters in each of the province’s 85 electoral districts by the end of the three-month campaign. The 10 per cent threshold in Delta South equates to 3,477 signatures. The initiative aims to force a provincial referendum on decriminalizing marijuana possession. A campaign bus made stops in South Delta earlier this week, while canvassing also took place outside the recent Southlands public hearing at the South Delta Recreation Centre. The campaign’s deadline for collecting signatures is Dec. 9.

PARK from page 1 to airport lands that do not have direct access to the apron or runways. The amendment widened the range of permitted industrial uses. The first non-aviation business to set up shop there was BC Fresh. Two years ago, Alpha Aviation, which has a long-term lease to operate the municipally-owned airport, received a proposal from the Dayhu Group of Companies to construct approximately 900,000 square feet of commercial distribution warehousing. Rather than lease the site on Churchill Street from Alpha, Dayhu requested to purchase the 18.4-hectare (46-acre) parcel from Delta,

which was granted. The municipality was also able to negotiate a deal with the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure to undertake highway improvements requested by Dayhu. The company purchased the site for $23.5 million and also provided several million toward services and amenities. The land sale generated cash that was divided between Alpha and Delta with all the proceeds going back into the airport. The Dayhu project is certainly eye-popping, consisting of two enormous buildings, 156 loading docks and 200 trailer parking spaces. A civic staff report earlier this year to Delta
council notes the commercial distribution centre will generate numerous benefits for the municipality, including an annual tax draw of approximately $1 million, development cost charges of approximately $2 million and the creation of approximately 1,000 ongoing employment opportunities. As well, proceeds from the land sale allowed major capital improvements at the airport that would otherwise not have been feasible. According to Dayhu, vacant industrial land for port and logistics related uses in the region will be exhausted within 10 to 15 years. Pointing to a growing shortage of industrial land in the region, the company states that “high quality and well located sites will be developed first, leaving
less desirable locations for future development.” Making Delta all the more attractive is the South Fraser Perimeter Road, a highway project that played a major role in Dayhu’s decision to come here, according to the industrial real estate firm Avison Young’s latest industrial overview report for Metro Vancouver. In that report, Tilbury said that as a result of the SFPR, Dayhu is “bullish on Delta and the SFPR corridor.” Should the port deliver on its short- and long-term expansion plans at Deltaport, there could well be an extended run of growth in the geographic area along the SFPR, and the announced replacement of the George Massey Tunnel only serves to
enhance this,” he stated. He added there’s no doubt all of those factors will lead to a “positive shift” south of the Fraser River in demand for industrial lands. He said the greatest challenge would be the availability of significant land assemblies for large distribution facilities to compete with those that have successfully attracted tenants into the Alberta market. The Avison Young report noted Delta has the most industrial product under construction in the region, due primarily to the first phase of the Boundary Bay Industrial Park and a separate development on Annacis Island, both of which are being built on speculation, as is the majority of industrial construction in Delta.

Minister insists ALR not going anywhere Pat Pimm offers assurances as core review underway BY
SANDOR GYARMATI

The province is not planning to reduce or eliminate the Agricultural Land Reserve and the commission tasked with overseeing it, insists the minister of agriculture. Pat Pimm offered that assurance in a recent interview with the Optimist when discussing the government’s core review of all ministries and their agencies, boards and commissions, an analysis that includes the ALR and Agricultural Land Commission. The review, to be completed by a cabinet working group next year, was announced this summer, prompting some to warn the mandate for “reducing red tape and unnecessary regulations that hinder economic development” could result in a weakening of the ALC as well as make it easier for industrial development in the ALR. The review comes as Energy Minister Bill Bennett, the minister responsible for it, admitted marginal ALR land in northern and eastern B.C. could be excluded to encourage economic development. However, noting all government operations should come under review every few years, Pimm

Agriculture Minister Pat Pimm says he has been given a mandate by the premier to esnure the ALR is working for British Columbians. said there’s no appetite to reduce the role of the South Coast farm region, which produces 85 to 90 per cent of the province’s net farm receipts. “On the flip side of that is that they also have the most pressure from growth. So, I think the ALC has been doing a pretty good job in that region and I don’t foresee many changes, but we’re still working on some stuff at this point. It’s all about how to make things run better.” The minister, who has been touring the province, noted the ministry is looking for input during the review. “I have a mandate letter from the premier that actually tells me we have to make sure the ALR and ALC is actually working for British Columbians. That’s
something we were going to be looking at anyhow. Then the core review came along. It basically looks at every aspect of government and making sure they are functioning properly and doing the right job,” said Pimm. Pimm has had his own issues lately, coming under fire after it was revealed that before he became agriculture minister he acted on behalf of a constituent wanting to build a rodeo on the ALR land, as well as criticized by New Democrats for asking the ALC to defer major reserve boundary decisions until the core review is completed. Delta South MLA Vicki Huntington noted an ALR review is unnecessary, saying it appears to indicate the province is softening its support for agricultural land.

TFN shares municipal vision to preserve Brunswick Point site BY
JESSICA KERR
jkerr@delta-optimist.com
It appears the Tsawwassen First Nation intends on purchasing a property in Brunswick Point and shares Delta’s vision of preserving the parcel. In a letter to Mayor Lois Jackson last month, TFN Chief Bryce Williams said the land, known as the wedge parcel, has meaning for the Tsawwassen people. “The ‘wedge parcel’ has meaning to us — both from time immemorial, as a site of one of our traditional fishing villages, but also as the site of a historic cannery, which provided both employment and, at one time, nearby housing for many of our members,” Williams wrote. Once occupied by the Brunswick Cannery, the 1.67-hectare (four-acre) site is surrounded by Canoe Pass to the north
Only
and agricultural uses to the west, south and east. The province wants to subdivide the parcel, where no farming is currently taking place, into two lots, but no building or site improvements are planned. Once subdivided, the province intends to sell one of the lots, while the other one will be retained for flood control and public access. Under its treaty agreement, the TFN has first right of refusal to buy the property. The province’s subdivision application, which Delta council has yet to make a decision on and has deferred twice, created concerns for civic politicians, Delta staff and some residents over the future of the land. In early October, Jackson sent letters to Williams and Minister of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations Steve Thomson asking that the
parcel be preserved. In her letter, the mayor said if TFN agrees to preserve the wedge parcel in perpetuity as a heritage site, environmental habitat and dike, including public access and flood protection, Delta would advocate for the sale of the land to TFN for a “nominal amount.” In his response, Williams said the TFN is interested in working with Delta in recognizing the heritage of the site. “TFN has no current development plans for that site, but shares Delta’s interest in ensuring public access and flood protection, and may be interested in seeking future Fraser River access from the dike,” he wrote. The property is in the Agricultural Land Reserve and, Williams said, the TFN has no desire, or ability, to remove the ALR designation.

Fire dep’t looks to expand medical role
Agreement sought with Victoria to allow firefighters to administer enhanced medical aid JESSICA KERR
Delta’s fire department is working toward becoming one of the first in the province to have firefighters licensed to provide enhanced medical assistance when responding to a 911 call. Following a meeting at the Union of B.C. Municipalities in September, Delta sent a letter and draft first responder consent and indemnity agreement to Health Minister Terry Lake.
Fire Chief Dan Copeland said Lake is the third health minister Delta has met with on this issue. “We want to be able to practice to the level of our licence,” Copeland said. If approved by the provincial government, the agreement would allow Delta firefighters with the appropriate emergency medical assistant training and licence to administer enhanced medical aid during emergency situations, while working alongside paramedics or before their arrival.
“This is ensuring that our citizens get the best response,” Copeland said. He said when dispatched at the same time, firefighters arrive at a scene, on average, three minutes before paramedics. Under the proposed agreement, firefighters would be able to provide medical assistance to patients before paramedics arrive. He said firefighters would be able to update paramedics en route on the condition of patients. “We can provide them updates from a bet-
ter trained perspective,” Copeland said, adding that in the event of an emergency situation, the mere arrival of first responders can have the ability to help calm people down. “We’re looking at enhancing our levels,” Copeland said. Currently, firefighters are able to provide some basic medical response, including CPR and spinal management. Under the proposed agreement, firefighters would be trained to administer pain relief medication, take blood pressure and use

pulse oximeters, administer IVs and provide airway management. Today when someone calls 911 they are asked to specify if they need police, fire or ambulance. It’s only after more questions are asked that other first responders are dispatched to an incident. The new agreement would see the fire department dispatched simultaneously during a 911 call involving a medical emergency. Copeland said the enhanced training would come at no additional cost to taxpayers as the department is working to build it into the current training budget. Two other fire departments, Prince George and Sun Peaks, which is just outside of Kamloops,
Dan Copeland Fire chief have received permission for firefighters to provide emergency medical assistance. Both of those departments participated in pilot projects through the Emergency Health Services Commission in 2011 and 2012. Copeland said firefighters and paramedics work well together on the ground, and the agreement is meant to augment, not replace, the current services offered by both agencies.

TED MURPHY
MURPHY’S LAW There’s absolutely no denying that Delta council angered and/or ignored a sizable chunk of Tsawwassen’s population by granting conditional approval to the Century Group’s controversial rezoning application for the Southlands earlier this month. Prior to the decision, and now in the wake of it, people on the wrong side of that outcome have offered civic politicians alternatives to the current plan, but the advice has been, well, a little on the bizarre side. Even the briefest of scrutiny shows the options being furnished have a hard time holding water. One suggestion has been to save the Southlands entirely for agriculture by relocating what’s been termed an otherwise laudable Century proposal to acreage Delta owns at the entrance to Tsawwassen. Putting the project at the edge of town would certainly reduce both the construction traffic and noise, as well as mitigate much of the ongoing vehicular impact. It would also leave the Southlands alone, but if the goal is preserving as much farmland as possible, I’m not so sure paving ALR land that’s being leased to an organic farm operation is the way to do so. There’s also been a suggestion that if there has to be growth, it should be accommodated in the town centre where that type of higher density development is appropriate. The argument makes sense until you realize recent municipal efforts to add density to the core, either through increased building heights or the upzoning of the Highlands neighbourhood, were shot down by an angry public that didn’t want that kind of development. There’s been another suggestion that the housing component for the Southlands be moved from the eastern portion of the property nearest Boundary Bay to the western edge along 56th Street. It makes sense to build along the site’s busiest border and the road access from that spot is much more direct, but putting housing on the best of the soils while trying to farm the worst of them flies in the face of efforts to make the Southlands a viable agricultural operation. The common thread in these suggestions is those offering them say they aren’t necessarily opposed to the project, or development in general, they’d just like to see it go somewhere else. Many bristled when the NIMBY label was thrown around liberally at the recent public hearing, but when you hear the so-called alternatives to the Southlands project it’s difficult to come to any other conclusion.
Farming offers common ground in contentious public hearing MIKE SCHNEIDER
COMMUNITY COMMENT If we were to take anything away from the recent Southlands public hearing it would seem that complexities around farming would stand out. Many of the 400 or so speakers to address mayor and council over the course of the hearing spoke to soil conditions, costs of drainage and irrigation, the types of crops that can or cannot be grown on parts of the land, and many other aspects of farming and agriculture. Indeed, farming turned out to be the common ground amongst the hats and the shirts. On the final day of the hearing we heard from councillor and farmer Ian Paton who described in great detail some of the problems that are associated with farming in Delta. We heard from Brent Kelly who has been farming the land for sev-
eral years. We heard from him that this year he had to leave $75,000 worth of spuds in the ground because that particular section of land was flooded in September. We also heard words and phrases like trade-off, compromise and precedent. Every farmer prepares as best he or she can for weatherrelated issues and Mother Nature will always win the big battles, but it is clear that adequately prepared infrastructure for farming will at least assist in winning some of the smaller ones. Farming is an activity fraught with risk and many of us pretend to understand it but really, we know little about the business. The average age of farmers is now approaching 56 in B.C. and I am wondering how armchair farming philosophers intend to attract new farmers to grow the $10 billion sector to $14 billion as is envisioned by the provincial government. What enterprising young family would take on the risk of acquiring ALR land to farm? These new farmers, wherever they may be, now have to buy the land for $100,000 an acre and clear and prepare it at an additional cost of $5,000 an acre? What soil-based

crops would they grow and how does this really relate to the issue of food security? If you are like most farmers in the lower Fraser Valley, you would look at blueberries or cranberries if you were interested in making a living and hope to one day pay off your loans and mortgages. In the case of the lower Fraser Valley, there are hundreds of acres set aside in the ALR that are now thriving birch forests. One only has to drive between Vancouver and Delta to note firsthand how “prime farmland” is not being adequately managed at all. Let’s remember that official community plans and regional growth plans are just that — plans. It is good to have a plan but if changes have to be made to benefit a wider group, then that plan has to be given fair consideration. Trade-offs have to be made to achieve greater collective goals. In the case of the Southlands, a land use precedent has been established that could serve as a model for planning growth strategies in B.C., Canada and elsewhere. If we are serious about issues like farming and food security, then we should make best efforts to find the compromises that make sense.

Dinner Dance Looking to Metro Vancouver Christmas Friday, November 29th to protect us from council
More than just a head count goes into political decisions Editor: Re: It’s another sad day for democracy, letter to the editor, Nov. 13 After reading the letter from Victor Souliere, it was obvious that some basic understanding of democracy should be shared with your readers. First, nowhere does it say that majority rule is the cornerstone of democracy. In fact, because our process chooses to consider multiple points of view, understand the needs of communities and chooses to reject popular opinion (where necessary), we help make the democratic process justifiable. Decisions are far more than a binary count of votes and since many of our community-based decisions happen over some period of time, our decision framework is always changing. In the case of the Southlands project, successive deliberations over 25 years is by any measure a substantial commitment to due process and people on all sides of this issue
have had more than enough opportunity to contribute. Choosing to move forward after demonstrated compromises is what is best for the majority of people. The Southlands example teaches us the process works (albeit very slowly) and that the community will be better off for our effort. Notwithstanding the democracy lesson, it should be noted that in this case the majority did rule. As is often the case, the overwhelming number of people who did not participate (likely over 80 per cent of Delta residents) voted by their absence for development, entrusting professionals and elected officials to make choices on the people’s behalf. If by Souliere’s estimate 40 per cent of concerned citizens were also in favour of the current proposal, then the actual pro support number is even higher. I’ll defer to statistics professionals to work out the actual numbers, but clearly the majority has spoken. Chuck Hamilton
to allow development of an at-risk area. Do council members not believe in rising sea levels? I can only assume Mayor Lois Jackson and councillors Robert Campbell, Scott Hamilton, Jeannie Kanakos, Bruce McDonald and Ian Paton will eagerly act as modern-day Hans Brinkers and plug the dike with their fingers should that become necessary. In the case of Southlands, hopefully Metro Vancouver will protect Delta from its own council; some government body needs to care about the big-picture and the future. Once farmland is developed, we can’t get it back. Jim Kerr

alerts and will require additional drainage, dikes and pumping stations to exist along with a never-ending cost to maintain that infrastructure. It’s time to look at rezoning and densification of Tsawwassen’s upland areas rather than creating further suburban sprawl. Delta has huge traffic issues already, only to be exacerbated by developments on the Tsawwassen First Nation lands, at Tsawwassen Springs and Marina Gardens in Ladner. There is only a promise of a new bridge across the Fraser (not even a design yet) and public transit in Delta is laughable. Where are the plans for improved transit or for future higher capacity transit, such as light rail? It seems incredibly irresponsible of Delta council

Editor: While a new study out of the University of Northern B.C. highlights the alarming loss of agricultural land in B.C. and our media covers the controversy and outrage over a rodeo ground built on designated agricultural land in Fort St. John, here in Delta our council approves the Southlands development. Is Southlands actually farmland? Dubiously removed from the ALR, for decades developers have told us it is not agriculturally productive and must be built upon, yet the latest proposal has miraculously concluded that a portion is indeed viable for farming. Southlands is outside the Delta urban containment boundary on land that is barely above sea-level with a high water table. The area is subject to seasonal flood

Take mental illness out of the closet
Editor: Re: Mental health support needed, Nov. 8 We all know that loneliness is the biggest epidemic in every community, especially in a community such as ours, where mental illness is so hidden. There is still no drop-in-centre for our people to just drop in, a home away from home, so people who cope with a mental illness every day know they are not alone. So many of our citizens in the community have such centers, including
seniors, the physically handicapped and now those with alcohol and addiction problems. No illness lasts only from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday to Friday. It is evenings, nights when they cannot sleep and the weekends that are so difficult for them. Why do our people have to feel like no one cares? Why is there so much stigma still attached to this illness? Why can’t we accept that it is OK to have an illness of the mind when we treat every other illness
of the body as a natural condition? Let’s take this illness out of the closet and create a caring, knowledgeable community. We all know governments are great at cutting services, not creating them, so it is up to each and every one to help create a place where people can go to alleviate the terrible loneliness that surrounds them. Red Nose offers great way to give back over holidays
Editor: Usually at this time of the year I wonder what I can do to help others to show my gratitude for having such an amazing life. When pondering what it means “to make a difference,” we often find the concept hard to fit within the confines of our hyperbusy schedules. In theory, it sounds good and worthwhile, but it is difficult to put into practice. However, making a difference happens all the time and we all do it. For the past 12 years my husband and I have volunteered with Operation Red Nose, not only in the organizing of the program but in driving and dispatch. We have met wonderful people, had lots of fun and have been happy to help the community. I was looking at our stats for the last 11 seasons of Operation Red Nose here at Delta Gymnastics. This is a safe driving program that our club has been offering
in our community (both Delta and Richmond) over nine nights during the holiday season. Since 2002, we have provided almost 4,700 rides to people and their vehicles. With an average of three people per vehicle, this equates to about 14,000 people benefiting from the program. The number is impressive, but what does it mean? How did that make a difference to anyone’s life? The best answer has been given repeatedly by Delta police Chief Jim Cessford: “The best stat that we will never know of is the number of lives that were saved simply because people that shouldn’t be driving were off the road.” It’s not only those whom we safely drive to their destination that we directly affect, but it is all those clueless drivers on the road that could by chance be in front, behind or across from an unsafe driver or maybe even an innocent bystander
or a person crossing the road. The ripple of all those who benefit from the program is too large to measure and capture in a simple statistic. So what does it take to make a difference? It’s offering one night to drive home someone who is enjoying their Christmas party, their night at the pub or a family gathering. Yes, you might be a bit tired the following morning (the shift starts at 9 p.m. and ends at 3 a.m.) but that night possibly will mean a world of difference to anyone who shared the road that evening. If you are curious about getting involved with this program, please see the details at www.operationrednosedelta.com. The service will be provided on Nov. 29, 30, Dec. 6, 7, 13, 14, 20, 21 and New Year’s Eve. In fact, come on New Year’s Eve for a great dinner, good friendships and a night of driving. Carlene Lewall

Tsawwassen Bridge Club is shutting down after four decades
It’s the end of an era. On Monday, after 40 years in the community, the Tsawwassen Bridge Club will play its last hand. “It’s really sad to me because there are so many people in South Delta who play bridge,” said long-time club member Jean Groome. The club has met at the
South Delta Recreation Centre most Monday nights to play since 1973. Groome said the club has seen a decrease in attendance over the years, with usually only five or six tables playing at once these days. In its heyday, the club would see upwards of 20
tables going at once and even in recent years there were at least 12 tables. The decrease in attendance paired with an increase in rent prompted director Richard Dunn, who has run the club since 2000, to pack it in, she said, adding no one came forward to take over the

Church is more than place of worship
Ladner United serves entire community and renovated building will provide even more amenities BY
JESSICA KERR
jkerr@delta-optimist.com
Ladner United Church is closing in on its fundraising goal for the renovation and restoration of the 120-yearold structure, and after raising hundreds of thousands within the congregation, it’s appealing to the wider community to help reach the final target.
The church has just $400,000 left to raise, said Rev. Jim Short, to ensure it will be debt-free once the new building is completed. Construction is well underway and expected to be completed by next spring. The church, constructed in the Gothic Revival style of architecture, has served the community for well
over a century. It opened in 1893 as St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church and served that congregation until 1925 when it merged with the Ladner Methodist Church and became Ladner United. The building has undergone some changes over the years. It was raised in the 1930s to allow for the construction of a basement. A
hall was added to the south of the original building in 1938 and in the 1970s, a large, single-storey addition was constructed on the west side. Short said the renovation and restoration was planned to make the building a significant addition to the community, not only to preserve and showcase its heritage, but also to serve

as a resource for the community at large. “We plan to share this with them (the community),” said Michelle Fischer, who is helping spearhead the fundraising efforts. “It’s not just a place of worship.” Short said in designing the project the church added many community elements: a community garden, kitchen and shelter room, which can serve many purposes, as well as flexible meeting spaces. He said the aim was to make it a functional community space, not just a place for worship and church business. Short also stressed the decision to preserve the heritage of the building was made with the community in mind. If the congregation just wanted to build a new church, he said, it would have been cheaper and easier to knock down the existing building and erect a modern church. However, he said, the church saw the importance the community puts on its heritage and wanted to invest in restoring and honouring part of Ladner’s past. “We know that’s impor-
tant to the community,” Short said. “This is a community project. This is really a community project being undertaken by Ladner United Church.” The sanctuary, which is part of the original building, is being expanded and restored. Modern wood paneling has been removed to reveal the original wainscoting, the original fir floors will be restored and many windows have been saved. The exterior has been restored and the expanded building is being finished to match the look of the original church. Short said the church is “very, very thankful” to its neighbours who have had to put up with, and will continue to have to endure, the noise and congestion that comes along with a construction project of this size. “Our neighbours have been so, so understanding,” he said. To make a donation to the Ladner United Church building fund, call the church office at 604-9466254 or visit www.ladnerunited.org.

‘Selfies’ on the rise The Oxford Dictionary people say the word of the year is “selfie” as its usage has increased 17,000 per cent. A “selfie” is a self-taken picture on your cell phone and circulated on social media. A “selfie” means I can circulate within seconds a self-taken picture of myself all around the world. It also means an inappropriate “selfie” can be circulated beyond its intended audience with disastrous, life-changing consequences. Rob Ford, Toronto’s broken mayor, appears to be an expert on getting your “selfie” in the news. Despite wise counsel and professional advice, he seems to see only the picture he takes of himself and refuses to see what others see. As repugnant and sad as this

unfolding drama is, we are drawn to it like flies to honey. Four stories on the mayor preceded the one story on the typhoon in the Philippines online today. Ford told CBC he has had a “come to Jesus” moment. May it be so! I hope it’s a “Jesus, I need to spend the rest of my lifetime walking and talking with you because I have some stuff to sort out.” Come to think of it, that would be good not just for Rob Ford but for all of us. Don’t just “come to Jesus” occasionally when in trouble or difficulty but with our real “selfie” spend a lifetime walking and talking with him. Jim Short can be reached at minister@ladnerunited.org.

Local Rotarians continue efforts to eradicate polio
Rotary International has been leading the charge to eradicate polio throughout the world dating back to 1985. Since its involvement over $8 billion has been raised and polio has been eradicated in all but four countries. The campaign is in its final stages and it’s hoped the battle can be won in the next three years. If so, it will be the second time in history, after smallpox, that man has eliminated a disease across the world. Joining Rotary in its battle against polio is the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, which has already contributed over $500 million and announced recently it will match two for one for every new dollar Rotary contributes to the polio eradication campaign up to $35 million per year through 2018. During its recent fundraising drive, members of the Rotary Club of Tsawwassen donated over $3,800 to the End Polio Now Campaign. With the matching grant from the

SDSS Interact, a Rotary-sponsored group of Tsawwassen high school students dedicated to service within the community and abroad, held an End Polio Now awareness campaign designed to educate
a generation that has not been touched by the disease and may not know much about it. To help in the fight to eradicate polio, you can make a donation to the Rotary Foundation through the Rotary Club of Tsawwassen by contacting foundation chair John Charbonneau at 604-8182840.

Take two hours to save life
Three sessions of CPR boot camp being offered in South Delta next week BY
DAVE WILLIS
dwillis@delta-optimist.com
November is CPR Month in Canada and Lisa Ochoa is offering a chance to learn the life saving skill next week in South Delta. The former City of Richmond lifeguard, who runs her own lifesaving and first aid business, is holding three CPR and lifesaving
boot camps next week. She says CPR is a basic life skill that both kids and adults can learn. “Once you know it, and once you understand what to do and the steps involved, then you have a skill for life.” The two-hour sessions will cover CPR and choking procedures for adults, children and infants. Ochoa
will also explain what defibrillators are and how to use them along with basic home safety and prevention information. She says it’s rare somebody comes in just because they want to learn the skills; more often it’s because of a work requirement that people learn CPR. Eighty per cent of sudden cardiac arrests, heart
attacks and major emergencies happen in the home, but survival rates in Canada are low because of the lack of bystander-initiated CPR, Ochoa says. The first CPR and lifesaving boot camp will be held at Ladner Baptist Church (5624 Ladner Trunk Rd.) on Monday, Nov. 25 from noon to 2 p.m. The second will be held

Child minding will be available with a cost of a non-

Aird’s Kid Zone Daycare (located within Cliff Drive Elementary in Tsawwassen) encouraged parents to donate a new toy to help fill 10 stockings in the Tsawwassen Town Centre Mall’s annual Stockings For Kids program. The children delivered the donations Thursday morning to the mall where Christiann Munro, Christmas programs co-ordinator with Deltassist, met the children to thank them for all their help. In addition to Stockings For Kids, Tsawwassen Town Centre Mall is also accepting miscellaneous new toys. All donations may be dropped off at The Smoke & Pop Stop by Nov. 29 in order to be distributed by Deltassist through its Toy Depot.

Celebration of Life Tree to help people honour lost loved ones
Ombudsperson talking senior care in Tsaw.
GORD GOBLE
Ombudsperson Kim Carter was in Tsawwassen earlier this month to provide a progress report on her report, The Best of Care: Getting it Right for Seniors in British Columbia. Carter’s report was released in February 2012 and contains 143 findings and 176 recommendations to the Ministry of Health. She was brought to the community by the Delta Seniors Planning Team.
December can be one of the most difficult months of the year for those who are grieving the death of someone they care about, so for the past 21 years, the Delta Hospice Society has displayed a Celebration of Life Tree. The program provides the community an opportunity to honour and remember the life of someone who has died. A tribute card is available to write a person’s name on and it is then placed on the Celebration of Life Tree at the Harold & Veronica Savage Centre for
Supportive Care in Ladner. Another card can be taken home as a memento. Placing a dove on the tree becomes symbolic of the love and memories that we carry in our heart. “This is such a sensitive time for many families and we have this special tree at the centre as well as our volunteers to share these memories with,” says Nancy Macey, executive director of the Delta Hospice Society. Throughout December, the Celebration of Life Tree fills up with hundreds of tributes and stories are
exchanged between families and volunteers. Helpful information about how to cope with the holidays and grieving is also available at the centre. The Celebration of Life Tree will be up from Dec. 2 to 20 and the centre welcomes visitors weekdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Donations are always appreciated but not required. The tree will be up until the first week in January so family and friends can visit over the holiday season. For more information, call 604-948-0660 or visit www.deltahospice.org.

Local musicians team up for annual toy drive concert BY
DAVE WILLIS
dwillis@delta-optimist.com
Local musicians Jerry Doucette and Kenny Boychuk are doing their part to put a little more cheer into Christmas for less fortunate kids. The duo is hosting the fifth annual Deltassist Christmas toy drive show at the Tsawwassen Legion tomorrow night. “It’s a great feeling to know that some boy, some girl is going to have a decent Christmas because we put this on every year and it works real well,” says Doucette, who’ll be headlining the event. The toys go to children from lowincome families through Deltassist’s annual Toy Depot program. Deltassist is a non-profit social services organization. Last year’s show was a resounding success, generating a lot of toys and a lot of fun, says Doucette, a Juno
Award winner. “It was incredible. The first four years have been really good. I’m just so happy about it.” Doucette says he’ll be doing some rockin’ blues, his Mama Let Him Play stuff and “a whole lot of dancing tunes” at the show. Boychuk, a keyboard player, will join him. “He’s one of the best Hammond B3 players in Canada.” The show will feature special guests Brickhouse and the Delta Police Pipe Band along with several other bands and local guests. “We hope we can bring some joy to some young fella, some young girl, during Christmas,” says Doucette. The toy drive show is scheduled for tomorrow at the Tsawwassen Legion, 22-1835-56th St., with entertainment starting at 6 p.m. Admission is a new, unwrapped toy (approximately $20 value) or an equivalent cash donation.

Linda Kidder and Dave Pickell will perform some festive tunes in Ladner next month with the latest installment of the live@5005 concert series. Kidder and Pickell, who knew of each other for years while working in the music business but didn’t start hanging out until
2011, will play music from their CD Christmas-ish. The album includes two original tunes (Don’t Let Santa Know and Something Special) and a duet with Juno-winner Norman Foote (who will also be at the show). “They’re all really beautiful arrangements,” says Kidder, an accomplished singer and bass player who has worked with art-
ists like kd lang and Gary Fjellgaard. “I just said one day, ‘Why don’t we do a Christmas CD?’ It just kind of came into my mind,” she says. Pickell, a pianist, is a “fantastic musician,” says Kidder. He graduated from UBC as a classical pianist in the mid-70s and has worked extensively in the interna-

An oasis of luxury in the Arabian desert BY
HANS TAMMEMAGI
Optimist contributor
A week immersed in super-sized Dubai city — the world’s tallest building, an indoor ski hill (in simmering desert heat!), artificial islands, a sevenstar hotel — was exhilarating, but also exhausting. Needing to recover, I headed along a modern highway into an empty expanse of beige sand dunes. Then a narrow sand-blown road led deep into the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve. Finally a clump of trees with tents scattered among them like a Bedouin encampment appeared like a mirage. I had arrived at the Al Maha Resort & Spa deep in the Arabian desert. At the reception building, I was greeted by name as I stepped from the vehicle — I love Arab hospitality! After check-in, I wandered through the reception area and spa, admiring the geometric and floral designs of the Arab décor and architecture.
Persian carpets, Bedouin jugs and Omani doors melded with modern design. The resort owns the largest collection of antiques in Arabia. It felt like an art gallery and I could see why Sheikh Mohammed, the ruler of Dubai, often comes here. Then a golf cart carried me past elegant villas with large canvas sails for roofs, which were spaced far apart to ensure privacy. Entering mine, I found a king-size bed, Arabian antiques and an enormous bathtub. An easel with art supplies stood in a corner. Outside, a sprawling wooden deck and a personal infinity pool offered long views over the desert. I had never imagined such delicious luxury in the middle of a desert, and almost felt guilty. In the afternoon, Hillary, a naturalist, took me out to explore desert ecology. She let about half the air out of the Land Rover’s tires, and said, “You’ll be surprised how this helps us navigate over sand.”
PHOTOS BY HANS TAMMEMAGI

Within minutes we were out of the oasis and into sand dunes with attractive sculpted ridges and rich shadowy ripples stretching to the horizon.
Now and again we spotted delicate little Arabian gazelles gazing nervously at us. Hillary pointed at a sandfish lizard, which immediately dug itself into
the dune in a flurry of sand. Shortly after, an oryx, an antelope with long, straight horns, walked up a dune and posed against the sky. Later in the day, as the sun dropped low in the sky, I met Shadeem, a big, muzzle-wearing male camel. Our Arab guide, who wore a kandura (long white cloak) and guthra (headscarf), made Shadeem kneel down and I clambered awkwardly aboard. We formed a caravan, eight camels nose to tail, and bounced far into the desert until nothing was visible except sand. Dismounting, I enjoyed soft, warm sand scrunching between my toes. Behind a dune, a table had been elegantly set with drinks and hors d’ouevres. Nice touch, I thought, as I meandered among the graceful dunes, sipping sparkling wine and nibbling a date. Too soon the sky darkened, we mounted up and rode back. After a rest, I strolled through the warm dusk to the resort’s restaurant, Al Diwaan. The maitre’d greeted me with a smile and by
name (of course!), and led me to a candle-lit table. I was soon munching happily on Arabic bread and baba ghanoush. Next came a Bedouin platter of grilled jumbo prawns, lamb kofta, hammour (grouper fish) and a chicken skewer. I ate slowly, savouring the succulent offerings as long as possible. A hedonist to the core, I ordered the Yemeni nougat glace for dessert. Under a sky ablaze with a million stars, I strolled to my “tent” and, enveloped in total silence, fell sound asleep. Next morning, I lazed by the pool sipping a hearty Arabic coffee from a tiny cup and listening to an avian orchestra, including a dove coo-coo-coo-ing like a mother comforting her child. When we left for the airport, I felt as though I was emerging from the Tales of the Arabian Nights. Rested and relaxed, I headed home. Travel Writers’ Tales is an independent newspaper syndicate.

Whether your taste is classic, modern or eclectic, visitors to Gallery 1710 will find over 150 original creations from more than 50 talented local artists. There will be watercolours, acrylics, oils and everything in between, all under one roof. Devils have eye on bigger prize South Delta wins Fraser Valley title and is favoured to do the same at provincials next week BY

MARK BOOTH

How much has the expectations of the senior girls volleyball program at South Delta secondary school changed in the last 12 months? Enough that a Fraser Valley Championship triumph against the province’s second ranked team generated little in the way of excitement. A year after celebrating the school’s first-ever Valley title, it was more like a short business trip to the Langley Events Centre Monday night to look after another item on the checklist towards repeating as B.C. champions. The Sun Devils took out the Riverside Rapids in four games and will head to Penticton next week as the overwhelming favourite at the 16-team tournament. “I think that’s exactly what it is,” said South Delta coach Dan Burgess. “The thing is we have five returning players and this was just a step to the provincials and winning that banner again. They want that more and I think we can do it this year.” After defeating the Rapids two weeks ago in dramatic fashion to capture their Red Surge Classic. The Devils dominated the final from the outset. They won the opening set and had a 17-12 lead in game two before Riverside came storming back for a 25-20 win. South Delta responded to the adversity with a decisive 25-11 game three victory and then closed out the match in similar fashion. Burgess had been trying some things with his lineup before sticking his big guns on the attack for good. Cassidy Pearson moved from middle to power hitter where she was joined by

Plus, Zoe (Mydansky) did a real nice job filling in
the middle.” Pearson, who was a junior call-up late last season after an injury to Christine Howlett, has emerged as one of the province’s top players. She was named the tournament’s most valuable player while the UCLA-bound McNamaras added to their ever-growing trophy collection with all-star awards.
The scary thing is all three girls are only in Grade 11. The South Delta roster also features Howlett, Lauren Shirley, Laura Findlay, Mieguen Butcher, Samantha Loiselle, Maria Starko, Anika Klassen and Courtney Bogress. The Sun Devils will begin pool play next Thursday against Pinetree, West

Vancouver and a still to be determined wildcard opponent. Earlier trips this season to Las Vegas and Victoria were in part to help with the task in hand next week. “We wanted them to get use to playing out of their comfort zone,” added Burgess. “We were still at home in a way (last year in Port Coquitlam) where this time it’s really only going to be just us. It makes it tougher to win and we’re only putting two in a room to make sure the girls get plenty of rest. “We will definitely be the favourites and we should handle it well with the five returning girls plus the twins playing in so many high profile (beach volleyball) events. I do think there is more parity than last year and it’s going to be a dogfight in a couple of the games.”
