The billion-dollar South Fraser Perimeter Road is scheduled to open in its entirety in a matter of days, changing traffic patterns for local drivers, particularly those in Tsawwassen.

The 40-kilometre, fourlane route along the south side of the Fraser River will stretch from Deltaport Way in South Delta to 176th Street (Highway 15) in Surrey, with connections to highways 1, 15, 91, 99, and the Golden Ears Bridge.

The easternmost section in Surrey opened months ago, while the stretch between Tsawwassen and Ladner will open to traffic Sunday in order to undertake paving on what is now the old Highway 17.

A ribbon cutting to open the entire length of the highway hasn’t been set, but could come as soon as next week, depending on weather and last-minute work.

The South Fraser Perimeter Road’s official name is now Highway 17, while the old Highway 17 in South Delta has been renamed Highway 17A and has become a local road.

Drivers heading out of Tsawwassen via the highway will find themselves on the SFPR and as they head northeast they will encounter several interchanges and intersections, including: * Highway 99 interchange near 72nd Street in Delta. * Full movement intersections at Tilbury and Sunbury business parks in Delta, with a connection to Highway 91 and Nordel Way east of the Sunbury intersection. * Tannery Road Interchange in Surrey. * Full movement intersection at Bridgeview Drive (130th Street) in Surrey. * 136th Street intersection in Surrey providing access for the industrial area on the north side of SFPR. * 176th Street/104th Avenue intersection in Surrey and connections to Highway 1.

From Deltaport Way to Hwy. 1 The South Fraser Perimeter Road is a 40-kilometre route that will stretch from Deltaport Way in South Delta to the junction of 176th Street and Highway 1 in Surrey. they’re looking to access the George Massey Tunnel: Option 1: SFPR (new Highway 17) — A slightly longer route, but quicker due to additional lanes, faster moving traffic and no traffic signals. The routing is as follows: Access Highway 17 from 56th Street as per today, continue along Highway 17 as it shifts east to the new alignment, exit using the new two-lane off ramp to Highway 99 northbound.

These two lanes continue along Highway 99 until the Highway 17A interchange and are barrier-separated from Highway 99 traffic.

Highway 17 traffic merges with Highway 99 traffic as per today. HOV traffic can access the queue jumper lane to the tunnel at the Highway 17A interchange as per today.

Option 2: Highway 17A — A slightly shorter but slower route due to the traffic signal at Ladner Trunk Road. The routing is as follows: Access the current Highway 17 from 56th Street as per today, then exit Highway 17 using

the one-lane off-ramp to Highway 17A. Continue along Highway 17A, which becomes two lanes after 34B Avenue. North of Ladner Trunk Road, follow road signs that will indicate one right lane for exit to Highway 99 northbound and one through lane to River Road. The HOV queue jumper ramp will remain.

Ladner drivers will continue to use Highway 17A to access the tunnel and will also likely use the old highway to visit Tsawwassen.

The SFPR, however, will provide both Ladner and Tsawwassen drivers quicker access to Highway 1 and the eastern suburbs.

Pot campaign fails to get needed signatures BY

Over five per cent of registered voters in Delta South signed the Sensible BC petition, according to the group.

Sensible BC, which for the past three months has been campaigning to trigger a provincial referendum on decriminalizing marijuana possession, wasn’t able to collect the signatures of more than 10 per cent of registered voters in each of the province’s 85 electoral districts by Monday.

The Sensible BC website stated it succeeded in 20 districts, came close in five others, got over halfway in 23 and got less than halfway in 37 districts.

The 10 per cent threshold in Delta South equated to 3,477 signatures.

Local organizer Ralph Howey said a lack of volunteers and not having an

Delta isn’t sold on new B.C. recycling program

Delta is opting to take a wait-and-see approach before participating in a controversial new provincial recycling program.

Mayor Lois Jackson announced Monday the municipality won’t join the Multi-Material B.C. residential stewardship plan for packaging and printed paper until the true costs are known and service levels to residents can be assured.

There is no anticipated financial gain for Delta in the first year of the program, said Jackson, who noted more time is being taken to analyze the risks and benefits.

“We have one of the best and longest running curbside recycling collection programs in the region,” said Jackson. “We need to take the time to fully understand and analyze the ramifications of joining MultiMaterial B.C.’s program before we decide to make a change that could impact our residents and jeopardize the recycling progress we have made so far.”

The mayor said one of Delta’s main concerns about joining is the elimination of glass, plastic bags and

Glass currently accounts for 30 per cent of all material collected, so to maintain the current level of service, Delta residents would have to sort these materials into a separate box to be independently collected by Delta.

Jackson said Delta is also concerned about entering into a services agreement that is heavily weighted in Multi-Material B.C.’s favour, which includes a number of risks to Delta that could result in additional costs to taxpayers.

Two years ago, the province announced it would make industry responsible for recycling of packaging and paper, with a goal of raising the recycling rate

from 50 per cent up to 75 per cent.

Multi-Material B.C. was established to develop a stewardship plan to collect, process and resell the recycled material in the industry-paid program. It’s to begin next spring.

Cities had until Nov. 30 to decide if they would join and accept payments from Multi-Material B.C. to act as recycling contractors. Cities would also be responsible for delivering the materials.

Remple, which is Delta’s current curbside collection contractor, has a contract in place until 2018.

Delta’s decision not join means it won’t have another opportunity to do so until 2015.

Laura Dixon re-elected school board chair BY

Laura Dixon was reelected as chair of the Delta Board of Education Tuesday.

It’s the second year as chair for Dixon, first elected to the school board in 2008.

At the inaugural meeting of the third year of the board’s three-year term Tuesday night, trustees unanimously elected Dixon to return as chairperson and Val Windsor to the position of vice-chairperson.

Dixon then expressed her

sincere gratitude to all those throughout the school district who put forward their very best effort to make a difference in the lives of students.

“You should all know that trustees travel throughout the year to every corner of the Delta School District, and at every event and celLaura ebration we attend, trustees are thrilled to see how staff and students model our values of caring, respect, responsibility, excellence and building community,” she said.

Dixon took the time to thank all members of the senior management team for their continued dedication to realize the district’s vision to be a leader for innovative teaching and learner success.

Investigation revealed the bullying resulted from a situation where the suspect felt he had been ripped off by the complainant.

The administration of the school was informed of the situation and both boys were spoken to regarding their negative behaviour.

The parents were also advised of the situation and asked to monitor and report any continued issues.

• Dec. 5, 3:55 a.m., English Bluff Road: A vehicle was reported on the front lawn of a residence.

The intoxicated female driver was located in friend’s car a short distance away.

The suspect indicated she had swerved to miss an animal. She also admitted to consuming a small amount of alcohol an hour and half prior to the collision. The driver was given a 24-hour roadside suspension and her driver’s licence seized. The owner of the vehicle, the mother of the driver, was contacted and advised her vehicle had extensive damage and had been towed by Roadway. Property owner was also contacted regarding damage to his property.

• Dec. 8, 1:37 a.m., 1300-block of 56th Street: Complainant reported that an unknown male had slapped him across his face, claiming the complainant had stepped on the toe of the suspect. Police investigated but the suspect had already left the area on foot.

• Dec. 9, 12:24 p.m., 1100-block of Fairway Views: A report was received that sometime overnight the right rear passenger window of the complaint’s vehicle had been smashed. An empty purse, which had been left on the back seat, was stolen.

Ladner • Dec. 2, 4:33 p.m., 9500-block of Highway 10: A found wallet that had been given to the gas station attendant was turned over to police. The wallet is a small black cloth foldover and contains Care Card, B.C. driver’s licence, debit and credit cards.

Phone messages have been left on numbers located in the wallet. Property sent to exhibits at police headquarters for safe keeping.

• Dec. 3, 10:55 a.m., 5000-block of 47th Avenue: Complainant reported she had left her backpack on the bleachers in the park for an hour and when she returned

her two cell phones had been stolen. The phones where both described as white and silver in colour with an approximate value of $1,500. The serial and international identity numbers were added to the police information computer system.

• Dec. 3, 3 p.m., 72nd Street and Churchill Drive: Complainant approached police indicating that a suspicious female had been parked for the past five hours at the intersection.

She was seen observing and taking notes on his employees and trucks working in the area. Police spoke with the suspect who indicated she was taking photos of birds and airplanes, but would not show police any of her notes nor would she explain why the information being recorded was private.

Police suspect the female might have been collecting data for a competitor of the complainant.

• Dec. 4, 3:50 p.m., 5200-block of Crescent Drive: Report received from complainant that her grandson was out of control and yelling outside her residence. Police investigated and found the situation arose as the result of the grandmother throwing water at her grandson as he would not get ready for a meeting he was to attend after school. Both parties apologized for their actions and went their separate ways for the evening.

No assault or damages occurred.

• Dec. 8, 3:15 p.m., 4600-block of Evergreen Lane: Suspects entered the canopy of the complainant’s truck by punching out the lock and stole several power and hand tools valued at $1,600. The theft occurred sometime overnight in the parkade of the apartment building. Damage to the canopy: $300.

• Dec. 8, 5:11 p.m., 5100-block of Ladner Trunk Road: An employee in the bargain store reported he had observed a suspicious male. When an alarm in the store went off, the employee approached the male who produced a fruitcake and orange juice from his backpack for which he had not paid. The employee also observed a new boxed Black & Decker drill in the backpack but it was not from the store. Police investigated but the suspect had left by foot and a patrol of the area proved negative.

MURPHY’S LAW It’s news because they’ve extended industrial options on a big chunk of Delta farmland for another year, but it strikes me this is really a 50-year-old story.

Back in the 1960s when a superport was being planned for Roberts Bank, the theory was that upland acreage would be required to support port operations. The provincial government then expropriated more than 1,600 hectares (4,000 acres) that became known as the Roberts Bank back-up lands.

Given the port’s only tenant through the first quarter-century was Westshore Terminals’ coal facility, which didn’t have the need for upland support, the back-up lands pretty much sat in limbo.

After about 30 years in Victoria’s hands, many of the parcels were eventually sold back to the original owners, while another chunk was set aside to satisfy treaty negotiations with the Tsawwassen First Nation.

Although welcomed by those in the farming community, the timing of the return of the land was peculiar given the Deltaport container terminal, the type of facility that does require upland support, was just beginning to operate.

Fast-forward the better part of two decades and it’s no surprise that much noise is being made over the need to convert farmland for industrial purposes.

The TFN, with its expanded land holdings, has stepped in to fill that void to a certain extent, but given the extended options, it’s clear that more is desired.

We should be a half-century smarter than we were back in the 1960s when it comes to logistics and upland support, but it’s hard to believe the land mass in the shadow of the port will remain untouched, particularly with a second three-berth container terminal in the planning stages.

There’s little doubt that farming in Delta faces many challenges today and a further erosion of the land base doesn’t bode well for the industry’s critical mass.

The land also serves as wildlife habitat, so replacing crops with warehouses and rail yards in an area of international significance is definitely a step backwards.

However, you’ve got to wonder whether those valid concerns can withstand the unrelenting economic pressure being exerted everywhere, including on governments that are not only keen to put people to work but to also expand trading opportunities.

Fifty years ago it was envisioned that more than 4,000 acres of industrial land would be found adjacent to the port.

I don’t think we’ll hit that figure, but something tells me we’re inching in that direction.

COMMUNITY COMMENT The tree is up, the lights are twinkling in the yard and the cards are in the mail. I’ve even managed to get some shopping done. I would say that our house has a decent handle on the season, which is saying something, believe me.

I have had this sensation that I have been missing something though. Is it a decoration lost in storage? An unlisted gift item?

Christmas can be a stressful and anxious time for everyone but it has been my experience the single most effective way to power through the season is to surround yourself with children so you can appreciate your own recollections of the holidays of yesteryear.

Eighteen-year-olds aren’t as interested in the festivities and traditions as they used to be and that is what is missing at our house.

Don’t get me wrong, we are having

fun, except in a more adult way.

I am somewhat sad in knowing we haven’t had an empty wrapping roll sword fight for a few years.

And, we haven’t had to use special Santa gift wrap so there won’t be confusion as to who got what from whom. Those days are etched in mind though and that’s comforting.

On Christmas morning we will not be waking up at seven to check out what Santa left in our stockings. Rather, we will wait until sleepyhead pours herself out of bed before we force feed her bacon and sausages.

Long gone are the mornings of playing with dinosaurs and making creations out of plasticine amongst the paper-strewn living room floor.

Whoever said, “Christmas is for kids,” got it right. I have many lucid childhood memories of the big day, but I think it is the parents who have total recall on the Christmas front.

I can remember each one with our daughter, and fondly recall the Christmas Eve moments reading together around the fire, the morning breakfast feasts and the present openings from Tickle Me Elmo to iPhone and everything in between.

year,” and not with the in-laws, cramming us all around a couple of tables in an interesting evolution of seating arrangements, including booster seats and high chairs, did, and still does, make for delightful chaos. Throw a few dogs in there and you have Christmas in a bottle.

Things have worked out great for the extended family the past few years. My mom now comes out to Tsawwassen and we feast at my youngest brother’s home a couple of blocks away. I cook the turkey at our house and cart it over to Dave’s at dinnertime.

The best thing about this scenario is there are still lots of toys to play with my young niece and nephew and I am looking forward to that. I hope Santa gets them a hockey net because that would be really cool for Uncle Mike!

This is an “on year” for the Schneider family, so I am looking forward to absorbing the festive pandemonium. Uncles and aunts, brothers and sisters and cousins all, and a mom for the ages, primed for a couple of days to count our blessings. (Miss you, dad!)

Gov’t officials recognize that new hwy. sign is confusing Editor: Delta citizens need to congratulate themselves!

My office (and I suspect the Ministry of Transportation) received so many calls regarding the confusing South Fraser Perimeter Road signage near Tsawwassen that I sent rather pointed emails to the ministry saying changes to the signage should happen — lest there be chaos on the new highway.

This week officials with the SFPR project visited my

office and actually agreed your comments had been helpful and the directional signage would be changed.

Kudos — and our thanks — to officials who listened.

During the meeting, we also learned the changes to the section of old Highway 17 at the new Ladner overpass will require a complete closure of the highway. The road needs to be properly cantilevered and the only way to change the grade is a full closure and reconstruction.

The closure will require a detour at Deltaport Way for Tsawwassen-bound traffic. All ferry traffic will be routed from Highway 99 to the new road and should not interfere with local traffic.

It is extremely important you read the ads in the paper today: this happens next week and it is critical we all understand the changes.

Editor: Re: Addressing poverty goes well beyond doling out tax dollars, Publisher’s Perspective, Dec. 4 I was somewhat taken aback by what appeared to me to be a snarky tone to this article so I looked up the report in question, the 2013 Child Poverty Report.

There is no argument about the fact that B.C. has the highest rate of child poverty in the country or that this province needs to have a strong economy. A strong economy provides the means for the province’s citizens to enjoy comfortable and fulfilling lives.

But the quality of life of the people depends upon how that wealth is distributed.

No political party can be pleased that a province as abundantly wealthy as B.C. has the highest level of child poverty in Canada — 19 per cent, compared with the national average of 13 per cent. This is not an issue of partisanship. We all share this fact.

It is particularly noteworthy that 31 per cent of these children in poverty “live in families with at least one adult working full time.” I believe working families deserve better. The First Call Report recommends

continuing to raise the minimum wage, and other measures, as ways of helping families.

Similar steps have worked in other jurisdictions with governments of different political philosophies, such as Newfoundland, and Quebec, as well as Britain.

I cannot comment on their sense of humour, but using disparaging language to describe the authors of this report and First Call’s 95 partner organizations does not contribute constructively to addressing this problem.

Panel review needed for port expansion plan

Editor: Recently the City of Surrey passed a motion in opposition to coal imports to the Fraser Surrey Docks based on deficiencies in the Port Metro Vancouver environmental impact study primarily based on PMV’s health impact assessment.

Our own Delta council, in its wisdom, has demanded the Canadian Environmental Assessment

Agency do an independent environmental assessment panel review on the Roberts Bank Terminal 2 port expansion proposal. Many of us have been requesting this for months.

SDSS is making plans to mark four decades 40th anniversary celebrations to be held next spring BY

Planning is underway for a special celebration in 2014 to mark South Delta Secondary’s 40th anniversary.

A committee of teachers and grads is hard at work trying to get the word out about the celebration, likely to be held next May 10. It’s a big task reaching thousands who graduated from the Tsawwassen high school as well as its former staff.

“There’s about a dozen of us and at this stage there’s assigned tasks we’re running around after and formulating a plan and making contacts,” said Julie Lymburner, a fine arts teacher at the school and member of the committee.

In just a few weeks, well over 500 people have joined the committee’s Facebook group (South Delta Secondary School’s 40th Anniversary).

Originally called South Delta Senior Secondary, the school opened its doors in September 1973, graduating its first class of 250 students the following June.

The 53rd Street high school opened at a very different time in Delta, during a period of huge population growth following the opening of the George Massey Tunnel years earlier.

At that time, Tsawwassen already had a junior secondary so the senior high school co-existed next door for a couple of decades.

In 1994, the two schools merged to form South Delta Secondary and eventually the junior secondary building was demolished.

teacher Brian Outerbridge, who was part of the school’s first graduating class of 1974. He began teaching at Tsawwassen Junior Secondary in the early 1980s before moving over to SDSS after the amalgamation.

SCAN WITH TO REVEAL PHOTOS He said a lot of grads have parents who are also grads at the school. In fact, he has taught kids whose parents are his former classmates.

Outerbridge said it’s clear students today are much different than years ago.

“You can look at the pictures to see how the kids have changed physically.

Students today are definitely different than when I went to school,” he said.

“Then just look at the impact of technology on the world and you don’t have to look too far before you see computers that weren’t here, kids walking around with cell phones and cell phones used in class. Ten years ago, the library would have had lots of TVs, but not any more.”

Lymburner agreed, saying the electronic transmission of information has also meant a lot less paper for students and staff.

Outerbridge said paper report cards are also a thing of the past at the school.

“On the flip side, school is still school,” Lymburner added. “By and large, we’re still looking at bricks and mortar and bells ringing and we haven’t quite moved out of that paradigm, but I wouldn’t be surprised if that

came to an end.”

The first celebration next spring is going to be a daytime, family-friendly gathering, likely a sporting event followed by a barbecue run by current students.

The evening event is still being contemplated but will likely include musical entertainment.

Advent peace As I come to the end of the second week of Advent, the four-week period of waiting and preparation before the season of Christmas, I have been buoyed by considering hope (week one) and challenged this week to consider peace.

I first considered my personal relationships and have reflected how I can be a peacemaker, and then how I can maintain peace within. But with news of former South African president Nelson Mandela’s death, I am challenged to look at peace globally.

Jesus didn’t come as the Prince of Peace just so I could have peace in my heart, but as the title implies, that political structures would be affected by love and that peace with justice would be the watchword among Jesus’ followers.

The Prophet Micah calls out to

me, “He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.” (chapter 6, verse 8) Mandela endured injustice, and during his 27-year imprisonment under a racist regime, promoted forgiveness and reconciliation. How do I participate in unjust structures?

How can I work for peace?

In considering peace, I must also consider truth, love, forgiveness and reconciliation. And rather than grow tired and cruise Facebook, I will commit, once again and with God’s help, to do the work of acting justly, loving mercy and walking humbly.

A Ladner man currently in the Philippines has been volunteering with typhoon relief efforts there.

Winterizing your external plumbing system is the most important job if you live in areas that freeze in the winter. The simple fact that water expands when frozen has caused countless problems for homeowners when temperatures dip below zero. Ignore this job and you could be faced with flooding, water damage and thousands of dollars worth of plumbing bills. Why do I need to maintain my treadmill?

ANSWER: If you work out hard, so does your fitness equipment. Much like a vehicle, a treadmill, and any piece of fitness equipment, needs a regular maintenance program to help keep it functioning at optimal levels.

At this late date and as of December 13th,2013, all Strata Corporations must have either commissioned their Depreciation Report or have held a vote to gain approval of a deferment by a 75% majority.

The Deferment vote must occur annually until such time as a Depreciation Report is commissioned.

There are not statistics available to the public but it is our rough estimate that some 50% of strata Councils voted to defer commissioning a Depreciation report to allow the council more time to gather information and study the impacts of ordering a Depreciation Report.

The market decided on what percentage of the strata council market would defer and not a piece of legislation.

It will also be the market who decides on what the implications of having or not having a Depreciation report will be.

It is anticipated that the down the road purchasers who look to purchase a strata unit will become leary of those complexes who have continually opted out.

The purchasers themselves will most likely demand transparency and feel more comfortable purchasing a unit in a complex that has already been provided with a depreciation report.

It is also anticipated that Mortgage insurers such as CMHC or GENWORTH may in the future feel a stronger comforter level on the risk for those complexes that have a deprecation report versus those that do not.

In the meantime, the legislation and deadline to have a Depreciation Report is so fresh that markets have not yet aligned to anticipated levels as noted above. What is clear, is that as time goes by, the market will clearly demand a Depreciation Report as part of the purchase process. Those who have their reports are anticipated to have their market values impacted positively. You can make your own conclusion on the impact of market values for those condominium complexes that do not have a depreciation Report?

he holiday season has arrived and many South Delta households are carrying on a favourite tradition: putting up Christmas lights.

Jason and Lindsay Dault spent about a week working on their display at 505 Tralee Cres. in Tsawwassen, heading outside for a few hours at night after putting their three young kids to bed.

“A string here, a string there. It’s becoming a bit of an addiction now,” says Lindsay with a laugh.

“We’re like, ‘Oh, we need another one right there, it’d look awesome!’”

A lit up Santa Claus and reindeer on the roof is a highlight of their display.

“That was our big purchase this year. That’s the big addition,” she says.

They estimate there’s “easily” 5,000 lights in their setup.

Jason says he’s “loving the savings” on LED lights, because the “old school ones” were expensive.

“We just hope it brings some smiles to people’s faces and brings on the Christmas cheer,” he says.

decorated with lights, tinsels and ornaments, snow men and more.

Beer says her favourite feature is probably two flurry machines, which basically shine a light on a disco ball that reflects and makes it looks like it’s snowing on the house.

The display includes between 6,000 and 10,000 lights.

“I think it’s really good for Christmas spirit when people see it,” she says, noting they’ve got two nephews who like to come visit to see the setu p.

They’ve received a few anonymous thank you cards in the mailbox as well over the years, she adds.

Rob McLean’s Christmas setup includes 7,000 lights choreographed to music

at 4915 Weaver Dr. in Tsawwassen.

Music includes Christmas favourites like Jingle Bells, Carol of the Bells and Dominic the Italian Christmas Donkey.

Planning for the show started in July, notes Linda McLean, Rob’s wife.

“It takes a lot of time to synchronize the lights to the music,” she explains.

The display also features a new eight-foot Season’s Greetings sign, four-foot stars and cascading snowflakes. The display is dedicated to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (jdrf.ca).

The show can be heard on 87.9 FM and runs from 5 to 10:30 p.m. on weekdays and until 11 p.m. on weekends.

Well on Your Way Don’t let December and the holidays throw you off the rails for your food and fitness! You worked hard to get to where you are, so don’t toss it for some shortbread and eggnog.

Instead, use these 10 easy tips that Risse and I (your Go Fit Gals) came up with to dodge the December bulge: Stick to a routine You can’t wish for fitness to happen, you have to make fitness happen. Just because it’s the holidays, don’t let that stray you from what you have been doing.

Research has shown us that it’s not willpower that keeps us going, it’s habit.

So, maintain a regular workout schedule, continue with your weekly cleaneating meal prep and stick with it.

Stay hydrated Dehydration often disguises itself as hunger, causing you to overeat. By staying hydrated you will feel full, energized and flush out the toxins.

Exercise first thing in the morning Get your workout in before life, work and errands can get in the way.

Or alternatively, work out right after work, but before you get home.

Don’t save your calories for the special event You know who you are!

These are the people who won’t eat all day so they can eat at the party “guiltfree.”

By doing this you will cause your blood-sugar levels to drop dangerously low and this can do permanent damage to your body. Low blood-sugar levels are also a top trigger for cravings and overeating.

Studies have shown that by not eating regularly throughout the day you are more than likely to eat twice as much in the evenings.

This means your 2,000calorie day could turn into a

4,000-calorie night.

On the day of a party, or one that you know you will indulge in, do a big leg workout. Perform a hard leg workout, or any circuit or high intensity interval workout with weights.

These types of workouts will not only torch a ton of calories (helping to balance out the extra calories you will be consuming later that day/night), they will also boost your resting energy expenditure by up to 11 per cent — and for up to 15 hours afterwards.

Skip the alcohol Just kidding, we are not total party poopers! But, if you are going to drink, do it Go Fit Gals style by keeping your drinks light and alternating them with a glass of water in between.

the tropical town of Puerto Escondido, my husband Kevin and I struggled with some big questions.

It started each Mexican morning: Should we eat perfectly-ripe mangoes and bananas with yogurt and fresh-from-the-marketsqueezed-oranges? Or a soft-boiled egg from a local hen alongside a crisp buttery piece of toast? Or, all of the above?

Should we sit on the balcony with Iggy, the resident iguana, or dine inside with the slow whup-whup of the ceiling fans? Or, maybe just finish our coffees and walk to one of the nearby cafes for huge platters of huevos rancheros served up with fresh hot tortillas?

It became more confusing by the minute. Should we shower before we did our sandy-hot beach walk, or after? Did we have enough limes for our margaritas for the evening ritual of watching the sun sizzle into the Pacific?

There were even bigger decisions to make, but luckily I had an inside secret.

A few months prior to our trip, I had made my first visit to Puerto Escondido to stay with fellow travel writer Michele Peterson. We stayed in her breezy condo overlooking the flashing turquoise ocean.

Michele, having visited and then owned property in the area for many years, had the scoop on where to go, what to see, what to do and when to do it. It was fabulous to have someone who knew everything there was to know about a place.

Thrilled, I flipped my brain into neutral and followed in her wake.

A few months later, Kevin and I moved into her condo (while she was back in her Toronto home).

Suddenly, it was up to me to be the one-in-the-know.

There was no way I could remember everything she’d shown me. Where on earth was that hole-in-the-wall cafe with the live music? Or what was the name of the guy who guided the mangrove kayak tour?

But Michele is not only a part-time resident of Puerto, she is also the creator of the

Puerto Escondido Travel Essentials app. For $2.99, I became an instant local.

Puerto app in hand, I, too, had all the answers. It was Kevin’s turn to follow me as I swanned about town like a local, secure in the fact I was on the cutting edge of the Puerto action. I knew where to go, what to do and who to see.

Where to find the best fish tacos? No problem.

Without her virtual help, this question would have crippled my brain.

With no direct flights servicing this little city of 55,000, Puerto has been largely overlooked by the tourist junket. This, of course, is precisely its attraction. It missed becoming yet another beach town made up of generic fancy resorts (with those nasty resort prices).

Instead, Puerto attracts backpackers, surfers for some seriously consistent waves, ex-pats for its cheap lifestyle and local-area Oaxacans looking for a little beach time. There are no fancy high-rise condos or other grand mega-malls.

This place is the real deal, complete with chattering palms, crowing roosters and beach bungalows.

When a beach town starts attracting backpacking surfer kids, you know that yoga can’t be far behind.

Add in all the aging boomers who want to stay limber, the increasing Italian ex-pat contingent, and suddenly there are yoga centres popping up between the little mom-and-pop corner stores.

But which yoga centre is the best fit?

There are other questions. With so many beaches, which one do you choose? And most importantly, is there a good masseuse in town?

Michele spends a lot of time in Puerto, so all the info is continually updated.

I’ve always wanted to travel like a local. Who knew it was this easy?

Canadians streaking into holidays B.C. Major Midget Hockey League team heads to Prince George this weekend with five consecutive wins BY

The Greater Vancouver Canadians are rewarding themselves for their best stretch of the season with a rare Christmas at home.

Typically, the B.C. Major Midget Hockey League team is headed to Calgary during the holidays for the Macs Tournament which gets underway on Boxing Day. However, a slow start to the season basically took them out of consideration for the prestigious event.

Instead of other tournament options, including the Richmond Minor International in their own backyard, head coach Phil Alalouf has decided to give his team a rare week off.

“At the time of the decision for the Mac’s (tournament) we were sitting in eighth place and we needed to be in the top five,” said Alalouf. “It was upsetting at first but I think we have all come to realize the chance to stay home (for Christmas) this year isn’t a bad thing.”

After a perfect pre-season that led the unrealistic expectations for a young team that is carrying a whopping nine 15-yearolds, the Canadians got off to a 4-8 start in league play

and were hit with a rash of injuries.

At one point, seven regulars were out of the line-up, including assistant captain Phoenix Worth who suffered a serious shoulder injury in the second game of the regular season back on Sept. 22. The veteran blueliner still doesn’t have his full range back and may require season-ending surgery in the new year.

When the other injured players finally returned, the Canadians showed what they are capable of with a 4-3 win over leagueleading Okanagan back on Nov. 17. They haven’t lost since — sweeping series against the Kootenay Ice and Fraser Valley Thunderbirds to climb above the .500 mark 11-10-1 for the first time since week one. Thanks to plenty of parity in the league this season, the record is good enough for fourth place yet five teams are within five points as Greater Vancouver heads to Prince George this weekend for two games against the eighth place Cariboo Cougars.

Nicole was named tournament MVP and Megan a first team all-star.

The girls also agreed to a scholarship offer from UCLA where they will be part of the school’s sand volleyball program in September 2014.

Delta Gymnastics men’s head coach Mike Hood is in Japan this weekend to serve as a judge at the 2013 Toyota International Gymnastics Competition.

Hood is part of the Canadian contingent that includes gymnasts Robert Watson, Ken Ikeda and Zachary Clay. The two-day event, behind held in Nagoya, features nine competing countries including Germany, Hong Kong, Korea, Uzbekistan, Vietnam, Japan, Brazil and Great Britain. There are just seven judges in B.C. with the qualifications to be an official at this meet and Hood was only one chosen to represent Canada.

“I am very honoured to have been selected as a judge for this competition and to attend this international meet as part of the Team Canada’s coaching staff,” said Hood. “I’ve been in Japan before and it is one of my favorite places to go.

“This is an opportunity for me to visit several training facilities to observe how other clubs and athletes train. It helps me understand contemporary gymnastics better as new rules continue to be implemented.”

Delta Gymnastics is supportive of Hood’s role at the international event.

“Mike’s participation in this event is very prestigious and we are very excited for his accomplishment. It speaks well of the quality of coaching in our facility. This provides him with great exposure to the gymnastics community within our country and at the international level,” said Ana Arciniega, Delta Gymnastics Executive Director. “We are very proud of him and look forward to the stories he will bring back from the event.”

The North Vancouver Wolf Pack pulled within a point of Delta with a 2-1 victory on Tuesday night in Ladner. The third place Richmond Sockeyes sit six points back but enjoy a whopping five games in hand.

Daniel Tait’s second period power play goal provided the difference as North Van enjoyed 10 man advantage opportunities on the night compared to just three for the Ice Hawks. The locals spent half of the second period alone killing off penalties.
