The Southlands application took another step forward this week. After receiving conditional approval from Delta’s civic politicians last fall, it will now be up to Metro Vancouver’s board of directors to say whether the controversial development application gets the go ahead. Delta council approved an application package Monday night and municipal staff sent a request to amend the region’s growth strategy on Wednesday. Century Group is proposing to build 950 housing units on 20 per cent of the 214-hectare (537-acre) Tsawwassen property in an area that reportedly has the poorest soil quality. The remaining 80 per cent would be given to Delta, much of it for farming. The proponent would

Metro Vancouver received a mountain of documents, including minutes from a five-day public hearing last fall, along with the Southlands development application. also pay millions to upgrade drainage and irrigation for soil-based farming. Delta council gave the application third reading in November following a five-day public hearing that heard from hundreds of residents, both opposed to and in favour of the proposal. The package forwarded to Metro includes com-

ment sheets from public information meetings held by Century and the municipality as well as correspondence submitted to the mayor and council, including petitions and form letters, staff reports to council, and minutes from council meetings and the public hearing. The Southlands is zoned

agricultural and also designated that way in the Metro Vancouver growth strategy. Any change in regional designation would require a two-thirds weighted vote by the board of directors. The timeline for the Metro application is not yet known but municipal staff will provide updates to council and on Delta’s

website as the application moves through the process. Century Group president Sean Hodgins said last year one of the likely issues is whether it’s Metro’s place to rigidly enforce the growth strategy when a member municipality seeks a change. “That will be a key issue, I think,” he said at the time. “To what degree is the RGS (Regional Growth Strategy) a locked-in-stone issue or is this a guideline which will allow government to adjust? I do think it’s going to be a difficult test to get through.” The Metro Vancouver board has gone both ways on amending the growth strategy in recent years. It has approved proposals, including the Jackson Farm in Maple Ridge and Tsawwassen Springs, but last fall shot down a couple of applications by Langley Township for land in the ALR.

Expensive updates for coal terminal Westshore to spend about $230 million over the next five years to upgrade its aging equipment and buildings BY

SANDOR GYARMATI

sgyarmati@delta-optimist.com

North America’s busiest coal export facility at Roberts Bank is about to undergo a major upgrade. Originally opened on a much smaller footprint in 1970, Westshore Terminals will spend about $230 million over the next five years for a large-scale equipment upgrade as well as replacement of older buildings with a centralized office and equipment complex. Westshore has already begun replacing equipment, including spending over $14 million on new dust suppression and water recycling measures, over the past couple of years. “We’ve been in business for 44 years and some of our equipment has become quite old, in need of major refurbishment. It’s not about expansion but staying efficient and in business,” said vice-president and general manager Denis Horgan. The upgrades include new stacker-reclaimer machines that move coal into stockpiles as well as load it onto ships. The elec-

may be having on their health and the environment. Because industrial operations are subject to stringent regulations, which require monitoring of emissions, the report notes, it’s not unreasonable to hold the transportation industry to the same standards and expect the impacts from the transportation of coal on local communities and the environment are monitored and understood. Council agreed to request funding from Westshore and Metro Vancouver for Delta to undertake an independent one-year study of dust emissions from coal cars, including continuous dust monitoring at locations along the railway corridor. Westshore has already committed to contribute. Horgan said Westshore, meantime, has additional dust emission measures planned this year, including four more high tower sprays along the southern edge of the site, spraying empty railcars with dust binding coatings as well as a system to apply dust suppression coatings on coal being loaded onto ships.

Fred Moore to be inducted into Aviation Hall of Fame Tsawwassen man has spent a lifetime in the sky BY

DAVE WILLIS

dwillis@delta-optimist.com

Canada’s Aviation Hall of Fame recently announced Tsawwassen’s Fred Moore would be one of its new inductees at a gala dinner and ceremony in Calgary later this year. Inductees are selected for their “contributions to Canada’s development through their integral roles in the nation’s aviation history.” When asked for his reaction Moore, 85, said he was grateful. He noted a good friend had nominated him a few years ago and just kept persisting. Moore said he has done “just about everything in aviation.” He “spent a lifetime in fixed and rotary wing avia-

tion in both the military and civilian fields,” notes a news release from the hall of fame. He started out his 16year career in the Royal Canadian Air Force with Central Experimental and Proving Establishment, a test flying group. “As a young officer he was given significant levels of authority to improve acceptance standards for military aircraft ordered for the Royal Canadian Air Force and subsequently to manage the early efforts to develop simulators for increasingly complex weapons systems,” the news release states. Outside of the air force Moore rose to high-level positions with Northwest Industries in Edmonton and then Okanagan Helicopters.

Moore also served in organizations like the Air Transport Association of Canada (vice-chairman) and Helicopter Association International (chairman). Other inductees include WestJet airlines founder Clive J. Beddoe, Lorna De Blicquy, a flight instructor and advocate for women in aviation, and Robert P. Engle, founder of Canada’s Northwest Territorial Airlines. “The CAHF is proud to honour these four welldeserving individuals for their significant contributions to Canadian aviation, and to Canada’s development as a nation,” said Tom Appleton, chair of the Canada Aviation Hall of Fame board of directors. The inductions will take place on May 29.

More than two months after it was damaged, repairs to the Highway 10 overpass should be complete this weekend. Traffic on the overpass has been reduced to a single alternating lane since Oct. 29 when a truck carrying an over height steel tank southbound on Highway 99 slammed into the structure. According to the Ministry of Transportation, the overpass suffered damage to the outside girders in the crash, which snarled rush hour traffic for hours as commuters had to reroute around the overpass

TED MURPHY

MURPHY’S LAW In the end, I guess a little of Scott Hamilton’s time is better than none at all. We’ve reached the juncture where the veteran civic politician, who was elected Liberal MLA for Delta North last spring, was to part ways with his longtime municipal colleagues, yet it doesn’t appear he’s going anywhere. Hamilton took a leave of absence from his Delta council duties, rather than formally resigning, shortly after winning the seat last May in order not to trigger a costly municipal by-election. The thinking was that he’d be on leave through the remainder of 2013 and then officially resign this month when a by-election would no longer be required because of the proximity of this fall’s general election. Although he was on unpaid leave through the latter half of last year, he still kept his hand in civic affairs, which it appears is something he will continue to do until November. I was of the mind that he should have resigned last year and been replaced by a councillor that could devote all of his or her energies to the job. Yes, it would have been the more costly route and wouldn’t have really changed the balance of power, but no one said democracy was cheap. Opting not to hold a by-election and running a body short most of the time certainly saved taxpayers some cash, so it’s hard to argue with the decision, although I’ll be sure to hold it over council members the next time they rationalize a salary increase due to an additional workload because there’s only seven of them (not nine or more like on other Greater Vancouver councils). Now that we’re at the point where a by-election is moot, it makes sense for Hamilton to continue doing what he’s been doing, which is attending meetings and tending to civic business when his provincial schedule permits. It stands to reason it’s better to have a part-time councillor than none at all, although you could question whether that arrangement shortchanges the good folks of Delta North that he represents in the legislature. Hamilton has been a capable, hardworking councillor for more than a decade, so he’s not the type to let such responsibilities slide. I think the fact he even wants to continue in this dual role says something about him given he’s not getting paid at municipal hall and his plate is full with another gig. No one would blink if he simply cut ties with council at this point, but he wants to help out where he can. And you never know when that will come in handy.

Nothing says vacation like a visit to Prairies in November IAN ROBERTSON

COMMUNITY COMMENT Last fall while on a sabbatical from this column, my wife and I took our daughter and her two children on the Prairies section of our grandchildren’s North American odyssey. Although Canadian, they have lived in Southeast Asia for a decade, so this was their first journey east of Salmon Arm. Many friends wondered about us trying to be tourists on the Prairies in November. My response that we “were avoiding mosquitoes” didn’t result in many laughs. We rented a van in Winnipeg and drove it to our starting point — Calgary. The logic of that is buried in horrendous drop-off charges. Sure enough, our start was delayed one day by a snowstorm in Calgary that blocked highways to the east. We got away and, avoiding drifting snow, reached Saskatoon and rela-

tives the first day. The -10C was a challenge. In Saskatoon we visited one of four Economic Development Museums on the Prairies, all excellent examples of early life. Since my wife’s ancestors had immigrated and homesteaded on the Prairies, introducing the kids to “Bennett buggies” and to the effects of drought was educational. Then on to Moose Jaw and the tunnels where we learned about the abysmal life of immigrant Chinese after the railway was completed. The next stop was the family farm, which was home to the family from the ‘20s until just a few years ago. The house, barn, chicken coop and equipment shed still stand and are in use by the next generation of farmers. The linoleum on the floor in the house is yet to be ripped out and replaced so patterns of the ‘30s, ‘40s and ‘50s could be seen. The original banister is still in use, and light switches which originally serviced the 32-volt battery system from the basement still work! Unlike here on the coast, the wooden fence has withstood winds and snow for a century. We then visited the new genera-

tion of farmers who acquired the land and saw today’s technology at work. The evolution from a single horse-drawn plow to today’s machinery is absolutely breathtaking. My grandson climbed a ladder to get into the air-conditioned cab of a new track driven tractor. He was about 10 feet above me. That evening we stayed at a nearby B&B that operates in an “Eaton’s Catalogue house” that has been lovingly preserved and restored. A home cooked dinner had the kids full of questions about pioneer experiences and the nickknacks around the house. Our journey continued eastward, past my wife’s childhood village, on to Brandon and then to Winnipeg. No snow — it was too cold — a remembrance from my childhood on the Prairies. We left our daughter and grandchildren to visit and then go onto to Eastern Canada and back through the U.S. They made it before the weather chaos that has gripped large portions of our countries in recent weeks. I wonder what they will report in their diaries that are part of their travel school assignment.

Editor: Delta council voted unanimously Jan. 6 to provide taxpayer funding for the Fraser Basin Council to prepare a Flood Management Business Plan. There is full support from other Metro municipalities for this project, which is supposed to take two years. In its letter to the Corporation of Delta requesting support, the Fraser Basin Council indicated that among the many factors to be considered

will be the expected sea level rise by 2100, and stated the cost of protection could reach $9.5 billion. Coun. Sylvia Bishop asked engineering director Stephen Lan if Delta’s flood management criteria included provision for the 2100 sea level rise, or just for the rise by 2050. Lan found it difficult to give a clear answer to this question, merely stating they were working towards a policy. There is urgent need for all levels of government to

adopt a clear and unambiguous policy with regard to construction and protection from what is universally acknowledged by the U.N to be a sea level rise of one metre by 2100. It is ironic that on the council agenda for Jan. 13 was a report containing the details of the request by Delta to allow construction of a development for 950 homes on the floodplain. The level of fill proposed will not protect these homes from the expected sea level

rise by 2100. In 2011 the province employed engineering consultants to prepare guidelines that would require this level of protection. Adoption of these guidelines has been delayed for reasons that are not known. Meanwhile, unwise and potentially unsafe development can proceed on the floodplain in Delta. Future residents and their insurers will do well to take heed of this situation. Peter Duffey

Climate changing despite short-term events Editor: Re: Re-examining sea level rise could reduce dump truck trips through Tsawwassen, letter to the editor, Jan. 10 Ed Ries used several myths about global warming to argue that it might not be necessary to adopt a more conservative flood protection level for the Southlands development.

One cannot use a shortterm snapshot of local weather to identify longterm climate change. Thus, the fact it has recently been exceptionally cold in parts of North America says nothing about whether Earth is cooling or warming. That determination needs an examination of climate trends over several decades, and the change on average shows

the whole globe is definitely warming. The extent and volume of sea ice changes naturally, but there is also a clear trend in the decrease of both ice volume and extent in the Arctic over the last 20 years, coupled with a marked rise in air temperature over the same period. The trapped icebreakers in Antarctica were stranded by exceptionally thick ice

There are only a couple of days left to see exciting exhibit at Gallery 1710 Editor: May I urge your readers to give themselves an hour or two of mental excitement by viewing, and comprehending, the outstanding art presented by students of South Delta Secondary and the South Delta Artists Guild in the current show. A Cappella encourages the students to give written voice to their inner thoughts and concerns. Each poem or essay has been interpreted by a student-artist, with some guild members participating, and the entire show is exciting and thought-provoking. Here you will see what matters now for young people, and how brightly some of their stars will shine in

the future. The courage and enthusiasm displayed is a wonderful tribute to the South Delta teachers who taught these students how to write and make art to express themselves so well. Make time to see A Cappella at Gallery 1710 adjacent to the South Delta Recreation Centre. Take time to read the poems, look at the art, and think about what you have

Sisters spend holiday in bat caves Meredith girls volunteer with unique Cuban conservation project through Animal Experience International

Sisters Rowan, Darsey and Cailean Meredith spent an atypical holiday in Varadero, Cuba last month. Rather than sunning themselves at one of the many all-inclusive resorts, the Merediths spent a week in and around the many caves assisting Canadian biologist Melissa Donelly and her Cuban colleagues in an ongoing bat conservation study. It was youngest sister Cailean who initiated the girls’ interest in the project. As a Grade 12 student at South Delta Secondary who will be studying biodiversity at Drexel University in September, she was looking for a way to gain hands-on experience in animal conservation as a part of her high school curriculum. She was fortunate to gain

the support of local teacher Monica Burnett and UBC professor Alice Cassidy in putting together an independent directed study as one of her Grade 12 classes. Both course sponsors encouraged Cailean to develop a plan that included a strong experiential learning component, so she researched a variety of volunteer conservation projects. The Cuban bat project — Programa para la Conservacion de los Murcielagos — has just started recruiting volunteers through the Canadian organization Animal Experience International (AEI). AEI works with community-based groups to match volunteers to projects that help animals. Of the many projects AEI supports, the Cuban one most interested

Gracie was found as a stray and brought down to the shelter. We were never able to locate her previous family as she had no identification and no one came looking for her. Gracie is a very sweet and affectionate gal and is quite easy going. Gracie would thrive in almost any home. She is tolerant (though a little frightened) of dogs and is OK with gentle and easy going cats.

chance to work with bats, and to see how incredibly tiny and delicate they are, it seems incredible that so many people react so negatively,” said Cailean. “They are amazingly useful. The bats we worked with were all fruit eaters, and are very important in pollinating bananas and other food crops. And they’re cute!” There are 28 species of bats in Cuba. The team found five of these species, all located within and around the small ecological preserve of Varahicacos where three of the caves are regularly visited by ecotourists.

As a reward for their hard work in the caves, the Merediths experienced two additional excursions that tourists to Cuba rarely enjoy: a tour through a portion of the enormous Cuevas de Bellamar cave complex and the connected community garden project, and a day trip led by a Cuban ornithologist to observe a wide array of birds, including the world’s smallest bird. AEI is recruiting volunteers for a June trip to the same area to continue the work. More information on this and other projects is available at www.animalexperienceinternational.com.

The Merediths learned to set up mist nets, to handnet, and how to carefully handle and examine the bats, including tagging and taking measurements. Donnelly notes, “The most exciting part of the whole trip was finding a single Macrotus waterhousii in a cave bordering on the construction site of an intended marina,” according to Darsey. “The Macrotus waterhousii is an endangered species, and we hope that evidence we located of its use of that cave might help conservationists’ efforts to protect additional habitat to ensure its survival.”

In interviewing each of the sisters before placement, AEI co-ordinator Heather Reid remarked how exciting it was to have three siblings who all loved the idea of helping bats. Name: Laurie Occupation: Delta Parks, Recreation & Culture employee – soon to be retired! What was the activity? The 34th Annual Polar Bear Swim Where and when did this take place? Centennial Beach at Boundary Bay Regional Park on January 1st.

A child may be registered to attend Kindergarten in September 2014 if his or her fifth birthday occurs on or before December 31, 2014.

How often do you participate? I come to the Polar Bear swim every year.

At the time of registration, the following original documents must be provided: 1. Proof of birth date for the student (birth certificate or passport) (registration will not be accepted until proof of birth date is received) 2. Proof of citizenship for both the parent and the student (Canadian birth certificate, citizenship card, passport, landed immigrant document, permanent resident card) 3. Immunization record, Care Card, medical and emergency contact information 4. Proof of Residency showing address (Property Taxes - current receipt, purchase/rental agreement or rental receipt)

How long have you been involved? I’ve worked for Parks, Recreation & Culture for 38 years, and attended this event at least 30 times! Why did you get involved in this activity? One of the best parts of my job is when I get to watch the members of the community enjoy themselves at a special event. What do you like best about this activity? It’s a wonderful family activity, a great way to get people outside on a cold winter day, and I love seeing the expression on the swimmers faces when they run into the water!

Parents should be aware that students may be required to attend a school outside of their usual attendance area if class enrolments exceed 22. Application forms for French Immersion are completed separately and are available at all elementary schools. Completed application forms for entry into Early French Immersion should be delivered only to the French Immersion school in your attendance area on or before 4:00 pm, Friday, February 7, 2014. Successful applicants will be notified by the school the week following the application deadline, and will be advised of the registration procedures. For more information on French Immersion Parent Information Meeting nights, please visit our website at http://web.deltasd.bc.ca/programs/frimm, or contact Christine Carriou at ccarriou@deltasd.bc.ca or 604-952-5066.

How does it benefit your life? It inspires me when I see the swimmers come back year after year to participate in this event. What other things do you do to keep active? I am very involved with the annual Tour de Delta cycle event, and enjoy activities with my family.

Applications are now being accepted for the Traditional Elementary Schools and are to be completed separately. Forms are available at Heath, Jarvis and Pebble Hill Traditional Elementary Schools or on the district website at http://web.deltasd.bc.ca/. Completed application forms should be delivered only to those schools on or before 4:00 pm, Friday, February 7, 2014.

Did you know that families that play together stay together? The Polar Bear Swim is just one of the many allages events held each year in Delta. This year the oldest swimmer was Lui Porc (73) and the swimmer from farthest away was from Australia. It was a wonderful family outing and a great way to kick off 2014.

NON-CATCHMENT AND NON-DISTRICT APPLICATIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED AT DISTRICT SCHOOLS COMMENCING FEBRUARY 3, 2014 AND WILL RECEIVE PRIORITY IN THE RESPECTIVE CATEGORY IF RECEIVED PRIOR TO MARCH 7, 2014.

Lighten your load The excitement at Ladner United of a new church building and phase of ministry is at times accompanied by a sense of weariness and burnout for some of us in the long haul of this journey. I surprised myself this week. It was hard at first to say it. As excited as I am and proud of what we have done together, I am feeling “spiritually and mentally out of breath.” Yet after I said it a few times, I felt relived and lighter. We live in a world where projecting an “I have it all together” image is highly valued. That image can easily become a prison where we hide our real selves, our fears, failures, disappointments and hurts. “How are you?” we are asked.

“I’m fine,” we reply without missing a beat. I suppose it is because we are afraid — if I really show you who I am, you may not love me and that “me” is all I have. How difficult it can be to say those words, “I am not really OK. I need some help.” May we reflect as Christians the promise of Jesus: “Come unto me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is ready and my burden is light.” Jim Short can be reached at minister@ladnerunited.org.

Pursuant to Section 890(4) of the Local Government Act and Council’s resolution on December 16, 2013, there will not be a Public Hearing for this bylaw.

For the first time, Delta author Laura Michelle Thomas is hosting a freeto-enter international poetry competition for aspiring young writers. This past August, Thomas added the poetry contest to her current offerings, which include the International Junior Authors Short Story Contest that opens for its seventh season in February. The poetry contest closes at midnight on Jan. 31, and Thomas is seeking a handful of qualified judges to help her choose the winners. So far, according to Thomas, more than 700 poems have been submitted from over 30 countries from young writers in four age categories, ranging from nine to 21 years old. “I’m blown away by the

response,” said Thomas. “The most surprising thing is that on the entry form more than 80 per cent of the entrants state that they heard about the contest by doing a Google search, from a teacher, or friend.” Thomas originally believed it would be the 1,800-plus writers in her 2013 short story contest who would make up the majority of contestants in her poetry contest. “With so many young writers finding out about us through the poetry contest for the first time, we could see thousands of entries for this year’s short story contest,” she said. “At 1,000 words per short story, it’s a bit daunting when you think about how much reading and judging that will entail.”

Thomas said judging the poems for the poetry contest should be much less arduous for the volunteers she is currently seeking. She has limited the length of the poems to 50 lines, and has created a detailed judging key, which makes it easier to assign scores. To keep the amount of work reasonable for her volunteers, she will do a preliminary round of judging before distributing the strongest poems in each category to her team. Judging will take place in March. Qualified individuals who would like to join the Junior Authors Poetry Contest judging team may apply by contacting Thomas prior to March 1. For more about the poetry contest, visit www.laurathomascommunications.com.

Weaving stories out of string

Entertainer Anne Glover uses string manipulation to illustrate her storytelling.

Entertainer Anne Glover is bringing her storytelling show to Ladner next weekend. Using string is a big part of her family show. “They’re woven into the stories or sometimes they are the centerpiece of what I’m doing,” says Glover. Audience members can expect to have fun, be laughing and “to be inspired by how much one can do with a really simple loop of string.” Glover explains that what she works with is a game of string manipulation known as Cat’s Cradle in this neck of the woods. But, she says, she’s also learned to make shapes from all different parts of the world. She says stories can be illustrated with a dog that moves across one hand from another, or a turtle, fish, snake or all kinds of things. She also uses French in her show with some sign language woven in as well.

Glover “has appeared at countless schools, festivals, and conferences across the continent, and has performed her original stories on CBC radio, in both English and French,” her website states. Glover, who has been performing for over 20 years, also recently started teaching part time as a substitute in Victoria. She is scheduled to perform Saturday, Jan. 25 at 3 p.m. at Genesis Theatre, 5005-45th Ave., Ladner. Tickets are $3 per person and are available at all French immersion schools (Ladner Elementary, Cliff Drive Elementary and South Park Elementary in South Delta). Tickets are also available by calling 604-952-5058 or by emailing costerreicher@deltasd.bc.ca. Glover is also performing at Richardson Elementary, 11339-83rd Ave. in North Delta, on Sunday, Jan. 19 at 3 p.m. The Delta school district and Canadian Parents for French are sponsoring the shows.

Portal offering acting workshops BY

DAVE WILLIS

dwillis@delta-optimist.com

A weekly acting workshop starts next week at The Portal in Ladner. There will be classes on Thursdays for kids, youth and adults, says Claire Pollock. “It’s just a good way for people to take time for themselves and have fun [on] a Thursday,” she says. “Acting is a really great way to teach you about yourself and to play and have fun.”

Pollock directed The Portal’s first-ever theatrical performance last October. This will be her second time putting on a workshop there. Participants will learn how to warm up their voices and bodies for acting, different acting techniques and will play some games and have fun, she says. They’ll get scripts to perform dialogues and monologues at the last class for a chance to show what they’ve learned. The classes would be good for beginners

or people who have done some acting and want to get back into it, she notes. The classes will run every Thursday from Jan. 23 to Feb. 27 at The Portal, 4755-51st St., Ladner. Times are 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. for children, 5:30 to 7 p.m. for youth and 7 to 9 p.m. for adults. Costs are $90 for adults (or $75 for The Portal members) and $75 for children/ youth (or $60 for members). To register email clairemariepollock@ gmail.com.

Local church hosting tiny dancers Youngsters from Place of Rescue in Cambodia will perform at Tsawwassen Alliance The Tsawwassen Alliance Church will host a performance by 10 little dancers from the Place of Rescue AIDS Centre and Orphanage in Cambodia later this month. The youngsters, ages eight to 10, will perform CELEBRATE on Thursday, Jan. 23 at 7 p.m. Place of Rescue was founded as a Cambodian NGO in 2003 by retired Canadian missionary Marie Ens. At that time, it consisted of 15 houses for families dealing with AIDS. Ten years later, Place of Rescue now has three campuses and is home to 426 children, 23 destitute grannies and 27 AIDS families. It also has three university dorms housing 40 of the now-young adults. Of the children coming to Canada, two are from the AIDS Centre where they live with their HIV positive mothers, one is an abandoned child and seven are orphans. Some have been at

Place of Rescue since they were babies; all have come from tragic circumstances. At Place of Rescue they have a kind and loving “house mom” and new siblings (nine other children living together in a house). Their lives have changed dramatically and they now have every opportunity for a good future. “Your heart is never really the same after an encounter with Marie and kids from Place of Rescue,” says Rhoda Brooks, staff member at Tsawwassen Alliance Church. “We are very excited about having the children come to share their dances and stories with us. Place of Rescue is an amazing place and we look forward to celebrating with them.” The performance is open to everyone. There is no admission fee, although donations are gratefully accepted. The church is at 495112th Ave.

Badlands offer surreal views Arizona is home to the largest meteor crater on Earth

BY

MARGARET DEEFHOLTS Optimist contributor

I am in northern Arizona’s badlands — a surreal landscape in a world that existed before man learned to measure time by the seasons and the constellations wheeling above him. As I stand on the rim of a gigantic circular hollow gouged into the barren earth, a desert wind ruffles my hair and whispers secrets of an event that happened 50,000 years ago to create what lies far, far below my viewing platform: the largest meteor crater on Earth. It is nearly a mile across, 550 feet deep and large enough at its base to encompass 20 football fields while two million spectators would fit comfortably along its sloping walls. The crater was formed by what came to be known as the Canyon Diabolo meteorite. The power and speed of the meteor’s impact slammed into the earth at 40,000 miles an hour (which would be like travelling from New York to Los Angeles in four minutes) and caused an explosion equivalent to a force greater than 20 million tons of TNT. The shock would have registered on every

seismograph across the globe. The wind dies away and I lean over the rails to peer at the crater, its surface pocked like a moonscape, and I’m not surprised to learn this site was used by NASA as a training ground for Apollo’s astronauts (including Neil Armstrong) back in the 1960s. A special section at the on-site museum has been dedicated to these heroes who dared, as John Gillespie Magee puts it, to “slip the surly bonds of earth” and soar into space. Hollywood’s imagination too has been fired by the Arizona crater: the 1979 movie Meteor starring Sean Connery and Natalie Wood was filmed here and Star Man with Jeff Bridges and Karen Allen told the story of an alien who was picked up from the floor of the crater by a spaceship. The sheer unpredictability of a cosmic event of this magnitude raises the point as to whether this could happen again, and if so, are there any early warning systems in place? I find the answers to this and several other questions at the adjoining Meteor Crater Learning Centre. While we aren’t immune to the possibility of another

and white rocky outcrops that stretch, fold upon fold, to the far horizon. Erosion has sculpted portions of the granite into twisted shapes: here a raised fist clenched against the sky, there a staircase of gray blocks piled one over the other in defiance of gravity or, in the distance, the silhouette of some fabled castle perched on top of a mesa. The Chinle Formation area in the adjoining Petrified Forest National Park has its own treasures also dating from the same period. I crouch down to peer closely at a petrified five-inch cross-section of wood compressed into marble-smooth whorls of royal purple and fire engine red. Not far away lies another chunk that looks like a miniature modernist painting with splashes of bright yellow, veined by a network of thin blue capillaries. leisure&lifestyles gardening

Get out into the garden for a little exercise anne marrison

Green Room Most of us plan to exercise more in the New Year and luckily, for gardeners, great opportunities for stretching, flexibility and balancing are waiting right outside. Just walking around the garden in cold snaps can turn exercising into a learning experience revealing warmer microclimates, places where frost lingers longest and where snowdrifts pile up. This is a huge help in figuring out where

dubiously hardy plants are best placed and where frostheaved plants need re-settling when the soil is soft again. But when weeks of frost replace rain, plants and containers under roof overhangs can die from drought. Unfortunately, watering them means extra work when hoses have been drained and outside taps turned off to ensure house pipes don’t freeze. People in rural areas where power outages mean their wells don’t function may find it safest to fill all their watering cans with water and keep them in the house as a backup supply for precious plants. Meanwhile, pruning

of many trees, late-summer/fall flowering shrubs and roses is best done just before growth resumes and should cease once the buds swell. For busy people, this can be a recipe for postponing pruning until it’s too late. Generally pruning can be done through January and into mid-February. Within these few weeks, the best time to prune is when you have time. Gardeners expecting to be away at the optimum pruning times sometimes prune in December. But shrubs and vines that flower in spring and early summer shouldn’t be pruned at this time because it removes stems that are preparing to flower. Pruning right after flowering is their best time. By late January, cutting back small flowerbed shrubs when the ground has softened can be a no-fuss opportunity for propagating extra plants. Just take the best of your prunings, thrust them into the soil near the mother plant and forget them for a few months. This has worked for me with lav-

ender, caryopteris, santolina, currents and artemesias. People in gardens where wild growth constantly infiltrates will find these winter months ideal timing for fighting Himalayan blackberries. It’s vital to dig up the rootball because these vines grow 50 feet in one summer and every tip that touches the ground spawns a thick mass of white roots for a new plant. Where time permits, one of the quickest ways of improving the look of the garden is to redo garden bed edges. Trenched edges tend to slump and fill in periodically. Recutting them into sharp crispness draws the eye to the shape of the bed rather than any unremoved weeds. Later, dark winter evenings are a good time to sit down with seed catalogues or scan online, dream a little of next year’s garden and order before popular seeds are gone. Anne Marrison is happy to answer garden questions. Send them to amarrison@ shaw.ca. It helps me finetune the answer if you add the your city or region.

Greater challenges await Pacers Senior boys basketball team cruises past South Delta in rivalry game with own tournament up next BY

MARK BOOTH

mbooth@delta-optimist.com

If their upcoming challenges could only be as easy as it was for the Delta Pacers on Wednesday night. The senior boys basketball team cruised to its third consecutive Stebbings/Murray Cup with an 80-28 victory over the South Delta Sun Devils in the annual rivalry game played in front of a packed gym in Ladner. The outcome was predictable between two programs with entirely different outlooks on the season. While the Pacers are hoping to take a serious run at just their third provincial tournament berth in 21 years, the Sun Devils are trying to re-establish themselves at a school where football is king and not many student-athletes are interested in playing more than one sport. South Delta did manage the game’s opening basket but it was the visitors’ only lead of the night as the Pacers promptly took control with their up-tempo transition game and dominance in the paint, led by 6-foot-7 provincial team player Ryan Cowley. They opened up a 24-8 lead after one quarter and never looked back. “All you can ask is to go out and play as hard as you can and give your best effort. We did that tonight,” said Pacers head coach Tim Whitehead. Delta was coming off an encouraging third place finish at the 47th

annual Chancellor Tournament at St. Thomas More where its only loss was by a 75-73 margin to eventual champion Handworth. The task will be even greater next week when the Pacers host the 12-team Bill Kushnir Memorial Tournament. They must beat NorKam on Wednesday (8:15 p.m.) to earn a chance to play No. 4 Churchill on Thursday (8:15 p.m.) which received an opening round bye along with three other schools — No. 2 Tamanawis, No. 7 Claremont and Kitsilano. So much for a soft touch draw for the home team. “We welcome the challenge,” continued Whitehead. “We want to play the best teams. We are not shying down from the challenge and you’re only going to get better playing teams that are better than you. It has worked so far.” The Pacers have seen a steady diet of provincially ranked opponents along with five American opponents, as they prepare for what promises to be an extremely competitive post-season. Currently, seven of the top 10 ranked 4A teams in the province are from the Fraser Valley, while another three are honourable mention. Just how many berths the Valley zone will receive for the 16-team provincial tournament will be determined at an upcoming meeting but it’s safe to say the Pacers will likely need a couple of upset wins to take their season to the Langley Events Centre come March.

have to stick with what you are good at and what you know. We’re looking to build on our success and keep progressing forward.”

Perfect run earns U12 Celtic tourney triumph in Seattle Ladner U12 Celtic rep boys soccer team made the most of its trip south of the border last weekend, capturing its division at the Northwest Winter Soccer Classic in Seattle. The event is the largest tournament in the Greater Seattle area and attracted teams from Washington, Oregon, Idaho and B.C. The Ladner boys rolled to five straight wins en route to the title. Each game saw them trailing at some point, yet managing to battle back each time — finishing with 16 goals for and eight against. Coaches Jack Torok and Doug Wilkinson

commented: “The boys fought tirelessly in each and every game and came away with the victory. It speaks volumes of their mental toughness, to not even consider a loss.” This the Celtic’s second tournament triumph in as many years. The team now turns its attention to trying to win its group in District 5 League Cup playdowns. The roster features: Evan Paterson, Braedy Euerby, Samuel Wilkinson, Kian Mackie, Aman Hundal, Dawson Baker, Jack Chadd, Quinn Torok, Ben Kraemer, Zac Sherwin, Ravail Nijjar, Otto Willborn, Josh Bermel, Jonah Jackson and Carter Torok.
