Big price to court ruling
School district would require $3.4 million to hire teachers to meet class size limits BY
SANDOR GYARMATI
sgyarmati@delta-optimist.com
The Delta school district faces tremendous uncertainty as a result of the recent court ruling in favour of teachers. Last month, a B.C. Supreme Court judge ruled that provincial legislation introduced in 2002 that removed class size and composition from contract negotiations was unconstitutional. That ruling
is a significant blow to the province as it was ordered to immediately restore limits to 2002 levels. Victoria is now asking the court to temporarily suspend parts of the ruling in favour of the B.C. Teachers’ Federation until an appeal is heard, citing “financial harm in the additional costs imposed on British Columbia’s 60 school districts.” See RULING page 3

The Delta Sport Council held a send-off Tuesday evening in Ladner for athletes, coaches and officials attending the B.C. Winter Games this week in Mission. Here, members of Delta Gymnastics cut the cake.
The Ladner Leisure Centre had to be evacuated yesterday morning after a large portion of the building’s façade fell to the ground. At about 10:30 a.m., a significant part of the stucco façade came away from the wall on the east side of the building, said chief administrative officer George Harvie.
The fire department stood by and engineers were called in to assess the damage. While still early in the investigation, Harvie said it appears that stresses over the years caused the fasteners holding the façade to fail. The debris fell straight down and not into the parking lot at the back of the leisure centre. As of Optimist deadline, it was unclear how long the centre would be closed.

The first phase of the huge Boundary Bay Industrial Park complex in East Ladner was turned into a hockey rink Wednesday. A celebration at the almost complete logistics centre near Boundary Bay Airport included a ball hockey tournament and a visit by Mayor Lois Jackson. Jackson called it an exciting project that would bring big additional tax revenue for Delta and create over 1,000 jobs. She said it’s an ideal location due to the new 80th Street overpass next door, in addition to South Fraser Perimeter Road and proximity to the port at Roberts Bank. “It really, in my opinion, is in the right place at the right time. The climate is right. I think people will be really happy with the outcome,” Jackson said. Paul Tilbury, COO of the Dayhu Group, the firm behind the project, said the first phase, which already has its first tenant signed, comprises about 440,000 square feet. Construction on the second phase, which will have the same amount of space, is set to begin this summer. Noting the facility will

deciding what they need in terms of space and reviewing the opportunity we present here,” said Tilbury. “There is demand for more industrial space and for that you need more land. For a facility like this, you need contiguous land. The problem in the Lower Mainland is there’s not many sites that are strategi-
cally located that provide contiguous acreage to be able to build to scale.” He said it’s the next generation of distribution centre with greater than average ceiling heights, providing significantly more storage volume for largescale users. Three years ago, Alpha Aviation, the company with

province. Noting chairperson Laura Dixon and superintendent Dianne Turner can’t comment at this time, a spokesperson told the Optimist the district has been required to submit a report to the Ministry of Education outlining the potential impact of the court ruling. However, the information in that report is only preliminary because there are too many variables to determine concrete impacts.
Questioning how students could possibly be harmed by smaller classes and more resources, Delta Teachers’ Association president Paul Steer said the government is now resorting to scare tactics. Steer, who sent a letter to the school board stating he expects class size provisions to be adjusted without delay, is awaiting a response. “We’re not being at all unreasonable. The ruling
is the ruling and we know what the contract says. Our advice to government is to comply with this and let’s move on and start restoring that which was unjustly taken away.” Delta South MLA Vicki Huntington said she’s concerned about the ripple effect for Delta if the province, which is already chronically underfunding districts, refuses to provide the money to pay for the classroom adjustments.

Harbour Link puts trucks to the test Delta police officers spend three days at Tilbury business to ensure big rigs are in proper working condition BY
JESSICA KERR
jkerr@delta-optimist.com
One local company is taking a proactive approach when it comes to truck safety. Harbour Link Container Services Inc. invited Delta police’s commercial vehicle inspection unit to have a look at its trucks this week. The officers spent three days at the Tilbury-based company, which operates as an independent provider of intermodal container transport and off-dock container terminal services. It currently has 115 trucks — 30 owned by the company and the rest by owner/operators — almost 90 drivers and operates around the clock seven days a week. Harbour Link serves many in the industry, including shipping lines, big box retailers, importers and exporters from a 4.4hectare (11-acre) Hopcott Road site that is a maze of shipping containers. Last year Harbour Link hauled just over 80,000 containers locally. The company initially

we’re seeing a really good improvement,” said Special Const. Sean Kelly. One of only two in the Lower Mainland, the com-
mercial vehicle inspection unit is out on Delta roads on a daily basis to inspect trucks travelling through the community. The depart-
ment joins with several other agencies for an annual inspection blitz, which targets trucks officers suspect might pose a safety risk.
As well, officers often visit with trucking companies to inspect trucks or educate drivers on safety. Kelly said visiting companies like Harbour Link allows officers to reach out to more drivers at once. “It’s really nice to see how Harbour Link is really proactive on safety,” he said. While officers look at all aspects of the truck, from the mechanical to ensuring the driver has the proper class of licence, Kelly said the two most common safety issues the unit sees are brakes not working properly and cargo that is not adequately secured.

Civic stats show vandalism in parks on the decline BY

While vandalism at local parks and public facilities will never be completely eliminated, Delta is seeing some success in its attempts to curb vandals. The municipality saw about 100 fewer incidents in 2013 than in 2012, and the total cost to repair acts of vandalism was $64,891, almost $20,000 less than the previous year. That total has fluctu-

Last year saw a total of 274 acts of vandalism, including fires at the Holly Park synthetic turf field and the North Delta Community Park field house, which cost a combined $17,000 to repair. A municipal staff report notes there were 98 incidents of graffiti, which is down significantly over last year, 86 incidents of broken glass and 26 incidents of WHY SWIM CLO? • Unique Learn-to-Swim Program that works • Professional Coaches • Private Learning Environment • Watch our videos at www.swimclo.com

damage to park furniture. Other acts of vandalism last year included damaged washrooms (26), illegal dumping (22), damage to fencing/lighting (eight), damage to playgrounds/ water parks (three), damaged synthetic turf fields (three) and wire theft (two). “We’re very proactive in any number of ways in dealing with this,” said Coun. Robert Campbell, who is also chair of the parks, recreation and culture commission.
The report notes that kiosk wrapping in parks is proving effective in deterring graffiti, while washroom security locking systems, the presence of park attendants and the annual summer Park Patrol program are also helping reduce the incidents of vandalism. Every summer, the municipality partners with Delta police to hire students to patrol approximately 30 parks in South Delta and 20 in North Delta.

TED MURPHY
MURPHY’S LAW There’s no way they can pass the buck on this one. The B.C. Supreme Court ruling last month that requires class size limits, among other classroom issues, to be restored to 2002 levels has to be considered a step forward for education but also comes with a hefty price tag, one the provincial government has pegged at around $1 billion. It’s obvious that hiring hundreds and hundreds of teachers as well as other support staff will be prohibitively expensive, even if Victoria has overstated the costs for dramatic effect, but what’s not clear is who will ultimately pick up the tab. It would seem logical for the province to do so given it controls the funding for B.C.’s public education system, to say nothing of the fact it created this situation in the first place, however the language being used these days suggests that might not be the case. In court documents filed in response to the ruling, Victoria refers to the “financial harm” that would be inflicted on B.C.’s 60 school districts by returning to 2002 levels. There’s no doubt such a move comes with significant cost, but it would only do harm to school districts if the additional burden wasn’t covered by the province and they had to find funding from within. Chopping all kinds of services in order to free up money to reduce class sizes would undoubtedly cause great hardship to the point where you’d have to wonder if the whole exercise wasn’t a step backwards. In Delta’s case, district officials have ballparked the cost of implementing the court ruling at $3.4 million. Can you imagine the impact cutting that kind of money from the budget would have on this district’s day-to-day operations? It wouldn’t be pretty, that’s for sure. I’m not suggesting the court ruling was wrong or that class sizes shouldn’t be lowered, but to do it on the backs of cash-strapped school districts is absolutely ludicrous. The Delta board, like many others, has been hacking and slashing for more than a decade, so if there’s anything left to cut, and I’m dubious there is, I’m certain it’s nowhere near the $3.4 million that’s required. The provincial government has long used school boards and health authorities as human shields, allowing them to take the flak when funding levels don’t meet public expectations. This time around, however, that approach isn’t going to cut it. There’s nothing left for Victoria to do but buck up in order to comply with what the courts have decided.
Delta’s Prayer Breakfast has its roots in the U.S. capital DOUG HUSBAND
COMMUNITY COMMENT In 1953, then U.S. president Dwight D. Eisenhower initiated and hosted the Presidential Prayer Breakfast in Washington, D.C. Bear with me as there is a Delta connection. The former Allied commander in Europe during the Second World War opted for a peaceful exchange between world leaders in Washington. This was Eisenhower’s response to the escalating tensions between world leaders and the Cold War following the armed aggression ending in 1945. This gathering linking spiritual values with leadership became an instant success. All subsequent U.S. presidents have led the Presidential Prayer Breakfast, an event held annually on the first Thursday of February. Now titled the American National Prayer Breakfast and hosted by the United States Congress, it is attended by 3,500 world lead-
ers from over 100 countries. In 1973, Canada’s federal government initiated its own National Prayer Breakfast with similar success. Delta followed in 1974. Then Delta Chamber of Commerce president John Morrison, a businessman and North Delta resident, and Ladner’s John Friesen, amongst others, initiated the Chamber Of Commerce Annual Prayer Breakfast at the Delta Town & Country Inn. This site was chosen because of its central location to our three communities. Delta’s 40th Prayer Breakfast was held earlier this month and was a sold out affair. Always in attendance are Delta’s mayor, councillors, elected provincial and federal personages, religious and community leaders and residents at large. An offshoot of this annual affair is an ongoing local leadership breakfast meeting held on the first Monday of each month. Delta’s annual event is now hosted by a local committee of six chaired by Greg Muirhead. The longevity of this annual event is derived in part from the passionate leadership of a few, supported by an outstanding speakers list and an atmosphere of good fellowship. Delta’s first guest speaker in 1974, Rev. Herbert J. Brandt,

now a robust 90 years young, was active in this year’s proceedings. Various religious and business leaders and politicians have graced the head table speakers list. Those in attendance have heard testimony from star athletes such as Paul Henderson, hero of the 1972 Canada-Russia hockey series, and astronaut Colonel James Irwin of moon buggy fame, to name just a couple. Delta’s connection to the American National Prayer Breakfast was the attendance in 1992 of Dee A. Jepsen, special cabinet advisor on women’s issues to then president Ronald Reagan, who brought her message to a Canadian audience. These successful leaders all expressed strong spiritual values as an integral part in their professional and personal lives. Delta’s Dale Saip introduced this year’s keynote speaker, Dr. Dan Unrau. An academic and local pastor, he spoke of his many experiences, including time spent with survivors in African refugee camps and the palpable discomfort whenever in contact with government soldiers and officials. A noted author and talented storyteller, his message and light-hearted presentation were well received. And a good night to you, Dale.

Can’t be apathetic about towers
Editor: I have been following the efforts of the crossborder coalition to stop the proposed construction of five radio towers in Point Roberts for use by the (unlicensed by CRTC) Sher-EPunjab Radio Broadcasting Inc. Like most of us, I didn’t pay much attention and didn’t want to get involved. However, the more I researched this, the more I felt we, as residents of Tsawwassen, must become
involved and support the people behind the movement to stop the construction. We can’t afford to be apathetic about this. The results will be very detrimental, causing harmful blanketing interference with our Internet service, household appliances, real estate values, etc. I recently contacted the people behind the advertising campaign to see what their qualifications were. I called Jim Ronback and
asked him or his associate to provide me with his background. I was very impressed and I’m pleased to provide it to the public. Ronback worked on the Canada Arm II used on the International Space Station, wrote its System Software Safety manual, trained Canada Space Agency staff, worked on our civilian and military air traffic control systems, and uncovered design weaknesses in the safety shutdown system of the Darlington nuclear
power plant in Ontario, among much else. All that Ronback wants in return for his many hours of work on this issue is that we urge federal Industry Minister James Moore to request the Federal Communication Commission in Washington, D.C. to reconsider its decision and stop the construction of the towers. Please send your request to reconsider to minister. industry@ic.gc.ca. Bob Hughes
No harm in folks growing their own medical marijuana Editor: Re: Medical marijuana isn’t welcome in these parts, Feb. 12 This decision is very counter-productive by limiting the amount of medicine available to patients who happen to use medical cannabis for treating their symptoms.
And prohibiting people from growing their own as well is somewhat Orwellian. I travel by public transit, and if I were a patient who happened to use medical cannabis, I would be annoyed at the fact I have to travel all the way into Vancouver to buy my medicine from a dispensary, then
travel all the way back, and risk getting it stolen from me, not to mention possible harassment from the police. Someone could see me enter a dispensary, wait for me to leave, follow me into a secluded area like an empty Canada Line station, jump me and steal the medicine that is rightfully
mine. Giving people a licence to grow a few plants in the safety of their own home will help a lot. Having three or six plants does not constitute a grow operation; it constitutes someone making their own medicine. Connor Ganuelas
First it was loss of bus service, now it’s backward highway network
Editor: As a resident of Ladner, I am, again, feeling like we have been slighted. First we lost the direct bus route to Vancouver, now we’ve lost one lane to go north onto Highway 99 through the George Massey
Tunnel. It is insane. The people who planned and decided this should be fired. Why? They have taken Ladner residents backwards. It’s natural with the growth of any community that roads are widened and
bridges are built but what did they do? They downgraded a two-lane road to one. This is a travesty. What used to be a 20minute drive to work has become twice as long and even longer if there’s a stall. To think we pay taxes for
this lack of vision makes my blood boil. Tina Gavilan
It’s a dangerous spot for drivers where old hwy. merges with new one
Editor: This letter is being written to bring public attention to two safety issues with the new South Fraser Perimeter Road. When driving from Ladner toward Tsawwassen on Highway 17A, there is a spot just after traffic crosses the overpass at the rail line and Deltaport Way where for three or four seconds at the posted speed the sightlines are such that the roadway blends in with the two lanes of the new SFPR below and makes it appear the correct course is straight ahead. In fact, the correct course is to bear slightly right down the access ramp to merge into those two lanes. There are no concrete barriers along the left side of the road at that point, and it is just a matter of time until someone is going to continue on a straight course and nosedive over that embankment
to the roadway below. Darkness and rain exacerbate the problem. When driving Highway 99 northbound and taking Exit 26 to get to Tsawwassen, the signage directs Tsawwassen motorists into the left lane. As you round the corner a sign indicating an exit ramp to Tsawwassen in the right lane suddenly appears. I took this exit three times and finally realized that if you want to get to Tsawwassen on the SFPR from Exit 26, you have to ignore the signage and stay in the right lane when exiting Highway 99. I was pointing this out to my son, who was driving recently, when a RAV4 in front of us in the left lane almost rolled making a last-second turn to get onto the Tsawwassen exit. Again, just a matter of time until somebody is hurt at this point because of poor design/signage. Lew Edwardson

Heritage preservation work recognized Delta presents awards for restoration of two Ladner buildings and to committee preserving fishing heritage The Corporation of Delta once again used Heritage Week to honour locals who are preserving the past. “Heritage Week is a reminder to us all to take a moment to remember and honour the history of our province and of our own communities here in Delta,” Mayor Lois Jackson said at Monday night’s Delta council meeting. “We are fortunate to have such substantial and interesting heritage, which is still tangible to us in properties and areas such as those being awarded the Heritage Award of Merit and Friends of Heritage awards. “This year’s theme of maritime heritage is especially prominent in Delta where, to this day, our culture thrives in the waters surrounding our community.” A Heritage Award of Merit was awarded to Steve Knoblauch of Ram Construction for the restoration of the former Ladner Baptist Church building on 47A Avenue. Linda Park and Pierre Bonato also received a Heritage Award of Merit

TSAWWASSEN NEEDS YOU TO EMAIL OR WRITE INDUSTRY CANADA MINISTER JAMES MOORE BUT FIRST A RE-CAP: By deliberately omitting Tsawwassen's high population density from their application, Sher-E-Punjab Broadcasting Inc. of Richmond BC and its American affiliate BBC Broadcasting Inc. hoodwinked the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC), as well as Industry Canada (IC), into issuing a construction permit for a site 330 meters south of Tsawwassen, in Point Roberts, where these companies want to relocate their 50,000 watt KRPI 1550 AM transmitter from Ferndale, WA. If installed, they will beam their 50,000 watt signal day and night north to the Lower Mainland, covering Tsawwassen and part of Point Roberts with harmful blanketing interference that will disrupt up to 8,000 households and businesses. FCC and IC rules are supposed to prevent locating AM radio towers near densely populated areas. However, the U.S.-Canada Agreement does not protect citizens, just radio stations. So, since these two companies did not inform the FCC and IC of Tsawwassen’s 22,000 residents, the cross-border effects of blanketing interference on Tsawwassenites were never considered. Tsawwassen needs you to urge Industry Canada minister James Moore and our member of parliament Kerry-Lynne Findlay to appeal to the FCC to review its decision.
•
•
But we need to dispel confusion about two different forms of electromagnetic interference that have been mentioned in correspondence with Industry Canada — harmful blanketing interference and adjacent channel interference, one of which is of concern while the other isn't. Making this distinction is crucial: Adjacent channel interference is of no concern to us; it occurs when one station's frequency or its harmonics distort another station's broadcast for listeners, but, again, this sort of interference is not of concern here. However, blanketing interference is a legitimate concern that is normally subject to regulations in both countries: Harmful blanketing interference - a recognized hazard - from this proposed transmitter's extremely strong electromagnetic signal will upset many householders' and businesses’ electronics because it will overwhelm amplifiers in many devices such as phones, radios,TVs,babyandinvalidmonitors, internetrouters, computersandsoon–disruptingordisablingtheirperformance. What's more, its blanketing interference will block stations across the dial, preventing you from listening to the radio stations of your choice.
Tell your politicians that harmful blanketing interference from the proposed radio towers must be stopped to protect your property values, electronic devices and to protect your families from the potential health effects of long-term exposure to electromagnetic radiation. Please address your emails and letters as follows: Honourable Industry Canada Minister James Moore <minister.industry@ic.gc.ca>, with copies to The Honourable Kerry-Lynne Findlay MP <Kerry-Lynne.Findlay@parl.gc.ca>, and to us at Stop the Border Blaster.

Gold for bronze All eyes are on Sochi as we cheer on the Canadian Olympic team, and for many of you, the teams of your homeland. These dedicated athletes have shown extraordinary skill and discipline to make it this far. Winning any medal is an amazing honour, but of course, everyone dreams of gold. Who would trade gold for bronze on purpose? There is an interesting story in the Bible about a whole nation trading gold for bronze, and it is a compelling reminder of accountability and consequences. King Solomon, third king of ancient Israel, had so much gold that silver was about as valuable as gravel. He had 500 shields made of hammered gold to be used for ceremonial occasions. They were dis-
played in his palace when not in use. But the people were unfaithful to God. Solomon’s heir rejected his father’s faith, and the spiritual and moral condition of the nation deteriorated rapidly. As a result, they were divided in a civil war and the capital city, Jerusalem, came under attack by a powerful foreign enemy. The city was looted and the golden shields were taken. The king made new shields to replace them, but had to settle for bronze. The gold shields were never recovered. A couple of lessons for us today: 1) God holds each of us accountable to him, even if we reject him or don’t even believe he exists; and 2) Today’s choices determine our tomorrows. Let’s never trade gold for bronze.

outh Delta Secondary will be the venue for a comedy night next Friday. Comedians Billy Mitchell, Ivan Decker and Kyle Bottom will perform at the event, which is a fundraiser for the 2014 SDSS Dry Grad. “It’s going to be great. It’s going to be funny. It’s going to be a nice night out without having to drive into Vancouver,” says Mitchell, an experienced Tsawwassen comedian who will emcee the show. Mitchell was also scheduled to lead a stand up comedy workshop with senior students at the Tsawwassen high school. Some students may also get up on stage next Friday and try their hand performing. Both Decker and Bottom are “great guys” who each have their own individual style, says Mitchell. Decker, a former Ladner resident who has performed at the Just for Laughs festivals in Toronto and Montreal, specializes in “dissecting and revealing the humour hiding in the everyday trials of today’s young adult,” his website states. He says he’d rather be silly than shocking or crude. “I’ve never focused strictly on clean comedy; I just write the jokes that I think are funny and it just happens that they are clean. It was never really a conscious effort though it’s just the way I write,” he says in

Delta Idol finalists set to perform BY
DAVE WILLIS
dwillis@delta-optimist.com
Winners will be crowned next Friday at Delta Parks, Recreation & Culture’s live Delta Idol finals. Singers in two age categories (10 to 13 and 14 to 18) will get to perform a song and get feedback from a panel of three judges at the event at the Tsawwassen Arts Centre. Ten finalists were selected from the younger age group and five from the older group. Contest hopefuls sent in video submissions. “Overall it was surprising in a very refreshing way to see how talented the kids were and how brave they were. A lot of them were just sitting in their
living room and belted out a song,” says arts centre recreation programmer Jacqueline Hamlin. Firehall Centre for the Arts recreation programmer Lisa Doepker says a range of music genres were represented in the contestants’ submissions. “It’s a really good mix.” Singers can perform on their own, with a backing track or live accompaniment at the finals. They pick their own songs. The finals take place Friday, Feb. 28 at 7 p.m. at the Tsawwassen Arts Centre, 1172-56th St. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Admission is $10 per person at the door. For more information call 604-943-9437.

Death by desk: this sitting is killing me p.j. wren
Well on Your Way I have played competitive sports, done numerous triathlons, pushed, squatted and pulled my body weight, and ran so many 10-kilometre races that I lost count a few years ago, but nothing has sent me to physio more than sitting at my desk. Canadian adults are now spending about three-quarters of their time sedentary. We start the day seated at the breakfast table, only to go sit in our cars to then sit at our job for eight hours. After that it’s back on our rear-ends and into our cars again for the ride home so we can sit at the dinner table and finally end the day seated on the couch. It’s not great for our bodies or our health, and all of this sitting has some serious consequences for both. How serious? In one
study, researchers found that being sedentary boosted the inflammatory marker, C-reactive protein. An increased level of this protein is related to many major diseases, including coronary heart disease. In another study that compared adults who spent less than two hours a day in front of the TV or other screen-based activities (like the computer), to those who logged more than four hours a day found the fourhour-a-day group had an almost 50 percent increased risk of death and a 125 per cent increased risk of an event associated with cardiovascular disease, like angina or a heart attack. Those who sit will also have decreased metabolisms, because our bodies will only expend energy when energy is used, leading to weight gain and the host of problems associated with being overweight. Sitting is also a buzz kill for the musculoskeletal system, like the legs, knees, low back, hips, shoulders

“tech neck” because it’s related to using a mouse) are killing me because of all this computer work. I
have to work, so I came up with a plan — I won’t sit, I will stand instead. After Googling standing desks and seeing the average desk was about $1,200, I knew I needed a back up plan, so I enlisted the help of loving husband (who actually has a local business called the “Handy Husband”) to find a solution for me. He did (he’s amazing). He turned my existing desk into a standing desk for only $25 — the perfect budget for anyone. These are the tools you will need: an IKEA Lack Side Table ($14.99), two IKEA Ekby Valter shelf brackets ($2.50 each) and an IKEA Ekby Viktor shelf ($4.99). How did he do it? He placed the Lack side table on top of my existing desk, attached the Ekby shelf on the front of the Lack side table for my keyboard and mouse to rest on, and voila, I now have a standing desk. Now, this didn’t solve all my problems. In fact, stand-
ing all the time sent my low back and hip flexors into major spasms — I guess that’s why professionals recommend a 50/50 combination of sitting and standing. So, it was back to the Handy Husband to build me a little step to lift one foot up while I stand (easier on the low back), and I then ordered an anti-fatigue mat to stand on as well from Staples. I now sit half the time (by simply removing my new standing desk — it’s quite light and takes seconds to lift off my desk), and stand the other half. If you sit in front of the computer for any duration, I highly recommend this easy and economical solution for you too. Need a Handy Husband? Email Larry at lbragg@ dccnet.com. PJ Wren is a local personal trainer who, when not chained to her desk, can be found on Delta TV weekdays at 7 a.m., 1 p.m. and 6 p.m. for her Fitness with PJ show.

Trellis not for heavier plants anne marrison
Green Room This week I answer questions from readers: Q: I phoned some building supply stores and none had willow trellises. One source said they would be too flimsy to be useful. Can you give me further info? A: Willow trellises and towers are available locally from West Coast Seeds (www.westcoastseeds.com). Both wooden supports are being advertised for lightweight plants such as sweet peas, cucumbers, climbing peas and beans. The trellis and tower are not recommended for very heavy weights such as pole beans, tall peas or extremely dense plantings of climbers. Heritage beans are usually around one metre long and I’ve found them awkward because, if left unsup-

It is in large patches of my lawn clover briefly before the
deep roots re-shoot. The easiest way to tackle clover is to get the lawn aerated in spring by a machine. This would tear up a lot of clover’s roots, which can then be raked out. You could then spread compost (weed-free commercial compost is easily available) over the lawn and re-seed it with grass. It’s important to check the grass seed mix because many include white clover seed. Since new lawns need about an inch of water a week, try to time the planting for a time when nature should be providing the water. To shade out the clover, the lawn should be mown to a height of about seven centimetres and the grass clippings left in place to help nourish the grass. Mowing twice will break up the clippings faster. Anne Marrison is happy to answer garden questions. Send them to her via amarrison@shaw.ca. It helps to add the name of your city or region.
Will be retiring from general practice on May 1st, 2014. His Associates will assume Care of his Patients until a replacement is found.

Familiar script for Hawks in opener
Too many penalties and unproductive power play add up to 4-3 overtime loss to Wolf Pack BY
MARK BOOTH
mbooth@delta-optimist.com
Bad habits are hard to break and it will cost the Delta Ice Hawks their season if they don’t do it soon enough. The Ice Hawks opened the Pacific Junior Hockey League playoffs Tuesday with a 4-3 overtime loss to the North Vancouver Wolf Pack. The best-of-seven series continues tonight and Saturday on the North Shore before returning here for game four on Tuesday (7:30 p.m.). It was a familiar theme to so many of Delta’s defeats this season — too many penalties and a power play that wasn’t productive enough. The hosts got off to a terrific start on first period goals 62 seconds apart from Mark Trotman and Connor Fortem. However, four consecutive minor penalties in the middle stanza swung the momentum of the game and allowed the Wolf Pack to cut the margin in half. When the Hawks failed to capitalize on a lengthy two-man advantage, North Vancouver struck again on the power play to pull even after two periods. The comeback was complete when Quiton Vitek banged home a rebound at the 4:29 mark of overtime after Delta captain Dave Rudin had tied the game with 1:14 left. “We just got into our bad habits again,” sighed Hawks head coach

Delta Ice Hawks Brent Chreptyk is turned back on this scoring chance during Tuesday’s PJHL quarter-final series opener against the North Vancouver Wolf Pack in Ladner. The visitors posted a 4-3 win in overtime. Derek Chichak. “You can’t kill penalties forever. Your top players get tired and that’s what happened. You just can’t play two lines all the time. At the end of the day, penalties are our nemesis again.” The Hawks had a week to pre-
pare for the series and spent much of the time trying to ignite a power play that has struggled much of the season. Rudin’s late tally prevented a goose egg on five opportunities. “Everything we practiced just got lost by the waste side and we
went back to our old habits,” continued Chichak. “Three guys at the net and shooting pucks. We worked on it all week and then slid back to our old ways. That’s all they did and every goal they got was like that. It’s pretty frustrating.”
Mixed results for Pacers in Valley hoop playoffs The treacherous road that is the Fraser Valley basketball playoffs cost one Delta Pacers team its season on Wednesday night while another moved on with huge challenges on the horizon. The Pacers’ bid to advance to the upcoming provincial junior boys basketball championships ended with second round loss to the upstart Earl Marriott Mariners. The South Surrey school entered the 32-team tournament as the 22nd seed then promptly dominated its quadrant — first taking out No. 11 Port Moody (61-44), before another impressive win over the No. 6 Pacers.
Delta was trying to qualify for the provincial tournament for the first time in recent memory. The Ladner school reached the Fraser Valley quarter finals four years ago and, back in 2008, held the No. 1 ranking in the province but was shocked in the opening round by WJ Mouat. Meanwhile, the DSS senior boys team did the expected and took care of business in the Fraser Valley AAAA playoffs and now must roll up its sleeves and get ready for some serious work. The No. 13 seed Pacers toppled No. 20 Centennial 61-45 in a sudden death elimination game. They now move onto the 16-school main
draw which features 10 of the top 15 ranked teams in the province and only six B.C. berths up for grabs. The Pacers travel to Coquitlam tonight to face No. 4 ranked Gleneagle Talons. A loss would send them to consolation play Monday against likely Heritage Woods who face No. 5 Sardis in the opening round. The Port Moody school is an honourable mention in the latest rankings. In total, Delta will have to defeat three ranked schools to take their season to next month’s provincials at the Langley Events Centre.

The treatments she really enjoys providing are the combined therapies. The Hydrating and Toning Facial combined with the Laser Re-firm Skin Tightening is my favorite treatment, “Judy says” because there is an obvious visual difference as well as a long lasting result in skin tonicity. Speaking from personal experience this is a very effective treatment for anyone experiencing sagging skin. It really inspires me when my clients feel better about themselves as a result of a treatment provided by me or one of my team mates.
This is an incredibly rewarding treatment for me to perform Shannon says. This treatment combines laser therapy with the full spa experience. Massage and a hydrating masque have been added to ensure this is much more than your typical medical esthetic treatment
A favourite treatment of Shannon’s to perform (and receive!) is the Photo Rejuvenation Facial. We use bipolar radio frequency and light energies to treat a number of skin conditions including unsightly pigmentation spots, vascular damage and Rosacea. Essentially we are minimizing the appearance of sun damage while at the same time increasing collagen production which helps

year, says Gillian, I am keenly aware of how the aging process has reduced my once plump, grape like collagen cells to withered, dried and raisin-like…and my elastin, which once provided effortless lift and tone now as useless as a forgotten brittle, elastic band buried deep in my kitchen junk drawer! To the rescue is my favourite treatment at Atlantis Day Spa: ReFirm /Skin Tightening, targeting my turkey neck and sagging under the eyes and jowls! The combined bi-polar radio frequency and light energies of our Elos technology precisely heats the dermal tissue within the targeted treatment area. This stimulates collagen production and produces a firming effect in lax skin. Wrinkles are reduced, noticeable lifting can be observed and the texture of my skin becomes smoother, more luminous and toned rivalling my 24 year old daughter’s skin! Hooray! Vitamin D deficiency drains $9 billion from Canadian Health Care system The bulbs we use at Hawaiian Beach sun bed Salon can, in most cases, give you this optimum level of Vitamin D. Our world could not survive without U.V. light. • Google Carole ‘A’ Baggerly (Breast Cancer Survivor) • Dr. Michael Holick Boston ‘U’. • Grassroots Health Research has left no doubt that Vitamin D deficiency - which affects 97% of Canadians in winter - is nothing less than a Canadian crisis and world wide problem. Dr. William Grant (www.sunarc.org) calculates the cost of Vitamin D deficiency to be no less than $9 billion annually. A Creighton University study showed that people rich in Vitamin D have up to a 77% lower overall cancer risk. In the Canadian Pediatric Society recommended that pregnant women consult their physicians about getting 2000 I.U. of Vitamin D daily - 10 times the current government recommendations.
The Canadian Cancer Society has called for all Canadian adults to get 1000 I.U. of Vitamin D daily. The key message the Vitamin D Society wants Canadians to receive is: that we are at risk of Vitamin D deficiency because of our country’s relatively weak sunshine most of the year and the fact that Vitamin D is rare in diet. With thanks to the Vitamin D Society for this info, who incidentally recommends asking your doctor for an annual blood test to check your Vitamin D levels. Optimal Vitamin D blood levels are 50ng/ml (125nmol/L). Calcidiol Test.
