The Delta school board stands by everything it’s done to advocate for increased funding for the education system. Chair Laura Dixon defended the board’s record during public submissions Tuesday on the upcoming budget in response to a suggestion by teachers it should
be doing more. Delta Teachers’ Association president Paul Steer, the first speaker, said the B.C. School Trustees Association has been advocating for better resources and funding, so Delta should add to the call. “Your own representative body, the BCSTA, has done as much, so it is incumbent upon you not to remain silent and to add your
individual and collective voices in support of public education, this very essential part of the government’s realm of responsibility,” Steer said. He said teachers are urging the board to adopt a policy of “constructive adversarial engagement” against the government’s policies. Steer said the district should also begin planning now to integrate the recent B.C. Supreme

A locally-based flight school has partnered with a Lower Mainland college to offer a new professional pilot training program. Professional Flight Centre, which has been offering flight training for almost 30 years, recently partnered with Douglas College to create an Associate of Arts for Future Professional Pilots program. The academic classes are taught at the college campus, while flight training takes place at Professional Flight Centre’s headquarters near the Boundary Bay Airport. Owners John and Blythe Montgomery recently proudly showed off their operation, which is one of Canada’s largest and most respected flight training institutions. The operation includes 22 aircraft, two full motion flight simulators and a fully-equipped maintenance facility. The full-time course also allows students to transfer

The BCSTA has been a strong, effective advocate on our behalf,” Dixon said. “We stand by our record for support for public education, we stand by record of support for all the people that work in our district, and we stand by our record of putting our interest for students first.” Dixon’s support for the BCSTA came despite a motion earlier in the meeting by trustee Dale Saip,

CUPE Local 1091 president Colin Pawson and parent Brad Sherwin were the only others to make presentations Tuesday. Pawson suggested the board not bother undertaking a satisfaction survey, noting it would find low morale because employees are having a harder time doing their jobs properly due to cuts. Sessions are planned for Saturday, March 22 from 10 a.m. until 12 p.m., and Wednesday, March 19 and 26 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Professional Flight Centre is located at 6-4340 King St., Ladner. For more information call 604-952-4635 or visit www. proifr.com. It’s faced with additional costs in a number of areas, including the CUPE settlement and a B.C. Hydro rate increase. Good news didn’t come from the provincial government’s latest budget, which provided no new money for the K-12 system. Last year the board made $1.9 million in cuts to balance the books, the most contentious being the reduction of bus service. District staff will release budget recommendations on April 11. A meeting to hear public input on those recommendations will take place at the school board office April 15. A week later, on April 22, the board is to consider approving the budget.

Jennifer Clarke elected as CUPE Local 454 president BY
Delta’s unionized workforce has a new president. Jennifer Clarke won the presidency of CUPE Local 454 in a membership vote last month, replacing Darryl Robison, who did not run again. Her only challenger for the two-year term was John Gibson. A Tsawwassen resident, Clarke is an eightyear employee for the Corporation of Delta, currently working in the legal services department. She told the Optimist she decided to run for the presidency to provide a new voice as well as make a difference. The union represents more than 850 civic employees. It also represents civilians at the Delta Police Department and Delta Museum and Archives employees, although contract negotiations with those workers are held separately.

Only one Delta public school managed to crack the top 200 in the latest edition of the Fraser Institute’s controversial rankings of B.C. elementary schools. Released this week, the annual Report Card showed the three highest rated schools in Delta were all private institutions, headed by Tsawwassen’s Southpointe Academy, which placed 69th out of 982 B.C. schools. Immaculate Conception and Sacred Heart also placed in the top 100. The top public elementary school was Cliff Drive, which was ranked 199th overall. The rankings are based on 10 academic indicators using data from the annual Foundation Skills
Assessment exams. The Fraser Institute says parents can use the website compareschoolrankings.org to measure their school’s performance over the past five years, including areas of improvement or decline. They can also compare their school with others in the province. “Our website provides parents and educators with objective information that’s hard to find anywhere else. If you’re a parent at a school with a consistently low ranking, or a school with declining results, you should ask the principal about improvement plans and when student performance is expected to improve,” said Peter Cowley, the Fraser Institute’s director of school performance studies. B.C. teachers have long dismissed the Report Card

as both flawed and misleading. They’ve also been critical of the FSA tests. As far as the Delta school district, it doesn’t consider the Fraser Institute rankings a true reflection of the school system. “In Delta, we have a strong commitment to ensuring students reach their full potential and this is reinforced by our District Vision of being a leading district for innovative teaching and learner success. We have a vast array of programs and initiatives geared at achieving this goal, such as early literacy programs,” said spokesperson Deneka Michaud. “At the elementary level, for example, we have a co-ordinator of elementary literacy who is developing resource handbooks for early primary teachers,” Michaud said.

DSS classes collaborate to build cabin Drafting and carpentry students combine skills to design and construct vacation home for Ladner family BY
JULIA VERGARA
Optimist contributor
This year’s Delta Secondary drafting and carpentry students combined their skills to draw and construct a cabin for a Ladner family in 100 Mile House. In previous years the carpentry students in Wayne McKinnon’s class have had an opportunity to build vacation homes, sheds and garages, while students in Glen Addison’s drafting class have created drawings and models of numerous projects. For the first time this year, the classes collaborated on a single project. The drafting class did the drawings for the cabin that’s being built by the construction class on the grounds of the Ladner high school, allowing drafting students to see walls drawn on computer software go up before their eyes. Principal Terry Ainge says it’s an initiative by the teachers of the tech classes. “They are trying to create real relevant experiences for their students,” Ainge says. Since September, a team

The cabin will be assembled in 100 Mile House. of five drafting students has been creating drawings on AutoCAD for carpentry students. Students from both classes have been working together for months and the cabin is now ready to be assembled in 100 Mile House. Ainge says it’s exciting for students to take a project from concept to fruition. “It exposes them through various stages of project management,” he says, adding they usually only see their own discipline area.
“The drafting students are now able to see the next stages, walk outside and see what’s happening through the construction process and see their design come to life. And the construction students are able to know where the concept, these ideas, came from. There is an opportunity for an exchange, some real authentic feedback.” Carpentry teacher McKinnon says the cabins have to be designed and built to code.
“These houses have to pass inspection and the plans have to go through the municipality for an approval as well,” he says. “We can take a little extra time here at the school because we are learning as we go, but when it’s done, it has to be as professional as any other house that’s built.” One of McKinnon’s carpentry students, Jace Day, who is part of the crew that will go to assemble the cabin in 100 Mile House,
plans to pursue trades after completing high school. “This gives me an experience working with floor plans and drawings and also it’s just good to see on a resume, to see that I have built a cabin,” Day says. Drafting teacher Addison says his students were pretty excited to see their drawings come to life. “That changes things. Not too many students get to do that. They get to actually start from zero, with some ideas and then put it
together, make some changes and start to see it grow.” Matthew Wegener, one of Addison’s students, says: “I get to see it (the plans) evolve over time and see it built up and make changes.” Ashley Robinson, who is planning to study architectural design upon graduation, is also pleased to have been involved in the process. “It’s definitely a different experience because we haven’t done anything like this.”

Eight organizations get gaming grants
The provincial government has awarded almost a quarter of a million dollars in community gaming grants to eight Delta organizations so far this year: • Reach Child and Youth Development Society — $92,000 • Delta branch of the Canadian Mental Health Association — $85,000 • Pony Pals Therapeutic Riding Association — $30,000 • Knights of Columbus, Immaculate Conception Council — $10,000 • Sunshine Hills Parent Participation Preschool — $7,000 • Lions Club of Tsawwassen-Boundary
Bay — $11,500 • Scouts Canada (3rd Boundary Bay) — $7,100 • The Lutins Du Bois French language preschool — $6,300 “As a longtime resident of Delta, I’ve seen firsthand how important these organizations are to our community,” Delta North MLA Scott Hamilton said. “This money will help Delta continue to be a great place to call home.” Organizations interested in applying for community gaming grants can find application information at pssg.gov.bc.ca/gaming.

Driver’s refusal results in 90-day prohibition
The purpose of the Crime Beat is to educate and inform the public about some of the property crime trends occurring in South Delta and other files of interest. If you see anything occurring that you believe to be suspicious, call 911 for in-progress crimes and emergencies or 604-9464411 for other assistance. The following are some of the calls the Delta police responded to in the previous week: Tsawwassen • March 5, 4:47 a.m., 100-block of 67th Street: Complainant reported observing two people inside an orange SUV. The passenger was getting out of the vehicle and searching yards with a flashlight. Police set up a containment of the area, however an extensive search did not locate the vehicle. • March 6, 3:22 p.m., 1A Avenue and 67th Street: Report received that a male was going door-to-door soliciting yard work but did not have any gardening tools with him. Police attended and located the male who was legitimately offering his services to aerate lawns. Nothing suspicious or of concern. • March 6, 4:55 p.m., 4800-block of 53rd Street: Vehicle left in parking lot was entered sometime overnight by an unknown person. There was no damage to the vehicle as it was left unlocked. Items stolen included a 32GB iPad. An attempt to locate the iPad with the GPS search system did not pinpoint the exact location of the iPad and a search of the area by police proved negative. • March 7, 3:57 p.m., 5500-block of 15B Avenue:
Report received that two storage lockers were broken into sometime over the last several days. Investigation found three lockers had been entered by prying the hinges out of the wooden lockers. The scene was checked for fingerprints but nothing of significance found.
• March 8, 9:30 a.m., 5500-block of Summer Way: Complainant reported seeing two suspicious people in the yard. One of the suspects was in the driveway while the other was standing by the shed eyeing the lock. Both the suspects fled when they saw the complainant at the door. Ladner • March 3, 10:49 a.m., 5000-block of 48th Avenue: A women’s brown leather wallet containing bank cards and personal papers was found outside the Ladner Library. Efforts to locate the owner were not successful as the phone numbers were not in service. Owner can claim the wallet upon identification at the Ladner Community Police Station. • March 5, 8:21 p.m., 7000-block of 72nd Street: Police investigating a hit and run collision noticed symptoms of alcohol consumption and the odour of alcohol on the driver’s breath. The driver refused to provide a sample of breath into an approved screening device and as a result was issued a 90-day immediate roadside prohibition. The driver was picked up from the scene and the vehicle was impounded for 30 days. • March 6, 8:05 p.m.,
River Road/Alexander Road: Police were operating a traffic control point when a driver attempted to bypass the officer. The driver provided a breath sample into an approved screening device, resulting in a FAIL reading but a second test resulted in a WARN reading. The driver was issued a three-day immediate roadside prohibition and the vehicle was impounded for seven days. • March 7, 12:01 a.m., 4400-block of Arthur Drive: Police pulled over a vehicle observed swerving within the lanes and travelling below the posted speed limit. The driver smelled strongly of alcohol and admitted to consuming several beers. The driver received a FAIL reading on two separate approved screening devices and was issued a 90-day immediate roadside prohibition. The vehicle was impounded for 30 days. Did you know? If a peace officer suspects you are affected by alcohol while you have care and control of a motor vehicle they can demand you provide a sample of your breath into an approved screening device to measure your blood alcohol content. If the officer intends to issue you an immediate roadside prohibition, the officer is then required to offer you a second opportunity to provide a sample of your breath into a different approved screening device. If the results differ, the lower of the two results will prevail. If you refuse to provide a breath sample, you will be issued a 90-day immediate roadside prohibition and mandatory 30-day vehicle impound.

MURPHY’S LAW I don’t pretend to understand the complexities of the trucking industry and its relationship with Lower Mainland ports, but I do know the ongoing dispute has brought to light a couple of issues that have been debated in these parts for years. The current work stoppage has not only demonstrated how vital ports are to our economy, which has never really been in question, but has also given us a taste of what it would be like if our port facilities didn’t keep pace with demand. Port Metro Vancouver officials have spewed platitudes about the benefits of international trade and the need to accommodate such for so long it’s become little more than white noise around here. When you play host to a port, the idea of greater economic good tends to get lost among the ever-increasing number of trucks on the highways, the insatiable appetite for more land and the impacts on a fragile environment. In short, we see the worst in this economic engine for the country. But when there’s a disruption that limits the flow of goods, it doesn’t take long to realize how much we depend on that trade in our everyday lives. It might seem trivial, but a piece on the TV news earlier this week about bars worried they wouldn’t be getting their shipment of Guinness in time for St. Patrick’s Day exemplified how ports touch our lives in so many different ways. The longer the dispute drags on, the more instances we’re going to hear about port-related shortages. Another issue that has come to the forefront during the work stoppage is the rigidity of the supply chain and the repercussions that creates. Truckers are understandably upset by the amount of time they must wait to either pick up or drop off containers, but despite a number of efficiencies put in place over the years, it’s obvious that only so much can be moved in and out of a port over the course of a regular work day. Should that volume get spread out over a longer period, I assume those delays would be minimized, perhaps even eliminated, but that would take co-operation from all players, including those receiving the shipments, in the supply chain. An 18- or 24-hour day would not only smooth out the congestion being felt at the ports, but it would also take trucks off the road during peak times, quite likely improving the plight of the beleaguered commuter. And for a community like Delta that bears a greater burden than any other when it comes to truck traffic, that switch can’t come soon enough.
Pioneers put a ‘hall’ of a lot of work into the community DOUG HUSBAND
COMMUNITY COMMENT Delta’s community spirit was inspired by its pioneering families following incorporation in 1879 and extended to the first community centres, which were all built with volunteer labour. Ladners Landing opened its town hall on Elliott Street in 1885. This was the site of the first fall fair in 1888, organized by the Delta Agricultural Society. The corner of Chisholm and Elliott streets was a hive of civic and community affairs with its proximity to the municipal office and nearby hotel. With a substantial increase in population following the First World War, there was a need for larger facilities in Ladner, as well as in the Sunbury/Annieville area and in East Delta. In 1919, the residents of the predominately fishing community in Sunbury opened their community centre adjacent the Fraser River. In 1962, their current hall opened at Sunbury Park on Dunlop Road and
remains in operation today. In 1926, and largely with volunteer labour, Ladner opened its community hall at the corner of Elliott and Chisholm streets. This was the site of Delta’s civic and community activity until it was destroyed by fire in 1968. Generations of families celebrated New Year’s Eve galas, weddings and anniversaries, movies, theatre productions, talent contests, amateur boxing tournaments and the list goes on. Forty years of documented family memories were lost that tragic night. The third, and likely the highest profile, community hall still active is the East Delta Hall on Highway 10. In 1875, John McKee and family settled in the East Delta farm community and McKee donated land for St. David’s United Church. Discussions ensued on the need for a church hall to meet the social needs of the congregation. The community agreed to build a separate centre with free use for church activities. John’s son, David McKee, donated land for the hall site. In 1930, the McKee Athletic Association was formed and volunteer labour organized. Driftwood logs were hauled off the beach and Douglas fir logged off Sunshine Hills. The logs were hauled by horses to Lester Embree’s farm and

sawn into building material. The main builders and organizers besides Lester Embree were his brother George, Thomas Robertson and Leonard Dennis. These original settlers and many volunteers opened the hall doors on Feb. 11, 1931. For 50 years, Dennis was East Delta’s Santa Claus, first at the St. David’s Church and then the East Delta Hall. In those days, East Delta had its own elementary school and held school plays as well as Christmas and Halloween parties at the hall. It was the home for wedding receptions, dances and famous fundraising box socials. The hall was also known for its many athletic competitions: boxing, basketball and tennis in the two outdoor courts. East Delta’s civic spirit was tested in 1993 when fire engulfed one-third of the hall. Like their fathers and grandfathers before them, the directors of the McKee Athletic Society rallied to the cause and the hall was reopened on Sept. 24, 1995. As a result of this phenomenal accomplishment, the directors of the McKee Athletic Society were recognized as Delta’s 1995 Citizen of the Year. Now that’s community spirit! And a good night to you, McKee Athletic Society.

Time to fund tower fight Editor: The Cross-Border Coalition has put out a call for funds to help fight and stop the installation of the KRPI radio transmitter towers in Point Roberts. Donating to the legal fund is a relatively effortless but very effective way for all Tsawwassen residents to help stop these tower transmitter installations. If Tsawwassen residents experience the same interference problems that the residents of Ferndale are experiencing, notwithstanding the possible health and property value concerns,
what is the cost to you for the aggravation, the inconvenience and invasion of privacy you may experience? If you and your home experience similar interference problems, and if and when KRPI responds to you out of a queue of thousands, how fast will that response be? How effective will it be? Who will pay for the “fixes” and how much of your time will you have to stay at home waiting for the engineer to arrive? What is your time worth to you? Given the nightmarish scenario described above,
I believe that digging into your pocket now and sending in a donation to the good people of the CrossBorder Coalition to help fund the lawyers fighting this issue before it is too late is money well spent. Every dollar (Canadian or U.S.) helps. Donate at the following: • Town hall meeting on Tuesday, March 18 at 7 p.m. at Tsawwassen United Church, 693-53rd St. • At www.notowers.webs. com. • Send cheque to PRTA/ FTT, P.O. Box 158, Point Roberts, WA, 98281. David Bowyer
Increased fees and rates will take toll
Editor: Re: B.C. families have one of the lowest overall tax burdens, letter to the editor, March 5 I appreciate the finance minister’s response to my comments on the budget. As the minister points out, the decrease in the personal income tax exemption is a part of the return of the PST. What the minister did not address were my comments that the change comes at a time when the government is hitting British Columbians with rising hydro and
ICBC rates, ferry fare hikes, and increased tuition rates and MSP premiums. This year’s budget predicts that a senior couple earning $30,000 of pension income, and a family of four earning the same, will pay more in provincial taxes this year. According to the government’s documents, they’ll be paying $152 and $284 more, respectively, primarily in sales and property taxes. If you have a higher income, then you can expect to pay more in MSP premiums. It’s true there are items
in this year’s budget that will help families, and I spoke to some of those measures in my previous comments. Nevertheless, the government and minister should be honest about how increased fees and taxes will affect everyone in B.C. Whether it’s through taxes or rate increases, more of your money will be going to the province in 2014. And as I said, for those of us on fixed income, it can be a difficult reality. I accidentally sat on my very expensive sunglasses that I had purchased in Italy a couple of years ago, badly twisting the frame and popping out one lens. Editor: Re: It’s imperative not to confuse capitalism with democracy, letter to the editor, Feb. 28, and Ideals depend on each other, letter to the editor, March 5 R. Brown’s letter was one of the best letters I have seen in a long time. In response to Bob Orrick’s letter on the same subject, I respectfully disagree. Orrick writes: “For capitalism to succeed, democracy is a necessary ingredient; for democracy to succeed, capitalism is a prime component.” Unfortunately, this does not always ring true. Hong Kong is a prime example of successful capitalism. Hong Kong was a British colony and democracy was only an afterthought just prior to the handover to China in 1997. The People’s Republic of China is an extreme example of capitalism. To date, democracy has yet to
Penny Pretty girl Penny was surrendered to the shelter through no fault of her own. Her previous owner was worried about her own health as Penny loved to rub against her feet and cut her off for love and attention. Being an elderly lady, the fear of tripping, falling and hurting herself made her decide to bring Penny to the shelter for a more appropriate home. Penny is said to be a loyal, affectionate and easy-going gal that loves to play with little rubber balls and will chase them around the house. Penny is very good in the home and has no tendency to be destructive. She does not enjoy the attention of other cats but LOVES attention from people! An adult (or older kids) home all to herself would be ideal for this love bug!!

Potential development on both sides of the Roberts Bank causeway isn’t part of Port Metro Vancouver’s environmental review for Terminal 2. That’s because development there isn’t reasonably foreseeable for now, according to the port authority. Following a recent presentation by Port Metro Vancouver president and CEO Robin Silvester to the Delta Chamber of Commerce, officials with the port held a briefing for the media to explain the extensive environmental assessment and field work that’s underway in advance of submitting an application to build Terminal 2, a threeberth container facility proposed adjacent to the threeberth Deltaport container terminal. That work will form
as the future T2. Prior to reaching the current terminal, both sides of the causeway are now just water, presently designated as “Port Marine/Port Water.” The new designation would change to “Special Study Area.” According to the port, having areas with such a designation means additional study, consultation and planning are required. The port received scathing criticism a few years ago for separating an application to add a third berth at Deltaport from the future T2 before the environmental review process. Noting the third berth application, however, did include a cumulative effect analysis, Cliff Stewart, Port Metro Vancouver’s vicepresident of infrastructure delivery, said it simply can’t be the case for a study area when it comes to the T2 application.

what’s known as an environmental impact statement, which will be submitted to the federal government by the end of the year and will trigger an extensive environmental review of the application. Noting there hasn’t been any major environmental concerns identified so far, biologist Ben Wheeler said the port should have a high degree of confidence its studies are both robust and defensible. As far as studying the combined impacts of T2 with future development at Roberts Bank, the analysis hasn’t gone that far because nothing more is specifically planned at this point. The port authority recently released its latest draft of an extensive Land Use Plan, which has a graphic depicting the causeway from the shoreline of the Tsawwassen First Nation to the existing terminal as well

tion for Terminal 2. The port authority says three studies are underway, including one examining the existing visual impacts at Roberts Bank as well as identifying potential lighting changes associated with the proposed three-berth container terminal. Another is a continuation a study of the behaviour of marine mammals in the vicinity of the marine terminals. The third is a study on the impact of underwater noise levels on southern resident killer whales. For the marine mammal observation study, the port says a ground-based remote video surveillance system may be used. For the underwater noise study, ambient noise levels and marine mammal vocalizations will be recorded continuously for one year at Roberts Bank using a hydrophone cabled to shore. All the field studies will eventually form an environ-
mental impact statement, a comprehensive document to be submitted to the federal government at the end of this year or early 2015. Once submitted, it will launch a lengthy environmental review process involving an independent panel. Port Metro Vancouver says it’s also continuing a comprehensive consultation process that began in June 2011. The port is also planning further environmental projects in Delta, including creating a new tidal marsh habitat near Canoe Pass, as part of a “habitat banking” program, designed to give the port environmental credits in advance of T2. The port authority recently released its 2013 year-end results showing its facilities handled 135 million tonnes of cargo, a record for Port Metro Vancouver and an overall increase of nine per cent over 2012.

Inter-dependence We live in times where the influential concept of independence has infiltrated almost every aspect of our lives. Our early education systems want children to become independent at younger ages. Our post-secondary systems claim to form independent thinkers for the world of business and career paths that seem to reward independence. While I don’t deny there is a place for some level of independence, I think it has too often been pushed to its limit and has been found lacking. Independence ultimately separates, divides and risks dissolving our foundational need for healthy community. Ironically, healthy community is the only place where independence can continue to exist at any level. I write these thoughts as I sit in a Jesuit retreat center in Montreal,
where I am part of a leadership team of a silent retreat for L’Arche assistants/caregivers from all across Canada. Many L’Arche assistants have come from independencefocused schools or work situation and have chosen to live in community with people with developmental disabilities. Very often this choice has transformed their lives, opening them to adopt a stance of inter-dependence, recognizing, valuing and celebrating every person. It is a radical shift that proves to be far more practical than the extremes of either dependence or independence. Churches, when lived truthfully and faithfully, are also local examples of healthy inter-dependent communities. Check it out. You may be surprised.

Elvis extravaganza rolls into town BY
DAVE WILLIS
dwillis@delta-optimist.com
A trio of tribute artists will pay homage to the King of Rock and Roll at a concert in Ladner next Wednesday. The Elvis Elvis Elvis, An American Trilogy show will take place at Genesis Theatre and will feature performances from Chris Connor, Ted Torres and Brandon Bennett. Connor, who hails from Manchester, England, will perform as ‘70s era Elvis with songs like Suspicious Minds, Polk Salad Annie, Just Pretend and You’ve Lost that Loving Feeling. Connor has been an Elvis tribute artist for about five years. He took it up after following advice from friends who heard him singing Elvis at karaoke bars, he says in an email to the Optimist. He says his goal and dream was to perform an honest and respectful tribute to Elvis. “To be doing so and gaining fans worldwide is just overwhelming,” he says. Connor sang at the Penticton Elvis Festival last June and says he’s happy to be coming back to Canada to perform for the fans here. “His style was one of a kind and had never been seen before and will never be seen again. He truly was the King of Rock and Roll.” Elvis Elvis Elvis, An American Trilogy comes to Genesis Theatre, 5005-45th Ave., Ladner Wednesday, March 19 at 7:30 p.m. Call 604-507-6355 or visit bellperformingartscentre.com for tickets ($41.50). Ladner’s Nathen Aswell will be back at the Genesis Theatre for another live@5005 concert series performance next Friday. Aswell, who performs a brand of “conscious pop,” was at the local venue last March. He’ll be playing tunes from his latest CD YES and his first album Little By Little using an NS Stick, an eight-stringed electronic instrument that can be plucked like a bass, played like a guitar or tapped with both hands like a piano. “Probably 90 per cent of the time I perform on my own. The beauty of that instrument is that it gives me a nice, full sound,” says Aswell. He’ll be performing with
friends on guitar and drums at the upcoming concert, which should provide “a really big sound.” Aswell says “95 per cent” of all stick players were inspired to play it by Tony Levin, a musician known for his work with Peter Gabriel and King Crimson. “I remember hearing the bass lines and going, ‘What is that?’ recalls Aswell, referring to listening to hit Gabriel songs in the late ‘70s and early ‘80s. The version of the stick that Aswell uses came out years later. He got his first one secondhand in 2002 and used it as a bass for a while before immersing himself in the instrument’s technique. “I started doing shows completely using my stick in 2009 and I haven’t looked back,” he says. “My guitar is pretty lonely but I’m happy that I made the
choice.” Aswell, who’s been moving towards songs with choruses that people can sing along with, says he’ll be encouraging a lot of audience participation at the Genesis show. “A big phrase for me the last year or two of my life around what I do is wanting to move the experience from me and change it to we,” he says, adding he wants to create much more of an inclusive experience and not just him standing up and singing some songs. Aswell will be at Genesis Theatre, 5005-45th Ave., on Friday, March 21 at 8 p.m. Tickets are $15, cash only, at the door on the night of the performance. For more on Aswell check out his website at www.nathenaswell. com.

Ladner writer to hold double Concert raising book launch at local library funds for show BY
DAVE WILLIS
dwillis@delta-optimist.com
Ladner author Cynthia Elizabeth Sully is holding a double book launch next week. One of her new books is Colour Beautiful Life Sunny, a sequel to her 2008 novel Child of Where Two Oceans Meet. The follow up novel is again set in Sully’s home country of South Africa. It is set after the apartheid era and sees the return of main character Fleur Rowin Elizabeth Eugene, along with her family. “Not only her family and friends but her enemies as well,” says Sully, adding that it’s a “very exciting” tale. Her other new release is titled Happiest Splash. “I wanted to do something very different,” says Sully, describing the book as a compendium with “all sorts of things in it.” There are short stories, poetry, a recipe section and more. There’s a lot of humour in the book but it has some serious material as well, she explains. Proceeds from both books will go to the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation
of Canada. Sully has family members who suffer from Crohn’s. The book launch is set for Saturday, March 22 at 1 p.m. at Ladner Pioneer Library. There will be refreshments, South African food, prizes and live African drumming.

Canadians have a Giant challenge B.C. Major Midget Hockey League team will meet defending champions for 6th straight season BY

The Greater Vancouver Canadians managed to get a monkey of their backs last weekend. Now they are hoping to remove a gorilla. The Canadians advanced to the B.C. Major Midget Hockey League semi-finals by taking out the Vancouver Northeast Chiefs in three games. Now they face a huge challenge against the defending champion Vancouver Northwest Giants. This marks the sixth consecutive year the two teams have met in the post-season and amazingly the Giants have prevailed each time despite every series going the distance. The league powerhouse will be heavily favoured to continue the trend after taking three of four regular season meetings. The entire series will be played at the Burnaby Winter Club with game one taking place tonight. “There really is no pressure on us,” said first-year head coach Phil Alalouf whose roster features 10 1998-born players. “We have one of the youngest teams in the league and nobody thought we would finish in the top four this season never mind be in the semi-finals. We have to play with discipline and stick within our structure after doing some different things of late that worked for us last weekend.” The Canadians dropped a 5-2 decision to open their quarter-final series against the Chiefs — mark-

Spokane Chiefs’w prospect Alex Whitwham had a goal and six assists in the Greater Vancouver Canadians 9-2 game two playoff win over the Vancouver Northeast Chiefs last weekend. ing the fifth consecutive time they have lost to them this season. However, game two was a much different story as the hosts exploded for six goals in the opening period en route to a 9-2 victory at the Richmond Olympic Oval. The line of Dante Hannoun. Alex Whitwham and Kyle Uy combined
for 19 points. Hannoun led the way with four goals and two assists. Whitwham had a goal and six assists while Uy had a hat trick and three helpers. The deciding game was a much tighter affair with Ryan Wilkinson breaking a 2-2 tie in the final minute of the second period as Greater
Vancouver went on to a 5-2 victory. Hannoun completed his huge weekend with two more goals and one assist. Whitwham and Scott Munro also scored. Tyler Shugrue was terrific in net, highlighted by a penalty shot save in the third period with the game’s outcome still in doubt.
U16 Ladner United capture league cup Ladner United wrapped up another successful season by capturing its group in B.C. Coastal Girls Soccer League cup play. The joint Ladner/Tsawwassen U16 Silver rep team came through with a 3-2 win over the North Shore Dynamite in penalty kicks last Sunday. Ladner Celtic pulled away in the second half to defeat North Delta in the Delta Cup final.
Following an undefeated season, the boys saved their best for last — rolling to a 9-3 victory over North Delta to capture the Group “A” title last Saturday at Holly Park. Noah Thomas opened the scoring on a beautiful diving header. Other goals followed from Jordan Bach, Sean Weichers and Mathew Burt. North Delta was still within striking distance until Burt took over in the second half to complete his second hat trick of the match. Huge saves were made by Euan Aitchison and Jackson Lawton who shared the goalkeeping duties. The stops came at a critical time, early in the game, when the outcome could have gone either way. Coaches Paul Bach, Scott Neaves and Whitfield Crump said it was the boys most complete game of the season with everyone contributing to the win. The Celtic roster also features: Carter Torok, Liam Chong, Evan Neaves, Jason Crump and Sebastian Ortiz.
