Youngsters taking part in the Earthwise Society’s Junior Master Gardener Program this week made “seed bombs” (essentially seeds and dirt rolled into a round ball) and then tossed them into the grassland, where the seeds will grow. The week-long program featured many activities to make gardening fun.
The trial of the teen accused in the fatal Tsawwassen First Nation stabbing last year is set to start next Tuesday. The boy, who was 17 at the time and cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, stands charged with second degree murder and attempted murder after an attack that left one teen dead and another critically injured. Police were called to the 1700block of Tsawwassen Drive at around 10 p.m. on Feb. 15, 2013. Upon arrival, officers discovered two teenage girls lying on the ground suffering from stab wounds. Both were treated at the scene before being airlifted to hospital. The 16-year-old victim succumbed to her injuries while the 15-year-old girl was in critical condition. The boy was taken into custody later the next morning. The accused and the victims were known to each other.
Spring cleaning to clutter curbs
Annual Spring Clean-Up comes to South Delta next week, meaning big volumes for garbage collectors Spring has arrived and that means it’s time for Spring CleanUp. Curbs are sure to be cluttered in South Delta this weekend as residents take advantage of the opportunity to do some spring cleaning. Spring Clean-Up is an annual
program where the municipality waives normal garbage volume limits on curbside collection. This year’s clean-up days are Monday, March 31 in Tsawwassen and Tuesday, April 1 in Ladner. Residents are asked to not set out any items or materials for Spring Clean-Up any sooner than
the weekend prior to collection. There are a few restrictions, including the amount of garbage set out cannot exceed a pick-up truck load. Accepted items include furniture, most large appliances, scrap metal as well as miscellaneous household items that have been
bagged or bundled. Scrap metal will be picked up after the nonrecyclable items. There are a number of items not accepted for collection, including mattresses and box springs, light fixtures, tires, liquids of any type, home electronics, glass and more.
Many of the items not accepted during Spring Clean-Up are recyclable. For more information about recycling options, call 604RECYCLE (732-9253). For more information about Spring Clean-Up, visit www.delta. ca, call 604-946-3260 or email engineering@delta.ca.

A Tilbury company received a visit from international diplomats earlier this week. On Monday morning, Zodiac Hurricane Technologies, Inc. hosted French Ambassador Philippe Zeller and JeanChristophe Fleury, consul of France in Vancouver. The pair visited in recognition of a large contract the company was awarded to supply the French Navy Commandos with up to 20 of its ECUME RIB (rigid inflatable boat) vessels. So far, 15 boats have been ordered totaling about $9 million. “It’s a large and very important contract for us,” said president and general manager Jean-Jacques Arignon. Zodiac designs and manufactures RIBs for both military and professional organizations, such as police forces and the Canadian Coast Guard, as well as private yachts and adventure companies. The ECUME RIB is designed to serve as a multi-mission craft, allowing the commandos to use it in a variety of scenarios. The rigid hull combined with the inflatable collar allows the RIBs to maintain stability and operate in larger waves and rougher conditions, making it ideal for military and other rescue-type operations.

The French dignitaries paid a visit to the Ladner-based company on Monday in recognition of a large contract recently awarded to Zodiac to supply up to 20 vessels to the French Navy Commandos. Arignon said the company, which is the largest RIB manufacturer in Canada, ships vessels all over the world, including Italy, Brazil, France, the U.S., Poland, Russia and South Africa. Zodiac also supplies boats to organizations closer to home, including the Canadian Coast Guard, Vancouver police, RCMP, Canadian Special Forces,
Department of Fisheries and Oceans, and the Royal Canadian Navy. “We produce and ship everywhere in the world,” Arignon said. All the boats are built in Ladner and, once completed, each one is launched at the Captain’s Cove boat launch. Zodiac, which moved to Tilbury from Richmond in

Truckers reach deal with gov’t, port Negotiated agreement struck soon after province introduces back-to-work legislation BY
JESSICA KERR
jkerr@delta-optimist.com
The month-long work stoppage by container truckers came to an end this week as drivers reached an agreement with both levels of government and Port Metro Vancouver. With back-to-work legislation looming Wednesday, intense bargaining took place throughout the day with an agreement reached late in the afternoon. “We have been clear from the very beginning that negotiation is the only way to achieve labour peace,” said Jerry Dias, Unifor’s national president. “We were not going to
have a plan imposed on us. Respect for workers’ rights and good faith negotiation is what is in the best interest of workers and the broader public,” he said. “We were not going to be moved on this.” With the dispute dragging on with no end in sight, last week the B.C. government began drafting back-to-work legislation that would have forced 250 union drivers behind the wheel. As well, Port Metro Vancouver announced it would not renew licences for non-union truckers who continued to protest. Following the announcement, some drivers chose to return to the road, with the

port reporting an increase to 40 per cent of the usual truck traffic, the highest since the dispute began last month.
More than 1,000 nonunion truck drivers parked their rigs on Feb. 26. About 400 Unifor drivers joined them on March 10. However, all sides were able to come to an agreement this week that will see a number of changes made to address truckers’ concerns about low rates and long wait times at the port. Among other items, the agreement will see trip rates increased by 12 per cent over the 2006 rates within 30 days of truckers returning to work. Port Metro Vancouver agreed to rescind licence suspensions where no criminal charges have been laid and implement an
extended-hours pilot project by March 31. In addition to the agreement, federal mediator Vince Ready has been retained to meet with all parties, including Unifor and the United Truckers’ Association, which represents the non-union drivers, to review, finalize and act upon the agreement within 90 days. “This is an agreement that working truckers can be satisfied with,” said Paul Johal, Unifor-Vancouver Container Truckers Association president. “We were also in this position in 2005, so enforcement will be critical to keeping the ports open.”

A petition was delivered to MP Kerry-Lynne Findlay’s constituency office in Ladner Tuesday opposing the controversial Fair Elections Act. The MP for DeltaRichmond East didn’t receive the 80,000-plus signatures personally because she was in Ottawa, but local resident Edwin Hopkins dropped it off anyway, part of a campaign that saw the same petition delivered to over two dozen MPs’ offices across the country. Gathered by such groups as the Canadian Federation of Students and the Council of Canadians, the petition calls on the government to scrap the proposed bill, which is now in the House of Commons. The government introduced the bill citing a need to combat voter fraud and update campaign finance rules, but critics contend the changes are politically motivated, creating unnecessarily strict voter ID requirements that could prevent hundreds of thousands from voting in the next election. “The justification is to prevent alleged voter fraud,
whereas in reality, in more than 20 years there’s been no more than eight cases of such voter fraud,” said Hopkins. “So they want to take the vote away from 120,000 people because of eight cases.” Under the current rules, “vouching” for someone who does not have proper ID is permitted, allowing PHOTO BY GORD GOBLE that individual to Edwin Hopkins delivered a petition vote. Pretty girl Penny was surrendered to the shelter through no fault of her own. Her previous owner was worried about her own health as Penny loved to rub against her feet and cut her off for love and attention. Being an elderly lady, the fear of tripping, falling and hurting herself made her decide to bring Penny to the shelter for a more appropriate home. Penny is said to be a loyal, affectionate and easy-going gal that loves to play with little rubber balls and will chase them around the house. Penny is very good in the home and has no tendency to be destructive. She does not enjoy the attention of other cats but LOVES attention from people! An adult (or older kids) home all to herself would be ideal for this love bug!!

The K9 unit and police helicopter were called in to help in the search, but to no avail. “Residents were asked to stay in their houses or go back inside in order that Air 1 and the K9 unit could operate without mistaking the public for the suspect,” Swallow said. Officers continue to investigate the incident and have conducted a preliminary investigation of the stolen vehicle.
An alleged stabbing in Tsawwassen earlier this week has turned out to be a self-inflicted wound. Delta police were called to the 5500-block of 14th Avenue at around 10:30 p.m. Tuesday after reports that a 16-year-old boy had been stabbed in the stomach. Sgt. No signs of forced entry and complainant unsure if he had locked his vehicle. Garage door company contacted to change entry code. • March 17, 6:51 p.m., 1200-block of 56th Street: While the complainant was shopping another vehicle parked beside her vehicle and, when the driver exited his vehicle, his door caused approximately $500 damage to the paint of the complainant’s vehicle. The incident was witnessed by her friend who had remained in the parked vehicle. The suspect was belligerent to the complainant and left the area without the complainant obtaining information from the suspect. • March 18, 12:40 p.m., ferry causeway: Suspects entered the commercial vehicle compound sometime overnight by cutting a hole in the fence. Two utility trailers in the compound had the locks cut off and both trailers were entered. A large quantity of meat was stolen. Video surveillance will be examined in an attempt to identify the suspects. • March 19, 3:02 a.m., 1300-block of 56th Street: Police received a report of a break and enter in progress after the complainants heard glass breaking and observed a young male wearing a grey hoody leave the area on a bicycle. Police attended minutes later and found the front door of the shop smashed and items stolen. A suspect bike was located dumped nearby. Video surveillance requested and forensic exam to be completed in order to make possible identification of

MURPHY’S LAW The old joke about government striking a task force to ensure nothing happens on a particular file looks like it’s coming true on the Ladner waterfront. It was announced back in early 2009 that a committee would be formed to devise a concept to revitalize a stretch of Chisholm Street, a once-bustling area of Ladner Village that had largely become an afterthought in recent decades. There was much talk about the exciting opportunities that awaited, including giddiness over Delta having spent $2 million of port amenity funding to buy a couple of properties that could act as catalysts for redevelopment. Headway, or so it seemed, was made in the ensuing months, raising hopes that after decades of indifference, interspersed with several unsuccessful revitalization attempts, the waterfront would finally return to its former place of prominence. “That’s one of the criticisms, that when we’ve gone to the people of Ladner that have lived here for many years, they had a healthy dose of skepticism that this is going to come to fruition. I think that’s changing now that they’re seeing concrete implementation steps.” That was a quote from July of 2010 by former municipal councillor Heather King, who played an instrumental role in developing that initial vision. That’s not meant to be a knock on King, who continues to be active in the community after losing the 2011 mayoral race to incumbent Lois Jackson, but rather to highlight the ongoing struggle to transform that stretch of waterfront. It’s been more than five years since this latest revitalization effort began and there’s little, at least in a tangible way, to show for it after a once-promising partnership between Delta and a private developer to build a marketplace fell through. Next week there’s a public hearing to rezone those two civic-owned properties to allow for a much wider range of potential uses before they are put up for sale. The hope at this point is that with some supposedly developer-friendly policies in place it will entice private sector interests to invest. I remain skeptical whether such an approach will work, although it must be noted that Delta’s in a tough situation given what makes economic sense for developers isn’t necessarily in keeping with the sensibilities of many that live in or frequent the village. If this latest attempt doesn’t pan out I guess they could always go back to the drawing board. Maybe it’s time to strike another task force!

COMMUNITY COMMENT Back in the 1960s, our street was the equivalent of an Olympic-sized ice rink. There were only a handful of cars parked on the road so maneuvering the tennis ball from wing to wing through the neutral zone was a piece of cake during epic street hockey matches. As the years went on, the “ice surface” shrunk and the calls for approaching “CAR(s)” increased. The times they were a changin! Soon residents’ cars denied the opportunity to give a curb bounce pass to yourself and the game began to lose its appeal on my block. In consideration of our playing space, I recall my dad parked our family vehicle, a ‘64 Volkswagen Beetle, at the top of the street so we could have room to play our asphalt sports in front of our homes.
That was our only car for a family of five back then, and I have vivid memories of my brothers and I squashed in the back on trips to Whistler and the Sunshine Coast. Eventually the VW was sold as we were of good fortune to inherit a ‘62 Chevy Belair from “long gone Uncle John” as my dad called him. Family road trips were now conducted in luxury. You could stand up in the back and engage in a fist fight with any of your siblings in this beast. Still, it was the only family car for many years, even when there were three of us that needed cars. Since 1969, the number of vehicles per home has increased by 66 per cent. I think we all understand that using cars less is intrinsically a good thing. So how is it that we continue to pour billions in to highway infrastructure? Don’t get me wrong, I love the new South Fraser Perimeter Road and the convenience it affords me on what are for the most part single-occupancy trips. All you have to do is turn your head to notice the HOV lane is not as busy at it should be. So what’s going to be game changer to get people out of their cars to get to work?

In our region, improved transit is the most obvious answer but I think there are more options for forward thinking businesses and innovative governments. We have all heard of flextime and telecommuting and some of us may be enjoying the benefits this flexibility affords. In a study by BMO last year, it was noted that B.C. ranked second in the country behind Alberta with 26 per cent of businesses in our province offering some form of a telecommuting option. Nationally, 65 per cent of businesses reported that it had a positive impact and 58 per cent said it improved work quality. As mobile connectivity, network infrastructure and bandwidth continue to grow, and innovations in software applications increase, an opportunity may present itself for governments to provide incentives to business to offer flex and telecommuting opportunities to workers who may not have had the chance to work from home before. In this scenario, there may be a time in the not so distant future where we will see a decline in the number of automobiles and the number of single-occupant car trips. You can only hope.

Metro authority takes hit with court ruling on Langley plan
Editor: So did Langley Township end Southlands uncertainty? They plan to develop Green Zone land that’s also in the Agricultural Land Reserve. After receiving Agricultural Land Commission (ALC) blessing, they approved the project without Metro Vancouver’s (GVRD) permission. Metro Vancouver petitioned the court claiming the Green Zone couldn’t be developed without its permission. On March 12, a Superior Court judge ruled: “I do not agree with the GVRD and I dismiss the
petition.” The judge’s reasons include that if farmland development within a municipality lacks regional impact, municipal councillors should decide since they are responsible to electors while appointed regional board members are not. She refuses to accept that “1/50th of one per cent of the land in the reserve within Langley could undermine the objectives ...to protect the Green Zone.” Note that the Southlands development would occupy land equal to less than half of one per cent of Delta’s
ALR land. The ruling seems based both on scholarly study of B.C. laws and Langley case specifics. This may make its universal application troublesome. I’m not a lawyer but suspect that future Green Zone clarity demands Metro Vancouver either secure a reversal or surrender authority over municipal Green Zone development. Let’s hope Southlands development doesn’t become enmeshed in years of added uncertainties and delays. Ed Ries
Politicians, not public, should be the ones to find resolution to radio towers issue
Editor: As you are likely well aware, radio station KRPI is planning to transmit its AM signals from Point Roberts to its projected audience on the Lower Mainland of B.C. The issue here is the U.S. Federal Communications Commission was not advised of the population in Tsawwassen whom these radio waves would impact. The disruptions caused by the harmful blanketing interference adversely impact electronic equip-
ment such as radios, TVs, telephones, baby monitors, computers and more. These effects have been well documented in the town of Ferndale, Wash. and this documentation is readily available on the Internet. My understanding is these kinds of transmitters can legally be located only in locations where the population is sparse. Tsawwassen is not such a location. This situation demands a

diplomatic resolution. What have our elected representatives done to affect such a resolution? It is shameful that, yet again, citizens whose lives will be disrupted if these towers are constructed need to hold public meetings, collect money to defend ourselves, and lobby politicians and bureaucrats “to do the right thing.” Why don’t they just do the right thing because it is the right thing to do? Delta continues push on chronic offenders
Municipal officials meet with attorney general in effort to better deal with mental health and addiction issues BY
JESSICA KERR
jkerr@delta-optimist.com
After a recent meeting with B.C.’s attorney general, Delta is on board with the provincial government to lobby for a review of the current system of dealing with chronic offenders. Delta Mayor Lois Jackson, chief administrative officer George Harvie and Delta North MLA Scott Hamilton met last week with Minister of Justice and Attorney General Suzanne Anton to discuss strategies for addressing mental health issues, substance abuse and policing. In a report released earlier this year, police Chief Jim Cessford said the justice system is doing nothing to help deal with chronic offenders, many of whom are suffering from mental health and addiction issues. About 45 per cent of all calls Delta police officers respond to involve a person
with some kind of mental health issue. The department has made some changes over the last several years to address the growing problem. In 2008, it partnered with Delta Mental Health to establish the Community Health Intervention Program (CHIP), formalizing an already strong relationship between the two agencies and developing an outreach service that sees a dedicated police officer regularly liaise with a mental health staff member. Initially, CHIP was expected to deal with between 10 and 15 highrisk individuals a year. In 2008, the officer saw 685 files, a number that grew to more than 800 last year. Suicides and attempted suicides account for many of the calls and many of those making the attempts have mental health and/or addiction issues. Earlier this year,

the push for local solutions; that is exactly what Delta is doing,” Anton said. “At a provincial level, our government continues to support work in this area, most recently through our B.C. It calls for the province to develop a long-term strategy to help people suffering from mental health and addiction issues to prevent them from becoming chronic offenders. “In order to best address important issues such as mental health, policing and substance use, it’s critical that local communities show strong leadership in

DO YOU EXPERIENCE • Head aches • Neck and back ache • Itchy, red and burning eyes You may be suffering from Computer Vision Syndrome or CVS. It is estimated that 70% of people spend approximately 9 hours each day in front of a computer or other digital device. Optometrists recommend the 20-20-20 rule. Every 20 minutes, take a 20 second break, blink and focus on something 20 feet away. This will give your eyes a much needed break and reduce some of the CVS symptoms. Task specific lenses can also alleviate many of these problems and improve your visual experience. These lenses have a large reading and intermediate (computer) area. At Tsawwassen Optometry clinic, Doctors Joan Hansen, Giulia Devuono and Sara Kirby are committed to assisting you with your eye health and visual needs. Our staff would be happy to discuss the many visual options available.

New CARP chapter aiming to improve life for retirees BY
JESSICA KERR
jkerr@delta-optimist.com
There is a new group in town and they’re aiming to make a difference in the lives of local retirees. The recently established Richmond-Delta branch of CARP, a national, non-partisan, non-profit organization committed to “a new vision of aging,” is hoping to spread the word among locals over the age of 45. The group’s vision emphasizes engagement and a passion for living, for new experiences, for learning and for reinventing yourself. “I’m 76 and I’m more active now than I was before,” said Dr. Victor Pauls, a retired dentist and board chair for the
Richmond-Delta branch. “You need to stay active... We want to reach people.” Pauls said the organization aims to combat some of the biggest issues facing seniors — isolation, loneliness, depression and a low self image. “We want to say, we can do something about it,” he said. CARP (Canadian Association for Retired Persons) started in Toronto and now has eight chapters in B.C. The association’s mission is to enhance the quality of life for all Canadians as they age through advocacy, benefits and creating a community. The association lobbies for social change to benefit residents as they age through financial security

All Saints Anglican Church
First impressions On the first day of March this year, my Anglican family gathered at the convention centre to welcome our new bishop, Melissa Skelton. The excitement was palpable and the feeling in the enormous room was both warm and comforting, many of us exclaiming, “The Spirit of the Lord is here!” To be a bishop in the Anglican Church is a calling that many desire, but few are chosen. Our bishop is our “chief pastor” and guide as we move together in a system that includes meetings, called Synods, and fellowship communities under the bishop’s direction, called parishes. So, I watched with eagerness to see how our first meeting would progress and how Bishop Melissa would lead us. She stood at the door
greeting folk as they arrived for their first personal encounter with our bishop. She was prepared for all kinds of questions and willing to listen to whatever was shared. Our time together was not long, but we began with prayer, moved to sharing our journey, and then had a time of questions and answers. I came away from the day knowing that the spirit is at work in our bishop’s life, as it has been with previous bishops. All of this made me wonder what kind of a leader I am. Funny, Moses came to mind ... and I discovered his secret, and the secret of many who follow in his footsteps to lead God’s people to live with God. “And God said, I will be with you.”

Volunteer families are needed to raise MANY BRILLIANT MINDS guide dog puppies DECIDED MAKING THE SAFEST POSSIBLE CAR WAS A NO-BRAINER.
Ladner-based B.C. Guide Dogs and its sister charity, Autism Support Dogs, are looking for volunteer puppy raisers in Greater Vancouver. The puppies are training to become guide dogs for blind/visually-impaired individuals or autism support dogs for children with autism. Families would have a puppy in-training live with them from about seven to eight weeks of age to 14 to 18 months of age. Puppy raisers are an integral part of the training process as they help prepare the pups, through a supervised program, for advanced training by teaching them obedience and socialization skills. In order to be eligible to volunteer as puppy raisers, candidates must: • Live in Greater Vancouver. • Be at home during the day and willing to take the
puppy with them wherever they go. • Provide a dog-friendly home with secure outdoor space. • Be available for obedience classes (twice a month) and visits (once a month). • Have a vehicle. • Be available for event appearances. • Not have more than one pet dog at home or children under school age. • Follow B.C. Guide Dog Services_ guidelines for training and caring for the dog. The charity offers dedicated, ongoing support to volunteers and covers the cost of dog food, vet care and other basic necessities. For more information about the organization or about becoming a puppy raiser, contact Linda Thornton at linda.thornton@bcguidedog.com, call 1-877-940-4504 or visit www.bcguidedog.com.

Local couple updates Inside Passage guidebook BY

T
sawwassen’s Anne Vipond and William Kelly recently released the second edition of their Best Anchorages of the Inside Passage guidebook. One of the updates the husband and wife team, which has been cruising the Inside Passage for 30 years together, made for the new edition is the inclusion of Fitz Hugh Sound. “It’s a stunning area to go to, great beaches, great anchorages,” says Kelly. It’s probably the premier boating destination on the coast right now, he says, because of the wildlife, including humpback whales. “Every day you’ll see two or three humpbacks breeching or feeding.” The remote destination is north of Port Hardy. “You need a good stretch of time to get up there,” says Vipond. They first visited the area in the early 1990s on their way to Alaska. The area has hundreds of islands and several dozen beautiful anchorages, a press release for the book notes.
“Perhaps one of the most stunning is Fury Island which is surrounded by a beautiful white sand and shell beach with clear views out to the open Pacific Ocean,” the release states. Vipond and Kelly started out as freelance writers, submitting articles to Pacific Yachting and other boating magazines before getting into the book publishing business. One of their books, Alaska By Cruise Ship, has sold a quarter of a million copies, Kelly says. The first edition of Best Anchorages of the Inside Passage was released in 2006. The expanded second edition is described as “a comprehensive selection of boating destinations on the South and Central Coast of British Columbia” with some being well known while others are secluded getaways. The book covers over 250 anchorages, with tips on getting through the passes. The book, which has a retail price of $39.95, is available at local bookstores like Black Bond Books in Ladner, Kelly notes. Visit www.oceancruiseguides. com for more on Best Anchorages of the Inside Passage and other guides.

Ice Jam trio kicks off church’s new jazz services The Ice Jam trio will start off Benediction Lutheran Church’s new jazz services Sunday. The trio is comprised of Peter Weber (bass), David Morse (piano) and Christine Anton (vocals). “I think the musical component of the whole church life here is huge,” says Anton, who is also choir director at the Tsawwassen church. “We’re very proud of it. We would like to share it more with the larger community.” She says it could perhaps eventually transition into a jazz vespers series. “We’ll start with this and see how it goes and how
the congregation responds and then how the community responds,” says Anton, who’s enjoyed an extensive career in opera and musical theatre. The idea is for jazz services to be offered every month with a fifth Sunday. Upcoming dates are June 29, Aug. 31 and Nov. 30. Weber notes other musicians from the community could be invited to perform. He performed with the Kitchener/Waterloo Symphony Orchestra along with various dance bands and jazz groups in Ontario before moving to B.C. Weber says he and Morse started playing music
together in late 1990s while Anton joined them in 2003. Morse, who studied music at UBC, is a pianist and organist at Benediction Lutheran. The first jazz service will be Sunday at 10 a.m. at Benediction Lutheran Church, 5575-6th Ave., Tsawwassen. PHOTO BY GORD GOBLE

Houseboating on the Shuswap BY
MARGARET DEEFHOLTS Optimist contributor
As I stand on the deck of the Prairie Princess, a Waterways company luxury houseboat docked in Sicamous, on this mid-April day, Mara Lake is a swath of deep blue waters stippled with sunlight. We are about to cast off on a three-day cruise along one of B.C.’s most scenic getaways in the heart of the Shuswap. Shuswap Lake, like an untidily scrawled “H” on our map, borders the town of Salmon Arm in the south, and touches small resort communities such as Sicamous, Wild Rose Bay, Blind Bay and Chase in the course of its meandering shoreline. My travelling companions and I are greeted on board by our hosts: skipper Darren, and first mate, pilot and navigator Noah. A “Welcome Aboard” hamper stuffed with goodies sits on the kitchen counter and along-
side this, like a still-life painting, is a bowl spilling over with the Okanagan’s bounty — apples, peaches and strawberries. Our fridge, well stocked with provisions from DeMille’s Market in Salmon Arm, includes Okanagan’s liquid ambrosia — wines from local vintners. Our home away from home is impressive. The Genesis 60 houseboat (not the largest of Waterways fleet) has three cabins, two bathrooms, a kitchen that boasts a full range of modern appliances and a bright lounge flanked by large picture-book windows. Above the fireplace is an entertainment centre: CD/ DVD player and satellite flat screen TV. On the upper deck, we discover an eight-person hot tub, wet bar, TV and music consul and, pièce de résistance, a curly-tubed water slide. First up this afternoon is a tour of the prestigious (and challenging) Hyde Mountain golf course, one

of many golfing greens in the Shuswap area. Lunch on the deck of the Loggers Restaurant commands spectacular views of the lake, but the sun has disappeared and clouds gathering over the distant mountains look ominous. Back on the boat we
dock briefly at Sicamous where Bahama John, a gregarious six-foot-eight giant who owns a Southern-andBahamian fusion style restaurant in town, arrives on board with our first night’s dinner: spicy Bahamian beef ribs, jerk chicken and coconut-flavoured brown
rice. The rest of the afternoon is spent leisurely cruising north. We listen to Noah strumming his guitar, sip wine, nibble snacks and gaze at the passing scene. Salmon Arm Lake reveals its secrets: cottages half hidden among the evergreens, craggy cliffs rearing against scudding clouds, sheltered coves and narrow inlets. Later in the summer these waters will swarm with canoeists, sports fishermen, water-skiers and windsurfers; bikers and hikers will test the winding forest trails. For now the only activity is an osprey guarding its nest on top of a wooden piling and an eagle lazily riding the thermals. We tie-up at Hungry Cove to sip after-dinner wine and chat around a beach campfire. In mid-July the cove will echo to the sounds of rock music from moored houseboats and boozy beach parties in full swing. We wake up the next morning to fog and drizzle
and putter over to Salmon Arm dockside where Blue Canoe Bakery owners Al and Sandy Boucher deliver us a bagged lunch. Only fresh local ingredients make up their crisp salads and their nutty brown-bread cheese and ham sandwiches. Their pièce de résistance? Brownies covered in a rich chocolate, melt-inyour mouth icing. The Okanagan is renowned for its wineries and the Shuswap area boasts seven. Doug MacMillan of MJ Shuswap Wine Tours drives us to three family-run estate wineries where their wine listings wax lyrical. As a farewell meal we are invited to dine at Table 24 in Salmon Arm, an upscale restaurant where my braised lamb shank in a Merlot and cinnamon sauce is fit for royalty. Who could ask for anything more? Travel Writers’ Tales is an independent newspaper syndicate that offers professionally written travel articles.

Local author offering advice to young writers Ladner author and creator of the international Junior Authors Contests, Laura Michelle Thomas, will be at Black Bond Books in Ladner on Sunday, April 6 giving away encouragement, inspiration and gifts to any young writers who stop by. The local event kicks of a month of appearances at Black Bond Books and Chapters to promote Thomas’ new novel, Polly Wants to Be a Writer: The Junior Authors Guide to Writing and Getting Published. Aimed at showing aspiring young writers how to break into print, the novel stars Polly, a 15-year-old wannabe writer who comes face-to-face with her inner literary dragon. With the help of Ms. Patience Whitford, a character inspired by Thomas’ personal experience as a writing mentor, Polly struggles to finish a short story as
Laura Thomas she becomes entangled in a dangerous scheme that threatens the future of every writer on the planet. Thomas — who is also the publisher of jaBlog! an international e-zine for youth and organizer of the Junior Authors Writers Conferences which are being held in Richmond, B.C. and London, UK this year — said the book has been receiving high marks from young writers worldwide.
“I know how hard it is to get a toehold as a writer. The reviews tell me that Polly’s tale is doing what I wanted it to do: teach and inspire young writers through story.” Thomas added that writers and readers can expect more than just a book signing. Not only will her novel be on sale that day, she will also have goody bags for everyone who stops in to meet her and some special prizes for the writers on her “insider” mailing list. She will also be available for short consultations on writing projects and to answer general questions about writing and publishing. The Black Bond Books event takes place from 1 to 3 p.m. at Trenant Park Square. Bowling up for award Acclaimed author Tim Bowling, originally from Ladner and now living in Edmonton, is no stranger to book awards. His work has garnered numerous prizes and honours, including the Stephan G. Stephansson Award for poetry, the CAA Award for Poetry, the Petra Kenney International Poetry Prize and two Governor General’s Literary Award nominations. But it’s unusual to be short listed for the same award eight times in only 14 years. Last week Bowling was named a finalist for the 2014 Robert Kroetsch City of Edmonton Book Prize for his latest book, Selected Poems, the eighth time he has
been nominated for this particular award. With Selected Poems, Bowling has gathered together his finest work, a selection including poetry from his debut collection, Low Water Slack, to his 10th collection, Tenderman (2011). The collection is unabashedly musical, image-rich and ambitious; poems of childhood, family, death, and the pleasures and rigours of art lead into ever-deeper explorations of history, society and middle age, but the faith in the power of language to convey something essential about life remains consistent. The winner will be announced on April 28.

Let’s Talk about Homecare
by Lindsay Eldridge, Nurse Next Door Delta Owner Through the last five and a half years, we’ve come into our clients lives in one of two ways: a gradual introduction as both our client and their family realize and accept that a little help is needed for dayto-day living, or in the thick of a crisis. Crisis mode is much more common. What defines a “crisis” depends on the family – but the loss of driving ability, a sudden hospitalization, a terminal diagnosis, or spouse/family caregiver burnout are a few common examples. Our purpose is to keep seniors in their own home on their own terms – which means asking a lot of open ended questions to cooperatively develop the right care plan for you. If you’ve ever asked someone mid-crisis to make decisions about something that previously hadn’t been thought of or discussed in great detail, you’re familiar with that we see. Uncertainty, hesitance, and overwhelm bubble to the surface. Often, one strongly-willed family member steps in to make the decision for everyone.
Celebrate aging! Stay in the home you love with a little help from Nurse Next Door.
Did you know Nurse Next Door does so much more (than nursing)?
Delta – this is why we want everyone to start talking about Homecare. Early and often, check in with your family members on what their wishes are. These conversations are more comfortable introduce when everyone is ‘just chatting’, and before a senior feels they have to defend their independence. When we work with families who have discussed their wishes, it shows. They approach Homecare as the next stage in the plan and everyone is working together to create success. Who starts the conversation? We all can, seniors, children of seniors, and close friends alike. Here are some open ended questions that may work to begin a meaningful discussion about Homecare: “Remember that Nursing Home aunt June was in? What did you think of that place?” This is a great jumping off point. Often people have strong memories of visiting others in their golden years, especially if a facility was involved. “My neighbour just started having someone come in to do her cleaning and to drive her to appointments. Do you know anyone who has tried that out?” “When you bought this house, did you imagine what it would be like to live here in your 90’s?” You may be surprised to learn that mom or dad has known all along where they would install the wheelchair ramp if it was needed and which ground floor room they’ve got pegged for their bedroom when the time comes. “Do you kids worry about me living alone?” or “I don’t want you kids to have to be my caregivers” is a great way to open the conversation with your children and to acknowledge that help may be needed at some point and that you’re thinking about your wishes.

Delta Gymnastics members earned many medals and posted personal bests at the recent provincial championships in Kamloops.

Impressive showing for locals
Delta Gymnastics sent large contingent to provincial championships in Kamloops A large contingent of athletes from Delta Gymnastics turned in an impressive showing at the recent provincial championships in Kamloops. The annual meet brings together the best gymnasts in B.C. to compete for the title of provincial champion. “This is the competition that our gymnasts are aspiring to achieve their best,” explained Mike Hood, Delta Gymnastics’ men’s competitive program director. “For our national level gymnasts, it is a trial meet for Western Canadian Championships and first trials for National Championships. We are pleased that seven of our gymnasts qualified for Westerns and we hope two will make National Championships.” Leading the way was Ava Groves who captured the Provincial 2 Tyro title. “It is truly an amaz-
ing achievement to be the Provincial 2 Tyro champion. We’re so proud of Ava,” said Jennifer Dober, Delta’s women’s program co-ordinator. Groves was closely followed by teammate Anna Miletich, the bronze medalist with top 10 performances in all categories, including third place on vault. Maddie Woodward was fifth all-round. In the men’s competition, Cole Schallig, Que Bidewell, Caleb Richmond, Ryan Woodhead and Bradley Gulbranson have all earned spots on Team B.C. for next month’s Westerns in Regina. Schallig won all-round silver at the Elite 3 level with a gold on high bar, silver on pommel horse and parallel bars, and bronze on floor exercise and rings. Richmond and Bidewell competed at the Elite 4
level where Richmond was the Elite 4 all-round silver medalist, highlighted by gold on floor, rings, vault and high bar. Woodhead was fourth all-round with silver on parallel bars and high bar.
“This is the competition that our gymnasts are aspiring to achieve their best.”
Mike Hood
Gulbranson competed in the National Open category and his fourth all-round was not only good enough for Westerns but also to attend a second team trials for Nationals. He won bronze on pommel horse and vault. On the women’s side, Sophie Anderson’s strong performance in Provincial 5 has earned her a spot on
Team B.C. for Westerns, while Ella Rogers is an alternate. “Both have trained very hard this season, learning and perfecting many skills and now competing to a winning performance,” said Dober. Anderson won the bronze medal all-round, with a silver on vault, while Rogers was fifth with a silver on beam. Sierra Chang will also be heading to Regina thanks to a silver all-round in Provincial 4. She was second on beam and bars. Delta gymnasts earned many medals and posted personal bests at the meet. Emilie Webb had a strong performance in Provincial 4 Open and Jenna Anderson competed in Provincial 3 Novice (01), winning a bronze on vault. The bronze champion in Provincial 3 Novice (00)
was Sarah Chan, which included a gold on vault and bronze on uneven bars. Provincial 3 Tyro (02) had three Delta competitors; Calle Foreman won bronze all-round, while Rachel Pham was close behind in fourth. Teammate Rachel Benjamin’s powerful floor routine earned her sixth place. In Provincial 3 Tyro (03), Ella Crawford had another podium with silver allround. Teammates Natalie Anderson and Elyse Tilsely gave strong performances, including a bronze medal on vault for Anderson. Provincial 2 Argo (05 & 06) had Addie and Grace Crawford perform some personal bests with top 10 results in most events. Provincial 2 Argo (04) featured four competitors — Sophie Tranelis, Alisha Foster, Astarte Garnett and Sydney Blackwell.

Longtime coach, ref mentored hundreds Ladner’s George Pinter passes away at 55 George Pinter, a longtime local resident, coach, player and referee in both baseball and soccer, passed away last Monday. Pinter, 55, will forever be remembered in the sports community for his long career coaching baseball and soccer. He coached in Ladner Minor Baseball from 19922009 (a total of 47 teams) as all three of his sons played in all levels from T-ball to Midget. He also coached 11 soccer teams from 1993 through to the 2005 season. He became a referee and in 2003 he accepted the position as head referee for Ladner soccer and was appointed to the disciplinary board. Pinter not only coached but mentored hundreds of athletes throughout his years in the community. Over the last week, tributes on social media have extolled his accomplishments and regrets have been pouring in from hundreds who knew him. Although his list of accomplishments is long, that is not what Pinter will be remembered for. Hundreds of athletes in this community will remember him for his unending patience (doing the hokey pokey in t-ball as warmup), his focus (and “focus cream”), his gentleness and his awe inspiring belief that you can do anything you set

your mind to. The messages sent by his family and friends have all had the same thread, and that was the difference he made to so many lives. As one post said, there are many young men in this community who are better people for having been coached by Pinter. He was a coach, a mentor and a friend. He was always willing to lend an ear, a hand, or several hands, as he frequently volunteered his family for things. His dedication to everyone was unwavering, and his family was first and foremost in all that he did. His sons know without a doubt how much their father loved them and he always said that having the opportunity to be on the field with his boys was one of the greatest pleasures in
his life. During the spring, summer, fall and winter months, you would always find Pinter on a field in Ladner, clipboard in hand, coaching a practice (almost every day, sometimes two a day), at a game or playing. His love of the sport shone through in the pleasure he took on that field, rain or shine. His philosophy of play at all costs, not wins at all costs, developed players into well-rounded athletes and young adults. Many coaches measured their success on the field by how their teams played against his. Many coaches out there will tell you, “I learned much from George Pinter.” He also played baseball on a men’s team that included many of Ladner’s baseball coaches. In 2008, Ladner Minor Baseball recognized his contribution to baseball by naming him volunteer of the year. In 2009, his Midget AA All Star team won the provincial championships and represented B.C. in the Western Canada Baseball Championships, where they took the silver. Pinter and his team were inducted into Delta’s Sports Hall of Fame as Team of the Year. A celebration of life will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Cedar Park Church, 5300-44th Ave., Ladner.

Bhatia receives Friendship Award
Perry Bhatia is the 2014 recipient of South Delta Minor Hockey Association’s Linda Reynolds Friendship Award. The recognition is presented annually to a SDMHA Level 4 (ages eight and nine) player for his/her sportsmanship on and off the ice. The nominees are selected by their teammates. Reynolds was an active member of the SDMHA Parents’ Auxiliary until her sudden passing in 1993. To honour her dedication to hockey in South Delta, an award was set up by the auxiliary in her memory. Other finalists included Will Saleken, Kinley Deboer and Brady Stoilen. It is an honour to be considered for this award and all the nominees should be proud as it represents what youth sport is all about: having fun and creating lifelong friendships.
