Board spares cafeteria program

School trustees heed public outcry and dip further into reserves BY

SANDOR GYARMATI

The culinary arts program at Delta Secondary has been spared from the cutting board. The Delta school board agreed Tuesday to pass an amended budget, one that saves the cafeteria teaching program at the Ladner high school, much to the delight of a group of former and current students at the meeting. Lori Pilling, the teacher chef in charge of the program, told the Optimist she was elated and relieved. “I feel proud, so proud of our

students and our community for voicing their opinions and being advocates in the process,” she said. Faced with a $3.2 million deficit and considering a number of measures, the board had proposed eliminating the DSS program due to low enrollment. The move prompted a large contingent of teachers, current and former students, as well as other supporters from the community to show up at the board’s budget consultation meeting last week to plead for the program’s survival. Many said it’s been invaluable for their skills training toward a

career in the food services industry. Pilling also presented a petition with nearly 1,000 names. Trustee Donna Burke said Tuesday the consultation process works, noting the board aims to engage the community in building and maintaining a school system that reflects local priorities, values and expectations. A controversial new program for recycling packaging and printed paper doesn’t seem to make any sense, says MLA Vicki Huntington. Concerned about the impacts that could result from the Multi-Material B.C. (MMBC) program, which is set to begin next month, the independent from Delta South warns the new recycling regime will be extremely damaging to certain businesses, such as the newspaper industry, creating unnecessary costs and red tape. “It’s not making the kind of sense that it ought to make and it’s too costly, and it’s putting what’s otherwise a fairly efficient recycling industry out of business. I’m not satisfied this is a good piece of legislation.” In 2011, the provincial government changed environmental regulations to make manufacturers of packaging and printed paper products responsible for the lifecycle of their goods in what’s been dubbed extended producer responsibility. A deal was then reached with Ontario-based Multi Materials B.C., a not-forprofit agency, to oversee the industry-paid program. MMBC will take responsibility for the curbside collection and recycling of

Delta has opted out of the Multi-Material B.C. program, but certain businesses will feel the impacts.

printed paper and packaging, invoicing B.C. businesses to cover the costs. “It’s nice to think you’re going to live in a perfect world where the producer gets rid of all its packaging, but that’s just not going to happen,” said Huntington. “If you wanted to reduce packaging, then there’s certainly got to be easier, cheaper ways of targeting that issue.” According to the program, if a business supplies packaging or supplies printed paper to residents, that company is considered a “steward” and has a requirement to register with MMBC. Critics argue the program will result in higher costs

CAFETERIA from page 1 Trustees Nick Kanakos and Val Windsor both talked about the school district’s funding challenges, saying the dollars coming in from the province don’t match the reality of costs. Trustee Fabian Milat, who in previous years questioned the district’s administrative costs while enroll-

ment shrank, on Tuesday defended the district, noting Delta has one of the lowest administrative costs in the province. The district will now further dip into reserves. Trustee Dale Saip spoke at length about the district’s much-talked about reserve account, noting the board

for businesses that could be passed along to the consumer. Business groups, including the newspaper, recycling, agriculture and waste management sector, are urging the province not to proceed. The government has decided to grant an exemption for smaller businesses, a move applauded by the B.C. Chamber of Commerce, which noted a relatively small number of firms will now be impacted. However, business groups say smaller firms have good reasons to remain concerned. The Surrey Board of Trade recently stated it’s not supporting the new recy-

cling regime, despite the City of Surrey joining, noting certain sectors such as the printing and publishing industries face serious consequences. According to the board, there’s also increasing concern by small businesses about added costs. Delta Chamber of Commerce chair Orv Nickel told the Optimist the commercial sector here hasn’t raised concerns, perhaps due in part to the exemption for smaller businesses. “Locally, there seems to be no change in the status quo. For Delta, it’s really status quo for both residential and commercial, based on the decision Delta has made not to participate,” he

said. Cities had until last year to decide if they would join the program and accept payments from MMBC to essentially act as recycling contractors, responsible for delivering the recycled materials. In December, the Corporation of Delta announced it wouldn’t join the recycling plan for homeowners until the true costs are known and service levels can be assured. Concerned certain materials such as glass would be banned from the current blue box program, forcing Delta to become “garbage police” for MMBC, Mayor Lois Jackson told the Optimist she wonders how Metro Vancouver will enforce the program if cities and businesses refuse to participate.

at no time made cuts to the operating budget in order to boost reserves. Saip explained how the reserve account is built up, noting some of that has come in the form of top-up funding due to low enrollment in recent years, but that money isn’t guaranteed, as well as budgeted expenditures that have yet to occur. Board chair Laura Dixon

said the district has kept tight controls of its operations, resulting in stability and the ability to continue many services as long as possible. “While we have faced difficult decisions in the past that have garnered much attention, it has always been our task to determine the educational benefits of our decisions,” Dixon said.

“The culinary arts program at Delta Secondary school has all the attributes we look for in helping our students achieve their full potential.” Also saying the school board’s decision demonstrates that its consultation process works, trustee Simon Truelove said he was impressed with the presentations made to the board last week.

Delta police and the Delta school board are asking for the public’s help in identifying the people responsible for the fire at a North Delta school earlier this month. Residents living near Heath Traditional School on 72nd Avenue reported smoke and flames around 2:30 a.m. on Monday, April 14. The school was closed for several days as the fire was investigated and classrooms cleaned up. On Wednesday, Delta police and the school district released photos of some vandalism at the school that investigators believe to have occurred at the same time the fire was set. “The images are being released in the hopes that parents, teachers or friends may have observed these

Delta receives Leader In Sustainability Award for the third consecutive year

The Corporation of Delta was recently recognized with Call2Recycle’s Leader in Sustainability Award for 2013. Call2Recycle, B.C.’s product stewardship program for household battery and cell phone recycling, honours organizations that demonstrate the strongest commitment to sustainability through their consistent participation. “Thanks to the efforts of FILE PHOTO

Members of the Ladner Rotary Club have taken up the fight against invasive species.

Delta is devising strategy to tame invasive species Certain plants upset eco-system BY

JESSICA KERR

jkerr@delta-optimist.com

Civic politicians approved the development of an invasive plant strategy last week. Invasive plants are defined as any non-native plant species that has the potential to have a detrimental effect on people, animals or eco-systems. These plants can end up in an area by accident, or be introduced on purpose, but without its natural predators, invasive plant species have the ability to quickly take root and alter the natural functions of an ecosystem. Left alone, non-native plants can overtake an area, out-competing native plants for essential resources such as nutrients, sunlight and water. “Once an area becomes infested it can be very difficult to restore that area back to its original state so the key to controlling invasive plants is through early detection and rapid response,” said Mike Brotherston, Delta’s manager of climate action and environment. “Second to habitat loss, invasive species have been identified as the most significant threat to biodiversity.” Delta is home to a number of invasive plants,

including giant hogweed, English ivy and English cordgrass, also known as spartina angelica. The noxious weed is monitored by Delta staff and the B.C. Spartina Working Group, a consortium of conservation organizations and government agencies that includes the Ladner Rotary Club. It’s considered noxious because it is so pervasive and as it spreads it has the ability to take over native plants and smother natural eco-systems, such as the inter-tidal area in Boundary Bay. “In the last decade, there has been rapid growth and spread of new invasive plants in the Metro Vancouver region creating economic, environmental and human health threats,” Brotherston stated in his report. While Delta has some current management initiatives for a few known invasive plants, there is no framework for addressing new ones as they are discovered in the community. “A strategy that addresses other problem invasive plants and that implements early detection and rapid response would help prevent invasive plants from becoming a widespread problem in our community,” he said.

our residents and businesses, this is the third year in a row Delta has been recognized,” said Mayor Lois Jackson. “Since we joined Call2Recycle in 2011, we have received the Leader in Sustainability Award every year. We are committed to helping residents dispose of hazardous materials by offering convenient, free battery recycling drop-off locations at our facilities.” Joe Zenobio, executive

director of Call2Recycle Canada, said 2013 was an extraordinary year for battery recycling in Canada, marking the 17th consecutive year of increased collections. “More than five million kilograms of batteries were diverted from the landfill, and organizations like Delta are at the core of that achievement,” said Zenobio. Delta started collecting

household batteries prior to the introduction of the Call2Recycle provincial program. Since 2010, over 8,000 kilograms (over 17,000 pounds) of hazardous batteries and cell phones have been recycled from Delta facilities, including recreation centres, libraries, seniors’ centres and municipal hall. Police presence douses Beach Grove bonfire The purpose of the Crime Beat is to educate and inform the public about some of the property crime trends occurring in South Delta and other files of interest. If you see anything occurring that you believe to be suspicious, call 911 for in-progress crimes and emergencies or 604-9464411 for other assistance. The following are some of the calls the Delta police responded to in the previous week: Tsawwassen • April 18, 4:50 a.m., 900-block of 51st Street: Complainant heard a “clunk” sound at the south side of his home. After going outside and investigating, he observed police in the area and the interior light of his vehicle was on. Police revealed a suspect(s) gained entry to the vehicle by punching out the driver’s door lock cylinder and then went through papers in the

console, stealing change from the ashtray. A forensic examination of the vehicle was conducted and after canvassing the area, police found a possible video nearby that will be used to identify suspects. • April 18, 10:13 a.m.: Complainant phoned police to advise that an unknown suspect smashed the driver’s window of her car and stole a GPS and some loose change. • April 18, 3:20 p.m., 1200-block of 56th Street: Complainant reported that her vehicle had been keyed several times down the passenger side. There were no suspects or witnesses to the event. • April 18, 9:50 p.m., 17th Avenue and Braid Road: Complainant reported a group of about 50 youths screaming and yelling, “Lets go to the big bonfire.” Police located a small group and a bonfire

The bike is a black and white Trek 3500D mountain bike. • April 17, 5100-block of Ladner Trunk Road: Complainant contacted police to report that she lost her wallet in the parking lot of Save-On-Foods. to sit down, with or without police, and discuss the issues. They all agreed and wanted the issue resolved. • April 14, 3300-block of 53rd Street: Complainant observed two male youths playing with an electrical box on the Deltaport Way overpass. Police located the youths near the scene and when questioned, they both admitted to unplugging cameras that watch over the CN rail tracks. There was no damage to the box as it was left open. Youths’ parents were advised of the incident and that they could

yield any witnesses. • April 14, noon: Complainant and her mother reported the complainant’s friend was posting pictures of the complainant on Facebook, Instagram and Tumbler, claiming the pictures as her own. This has been an ongoing issue between the complainant and her friend in which both sides have posted pictures and claimed ownership of them without the other’s consent. All parties were advised

on the beach at Boundary Bay. The youths were cooperative, put out fire and left the area. Bylaw tickets of $150 can be issued for any unlawful open air burning. Ladner • April 14, 4 a.m., 5300block of Paton Drive: Complainant advised that sometime overnight a suspect(s) removed a GPS from the centre console of his insecure car parked in the driveway. Panda

CHOOSE YOUR OFFER!

A little bit about Panda: Miss Panda was originally adopted from the Shelter by a sweet elderly woman. Sadly a few years later, her owner passed away and none of the woman’s family could keep Panda so she was surrendered back to the shelter. Panda is a beautiful, confident girl who appreciates the “less is more” type of attention from people, though she is happy to rub against your leg and hop onto your lap for some pets when the mood suits her. She prefers affection on her own terms, so would not do well living in a home with children. Panda must not go to a home with dogs, as she gets very upset and defensive around them. She would thrive in a quiet, indoor only, adult only home, where she can snooze by a sunny window during the day and then curl up on the sofa next to her people at night, to watch “Dancing with the Stars”.

TED MURPHY

MURPHY’S LAW Something just doesn’t feel right. All the usual signs of spring are around us: the showers and flowers, the longer evenings that beckon us outdoors and the epic battle among bearded combatants otherwise known as the Stanley Cup playoffs. Yet this year those playoffs have taken on a different vibe for one painfully obvious reason: the hometown Canucks are on the sidelines while 16 other teams vie for hockey’s Holy Grail. This used to be the time when the entire province got amped up, when jerseys became permitted office attire and flags proudly flapped from car antennas. It was a time when empty seats at watering holes were as rare as an Alex Burrows goal, yet the bandwagon somehow always made room for one more. Playoff games became mandatory viewing, so much so that traffic was noticeably lighter during the evening rush. If you weren’t glued to the TV screen for three hours every other night, you were in the minority. Those were certainly the good ol’ days, but as John Tortorella reminded the faithful last week, it’s not 2011 anymore. Now almost three years removed from that heartbreaking loss in Game 7 of the finals to Boston, we’ve experienced a gradual fall from grace thanks to consecutive first round exits. However, this year is different. It’s one thing to go into the playoffs fueled more by optimism than reality, but it’s quite another to be without an invitation to the party altogether. The quest for the cup carries on, and as fans of the game many of us will log significant couch time between now and mid-June, but without that rooting interest it just won’t be the same. You might adopt another team based on your pool selections or because you have a soft spot for AV or any of the other former Canucks taking part in the playoffs, but I’m pretty sure no one will be wearing a Colorado Avalanche jersey to work or flying a Pittsburgh Penguins flag from their car. Instead of trash-talking the Los Angeles Kings or those hated Chicago Blackhawks, the discussion in these parts now revolves around whether Torts will survive to coach another season or if the farmhands down in Utica have developed sufficiently to crack the big team’s roster. It’s playoff time elsewhere yet we’re already talking about next year, which is a sad reflection on how far this team has fallen and what that has done to the vibe of an entire province. On the bright side, there’s now more time to walk the dog on those glorious spring evenings.

Pioneering McKees have left a legacy throughout Delta DOUG HUSBAND

COMMUNITY COMMENT While penning an article on the history of the East Delta Hall, it became clear the John McKee name was prominent in the development of the East Delta community. I then had the pleasure to spend some time with E.J. (Ted) Curtis, a third generation member of the McKee family. The McKee name is a high profile one in the Ladner area with the seniors complex named after the pioneering family. Reviewing Delta’s early history keeps me grounded, including reading memoirs of the family’s arrival in East Delta in 1875 from Ireland via San Francisco. John and Margaret McKee, with six children, purchased 840 acres in the “East Delta flats,” which provided an enormous challenge for anyone farming such salt waterlogged, riddled soil. At times the land was completely flooded for months on end. These stalwart, hard-working people constructed their own dikes

along with extensive ditching for drainage and gradually improved the soil quality. In those days, farmers wore rubber boots year round. Horses were fit with wooden shoes while working the fields to keep them from sinking into the mud, and were used to pull out oxen that had sunk to their knees ploughing a field. Progress was slow but the pioneers set down their roots in this reclaimed land. And I quote, “It was a task that would have broken the hearts and spirits of less hardy men.” The initial family home and acreage was in the vicinity of the St. Stephen’s United Church in East Delta. The church was built on land donated by John McKee in 1891. While continuing to farm with the aid of their four sons, John and Margaret McKee moved into their new home on Slough Road, now known as Arthur Drive, near Ladner Village. They named the house Rosetta after a school in Ireland. It was customary in those days to “name” homes of some significance. The house was built in 1895 for Thomas Kerr, a partner in Grant & Kerr sawmill. When the mill relocated to the Port Guichon area, the Kerrs moved and sold the home to McKee.

An example of fine Victoria era architecture and social status, it is now a designated heritage site. The house was acquired by the Corporation of Delta and is the focal point of the McKee House seniors complex. A third house built and occupied by David McKee, named Melodie Court on Arthur Drive, is now a care home. This house, which is also of architectural significance, had in its landscape a large, prominently displayed monkey tree, the sight of which could stop traffic to admire its uniqueness. The legacy of the McKee family is forever ingrained in the community fabric as benefactors of donated land for a church site and community centre. In addition to its generosity, the family through the generations was active in the church and community. John Sr. was a principled man who served many years as justice of the peace. Two sons, John and William, both served terms as reeve of Delta. The McKee name has been preserved thanks to Mrs. Ethel Mowat of Ladner’s O.A.P. organization 78. Through her leadership and determination, Rosetta, now McKee House, was turned over to senior citizens as a meeting place and activity centre. The rest is history. And a good night to you, Ted.

April 25, 2014 The Delta Optimist A9 Letters to the Editor

Railing against MP won’t solve radio towers issue Editor: The hot topic of late seems to be radio towers that have, apparently, been approved by an American government agency for installation in Point Roberts. In both Point Roberts and across the line in Tsawwassen, groups have been out in full force giving voice to their opposition to these towers; not so much the actual towers but the announced 50,000-watt transmission the radio station will send out into the ether from those towers to reach listeners that reside primarily in the Lower Mainland of B.C., principally Surrey. The issue seems to be that according to those opposed to the station’s transmissions, those transmissions will “splash” into Tsawwassen and Point Roberts and cause various degrees of interference to electrical apparatus, including radio and TV receivers. Opponents have taken

aim at this area’s member of Parliament and have called her to task for “not protecting the interests” of citizens. Short of getting a bloody big gun and threatening the American government agency’s senior bureaucrat, it appears little can be done other than to follow the accepted and agreed-upon protocols of one federal government dealing with another federal government. From comments given by our MP, that appears to be precisely what has transpired but unless the Americans are agreeable to revisit the radio station’s application, it appears there is little that can be done from this side of the border either by an MLA or MP. I note, too, that the door has not been closed on this matter and that from information provided via media, this area’s MP has not given up the fight for redress by the Americans. Oblique threats of political action serve no purpose than to

inflame the issue and create a straw man. For edification, I spent a career in the Royal Canadian Navy in communications and I know full well the output of 50,000 watts of power being transmitted into a specified area. I have both sympathy and an understanding of what the residents of Tsawwassen and Point Roberts are fighting for and against but feel strongly that threats achieve little other than to make the person[s] uttering the threats feel good. International agreements with respect to radio stations, their call signs and their power output are in place. It seems in this instance, either by happenstance or design, the population of Tsawwassen was left off the station’s application to the American agency. Railing against the local MP and issuing veiled threats seems to be counterproductive. Bob Orrick

MLA says not to be hard on trustees

Editor: Given it is Easter break, I have been able to attend the Delta school board’s public budget meetings and I must compliment the board and administration for the obviously difficult decisions that were made in reaching their final budget numbers. They have struggled with the many needs of the education system and, I think, have tried to make decisions that leave the classroom as untouched as possible. Not an easy job, to say the least. And not a job that makes everybody happy. The provincial government is draining every penny it can from an already bare cupboard. How long before the education system starts to collapse is

the big question. How long can school boards be forced to absorb significant cost increases for negotiated wage increases, hydro and new programs initiated by the ministry? These are cost increases that are beyond local control and which the province won’t fund. And while I understand provincial finances are also under pressure, the constant insinuations from the minister that boards have all the money they need and can easily find savings if they do things differently are insulting. Delta has responded with balanced budgets that have created hardship for students and families — witness the school bus cancellations. Not an easy

or popular choice. It has responded with unique and creative programming that brings in additional money. It responded to public input and managed to protect the funding for culinary arts. And while I am sure there are further savings that will likely have to be found, it is notable the Delta school district already has the second lowest administration costs in B.C. It is a time of financial discipline, not just for the school board but perhaps for all of us. Let’s not be too hard on our trustees, each of whom is trying to bring our children the best educational experience possible. Vicki Huntington MLA, Delta South

Budget hardly balanced when debt is skyrocketing Editor: I do not know about you, but what really is a balanced budget? Out of nowhere we are being bombarded by the Harper election machinery telling us the budget will be balanced in 2015 just in time for more election giveaways that will spill red ink all over the budget pages. No matter how DeltaRichmond East MP KerryLynne Findlay and the

Harper machine will spin it, doesn’t the $160-billion hole the Tories have dug for all Canadians play an important role? The Liberals under Paul Martin reduced the total federal debt for a savings of $30 billion in interest payments, left a $13 billion surplus and balanced the annual budget year after year. The overall debt was created largely by the

Mulroney government, but Harper has added more than any previous government, even more than Mulroney. This debt reduces the ability of the feds to fund programs into the future and adds to the horrendous bill our children and grandchildren will have to repay. If interest rates even start to rise a little, the whole ball of wax will go up in flames. Arthur David Serry

The Delta Seniors Planning Team received an overwhelmingly positive response from residents for its vision for Paterson Park. Late last month the team launched a series of three public forums aimed at exploring possible uses for the historic Ladner park.

There have been concerns around a shortage of both affordable rental and market properties for young families and downsizing seniors, so the planning team has put together a vision for the former harness racetrack at the entrance to Ladner. It envisions an inclusive community that includes many facets: a mix of owned and rental units, seniors housing, assisted living and full residential care, adult and child day care, as well as co-housing units and a designated residential dementia care centre. Committee member ML Burke said the team didn’t hear any negative feedback from the residents who attended the sessions. She said everyone who attended was interested in seeing something done on the site. The sessions, held over three consecutive Saturdays, tackled different aspects of the planning team’s vision — how to develop housing for mixed incomes and ages on leased land; how to better determine education, socialization and recreation opportunities for all ages; and how both market and subsidized rental units or

buildings can exist on the property. The team invited panelists from various sectors and organizations, such as the Fraser Health Authority, B.C. Housing and Terra Housing, a non-profit affordable housing society, as well a consultants to hear about the vision and offer ideas and feedback. Burke said most got excited about the proposal and said that while it is ambitious, encouraged the team to keep working. She said one panelist, Jim O’Dea from Terra Housing, said the vision reminds him of the Woodward’s project in Downtown Vancouver, which came together with many different partners and includes affordable and market housing as well as commercial. Burke said he suggested Paterson could be developed in a similar way on a smaller scale. She said the team would continue to work toward making its vision a reality through more research and follow up with panelists. Paterson Park is divided into two parcels, one owned by the Corporation of Delta and the other by Kwantlen Polytechnic University.

Everyday is Earth Day for Green Team South Delta Secondary students undertake projects and spread environmental message throughout the year BY

Earth Day goes all year for members of South Delta Secondary’s Green Team. Like other schools across the district, SDSS participated in a variety of activities Tuesday to commemorate Earth Day, including the Lights Out Canada Challenge that had students and staff turn off lights and keep them off. The Green Team also began planting various vegetables in pots that students will nurture and take home. The group, though, is constantly at work, hoping to educate other students about the benefits of thinking green The team, for example, collects recyclable bottles and cans throughout school, putting them in one of three sorting stations it purchased. A local collection depot comes by once a week to get the bottles and cans, money that goes toward green projects at the Tsawwassen high school. One of those is a water bottle refilling station,

concerns among young people, and greater involvement in initiatives, many for whatever reason choose not to get involved. That’s why the Green Team can be a good education tool, she said. Fellow team member Jasmine Crump, who’s in Grade 12, agreed, saying she PHOTO BY SANDOR GYARMATI originally Members of the SDSS Green Team include teacher Bobby McDowell (left), students Tu Anh, Malika Carper, teacher became Suzan Olsen and students Doyeon Kim and Jasmine Crump. interested which has a counter indicat- ever, is about more than just member Malika Carper said and joined ing it’s been used 121,000 projects around the school. the reason she joined was in Grade 11 because she times. It’s issues like that and you don’t have to look very far in your backyard for environmental issues. There’s a ton of stuff going on in Delta,” she said. Also on the team is teacher Bobby McDowell, who several years ago walked across Canada with a friend, filming a documentary of his remarkable journey. He agreed there are plenty of local issues students can focus on to make a difference.

Motorcycle show cancelled as recreation centre unavailable 29th edition of annual show falls victim to space crunch at civic facilities BY

DAVE WILLIS

dwillis@delta-optimist.com

The annual motorcycle show held at the South Delta Recreation Centre has been cancelled this year. The Classic & Vintage Motorcycle Swap Meet and Show ‘n Shine was to take place on Sunday. Organizer Todd Copan said on the advice of his lawyer he had no comment as to why the show was cancelled. The event’s website noted the cancellation was “due to circumstances beyond our control.” Copan said the show has enjoyed 28 years of hospitality in Tsawwassen and

ATTEND SOUTHLANDS PUBLIC HEARING THURSDAY, MAY 1

Metro Vancouver (GVRD) Staff Report* indicates Southlands Development Plan does not conform to the Regional Growth Strategy Will the Metro Directors listen? 1. “The real challenge for this development in terms of complete community objectives is location.” The Southlands is 1.3 kilometers away from the Town Centre... “Given the location of the development in relation to employment centres, major commercial centres and the lack of regular transit service, it is likely that most residents will need to use private vehicles for most trips off-site leading to greenhouse gas emissions implications.” 2. “There is capacity within the existing developed area of Tsawwassen to accommodate anticipated growth” 3. “…the Southlands development would potentially absorb some of the future growth that is projected to go into the existing Tsawwassen area, resulting in a more dispersed rather than compact growth model.” 4. The proposed flood construction level “...falls short of the best practices recommended by the Ministry of Environment ...there potentially will be future flooding impacts.” 5. “A new municipal road [through the site] will bisect several of the existing large parcels of agricultural land leading to further agricultural land fragmentation.” 6. “The B.C. Ministry of Agriculture has raised concerns about the economic viability of small-scale farming” and “that this development will negatively impact the nearby conventional farming.” 7. The Ministry of Agriculture has also expressed concerns about the loss of agricultural lands (46%) and interface problems between conventional farming and new residential development. 8. “Accepting this amendment… could, on a broader regional level, lead to greater speculation of agricultural land… undermining fundamental values inherent in the regional growth strategy.” * Metro Vancouver Planning, Policy and Environment Department report February 21, 2014 http://public.metrovancouver.org/planning/development/strategy/Pages/Amendments.aspx

n 1999 Rebecca Salton was in Grade 12 at Delta Secondary and played Frenchie for the school’s production of Grease. Now she’s a teacher at the Ladner high school and directing DSS’s latest edition of the popular musical. “I’m always of the opinion, go big or go home,” Salton says, adding the 15year mark felt like a good anniversary to revisit the play. “We picked the big-

gest musical you could do.” There are seven scenes, over 130 kids and at least 10 adults involved in the production. Groups taking part include the theatre company, theatre production, dance academy and band program. It brings back a lot of memories to be doing Grease again, says Salton, adding she wants to make her former drama instructor Janet Worrall, who she’s still in touch with, proud. “It makes me emotional to think of that moment of her sitting here and watch-

ing this.” The musical, which debuted in the early 1970s, follows a group of teenagers as they make their way through high school in the late 1950s. “At this point in 2014 it’s fun to visit a different era. I think it’s really fun to take a step into a different time and place,” says Salton. “It teaches us how different we are but it also reminds us how teenagers have not really changed, in a way.” The music is a memorable part of Grease and Summer Nights is probably

one of the most exciting and well-known songs, Salton says. We Go Together is really representative of the play as a whole, with friends going through high school together, through good times and bad, she adds. Those Magic Changes is one of her favourites and Greased Lightnin’ is a “big deal” too, she says. Grade 12 student Cheyanne Makelki portrays Sandy in the production. “I’ve been wanting to play Sandy since I was really little. It’s been my

dream,” she says. Grease has been her favourite movie for years, she says. Hector Orellana-Boucher, who plays Danny, is also a big fan of the 1978 film, which starred John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John. “I used to watch the movie all the time when I was a kid, and I still do, and I always wanted to be Danny Zuko,” he says. Salton says she loves how much of an impact theatre can have students and their overall lives. “Yes, we’re putting on a

show, we’re dancing, singing and acting,” she says. “But really what it’s about is building confidence, teaching them skills they’re going to use in their real lives, commitment, dedication, organization, time management.” DSS presents Grease at Genesis Theatre from April 30 to May 2 and from May 7 to 10 at 7 p.m. Tickets are on sale at the box office at lunch and after school. Call 604-940-0069. Tickets cost $15 for adults and $13 for students and seniors.

“I never had pain-free feet - UNTIL NOW!”

Pain Doctor Discovers Circulation-Boosting Material In ‘Miracle Socks’ for Diabetics and Foot Pain Sufferers! B r e a k t h r o u g h f i b e r s i m p r o v e b l o o d f l o w, s w e l l i n g , b o o s t o x y g e n f l o w, and eliminate foot fatigue - naturally in as little as 5 minutes!

If you suffer from poor circulation, injury, swelling or any condition that leaves your feet fatigued and sore, then read on to discover the breakthrough that can change your life. Good news comes in the form of a ‘pain-busting microfiber’ that is used to weave a circulation-boosting sock, called BambusaTM. Better Blood Flow The ‘miracle sock’ is made from a new, patented anion-technology that is weaved into every strand of thread used to make a BambusaTM sock. This special micro-fiber thread is made from revolutionary bamboo charcoal to stimulate blood flow and revitalize feet. When this material comes in contact with body-heat it is proven to release circulation-boosting ions. The 3D-weave technology used in the material has been compared to infrared light therapy to help revitalize stiff and sore muscles. The manufacturer, who also makes a back and wrist sleeve, says the material provides almost instant relief to any part of the body it touches, making it ideal for diabetics, athletes, inflammation, stiffness and swelling.

Darlena from NJ agrees, “You know you can put these on and feel good.” Doctor Recommended Pain specialist of 30 years, Dr. Ronald Jahner comments on the 3Dweave technology, “Infrared therapy has been used for years at medical clinics to treat vascular and circulatory conditions. Physical therapists use infrared therapy to speed recovery. Better blood flow equals less pain. This microfiber works much the same way.” Therapy Without A Prescription! When the socks were photographed using a thermographic imaging camera, results showed up to a 13% increase in blood flow. This helped to improve muscle oxygenation and decrease foot fatigue. The socks have been proven to provide extended relief from cold, swollen and fatigued feet. Relief for Tired, Swollen Feet BambusaTM socks are not a medical device or compression socks because they don’t restrict blood flow. Utilizing the special negative-anion technology, they comfortably increase blood flow and oxygen to tissues.

They are ideal for diabetics and those suffering from neuropathy or injury from repetitive use. BambusaTM socks can also bring comfort to tired legs within minutes of putting them on, energizing individuals who spend long hours on their feet.

IDEAL FOR: • Neuropathy • Raynaud's Syndrome • Cramping • Cold Feet

“While recovering from a broken ankle I wore my BambusaTM socks, and my doctor was amazed at how quickly the swelling went down!” Cathy K., PA.

BENEFITS: • Increased blood flow and oxygen • Reduced swelling and pain • Anti-microbial • Wicks away moisture • Increased range of motion

Goodbye to Pain and Numbness “I went out on the golf course for 18 holes, and when I got home my feet weren’t swollen, they weren’t sweating and my feet didn’t hurt!” Lou B., NY.

Tom from NJ reports, “I suffer from chronic foot cramps. My feet were sore for days after the cramping. My wife gave me the BambusaTM socks, I wore them, and the foot cramps stopped. I replaced all my socks with BambusaTM. My feet feel great now.”

The infrared anions generated by the charcoal bamboo increase blood flow and deliver oxygen to the tissues. After wearing for only minutes there is an increase in temperature due to the increased blood flow, resulting in improved comfort and reduced swelling. Twenty minutes after using the anion-fiber infused socks, patient has better blood flow and less numbness.

NEW PATIENTS & EMERGENCIES WELCOME

Rhodos flourish on West Coast anne marrison

Green Room Rhododendrons are the shrubs most likely to make gardeners happy in the Pacific Northwest because rhodos love our acidic soil, mild temperatures, large number of canopy trees and our (usually) high rainfall. Even better, the shallow roots of rhodos make them easy to transplant and weeds are reluctant to grow underneath them because the heavy, evergreen leaves block light. Then there are the spectacular flower clusters in spring. As well, it’s easy to find a rhododendron to suit your garden because there are over 1,000 species and innumerable cultivars. They’re popular with plant breeders because they hybridize very easily. Breeders also like rhododendrons that are easy to work with. These selections will root easily, resist diseases and flower early. Especially for people in smaller space, it’s important to choose varieties they love the look of now and that won’t annoy them later by excessive growth. Some rhododendrons can stretch far and wide as they get older. This means that pruning

may be necessary if they’re planted near a door or under a window. Hybrid rhodos with rough bark usually respond well to pruning. Smooth bark rhodos may have trouble — and both kinds are unlikely to flower on the new shoots for a few years. The dryness under roof overhangs and alkalinity from concrete foundations can also cause problems for rhododendrons. People with small spaces would do best with extremely compact rhododendrons. These include some nice purple-blues such as Blue Bird or Blue Diamond or the paler Ramapo. The small-leaf rhodos handle sun and moderate drying better than larger-leaf kinds. Largeleaf rhodos do best in fairly moist, dappled shade. Small-leaf rhodos tend to grow to about three feet (one metre) high in 10 years, according to nursery labels. These never mention subsequent height, but very old compact rhodos can be six feet (two metres) and more. Many rhododendrons never stop growing. Somewhat less compact but still small and shapely is the very popular PJM rhodo, which has bright pink flowers. PJM is densely branched, has leaves that are aromatic (when crushed) and turn a reddishbrown through winter. Another hugely loved and easily available rhodo fam-

ily is the Yakushimanums (Yaks). These have compactly branched rounded bushes that produce pink buds opening to pink or white flowers. These plants are very hardy and tolerant of harsh conditions. Rhodo ponticum isn’t as popular as it was before people discovered it can thrust up shoots from its roots. In Scotland and Ireland, it’s invaded many acres, but the purple-flowered R. ponticum with white-edged leaves is still sold. Another variegated leaf rhodo is President Roosevelt, which has red flowers and yellow-edged leaves. Some unusual rhodos include the early pale pink Christmas Cheer and the equally early R. mucronulatum, which opens pink flowers on deciduous branches. Hotei has beautiful butter-yellow flowers while R. augustifolium is varying shades of blue. Rhodos need to be planted in airy and acidic soil where bark and/or peat and compost have been added. Bark mulch is especially useful because it holds in moisture, adds acidity and helps to aerate the soil. It’s also very useful as a top dressing. Anne Marrison is happy to answer garden questions. Send them to her via amarrison@shaw.ca. It helps if you add the name of your city or region.

Annual Summer Rock Camp returns For kids who dream of being in a rock band, or those who just love to jam, there’s a summer camp in Ladner. Guitar Marty’s ninth annual Summer Rock Camp begins the third week of June and ends with a performance in November at the Ladner Community Centre, a show that has come to be a community event. Young guitar players, bassists, drummers, keyboard players and singers from the tween/teen set will be put together in the week-long camps with kids of similar abilities. The budding musicians will learn every-

thing from the mechanics of becoming a band and learning new songs together to choosing a band name and how to command a stage. Typically, each band will learn and practice a repertoire of three to five songs to perform on the final night. Registration is now open at guitarmarty. com. Videos from past Guitar Marty shows can be seen on YouTube at youtube.com/ guitarmarty. For additional details, email marty@guitarmarty.com.

Gulf Islands adventure BY

A

HANS TAMMEMAGI

Optimist contributor

s the Queen of Nanaimo chugged into Georgia Strait, the sun sparkled on the waves, fishing boats trolled the waters, a powerful tug pulled a barge on a long line and sailboats floated like butterflies. Soon we were in the Gulf Islands archipelago, a maze of more than 220 rocky masses ranging from small, deathly-dangerous-when-foggy reefs to large isles. Only Salt Spring, Pender, Mayne, Galiano and Saturna islands receive service from B.C. Ferries. At Galiano Island a few cars clunked off the ferry and a few thumped on. Gulls soared and black cormorants dried their outstretched wings on the mooring posts like preachers blessing their flock. We entered Active Pass and watched our ferry make sharp turns in the narrow, twisting channel that separates Galiano and Mayne islands. Fishing boats bobbed in the pass, seeking the herring and salmon that are attracted by the turbulent tidal currents. At Pender Island, my wife and I drove off the ferry. Day after sunny day followed, for the Gulf Islands lie in the rain shadow of the Olympic mountains and have a warm Mediterranean climate. Staying at a cabin for a week, we discovered the islands have three very different personalities: the sea, the forest and bucolic farmland.

SCAN WITH TO REVEAL PHOTOS

One of the Gulf Islands’ personalities is the primordial rain forest.

In the forest we felt tiny amongst the enormous Douglas firs and western cedars all standing ramrod straight. Surrounded by delicate ferns, sombre light, towering trees and bright green moss clinging to logs and rocks, it felt primordial. We walked close together expecting a raptor or other Mesozoic beast to suddenly burst through the foliage. One day we went kayaking to Portland Island, part of the Gulf Islands National Park Reserve, which sprawls over 15 islands and numerous islets. On the shore an oyster catcher and a long-legged blue

heron patrolled the beach for dinner. The tour leader found a large red crab hiding inside a soft moon-snail shell. Purple starfish were attached like glue to rocks. We passed sandstone cliffs sculpted by wind and sea into delicate lacework whorls of beige and yellow. A regal eagle sat high in a fir tree. Thirty seals basked on a small islet, their watery, large eyes nervously watching our progress. Our next exploration was to neighbouring Salt Spring Island, the largest and most populated of the islands and a Mecca for artists and authors. Ganges, the main town,

is full of artisan shops, cafes and restaurants serving fresh seafood. That afternoon we hiked a seaside trail and watched ferries float regally past; then we tippled at one of the three island wineries. The highlight was the Saturday market, which was abuzz with pottery, paintings, carvings, sculptures, stained glass and other products of the human mind and hand. To explore the nautical character of the islands, which offer some of the best boating in the world, we visited Poets Cove on south Pender Island. We watched the coming and going of sailboats with tall masts, gleaming yachts and roaring float planes. We walked the beach toward the lighthouse peering into tidal pools and admiring the artful necklaces of weathered driftwood logs that mark the high-tide line. Saturna, the smallest and most isolated of the main Gulf Islands, has winding roads, little nightlife and is a little paradise lost in a time warp. Sheep graze in tiny meadows and feral goats scamper on hillsides. The isle is achingly beautiful with numerous beach accesses and forest trails that often lead to beautiful secret glades or viewpoints. At day-end, my wife and I hiked to a viewpoint and as the islands turned a misty blue-grey, we raised our glasses to this delightful feast of islands. Elder wisdom As you read these words, I will be gathering with family members to remember and give thanks for the life of a dear aunt, who lived well for 91 years. Our gathering is called a “celebration of life” rather than a funeral, because “Ginny” lived life fully and with great gusto. When the service is over, we will bury her ashes next to her beloved “Stan” who died more than 15 years ago. What is happening to me is a startling revelation that I am becoming an elder, both in my immediate family and in my community. So, I realize, I must take on the mantle of leadership — I become an elder. One of the things I love about the Holy Week preceding Easter Day is that it is a time for the elders of our

community to tell our sacred stories. During this week, we use ancient words with which we, people of Christian faith, recount the mighty acts of God. We use words that tell of the power of God, words through which God’s love for us has echoed throughout history. We pass along to the next generation the ever-unfolding story of God seeking humans and reaching out to us in love. On Friday, I’m going to tell Ginny’s story, the story of one of God’s beloved children whom God welcomes home again. I’ll proclaim that Easter mystery, Christ has died, Christ is risen, and Christ will come again — and this is Good News for us all. Alleluia.

Lawn bowling season is underway in South Delta as both the Tsawwassen and Ladner clubs are out on the greens. The Tsawwassen Lawn Bowling Club (top) held an open house earlier this month to introduce prospective new members to the sport and will be holding its opening day, complete with ceremonial bowl by a member of Delta council, tomorrow. Delta South MLA Vicki Huntington (bottom) threw the first bowl, in perfect form, to begin the season at the Ladner Lawn Bowling Club on Sunday, April 13. Over 50 people attended opening day, enjoying each other’s company as well as the sunshine. Lessons for beginners are available now. Contact Barb Sutton at 604-940-8243.

Retirement Concepts Comfortable Assisted & Independent Senior Living

So nice to come home to. It’s peace of mind for you and your loved ones knowing that you are safe, not alone and enjoying the independence you’ve always had. Changing your address not your life, is what it’s all about.

Assisted Living — This is for seniors who need just a little bit more than Independent Living. Seniors in Assisted Living at retirement living communities are mobile and self directing, and are able to receive assistance with the activities of daily living, such as bathing, medication, reminders etc. This is ideal for couples, where both have different needs, because it allows them to remain together. In Assisted Living, we provide two meals per day, housekeeping, entertainment and activities. Because the accommodation is apartment-style, residents are able to set their own schedules and retain their independence for much longer. Independent Living — Designed for seniors who don't wish to remain home alone anymore and who prefer the lifestyle of retirement living communities, where they are no longer isolated. For the most part these seniors are still active in the community, enjoying outdoor pursuits, travelling, volunteering, and generally enjoying life. They like to have a nice suite where they can still do light cooking, but enjoy some meals in our dining room, have their housekeeping done for them, participate in light activities and entertainment, and have the security of staffed building with other residents with whom they can interact.

Former Sun Devil standout poised to be among the top selections in upcoming CFL collegiate draft BY

Dylan Ainsworth doesn’t have to worry about killing time waiting for the next biggest day of his promising football career. “Right now we are in the middle of exams which in itself is another ordeal,” said the social sciences student at Western University in London, ON. “It’s just going to be nice having the weight lifted off knowing where you are going and the real work starts there.” On May 13, the former South Delta Sun Devils standout will be among the top picks in the CFL draft. Ainsworth has seen his stock skyrocket over the past few months. The 6-foot-3 225-pound defensive end cracked the CFL Scouting Bureau rankings back in January at No. 15. He then turned in an

outstanding showing at last month’s CFL Combine in Toronto which vaulted him to No. 7 in the final rankings released Tuesday. Ainsworth stood out in the oneon-one drills as he demonstrated his power and explosiveness. He also finished third overall in the broad jump. He was coming off a strong 2013 campaign that saw him post 16 tackles, four sacks, and seven tackles for loss as part of a Mustangs defensive line that had three starters earn OUA all-star status. He is also the school’s single season sack record holder with 9.5 in 2012. “Seeing my name on the first couple of rankings was a big honour for me,” he said. “It was up to me to prove myself at the combine and that was a result of training hard with my teammate (and draft prospect) Beau Landry.

“I did as well as I really could have hoped. The tests went well and the one-on-ones went really well. To see my shoot up to the seventh spot is huge but the real rankings is on May 13 and that’s what I’m really excited about.” Ainsworth will be home for the draft proceedings and his family would like nothing more than to see his football career head back to the West Coast with the hometown B.C. Lions. As a top prospect, he was interviewed by all nine teams at the combine and has an open mind about playing anywhere. Typically, CFL draft picks must work their way up the depth chart by playing special teams, something that suits Ainsworth’s athleticism just fine. “Just to go in the first round would be awesome,” he added. “Realistically, any team that picks

me I will be happy to go there. Obviously, defensive line is more of a natural position for me and I have more passion for it. But whatever team comes knocking, it’s where I best fit and can contribute.” This time last year, Ainsworth turned in an outstanding performance at the annual East West Bowl, making four tackles, including three for a loss, and two sacks. He helped the Sun Devils win their first-ever provincial championship as a Grade 11 in 2008. He concluded his high school career by earning provincial all-star status, recording 10 sacks and 30 tackles. Ainsworth will become the first Sun Devil alumni to be selected since now retired offensive lineman Jesse Newman went third overall in the 2008 draft. Newman played just one season for South Delta after transferring from Powell River.

Junior Giants open spring season with tournament win

The South Delta-based 2004 AA Vancouver Junior Giants started off the spring hockey season with a bang by winning the Atom Minor division at the Mainland Cup Tournament in Coquitlam. Motivated by their “In it to win it” motto, the Giants rolled through the round-robin portion of the tournament undefeated with a 3-0-1 record against some of the best AA teams in the region. This placed them first in their pool and a date in the finals with a very strong and skilled AAA ’05 B.C. Bear squads. The Giants took it to their younger opponent in the first period with their tenacious forecheck resulting in a 2-0 lead. The Bears clawed back to tie it 2-2 on power play goals heading into the third. The final frame saw some great back and forth action as both teams pushed to score the decisive goal. With about

five minutes remaining, the Giants finally broke through with the tournament winning goal on a low slap shot by Jacob Bailie-Wolf. The locals held off the persistent Bears in the final minutes of the game with some great defensive play and stellar goaltending by Arjun Chahal. Congratulations to all the boys on a great weekend and tournament victory. The 2004 AA Jr. Giants also feature: Tyler Allan, Max Kidds-Brodie, Ryan Carleton, Layne Edge, Joel Epplette, Jackson Fowler, Tye Hemenway, Easton Kovacs, Logan Lechner, Caden Pacaud, Kalan Tasse and Dylan Van Poelgeest. The head coach is Phil Pacaud and his assistants include: Jon Tait and Wayne Carleton. Serving as team managers are Morgan Lechner and Sean Hemenway. The Junior Giants program director is Lawson Boutilier.

The 2004 Vancouver Junior Giants celebrate their victory at the Mainland Cup in Coquitlam.
