Teachers pull plug on field trips

Job action escalates at Delta schools as DTA tells its members not to participate to remove any uncertainty BY

SANDOR GYARMATI

sgyarmati@delta-optimist.com

Delta teachers are ramping up their job action by cancelling participation in field trips for the remainder of the school year. Delta Teachers’ Association president Paul Steer confirmed the move Wednesday. Teachers across the province launched the first phase of job action last week after 72-hour strike notice was issued to all public school districts. It meant teachers wouldn’t be going on a

full-scale strike and shutting down schools, but they are withdrawing from certain administrative duties. Teachers stopped meeting with administrators, won’t engage in written communications with administrators and will not undertake student supervision during non-instructional time. Steer told the Optimist Delta teachers had been participating in field trips, especially ones that had been planned well in advance of the initial job action. However, due to the possibility of escalating job action before the school year

Paul Steer DTA president

ends, teachers have been advised to no longer participate. He said the directive removes any uncertainty for students and parents in the event teachers move to the second phase of job action. A number of school districts, but not Delta, decided to cancel recess, a move the B.C. Teachers’ Federation claimed was unnecessary, saying staff are more than capable of supervising the playground for 15 minutes each day. Meantime, classroom teaching in the current phase is continuing as usual and report cards will con-

tinue to be issued. The BCTF said it began job action in response to disappointing progress at the negotiating table, where the government and employer’s association have not backed off from what it deems as unfair and unreasonable demands. Steer said teachers are frustrated that after a year of bargaining, government remains unwilling to acknowledge that classes across B.C. have never been larger or more challenging. Delta residents packed Metro Vancouver headquarters in Burnaby yesterday in a bid to express their views, yet again, on the contentious development proposal for the Southlands. Supporters and opponents jammed a public hearing hoping to convince regional directors the plan for the 214-hectare (537acre) Tsawwassen property is either innovate and positive or one that should be shelved because it fails to comply with the Regional Growth Strategy. Green T-shirt-clad supporters of the Century Group proposal arrived in Burnaby early, claiming most of the seats in the chamber and the initial slots on the speakers list. The crowd was so large many were forced to watch the proceedings on closed circuit TV. Brent Kelly, who is currently farming the land, was the first speaker and described major irrigation problems, including losing $75,000 due to heavy rain. “While the ducks and the geese are very happy swimming around and eating the potatoes, my banker is not,” Kelly said. “Please remember it’s not our responsibility to feed the public’s ducks and geese.” Southlands the Facts

spokesperson Richard Kunz was one of the few opponents to address the Metro board early on, warning directors that approving the application would unleash an unprecedented land grab by speculators and developers. Century Group is proposing to build 950 housing units on 20 per cent of the site, while 80 per cent would be given to Delta. Much of the land to go to the municipality would be used for farming, the

The latest plan has many opponents who made their feelings known at a fiveday municipal public hearing last fall, but it also has many supporters, making it an issue that has divided the community. The proposal received conditional approval from Delta council but Metro’s blessing is also required. Opponents warn of a dangerous precedent being

set if farmland is acquired in exchange for other agricultural land being paved over. Supporters insist the property has always been a challenge to farm and that the Century plan would

finally bring the land into production. If there were still speakers to be heard at the end of yesterday’s session, the hearing was scheduled to reconvene today at 1 p.m.

ing Delta public schools learn to read, write and get along well with others and to become active, involved members of the community. As a result, most are able to leave school ready for further education and training, or ready to enter the workforce as individuals trainable and ready to make a

positive difference wherever they go,” Steer added. The Delta district hasn’t confirmed the DTA decision means the cancellation of all field trips, but the district has cancelled an emergency release drill that had been scheduled for next week. When the B.C. Teachers’

Federation issued strike notice last week, provincial Education Minister Peter Fassbender said, “It’s a little disappointing but not at all surprising. Over the past few weeks, it appears the BCTF has been more focused on implementing its strike plan than bargaining at the table.”

Homeless count shows Delta lowest in region Overall total up five per cent from three years ago BY

JESSICA KERR

jkerr@delta-optimist.com

A group of Delta residents was among hundreds of volunteers who headed out in communities across the Lower Mainland recently with one simple goal in mind — determine how many homeless people are on the streets throughout the region. Barb Westlake, a volunteer co-ordinator for Delta, said it was a “very eye opening” experience. A total of 2,770 people in Metro Vancouver were identified as homeless during the March 12 count. That included 1,613 people who are considered “sheltered” homeless, which means they stay overnight in a shelter, transition or safe house, 200 people of no fixed address and 957 people living outside or staying temporarily with others (couch surfing). The homeless count is undertaken every three years and the 2014 totals mark a five per cent increase in the number of homeless in the region over 2011. Delta was grouped with White Rock for counting purposes and the two areas combined had 19 homeless people. “We knew there were more,” Westlake said. The volunteers are only able to count people who are willing to answer a questionnaire, so people are who are homeless but who do not want to answer the questions are not included in the total. Westlake also said that in some areas, the volunteers found evidence that someone was living there but could not find a person.

Volunteers Carey Muir and Anna Elias started out early on the day of the count. They were assigned to start at the South Delta Food Bank in Ladner. Elias said they arrived early and stood back and observed for a while before starting to talk to people. “The camaraderie with the group really stood out,” she said, adding people were genuinely looking out for each other. “That was really nice to see.” The pair was surprised, along with the food bank volunteers, to discover a man who no one knew was homeless. It turns out the man, a senior citizen, has been living in his car for the last several years. “That was disturbing, but he was very upbeat about it,” Muir said. “He just wanted to talk.” Elias said the man got to a point where he had to decide between maintaining his freedom and keeping his home. “He was smart, very intelligent, well spoken... but his circumstances... he had to choose freedom over comfort,” she said. “It just really opened

your eyes,” Elias said of the experience. “You start seeing things and it just really broadens your perspective.” The Delta/White Rock region has seen little change in the total number of homeless people since the count began in 2008. While the number has fluctuated over the years — from 12 in 2005 to 17 in 2008, 14 in 2011 and 19 this year — the area still has the lowest number of homeless people of all the communities included in the count. Back in 2010, Ladner United Church established an extreme weather shelter. Initially, the church was receiving funding for the shelter from B.C. Housing, however, that funding was cut in the fall of 2012 due to low occupancy numbers. At the time, the church decided to honour its commitment to maintain the shelter for at least three years. With the church closed for renovations this past winter, the shelter was also closed. Ladner United reopened last month and has a multipurpose room that could serve as a place for people to stay on a short-term basis.

Tickets were also given to the driver for using an electronic device and failing to display an “N” decal. The suspect was picked up by a family member. • April 25, 2:06 a.m., 5200-block of Ladner Trunk Road: A suspect gained access to the business by smashing the glass door. An unsuccessful attempt was made to access a locked cigarette cabinet. Pictures of the suspect were captured on the video.

Murderer appeals conviction The man convicted of killing four people, including a Ladner woman, has launched an appeal. Charles Kembo, a former Richmond resident, was convicted in 2010 of killing former girlfriend Sui Yin Ma, who lived in Ladner, as well as his exwife, Margaret Kembo, step-daughter Rita Yeung and former business partner Arden Samuel. They were killed separately between December 2002 and July 2005. The trial took more than eight months and was complicated by the fact one of the victims was never found. The nine-man, threewoman jury deliberated for three days before returning

a guilty verdict. Kembo was sentenced to life in prison with no eligibility for parole for 25 years. This week, Kembo, who was born in Malawi, Africa and came to Canada as a refugee in 1989, launched an appeal of his conviction. Lawyer Tom Arbogast told the B.C. Court of Appeal this week the jury was overwhelmed by complex evidence. He said drawing conclusions from the eight-month trial, which featured evidence from 154 witnesses and copious financial records, became a confusing exercise for the judge and jury. MLA questions provincial role in FSD coal proposal Delta South MLA Vicki Huntington is asking why a plan to make Metro Vancouver the western seaboard’s largest thermal coal gateway may go ahead without provincial involvement. “This government is standing by while Port Metro Vancouver proceeds with a review that excludes Metro Vancouver’s air quality restrictions, obstructs two chief medical health officers and refuses the requests of municipalities that want a say,” said Huntington. “It is up to the B.C. government to acknowledge that the provincial interest may be

at odds with Port Metro Vancouver’s desire to grease the wheels of Wyoming thermal coal trains.” The Fraser Surrey Docks proposed facility would be the western seaboard’s largest thermal coal exporter, handling up to eight million tonnes, or 340 trainloads, each year. The coal would be destined for Asia, and come from mines that previously served power plants that no longer burn coal, due to North American clean energy policies. “The issue here is whether thermal coal dust will impact human health, and it is beyond frustrating to hear government sidestep

the issue, and ignore calls for an independent health impact assessment,” said Huntington. In question period in the legislature yesterday, Huntington contrasted the Port Metro Vancouver project permit review process with reviews that have thwarted coal export proposals in the United States. “Successful referendums stopped Wyoming’s coal transiting through U.S. communities. State and civic leaders have taken public stands on the export of thermal coal,” she said. “And our government it won’t even talk to us about it.”

Sale of farmed salmon prompts public forum

Two residents are organizing a meeting next week with the aim of starting a campaign to stop the sale of farmed Atlantic salmon in local stores. Long-time Ladner fisherman John Stevens and social activist Bob Ages, who is part of the local chapter of the Council of Canadians, organized the meeting for next Wednesday after recently discovering that farmed Atlantic salmon

is being sold at both the Safeway and Save-on-Foods in Ladner. “This came as a shock to Mr. Ages and myself,” Stevens said. “When we canvassed local stores a year ago to see if any were selling farmed salmon, not one store or restaurant carried farmed salmon, as it was not popular at all in Ladner.” Stevens said the pair discovered the farmed salmon

on local store shelves last week. “It offends a lot of people in this community,” he said. A call to the Trenant Park Safeway confirmed that the store is currently selling farmed Atlantic salmon. Inquiries to Save-on-Foods were not answered by Optimist deadline. The public meeting is set for 7 p.m. on May 7 at Fisherman’s Co-op Hall in Ladner.

TED MURPHY

MURPHY’S LAW If you can just wait eight more years, your commute across the Fraser River will improve dramatically. OK, so that’s not exactly how Geoff Freer characterized the situation, but the project director for the George Massey Tunnel replacement did confirm last week that everything is on schedule to have a new bridge in place by 2022. Freer, who was one of the guest speakers at the Mayor’s Industrial Business Breakfast, offered a number of insights for the crowd at the Delta Town & Country Inn last Friday on both the recently-opened South Fraser Perimeter Road and the crossing that can’t come soon enough. What struck me as much as anything were his comments about the changes in traffic patterns in the region over the last decade. Freer admitted it was long thought that a new crossing of the south arm of the river would simply transfer the congestion and result in longer lineups for the Oak Street Bridge, but those close to the situation don’t believe that to be the case anymore. He said less than half the traffic that goes through the tunnel actually ends up in Vancouver, so while a new bridge would serve city-bound commuters, it would also accommodate a considerable volume that stays in the Richmond-DeltaSurrey corridor. Freer also said with the new bridge, which would be a cable-stayed span similar to the Alex Fraser, Ladner residents wouldn’t lose the River Road exit, which is reassuring because it initially looked like that exit ramp wouldn’t fit into the plans. The thought of having to follow the highway to Ladner Trunk Road, only to double back into the northern parts of town wasn’t terribly appealing to many, so maintaining that exit is welcomed. The new bridge is now in what’s called project definition mode, which means engineers are still in the process of determining what it will look like and consequently how much it will cost. Determining driver demand decades into the future is a bit of a crystal ball-gazing exercise, but Freer said they’re looking at both eight- and 10-lane configurations and it will definitely be built to accommodate light rail. All the design work is expected to take another three years, so construction isn’t scheduled to start until 2017. It will then be another five years, give or take, before the first vehicles traverse the shiny new bridge. Eight years is an eternity for those stuck in traffic on a regular basis, but for once there’s actually light at the end of the tunnel.

COMMUNITY COMMENT I want to raise a regional concern that seems to be a subject of some confusion. It is the risk and impact of an oil spill from either the Northern Gateway proposal for Kitimat, or the Kinder Morgan proposal for Vancouver. Both involve the transportation at sea of dil-bit or heavy crude oil. Both proclaim their proposals will use “world class” technology to avoid and clean up spills if/as they occur. This claim is meaningless, and is misleading. The Canadian Coast Guard, to whom the clean-up requirement will go, is not ready — it has no special boats, equipment, technology nor the manpower to do anything but to address a small spill in calm waters. Its budget is being trimmed significantly. Whether you listen to a Canadian naval officer, a Canadian risk assessment or a U.S. research

Forward thinking development is what Tsawwassen needs

Editor: I write to you as a lifelong resident of Tsawwassen. Our Delf family, all three generations, believes the Southlands development proposal is a positive move for Delta and its residents. Market Square will honour the rich agricultural history of Delta. An incredible 425 acres generously donated to the public will offer an increased capacity to produce healthy food close to home for our residents. This community farm, the largest in North America, will ensure everyone has access to healthy, culturally diverse and affordable foods. With 80 per cent of the

land generously being donated to the Corporation of Delta, a brilliant balance between development, usable trails and protected areas for flora and fauna results. This is unique and special and we believe this must be embraced and celebrated. The housing proposal will provide a sustainable option for retirees to move out of their large family homes, making room for young families to move in to Tsawwassen. It will also provide an option for young families entering the housing market. Young families are something towns need to be healthy and balanced. Young families will keep

our town vital and provide students for our wonderful schools. I am proud to live in a town where this incredible opportunity is being offered. This unique opportunity will provide additional allure for Tsawwassen and encourage our residents to make healthy and sustainable food and lifestyle choices. It is a forward thinking, self-sustaining, community-minded plan and it is exactly what Tsawwassen needs to see revitalization. I would like to see the plan approved and the development completed. Don’t let Delta’s ‘wisdom’ influence Metro board

Editor: Re: Do your part by protecting farmland, letter to the editor, April 23 Sixty per cent of South Delta property taxpayers have made it clear they’re opposed to the development of the Southlands. Delta council, in its wisdom, ignored the majority and sent the Century Group

proposal to the Metro Vancouver board for consideration. Now the director representing Delta on the Metro board will obviously again vote in favour of the Southlands development against our stated wishes. I believe our director should exclude herself from voting on the proposal; if she

Public’s railing has got MP vocal on radio towers issue

Editor: Re: Railing against MP won’t solve radio towers issue, letter to the editor, April 25 Is Bob Orrick on the payroll of Kerry-Lynne Findlay and/or James Moore? I can’t think of another reason to defend either of them. Listening to people who

are frustrated, angry and upset is part of their job and if they need defending, then they shouldn’t be doing it. In his letter he points out that it’s an issue for our federal government, so who does he suggest we rail at if not our representatives? I wrote to Findlay about this issue more than six months ago and she replied

Tunnel will be around for a while so improvements must not be delayed Editor: We hear almost daily of yet another accident in the George Massey Tunnel and have become accustomed to perceiving it as one more inconvenience in our busy day. However, as I mentioned in a previous letter, one only needs to search B.C. Supreme Court judgments to comprehend the true extent of the pain and misery inflicted on tunnel users. A man burned to death, a young mother in need of constant care for the rest of her life, traumatic brain injuries, broken limbs and destroyed lives... That doesn’t take into account the legal costs and damage to vehicles. This search will not include out-of-court settlements that are common in the majority of cases. Three years ago last

week, my wife, myself, a cab driver and two young women were involved in a serious accident involving three vehicles in the tunnel. I suffered a head injury and broken bones, my wife was badly shaken and we all had to experience the horrific potential of a fire while trapped in a tunnel under the Fraser River. Three vehicles were written off and I am still recovering from my injuries and the traumatic events. No, it is not just another inconvenience. Being involved in a collision in the tunnel can be a life-altering event for all involved. We will still be using this tunnel for some time so I once again propose the following: Paint the interior of the tunnel, illuminate it properly and install a fire suppression system. Mike McConnell

does vote for this proposal, I believe it would be a huge conflict of interest. Under the present B.C. Municipal Election Act, we in South Delta are not fairly represented when council goes against our wishes. Why would councillors from outside South Delta vote against our wishes? Ken McNames

with a factually incorrect letter and informed me there was nothing that she could do. It seems since then she’s had a bit of a change of heart and has at least tried to highlight the issue. I’m pretty sure she would have stayed quiet if it wasn’t for all our railing. P. Webb

Panda

A little bit about Panda: Miss Panda was originally adopted from the Shelter by a sweet elderly woman. Sadly a few years later, her owner passed away and none of the woman’s family could keep Panda so she was surrendered back to the shelter. Panda is a beautiful, confident girl who appreciates the “less is more” type of attention from people, though she is happy to rub against your leg and hop onto your lap for some pets when the mood suits her. She prefers affection on her own terms, so would not do well living in a home with children. Panda must not go to a home with dogs, as she gets very upset and defensive around them. She would thrive in a quiet, indoor only, adult only home, where she can snooze by a sunny window during the day and then curl up on the sofa next to her people at night, to watch “Dancing with the Stars”.

Next week marks Emergency Preparedness Week and residents are being encouraged to plan ahead. “Delta has a plan, has exercised it, and we’re challenging the community to make a plan and practice it,” said Michel Latendresse, deputy fire chief in charge of emergency management. “It’s a shared responsibility and we all need to chip in and do our share.” Residents are being encouraged to take three simple steps to become better prepared to face a range of emergencies — know the risks, make a plan and get an emergency kit. Latendresse said residents can assess any potential risks by simply becoming aware of their surroundings: Is your home close to the ocean or other waterways that could pose a flood risk, or are there power lines or large trees that could come down in the event of a major wind storm or earthquake? Knowing possible risks, and planning how to deal with them, can help in the event of an emergency. After assessing any risks, come up with a plan. Have a family plan, an evacuation plan and a communication plan. In the event of a major disaster, such as an earthquake, traditional phone lines could be down, or jammed with people trying to make calls.

Latendresse recommends using non-verbal channels of communication, such as text messaging, email or social media, from a cell phone, which use less bandwidth than making a phone call and are more likely to work when phone service is down or intermittent. If you only have access to a landline, local phone service may be limited following a disaster. Establish a family contact in a different region (outside the coastal areas of B.C. and the U.S.) to be the check-in person during an emergency. The third step is to build a kit to help get through the days following a disaster. Typically, it’s recommended to have enough food and water for every member of the family, including pets, to survive for 72 hours. Some items to include may be any needed prescription medications, a

spare pair of glasses, blankets and personal hygiene items, such as toilet paper, thermal blankets, matches, can opener, flashlight, rope and tarp. In the event of a largescale disaster, emergency services could be scarce as the most dire situations are dealt with first. Latendresse said people should be prepared to be self sufficient for 72 hours. The Corporation of Delta, in cooperation with the fire and police departments, has its own emergency response plan and put it into practice last month. Latendresse said police and fire, along with all the municipal departments, got together to simulate the response in the event of a 6.7 magnitude earthquake in the Strait of Georgia. “We had the concept on paper, now we needed to validate it,” he said. “We know in an incident like

VAPOR files lawsuit over jet fuel project on river Group claims a lack of consultation prior to approval BY

Opponents of a controversial plan to build a jet fuel storage tank farm on the Richmond side of the Fraser River aren’t giving up their fight. Members of Vancouver Airport Project Opposition for Richmond (VAPOR) recently filed a lawsuit in B.C. Supreme Court seeking to quash an environmental certificate issued for the project, citing a lack of adequate public consultation. Owned by a consortium of airlines that use YVR, the Vancouver Airport Fuel Facilities Corporation wants to ship jet fuel up the river to a tank farm that would be built on an industrial site on the south arm of the Fraser. An underground pipeline would then send the fuel to the airport. In December, the prov-

ince announced a conditional environmental assessment certificate would be issued. The decision was made after a review led by the B.C. Environmental Assessment Office, one of several parties named in the VAPOR lawsuit. Members of VAPOR, mostly Richmond residents but several from Delta, held a media event at Garry Point Park in Steveston Wednesday morning to reiterate their concerns. “As far as we’re concerned, we’ve been very open and transparent with everything we’ve stood for and we produce, but you can’t say that for the fuel consortium and the environmental review process,” said Otto Langer. “A lot was done behind closed doors. We never got to a public hearing. We never got the chance to talk to Environment Canada or Department of Fisheries

and Oceans, provincial Ministry of Environment staff. This has never happened in the past.” Tsawwassen’s James Ronback said the consultation process was fair and transparent in the late 1980s when a similar proposal was floated and rejected. He also said he was angered when he only recently found out a petition with thousands of names submitted over a year ago by Delta South MLA Vicki Huntington was rejected due to improper formatting. Port Metro Vancouver determined the project is not likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects with mitigation measures and conditions in place. Several dozen conditions were attached, including deployment of a protective boom across Ladner Reach during offloading of jet fuel at the marine terminal.

Mental health support is available close to home Mental Health Week is being celebrated May 5 to 11 BY

JESSICA KERR

jkerr@delta-optimist.com

May 5 to 11 is Mental Health Week in Canada and the Delta branch of the Canadian Mental Health Association wants residents to know they are there to help. “We’re part of one of the oldest non-profits in Canada,” said executive director Judy Gray, adding the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) has been around since 1918. Family members of people dealing with mental illness formed the Delta branch in the early 1990s. In the beginning, the branch offered a support group for families of people who had a mental illness. It was a peer-led group and from that, Gray said, the association became aware more education around mental health and illness was needed. “We try to stay on top of what’s going on in the community,” Gray said. The family support group continues today, but it has been joined by a myriad of other programs, including a regular depression/bi-polar support group and the only support group in the Lower Mainland for people with obsessive compulsive disorder. People come from all over Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley to attend the group’s sessions, said Alison Martin, one of the program facilitators. Many of the programs are aimed at youth and teens. The longest-standing education program is Headstrong: What the health is going on? That program has been ongoing since 1993 and is aimed

Variety recently presented a $15,000 cheque to the Delta branch of the Canadian Mental Health Association to support the expansion of Building Capacity in our Children, an art therapy program that nurtures the emotional health of children. Linda Flack (left) of Variety made the presentation to Judy Gray, Alison Martin and Liz McKenna. at educating Grade 10 students about mental health. “The big thing about that program is it is facilitated by young people,” Gray said. The association also offers a therapeutic arts program for children six to 12, Building Capacity in Our Children uses a creative arts process and relaxation/meditation to help kids develop their creativity, critical thinking and self-awareness. “Children at that age don’t always know how to verbalize what may be causing them distress,” she said. The program teaches kids how to build the capacity to “roll with the punches.” Other programs include Gardening and Gleaning for Mental Wellness, which gets participants into the garden to make a connection between healthy food and a healthy mind as well as distributing gleaned fruit and vegetables to those in need in the community. Living Life to the Full program is aimed at giving youth, teens and young adults life skills to help themselves.

“One of the things we really like to focus on here is wellness,” Gray said. The Delta branch has a few paid staff members but relies heavily on volunteers to keep the office running and to offer an ever-growing list of programs. “We have a really limited budget,” Gray said. “We put it all into the programs.” Last year, CMHA Delta volunteers put in 4,000 hours and the office dealt with almost 2,500 calls and visitors. The small yet cheerful office in Ladner is overflowing with resources for people looking for a little help. “We’re here to help people understand where they may go for help,” Gray said. Staff and volunteers are also taking part in this year’s Ride Don’t Hide event on June 22 at Swangard Stadium in Burnaby, which raises money to support women and their families. Ladner May Days set to celebrate heroes & villains

Watch out, Spider-Man. Wipe that smile of your face, Joker. Heroes & Villains is the theme of this year’s annual Ladner Pioneer May Days, set for May 23 to 25 in Memorial Park. “Everyone has a favourite hero or a favourite villain, so we thought the theme would really resonate with families,” says May Days committee chair Jackey Zellweger. The theme will figure prominently throughout the weekend, with a special nod to villainous pirates. The festivities begin on Friday evening with discounted midway rides for kids. Saturday is filled with a broad range of family entertainers and many free activities and entertainment for children. The Sunday activities kick off with a pancake breakfast followed at noon by the parade featuring the May Queen float. The parade route leads through the heart of historic Ladner Village and culminates at the stage in Memorial Park where the traditional May

Pole dance and May Queen crowning ceremony take place. The second longest running May Days in the province, the Ladner Pioneer May Days started in 1896. Still going strong today, between 10,000 and 12,000 people take in May Days every year. May Days wouldn’t be possible without the dedication of sponsors and volunteers. Businesses provide sponsorship and giftsin-kind while volunteers undertake all the planning and day-of logistics. It takes 29 volunteers alone just to manage traffic. “The sponsors and volunteers are really the heart of May Days, and what makes it a true community event,” says Zellweger. Anyone wishing to sponsor or volunteer at this year’s May Days should email sponsorship@ladnermaydays.com or volunteers@ladnermaydays.com, respectively. You can find out more about the event at www. ladnermaydays.com or by following May Days on Twitter @LadnerMayDays.

SDSS students present Split Second BY

DAVE WILLIS

dwillis@delta-optimist.com

South Delta Secondary students have artwork and photography on display at the Coast Tsawwassen Inn. The theme of the annual exhibit this time is “Split Second.” The idea was to steer the theme to something to do with time because it’s the school’s 40th anniversary, explains SDSS fine arts department head Julie Lymburner. Students from grades 10, 11 and 12 have their work on display. Students who talked to the Optimist earlier this week, Ming Liu, Willow Swanson, Jenn Alton, Sasha Ballon and Matthew Hill,

all received recognition for their work at the exhibit’s opening night. Liu created a charcoal pencil piece titled Eyes of Love; Alton used pencil to show a scene from the Lord of the Rings movies depicting Frodo saying goodbye to his friend Sam; Ballon did an oil painting of a frog titled Bounding; and Hill used the Northern Lights as an idea for his acrylic painting. Swanson originally took her photo for the school’s yearbook. She captured the image in the SDSS woodworking shop. “I just like the composition of it a lot,” she says. The show runs until May 20.

Dennett family helps hatchery South Delta Artists Guild member paints picture for fundraising effort BY

NOREEN M. FAIRWEATHER Optimist contributor

A chance remark by popular South Delta Artists Guild member Wynn Dennett to her son Patrick that she was looking for a new subject to paint has led to four generations of the Dennett family helping newly-hatched North Shore salmon safely reach the Pacific Ocean. It all began earlier this spring. Pat Dennett, now retired from a high-level career in B.C.’s construction industry, is a long-time volunteer with the Mossom Creek Hatchery. Mossom Creek rises from Buntzen Lake above Port Moody and runs through Anmore Village to empty into Burrard Inlet. As with many local streams, the fish it originally carried disappeared through disturbances caused by development and pollu-

®

tion. In the early 1970s, two high school biology teachers decided to try and reintroduce salmon to the creek. Ruth Foster and Rod MacVikar (now both retired but still active in the project) started the initiative that grew in size and enthusiasm, resulting in the construction of the Mossom Creek Hatchery in 1976. The salmon returned and it became a popular place to visit. In 1992, the nonprofit Burrard Inlet Marine Enhancement Society, with year-round help from existing and new volunteers, took on operation of the hatchery. However, disaster struck last December when a fire completely destroyed the facility. Hundreds of thousands of salmon eggs as well as all the society’s records and photographs vanished in flames. The site has been cleared

and plans made to rebuild the hatchery. Pat Dennett, a board member of the society, was appointed construction manager to help plan and build the new facility. He is also playing a large role in fundraising and had a natural answer to his artist mother’s question about what her next project might be. He invited her to paint the Mossom Creek Hatchery as it was originally, with her painting to be part of the fundraising effort towards the estimated replacement cost of $1.2 million. So Wynn Dennett, now in her 95th year, worked on the painting for several weeks in the guild’s studio/workshop, using an old colour photograph as a guide. She visited the hatchery in early April and gave the finished and framed painting to a delighted Foster.

A new songwriter’s café gets started tomorrow at St. David’s Anglican Church in Tsawwassen. There will be an open stage segment where participants can try out their tunes followed by a performance from a featured experienced songwriter. Ladner’s Allen des Noyers, who is organizing the event, says the idea is for a songwriter’s café to take place on the first Saturday of each month. In some ways it’s a chance to try out material, he notes. “It’s really about trying to make a connection with your audience and putting a song out there,” he says. des Noyers, who has been writing songs and musicals for over 30 years, will be the featured performer tomorrow. He has toured around Europe and the U.S. and has worked as

a producer as well. He says singer/songwriter Ross Douglas will be performing next month. The first songwriter’s café is set for Saturday, May 3 at 7 p.m. at St. David’s Anglican Church.

Performer registration is from 7 to 7:25 p.m. Performances start at 7:30 p.m. Admission is $10 but performers get in for free. Participants can play two or three songs depending on how many attend.

Three unconventional tips to better sleep p.j. wren

Well on Your Way When I was a teenager my father nicknamed me “mattress back.” It was his subtle way of letting me know I slept too much. Of course, being a teenager, I didn’t bat an eye at his sarcasm (I was far too cool for that), nor did I appreciate my ability to fall asleep and stay asleep. Fast-forward 30 years and how I crave to have a bit more of that mattress back teen in me again. Sleep provides amazing benefits to the body. It lowers stress and improves mood. It helps maintain and promote a healthy body weight, it improves our athletic performance and coordination, and it increases our ability to pay attention and remember new information. Researchers from the Université Laval released data in 2011 that revealed 40 per cent of Canadians suffer from a sleep disorder. That’s a lot of sleepy, cranky people gripping their Grande cups fairly tightly. So, how can you start sleeping more and main-lining your caffeine less? Get out of bed. I recently went to the UBC Sleep Disorder Clinic because my sleep is so bad. It was both educational and entertaining. It was educational because I learned some techniques that have helped

me, and entertaining because loving husband fell asleep in the waiting room when I was getting my assessment done. He, apparently, has no problems with sleep. After a 90-minute examination and assessment, my doctor (who looked liked he was suffering from his own specialty himself) diagnosed me with insomnia. To this I thought, “no kidding.” He then further identified I had “poor sleep hygiene.” Now, before you start thinking that I don’t shower or bath, sleep hygiene is a lot different than personal hygiene. Sleep hygiene is “all the behavioural and environmental factors that precede sleep and may interfere with sleep” (thank-you Wikipedia), and my sleep hygiene sucked. My first sleep hygiene sin was that I lie in bed until I eventually fall asleep and when I wake up in the middle of the night, I lie there again and wait for sleep to take me. It’s not like I was mulling on my problems while lying there, though. I thought I was doing the right thing by practicing deep breathing and meditation. I wasn’t. Experts do not recommend this. Instead, they recommend if we can’t fall asleep after 15 to 20 minutes to get out of bed and stay out of bed until we are sleepy again. The same goes if we wake up in the middle of the night. Get out of bed, do something that is not mentally stimulating, and when we are tired again go back

to bed. Lying there and trying to sleep, or willing ourselves to fall asleep, is counterproductive and the harder we try, the more elusive sleep will become. Decrease your sleep window. Another technique the UBC Sleep Clinic taught me is to decrease my sleep window, or how long I am in bed. I was of the opinion that if I went to bed early I would get a good night’s sleep. My sleep journal suggested otherwise. Going to bed when we’re not sleepy sends the wrong signal to our brain. It messes with our circadian rhythm (our internal timer that let’s us know when we should be awake and asleep), and this in turn makes it harder for us to fall asleep. Postponing bed and being awake longer will actually lead to a quicker, deeper and more solid sleep. Don’t worry, you aren’t decreasing your time sleeping. Instead, you are decreasing the amount of time awake in bed. Go to bed and get up at the same time everyday. No matter what day it is, keep your same sleep cycle. I now go to bed between 11 and 11:30 p.m. and wake up around 6:30 a.m. When I don’t follow this regime, I suffer sleeplessness. You need to keep your biological clock set and maintain that time — even on the weekends and when on holidays. Garden club hosts plant sale at hospital That perennial favourite of local gardeners, the Evergreen Garden Club’s annual plant sale, returns tomorrow. It will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the greenhouse and patio of the Mountain View Manor long-term care facility on the grounds of Delta Hospital. The spring event, a tradition in South Delta since the 1950s, expands its offerings of perennials, shrubs and tomatoes this year to include a garden market with vendors offering garden related goods. “We’ve asked local businesses and garden-related non-profits to join us this year as we look to develop

new ways to attract the community to the sale,” says club president Hilary Sanders about the event that donates 50 per cent of its proceeds to the Mountain View Manor garden and resident programs. Last year the event attracted over 400 people. Entrance to the market and sale is free. Double duty for Sun Devils coach Stephen Burns finds the time to guide top two ranked senior girls AAA soccer teams in province BY

MARK BOOTH

mbooth@delta-optimist.com

It’s a potential provincial high school girls soccer final that would provide a few challenges for Stephen Burns. The longtime coach of the highly successful South Delta Sun Devils has his team rolling again. The No. 2 ranked Tsawwassen school will head into next week’s Fraser Valley Championships as one of the favourites. The unique twist for Burns this season is he is also in charge of his hometown McMath Wildcats. The Steveston school is ranked No. 1 in the province with a perfect record in city play. The playoffs are up next. So what would happen if the teams meet at the provincials later this month in Vancouver? “I would be sitting right in the middle of the field,” smiled the longtime South Delta teacher. “I would just enjoy the game and watch both of them go.” The reason for Burns’ double duty is simple. His daughter Ali is in Grade 10 at McMath and the school is always looking for volunteer coaches. Burns also happens to guide her club Silver level team in Richmond and his popularity was evident in last week’s 2-1 win over McNair that featured players he coaches on both teams.

For the endless hours the former national team player has poured into coaching for well over two decades, the unique opportunity to be part of his daughter’s high school soccer experience only happens once. “With my daughter coming through, I approached (McMath athletic director) Rod (Jensen) a couple of years ago about doing this,” said Burns. “I know it’s kind of been a juggling act with getting coaches for all the teams and it would be nice for them to have some stability for the next three years. Now we will see what we can do with it.” The Wildcats feature plenty of B.C. Premier (HPL) and Metro level players who are soccer first athletes. Injuries have been a problem of late with four starters sidelined last week. Should this team by healthy and at the top of its game, Burns says the potential is there to win it all. “I didn’t really know how good this team was,” he said. “It’s a matter of putting it all together. They have all the pieces and the core of this team is very strong. “At the same time, it’s such a fine line in the playoffs. With Van Tech hosting provincials, only two teams will advance. Point Grey and Kitsilano are both good. Churchill made provincials last year and Lord Byng is going to be tough too.”

Longtime South Delta Sun Devils soccer coach Stephen Burns is also guiding the McMath Wildcats this season. His daughter Ali is a Grade 10 goalkeeper on the Steveston team. His Sun Devils are a mix of experience of youth a veteran backline and a trio of fleet footed Grade 10 forwards - Olivia Sheppard and twins Mia and Ava Simpson. “South Delta is probably the fastest team I have seen this year,” continued Burns. “They have a different type of mix and play a different style compared to McMath. I would say it’s not as attractive soccer but there is no answer to speed.” The juggling act has

worked to this point with South Delta’s league games on Monday and Wednesdays and the Wildcats typically playing Tuesday and Thursdays. Burns’ biggest challenge has been getting through the Massey tunnel on McMath game days. “I’m leaving Tsawwassen when the bell goes and basically getting there at kickoff.” The schedule will get trickier in the postseason when the teams play on consecutive days.

The Sun Devils should be one of the Valley tournament’s top seeds and potentially could be playing as far away as Coquitlam. Burns will be leaning on his longtime South Delta assistant Brent Sweeney when he is unavailable, while he is getting the help of a couple of Grade 12 students at McMath. “So far it hasn’t been much of an issue but it might be when the Valley playoffs start,” he said. “I will have to figure it out.”

Watson selected 28th overall by Lethbridge in WHL Bantam Draft Lethbridge Hurricanes continued their tradition of selecting South Delta defenceman in the Western Hockey League Bantam Draft. On Thursday, the Hurricanes used the 28th overall pick to take Ladner’s Nick Watson. He

becomes the fifth homegrown blueliner taken by Lethbridge in recent memory, joining Brandon Kennedy (2012), Phoenix Worth (2011), Macoy Erkamps (2010) and Brent Seabrook (2000). Watson grew up through South Delta Minor

Hockey’s rep system before moving over to the powerhouse Burnaby Winter Clubl South Delta Bantam A1 Storm forward Jacob Kennedy was selected 176th overall by the Kelowna Rockets.

Delta Deas Junior Rowers attended the prestigious 44th annual Brentwood Regatta last weekend. This regatta is the largest sporting event hosted by a single high school in North America. It featured 1,647 high school-age rowers from 37 schools and clubs, which included rowers from B.C., Washington and Oregon. Attending this regatta were 17 rowers from Delta Deas Rowing Club, along with coaches Garret BouhuyzenWenger and Kendra Pederson. They represented the club well by displaying excellent sportsmanship, achieving personal best times, winning

heats and placing in finals. The races were exhilarating with many close finishes. Delta took home medals in both the Junior A 1x ( silver for Robert Hodgins) and the Junior B 4+ ( gold for Natalie Whitehead, Trevor MacDougall, Ben Morton, Daniel Kruckenberg, and Alex Larocque). Earlier, the club’s juniors and masters got the season off to a fine start at sprint race regatta in Lake Stevens, WA. The juniors took a number of first and second place finishes, as well as a couple of third spots for a total of 13 ribbons. The masters continued with the success, garnering a top three finish in every race, earning 14 ribbons in total.

Conditions were difficult on the notoriously breezy lake. After a calm early morning start, it deteriorated both days with a stiff breeze in the afternoon which made it extremely challenging at the start. Despite the adverse weather, Delta rowers persevered and had excellent results. It is a fine start to the season. The juniors are gearing up for their own Scholastic Regatta, slated for May 24-25. Delta Deas Rowing Club is a community integrated club that has programs for juniors, masters, seniors and adaptive rowers. For information on upcoming learnto-row programs, contact Delta Deas Rowing Club at info@deltadeas.com

Ladner goaltender headed to Sweden after two seasons at Trinity Western University

Harry Fredeman is taking his hockey career overseas. Following a solid two-year stint with the Trinity Western University Spartans, the 22-year-old Ladner native has signed with IFK Ore, a Division 2 club based in Furudal. During his stint with the Langley school, Fredeman posted a 4.65 goals against average and a .883 save percentage in 32 games. This past season, the South Delta Minor Hockey Association product was named the BCIHL Goaltender of the Month for October after earning wins in all four of his starts and compiling a 1.15 goals-against average and a .966 save-percentage. He is part of an outstanding group of goalies to come through South Delta Minor Hockey rep system at the same time. The others were Sean Bonar (Princeton University), Luke Siemens (University of Alberta) and Cole Chreptyk who enjoyed a solid junior career. “This (playing professionally) has been the plan forever, really,” said Fredeman. “About halfway through this year, I decided I wanted to focus just on hockey and see where it takes me. “Trinity Western provides top-

Harry Fredeman class care for its athletes and getting to play in a rink like the Langley Events Centre was fantastic. It was a great experience and it prepared me for this next opportunity.” This past season, Fredeman played in 16 games, earning six wins and two shutouts. “I think this speaks to the player development both at Trinity Western

and within the BCIHL,” said Spartans coach Barret Kropf. “It shows the quality of our league and the calibre of players that are being produced at this level. “It also proves that playing collegiate hockey doesn’t have to be the end of the road. Our league is getting better and better and it can be a launching pad for players who are striving towards a professional hockey career.” Fredeman was part of a recordsetting TWU team this year that finished higher in the regular season standings and advanced further in the BCIHL playoffs than any previous Spartans side. After finishing third overall in the regular season standings, the Spartans earned an upset win over Simon Fraser in the first round of the playoffs, advancing to the championship series for the first time in program history. The Spartans settled for a silver medal after losing to Selkirk in the final. Prior to joining the Spartans, Fredeman played for three different clubs in the Pacific Junior Hockey League including his final season with the North Delta Devils.
