Complementary, not competition Representatives from development companies say TFN malls will draw from a much larger population base BY

As construction of the massive Tsawwassen First Nation shopping complex continues, representatives from the two companies behind the project assured local merchants the development would be complementary to existing businesses.

Representatives from Ivanhoe Cambridge and Property Development Group were at a

Ladner Business Association meeting last week to provide an update on the massive undertaking and answer questions from the local business community.

Ivanhoe Cambridge is behind Tsawwassen Mills, which will include approximately 1.2 million square feet of retail space with 16 anchor tenants. Property Development Group is building the adjacent Tsawwassen Commons, which will have 550,000 square feet of outdoor

retail space.

When asked what the malls will mean for local businesses, John Scott of Ivanhoe Cambridge said the company believes they will be complementary.

“We do a lot of market research before we come into a market,” he said, adding the company found that vacancy rates were reasonably low, which suggests a vibrant community.

Delta residents will continue to enjoy weekly garbage pickup for now, but changes could be on the horizon.

One of only five Lower Mainland communities to still have weekly collection, Delta hasn’t not followed the lead of cities like neighbouring Surrey, where trash is collected every second week using automated trash trucks.

Delta is home to the Vancouver Landfill, which means it receives royalties, while not having to pay to dump. Even with that advantageous financial position, the municipality will take a look at altering garbage collection next year after a review of 2014 figures, according to a recent engineering department report to Delta council.

The issue was discussed at an environmental advisory committee meeting a few months ago, where it was noted changing the garbage pick-up schedule “will not be considered in the immediate future and could be discussed when the garbage contracts are close to expiring.”

Delta will take another look at altering garbage collection schedules next year after a review of 2014 volumes. with Remple Disposal Ltd. doesn’t expire until January 2018, but Delta has the option to alter the schedule before that time.

If Delta were to go collection every other week with an automated system involving special trucks and mandatory new collection bins, rather than the standard garbage cans, that would require waiting

until the contract expires.

Moving to a less frequent schedule but maintaining manual collection could be done sooner than that, should the municipality decide to go that route, Lan said.

The engineering department report notes Delta’s Green Can program has been in place for almost two years and has had a

positive effect on diversion. Compared to 2011, when yard waste collection was provided every second week, Delta collected 35 per cent more green waste material (yard trimmings combined with food waste) and 10 per cent less garbage in 2013, the first full year of the program.

“This additional green waste material will have a

positive effect on Delta’s residential diversion rate which includes curbside collected materials as well as residential materials dropped off for recycling and composting,” the report notes.

The Green Can program has also had an impact on waste composition, according to the report, which noted a Metro Vancouver audit four years ago found samples of residential garbage in Delta contained 58 per cent compostable green waste (food waste, foodsoiled paper and yard trimmings material).

Audits last year found the percentage of green waste had decreased to 46 per cent of total residential garbage.

“While this decrease is a move in the right direction, additional work is still needed to increase participation. A summer student has been hired again to help promote the Green Can program throughout the summer,” the report states.

Metro Vancouver’s Solid Waste Management Plan commits to increasing regional waste diversion to 70 per cent by 2015.

A key component will be the implementation of an organics disposal ban across all sectors, which is to begin next year.

MALLS from page 1 In terms of competing with established businesses in Ladner and Tsawwassen, Scott said the style of shopping centre planned for the area usually attracts a much higher number of shoppers from outside the community.

“The one thing that we do know is that these shopping centres do draw from a much larger base,” he said.

For example, a typical mall draws most of its customers (87 per cent) from a 20-kilometre radius, while outlet-style shopping centres only draw about 65 per cent of customers from the same area.

Scott said the company is working with TransLink to improve transit service to the area, and bus stops have been planned along the access route to the shopping centre.

Tsawwassen Business Improvement Association president Randy Scott said he is not interested in a similar presentation until the developers are prepared

to offer more concrete information.

“What are they prepared to put back into the community?” he asked. “They haven’t offered us anything.”

Randy Scott said he would prefer to see representatives for the TFN malls sit down with the Delta business community to discuss how the massive development can benefit the area.

“They’ve got to start telling us about what they’re going to do for the community,” he said.

Typically, large-scale developments pay into an amenity package, money that can be used to upgrade parks and beautify the community.

“We’re not getting anything,” Randy Scott said.

As for the assertion that the Tsawwassen Mills and Tsawwassen Commons developments will complement, not compete with, local businesses, Randy Scott said money spent at

A lot of the money spent at local businesses stays in the community, as business owners and employees who live in the community spend the money earned at other local businesses, he said.

“That is what’s going to impact the community,” Randy Scott said.

Delta Chamber of Commerce executive director Ian Tait said his organization is planning a meeting with TFN, Ivanhoe Cambridge and Property Development Group later in

the year.

“Plans are underway to host an information session in the fall,” he said. “We look forward to bringing information to members and the community on all TFN developments.”

Earlier this year, Ivanhoe Cambridge announced that a Bass Pro Shops is planned for Tsawwassen Mills. The 145,000-square-foot recreational retail store will be the fourth in Canada and the first in B.C. At the same time, Property Development Group announced its first anchor tenants — a 108,000-square-foot Walmart as well as a

44,000-square-foot Rona.

Property Development Group representative David Coon told the LBA meeting that a third large tenant would be announced in two months.

Site preloading continues at Highway 17 and 52nd Street, with work on the Tsawwassen Mills’s foundation and superstructure scheduled to begin in mid2014. Work on both complexes is expected to continue throughout 2014 and 2015 with a grand opening planned for spring 2016.

The two developments are expected to create 6,500 construction jobs and, once completed, 4,200 retail jobs.

The following are some of the calls the Delta police responded to in the previous week: Ladner • April 29, 11:19 a.m., 4700-block of 57th Street: Complainant reported his entire car was keyed while parked in its usual spot.

Police attended and took pictures of the damage. No suspects or video available.

• April 29, 7:54 p.m., 44th Avenue and Arthur Drive: When the complainant disembarked from the bus, she found her purse was missing. The complainant contacted the bus company but nothing had been turned in. The purse, described as black suede with a blue fish clip, contained identification documents, credit and debit

cards, and Canadian currency.

• April 30, 7:46 a.m., 4600-block of Arthur Drive: Complainant reported his truck had been stolen from his residence sometime overnight. The truck was unlocked and did not have an anti-theft device. Surrey RCMP later located the truck in damaged condition.

• May 2, 9:16 a.m., 4600-block of Clarence Taylor Crescent: The hospice reported a shelter had been constructed at the back of the property. Police attended and found a shelter consisting of branches, plastic piping and rope leaning against the fence.

A single piece of paper weighed down with a large rock was in the centre of the shelter. The shelter was photographed and removed by police.

Tsawwassen • April 28, 8:26 a.m., 4800-block of 7A Avenue: Complainant reported that sometime overnight his car was rummaged through and his keys, which he believed

were left in the vehicle, were taken. Further investigation revealed the misplaced keys were located in the complainant’s residence.

It was determined that nothing of value was missing from the vehicle.

• May 1, 2:12 p.m., English Bluff: Complainant reported there is an ongoing dispute with the neighbours regarding the property lines and damage to the fence. Police advised the complainant to contact the Corporation of Delta and a surveyor to officially determine the property lines for future costs.

• May 2, 12:40 p.m., 1300-block of 53A Street: Police responded to a report from an anonymous caller that a suspicious person had entered the backyard.

Police spoke to a person in the residence who indicated she had not seen or heard anything suspicious. Police checked the backyard and located an unlocked sliding door in the basement but it did not appear that a break and enter had occurred.

Umiker house demolished after relocation too costly BY

Some Ladner residents were surprised this week when an old home they thought was being saved came down.

corner of Garry Street and 47A Avenue behind Ladner United Church was one of three homes demolished recently to make way for a townhouse development.

Last summer, civic politicians approved a 15-unit townhouse development on the parcel of land behind the church.

The Umiker house was not on the heritage registry, however, Yaworski and other residents lobbied council to have the home saved due to its historical significance to the community.

Built in 1940, it was home to Walter Umiker and his family. Umiker owned a garage and gas station, Ferry Service Garage, at the corner of 48th Avenue and Delta Street, which was later renamed Bishop Motors before being torn down in 1964 and replaced

by an apartment and commercial building.

Umiker was an active member of the Delta Board of Trade and an early member of the Ladner Businessmen’s Association.

Given the concerns, the development company agreed to attempt to preserve the house.

Steve Knoblauch, owner of RAM Construction, which now owns the site, said although a local citizen agreed to buy it for one dollar, that person backed out when they found out it would cost $30,000 to move the home just three blocks away.

Knoblauch said a lot of people stepped up to save the home, but moving it didn’t make sense economically.

Delta South MLA Vicki Huntington put her democratic reform agenda to the test in the legislature last week, proposing a legislative amendment to ban corporate and union donations from B.C.’s local elections.

The amendment was defeated 42 to 28.

Huntington said the lack of restrictions for B.C. election donations contributes to voter cynicism.

“There is a public perception out there that money is talking and that democracy in this province is increasingly bankrolled by special interests,” she said.

“It is a conviction among the public that undermines the legitimacy of our democracy and our trusts in the institutions of democracy.”

Huntington’s amendment would have changed a section of Bill 20, the Local Elections Campaign Financing Act, a piece of legislation that, if passed, will place restrictions on third party advertisements

and anonymous donations, while allowing unlimited corporate and union donations to continue.

The independent MLA said B.C.’s attitude to financing local elections is one of the most permissive in Canada.

“B.C. needs to get with the times, and catch up to provinces like Ontario and Manitoba, which already limit donations to individual voters.”

Responding to Huntington’s amendment, Minister of Community, Sport and Cultural Development Coralee Oakes noted she might consider setting spending or donation caps in the future, but she disagreed with banning corporation and union donations, stating those “organizations have a legitimate role.”

Huntington introduced a bill last year to outlaw provincial-level political donations from corporations, unions and out-of-province entities, part of her ongoing democratic reform agenda.

MURPHY’S LAW Do you get the sense this particular shield isn’t working quite as well anymore?

The provincial government has done a masterful job of creating entities to manage several of the biggest ticket items in its purview. There are health authorities to oversee our medical system, the Gateway Program and TransLink to handle transportation and local school boards when it comes to education.

Not only do these organizations manage the day-to-day operations, they also help insulate Victoria from public unrest should services rendered not meet taxpayer expectations, which, in the current economic climate, is happening more and more often.

It’s not the provincial government making that unpopular decision, it’s the Fraser Health Authority or the Delta school board. It’s a rather ingenious way of passing the buck, or the blame, so others can deal with the fallout.

However, if the school board’s recent budget consultation process is any indication, at least one of these shields is wearing thin, so much so that pretty much everyone can see right through it.

Faced with a budget shortfall in excess of $3 million, local school trustees were put in the unenviable position of having to make cuts yet again. This generated much angst within the system, particularly over the Delta Secondary cafeteria program that was ultimately spared.

During this process there was increased recognition of the no-win situation trustees find themselves in thanks to mounting costs, items like increased salaries and benefits as well as higher utility charges, they not only don’t control but can’t adequately fund.

The chair of the district parent advisory council said impassioned comments at a public budget meeting were aimed at the wrong level of government, pointing the finger directly at Victoria for the budget shortfall.

MLA Vicki Huntington urged constituents not to be too hard on trustees, saying they’re only given so much money to work with and are doing their best to make decisions that spare the classroom.

It seems school board members are morphing from cold-hearted program choppers to sympathetic figures deserving of our compassion and support, not our ridicule. A growing awareness of how the education system is funded and administered has led to an understanding that trustees aren’t magicians and can only stretch a loonie so far.

That doesn’t mean it will be smooth sailing, but at least the ones behind the shield will get hit too.

‘Revolution’ enlightening kids when it comes to their food MIKE SCHNEIDER

COMMUNITY COMMENT My school chum Rob gave away his orange in the lunch room every day from Grade 4 to Grade 12. After we all found a place to sit in the cafeteria (mostly lunch room), he would hold the orange up, ceremoniously, like some sort of auctioneer, and ask: “Who wants my orange?”

Kids with hands in the air would be at the ready if they were chosen. The toss of the fruit would go across the table or to a pal close by. If there were no teachers or monitors in sight, the orange would be tossed to the far end of the cafeteria with deft accuracy, although sometimes the receivers were not as co-ordinated as Rob. These “long bombs” were a fantastic form of lunchtime entertainment.

I never took him up on his daily offering as I usually had my own piece of fruit to contend with.

I take it that Rob did not like and may still not like oranges. I feel sorry for Rob’s mom who packed his lunch for all those years thinking how wonderful it was that her son ate a balanced lunch every day. She spent a couple of grand on fruit for the kid when she could have bought several pairs of shoes.

The Canada Food Guide advises that kids have at least six servings of fruit and vegetables daily.

Most parents do their best to try to achieve these nutritional goals but can only hope the Robs and Rhondas out there are actually eating what has been packed in their lunches.

As depressing as it is, I am sure most of us know that childhood obesity and type 2 diabetes are increasing amongst our youth at an alarming rate. There is much speculation as to why. Some of the facts out there are astounding.

The Jamie Oliver Foundation notes that children in the education system in the United States receive only 3.4 hours a year in educational time devoted to nutrition and food.

Twenty per cent of kids in Australia think that pasta comes form animals. Ninety-six per cent of kids in the UK do not get their five to six servings of fresh fruit and veg-

A few years ago the Jamie Oliver Foundation came up with the idea of Food Revolution Day as a day of change and enlightenment for children so they can better understand how to grow, cook and eat their own food. Let your kids cook May 16.

Next week will see the Delta school district participating in its third Food Revolution Day and week. Some schools will be harvesting first spring crops and preparing salads for lunch from these veggies they have planted and tended on their own school neighbourhood farms. Others will be seeding secondary crops and students will be planting 1,000 pickling cucumber seeds as a part of Project Pickle.

The seed trays for these plants will be lovingly cared for until mid-June when the seedlings will make it in to the ground.

Kids in Delta are getting more than 3.4 hours a year in education about food. The district and its partners are working on building positive statistics in Delta.

New bridge not welcome Editor: I was interested to read that Mayor Lois Jackson was actively courting the provincial government for a new bridge and that the province is actively pursuing the construction design phase.

Jackson is, I believe, the only mayor in Metro Vancouver who supports this bridge and the dismantling of the George Massey Tunnel. The provincial government would have us believe this is not only the best option, it is the popular one, that the bridge was the choice that came from public input.

What has been lost in this debate is the fact Port Metro Vancouver wants the tunnel dismantled so bigger ships can be handled and port capacity can increase.

Until this topic was raised, the dismantling of the tunnel was not an option.

So why is it that B.C. taxpayers and Metro resi-

dents (through road taxes yet to be determined) are going to be paying for Port Metro’s desire to have the tunnel removed? Port Metro is under federal jurisdiction yet it seems is pushing our provincial government into a decision that is not the choice for Metro Vancouver.

We only need to look at the traffic patterns and the growth in traffic at the border, the port and in the region to see this is also a very questionable choice for placement of a bridge. It does little to redirect traffic away from the Richmond/ Vancouver corridor, nor does it really allow for traffic growth to circumvent Vancouver.

This all begs the question: Why are we paying for this need of Port Metro?

And, more importantly, why are we even considering this alternative?

An appropriately placed bridge and maintaining the

tunnel would solve all of those issues, and do it in an economically feasible way.

To suggest the bridge is the only way to handle the public transportation requirements is just irresponsible.

Port Metro’s desire to increase shipping traffic is a separate issue that needs to be addressed by the federal government. The cost for this and the affect on regional infrastructure needs to be accounted for.

Neither the federal government nor Port Metro have suggested they would pay for any of the costs while being the only ones that would benefit.

We need to put pressure on Metro Vancouver and the provincial government to change direction on this issue. If we are going to pay for a bridge, let it be the right choice in the right location. And let it be a choice that will enhance our regional planning.

Editor: Prompt police action saved us from losing all our souvenirs and mementos from family members and friends from times gone by, including from the days we lived in the former Dutch East Indies and from trips we made later.

The police were able to catch the burglars. They said they were alerted by somebody in our area who

New name and location for Ladner kitchenware store Cobblestone Cottage has become Vinca’s Kitchen Cobblestone Cottage is now Vinca’s Kitchen.

Owner Alviene Wilkins took the opportunity to change the name of her business as it moved a few doors along 48th Avenue in Ladner Village.

Feds provide lift to gym project Ottawa grant helps fund elevator at Delta Sport Development Centre BY

Delta-Richmond East MP Kerry-Lynne Findlay was on hand for a second federal funding announcement in Delta last Friday, this one at the Delta Sport Development Centre.

The Delta Gymnastics Society was the beneficiary of a federal grant that helped construct an elevator at the Ladner facility.

The society, which raised hundreds of thousands toward the construction of the three-year-old centre but didn’t have enough for the lift at the time, also paid half the $60,000 price tag.

“Our government is pleased to support so many excellent projects like this one at the Delta Sport Development Centre,” said Findlay, minister of national

revenue. “Families and communities in Delta will benefit from this project, which has boosted economic activity, and has provided a modernized community facility for future generations.”

Findlay said it’s important to not only help fund new projects but also upgrades to existing infrastructure.

Remembering the gymnastics society’s humble beginnings in a church, Coun. Bruce McDonald spoke highly of the organization, which now has over 4,000 program participants annually.

Also on hand at the brief ribbon cutting ceremony were Delta South MLA Vicki Huntington, the society’s Carlene Lewall and others from the organization.

It was supposed to be a sea of red and white walking through Ladner last Sunday afternoon, but the weather resulted in a lot of rain jackets and umbrellas for Sacred Heart School’s annual walkathon. The 27th edition of the event saw almost 800 students and family members put on their walking shoes for a stroll around town in the large-scale fundraiser.

Be a hero by volunteering at this year’s May Days The theme of this year’s Ladner Pioneer May Days is Heroes & Villains, and you can be a hero just by volunteering to help with the event.

“Volunteers are absolutely critical to the success of May Days, and we can’t ever thank them enough for always being so generous with their time,” says Val Bartlett, who coordinates the volunteers for May Days.

The committee is seeking volunteers once again for this year’s event, set for May 23 to 25 at Memorial Park.

Volunteers are required for events and activities in the park, and a significant number of volunteers with physical strength and stamina are needed Sunday

morning to assist with the setup and takedown of the parade barricades, and to place “no parking” signs along the route.

Volunteer tasks include setting up the stage, assisting crafters in unloading their vehicles, changing sponsor signs and helping at the petting zoo.

People can volunteer for as little or as long as they desire, says Bartlett, and there are even opportunities for youth to get involved.

There are always a large number of energetic volunteers from Delta Secondary.

“We welcome volunteers who are 12 years and older,” says Bartlett. “It’s so great to witness the young ones getting involved — you can see the sense of accomplishment they feel.”

May Days festivities begin on Friday evening with discounted midway rides for kids. Saturday is filled with a broad range of family entertainers and many free activities and entertainment for children.

Sunday activities kick off with a pancake breakfast followed at noon by the parade, featuring the May Queen float.

With the theme of this year’s event being Heroes & Villains, volunteers are encouraged to dress as their favourite character.

Summer camps offered at Earthwise Garden Budding young gardeners are invited to grab a bucket and trowel this summer and dig in for the Junior Master Gardener’s summer camps at the Earthwise Garden and Farm in Boundary Bay. The camps are designed to get kids outdoors and playing in the dirt to discover the magic of nature and the fun of gardening.

Programs are for children seven to 12 and will run Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for eight weeks starting July 8.

SDSS visits Wonderland Production starts next week at Equinox Theatre BY

outh Delta Secondary is taking a trip to Wonderland next

week.

Alice in Wonderland will be staged at the Tsawwassen high school’s Equinox Theatre.

It’s an “incredibly iconic story,” says director Richard Cox, noting the play will be funny, entertaining and colourful.

Preparations started back in February.

“These kids are fabulous to work with. They’ve got lots of great energy,” says producer and drama teacher Jennifer Harbott.

“It’s been a long process.

A lot of set building ... a lot of creativity going into the production side of things this year which has really been fun for the kids,” she says.

Hannah Everett will play Alice.

“I’m really glad we’re doing Alice in Wonderland.

I think it’s well-known and hopefully will bring audiences because everyone knows it and everyone loves it,” she says.

Courtenay Lord, who will be playing the role of the caterpillar, says she’s getting to put her own “valley girl” twist on the character.

“We put a lot into our plays. We work very, very hard.”

Lord is excited to bring the popular story to life on the stage at SDSS. “We put a lot into our plays. We work very, very hard. It’s a challenging play just because of the crazy aspects; [like] Alice has got to change sizes multiple times in one scene. The way we’re handling it ... I think it’s really creative and I’m really excited.”

“We kind of get to be an

ensemble together, which is fun,” she says, noting there will be a few other students with playing card roles in her scene.

Alice in Wonderland will be staged at 7 p.m. from May 13 to 17 at the Equinox Theatre at South Delta Secondary.

There will be matinee performances on May 12, 14 and 15 at noon.

Carey Muir is hoping to start a coffee house in Ladner.

“It was a dream in my heart years ago,” he says.

He envisions the Wander Inn Café as something outside of the bar scene, a place to have a non-alcoholic beverage and be entertained with live music and conversation.

Tsawwassen’s Muir is the founder and co-director of Freshwave Ministries.

He says the coffee house, which would be open to anyone, will be run out of the Ladner Christian Fellowship to start and then its own space in the future.

He hopes it will start sometime in the summer.

“And that,” she says, “took me a long time.”

Exploring Alberta’s Badlands Landscapes morph gently while traveling aboard a wagon BY

If you grew up in the ‘50s and ‘60s, TV shows like Wagon Train, The Rifleman, Rawhide and other spaghetti Westerns were the stuff of Saturday afternoons.

“Circle the wagons” was the battle cry and the Lone Ranger — “hiyo Silver!” — was our masked crusader.

Today, reruns of these noirs favourites have become so au courant they are driving demand to relive the Wild West as it once was, albeit with a modern twist.

Move over Billy Crystal and wannabe cattle rustlers of City Slickers fame, Wagon Train Vacations offer roll ‘em on family fun and sleep-under-the-stars romance.

Make no mistake, this is a drive-it-yourself holiday, geared to those who want to take the reins of a Clydesdale team and feel

the rattling rhythm of the wheels beneath their buttocks. Surprisingly not uncomfortable, although leaner glutes might appreciate a cushion.

Wagon trips are a part of Alberta Prairie Railway that is better known for its day-long excursions out of Stettler where stick’em up train robberies are all part of the shtick. Wagons, however, travel out of Red Willow, a tiny hamlet about a 15-minute drive north of Stettler — the central heart of Alberta — and a 90minute drive northeast of Calgary.

Here, wagon master Jim Long hitches up your team, and with you in the driver’s seat, he escorts you in a free wheelin’ jaunt around a fairly pot-holed field.

Within minutes, you’re a teamster. Driving horsepowered teams like these is the origin of the term we associate today with truck drivers.

Trips last between two to four days depending on the itinerary, during which time your wagon becomes your castle. Accommodation is a shade more basic than a one-star hotel but is clean

and quirkily romantic.

Watching an electric storm dance across the wide Albertan sky is better than any pyrotechnic show or Sidney Pollock painting, and sleeping by the light of

a silvery moon is way better than Doris Day’s syrupy rendition of the song.

Washing facilities comprise ladling water out of a barrel and into a metal bowl and warming it up with steaming hot water from cookie’s stove. Yes, there’s a chuck wagon driving up the rear, well equipped with portable BBQ, iceboxes of produce and abundant supplies.

The road is actually a 16-kilometre (10-mile) trail of a disused railway track where trains once hauled grain from one silo to another before technology made them obsolete and put many a rural community on the endangered list. Some, however, are reinventing themselves with a fierce prairie pride.

There’s a hypnotic quality to the rhythm and speed of traveling on horsedrawn wheels. The passing landscapes morph gently from one vista to another.

Sweeping grasslands roll on in all directions and are sprinkled with occasional farms and ranches.

Unexpected swells of alder form whispering tunnels from which you emerge along a tranquil lake, or a corral of inquisitive horses, or a hillside of grazing cattle. Mostly, though, it’s a treeless beauty that inspires the imagination as to the courage and grit of the early pioneer homesteaders.

Travel further south and the Badlands take on an entirely different topography — a moonscape of multi-coloured canyons, hoodoos and. So, once you’ve hitched your wagon, spend a few days along the Dinosaur Trail to the Royal Tyrell Museum in Drumheller, and even dig for dinos yourself at Dinosaur Provincial Park.

SDSS shines in Hollywood BY

South Delta Secondary’s concert choir had a golden trip to Hollywood last month.

The group won gold at a Heritage Festival’s Music Performance event, said SDSS music director Danielle Hamilton.

“I was pretty darn proud because once I started hearing the caliber of performers I was a little nervous,” she said.

The students were invited to perform in California on April 11 and 12 after coming in first place at a festival in New York last year, she said.

All of the other students had previously won gold as well, she explained.

“The bar was set extra high.”

The choir was required to sing three contrasting pieces. The group performed an a cappella song called Voice

Dance, then a classical piece, On You Stay, in Latin and finally a Celtic piece called The Voice.

The school’s jazz choir also performed at the festival and was awarded silver.

The group was just a few points away from gold, Hamilton noted.

Grade 12 student Ai Matsumoto also won a solo award for her piano accompaniment of the choirs.

Matsumoto said she was surprised to get the award and that she appreciated everyone who supported her and gave her the chance to play.

She now gets the opportunity to perform in an honours series in New York’s Carnegie Hall next year.

Hamilton said Matsumoto is one of the best student accompanists she’s ever had.

She said future festival plans for SDSS include Banff next year and likely New Orleans in 2016.

YVR welcomed a record 17.97 million passengers in 2013, thanks to strong domestic travel and a tremendous boost in traffic to Asia-Pacific.

A record number of passengers chose to travel to and through YVR in 2013. In the same year, our shared passion for customer care broke another record: 91% customer satisfaction rating.

As essential as airport safety, sustainable airport operations remain a key focus for us. Environmental initiatives in 2013 included cycling infrastructure upgrades and a successful construction waste recycling program.

Tips for Clinic helps clients look as choosing the good as they feel These days more and more people are adopting a healthier lifestyle, embracing food and nutrition as a way to help them feel their best, and a Tsawwassen clinic is aiming to help people look their best as well.

“Our goal is to help people rejuvenate their appearance and help them look as good as they feel,” says Dr. Martin Ray, owner and medical director at View Laser Skin Rejuvenation Clinic.

The clinic specializes in non-surgical treatments, such as laser and lightbased therapies, stubborn fat reduction, dermal fillers and Botox, to help clients look refreshed and revitalized.

Using highly advanced techniques, Ray, who has been practicing medicine in Delta since 1985, is able to give his clients beautiful and natural results safely and comfortably.

In all, Ray says, the clinic aims to help people look and feel their best.

“In helping people look more like themselves, more alert and more approachable, it has an amazing impact on people’s lives,” he says.

“The feedback I get from people, it makes a big difference for them and I can’t express how much joy that gives me at the end of the day.”

Health experts have long touted the benefits of consuming enough essential fatty acids.

The human body does not naturally produce essential fatty acids (EFAs) so the only way to get them is through supplements and diet. The most common EFA talked about today is Omega-3, which is commonly found in many types of fish.

Essential fatty acids are proven to have a number of health benefits from protecting your heart and cardiovascular system, to reducing inflammation and helping with arthritis symptoms to boosting brain power, memory and mood.

However, most Canadians, for a variety of reasons, don’t get enough fish in their diet to ingest an adequate level of EFAs, and turn to fish oil supplements.

There are a number of factors to consider when choosing a fish oil supplement, says Brad Andrews, a natural health advisor at Parsley Sage & Thyme Health Store in Ladner.

Fish oils have two main components, among others, EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid).

Taking the time Time. Do we have enough? Does it seem to be too little for all we try to accomplish? Do we manage our time or does time manage us? I’m sure there are many more either/or questions we could pose regarding time.

In his book titled Holy Currencies, Eric Law presents time as one of the many currencies that need to flow freely in order for its value to be fully realized.

When we try to hold too firmly or even withhold any currency (time, money, truth...) it stagnates and its value is diminished.

When we apply this idea to the flow of time, it would seem to challenge some of our typical concepts and even language around time.

Things like efficient and effective

use of time, scheduled meetings for work, relational time or even recreational time can often feel stilted, mechanical.

Over the last generation we’ve even bowed to the pressure of scheduling play dates for our children.

Whatever happened to the freedom of time and space for play?

I experience the need in ministry to be much more flexible with regard to the freedom of time.

I’ve had people say, “I don’t want to take up your time, you’re so busy.”

I try to say something like, “Feel free to interrupt, I’m here to talk if you need to.”

I would like to encourage us to live in “Grace Time” so we are able to respond freely, in the moment.

Pound for pound, Mika Hosoi is as strong as they come.

At roughly 5-feet tall and 95-pounds, the Ladner teen is hardly intimidating. Yet put her in front of a climbing wall and she becomes Spiderwoman — using mainly her fingertips to defy gravity and swiftly scale her way to the top.

Hosoi is a sport climber and is representing B.C. at the upcoming Nationals in Montreal after winning last month’s Provincial Speed and Difficulty Championships for her age group.

The Grade 9 South Delta secondary French Immersion student will also heading to the South Pacific later this year to compete for Canada at the Climbing World Youth Championships in New Caldedonia.

Her first taste of climbing was at a birthday party at the Cliffhanger in Richmond. That was seven years ago. She joined a youth club and began working with a coach three times a week.

She added an extra day to her training schedule when she moved to The Hive in East Vancouver last fall.

Hosio thrives in Bouldering and Sport Climbing. The latter involves ropes and anchors for safety and has greater options for competitions, especially in Canada.

“I actually like Bouldering more,” smiled Hosoi prior to a Sunday morning workout at The Hive.

“I just feel it’s more about climbing rather than worrying about safety. Sure there is a bit of fear to it, but it’s thrilling as well.”

In Sport Climbing, competitors are racing against the clock and have six minutes to ascend as far as they can. For Bouldering, athletes are presented with wall challenges. A point system awards the more difficult problems and deductions are also made based on the number of attempts for each challenge.

“It’s just not like any other sport,” continued Hosio. “It’s a puzzle and you have to figure it out.

You have to be really strong but you also have to read what you are going to climb and figure out how you are going to do it. Your strength is worthless if you can’t do that.

“Sometimes my thoughts on the wall are just random. I’m trying not to think where other competitors have got to or how hard it its. But the main thing is it’s a lot of fun.”

A typical season runs from November until February with Sport Climbing Association of B.C. sanctioned competitions taking place every couple of weeks. The sport is still relatively new in Canada but much bigger abroad.

“I really want to be able to compete well at World Cups one day and get on the podium,” said Hosio.

Right now, her focus is to continue her improvement at the youth level. She is the two-

time provincial champion at the 14-to-15-year-old age group and will be looking to better her 25th place finish at the 2013 Worlds.

Last year, Victoria hosted the Nationals and the Worlds. This time the travel budget takes a significant hit to compete on the big stage.

U13 Selects add Coastal Cup to impressive debut season Delta Coastal Selects U13 girls district rep soccer team continued its outstanding inaugural season by capturing B.C. Soccer’s Coastal “A” Cup with a 2-0 victory over Port Coquitlam on April 26 in Richmond.

Earlier, the Selects ended the regular season as Metro League champions and began their Coastal run with an impressive win over No. 2 ranked North Shore, before road victories over Surrey and Vancouver. The girls had also already secured a berth into the Provincial “A” Cup Championships, slated for July in Burnaby.

“This club dug down deep all season and played with determination and consistency.

Their focus and perseverance was amazing.

Together they can be proud of what they have achieved. As a newly formed team

from Surrey, North Delta, Tsawwassen and Ladner, they really subscribed to our coaching philosophy and worked hard as a team,” said head coach Gordon McGahey.

“The players really supported each other and the girls should be very proud of themselves. It is a well deserved victory, one that they worked hard for and they will not forge,” added assistant coach Brian Burns.
