Rotating strike to hit next week Delta schools are scheduled to be behind picket lines next Wednesday as teachers escalate job action BY

SANDOR GYARMATI

sgyarmati@delta-optimist.com

Delta public school students will get a day off next week due to an escalation of job action by B.C. teachers. The B.C. Teachers’ Federation this week announced a series one-day rotating strikes that will impact every district in the province between Monday and

Thursday of next week. Delta schools will be behind picket lines on Wednesday. According to the BCTF, the escalating job action is a result of the unwillingness of the provincial government and the B.C. Public School Employers’ Association to offer any improvements to class size, class composition and other important learning conditions for students, as well as their unfair

wage demands. All schools across B.C. will be open on Friday, May 30. Any extension of the rotating job action will depend on events at the bargaining table, according to the teachers’ union. A spokesperson for the Delta school district said a letter would be sent to parents this week notifying them of next week’s school closures. At this point, the district

has no indication that graduations will be affected, however, if the strike progresses this might be a concern, she said. The district notes picket lines would be in place throughout the day, so CUPE support staff won’t cross, which means only principals and vice-principals will be in school buildings. Since staff will not be available to provide adequate supervision or instruc-

tion, the district is asking parents to make alternative childcare arrangements. Strong Start Centres will also be closed. Daycare operations in school district buildings should remain open, but parents are being advised to call ahead to confirm with operators. See STRIKE page 3

Opponents fighting a contentious plan to erect radio transmission towers in Point Roberts aren’t buying the notion their fight is over with Federal Communications Commission in the U.S. Three local residents involved in the fight were told as much by DeltaRichmond East MP KerryLynne Findlay, who organized a meeting Tuesday at her Ladner constituency office that also included the Canadian deputy head of mission from Washington D.C. as well as the senior political, economic and academic officer from the Canadian Consulate General in Seattle. Findlay said Industry Canada has confirmed the FCC was aware of Tsawwassen and took the community into consideration when reviewing the application by BBC Broadcasting Inc. to erect five 45-metre (150-foot) steel towers at an undeveloped lot on McKenzie Way, about 330 metres south of the border. The towers would transmit South Asian radio station KRPI, AM 1550, which currently broadcasts to a Lower Mainland audience using antenna in Ferndale, Wash. The FCC granted a construction permit but a conditional use permit is still required from Whatcom

County. Findlay stressed the focus should be at the county level and that she’s been trying to ensure Tsawwassen residents would be given a full opportunity to be heard when a hearing is held. She added the questions raised by the residents

The federal government, which recently cited towers in East Richmond among examples of radio transmission infrastructure not causing complaints, says the FCC was aware of Tsawwassen when it made its decision on the Point Roberts application.

at her meeting would be brought back to Industry Canada for answers. Saying she was shocked to hear the FCC had considered Tsawwassen, especially when the applicant’s map omitted the community, Nancy Beaton of the Cross Border Coalition to Stop the Radio Towers said the application wouldn’t meet FCC requirements. Beaton, who was one of the three residents, along with Steve Graham and Jim Ronback, at Findlay’s meeting, also wonders if the

U.S. agency mistook Ladner for Tsawwassen, because Ladner was mentioned as being a few kilometres away on the map. Beaton said her group has a series of questions that need answers. “We strongly suspect that when FCC and IC (Industry Canada) used the word ‘interference’ with respect to knowing about the interference in Tsawwassen at the time they granted the building permit, they did not distinguish whether one was talking about cross-

border adjacent channel interference or cross-border blanketing interference which will occur in Tsawwassen,” states part of a letter now being drafted. Blanketing interference, which has been a huge problem in Ferndale, wreaks havoc with household electronic devices, including TVs, computers, cordless phones and more. Whatcom County is still waiting for additional information from the radio station before it holds a public hearing.

possibility of an escalation before the school year was done. “You never know what’s going to happen. If I can wave my magic job action wand, I would, and I would give us what we need, which is a fair deal for teachers and better support for kids in the classroom,”

he said. “I don’t have that power. There is, however, one person in this province who does, and that’s the premier of this province, Christy Clark, who said when she settled with the container truckers, ‘Why have a fight when you can get a deal?’ That’s exactly my question

now to her.” The contentious relationship between government and teachers could get worse as there are reports this week the province has threatened to cut teachers’ wages by five per cent if a new contract isn’t reached by the end of the school year.

SPCA and RCMP probe deaths of Ladner dogs Animal cruelty and public mischief charges possible BY

JESSICA KERR

jkerr@delta-optimist.com

As the investigation continues into the deaths of six Ladner canines while in the care of their dog walker, the B.C. SPCA could recommend charges in the coming days. Spokesperson Lorie Chortyk said investigators already have information from some of the necropsies and could be recommending animal cruelty charges to Crown counsel as early as next week. “We’re hoping that it will be done quickly,” she said yesterday. Chortyk said instances of dogs becoming sick or dying after being left in a vehicle on a hot day are, unfortunately, quite common, but this is the first time she’s seen a case on this scale. “It’s a very unique case in having someone who is paid to look after animals,” she said. On Monday, the search for the dogs, which have

become known as the Brookswood 6, came to a grim conclusion. Originally believed stolen from the dog walker’s truck at a Langley park, the dogs’ bodies were recovered from an Abbotsford ditch.

“We’re hoping that it will be done quickly.” Lorie Chortyk

The search began early last week after the dog walker reported the six canines, including her own, were taken from the back of her truck. The distraught owners, who all live in Ladner, rallied, following leads, distributing flyers, offering a reward and calling in Petsearchers Canada, a Vancouver-area pet detective and bloodhound tracking service. On Monday, Petsearchers announced that, in fact, the dogs had died, likely from heat exhaustion, after being left in the back of the truck.

The SPCA has taken over the investigation into the alleged mistreatment of the dogs, while the Langley RCMP is investigating possible public mischief charges. While they wait for the legal process to take its course, the dogs’ owners are hoping to incite some changes to Canada’s animal cruelty laws by starting an online petition to make animal cruelty an indictable offence under the Criminal Code. The petition has already garnered more than 4,000 signatures. There is also an online fundraising drive, initially started to help cover the costs of the search for the dogs, that will now help fund memorials for the canines as well as legal fees. Donations can be made by visiting www.gofundme. com/97yjh4. The petition can be found at www.thepetitionsite.com and searching Brookswood 6.

Girls involved in stabbing at North Delta high school A teenage girl is in custody following an alleged stabbing of another girl during a fight at Delview Secondary in North Delta Wednesday afternoon. According to Delta police, two 15-year-old girls were involved in a fight on the grounds of the school on 116th Street when one of them pulled a knife and

stabbed the other in the arm. The injuries are described by police as non-life threatening. Police and the school district are investigating the incident, which took place around 2:30 p.m. and resulted in a lockdown of the school. The fight occurred as

the school was taking part in Reconciliation Day, bringing aboriginal culture, history and teaching of residential schools to the entire student body. The event was to teach students about aboriginal issues, but also broaden culture acceptance, embrace diversity, and exemplify empathy and compassion.

MURPHY’S LAW There’s compelling evidence to suggest we live in a pretty safe place. In a metropolis that has its fair share of criminal activity, South Delta provides a retreat, a refuge from the ills associated with big city living. As much as it might seem like it sometimes, we don’t live in Mayberry, which means it’s still necessary to lock our cars and homes to protect us from an element, although not large, that’s ready to strike should the opportunity arise. Despite this reality, I’m amazed at the number of people that don’t take the simplest of precautions and lock the door behind them, particularly when it comes to their cars. Maybe I’m too anal, perhaps it’s because I’ve edited one too many installments of the Crime Beat or it could just be a case of being overly protective of my Shania Twain CD, but I’d never think of leaving my car unlocked. Given it takes all of a nanosecond to lock all the doors remotely, it doesn’t strike me as that much effort compared to the protection it provides. Yet every Friday in the Crime Beat there are examples of thieves breaking into cars that are either unlocked or are locked but have valuables in plain view. In fact, the instances are so commonplace that if I have to edit the column to fit the available space, I almost always lop off these types of reports because of their redundancy. Despite what should be a weekly reminder not to make your vehicle appealing to opportunistic thieves, there’s a never-ending list of reports where wallets, laptops, cell phones and other valuables are stolen. Heck, thieves will even violate your personal space for a pair of sunglasses or some loose change, so pretty much anything acts as an inducement. I’m not telling you anything you don’t already know or that isn’t painfully obvious, yet several weeks ago 10 cars in one Ladner neighbourhood were broken into and, according to police, in every case the vehicle had been left unlocked. What are these people thinking? It won’t happen to them? Well, it takes place with enough frequency that it will happen to you if you continue to tempt fate. It must be maddening for police to have to respond to so many property crime calls that could have been easily prevented. That’s not to say the victims deserved what they got, but they certainly could have helped themselves by employing the most basic of safety precautions. It’s comforting to know we live in a safe place, but that doesn’t mean we can let our guard down.

Growing port doesn’t appear to be answerable to anyone IAN ROBERTSON

COMMUNITY COMMENT Our neighbour, Port Metro Vancouver, is a federally regulated activity that has no accountability to us in Delta. Its articles say it is accountable to federal Minister of Transport Lisa Raitt. However, as reported last year, the minister said she does not “interfere” with port operations. All of which leaves one wondering: “Who is minding the store?” The South Fraser Perimeter Road, or Highway 17 as it is now known, was to be built for the port at an estimated $700 million by former premier by Gordon Campbell. It was completed for about $1.3 billion, of which $300 million was a federal contribution. The B.C. taxpayer paid $1 billion to move trucks up the valley

and totally screw up commuters from Tsawwassen wanting to go to Vancouver. Nice play, Port Metro. But remember, this was in “the national interest.” Last year the CEO of the port was quoted as suggesting the Fraser Valley would be better off if it was industrial land. Is this what we voted for? Who controls land use in Delta? Last fall our premier announced that her government had reviewed discussions involving the George Massey Tunnel and an eight- to 10lane bridge was to replace the tube. “Details to follow” meant we don’t know how much it will cost, but we’re going to do it anyway. Meanwhile, there are stories that despite higher costs for a bridge, the port wants to remove the tunnel so bigger ships can go up the Fraser River. Port staff, however, indicates the bigger ships cannot turn around up the river, so what’s the real story? Recently some sleuthing by a Vancouver Sun reporter found the port had been planning to dredge Vancouver Harbour to allow for larger tankers to Kinder Morgan’s

site to load up on dil-bit to ship to Asia. The dredging plan was put on hold when it was discovered Metro Vancouver weren’t about to replace the water lines under the harbour with a new tunnelled line. Hence, the ships will load to 85 per cent of capacity. Last winter, as part of its improvement program (note it is not called expansion), the port was busy remediating the shoreline in Delta. As one wise person asked: Why remediate unless you intend to destroy something later? No answer. All of this brings me to ask the question: What is the port really up to? In planning for a dramatic increase in tanker traffic, it compares Vancouver to Singapore. Thank you, but have we seen this plan, debated it, and when did we decide we want to be comparable? Why is the port afraid to really talk about its plans for Delta? Does it believe it already has approval for Terminal 2, a doubling of the container handling capacity that is there now? What is the port up to? Who will decide?

May 23, 2014 The Delta Optimist A9 Letters to the Editor

Editor: Delta and B.C. citizens need to refuse to accept that $1,000 less per pupil funding than the average Canadian student should be status quo for B.C. students and schools. It’s time to roll up our sleeves and do what is tough. The alternatives are unacceptable. Schools need libraries and librarians for those libraries. My heart dropped when I heard the Coquitlam school district won’t have any librarians next year. Is that Delta school district’s future too? Our amazing Delta culinary programs have already been threatened year after year after year. They keep getting “saved,” but it is infuriating to think they’ll likely be targeted for cuts again next year, and the year after that.

Teachers need math resources, manageable workloads, time to prepare for students within their workday, especially elementary teachers who get roughly an hour less prep time per week than teachers in other provinces. Ideally our district could afford to bring in math or music or French specialists to teach some classes every few days and give the classroom teachers time to prep, mark and plan. But provincial funding just hasn’t kept up with rising costs. Parents in one neighbourhood have time to fundraise and money to donate, so their kids get field trips and new playgrounds and books and computers, whereas parents in another neighbourhood don’t have time or money because they’re struggling to get by.

The purpose of public health, public schools, public anything is for it to be equitable. This imbalance between neighbourhoods of haves and have-nots that depend on charity is appalling. I could work in a brand new school with books and computers and still feel gutted that a colleague teaches in another neighbourhood or town without enough books for her students or a heated classroom or old and broken gym/science/insertsubject-here equipment. Public education isn’t charity. It’s an investment that requires long-term support, longer support than a four-year political term. This is a situation where anyone who cares about society and social justice and democracy needs to dig deep and do something. Nicole Jarvis

It’s been more than a year since man went missing Tsawwassen boy waits for his dad, Vaclav ‘Walter’ Simek, 53, who disappeared without a trace early last year BY

TOM ZYTARUK

Optimist contributor

A Tsawwassen boy continues to wait for his dad who’s been missing for over a year now. The Surrey RCMP’s Missing Persons Unit is once again appealing for help in finding Vaclav “Walter” Simek, 53, who was reported missing on April 10, 2013. Maria Gonzalez, his ex-wife, believes his dis-

appearance was planned, and possibly brought on by depression or another mental illness. The couple divorced after 13 years of marriage. They have a 13-year-old son. Gonzalez, who lives in Tsawwassen, described Simek as a “good dad” who saw their son every weekend. “Suddenly he stopped returning calls and coming to pick him up,” she said. “My son waits for his

dad every single day.” Gonzalez said Simek, an avid camper, had been living in an RV park in White Rock before he vanished. “It’s quite very strange,” she said of the case. “We have no clue whatsoever.” Simek’s Visa account and bank account have not been touched, she said. Simek was last seen on March 7, 2013. Police believe someone dropped him off near 200th Street and 40th Avenue in

Langley. Surrey RCMP Cpl. Bert Paquet said the investigation has thus far revealed that Simek rented a car in late February/early March and used it to move some of his belongings to an unknown place. The car was returned on March 7. “Since then there has been no banking activity or cell phone use on any of Simek’s accounts,” Paquet said. “There is no evidence of foul play, nor is there any

evidence to suggest he has left the country.” Simek is six feet three inches tall, was 210 pounds and has blue eyes and had brown hair. Besides his disappearance, he is not known to police. Police ask anyone with information that could help them find Simek to contact the Surrey RCMP’s Missing Person’s Unit at 604-5990502, quoting file number 2013-43817.

Panda

A little bit about Panda: Miss Panda was originally adopted from the Shelter by a sweet elderly woman. Sadly a few years later, her owner passed away and none of the woman’s family could keep Panda so she was surrendered back to the shelter. Panda is a beautiful, confident girl who appreciates the “less is more” type of attention from people, though she is happy to rub against your leg and hop onto your lap for some pets when the mood suits her. She prefers affection on her own terms, so would not do well living in a home with children. Panda must not go to a home with dogs, as she gets very upset and defensive around them. She would thrive in a quiet, indoor only, adult only home, where she can snooze by a sunny window during the day and then curl up on the sofa next to her people at night, to watch “Dancing with the Stars”.

Kwantlen still has plans for Paterson: president It wouldn’t be a full campus, but some sort of educational facility envisioned BY

DAVE WILLIS

dwillis@delta-optimist.com

Kwantlen Polytechnic University president and vice-chancellor Alan Davis said some sort of educational centre could be built at Paterson Park during a speech to a Delta Chamber of Commerce luncheon Wednesday. Davis said the post secondary institution is hoping one day to develop the land, in partnership with others,

to create educational facilities there. “It would be great somewhere down the road to have some kind of mixed use development there that meets the needs of the community. We’re pretty open,” he told the Optimist after his talk at the Coast Tsawwassen Inn. “We have the land. We do expect, given all the activity out here, that we could have some kind of learning centre, some kind of facility

that serves the local learners.” Paterson Park, the former harness racetrack at the entrance to Ladner, is divided into two parcels: one owned by Kwantlen and the other by Delta. Kwantlen, which acquired the land two decades ago, had considered selling the site a couple of years ago after determining another campus wasn’t feasible. Davis said a potential

facility wouldn’t be a full campus but something that uses technology as well as provides services, a meeting place and classrooms. “However that happens, we’re pretty open. We really need to take our lead from the corporation and the community.” Davis also went over what’s new at Kwantlen, including talking to the Tsawwassen First Nation about developing a farm school.

Ladner’s Nick Gee has a new CD out, Hope, and will be playing at May Days on Saturday. He’s already working on a follow up album. “Music is infinite and you can’t stop getting better,” he says.

ick Gee says his new CD Hope is a very honest album. “It was very true, from the lyrics to the whole production,” says the 24-yearold Ladner musician. There’s a song on the

album, which was released in March, for everyone, he says. “It’ll put your mind in a direction where you can say, ‘Yes, I can do this,’ and ‘I can do whatever I want. Look at this guy.’” Gee recently held a CDrelease show in Vancouver before heading out on the

road to promote his work. He did 10 shows in 10 days on the trip that saw him perform in places like Hope (where he has a cabin and wrote most of his songs), Kelowna, Vernon, Jasper, Edmonton, Calgary and Banff. One of his new songs, Good People, did very well

in CBC’s Searchlight competition. Gee, who grew up in Ladner and went to Delta Secondary, developed a passion for playing the guitar in high school. When he was 19 he came out with an EP with the first seven songs he’d ever written. He started playing

shows, selling CDs and had his dream grow from there. He says it took about two years to complete Hope. He’s already working on a follow up album. “Music is infinite and you can’t stop getting better,” he says. Gee will be performing at this year’s Ladner May

Days at Memorial Park. He takes the stage Saturday at 12:30 p.m. and plans on playing songs from his new CD along with a few covers. The CD is available on iTunes, Amazon and CD Baby. For more visit www.nickgeemusic.com.

Transformation celebrates art & local artists BY

DAVE WILLIS

Tsawwassen United Church will be hosting an art event early next month. Transformation features an open submission gallery and speaker series. “It’s a way of celebrating local art and artists and getting the community pulled together around that,” says Rev. Dan Kirkegaard. He’s encouraging local artists to take part and sub-

mit their work. “It’s an open gallery,” he says. The church hosted the event last year and the idea is to have it run on an annual basis. A speaker series takes place on the Saturday and will feature talks from Michael Duncan, a group from L’Arche Greater Vancouver and Sue Mosteller. Those interested in learning about creating art can

visit a studio area where artist Birgit Coath will be working with attendees. Transformation goes from June 6 to 8 at Tsawwassen United Church, 695-53rd St. Times are: 6 to 9 p.m. on Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sunday. Visit the church’s website at www.tsawwassenunited. org, email tuc@telus.net or call 604-943-2911 for more on the event.

Busy stretch for Tsaw. violist Kendra James in pair of competitions then back to Germany for school BY

DAVE WILLIS

dwillis@delta-optimist.com

Tsawwassen violist Kendra James has a busy few weeks ahead of her. She is in Toronto for the Canadian Music Competition’s Stepping Stone. It’s described in a press release as a “prestigious, elite-level classical music competition that helps propel top talent onto the world stage.” The grand prize is $10,000, a three-week residency at the Banff Centre and a chance to perform with the Orchestre symphonique de Québec at a July 5 gala concert in Quebec City. The competition runs from May 21 to 29. After Stepping Stone, James, 26, will spend a week at home in Tsawwassen preparing for another competition, the Primrose International

Viola Competition in Los Angeles, from June 8 to 14. The main difference between the two competitions is that James will compete against musicians playing different instruments in Toronto while the focus will be on viola in L.A. “One of the major challenges in both of these competitions is having such a sheer volume of notes memorized, and in my fingers, ready to play, over several rounds within the space of one week,” she says in an email. She notes that because the competitions are so close together, she tried to overlap the repertoire choices as much as possible. “I think I’ve found a good balance between works that show off flashy, virtuoso technique and other more lyrical pieces where I can express my musicality and a wide pal-

four years old at the Delta Community Music School and then soon joined the Delta Youth Orchestra,

graduated from Yale University last May. She moved to Munich, Germany in October where

she will be studying at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater München for two years. She’s in a program where she takes private viola lessons in English but then often has to rehearse or receive chamber music “coachings” entirely in German. She shares an apartment with another Canadian, a violinist from Calgary, who is also studying at the Hochschule. “It is really encouraging to feel a sense of camaraderie as we figure out life in a foreign country together. Music is such an international language, however, that it is easy to identify with the other musicians I meet,” she says. She will spend a week at home with her family after the competitions before returning to Germany for more performances and to finish the school year.

Delta Archives celebrates history of May Days A tradition dating back to 1896, Ladner Pioneer May Days returns this weekend. Once again, the community will turn out for the parade and all the activities in Memorial Park. And once again, many photographs will be taken to capture these joyful moments in time. The Delta Archives is giving the public a chance to look back at past May Days through photos and stories in a new exhibit that opens next week. A Delta Self Portrait: A History of May Days runs

During the day I would start napping every time I would sit down, because I was tired. Since taking Bell #23 sleeping 6 hours is heaven. It made a substantial change in my life. Mary C. Myrick, 62, Jackson, MS !It is such a joy not having to use the CPAP machine. I have had sleep apnea for 10 years. Using Bell#23, my wife says there is no more snoring or stoppage of breathing. It is such a joy to be able to roll to left or right with no hose or mask to deal with. Thank you Bell for a great relief. I suggest anyone with these problems to try it. You will be overjoyed with the results. Wayne Burse, 63, Beamsville, ON. Try your local health food stores first. RESTAURANT GUIDE

Illuminate Restorante offers a splendid dining experience serving authentic Italian cuisine. Enjoy your dinner in the magnificent dining area or reserve a private dining room that is perfect for corporate meetings or to celebrate special occasions. If it is a larger table, gratify your company in the semi-private dining chamber which seats up to 24 and can include patio access.

Our open kitchen design offers Italian Cuisine in a Tuscan atmosphere.

During the warmer months enjoy the fresh air and garden atmosphere on the patio while dining on a sumptuous meal or feast. Illuminate is always preparing seasonal availability of fresh fish, game, fruits and vegetables. By partnering with local farmers and other groups, Illuminate provides the best local and seasonal produce which in turn creates more nutritious meals and a better overall environment. Owner Roland and staff take pride in only serving certified Angus beef dry aged to perfection. Gluten free pasta is available by request. Whatever your occasion you will truly delight in an exquisite dining experience here.

We use fresh organic ingredients to prepare a perfect balance of flavor in all dishes. Our extensive repertoire takes full advantage of seasonal availability of fish, game, fruits and vegetables. Sauces are prepped from vegetable purees and reductions of stocks. A lightness of taste is derived from minimizing animal fats and creams in favor of low cholesterol olive oils. Gluten free alternatives are available in most dishes served.

Time to celebrate May Days come to Ladner this weekend — a time to celebrate our community and the people who live here! What a wonderful opportunity to come together to meet neighbours and old friends so we can play together, eat together and basically make a “glad sound” together. The Christian community takes this model of celebration and participates in it every week of the year. Ideally, we celebrate every day of the year too. We come together to rejoice in fellowship and to gather around God’s table to share a meal that reminds us just how much God loves us. There is also a time of opening our hearts and minds to listen for God’s word in our lives, but definitely there is the chance to lift the rafters of the

roof as we sing together and make a “glad sound” praising God’s presence in our lives. In the early church, about 100 years or so after the death and resurrection of Jesus, the disciples and friends of Jesus met in secret places (for fear of the religious authorities of the day) “for the apostles teaching, the fellowship, the breaking of bread and the prayers.” That’s what we do today. So this weekend, gather with some friends, learn something new, grab some delicious food and make a happy sound! But don’t forget that perhaps there might be a deeper craving. Gather in God’s presence, learn of God’s will, gather at God’s table and pray for God’s world. Now there’s a wonderful May Days!

School’s environmental work earns Wetland Heroes Award

Beach Grove Elementary was recognized with a Wetland Heroes Award last week. Ducks Unlimited’s national education co-ordinator, Merebeth Switzer, presented the award to the school May 15 in recognition of its longstanding environmental education programs. Principal Rachael Corneil accepted the award and

$500 from Newalta and Ducks Unlimited Canada, the national sponsors of the Wetland Heroes program. The award is one of five Ducks Unlimited presents annually across Canada. Beach Grove Elementary’s close relationship with the local environment has helped students develop a strong sense of stewardship. Through their studies they have become

wetland experts, advocates for wildlife, tree conservationists and beach protectors. As they learn, they share their knowledge and experiences with the local community, Delta schools and inner city schools. Beach Grove students are thrilled to receive the award, which will help fund future wetland discoveries by the Tsawwassen school.

Provincials next for Sun Devils

South Delta heads to senior girls soccer tournament in Vancouver as Fraser Valley champions A spectacular year for senior girls athletics at South Delta secondary continued last week on an ideal spring afternoon at Winskill Park. The South Delta Sun Devils captured the Fraser Valley AAA soccer championship with a hard-fought 1-0 win over the Dr. Charles Best Blue Devils. The result gives the Tsawwassen school four Fraser Valley titles during the school year, with earlier accomplishments coming in field hockey, volleyball and gymnastics. The outcome of this championship wasn’t determined until the the final minutes of regulation time when the Devils snuck behind the Best back line to break a scoreless deadlock. Up until that point, their dangerous oponent from Coquitlam had enjoyed the better scoring chances and it took a terrific effort defensively to keep the scoresheet clean. South Delta was playing in its sixth Fraser Valley final in the last 10 years — led by longtime coaches Stephen Burns and Brent Sweeney. Both schools advance to next week’s provincial AAA championships, starting Thursday in Vancouver. The Sun Devils roster includes— Grade 12s: Alessia Azermandi, Lauren Boggs, Jasmine Crump, Krista Jensen, Nadia Langenberg, Jasmine McLean, Cailean Meredith, Kiersten Sawchuck. Grade 11s: Jessica Hasker, Melissa Walter. Grade 10s: Damara Begin, Elisa Dogor, Chantelle Gouthro, Olivia Sheppard, Ava Simpson, Mia Simpson, Ella Taylor. Grade 9s: Anika Bosch, Samantha Kaltenegger, Kheya McGill, Rebecca Way, Ally Wray. Grade 8: Hannah Dela Cruz. Corner kicks…. Sweeney patrolled the sidelines by himself as Burns was busy guiding the McMath Wildcats to the Vancouver and District championship with a 1-0 win over Kitsilano. The Wildcats and Sun Devils will enter the provincials ranked No. 1 and No. 2 respectively.

The Ladner Pioneers received the reassurance they were looking for, even if it came at the expense of another loss to their arch-rival. The Pioneers dropped a 7-5 home floor decision to the TriCity Bandits who look capable of running away with regular season honours in the West Coast Senior Lacrosse Association. The win improved the six-time defending champions’ record to 4-0 while the Pioneers slipped to 3-2-1. The bigger picture suggests they are right where they need to be with two

Central defenders Jessica Hasker (front) and Jasmine Crump were outstanding in the South Delta Sun Devils’ 1-0 win over Charles Best in the Fraser Valley championship game.

B.C. teams guaranteed President’s Cup berths, thanks to the Bandits hosting this year’s tournament. “I think it showed we are going to be okay in the long run,” said Ladner head coach Bob Taylor. “We are going with a lot of youth and more local talent where they are essentially a team of outside players. We’re going to stick with our plan and we are confident it’s going to pay off in the long run.” Taylor noted the team was missing plenty of firepower for the showdown with Nathan Clare and Travis St. Germain in Europe, while Cam Taylor is expected to be sidelined another week with an

injury. The club also learned it’s likely without the services of Mike Vincent and Jared Wheatley for the balance of the season after both suffered serious injuries during last year’s playoff run to the league finals. “We will miss those two but we like the depth we have and it’s going to take all 25 guys we signed to get it done,” added Taylor.” The Pioneers played catch-up lacrosse for much of the night after the Bandits erased a 1-0 with four unanswered first period goals. Matt Hannah and Quinn Waddington’s second goals of the game put the hosts on even terms after 40 min-

utes, but Jarett Dorman notched the game winner at the 6:34 mark of the third period. Darcy Cummings beat Rob Cook for an insurance goal with 3:33 left. Clay Collison had the Ladner goal, while Chad Miller was solid in the Bandits’ net, making 35 saves, including 16 in the final period. Ladner returns to action with a rare Sunday afternoon game when the Nanaimo Timbermen visit Sungod Arena at 5:30 p.m. The Timbermen (3-1-1) and North Shore Indians (4-1) are expected to be the Pioneers biggest hurdles towards advancing to nationals.

Rowers gear up for own regatta

Delta Deas Rowing Club’s junior program tuned up for its own competition this weekend with a strong showing at the 53rd annual Shawnigan Lake Regatta. The event took place at the beautiful Shawnigan Lake Provincial Park and featured some of the top high school crews in Western Canada. For the most part, the weekend weather co-operated and allowed for the events to run on time. Saturday’s races were delayed for three hours due to winds. Once the officials felt that the water conditions were once again safe, the events were restarted. As always, the contingent of 18 juniors represented the Delta Deas Rowing Club with great sportsmanship, and team unity. They produced two gold medals, along with a silver and bronze. The golds were won by Alex Larocque, Daniel Kruckenberg, Ben Morton, Trevor MacDougall, and Natalie Whitehead. Robert Hodgins

The Tigers roster includes: Dylan Archbold, Gryffin Painter, Casey Cartlidge, Daniel Trouwborst, Brady MacDonald, Lucus Bates, Taylor Pearce, Luca Goyal, Tysei Webster, Adam Reid, Kai Stewart, Macin MacDonald and Branden Orellana Murcia. The coaches are Ron Pearce, Sean MacDonald and Kenji Stewart. The Caron family was on hand to honour Jesse’s memory and hand out the championship trophy, which was a very touching tribute. The competition and sportsmanship displayed by all the teams was outstanding through the sun filled baseball weekend. The players and coaches also thank the dedicated volunteers for their outstanding work to make the tournament possible.
