45 YEARS OF APPRECIATION A MESSAGE TO OUR COMMUNITY Thank you so much for over forty years of donating gently used clothing, furniture, books and household items to be sold at Delta Hospital Auxiliary’s Ladner Thrift Shop. All money raised from this great partnership goes towards patient comforts and leading edge medical equipment at Delta Hospital. Your generosity allows us to contribute in a major way to health care at our hospital. Over $18 million dollars have been donated by the Auxiliary over the years and we have committed to raise a further 2.4 million towards equipping a proposed new Diagnostic Centre at our hospital, the largest donation ever from an auxiliary. The Thrift Shop is the largest of the Auxiliary’s four business enterprises with over 200 volunteers.
FROM THE THRIFT SHOP
WANT TO HELP?
D
id you know that more than $2,000 per month of Thrift Shop income is lost by paying for disposal of unsalable items? Your cooperation would be appreciated in not donating certain items due to health concerns, liability issues or excessive wear as our signs indicate. The Auxiliary does not enjoy free disposal and pick up. Therefore every mattress, torn/stained chesterfield and broken TV, microwave or printer that is dumped off at the Thrift Shop the Auxiliary costs us money to have hauled away; money which could have been donated to the hospital. A good rule of thumb for donations is this: If you could give this to your friends or family, then we could probably sell it. If in doubt as to what we accept, you can call the shop during business hours at 604-946-1455 but please note your items cannot be approved over the phone. When you bring furniture or larger items, please make sure you speak to the Daily Supervisor before dropping your items off at the shop. It is also very much appreciated if you bring donations during our open hours: Mon 1-4:30pm, Tue-Sat 10am-3pm.
Would you like this in your backyard?
Join our crew of dedicated volunteers. Meet new people, make friends and contribute to the community. Volunteer opportunities include: Outside Men: Come out to the Thrift Shop for a FREE workout each week! We supply all the weights (furniture and boxes) and a good healthy dose of cardio (moving furniture and boxes). Your fellow weight lifters (aka Thrift Shop Volunteers) are great motivators! They will cheer you on and delight at your progress! Runners: Stock shelves, display merchandise creatively. Electrical Testers: Test and price electrical and electronic items. Cashiers: If you have experience on cash please let us know. Able bodied volunteers 16+ are needed for weekdays & weekends. Right now we are particularly in need of volunteers on Saturdays. Flexible shifts are available. For more information contact Ellen Johnston at egjohnston@eastlink.ca

Delta schools may face a full-scale strike before the end of this school year. The troubling new development in the ongoing heated contract battle between government and teachers came Wednesday following a Labour Relations Board ruling against the B.C. Teachers’ Federation. The board ruled in favour of the employer and backed the 10 per cent wage cut to teachers who participated in rotating strikes over the past two weeks. In response to teachers launching the strikes, the B.C. Public School Employers’ Association, the body negotiating on behalf of government, fired back with the partial lockout and a pay cut, a move the BCTF described as contradictory, confusing and chaotic. Following the release of the LRB decision, BCTF president Jim Iker announced rotating strikes would likely continue next week, meaning Delta schools would be shut down for another day for the third

week in a row. Local schools were closed on Monday as well as on Wednesday of last week. The rotating strike is expected to hit Delta on Thursday of next week. Things could escalate
as teachers will vote next Monday and Tuesday on ramping up their job action to a full-scale strike, which would occur the following week. Iker lamented the government’s lack of movement, despite teachers lowering
their salary demand. “They have not moved on the salary offer tabled back in April. And to date, they have not put a single dollar onto the bargaining table to ensure class size limits, class composition guarantees and minimum levels of
Student walkout fizzles at local high schools BY

A province-wide student walkout this week to protest the ongoing contract battle between government and teachers saw only a few in South Delta participate. Word spread this week through social media promoting the student action planned for Wednesday morning. Less than 20 students ended up walking out at Delta Secondary in Ladner, while nothing took place at South Delta Secondary in Tsawwassen. Those who did take
part at DSS, some holding small, hastily made signs, were told by the principal to remain on school grounds, and they complied. The most vocal of the group, Gillian Gordon, said most students support the teachers and the difficulties they face when it comes to class size and composition. “If we don’t support our teachers, our education will just go down the toilet,” said Gordon. She said there was interest among the school population to take part in the walkout but most didn’t want to miss any more

specialist teachers into the collective agreement,” he said. “Their current offer would see teachers take two more years of zeros after just coming off two years of legislated zeros. Teachers last got a raise in July 2010.” Saying there was still time for government to avert a full-blown strike, Iker reiterated that teachers don’t take job action lightly. Delta Teachers’ Association president Paul Steer said it doesn’t have to come to a strike and, even now, there is still the ability to negotiate rather than fight. In response to the BCTF’s possible escalation of job action, Education Minister Peter Fassbender said it doesn’t change the government’s resolve to get an agreement by the end of June. He said a full-scale strike is only going to keep more students out of their classrooms, create more disruption for parents, while teachers and support workers will lose even more in wages.

school following a couple of days already lost to rotating strikes. Jamie Wells said several of her classes have multiple students with special needs, including one with seven, while most classes are at 30 or more pupils. It was reported that students who participated in walkouts in other districts across the province didn’t support either side in the dispute, saying they are caught in the middle and simply want a settlement reached. McQuade remembered as education advocate
Longtime Delta teacher also served as BCTF president BY
SANDOR GYARMATI
sgyarmati@delta-optimist.com
Alice McQuade, a longtime Delta teacher and former president of the B.C. Teachers’ Federation, has passed away after a long battle with cancer. A tireless advocate for public education, McQuade retired in 2012 after teaching for many years in the Delta school system, including at North Delta Secondary. Her 35 years in education also saw her serve as president of the Delta Teachers’ Association and on the council of the B.C. College of Teachers. Early in her teaching years, McQuade became involved with the DTA, eventually serving as president from 1987 to 1992. She served nine years on the BCTF’s executive committee, including three as president, where she was involved in negotiations for important provisions for teachers. It’s been said that she felt her most significant achievement for teachers and students was the signing of the first provincial collective agreement.
When he announced McQuade’s retirement, current DTA president Paul Steer stated on his Facebook page, “Alice is a teachers’ teacher, whose dedication to, and support of, the union has been unstinting. Her support of the Delta Teachers’ Association and the British Columbia Teachers’ Federation has only been exceeded by her absolute dedication to her many, many students over the years.” McQuade was the only recent past president of the BCTF to return to the classroom, working with students as well as volunteering with the union until retirement. The Delta school district described her as “a mentor to teachers, young and old. She embraced many student teachers and promoted the notion of professionalism and service to others. She had no difficulty establishing high standards, and encouraged others to attain those same standards. She spent countless hours helping her teacher colleagues with teaching, personal and union issues.” At last year’s BCTF

annual general meeting, McQuade received the G.A Fergusson Memorial Award, given to teachers who have made an outstanding contribution to education. Steer said McQuade initiated the North Delta Secondary student leadership program, the Focus Group, which has, over the years, supported and encouraged students to reach their full potential. “It has always been important to Alice that students learn the power of choosing to become engaged and involved, not only in pursuit of their own education, but also in society,” he said. A memorial service will be held at the North Delta Secondary theatre on Sunday, June 22 at 1 p.m.
Recycling bins set on fire in Tsawwassen Delta police and fire departments were busy earlier this week after a firebug targeted the recycling bins in one Tsawwassen neighbourhood. Delta police spokesperson Sgt. Sarah Swallow said officers were called to the 5600-block of 10A Avenue at around 2 a.m. Monday after unknown suspects set the recycling bins on fire at several homes in the neigh-
bourhood. Swallow said the suspects had walked a loop around the 5600-block of 10A, 10 and 9A avenues lighting random recycling boxes on fire. One resident in the area said there were upwards of 15 fires set in the neighbourhood. Swallow said with schools closed on Monday due to the ongoing rotating
strike by teachers, officers were dealing with a lot of youth-related incidents the night before. She said officers were unable to track down any suspects, and there were no witnesses. She added that it didn’t appear the suspects were targeting a specific house. “It wasn’t taken as anything more than a prank,” she said.

Local family trying to keep killer in prison Ennis’ parole hearing will see Bodens head to Alberta BY

jkerr@delta-optimist.com
A Tsawwassen family is once again preparing to head to Alberta in an attempt to ensure the man convicted of murdering six members of their family stays behind bars. Shelley Boden and several members of her family will be traveling to Bowden, Alberta, just south of Red Deer, for another parole hearing for David Ennis. Ennis, who was known as David Shearing at the time of the murders but has since changed his name, has been behind bars since the early 1980s after admitting to killing the family, which was on a camping trip in Wells Gray Park in August 1982. He pleaded guilty almost two years after the slayings and was sentenced to life in prison for 25 years. Ennis stalked the family
before shooting Boden’s aunt and uncle, Bob and Jackie Johnson, and Jackie Johnson’s parents, George and Edith Bentley. He kept the Johnsons’ two daughters, Janet, 13, and Karen, 11, alive for several days and sexually assaulted the two girls before killing them as well. He then put all six bodies in the family’s car and set it on fire on a remote logging road. This is the third time Boden and her family have made the trek to Alberta in an effort to ensure Ennis is never released. He was first denied parole in 2008 and again in 2012. This time he has applied for day parole. “The more that we go shows we care that he doesn’t get out,” Boden said, adding many family members will read victim impact statements. Boden said she’s upset
the family has to attend another hearing just two years after the last one, adding it forces members to relive the nightmare of the murders. “We don’t want him out,” she said. “This time I’m pissed off.” The parole hearing isn’t until Sept. 4, but the family has started an online petition in the fight to keep Ennis in prison. The petition, which has more than 8,700 signatures, is available by searching David Ennis at www. change.org. The petition must be signed by June 15. Boden said the family is also urging people to write letters to the parole board. Letters, which must be received by July 1, can be sent to: Parole Board of Canada, Prairies Region, Scotia Place, Scotia 2, Suite 401, 10060 Jasper Avenue, NW, Edmonton, Alberta, T5J 3R8

TED MURPHY
MURPHY’S LAW Now that the Southlands saga is coming to a merciful conclusion, you’d think the opportunities to voice displeasure with the contentious development project would soon disappear. Fear not, as I suspect the project being undertaken by the Century Group on Tsawwassen’s most famous piece of real estate will provide fodder for letter writers for years to come. While approvals are finalized over the next little while, it’s likely the letters will lean toward condescending politicians ignoring the public’s wishes along with a smattering of concerns over climate change and building on a flood plain. Once work actually begins on the site, it’s an absolute certainty there will be complaints over dump trucks rumbling through town. Noise, dust, wear and tear on roads, rock chips on windshields, waits at traffic lights... pick your irritant and be sure to let everyone know. When drainage and irrigation improvements have been made and farming begins in earnest, it will set the stage for that old chestnut of rural-urban conflict: farm smells. Fertilizers and pungent crops will invariably draw the ire of neighbours, just as they have in Beach Grove, East Ladner and wherever farms abut residences. Construction of the housing will bring with it complaints over noise and traffic along with laments about the rising structures being a blight on the landscape. There will undoubtedly be concerns voiced over the scope and density of the project and how it will alter the character of the community, to say nothing of it obscuring views and covering arable land. Heck, I imagine we’ll even hear worries that the new pathways running through the property are bringing too many people to Centennial Beach, to the point where regulars are having trouble finding a log of their own. Yes, the Southlands is the issue that keeps on giving — at least if you’re in the business of moderating public discourse. It would be nice if the acrimony that characterizes this strategically placed piece of land disappeared now that a decision has finally been made, but something tells me that’s probably asking too much. Emotions run high when it comes to the Southlands and personal viewpoints are often deeply rooted, so it’s not like some folks will be able to just flip a switch. That means the angst that has permeated the community will remain for some time — and you can rest assured the negative letters will continue to flow.
Engaging in war of words isn’t way to produce desired result DOUG HUSBAND
COMMUNITY COMMENT “War of words heats up.” It’s a headline that can be found in any newspaper at the outset of labour negotiations. This oft-used phrase also applies to dialogue between nations, seemingly part of their negotiation strategy. In labour disputes, so often one of the grieved parties runs off to a news conference to explain their side of the issue, hoping to garner public support. I have a background of some 20 years in the dispute resolution field and I question the value of these tiresome tactics. Attack ads fill prime time TV at great expense but to what end? Ads and press conferences generated by the government or unions representing teachers and nurses attempt to curry public favour. It matters little who initiates the process, provincial ministries or the unions. It doesn’t seem to matter which provincial party has gover-
nance responsibility, the NDP periodically or the B.C. Liberals, the proverbial union whipping post. These unions put the patient and the student out front of their “principled” outrage. Let’s be clear: It’s always about the money, whether it’s class size, benefits, signing bonuses or annual increases. I also want to make clear that my family has a long history in the education field and teachers deserve to be dealt with fairly at the bargaining table. We’ve all had need for health care and the first line of service is generally a wellqualified nurse, for which we are thankful. What I question is the value of tactics of confrontation elicited through the media leading up to and during negotiations. It appears the ramp up of public discourse is to sway public opinion affecting voting trends at election time. The labour movement has ties to the NDP, but both provincial parties have a balanced approach when it comes to health and education, the two largest ministries. And why is that? As stated by many, including you and me, as taxpayers we are the “purse” paying for these services. Tax and debt bring down governments and an increase in corporate tax affects employment. In the 27 years since teachers

were granted the right to strike by legislation of the Social Credit government, there have been in excess of 50 strikes (albeit mini in nature), three lockouts, three “legislated” contracts and two — only two — negotiated contracts. If any parallels can be drawn, a Crown corporation I am familiar with has had two strikes in 40 years. It’s no coincidence teachers are escalating rotating strikes and cutting back services approaching the end of the school term and provincial exam time. Students and parents become a pawn in the process. The lack of trust is rampant on both sides. Negotiations should occur under the principles of privacy and confidentiality. Bargaining should be free of time constraints. Ultimatums given on large issues with a short window of opportunity are tactics time tested to fail. There are some very good labour practitioners when meeting under terms of binding agreement who could reach an agreement without all the rhetoric and expense generated in the public forum. We need stability and affordability in the delivery of health and educational services. Teachers, nurses and the taxpayer deserve nothing less. And a good night to you, Denise.

Wake up to the potential dangers of thermal coal Editor: The pro-coal exporters, along with Port Metro Vancouver, would have us all believe that thermal coal is as safe to handle as its metallurgical coal cousin. I think not! The metallurgical coal historically mined along the Rock Mountain border between B.C. and Alberta is a clean burning, low sulphur product used primarily in the steel industry. Metallurgical coal does not present a major pollution problem and can be considered a low-emission, clean-burning product when treated with high efficiency scrubbers and preceptors as typically used in today’s modern steel industry. Thermal coal is a different animal. The U.S. thermal coal proposal from Fraser Surrey Docks is a
highly polluting product for primary use in coal-fired power generation plants. Transporting this product through Canada would expose us all to the accumulative toxic dust from shipping via rail, barge and storing in stockpiles at Fraser Surrey Docks on the Fraser River and on Texada Island. Babies and the elderly are the most vulnerable to terminal respiratory illnesses. Unless we are a Third World country, Canada has no business shipping this carcinogenic product to Asia. No port in the U.S. will allow the export of thermal coal so the American coal industry looks to Canada as its wildcat exporter. Port Metro Vancouver has no problem with it and
is eager to oblige. We already know the facts about this material and the carcinogenic effects from both transporting and burning it for the power generating industry. The citizens of Delta, Greater Vancouver and the global community need to take action to stop the madness. Our elected officials at all levels of government need to get involved and stop this proposal before the port applies its rubber stamp of approval. Since Port Metro Vancouver is federally-regulated authority, be sure to ask your member of Parliament to get involved. Wake up, people, before it’s too late. Our children and our grandchildren are depending on us. Don Paulsen
Alarmed by lost trees in East Ladner
Editor: For some time now I have been alarmed at the disappearance of trees around the North 40 dog park and the Boundary Bay Airport lands. First the hawthorns along the blueberry field on Ladner Trunk Road, then the Lombardy poplars beside the nursery at the corner of Ladner Trunk and 72nd Street, but this week the most depressing of all was seeing the trees coming down along the rest of 72nd from Ladner Trunk south to the railway tracks. For years, my family, the Delta Naturalists (to which I belong) and many other families and groups have enjoyed the tranquility and nature of the airport lands. The trees provided nests
for raptors and other birds as well as a wind break for the fields, acting as a shield from the traffic on 72nd Street. What is being done will alter the ecology of the area. I realize the damage is done, or will be by the end of the week, and that it is too late to stop the destruction. Having talked to the engineering department at municipal hall, I was informed the work is being done to “enhance irrigation for the farms south of Ladner Trunk” and that the ditches need to be widened and that experts were hired to do “environmental assessment.” I don’t know of any of my naturalist/birder friends who are experts and have many years of experience
,
birding the North 40 who were consulted. I think my problem with how this project was done was that I, nor anyone I know, was remotely aware it was planned and, therefore, had no opportunity to speak against it. It’s of major concern to the municipality when one wishes to remove a single tree from their private property but what steps have been taken to gain approval for the removal of dozens of environmentally important trees along 72nd Street? Again, it’s too late for the North 40 unless there are other plans we don’t know about, but surely the process in the future should be a little more open and transparent. Roger Meyer
Column reminds us to appreciate what moms do
Editor: Re: Lines on a senior’s face are a roadmap of life well lived, Community Comment, June 4 I was touched to read Corry Anderson-Fennell’s column, which was so very
well written and so true. The younger generations have no idea what we seniors have gone through, especially if we lived during the depression in England and the Second World War with all the bombings and
rationings. I had one of the best mothers in the world, but didn’t appreciate her or tell her. So thank you, Corry, for reminding us. Joan Hetherington
Officers and paramedics praised for their compassion Editor: I want to express my sincere and heartfelt thanks to all the constables of the Delta Police Department for the friendly, professional
and compassionate help extended to me to attend to the needs of my husband. I also want to thank the constables for contacting the paramedics who were
wonderful too. The only word to describe our constables? It’s supercalifragilisticexpialidocious! Gail May

Gladys Cargin left legacy in Delta as food columnist and volunteer BY

The community lost a passionate volunteer who was always willing to lend a hand with the passing of Gladys Cargin this week. Cargin, who was just over a month shy of her 89th birthday, died Monday at Royal Columbian Hospital. She had been transferred there from Delta Hospital, where she had been for the last month, to undergo a heart procedure. “She had been having failing health for some time but had been able to cope,” said daughter Andrea Carr, one of Cargin’s four children. Born in England in 1925, Cargin and her husband Norman moved to Canada in 1967. After initially settling in Ontario, they moved west to Surrey and then finally found a home in Tsawwassen. Carr said her mother became well known in the community, both for her volunteer work and for her regular cooking column that ran in the Optimist and the South Delta Today for about a decade in the 1990s. “When we went for a walk, we could not go for more than a block without someone stopping her to ask for a recipe,” Carr said. However, Cargin’s true passion was helping people. “She was always trying to help people... she always had a story at the end of the day about someone she helped,” Carr said. She taught many people, free of charge, how to cook and bake over the years and became the live-in cook for Abbeyfield House at St. David’s Church in Tsawwassen.

Anna Erickson and Mike Alioto started Lady Bug’z Lifestyle Assistant two years ago to provide a wide range of services to local seniors.
Lady Bug’z helps seniors maintain independence
If it needs to be done, Lady Bug’z Lifestyle Assistant can do it. “Anything that you need, we’ll do,” says Anna Erickson, who started Lady Bug’z with partner Mike Alioto two years ago. The initial aim of the business was to help local seniors be able to live independently longer, as well as make the transition into a care home. “We try to keep our seniors in our community living independently,” Erickson says. From care aides and housekeeping to organization, help with running errands or simple companionship, Lady Bug’z Lifestyle Assistant offers a
variety of services aimed at helping seniors stay comfortable and safe at home as long as possible.
The help is not just for seniors, however, as the couple says Lady Bug’z services are available to anyone who needs a hand. In addition to care aides, housekeeping and organization, and personal assistant services, Lady Bug’z offers yard work and handyman services, home check while you’re away and even help with season preparations, such as decorating for major holidays. It can also
take care of vacation and party planning, gardening and has an arsenal of experts in everything from plumbing to a notary public available. Erickson says she came up with the idea for the business while working at The Waterford seniors’ facility in Tsawwassen. “The thing that I heard the most was how difficult it was for some seniors to live on their own and how hard it was to transition.” For more information and a full list of Lady Bug’z services, visit www.ladybugzbiz.com. Call 778-2424558 for general enquiries or 604-306-0599 for questions about maintenance services.

Delta’s Relay For Life to run throughout the night
Delta’s annual Relay For Life takes place tomorrow at North Delta Secondary. The Canadian Cancer Society fundraiser is a non-competitive event that involves teams of up to 15 participants who take turns

at 4 p.m. The opening ceremonies begin with a Survivors’ Victory Lap that’s scheduled for 6 p.m. Luminaries will be lit during a moving ceremony at 10:30 p.m.
Their light pays tribute to loved ones and provides motivation and encouragement to participants who keep walking all night long. Throughout the event, there will be performances by local talent.

On the Water Boating and Marine Feature
ARE YOU AND YOUR BOAT READY FOR THE SEASON? By John Gullick- Canadian Safe Boating Council
Every year thousands of boaters go out on the water without giving any thought to how prepared either they or their boats are for the season ahead. Personal preparation involves ensuring you have on-hand your Pleasure Craft Operator Card, up to date nautical charts, a pre-departure checklist and have obtained a reliable marine weather forecast. When it comes to vessel preparedness, one of the first things to ensure is that your boat and engine(s) are mechanically sound. Remember that, throughout most of Canada, boats have been in storage for a number of months over the winter and may not operate as efficiently as they did last season. Make sure that you follow the recommended maintenance schedule found in your boat’s owner’s manual. The Canadian government also mandates that specific safety equipment be carried on board. This equipment can be of great benefit and can mean the difference between a great day out on the water and a potential disaster. The Canadian Safe Boating Council and Smartboater.ca want to remind Canadians to review their safe boating check list before heading out onto the water. Required items vary depending on boat length but the list below highlights the things that, at minimum, need be carried on board, in good working condition and within reach each time you go out: Compulsory Items required on a typical vessel 6 meters or less in length: • The vessels license or registration if powered by a motor of 7.5 kw (10 hp) or more • A Canadian approved flotation device (PFD) in good repair and of appropriate size for every person on board • Fire extinguisher (depending on type of engine, gas tank or cooking appliances on board) • Watertight flashlight or pyrotechnic distress signal requirements (flares) • Sound signaling device • Buoyant heaving line (minimum 15 meters in length) • Paddle or anchor with at least 15 meters of rode and /or chain • Re-boarding device • Bailer or manual water pump • Navigation lights Other items to check: • Secure batteries • Passive ventilation that allows air to flow through below decks • Exhaust fan or bilge blower that removes dangerous vapours The River House Marina, Restaurant & Pub • Flame arrester and heat would like to thank you for your support and patronage. shielding for inboard engines • Up-to-date charts Please drop in by boat, we have guest parking! • Magnetic compass • Radar reflector Consider requesting a Recreational Vessel Courtesy Check. This is a totally voluntary service and is conducted without penalty if a deficiency is found. You will simply be advised of the requirement and a re-inspection will be offered when you have added these items. Canadian Power & Sail Squadrons are currently the only nongovernmental national source for this programme. They will inspect vessels that are in or out of the water. They can tell you what is required and give you specific information about each item, what items are best for your vessel and boating conditions and even how to properly use certain items or what additional training might be available. Volunteers can also talk to you about PFDs, Sail Plans, Alcoholic Beverage Consumption while on board, Sewage Disposal and Pre

The power of ‘with’ With. It seems like such an innocuous word until it becomes one of the foundation concepts of a worldwide movement. It’s a word that has played a significant part in changing societal attitudes while gently, yet persistently, calling people to come along side people with a disability. It is a word that speaks of mutuality and friendship. Fifty years ago Jean Vanier opened the door of his modest home in the village of Troly-Breuil, France, to welcome two men from a local institution to live with him. It was the beginning of a journey known as L’Arche that now has established 146 communities in 46 countries around the world. Our modern societies all too easily fall into the trap of “doing for” those we see as not capable. “Doing for”
imposes a power imbalance into our relationships. It tends to question the value and worth of the other. Vanier has always spoken of the power of “being with” that recognizes the sharing of the giftedness of every person. Drawing from an article in the Toronto Star on June 1, this idea of doing things “with” instead of “for” people with disabilities is the core of a L’Arche campaign (www.discoverwith.ca) in Canadian magazines and transit billboards. The ads show two people, one with and one without a disability, sharing the ordinary pleasures of life — riding bikes, making dinner, having a drink. “With makes all the difference,” the ad reads. “When people of differing abilities spend time with one another, they create a better world.”

Good eats at Hustle & Heart Dougie Dog Diner Truck one of several food options at hospital event BY
SANDOR GYARMATI
sgyarmati@delta-optimist.com
Tomorrow’s Hustle & Heart Block Party and Walkathon at Delta Hospital will feature several delectable eating options. One of those is courtesy of a colourful and enthusiastic entrepreneur whose healthy take on gourmet hotdogs drew praise from the Dragon’s Den. Dougie Luv will have one of his three food trucks, a Dougie Dog Diner Truck, dishing out all natural, no preservative hot dogs, a dog Luv says foodies will be able to tell the difference from regular street fair dogs. Luv moved into the gourmet food truck business after opening the first hotdog restaurant in B.C., a 650-square-foot establishment in Vancouver’s entertainment district. Having good sales but losing money in its first year,
Luv’s tweaks to the operation saw increased sales, a requirement from the often harsh tycoons on CBC’s Dragon’s Den, where Luv sought investors two years ago. Luv told the Dragons he spent eight weeks on the road in Los Angeles doing research, which entailed, of course, eating plenty of hotdogs. The Dragons, including the always-opinionated Kevin O’Leary, enjoyed his hotdogs and concept, but were reluctant to invest until he could bring his sales higher. Luv would appear in a follow-up episode of the Dragon’s Den, eventually getting a deal done thanks to getting into the gourmet food truck business, which has become more popular in recent years. He has since closed the restaurant. “With the recession around the world and this generation the way it is,

All proceeds will support the Results: Healthy and Growing campaign to expand the medical imaging and laboratory facilities at the hospital. The Block Party will once again include a walkathon where participants are encouraged to collect pledges. It will also feature many family-friendly activities such as pony rides, a petting zoo, face painting, a Teddy Bear Clinic, dunk tank, information booths and test drives for charity. Bandfest celebrates 10 years BY
T
BRIAN ELLIS
Optimist contributor
he Ladner Bandfest will be celebrating its 10th anniversary this weekend with two days of live music in Memorial Park. To put the icing on this special birthday musical extravaganza, Bandfest organizers are delighted to have the Royal Canadian Navy’s renowned Naden Band play at the conclusion of Sunday’s performances, starting at 5:30 p.m. Legendary band leader Dal Richards is also scheduled to make an appearance on Sunday. Ladner Bandfest has truly become an international event, with 22 bands travelling from various parts of the Lower Mainland, Vancouver Island, Washington state and even one from the Hawaiian island of Maui. Each band will perform a 40-minute set on one of two stages set up in the park. Performances begin at 10 a.m. and run throughout the day. The brainchild of Delta Music Makers music director Curt Jantzen, Ladner Bandfest introduces audiences to a variety of bands and brings together musicians from far afield who would otherwise not have an opportunity to hear one another’s performances in such a unique setting. Since its inception, the Bandfest has been keenly supported by Mayor Lois Jackson, the Corporation of Delta, Delta South MLA Vicki Huntington and a myriad of local businesses and organizations. Jantzen was the recipient of a Delta Chamber of Commerce award in 2011 and a long-term contribution award from Delta last year for his work with both Ladner Bandfest and the Music Makers. There is no admission fee for Bandfest, although if you wish to make a financial contribution, there will be strategically located donation boxes. Those planning to attend are asked to bring along folding chairs and sun hats. Refreshments will be available on site from the TOOBs, who are famous for their curly fries.

This week I answer a reader’s question: Q. Our camellia is developing a black powdery substance on its leaves. This rubs off but is even discolouring the side of the house and the neighbouring rhododendron. The plant doesn’t seem to be suffering too much, but it’s really become unsightly. Any suggestions? A. Sooty Mold is very common with camellias. The two most likely causes are aphids or scale insects. All these are sap-suckers that excrete a sweet substance that coats the leaves and attracts ants that eat this honeydew. Fungi are also attracted and that’s what gives the honeydew its
sooty colour. You’ll need to check whether ants are crawling up the trunk of your camellia and your rhododendron. If they are, it’s important to stop them. As long as the ants can get up there, your problems will continue. Garden centres sell insect-trappping substances such as Tanglefoot. These sticky products should be smeared on a plastic or cloth band that can be fastened around the trunks of both shrubs. It should be put on so it can be removed and discarded when necessary. All sap-sucking insects seek out shrubs with lots of tender green growth. High-nitrogen fertilizers encourage this. Balanced, slow-release fertilizers or compost is a better choice. Checking for eggs on the underside of the leaves is also helpful in case you have scale insects, not aphids. Or you could have

both. If sunlight and air circulation are blocked, sooty mold is more likely to attack. Sometimes the camellia has very dense growth, or perhaps surrounding trees are hogging the light. Anyway, it helps to prune off the worst infected branches. Spraying will penetrate better and so will air and sunlight. If the bush is quite small, you could pick off the most badly infected leaves. Blasts of water can dislodge many of the aphids. For generally cleaning the bush somewhat, a tablespoon of Neem oil in a gallon of water is useful. To cut off the next generation of scale, try dormant oil sprays. These can smother scale eggs. Anne Marrison is happy to answer garden questions. Send them to amarrison@ shaw.ca. Songwriter’s Café returns
Ross Douglas will be the featured performer at tomorrow’s Songwriter’s Café at St. David’s Anglican Church in Tsawwassen. Douglas plans on presenting an eclectic set of original songs replete with abundant “folkiness,” wit and humour delivered with charm and gusto, he says in an email to the Optimist.
He’ll be playing guitar, piano, ukulele and maybe some mandolin. Douglas, who splits his time between Ladner and Point Roberts, produced a compilation, 12 Songs 115 Countries, last year from his albums that have been proven to be popular online around the world. This marks the second Songwriter’s

Critical stretch for Jr. Islanders
Delta looks to rebound from lopisided loss to Salmonbellies when Adanacs visit Saturday night BY
MARK BOOTH
mbooth@delta-optimist.com
It was hardly the way the Delta Islanders were hoping to begin a pivotal stretch of their season. The New West Salmonbellies erased a 32 first period deficit with 12 unanswered goals and thumped the Islanders 14-4 on Tuesday night at historic Queen’s Park Arena. The loss leaves Delta with an 8-5 record and all but eliminates their chances of reeling in the Salmonbellies who improved to 9-1. The task doesn’t get any easier Saturday when the Coquitlam Adanacs (9-11) visit Sungod Arena at 7:30 p.m. The Islanders also face the fourth place Victoria Shamrocks (5-4-1) on Sunday, then travel to Coquitlam next Wednesday. The critical run concludes with New West at Sungod on June 14. The Islanders will then have just four games remaining. What should not be forgotten is the Islanders hovering in a similar position a year ago but believed the gap between themselves and the contenders was too significant and traded top scorers Cody Nass and Eli McLaughlin to New West for prospects and draft
picks. The deal stipulated the playing rights for both reverted back to Delta this season. “If they want us to make deals to bring in guys to help for a playoff run then it’s time to show me (what they are capable of),” said assistant general manager and head coach Greg Rennie. “If not, then we can go the other direction too. “Either way I promise you I will be the most busiest guy at the deadline.” Rennie believes the Islanders are among the league’s most talented teams but also concedes there are missing ingredients too. He would like to see more experience in his line-up and needs some of his offensive players to step up. That was none more evident than on Tuesday when the Islanders went over 40 minutes without a goal. Meanwhile, the Salmonbellies were firing on all cylinders to easily avenge its only loss of the season last month at Sungod. Sniper Josh Byrne made a significant impact in his season debut with five goals. “We learned a lot of lessons and one of them is just how good New West is when they are at full strength. In my mind, they are the team to beat,” added Rennie. “That said, we need

Reece Callies and the Delta Islanders are at a critical juncture of the regular season in the B.C. Junior “A” Lacrosse League. to move on and not dwell on it too much with another big game on Saturday.” The Islanders were coming off weekend wins
over Port Coquitlam (109) and Burnaby (11-6). McLaughlin led the way against the Lakers with eight points, including four
goals. Nass added six points with two goals, while Evan Messenger also scored twice. Chase Fraser had seven assists.
“We put in so much effort, and we haven’t had much time together because we’ve all just come back from our pro season,” explained Kyla Richey of Roberts Creek. “We worked so hard in the last two and a half weeks we had together. It’s so great to have our ticket to Italy. We’re back and our level of play was raised.” After starring for the South Delta Sun Devils, Charuk earned a full-ride scholarship to the
University of Houston. She was named first team all-conference in her junior and senior seasons with Cougars. More recently, the 25-yearold has been playing professionally in Europe. The World Championships are slated for Sept. 23 to Oct. 4. in Italy. Canada also captured the men’s qualifying tournament, marking the first time both national teams were able to earn berth on home soil.

Vanessa Nordin and the Delta Falcons Storm defeated the Richmond Owls 3-0 in Greater Vancouver Junior Field Hockey League U18 action last Sunday at Minoru Park.
Red Sox win all-Ladner final at Newton Midget tournament Ladner teams dominated the recent Newton Minor Baseball Ross Midget AA Tournament, including an all Ladner championship game with the Red Sox slipping past the Black Sox 7-6. All three local teams finished first in their roundrobin groups, with the Blue Jays joining their rivals as tournament contenders. The Red Sox came out strong, allowing only four runs in three games, to reach the semi-finals. The entire team contributed to a sound defensive effort with clutch plays from all the players throughout the weekend. Strong pitching came from Bhavan Dhaliwal (MVP), Isaac Embree (MVP), Devin Basi (MVP), Justin MacKenzie and Daelen Magcalas
Ladner Red Sox (MVP), while stellar fielding was provided by Colton Moubert, David Copeland, Drake Carruthers, Kyle Clancy, Nick Carlson, Stuart Hodgins (MVP) and Taylor Adamson. The Red Sox bats were inconsistent in the semifinals against host Newton Athletics but solid defense and great base running resulted in a 7-6 win. The
Black Sox got past the Blue Jays in the other final four match-up. Unavailable for the tournament were Eric and Jackson Goodman. The Red Sox coaching staff includes: Geoff Moubert, Bruce Hodgins, Sean Clancy and Tyler Honigman. The team is looking forward to the upcoming league play downs and playoffs.
Mann named to B.C. Sevens team
Tsawwassen’s Michael Mann is a member of the B.C. Elite Youth Sevens rugby team that leaves for Germany Monday for the Heidelberg Junior International Sevens, a competition featuring representation from Europe, Africa and North America. After a lengthy selection process that included trials in both Victoria and the Lower Mainland, head coach Shane Thompson selected 11 players to represent the province. Thompson has toured to Germany in previous years with invitational touring side Dog River Howlers and knows his players will be ready for the stiff competition they face when they arrive in Heidelberg. “This is a great tournament that has included junior national teams from
Romania and Kenya as well as provincial teams from across Germany,” Thompson said. “The strongest team in recent years is always the French Toulouse Junior Academy.” Mann, who is also a standout football player, plays club rugby for the Brit Lions. Designed to develop young athletes who will be best qualified to represent Canada with distinction at future Olympic Games and Rugby World Cup tournaments, the BCEY7’s has previously toured to Vegas and Hong Kong. This will be the first European tour in the program’s history. The tour itinerary includes sightseeing around the city, including a tour of the renowned Heidelberg Castle and River Cruise. The tournament is set for June 1415 at the Fritz Grunebaum Sportsplex.
