Trucks given twice over in annual blitz BY
JESSICA KERR
jkerr@delta-optimist.com
Seventy-five officers from a variety of agencies were out on Delta roads this week to inspect commercial vehicles in the Delta Police Department’s annual blitz. Cole Delisle, acting regional manager with the Ministry of Transportation’s Commercial Vehicle Safety and Enforcement Branch, said each truck that passed through one of the eight sites was given a preliminary visual inspection. From there, any that looked like they could have a problem were put through a second, more thorough inspection. Delisle said the most common issues include defective brakes, insecure loads and defects to the suspension, although he added they do see a lot of “quality trucks” on the road. Results of the bltiz will be available next week. June 20, 2014 The Delta Optimist B1

Paterson Park is a unique opportunity in Metro Vancouver to have a mini-village that supports a sustainable, affordable, supportive and diverse community. That’s according to the Delta Seniors’ Planning Team, which outlined its general vision for the former harness track at the entrance to Ladner at a Delta council workshop Monday. The planning team held a series of community meetings recently to gather input on the types of services and housing that could be built at the Ladner site. The ideas were gathered to form a series of recommendations the planning teams insists are do-able, as long as council has the political will to support the innovative scheme. “The Corporation of Delta has a unique opportunity to lead in the development of this innovative community. We were inspired by the forums and we hope you will be too. The ball is in your court,” said ML Burke of the planning team. The team’s vision includes an aging in place, walkable community that would have a variety of low-cost housing and amenities for seniors and aging baby boomers, as well as a retail component.

partners for its vision. Monday’s meeting wrapped up with council members agreeing they needed more information from staff. Mayor Lois Jackson said the ideas put forward were intriguing but there’s always the question of how to pay for it. Responding to that comment in a followup letter the next day, Burke said, “As in most projects, developers will cost out their part of it, raise the funds to build it and recoup their investment plus their profit when they sell. For Paterson Park, we know this will involve many partnerships with both non-profit and for-profit developers, PHOTO BY SANDOR GYARMATI which we are ready to Members of the Delta Seniors’ Planning Team met with Delta council this week to discuss a vision for begin exploring once Paterson Park. we have your support.” One of the concepts that The vision also includes Over a year ago, A myriad of ideas on could be integrated is multi- keeping the current oval Kwantlen announced plans how to develop Paterson ple pods of affordable hous- as a walking/fitness track, to sell its part of the park, Park have come up over ing, containing common building a seniors’ centre to but university president and the years since sulky racing living areas, for seniors and replace the McKee Centre, vice-chancellor Alan Davis ceased in the late 1960s, but students. having a couple of small recently told the Delta the site still remains empty Another idea is to have a playgrounds as well as Chamber of Commerce that today. “memory care village” for incorporating a family place some sort of educational The citizen’ group, dementia patients requiror daycare. centre could be built there. Delta wasn’t completely left out of an ambitious transit plan announced last week by the region’s mayors, but it likely won’t matter if there’s no money to pay for it. The Metro Vancouver mayors’ transportation committee say their 10-year investment plan, part of an overall 30-year vision, is desperately needed to handle another million people, as well as potentially three million more automobile trips per day, in the region by 2041. The committee is proposing a $7.5-billion expansion that includes replacing the Pattullo Bridge,
27 kilometres of light rail through Surrey and Langley as well as extending the Millennium Line. A number of other improvements are listed, but nothing that can be considered major for South Delta, as well as North Delta, which has a provision in its recently completed area plan for light rail transit. The mayors’ pitch to pay for the plan involves a package that includes an allocation of $250 million from the existing B.C. carbon tax, but Transportation Minister Todd Stone was quick to respond that the provincial government won’t hand over its carbon tax dollars to TransLink. Noting she supports some aspects of the plan,

A pair of light rail lines south of the Fraser River are included in a new $7.5-billion transportation plan. including light rail through Surrey, Delta Mayor Lois Jackson said she was disappointed the committee included only one representative from south of the Fraser in Surrey Mayor Dianne Watts, even though that’s where most of the population growth will be taking place.
“They did come up with, certainly, a comprehensive plan, trying to give something to everyone, particularly Vancouver and Surrey who have the most (Metro Vancouver board of directors) votes,” Jackson told the Optimist this week. “Analyzing what they have offered in terms of
Delta, there were two or three things in the Ladner/ Tsawwassen relative to stops and stations, but there was no detail. We have made mention before about park-and-ride and the new (SFPR) freeway and that could be something on their horizon,” she said. While Scott Road could potentially have a B-Line bus if the full plan is carried out, there was no mention of Delta’s preference for light rail, noted Jackson. “I think whatever they do for Surrey will be helping us but, nonetheless, there’s not an awful lot there for us that seems apparent.” Jackson said a new committee will look at a referendum question for the public.

Tsawwassen resident Peter Shen wanted to publicly thank four Delta police officers this week and took his message to the lawn outside police headquarters in Ladner. Shen said he had dealings with the four officers, constables Gurpreet Bains, Vince Neudorf, Kelly Seib and Steve Strandt, over the last few years and in each case appreciated how the officers handled the situation. He said he wanted to show his gratitude, thanks and support to the four officers.
Vandals struck again in South Delta over the weekend. Sometime on Saturday night, someone broke the limbs off young trees along 54A Street between Ladner Trunk Road and 47A Avenue. It was reported to Delta police Sunday morning. Sgt. Sarah Swallow said there was no evidence left behind and no one in the neighbourhood heard or saw anything overnight.
“This is just another example of wanton, reckless destruction of property that is so frustrating to residents and police,” she said. “In this case, there is no other purpose for this other than sheer vandalism.” Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call Delta police at 604946-4411. Earlier this month, vandals set several small fires in a Tsawwassen neighbourhood, destroying recycling bins, garbage cans, and damaging landscaping and driveways.
Limbs were broken off young trees recently planted along 54A Street in Ladner.
The suspects had walked a loop around the 5600block of 10A, 10 and 9A avenues lighting random recycling boxes on fire. One resident in the area said upwards of 15 fires were set.

Day to Heel to honour six Ladner dogs Memorial event set for Sunday afternoon in Langley will also raise awareness on keeping pets safe BY
JESSICA KERR
jkerr@delta-optimist.com
A memorial event this weekend will honour the six Ladner dogs that died last month and bring awareness on keeping pets safe. A Day to Heel is set for Sunday at 2 p.m. at Spirit Square at Douglas Park in Langley. “Dr. Alan Wolfelt coined the term companioning, in part, it means to walk alongside someone who is grieving,” said Kevin Woronchak, owner of Until We Meet Again Pet Memorial Centre, which is organizing Sunday’s event. “A Day to Heel is a beautiful opportunity for all of us to do just that for the families who have lost their beloved companions.” The six dogs — Buddy, Molly, Salty, Teemo, Oscar
and Mia — were with their dog walker on May 13 when she reported them stolen from the back of her truck while it was parked at the Brookswood dog park in Langley. The report prompted a massive search, however, a week later the truth came out when the dog walker admitted the animals had died after she left them in the truck. The dogs’ bodies were later recovered from an Abbotsford ditch. The B.C. SPCA has been investigating the incident and last month announced it would recommend animal cruelty charges against the dog walker. An event at the North 40 dog park in Ladner earlier this month gave the public another chance to honour and remember the dogs, as well as gave the families a chance to thank the com-

munity for its support during their sad ordeal. “The human animal bond is a powerful thing and I believe that it is our deep understanding of this bond that has brought us together after this tragic event,” Woronchak said. Sunday’s event will honour the six dogs, as well as provide public awareness and education on how to keep pets safe. In the meantime, an
online petition has been started to make animal cruelty an indictable offence under the Criminal Code. The petition has garnered more than 116,000 signatures so far. There is also an online fundraising drive, initially started to help cover the costs of the search for the dogs, that will now help fund memorials for the canines as well as legal fees. So far, more than
$5,100 has been raised. Donations can be made by visiting http://www. gofundme.com/97yjh4. The petition can be found by visiting www.thepetitionsite.com and searching Brookswood 6. FILE PHOTO

MURPHY’S LAW
If only there were an off-ramp. I was talking to someone from East Ladner the other day about the new 80th Street exit on southbound Highway 99. This particular individual works in the northern regions of Surrey and finds the new South Fraser Perimeter Road to be a godsend. When the 80th Street exit opened last month, he thought this might be an opportunity to shorten his commute further by avoiding the afternoon congestion around the George Massey Tunnel. As it stands now, he has to take Highway 99 northbound to the Highway 17A interchange, then south on 17A before making the left turn at Ladner Trunk Road. But what if he could jump on Highway 99 southbound from the Perimeter Road, immediately take the 80th Street exit and then head home via Trunk Road? It’s not only shorter in distance but would be considerably quicker by not having to get in line with all those headed through the tunnel. The only problem is there’s no way to get from westbound on the Perimeter Road to southbound on Highway 99. You can go north on 99 and obviously straight toward Tsawwassen (you can go south on 99 if you’re coming out of Tsawwassen), but there’s no exit ramp westbound. To be fair to road designers, this type of off-ramp wouldn’t have been of any use prior to the creation of the 80th Street exit. If you were on the Perimeter Road anywhere east of the Alex Fraser Bridge, you’d take Highway 91 to get to southbound 99. And even if you’re coming out of Tilbury, Highway 91 still makes the most sense, so a ramp at the 99 interchange would have been superfluous. As a result, you can’t really blame the engineers, but that doesn’t make it any less annoying to see a shortcut that’s tantalizingly out of reach. *** While on the subject of highway quirks, I’m still waiting for the sign on Highway 17A to be modified to reflect the change in traffic patterns approaching the tunnel. About halfway between Ladner Trunk Road and the Highway 99 interchange there’s a sign on northbound 17A that informs drivers both lanes head through the tunnel and into Vancouver. Yet only a few hundred metres past that sign there’s an overhead one that notes, and rightly so, that only the right lane will take you to the tunnel. Most drivers are local and don’t pay any attention to the first sign, but given it’s been six months you’d think it should have been changed by now.

COMMUNITY COMMENT I’m caught in one of those strange time warp things again because it seems like just a few short weeks ago I was very happy to note that the days were getting longer. With the summer solstice arriving tomorrow, I find myself taking stock and am happy to say that I feel like I was an active participant in what has been an outstanding spring. Hanging out on the deck in the late afternoon has been very entertaining over the past couple of months. We have seen three families of chickadees come and go. If you are a chickadee mom or dad, you are busy all the time. Watching them fly from feeders to trees to birdhouses several dozen times a day is to witness some deft flying skill. We were lucky enough to
observe two of the families “fly the coop.” When the babies came out they kind of landed on the deck and started pecking away at nothing and then went to hang out in a hydrangea plant while mom and dad, caterpillars in mouth, flew around looking for the kids. Soon the backyard took on the ambience of an air show with parents looking for kids and vice versa. After a few days it was all over. The kids had moved out officially and were eating on their own regularly. What takes us 18 to 20 years to accomplish as parents takes chickadees a couple of weeks. Very efficient indeed. The family does get together several dozen times a day to discuss things at the cafeteria in the apple tree. That is much more social than a once a week Sunday dinner. Like chickadees doing some early exploring, the community is buzzing with kids on bikes and playing in the parks. An early start to summer vacation doesn’t seem to bother them one little bit. I have grown to enjoy all seasons but summer is my clear favourite. I think it has something to do with the sensory experience that connects smells and imagery with rec-

ollections of summers gone by. The evening air is seasoned with signature marinades grilling expertly on backyard barbecues and the promise of good times with friends and family over the coming couple of months bring a much welcomed feeling of anticipation. There are plenty of great smells and sounds at Boundary Bay and spring tides have seen recent lows of one or two feet. If you haven’t walked the sand bars on a low tide here recently you should. This past Tuesday’s lunch walk with Luna, my trusty Springer spaniel, we saw 29 bald eagles and 16 great blue herons. The smell of the warm, salty air is intoxicating and when I closed my eyes I could see the sand bars of Spanish Banks in Vancouver vividly and I recalled the wonderful picnics I shared there with extended family as a child. I am going to try to be as successful in living in the moment in the summer as I was in the spring. The seasons sneak up on you, that’s for sure. Whatever your plans are for the summer, drink it in and enjoy! Don’t forget to put malt vinegar on your fries, and buy at least one Popsicle from an ice cream truck.

June 20, 2014 The Delta Optimist A9 Letters to the Editor
Obnoxious bikers disturb peace & quiet for others Editor: Me again, your social propriety gadfly. I’ve noticed my posts attract few responses — none, actually. I take this to mean they’re not being read by those I’m trying to poke in the eye, in turn probably because these folks don’t read letters to the editor, if they read at all. So here’s a post I’ve been saving up that should get a bit more attention. If you’re a domesticated suburbanite but have a Hawg that you roar around on when the sun shines, costumed in the obligatory bad-boy uniform, then get your between-the-legs throb going, because I guarantee you will object to this post. (Caveat: If you’re a motorcycle enthusiast who’s chosen any of the very strong bikes deliberately crafted for performance without wasteful thunder, this post doesn’t apply to
you; but feel free to share why you made that choice when so many make the other one.) Rather than directly challenge your disrespect for others’ preference for quiet, and rather than argue that you have a testosteronedriven, please-notice-me pathology, I propose a simple mental exercise that should engage even your chopper-centric brain. Surely, if you can handle your Hawg, you can cope with a little thought experiment? Imagine someone has invented a motorcycle helmet and companion gear that provides the exact sensory experience your Hawg currently provides — sound, vibration, smell, all of it. The other thing this gear does is make your bike completely silent to others. Yep, you get the experience, they don’t. Win-win, right? I bet you wouldn’t install
this setup even if it were free and added 100 horsepower to your manhood enhancement device. And what does that say about you, other than that you positively want to forcefully project a bad-boy, up-yours persona that aggravates others? If that’s what it says, then I challenge you to either get the psychological help you need or live the bad-boy life for real — quit your job, divorce your family, abandon your friends and make real your Mad Max impersonation. But no, I expect you prefer the cushy domestic comforter fallback, while not caring that you mess up others’ sensibilities while you indulge your antisocial habit. Come on, Hawgnoxious ones, speak. Show me I’m wrong, but not simply by making even more noise. Patrick Conroy
Push needed to stop Point Roberts radio towers
Editor: Tsawwassen residents are encouraged to attend Delta council’s meeting next Monday at 7 p.m. when municipal staff will present a status report on the radio towers proposed for Point Roberts. The radio signal will be directed north to cover us in blanketing interference, which is prohibited in nor-
mal situations. MP Kerry-Lynne Findlay has passed this buck to Whatcom County, which has no authority to enforce the blanketing interference regulations. of the Federal Communications Commission in the U.S. or Industry Canada. Delta’s mayor and council have been asked to stand up for Tsawwassen to
see that our two countries’ blanketing interference regulations are applied, which would result in the cancellation of the FCC construction permit. Please add your support to our request that mayor and council insist Findlay and her federal cabinet colleagues handle our international issue appropriately. Greg J. Edwards

Port proposal is beyond province’s jurisdiction Editor: Re: MLA seeks assessment for railway expansion, June 13 I understand MLA Vicki Huntington’s concerns around the Burlington Northern Santa Fe railway expansion in Delta, but the federal government has complete jurisdiction over this proposed project and has decided a federal environmental assessment will
not be conducted. While the province can sometimes have a role in the environmental assessment process for railway expansion, this is not one of those times. This particular project does not meet the threshold for a provincial environmental assessment and there is no mechanism in place for the province to request the federal government undertake an envi-
ronmental assessment for a proposed project under federal jurisdiction. Your readers should be assured our government is a part of an interagency review committee to ensure environmental concerns related to the entire Fraser Surrey Docks project are raised with Ottawa. Mary Polak Minister of Environment
Another shopper grateful for the kindness of strangers Editor: Re: Random act of kindness leaves shoppers stunned & teary eyed, letter to the editor, June 11 After reading about an elderly woman’s groceries
being paid for in Thrifty Foods by a previous customer, I need to acknowledge my good fortune. On Mother’s Day weekend, a young girl with her mother handed me a
$10 Save-On-Foods card and wished me a Happy Mother’s Day. Thank you again and I apologize for being so late in acknowledging this wonderful deed. L. Robertson

The Tour de Delta is receiving a $50,000 Sport Canada Hosting grant for its road race, it was announced Tuesday at a press conference at municipal hall. Mayor Lois Jackson made the announcement on behalf of Minister of State for Sport Bal Gosal. She thanked Gosal, the federal government and the Sport Canada Hosting Program for the financial support for the men’s and women’s White Spot Delta Road Race. “This federal grant will make a big difference in helping us provide two premier cycling events,” she said. Jackson also noted both the men’s and women’s road races are now UCI-sanctioned. The Union Cycliste International is cycling’s international governing body. “This is a huge honour for us.” This will be the first year the women’s road race has been sanctioned.

Tour de Delta co-chair Jamie Davidson is excited by how this year’s races are shaping up. It allows individual riders to earn international points, said Cycling Canada president John Tolkamp. He noted it also allows Canada to earn international points towards spots at the Olympics and world championships. “We believe Canada is on the cusp of becoming an international powerhouse, especially in women’s cycling,” he said. Tour de Delta race director Mark Ernsting noted there were 51 women on the start line last year and there
are currently 66 female riders already registered for this year. Tour de Delta is a part of B.C. Superweek, which features nine races over 10 days throughout the Lower Mainland. Tour de Delta runs from July 4 to 6 and includes criterium races in North Delta and Ladner in addition to the White Spot Delta Road Race. Representing White Spot, Ron Toigo said the business is honoured to be a part of Tour de Delta.

Hope to all This is a time of year when many people sigh with relief, ahhhh! The winter darkness has passed and the torrents of spring rain have watered the early-planted gardens. Now we weed, and wait for the long, lazy days of summer. In many church communities this is a time of year when we take time to say thank you for the ministry shared over the past 10 months. Messy Church has a picnic and pool party, the men’s fellowship hosts a yummy BBQ, Coffee Hour adds lemonade to the menu, and yet the people of God continue to serve as they respond with thankfulness for the many blessings given to us by God. There are also still difficult decisions to be made, illness to battle
and loneliness to endure but even here God has promised to be with us. God, I believe, suffers with us as we grieve and struggle — but never leaves us. Perhaps we see God’s presence through the eyes and hands of friends or neighbours — but the promise of God’s abiding presence is true. So, in the spirit of thankfulness for God’s goodness and the compassion of friends and neighbours, let me add a word to you, the readers of the Optimist, for the work you do in this community that make it such a wonderful and rich community in which to live. With gladness we work and play in this spectacular part of God’s creation to bring life and hope to all who we meet.

en months ago Michael Rudd had absolutely no dance experience. Fast forward to today and he’ll be performing ballet, including a solo, in Free Flight Dance’s True Colours and Shining Stars show tonight and this weekend at Genesis Theatre in Ladner. “Julie talked me in to it,” he says, referring to the local dance studio’s Julie Brash. Brash was coming to classes at Rudd’s Open Space Yoga last summer and asked if she gave him 10 months of private classes, would he take on a specific role in her show. “My gut reaction was no, but I went through a whole bunch of stuff last year like losing family members and you just realize life is short,” he says. “And who the hell asks a 47-year-old guy to start

A local photo collective presents a new show at Stir Coffee House in Ladner Village tonight. The show is titled Dirty Laundry. “We’ve all just taken that theme and ran with it in completely different directions. It’s a very diverse set of images,” says Ali
bers. The group has seven members with completely different photographic backgrounds, Roddam explains, adding that some are professionals and some are hobbyists. The show features one image, ranging from landscapes to portraits to experimental, per photographer. An opening event for Dirty Laundry takes place
from 7 to 9 p.m. The photos will be hanging until August.

ballet?” Rudd also decided to face a lifetime fear - stage fright. He also made the decision to blog (http://ballewiener.com) about his experience learning ballet. “It seemed like a good idea. I think originally when I did it, I figured if I blogged people would laugh with me, not at me,” he says, adding that he’s getting feedback about helping others deal with the fear of going on stage.
“I’m enjoying it, I’m actually signing up for adult classes in the fall.”
Michael Rudd
In terms of learning ballet, he says the bar work is very technical, similar to yoga. “I’m just scratching the surface of it. Getting away from the bar and actually dancing is out of my comfort zone.” Ballet has been probably the hardest thing he’s done, Rudd says, adding Brash is a brilliant teacher. “I’m enjoying it, I’m actually signing up for adult classes in the fall. So I will carry on after this. I’m not sure about the performance side of things,” he says with
a laugh. Brash says she’s been very impressed with Rudd. “The thing that impresses me probably the most about Michael is the work ethic. You can only go as far as what you will push yourself as a dancer. We say this to the students all the time,” she says. The show is split into two halves. The first portion, True Colours, features ballet and has a story to it as well. It’s about a girl who has autism and how harsh and judgmental society was in the past and how it has changed. “It’s not just about society accepting other people who are different and have things that are outside of what we call the norm, but it’s about accepting yourself for who you are no matter what that is,” Brash explains. The second half will include a range of performances, including hip-hop, jazz, tap and musical theatre. Free Flight Dance presents True Colours and Shining Stars tonight at 7 p.m., tomorrow at 3 p.m. and Sunday at 3 p.m. at Genesis Theatre, 5005-45th Ave., Ladner. Tickets are $20 each. Tickets are at the door subject to availability.

Off the beaten track in the U.K. Walking holiday explores Cotswold’s less traveled pathways BY
CHRIS MILLIKAN
Optimist contributor
Our Cotswold walking holiday begins in little known Monkton Combe, eight kilometres from Bath. Settled at the village inn, we examine prebooked custom itinerary, maps, trail-cards and even transportation vouchers, everything needed for our self-guided explorations. Shouldering daypacks filled with directions, hats, jackets, water, sunscreen and snacks, we take our first walk. The village, we discover, dates to Saxon times. Lands granted to Bath Abbey provided monks a refuge in this verdant, steep-sided valley. Names like Monks Retreat and Monkswold are still etched on some stone houses. Along a quiet lane, we pass the site of Fulling and Tucking Mills, closed since 1931. Our trail-cards
describe water driven stocks that degreased and, adding fuller’s earth, felted cloth for dying. Nearby stands the ivycovered home of William Smith, Father of Modern Geology and Bath’s saviour. In 1810, the renowned geothermal spring mysteriously dried-up. Discovering it had diverted, Smith re-established its original channel. Sturdy boots and walking poles help us climb a nearvertical pathway to neighbouring Combe Down’s community park, once a quarry supplying honeybrown limestone for building Bath and Buckingham Palace. Before descending again, we gaze over our sleepy village below, population 356. Roast lamb and Yorkshire pudding back in the friendly pub rewards our successful reconnoiter. A comfortable rhythm overtakes our next six days. Hearty English breakfasts

with French press coffees kick off excursions averaging five hours daily, over hill and dale. Pub lunches re-charge us for return loops through the pastoral countryside to our lodgings. And relaxing over dinner, we trade stories with fellow walkers and the regulars. Meandering from Monkton Combe to Dundas Wharf, we sight triplearched Dundas Aqueduct built in 1798, the earlier of two spanning the Avon

We visit stone villages located along old Roman roads and trudge a demanding forested ridge. We join the Cotswold Way, an extensive National Trail popular with hardy hikers, including early monks on pilgrimage to Bath Abbey. We enjoy tranquil National Nature Preserve parklands, ramble in beech woodlands where Henry VIII and Ann Boleyn hunted, pop into atmospheric churches and discover where Lord Mayor of London Dick Whittington likely spent his wretched boyhood on one of several estates owned by influential 13th century land barons. Walking the Cotswold’s less traveled pathways shows us rural England’s beauty and charm. “I never had pain-free feet - UNTIL NOW!”
Pain Doctor Discovers Circulation-Boosting Material In ‘Miracle Socks’ for Diabetics and Foot Pain Sufferers! B r e a k t h r o u g h f i b e r s i m p r o v e b l o o d f l o w, s w e l l i n g , b o o s t o x y g e n f l o w, and eliminate foot fatigue - naturally in as little as 5 minutes!
If you suffer from poor circulation, injury, swelling or any condition that leaves your feet fatigued and sore, then read on to discover the breakthrough that can change your life. Good news comes in the form of a ‘pain-busting microfiber’ that is used to weave a circulation-boosting sock, called BambusaTM. Better Blood Flow The ‘miracle sock’ is made from a new, patented anion-technology that is weaved into every strand of thread used to make a BambusaTM sock. This special micro-fiber thread is made from revolutionary bamboo charcoal to stimulate blood flow and revitalize feet. When this material comes in contact with body-heat it is proven to release circulation-boosting ions. The 3D-weave technology used in the material has been compared to infrared light therapy to help revitalize stiff and sore muscles. The manufacturer, who also makes a back and wrist sleeve, says the material provides almost instant relief to any part of the body it touches, making it ideal for diabetics, athletes, inflammation, stiffness and swelling.
Darlena from NJ agrees, “You know you can put these on and feel good.” Doctor Recommended Pain specialist of 30 years, Dr. Ronald Jahner comments on the 3Dweave technology, “Infrared therapy has been used for years at medical clinics to treat vascular and circulatory conditions. Physical therapists use infrared therapy to speed recovery. Better blood flow equals less pain. This microfiber works much the same way.” Therapy Without A Prescription! When the socks were photographed using a thermographic imaging camera, results showed up to a 13% increase in blood flow. This helped to improve muscle oxygenation and decrease foot fatigue. The socks have been proven to provide extended relief from cold, swollen and fatigued feet. Relief for Tired, Swollen Feet BambusaTM socks are not a medical device or compression socks because they don’t restrict blood flow. Utilizing the special negative-anion technology, they comfortably increase blood flow and oxygen to tissues.
They are ideal for diabetics and those suffering from neuropathy or injury from repetitive use. BambusaTM socks can also bring comfort to tired legs within minutes of putting them on, energizing individuals who spend long hours on their feet.
IDEAL FOR: • Neuropathy • Raynaud's Syndrome • Cramping • Cold Feet
“While recovering from a broken ankle I wore my BambusaTM socks, and my doctor was amazed at how quickly the swelling went down!” Cathy K., PA.
BENEFITS: • Increased blood flow and oxygen • Reduced swelling and pain • Anti-microbial • Wicks away moisture • Increased range of motion
Goodbye to Pain and Numbness “I went out on the golf course for 18 holes, and when I got home my feet weren’t swollen, they weren’t sweating and my feet didn’t hurt!” Lou B., NY.
Tom from NJ reports, “I suffer from chronic foot cramps. My feet were sore for days after the cramping. My wife gave me the BambusaTM socks, I wore them, and the foot cramps stopped. I replaced all my socks with BambusaTM. My feet feel great now.”

The infrared anions generated by the charcoal bamboo increase blood flow and deliver oxygen to the tissues. After wearing for only minutes there is an increase in temperature due to the increased blood flow, resulting in improved comfort and reduced swelling. Twenty minutes after using the anion-fiber infused socks, patient has better blood flow and less numbness.

North Delta’s Nick Marach will share a few stories from his new book next week in Ladner. Marach, who spent close to 20 years fishing, titled his book A Gillnet’s Drift: Tales of Fish and Freedom on the BC Coast. It’s the first book he’s published. “Enough things happened during my fishing time, I thought, well, I should put it down once and for all so at least my kids would know about it and if others were interested that’d be even better,” he says. Marach bought his first boat, the T.K., in 1972 to live on. “It turned out to have a license on it and working gillnet gear. One thing led to another and there I was fishing,” he says. Marach, 72, is now retired. He previously worked for the City of Surrey as a building divi-

Tsawwassen author Maureen Grenier (right) held a launch party for her new sports-themed mystery for children last Sunday.
Author launches latest mystery
A launch party was held last Sunday for Someone’s Trapped, a sports-themed mystery for children by author Maureen Grenier of Tsawwassen. It’s the second in the Viking Club Mystery series, and the mystery is spun out against the backdrop of kids’ summer soccer. “I love writing sportsthemed mysteries for children because the sports world is a microcosm of life itself,” Grenier told the gathering of friends and fans. “Through sports experiences – good and bad – children learn how to cope with life, and learn that winning is fun and losing is no disgrace and simply part of the learning process.”
The author says the solution to helping poor readers improve their skills is encouraging them to read enough to master the craft and fast enough to enjoy the story. What can help motivate children to finish reading a mystery is to find out “whodunit.” “Sometimes, it is a matter of finding the right book at the right reading level to captivate a young reader,” says Grenier. “There is no pressure in reading for fun – no test, no danger of being called up to read in front of the class and no worrisome questions. The only question for the reader is: Did you like the book?” The author gave a brief reading and explained that

at the centre of the mystery in Someone’s Trapped is 13-year-old Rebecca who is horrified to discover she has become a suspect in a series of thefts from her soccer team dressing room. Rebecca calls on the Viking Club Detective Agency for help, and hopes that she and the other two members of the club, 12-year-old Chris and 10-year-old Jaylon, will come up with a plan to prove her innocence. Someone’s Trapped is illustrated by the author and available at Black Bond Books in Ladner, FriesenPress in Victoria and can be ordered on Amazon, Kindle, Barnes and Noble, Chapters and independent bookstores.

Readers pick their favourites
Welcome to the 17th annual Readers’ Choice Awards special edition that honours and recognizes the businesses and individuals chosen the best in their category by Optimist readers. Winners were determined by ballots that ran in the Optimist this spring. Readers were asked to vote
for their favourite in each category. The business or individual receiving the most votes was declared the “Readers’ Choice.” As part of the contest, we asked readers to share a few words on why a particular business is so special to them. We received a great many responses and have
included as many as we can, along with photos of those businesses, in this section. All readers that filled out a ballot were entered in a draw for a gift basket from Mud Bay Wines in Tsawwassen. Determined by a random draw, the winner is Stacey Boyda.
