Home delivery of mail to cease

Transition to community mailboxes to be implemented in ‘thoughtful and effective way,’ officials tell Delta council BY

SANDOR GYARMATI

Like it or not, all Delta residents now receiving mail delivery at their homes will have to start going to community mailboxes.

Your local choice for auto glass!

That new reality was delivered by a pair of Canada Post officials to council on Monday during a presentation on the agency’s plan to eliminate all home delivery service, although a date hasn’t been set for the withdrawal of service

for Delta. “We know changing from doorto-door to community mailboxes represents a significant change for residents who have not had it before. “We also understand what

neighbourhoods are to residents. We’re confident we can implement this transition in a thoughtful and effective way,” said Jeremy Cotton, manager of municipal engagement and government affairs for Canada Post.

Delta has about 39,000 addresses with approximately 28,000 getting mail delivery at the door. Canada Post announced in December it would be phasing out door-to-door delivery of regular See MAIL page 3

Marijuana facility approved Delta council gives green light to medical pot growing operation proposed for Tilbury BY

change how medical marijuana is grown and distributed in this country. The regulations are aimed at allowing larger-scale operations over small homebased ones. In a pre-emptive move, Delta council passed zoning regulations prohibiting medical marijuana facilities in all zones, including agricultural, although they would be considered on a case-by-case basis. The idea was to keep any potential operation within industrial zones. Several neighbouring businesses of the Tilbury application wrote to Delta expressing opposition, concerned about crime, air quality and a drop in

property values. Some of the business owners were on hand at the public hearing to hear Delta Farms president David Rose offer assurances the business would comply with Health Canada’s stringent security and operational requirements, including installing proper ventilation. He also said Delta police would be consulted regarding every aspect of the security plan “Every aspect of the operation would be monitored and tracked, from the first seed to the last gram,” he said. Rose, noting there would be no external physical changes to the building, said there would be no negative impact on prop-

erty values. He added the business should be called a pharmaceutical company and not a grow op. Bob McKenzie with Canadian Autoparts Toyota Inc. (CAPTIN), located near the proposed facility, reiterated concerns regarding crime and what could happen to their neighborhood. Delta’s deputy planning director Marcy Sangret noted police would have to be consulted to see how to determine if any increase in area crime could be attributed to the business. After a series of questions, the majority of council voted in favour of granting third reading. Noting he had a late

friend who could have benefited from medical marijuana, Coun. Bruce McDonald said the application meets the criteria checklist, although it would have been better for the applicant to first meet with the neighbourhood to explain what was being proposed and answer questions. Coun. Ian Paton said he expects more applications will be coming “left, right and centre” but the Tilbury operation is the appropriate setting, located in a concrete building in an industrial area, as well as surrounded by fencing. Coun. Robert Campbell agreed, but noted he doubts Delta will become a medical marijuana grow centre of the country because Health Canada will put a cap on the number of licenses. However, Mayor Lois Jackson voted in opposition, saying there’s nothing to suggest problems won’t arise from the new type of marijuana operations. “One of the things we have not talked about is the neighbours. If this was proposed for a residential area, we would have paid more attention to what they had to say,” she said. Jackson, noting other communities should take their fare share of such businesses, said she didn’t like the idea the Tilbury business could expand to a 5,000-pound annual business without needing council’s approval.

million with the conversion. That means residents who have enjoyed home delivery will have to pick up their mail at community mailboxes, already a fact of life for newer suburban developments. Part of a multi-faceted plan to reduce costs, including “rightsizing” its workforce, Canada Post says it will work with local officials to choose safe and appropriate community mailbox sites. The Crown corporation has already set out some criteria including

having the mailboxes close to street lighting wherever possible. Canada Post says it’s now consulting various groups, including seniors, about “alternative approaches for those with significant challenges.” However, the postal service hasn’t stated whether it’s considering continuing home delivery for certain people, even for an added fee. Coun. Sylvia Bishop asked whether increased online shopping, which requires parcel delivery, is helping make up for the reduction of letters by

mail. Cotton responded that Canada Post’s share of the home parcel delivery service is increasing, but it faces substantial competition from courier companies. Mailbox theft was also an issue raised with Cotton noting only a relatively few mailboxes are broken into. Canada Post currently delivers mail and parcels to roughly 15 million households and businesses. About five million still get door-to-door delivery. The conversion will have no impact on the two thirds of Canadian households that already receive their mail

and parcels through community mailboxes, grouped or lobby mailboxes or rural mailboxes. Businesses in commercial corridors that receive large volumes will also see no change. The initial conversion involving several communities in the country is already underway. The postal service expects nearly 15,000 employees to retire or leave the company over the next five years, more than enough to allow for the reduction of between 6,000 and 8,000 positions, mainly through attrition.

Delta council has approved another medical marijuana facility in the municipality. A public hearing was held at municipal hall Tuesday for a rezoning application by a new company called Delta Farms to open an industrial marijuana growing facility in the 7300-block of Vantage Way in Tilbury. The proposed 11,400square-foot grow operation would be surrounded by warehouses and other businesses. The applicant stated there would be an expected production volume of up to 22 kilograms of medical marijuana per week, serving approximately 2,000 patients. The product, which would not be sold on-site, would generally be transported via Canada Post. The new operation, which still requires Health Canada clearance before receiving final Delta approval, would be smaller than the recently approved medical marijuana grow operation by International Herbs Medical Marijuana Ltd. for a facility on Annacis Island. However, the Tilbury operation, sharing its building with another business tenant, could conceivably expand into the rest of the building in the future. New federal rules that took effect this spring

Delta is backing out of the lucrative wedding reception business at the Harris Barn. Council this week voted in favour of a staff recommendation for new rental criteria for the restored barn in Ladner, including booking no further wedding receptions. Also, security deposits will be increased and bylaw officers will be on-site during the remaining 2014 wedding receptions. “Use of the Barn for wedding receptions has proven to be problematic. The nature of the rental is such that events go late into the evening, loud music and alcohol consumption spill beyond the limits of the Barn and the majority of renters are from outside Delta, many of whom do not care about the impact their event is having on the facility or adjacent community,” a report by CAO George Harvie notes. Opened last May, the historic barn had been relocated from a property on 64th Street, reassembled and refurbished at Hawthorne Grove Park. The property already had on site the restored Kirkland House, maintained by a non-profit society, which entered an agreement with Delta to operate the barn as well. The barn has 8,000 square feet of space over two floors. The addition of the barn to the Arthur Drive location provided a new venue for large special events that had previ-

A council decision this week will prohibit the booking of any further weddings at Harris Barn. ously been lacking in Delta, according to the municipality during the grand opening. As soon as it opened, it was fully booked for weddings and other events, and didn’t take long for all of 2014 to be booked. However, neighbouring homeowners were soon upset about the late night party noise and excessive lighting. Delta introduced a number of measures to mitigate the concerns, but those weren’t satisfactory for the residents. Tara Sudbury, whose backyard faces the barn, noted residents were given the impression the barn would be used as a museum and, at most, a meeting room for local groups. Doubting such commercial operation is permitted in the Agricultural Land Reserve, Sudbury took Delta to court. After reviewing the latest changes, Sudbury asked for additional measures to

shield her property from the barn and parking lot. She said Delta had conducted itself “in a most unethical manner” with the barn rental business. The municipality will spend $90,000 to install a berm, and other landscaping, as well as change the lighting. The staff report notes the elimination of weddings will increase the ability to program the barn for community uses. One example is a farmto-table cooking class that’s been introduced. Another site change will be the installation of a gate to secure the site at night. Earlier this year, Delta assumed responsibility for issuing rental contracts and managing the barn from the Kirkland House Society Society president Colin Campbell, at the time said the full-time commercial operation was stretching his group of volunteers too thin.

Trucks get inspected C ONSUMERS during annual blitz

Initiative sees total of 355 tickets issued last week BY

JESSICA KERR

jkerr@delta-optimist.com

Delta police and several other agencies were out on roads around the community last week for the department’s annual truck inspection blitz. Inspection teams were out at several locations around Delta last Tuesday through Thursday checking out commercial vehicles traveling through the community. The annual initiative aims to inspect as many commercial vehicles as possible with a focus on those that might not be properly maintained and could ultimately pose a danger on the road. Officers from Delta’s traffic section, working in partnership with the provincial Commercial Vehicle Safety and Enforcement Branch (CVSE), were joined by officers and civilians from a number of different agencies, including: Delta’s own vehicle inspection unit, the Integrated Road Safety Unit, Surrey

and Deas Island RCMP, Surrey bylaw enforcement, Vancouver and New Westminster police departments, CP Police and WorkSafe BC. In all, 75 officers were out inspecting commercial vehicles at eight different locations throughout Delta. Cole Delisle, acting regional manager with the Ministry of Transportation’s Commercial Vehicle Safety and Enforcement branch, said that each truck that passed through one of the eight sites was given a preliminary visual inspection. From there, any that looked like it could have a problem were put through a second, more thorough inspection. He said officers were looking at the general condition of the truck — the condition of the tires, brakes, lights, steering and load security, as well as the vehicles mechanical components, and driver licensing and for signs of fatigue. After inspection, trucks are given either a pass, violation present or out of service designation.

Any vehicle with an out of service designation is not allowed to proceed before the problem is fixed. The department has a number of mechanics, tire companies and tow trucks on standby to help fix any issues and get trucks back on the road. In total this year, 476 trucks went through one of the checkpoints and required a secondary inspection. Of those, 71 (15 per cent) passed with no defects or violations, 189 (40 per cent) were immediately put out of service and 216 (45 per cent) had a violation or defect present that did not require an out of service designation but did require repair. A total of 355 tickets were issued for a total of $72,951 in fines. Delisle said the out of service rating for the inspection initiative is usually high because it is targeting trucks that look like they will likely have an issue. “We do see a lot of quality trucks out there,” he said.

Event at Memorial Park helps little boy’s family

Six-year-old has diffuse intrinsic potine giloma BY

JESSICA KERR

jkerr@delta-optimist.com

Family, friends and even strangers came together at Memorial Park in Ladner this week to get active, have some fun and raise money to help the family of a little boy battling a terminal disease. The event, organized by Tsawwassen residents, and BC Ferries employees, Erika Brockhausen and Sue McBain, was put together in six weeks after the two women heard about fellow employee Tim Welfing’s six-year-old son Javan. Welfing and his family, which includes two other young children and another on the way, moved to Victoria from Washington State a year and a half ago after he took an engineering position at BC Ferries. Last Christmas, Welfing said, he and wife Cami noticed that the muscles in Javan’s face weren’t always working properly. Initially they were not too concerned, he said, but brought it up at a routine doctor’s appointment. That’s when everything changed. Javan was immediately sent to the

There the family received the devastating diagnosis. “When you come into the room and the nurses are crying, you know it’s not good,” Welfing said. Javan was diagnosed with diffuse intrinsic potine giloma (DIPG) — a rare inoperable tumour that grows in the brain stem. DIPG usually only strikes young children — between the ages of four and 10 — and most die within a year. Because of the location and the nature of DIPG

tumours, surgery is not an option; the disease is mostly resistant to traditional chemotherapy and other treatments. Welfing said Javan completed an initial round of radiation and chemotherapy at the end of February and is currently undergoing maintenance chemo every six weeks. He has lost a significant amount of weight and does not have much energy now, but on the day of the fundraiser Javan was happy and jumping up and down, he said. “We’re really excited about that,” he said.

A little advice for local MP TED MURPHY

MURPHY’S LAW I’m far from a Tory strategist, but I feel compelled to offer some free, totally unsolicited advice to our MP, KerryLynne Findlay. Our rookie member of Parliament, who cruised to victory in her first election and was subsequently appointed to the federal cabinet by Prime Minister Stephen Harper, had been enjoying a rather charmed first term in Ottawa as the representative from Delta-Richmond East. That honeymoon has now ended, however, as Findlay finds herself smack dab in the middle of the controversy swirling around the proposal to erect radio towers in Point Roberts. The first-term MP has certainly worked on the file, having arranged meetings, passed along information and attempted to obtain answers to questions posed by constituents. We know she’s hard at work because, well, she’s told us so. What she hasn’t told us is that she thinks the idea of erecting five 150-foot towers just south of the border is ludicrous. She hasn’t told us it’s absolutely crazy to subject the 22,000 or so Tsawwassenites to the same blanketing interference that’s wreaked havoc on the good folks of Ferndale and their household electronic devices for years. I don’t doubt for a minute that Findlay and her staff have been hard at work navigating large bureaucracies on both sides of the border, but — and this is where the advice comes in — she hasn’t jumped in with both feet. There’s a difference between working a file because it’s your job and working a file because you believe in the cause and desperately want to right a wrong. A politician can expend the same effort, and even meet with the same results, but the public perception is completely different if they think you’re on their side. Findlay hasn’t made that leap. This is a riding, after all, that has elected an independent to the provincial legislature not once, but twice, because voters ache for someone to speak out on their behalf. There’s only so much Vicki Huntington can do in an 85-seat legislature, but the sheer fact she’s voicing our queries and concerns in the capital is sufficient for a great many. It should also be noted it’s the same riding that re-elected the original maverick, the always outspoken John Cummins, on multiple occasions. Findlay, on the other hand, has the look of a facilitator, which is not necessarily a bad thing, but if the results don’t go in the public’s favour, she could be left holding the bag. At least she can’t say she wasn’t warned.

Former mayor gives final words on Southlands decision DOUG HUSBAND

COMMUNITY COMMENT Hallelujah! Some rejoice and others lament in South Delta over the decision by Delta Council and Metro Vancouver to accept development on a portion of the Spetifore lands. There remains some dissatisfaction in the community over these decisions. As one directly involved in this property’s political fate in 1989 this will be my final comment, as much has already been said on the pros and cons on the current proposal. In terms of context, the property has been the subject of public discussion for more than half a century following the passing of Sam Spetifore in 1956. The Corporation Of Delta was very much involved in the application for development in the 1970s culminating with a public hearing in 1975 with near unanimous support by the community and full support of council.

Much has been said criticizing the manner by which the land was removed from the ALR. What seems to be lost in the discussion was Delta’s request to Victoria to overturn GVRD’s rejection of this application. Knowing these issues and support of the community in five elections, I was challenged with the review of the history of this family and their lands as their application lay inertly in Delta’s planning department. Like many others, I felt the GVRD had overstepped its authority on denying Delta’s decision. A recent judgement of B.C.’s Supreme Court on a Langley Township land use matter also supported this view. I have never understood how a committee of mayors from other jurisdictions could overturn a decision of elected and accountable citizens of a particular municipality. Many of us believe in the rights of property owners to a public review of proposed zoning changes. That’s what councillors and mayors are primarily charged with by provincial legislation. The Spetifore land use issue had sat dormant for 14 years and full well knowing the risk issues, a majority of council agreed to proceed to a public hearing. At

the same time a large property in Richmond known as Terra Nova underwent nine days of public hearing and was subsequently approved. The Spetifore hearing lasted from May through August and was ultimately rejected by the community and council. A wholesale council change occurred in 1990 over this high profile land issue. As long as that land remained in private hands it would remain a public matter and council’s character would be shaped by this issue. Twenty-five years later the land has received approval in principle by Delta and Metro Vancouver. There are rumblings over who should accept responsibility over this result. Compromise works in the business world, far less so in the political arena. Sean Hodgins wins by organizing support and incorporating views and opinions of those opposed to some or any development. The community wins by having 80 percent of the land returned to agricultural use. There is a consensus after decades of divisiveness. Thirty-nine years later council and the community have come full circle. And a good night to you, Lois.

physical environment, such as the village model identified by ML Burke, has the potential to enhance a residents’ experience, the most important factor in successfully supporting residents’ quality of life are the attitudes, knowledge and behaviours of staff. We often receive kudos about our staff from our residents and their family members and know that KinVillage is not unique is this regard. Inferring that drugging and warehousing residents is the norm in long-term residential care is unfair and, worse, unhelpful. Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia are prevalent amongst today’s residents of long-term residential care. Fortunately organizations like the Alzheimer’s Society have provided practical understanding about the experience of living with these diseases. This, together with current philosophies such as Gentle Care and the Eden Alternative have taught us much about how to better support those living with declines in their mental abilities that are severe enough to interfere with their daily lives. We’ve seen a significant shift during the past two decades in approaches to long-term care. While an improved

Editor: Re: Paterson pitch to politicians, June 20 While we admire and support the efforts of the Delta Seniors’ Planning Team to raise issues of interest for seniors in Delta, we at KinVillage were disappointed and dismayed by the reference in this article to the warehousing and drugging of seniors living in care. As a provider of longterm residential care in Tsawwassen, our goal is to provide person-centred care for each resident who lives at KinVillage, their home. This happens through a partnership between the residents, their family members and loved ones, and our physicians and staff, who are committed to understanding each resident’s unique needs and to using a broad range of strategies to help residents realize their best possible quality of life. Letters to the Editor

A10 The Delta Optimist June 27, 2014 Letters to the Editor

Environmental assessment needed Editor: Re: Port proposal is beyond province’s jurisdiction, letter to the editor, June 20 The environment minister’s response to my call that she contacts her federal counterpart and request an environmental assessment of the Burlington Northern Santa Fe railway expansion continues to be disingenuous. The environment minister says that there is “no mechanism in place for the province” to make such a

request. That is simply not so. The Canadian Environmental Assessment Act (2012), Section 14 (2) states that the federal minister can designate an environmental assessment by order, if “public concerns related to those effects... warrant the designation.” As the minister will know, these public concerns may be relayed to the federal government by any public body, including the Province of B.C. The Corporation of Delta has already submitted its concerns to the

federal minister. The province has not. The proposed rail expansion will be in a sensitive corridor that is below a large residential area and which contains a fish-bearing stream, a public park, a walking trail and the Burns Bog Conservancy. I ask, with respect: What else does the minister need to advocate for an assessment of the Burlington Northern Sante Fe expansion? Vicki Huntington Delta South MLA

Lack of assistance when it comes to radio tower issue

Editor: Happy Canada Day, eh? Without consulting Delta, Tsawwassen First Nation, or Tsawwassen, Industry Canada gave the nod to the construction permit granted to KRPI AM Radio for Point Roberts by the FCC. Belatedly, we were alerted: Intense levels of blanketing interference, normally illegal, are in store for Tsawwassen.

We ask our MP to help. But she refuses to have Canada ask the FCC to cancel that construction permit. But Happy Canada Day, eh — our MP. She refuses, too, to file an informal objection to KRPI’s application for renewal of its FCC broadcast licence. But Happy Canada Day, anyway, eh — our MP. Greg J. Edwards

2 Bsy I am trying to test the trend of being busy, and even too busy to include unnecessary letters and numbers in a message. It will make writing and reading, well... faster. Of course this is done in the name of efficiency, driven by text messaging and twitter. Why not use a symbol of a heart for “I love you”? I have so much to do, and I trust that the receiver of the message will understand that I am just too busy to communicate in any other way. Busyness is usually driven by others. We get used to being in the mode of reacting rather than acting in a purposeful, poised way. We are busily doing things, without a calm, balanced centre from which to work. In a real sense, to be too busy is to have given up control of one’s life. To be too busy could be a sign of laziness! And this is where it gets personal. Many of us live many of our days in conflict with our core values. We are busy reacting to

needs and fail to give priority to our spouses and children and those most important to us. We short them because we know they will understand and that we will make it up to them later. This grinds us down and diminishes our enjoyment of life. This is my take on the seemingly acceptable “2 bsy” craze. Many elders in our midst model an availability that is attractive to me. Their ability to focus and to take things more slowly is not a liability, but a gift to the rest of us. Poise is “to hold or carry in equilibrium” (Merriam Webster online). How about carrying ourselves in equilibrium? To do so means not being driven by the false virtue of being busy. Prayer is a way to establish and maintain poise — clearing a quiet, still centre in our lives, every day, and throughout the day. “Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed are those who put their trust in him.” Psalm 34:8

Footwear snatched after being left at door of local business The purpose of the Crime Beat is to educate and inform the public about some of the property crime trends occurring in South Delta and other files of interest. If you see anything occurring that you believe to be suspicious, call 911 for in progress crimes and emergencies or 604-946-4411 for other assistance. The following are some of the calls the Delta Police responded to in the previous week: Tsawwassen • June 17, 12:11 p.m., 5600-block Goldenrod Crescent: Complainant reported he had parked his vehicle overnight in front of the home of his friend. When he returned he found the driver’s side mirror had been smashed off the vehicle. Report taken for information and insurance purposes. • June 18, 9:14 a.m., 1300-block View Crescent: Report received from complainant that sometime overnight a line was spray painted on the back panel and door of her vehicle. No suspects or surveillance. • June 18, 12:48 p.m., 56th Street & View Crescent: Police contacted by grounds keeper of the condos reporting they had found several syringes used and unused, steri swabs, steri cup, and packaging for a replica hand gun. The items appeared to have been in the garden for an extended time as plants had grown around the items. All items photographed and seized by police for destruction.

• June 19, 6:24 p.m., 5400-block 10th Avenue: Report received there had been a fight and that a male was unconscious. On arrival police found the Delta Fire Department already on the scene. The victim claimed there was no fight and the fall was the result of his intoxication. However, witnesses confirmed there was a consensual fight and the victim had fallen during it, hitting his head causing him

to lose consciousness. The victim was transported to the hospital for evaluation of his injuries and the case is still under investigation. • June 21, 11:37 a.m., 6700-block Seaview Road: Complainant reported a rock was thrown through the front passenger side window of his vehicle while parked on the street in front of his residence. Report taken for insurance purposes. Ladner June 18, 11 a.m., Ladner Trunk Road & 54A Street: Complainant reported that sometime overnight the trees along the side of the road had their branches ripped of causing severe damage. Nothing suspicious seen or heard. • June 18, 4:27 p.m., 5800-block Mountain View Boulevard: Complainant reported her son had left his $80 florescent orange shoes at the door of the business

and when he returned they were gone. Video surveillance examined and revealed two females picking up the shoes and placing them in their purse. Police to continue investigation by examining still photos of the suspects. • June 19, 5:21 p.m., 4700-block 53rd Street: Complainant reported she left her car unlocked while parked in the area. Later in the day she realized she had left her purse in the car and it was now missing. The purse contained the complainant’s debit, credit, and gas cards. The cards were used to make several purchases before the complainant was able to cancel them. Police to examine video surveillance in an attempt to identify the suspect. • June 20, 1:10 p.m., 5200-block Ladner Trunk Road: A business reported a child had damaged some sunglasses and that the mother had placed the glasses back in the rack and left the store without offering payment. Police contacted the mother who indicated the damage was accidental and she would return to the store to pay for the damage. The complainant was satisfied with the resolution. • June 22, 2:23 p.m., 5700-block Ladner Trunk Road: Complainant reported she had left her iPhone in the fast food restaurant and when she returned to retrieve the phone it was missing. The serial number of the phone entered in the police computer data base.

Peace River South MLA Mike Bernier spoke about liquefied natural gas at a Delta Chamber of Commerce meeting Wednesday. Bernier, who has been traveling around the province to talk about LNG, gave a presentation at the Delta Town & Country Inn and answered questions submitted by the audience. Part of his talk included explaining the extraction process, called hydraulic fracturing or fracking. He did mention there seems to be a lot of unknowns and skepticism around fracking for a lot of people in the Lower Mainland. Bernier touched on the government’s LNG-Buy BC program, an online tool that helps B.C. businesses connect with LNG opportunities. In terms of global demand Bernier said there’s going to be a 50 per cent increase in demand of natural gas by 2020.

Huge birthday cakes are always a hit on Canada Day. Events around Delta are once again planned to help mark the country’s birthday.

Get ready to celebrate C

Events around Delta mark Canada Day

anada turns 147 next Tuesday and there are celebrations planned around Delta to mark the occasion. If you’re looking to celebrate the country’s birthday with others here are a few options: • The Delta Museum and Archives Society will once again host Canada Day celebrations. The event will take place on Delta Street and Bridge Street, in front

of the Delta Museum in Ladner, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and will feature a pancake breakfast, live musical entertainment, street performers, family activities and a Canada flag cake. The museum is located at 4858 Delta St. • The Tsawwassen Boundary Bay Lions service club will mark Canada Day with a celebration at Diefenbaker Park from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

There will be music, crafts, balloons, hot dogs and a pair of gigantic birthday cakes. Local dignitaries will also attend the event. Diefenbaker Park is located at the corner of 56th Street and 1st Avenue in Tsawwassen. • Kirkland House will host a Canada Day party starting at noon. The Kirkland Scouts are taking a more active role this year with the conces-

sion and games for the kids, notes volunteer Pat Rogers. There will also be a silk zoo for the kids as well as a miniature railway in the garden and in the house (for kids of all ages). There will be quilting and weaving demonstrations inside too. Peter Chipman is scheduled to sing the national anthem at 1 p.m. followed by Maritime songs. There will also be performances

by Circle of Friends, Tina Hoell and the Delta Police Pipe Band. Visitors can also tour the heritage house and the Harris Barn. The event goes until 4 p.m. and Kirkland House is located at 4140 Arthur Dr., Ladner. • Celebrations will continue into the evening at Chalmers Park in North Delta. Things get started at 4:30 p.m. with free

children’s crafts, games and activities while an official ceremony is set for 5 p.m. There will be cake available for the first 500 people, Delta’s website notes. There will be live music performances from The Georgia Straits and the March Hare Band. Barbecue food vendors will be grilling up hamburgers, hotdogs and more for purchase. At 10 p.m. fireworks are scheduled.

A six-pack of B.C. hot springs BY

CHERIE THIESSEN

Optimist contributor

We have paradise to ourselves: three pools snugging into the hill. The lowest, edging the banks of the Lussier River, is luring us to try its frigid temperatures, but it’s too cold. At 44°C, the top pool is just a tad too hot. In true Goldilocks style, I step into the middle pool and proclaim it just right. While eagles overhead check the river for different delights, I’m in Nirvana, wrapped in the springs’ soothing mineral waters. How can anything so pleasurable be good for you? Nevertheless, the Kootenay Rockies’ hot springs are known for their therapeutic benefits. The mineral content of the waters are widely believed to increase metabolism, accelerate healing, soothe muscles, improve blood circulation and detoxify the body’s lymphatic system, not to mention what they do

for the soul. On Day 3 of our eight-day circular hot springs tour, my partner, David, and I are already humming. For the past two days we’ve been making tracks in our Pleasure Way RV toward the start of the tour in Cranbrook, delighted to soon cross off one more dream on our bucket list – renting a small RV and driving the hot springs route, camping in comfort as we go. This undeveloped hot springs in Whiteswan Lake Provincial Park is the first to be savoured. After picking up our RV at Canadream in Delta, we made tracks for Osoyoos and Nk’Mip Campground. Day 2 led us to Cranbrook and nearby Moyie Lake Provincial Park. Now on Day 3, with swimsuits donned, we’ve quickly covered the 225 kilometres to Lussier. We rise reluctantly from the waters, but knowing Fairmont Hot Springs is just half an hour away pro-

vides incentive. We ogle the crumbling hoodoos rearing precariously up over the highway en route, before rolling into the community of Fairmont Hot Springs and then into Fairmont’s highly rated RV park. The views of the Purcell Mountains are awesome, the facilities great, the expansive pools a short walk away, and there are many activities to engage in before and after soaking. We tug on our still damp suits and tumble blissfully into yet another indulgence that’s good for us, already excited about next morning’s kayak trip.

After all, the next port of soak, Radium Hot Springs, is only 37 km away. Day 4 and we meet up with our kayaking guides to bounce down the Columbia River, splashing and bucking our way through rapids, spotting eagles, ospreys, and woodpeckers and getting crimped necks from staring up at the Rockies. And the cure for stiffness is... a long soak at Radium Hot Springs, of course, and we’re soon doing exactly that in 39°C mineral waters. The road to Radium Hot Springs slices through a dramatic cleft in the canyon walls, and if that if that

doesn’t impress you, the mountain goats who seem to own the road, may. High in sulphates, calcium, and bicarbonates, these springs are located in Kootenay National Park, as is our Redstreak Campground. Sprawled on a sunny plateau almost overlooking Radium, the large forest campground offers all amenities and throws in campfires with a permit. After a quiet night, we awake to the aroma of wood smoke and the promise on Day 5 of two more hot springs. Today we climb up Rogers Pass, rub up against more Rockies and shortly after Revelstoke enjoy a free ferry cruise over Upper Arrow Lakes, soon to be greeted on the other side by well-named Halcyon Hot Springs. Spotlessly clean and beautifully located over the lake, abutted by the Monashee Range, Halcyon offers three pools on two levels. After another idyllic soak, we carry on a further 35 km. to Nakusp

Hot Springs, at the end of a winding mountain road. There, surrounded by oldgrowth forest, we luxuriate in its 200,000 litres of fresh, filtered water entering each pool daily and drinking in the pure mountain air. Day 6 and 150 km later we’re in Ainsworth in Kootenay Lake, reluctantly about to have the final soak in the last of our sixpack. Intrigued by tales of the magical caves here we splash there first. It’s 44°C in this steamy grotto, so we soon start dissolving. Time now to try the cooler pool before rinsing our suits and turning our thoughts to Osoyoos once again. Tomorrow we’ll be savouring a final treat, dinner at Nk’mip’s Mica restaurant, raising our glasses of their riesling to celebrate a great road trip. Burn fat fast with this one workout. High intensity interval training (aka HIITs), are extremely effective for transforming your body — no matter what your current state of fitness is. In a study published in The Journal of Obesity they found that this type of training reduced their participants subcutaneous fat and abdominal fat (the silent killer of them all) better than any other type of exercise. In addition to fat loss, the HIIT workouts also improved the subject’s anaerobic and aerobic ability, significantly lowered their insulin resistance and increased both their muscle tone and bone strength. HIIT workouts also stimulate muscle-building hormones like growth hormone and IGF-1. This puts

your body in a perfect state to build lean mass and lean muscle mass burns a lot of calories. In addition to the hormone response, interval training also develops the cardiovascular system by driving your heart rate up (during the periods of intense work). This in turn increases your aerobic ability while also strengthening your heart. During the short periods of recovery, you will also increase your recovery capabilities — meaning you’ll be able to recover faster in future workouts. And, because you are in oxygen debt (ie. gasping for breath) it will take your body longer after the workout to get back to normal. This will result in a revved metabolism for hours after you finish your workout. To perform a HIIT workout the individual cycles through periods of intense training with periods of recovery. A typical interval of intense exercise should last anywhere from six seconds to four minutes, with the goal of reaching

a target heart rate 90 per cent or higher. Recovery is active, meaning you are still moving with your heart rate now dropping to 70-80 per cent of your maximum. In Delta we have the perfect park for a HIIT workout — Fred Gingell Stairs! Try this workout next time you are at the stairs. Warm-up for 5-10 minutes and then perform 30 bicycle crunches, 20 bridges and 10 mountain climbers. Once completed a full round go up and down the wooden stairs three times. After your third set of stairs perform another round of your core moves. Continue to cycle through this Core HIIT for either a period of time (20-30 minutes), or set of a goal of doing a certain number of cycles. Just remember to warm up prior to and to only go down and up the wooden stairs — not the entire length. PJ Wren is a personal trainer who loves the stairs and loves to sweat. She can be reached at www.fitnesswithpj.com.

Be sure to check for decayed roots anne marrison

Green Room This week Anne answers a reader’s question. Q: I’ve sent you a picture of my Phalenopsis orchid which I’ve had since 2013. There are still new shoots growing with flower buds, but part of the roots are coming over the edge of the pot and drying out. It looks as if it needs to be replanted. The soil is mostly moss. How soon should I move it into another container? David Chia, Burnaby A: Phalenopsis orchids normally grow new roots

W O N

outside the pot. This is because in the wild they grow on trees and are used to very humid air around their roots. But in arid house temperatures, these exposed roots do tend to dry out and eventually need shelter in a pot. Meanwhile, those roots would love to be misted at least once a day. Every second year is the best timing for repotting. By then the old roots down in the pot are decayed and the moss/bark mix they’re in is probably decayed also. But, you can’t know whether your orchid was newly repotted when you bought it. If it was, then it may not be due for repotting just yet. It might be helpful to lift your orchid out of the pot

and check whether there are decayed roots down there. Also check whether the potting mix is in good shape or brown and in a state of soillike disintegration. Spring is the best time for repotting, after your phalenopsis has bloomed. So if the photo of your phalenopsis is recent and it is blooming now – and depending what you find when you check the deeper roots, it might be best to transplant now as flowers fade. If the potting mix doesn’t look ready, you could wait until after the next bloom cycle. Garden centres sell special orchid mixes for phalenopsis. Anne Marrison is happy to answer garden questions. Piper wears two hats

It’s not unusual for a bagpiper to belong to two pipe bands at the same time, but in the case of Maurice (Moe) Coll, a retired Vancouver Police Department sergeant, there are some unique circumstances. One is a Scottish Highland pipe band, with clan tartan kilt and feather bonnet; the other is an Irish Celtic pipes and drums band, with plain kilt and a caubeen (beret). There are also subtle differences in the music played and the overall sound of the two genres. It was once summed up as the Irish are poets, but the Scots are warriors. This statement is, of course, open to discussion. It all began in early 2011 when Delta police Chief Jim Cessford spoke at a conference in Seattle. During conversation with one of the organizers, he learned Seattle was in the process of forming its own police pipes and drums. Cessford spoke with the president of the newlyformed Seattle Police Pipes and Drums, a conversation that eventually culminated in a joint concert, which also included the prestigious Boston Police Gaelic Column of Pipes and Drums. During his involvement in the concert organization, Coll provided advice based on his experience and became involved in the further development of the Seattle band. Born in County Limerick, Ireland, Coll came to Canada in 1957 with his parents and is intimately familiar with the nuances of Irish pipes and drums music, his father having been an avid follower of Celtic pipe bands. He has been a drummer and piper for many years and includes several local bands in his resume, including a dozen years with the Delta Police Pipe Band. Coll’s continuing contribution to the Seattle band

tion to the honour is one of gratified amazement. “The honour they have accorded me in accepting me as a full member of the band is typical of the friendliness and generosity I have felt,” he said. “Now that I have passed on the role of drum major in the Delta Police Pipe Band, I have the time to devote to helping and being a part of the SPP&D. Travelling to practices in Seattle poses no real problem as I listen to pipe band music and run through things in my mind so I am well prepared by the time I arrive.”

was recently recognized by a highly unusual gesture. Ryan Gallagher, president of the Seattle Police Pipes and Drums, said he was extremely impressed by how Coll handled the Delta band. “His very presence and quiet authority made me realize that he could be a tremendous help to our fledgling band,” said Gallagher. The Seattle band’s proposed trip to Ireland in September provided an opportunity to thank Coll for his help so he was invited along. Discussion took place among band members who decided it would be to their distinct advantage to include him as a full member. “Moe Coll’s help and guidance has been instrumental in us reaching the point where we recently performed at the memorial

Voted as Delta’s “Best Laser Clinic”

Beverly Brazier When we moved to Tsawwassen 3 years ago, I had already been taking semi-private Pilates sessions for 2 years. But nothing I had done held a patch to what I have accomplished or learned at the TWC. I am now able to (almost) keep up to my husband when we cycle.

LIVE BY CHOICE Clients seek out Pilates to deal with pain or injuries or simply get back in shape. They see how they are being held back from life due to pain, fear of falling and that their body can’t support them in the activities they want to participate in. They begin Pilates and in most cases, after only 10 sessions 2x per week (that’s only 5 weeks), a whole new world of possibility opens up. Their pain is decreased or diminished, they feel stronger, have more energy, are sleeping better, trust their body, they smile more, are happier. They start to travel, ride bikes, walk, be social, productivity at work increases. This new vibrancy is taken into their life and shared with their family, friends, and colleagues.

Begin with our Jumpstart Package and in 3 sessions feel the difference Pilates can make for your life. 5514 12TH AVE (beside Panago Pizza)

I am stronger, healthier and happier than I can remember. TWC has also been a caring and safe haven for me during stressful life circumstances. I can’t recommend TWC highly enough. Many thanks – to each and every one of you. Beverly

Take a trip down spice road with Earthwise Looking beyond the first year of grief Feeling adventurous? Longing for a taste of the exotic? Then mark your calendar for Saturday, July 5 and follow the Spice Road to the Earthwise Farm and Garden for a taste of the East. Spice Road Market is a unique Delta event that invites people to discover local cultural diversity through art and food. This year Spice Road Market focuses on the traditions of India, challenging local chefs to take part in a vegetarian “black

box” competition by using organic produce from the Earthwise Farm to create a signature dish that reflects the culinary traditions of India. The contents of the black box are a secret, but the chefs can add spices and other ingredients of their choice to create their dish. A $10 advance purchase ticket ($15 at the door) allows you to sample all of the dishes and vote for your favourite.

In addition to the culinary arts and spices of India, Spice Road Market will showcase music, dance and fine art. Delta Arts Council will host an exhibit featuring Eoghan Moriarity’s photographic tour of India. Award-winning musician Akhil Jobanputra and the Indian Classical Music Society of Vancouver will perform traditional Indian music featuring a variety of classical instruments. There will be a variety of Indian-themed

vendors, Mehndi artists and a special Kids Zone offering an Earthwise twist to traditional mosaic art. Spice Road Market runs from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Admission is free and food tickets may be purchased in advance. The Earthwise Farm and Garden are located at 6400-3rd Ave., Tsawwassen. For more information, visit www.earthwisesociety.bc.ca, email info@earthwisesociety.bc.ca or call 604-946-9828.

Often when we are bereaved, we think about looking for grief support in the early months after someone close to us has died. We may want to understand the vast range of reactions we are having, learn ways of supporting ourselves while grieving

or meet other people also experiencing this significant change. Sometimes after a year or more, our questions and needs may change. While we are familiar with periodic waves of grief, we may start to have questions about what moving on means, and about

how we can incorporate and make sense of this loss within the wider scope of our lives. The Centre for Supportive Care in Ladner is hosting Beyond the First Year, a six week series, starting July 24 for widows and widowers who are looking for an opportunity to

speak with other individuals experiencing similar grief. Topics will include: looking at current grief challenges, identifying one’s personal mourning style (what helps and hinders) considering one’s goals with respect to adjusting to being widowed, examining the effects of loss on one’s

social life and identifying ways of moving on. The series will take place Thursdays from July 24 to Sept. 7. For more information about this series or other programs offered by the Delta Hospice Society, call Margaret Fletcher at 604948-0660.

On June 14 the ladies of the Ladner Lawn Bowling Club prepared a lunch for the men of the club. A special song, written by one of the club’s ladies, thanked the men for all they do to make the club a special place. In lieu of the traditional tie or socks as gifts, the men were given something they all could use: a roll of duct tape.

Islanders decide to change course Junior lacrosse club trades two of its top players to Coquitlam including leading scorer Eli McLaughlin BY

Local Tides

mbooth@delta-optimist.com

A roller coaster season took an unexpected sharp turn this week for the Delta Islanders. For the second straight year, the junior “A” lacrosse club has become “sellers” on the eve of the league trade deadline, sending leading scorer Eli McLaughlin and defensive standout Taylor Northway to the defending champion Coquitlam Adanacs. In return, Delta receives 20-year-old Spencer Stevens, the Adanacs’ first round pick in the 2015 midget draft and future considerations. The deal comes just days after the Islanders declared they would be aggressively trying to improve their roster at the deadline in an effort to close the gap between themselves and the Adanacs, along with the first place New West Salmonbellies. However, just like a season ago, the club was unable to complete a deal with the fifth place Nanaimo Timbermen that would have brought veteran goalie Peter Dubenski to Delta, along with two other top players. Dubenski was acquired by the Islanders in 2012 and had a key role in their run to the league final. When the asking price for the trio increased, the Islanders opted to go the other direction. They will now have five of the eight top picks in next year’s draft which is for graduating midget players on teams not affiliated with junior “A” clubs. Ironically, McLaughlin was the centre piece of last year’s mega-deal with New West that stipulated he would be back in a Delta uniform in 2014. The thought was the Islanders would gain some future prospects and also be ready to take a serious run at their first-ever title. However, they have just one win in a combined six games against the Adanacs and Salmonbellies en route to a fourth place 10-8-0 record. A telling tale was a recent pivotal five game stretch against the league’s top three teams, including Victoria, that saw Delta go 1-4.

LISA KING/COQUITLAM NOW

The departure of leading scorer Eli McLaughlin will mean expanded roles from some of the Delta Islanders’ younger players including homegrown product Evan Messenger (above). “This was really a tough thing to deal with because I have never been a ‘seller’ at the deadline,” said Islanders assistant general manager and head coach Greg Rennie. “In the end, the price was just too high for where this team sits right now and I told Coquitlam ‘lets make a deal.’ That only came after literally making phone calls across the country (looking for help). “I do feel really bad for our third year guys that we couldn’t get something done. But I also had to factor in we have 14 (eligible) firstyear players and this team is really set-up for the next two years and

beyond with all the picks we have. The future considerations (that will be announced in October) is also a huge part of this deal.” Rennie did say the rest of his veterans are staying put as the only two real interested trading partners — Coquitlam and New West — already have stacked rosters. Delta still has a chance to finish third with three relatively easy games remaining, including on Saturday against last place Port Coquitlam at Sungod Arena (7:30 p.m.). That could set-up a potential semi-final series with the Adanacs and the three players involved in the

deal would not play — based on the agreement between the two teams. Northway, in fact, will return to Delta next year for his final season of junior. Rennie is hoping some of his younger players will step up in McLaughlin’s absence, notably local product Evan Messenger who will now move up top with first unit power play. “We are hardly throwing in the towel on the season,” added Rennie. “This is a great opportunity for some of the younger key guys, that we really will be counting on, to grow as players.”

Blue Jays complete perfect run to win Midget AA tier 2 playoff title

Ladner Blue Jays capped an up and down Midget AA baseball season in style by capturing the Interlock League tier two playoff championship. The Blue Jays rolled through round-robin play with four straight wins — toppling a pair of teams from Cloverdale, as well as White Rock and the Tsawwassen Rangers. They outscored their opponents 54-8 in the process as the bats were alive and the pitching outstanding in what proved to be a testament to the true skill level of this group. Ladner faced a tough semi-final opponent in the North Delta Cardinals. The game was close throughout but, again, strong pitching and timely hitting prevailed as the Jays pulled out the victory 5-3. This set up a rematch in the final between Ladner and Tsawwassen.a The championship was a well played game that demonstrated a high level of skill and determination by

The Islanders’ journey to the podium began with a 5-5 tie with the Ridge Meadows Burrards, followed by a hard-fought 3-2 loss to the host Saints. The boys then concluded round-robin play with a clutch 5-4 win over league rival Burnaby Lakers. With the preliminary games now finished, the Islanders anxiously awaited notice of their placement Saturday evening. They were ecstatic

to learn they had a chance at earning a medal in the bronze game against the Oceanside Sharks. An exciting and entertaining battle saw the teams tied at 4-4 at the end of regulation time. Parents on both sides cheered and winced as the competition continued through 15 of the 20-minute sudden death overtime period. Finally, the Islanders placed a beautiful pass into an unprotected net after the Oceanside goalie was drawn to the far side.
