O Canada!
Two local residents, former TFN chief Kim Baird (left) and acclaimed Haida fashion designer Dorothy Grant are among 12 British Columbians receiving the Order of Canada, Rideau Hall announced earlier this week.
Baird named to Order of Canada
A pair of Delta residents have been named to the Order of Canada. Former Tsawwassen First Nation chief Kim Baird as well as acclaimed Haida fashion designer Dorothy Grant are among 12 British Columbians who will receive the honour for 2014, according to an official announcement Monday from Rideau Hall. Named as a Member of the Order of Canada, Baird was recognized for her contributions to the social and economic well being of her people, notably in securing a historic urban treaty. ry leadership and vision by negotiating and implementing the first modern treaty in the B.C. Treaty Negotiations Process, states the B.C. Treaty Commission. Baird is a strong advocate for the recognition of aboriginal rights and title through processes of reconciliation, notes the commission. Also named a Member of the Order of Canada, Grant was recognized for her contributions to the fashion industry as a Haida artist, designer and mentor. She built an international following for her Haida-infused couture clothing and accessories lines.

Summer school has been cancelled, the Delta school district announced yesterday. “All academic courses that were scheduled to run this summer are cancelled,” school superintendent Dianne Turner wrote in a letter posted on the district’s website. “To mitigate the impact of no summer cours-
es, administrators are developing options for completion of these courses in the fall.” Summer school cannot proceed as planned due to the ongoing labour dispute between the B.C. Teachers’ Federation and the B.C. Public School Employers’ Association, Turner explained.

It’s looking like another Delta heritage building is about to face the wrecking ball. Having seen better days, the Kittson House on Highway 10 (9230 Ladner Trunk Rd.) will be torn down sometime in the near future unless someone steps forward to save it. Sunny Bay Greenhouses Ltd. constructed a hothouse operation on the property near the Highway 99 interchange, but agreed not to seek a demolition permit for the gradually crumbling house on the site in order to give the municipality time to seek alternative locations. That process has lasted well over a year. The owner of the site has indicated they’d like to remove the house soon, prompting the heritage advisory commission to make one last ditch attempt through advertisement to find someone interested in moving and restoring the structure. The big problem, however, is that restoring the house in its current location, including fixing structural issues, would be in the hundreds of thousands of dollars, according to an expert who conducted an evaluation of the structure. Moving the house would be just as cost prohibitive. Coun. Jeannie Kanakos, chair of Delta’s Heritage Advisory Commission, said a number of people have expressed interest in saving the house. “We’ve basically done all that we can and we have not found someone willing to take on the cost. We want to make sure we cover as much social media as possible to anybody who might be interested in it or pass the word,” she said. Delta pioneer Robert Kittson built a barn at the site in 1895 and the house in 1907. Kittson ran a mixed farming

The house is listed as having a high heritage value and is on Delta’s heritage inventory, but it’s not on a heritage registry that provides greater protection. The barn is now gone and the house, seen by thousands of passing motorists daily, could soon follow if someone doesn’t step forward. “It’s known as the old yellow house has and it’s definitely an historic monument. minutes of the Heritage Advisory Commission, it’s been on almost every agenda for the last couple of years and we’ve been trying to figure out what we can do and exploring every option possible,” said Kanakos. “At this point, we know the owner is really coming to the end of his rope in terms of what we can do, but we’re still hoping there is someone out there who cam relocate it and restore it.” The heritage commission has completed a proposed new municipal heritage strategy that’s currently in draft form. strategy was done in 1997, but it was only a five-year plan. Kanakos said the next step is to refer the new strategy to a business planning workshop of council because it has “significant financial implications.” During a commission discussion on the strategy, it was noted one of the main challenges is the limited availability of conservation incentives. The commission retained heritage consultant Donald Luxton to help formulate the new plan, a strategy that has seven goals with 36 actions.

There are times in all of our lives when we need help. Maybe a disaster has struck — a devastating illness, a fire, an accident. Maybe we have a cause or charity we want to support. Or perhaps we are that proverbial person who has everything and we want to celebrate a special milestone in our lives by paying it forward. Glacier Media, which owns the Delta Optimist, wants to be there to help, too. It is launching
FundAid, a crowdfunding initiative that taps into its member newspapers’ deep ties to their communities. “The biggest challenge in any crowdfunding campaign is getting the word out,” says Martha Perkins, a former newspaper editor who is spearheading FundAid. “That’s what we’re good at. Our newspapers are built on a strong tradition of sharing stories and information that matter to our readers.” Perkins is available to help individuals and groups come up with effective
FundAid campaigns that will better ensure their success and will let editors know of campaigns that might be of particular interest to their readers. Member newspapers will also be running weekly ads for FundAid and will help spread the word through their social media channels. “We see this as a way to do some good in our communities,” says Alvin Brouwer, the president of Glacier Media’s community digital media and newspapers in the Lower Mainland.

Delta Coun. Sylvia Bishop has announced she’s seeking another term in this November’s civic election. A first-term councillor, Bishop said she’s proud of her record of working to protect and enhance Delta’s three unique communities. Citing the controversial Southlands development recently passed by Metro Vancouver, Bishop said she is dedicated to ensuring the commitments made by the developer and the city are followed through. “I’ll work to ensure the farmland given to Delta will be farmed while keeping in mind the sensitive forest and birding areas within the area,” she said. “And I’ll fight every day
to protect the character of Tsawwassen, despite the significant challenges created by this and other projects in the area.” So far, only two other councillors, Bruce McDonald and Ian Paton, have confirmed they will run again this fall, when council terms become four years in length. Lois Jackson, who has been mayor since 1999, also has yet to announce her intentions. Announcements are expected shortly. The only certainty is that a newcomer will claim the seat that has finally be vacated by Scott Hamilton, who became the Liberal MLA for Delta North in last year’s provincial election. The civic election is set for Nov. 15.

Alleged spree ends with arrest Delta police first received call about suspicious shed fire in Ladner
A man is facing several charges after an alleged crime spree in a Ladner neighbourhood over the weekend. It all began at around 5:30 p.m. Saturday when Delta police officers were called to a suspicious shed fire in the 4800-block of 45B Avenue. As officers were investigating the fire, they were rerouted to a call of a break and enter in progress just a block away on 44B Avenue.
In that case, a woman had seen a man walking away from her home allegedly wearing some items that belonged to her son, said Sgt. Sarah Swallow. The son followed the suspect down the street and managed to recover some of the stolen items, she said. The man then fled through some backyards and entered another home in the 4900block of 44B Avenue. Swallow said the residents of that home called
police and gave a similar description of the suspect officers were already looking for. “He was wearing a pretty specific T-shirt,” she said. Swallow said that thanks to alert residents, police quickly caught up with the suspect and arrested him. Police dogs were also brought in to help track down and recover some of the items taken from one of the homes. Swallow said that Ryan
Christie, of no fixed address, was arrested and is facing two charges of breaking and entering and one charge of obstructing a police officer, for initially giving officers a false name. She said the investigation into the shed fire is still ongoing but additional charges are pending. Christie was held in police custody and made his first court appearance on Monday.

Six-year-old Javan Welfing, who is battling a rare form of terminal brain cancer, high fives dad Tim Welfing after dunking him in the dunk tank at the BC Ferry Health & Wellness Fundraiser held June 24 at Ladner’s Memorial Park. The event was organized to raise funds to help the family cover costs while they relocate from Victoria to the Lower Mainland to be closer to B.C. Children’s Hospital for treatment.
Close to $5,000 raised for family
Last month’s fundraiser benefiting the family of a little boy battling a terminal brain tumour raised close to $5,000. The BC Ferry Health & Wellness Fundraiser held on June 24 at Memorial Park in Ladner raised $4,920.90 for six-year-old Javan Welfing and his family. Javan is battling diffuse intrinsic potine giloma (DIPG) — a rare inoperable tumour that grows in the brain stem. DIPG usually only strikes young children — between the ages of four and 10 — and most die within a year. Because of the location and the nature of DIPG tumours, surgery is not an option; the disease is mostly resistant to traditional chemotherapy and other treatments. He was diagnosed just before Christmas last year. Dad Tim Welfing, a BC Ferries engineer, said that he and wife Cami noticed that the muscles in Javan’s face weren’t always working properly. Initially they
were not too concerned, he said, but brought it up at a routine doctor’s appointment. That’s when everything changed. Javan was immediately sent to the emergency room in Victoria for a CAT scan and then airlifted to B.C. Children’s Hospital in Vancouver. There the family received the devastating diagnosis. Javan completed an initial round of radiation and chemotherapy at the end of February and is currently undergoing maintenance chemo every six weeks. He has lost a significant amount of weight and does not have much energy now, but on the day of the fundraiser Javan was happy and jumping up and down. Last month’s fundraiser, was organized by fellow BC Ferries employees Erika Brockhausen and Sue McBain, who both live in Tsawwassen. Donations can also be made through a TD Canada Trust account set up for the family, through account number 057406364149.

Tsawwassen’s Bruce Fougner is going on a 13-day, 1,500-kilometre cycling trip to raise money for cancer care at Delta Hospital. Fougner, a Delta Hospital Foundation board director, will depart for Calgary next Tuesday. Cancer is “near and dear to a lot of people,” Fougner said, adding he thought the cycling trek would be a “bucket list thing to do.” He has been training by
cycling to work and also riding on the weekend. His planned route includes cycling through Manning Park and the Okanagan, over Rogers Pass and then north through the Columbia Icefield to Jasper. Fougner will be cycling with IRIS president Francis Jean for the initial stretch and once in Jasper they’ll meet up with more cyclists taking part in the IRIS Challenge, a cancer fundraising ride. The group will travel back down the Columbia Icefield to Lake Louise and
Banff to before finishing in Calgary. Fougner noted he and his wife are billeting two riders taking part in the Tour de Delta. “So I’m hoping to get some inspiration and coaching from them,” he said. Fougner also noted he’ll be accepting pledges at an event at TD Canada Trust in Tsawwassen Sunday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Visit dhfoundation.ca/ build-a-page/370 to donate or http://iris.ca/challengeiris for more on the IRIS Challenge.

Big fight breaks out at engagement party The purpose of the Crime Beat is to educate and inform the public about some of the property crime trends occurring in South Delta and other files of interest. If you see anything occurring that you believe to be suspicious, call 911 for in progress crimes and emergencies or 604-946-4411 for other assistance. The following are some of the calls the Delta Police responded to in the previous week: Tsawwassen • June 24, 6 a.m., 700block 53rd Street: Citizen brought into police headquarters a purse he had found at the secondary school. From the ID in the purse the police contacted the owner’s mother who had her daughter pickup the purse later in the day. • June 25, 4:29 p.m., 200-block English Bluff Road: Complainant reported he had lost his black iPhone 5 while he was running the stairs at Gingell Park. Report taken for information and insurance purposes. • June 27, 4:13 a.m., 5100-block Springs Blvd: A found wallet was brought
into police headquarters by a citizen. The wallet is a men’s black leather Calvin Klein containing several bank cards and cash. All attempts to contact the owner have been unsuccessful. The wallet lodged into exhibits for safekeeping and the owner can claim on identification. • June 28, 12:56 p.m., 1200-block 56th Street: Complainant reported while she was in a local business transferring a vehicle to her name someone stole a new set of plates off the back bumper of the vehicle. A search of the area proved negative. Information regarding the stolen plates to be entered in the police data base. • June 28, 1:51 a.m., 1600-block 56th Street: Complainant reported a group of approximately 20 people fighting after an engagement party got out of control. Police spoke with multiple attendees who advised that a cousin on the bride’s side started to fight with some of the groom’s side, allegedly punching one. Multiple family members then joined in the
fight, with minor injuries to both sides. All witnesses and guests were intoxicated and did not want charges, stating they would handle the incident as a family. • June 29, 1:18 a.m., 1300-block 56th Street: A report received that several youth were on the roof of the mall. Police attended and observed the youth but were unable to apprehend them before they jumped off the building on the opposite side and fled the area in various directions. Police spoke with security guard who stated it was unlikely there would be any damage to the roof. Ladner •June 23, 5:28 p.m., 2600-block 64th Street: Complainant parked and locked her vehicle near the dyke and went for a walk with her friend. When she returned to her vehicle the rear driver’s window was found to be completely smashed. The suspects gained entry to the vehicle and stole the complainant’s back pack which contained keys, Nexus cards, and personal cheques. Police advised the complainant to
cancel the Nexus cards and cheques and to change her locks. No suspects at this time. • June 23, 10:09 p.m., 5700-block Ladner Trunk Road: Complainant reported she had left her purse in
the patio of the fast food restaurant and when she returned to retrieve the purse it was gone. The staff indicated the purse had not been turned into the restaurant. The complainant contacted her financial
institution and cancelled all banking cards. Police will examine the video surveillance in an attempt to identify a possible suspect. Information re the stolen items will be added to the police data base.

MURPHY’S LAW It’s looking more and more like the Alex Fraser Bridge will be the first “older” crossing in the region to feature tolls. I don’t think there’s any way around it. We’re likely the better part of a decade away from the implementation of tolls, but it’s getting increasingly difficult to see the crossing, which is closing in on its 30th birthday, stay toll-free for the long run. As its neighbouring spans are replaced by tolled crossings, and an increasing number of drivers look for that alwayspopular free alternative, the strain placed on the Alex Fraser will be so great the province will have no other choice but to act. We’ve already got a tolled Port Mann Bridge sending drivers in search of a free option and when a bridge is built to replace the George Massey Tunnel, expected to be operational by 2022, it’s an almost certainty it would be tolled too. Throw in a tolled replacement for the Pattullo Bridge, which is one of the key planks of the long-range vision recently unveiled by the Mayors’ Council on Regional Transportation, and, within the next decade or so, you’ll have three of the four crossings of the south arm charging drivers for the privilege of getting across the river. A New Westminster delegation was in Delta earlier this year lamenting what a tolled Port Mann has meant for their community, which has been inundated by drivers looking for a free way across the Fraser. Multiply that threefold and you’ll get the predicament the Alex Fraser, and its faithful users, will be in once all the new crossings are in place. It will be unbearable and once we get to that point those who are calling the shots in Victoria won’t have much choice but to revise the policy of only collecting tolls on new infrastructure. I suspect that will be the catalyst that will finally force a decision on road pricing or some other form of collecting fees from everyone who contributes to the congestion of the Lower Mainland’s road network, and not just those who travel across new bridges. With just the Golden Ears and Port Mann tolled at the moment, the inequity only runs so deep, but as more tolled crossings come on board, forcing some drivers to pay and others to escape government clutches, the cry for an equitable situation will surely intensify. For those who have been crossing it free of charge since it opened in 1986, tolls on the Alex Fraser will seem like a cruel joke, but leaving it status quo will almost certainly be worse.
MP answers on radio towers queries make no sense STEVE GRAHAM COMMUNITY COMMENT On June 23 local MP KerryLynne Findlay presented a summary of her achievements with respect to the relocation of KRPI to Point Roberts to Delta council before a generally skeptical audience in the council chambers. Findlay started out by stating that “KRPI is an American company that owns the radio station and leases air time on AM 1550 to BBC Broadcasting Company of Richmond B.C.” In fact BBC Broadcasting Co. of Kent, Washington owns the KRPI license and leases air time to Sher-E-Punjab of Richmond B.C. Having stated that she has been working on the file for over a year, she still doesn’t know who the proponent is. Later in the presentation she states that she has met with the project’s proponents and received assurance that they would resolve interference issues.
Since she doesn’t know who the proponent is, one wonders whom she met with. I asked a member of her staff whom she met with and when, and he refused to tell me. Findlay also stated orally in her presentation that BBC Broadcasting had promised to resolve blanketing interference issues in Canada, and that the FCC had relied on this commitment in making its decision to approve the relocation application. However, the FCC approved the relocation application on May 14, 2012 and BBC’s commitment (prepared by its Bellingham lawyer and addressed to Whatcom County) is dated Sept 30, 2013. It is hard to see how the FCC relied on a commitment that was made a year later. A legal opinion prepared for the Cross Border Coalition by a Tsawwassen lawyer in June indicates that KRPI’s commitment is not enforceable in Canada. Findlay reiterated her comments reported in the May 21 Optimist that “the FCC was aware of Tsawwassen when considering the [BBC] application.” Two coalition members requested that she document this previously undisclosed information on May 21. Her response was: “I have asked Minster Moore’s office to

provide me with clarification and to probe further with the FCC on these points.” After a month she provided the rationale in her memorandum: “The FCC confirms that it normally provides a waiver as populated areas often encroach on a radio station after it is built.” This is a non-answer to the enquiry and makes no sense. In this case the issue is not potential future population growth, but rather that Tsawwassen already exists and it was not considered by the FCC. BBC itself admits this in a submission to the FCC: “the FCC did not raise any issues or ask for an amendment concerning the potential for blanketing over Canadian territory.” In summary the Government of Canada did not object to the relocation, and Findlay and Moore continue to refuse to write a letter to the FCC requesting that it review and revoke its approval. July 4, 2014 The Delta Optimist A9 Letters to the Editor
Striking was not a choice but the moral thing to do
Editor: Re: Family incomes take hit as self-centered teachers continue their full-scale strike, letter to the editor, June 25 I am a parent of two young public school children and was disappointed to read this letter. For 12 years, public education has been suffering in the areas of class size and composition due to legislation which illegally stripped this language from the teacher’s collective agreement. This was deemed illegal in the courts twice but, rather than investing in public education, the B.C. government is appealing this
decision and it will go back to court in the fall. Going to court three times as well as the hefty fines due to past job action explains why the BCTF has no money for a strike fund. I am proud of teachers for being the only ones to stand up and say that the stripping of class size and composition was wrong and I think that they are setting an excellent example for my children. As for the comments about the impact on family incomes, please keep in mind that many teachers have families too. As the sole income earner for my family, and a teacher, I am also feel-
ing the stress of having to pay additional fees for my children to attend day care while I stand at a picket line and don’t earn a wage. My lost wages will never be recovered but the bigger picture is to properly fund public education. I understand that it’s hard not to jump to conclusions based on the media onslaught, paid for with our tax dollars, under the guise of “BC Education Plan.” For me, striking was not a choice but was the moral thing to do as a law-abiding citizen and someone who is passionate about my children and my career. Valid reason for loud motorcycle exhausts Editor: Re: Obnoxious bikers disturb peace quiet for others, letter to the editor, June 20 While I am sure the Prius-driving wine crowd must find motorcycle exhaust terribly disturbing when taking in their morning rituals, I strongly suggest that they pause in their insult for a second and consider that motorcycles have exhaust which are by default louder than that of a car for a very valid reason. Car drivers routinely prove themselves time and time again to be so self absorbed in their cellphones, in car
entertainment systems, coffee cups and of course, who can forget children in the back seat, that they are very often blind to the motor-
“Just like not all drivers are good and courteous drivers, not all motorcyclists are rude and discourteous.” cycles around them on the road. It is for this reason that most motorcyclists choose a motorcycle with an exhaust
note that asks for the attention of the automobile drivers around them. Just like not all drivers are good and courteous drivers, not all motorcyclists are rude and discourteous. Be a little tolerant and open-minded. Instead of getting angry or annoyed the next time a motorcycle’s loud pipes interrupt your quiet for a few seconds, stop and think about the safety of the rider and be glad he or she is alive and well. In other words, don’t think only of yourself! Scott Greene

Teachers advocating for the rights of students
Editor: Re: Family incomes take hit as self-centered teachers continue their full-scale strike, letter to the editor, June 25 I am deeply troubled by Don Merrell’s statement that teachers, by going on strike to protest decades of cuts to B.C.’s education system, are “totally into themselves.” Every teacher understands that families who have had to make arrangements for child care in the last two weeks of June have been disadvantaged. Teachers have families too, and trust me, we are also suffering financial loss as we have been partially locked out by our employer (a loss of 10 per cent of wages per day) and we are now receiving zero strike pay for the past two weeks. Our strike fund has been depleted by paying for lawyers to challenge the B.C. government every time they fight the Supreme Court rulings that support improved learning conditions for B.C. students.
If this dispute were simply about wages, it might have been settled last week; but we are sacrificing our pay right now to stand up for much more crucial issues in our education system: class size and composition. Mr. Merrell calls teachers “self-centered.” He questions why we have established a food bank and given out food vouchers to help some teachers. Well, we have first and second-year teachers who worked this year for less than $30,000 and who have been laid off. They could use some assistance, even if it is minimal. This is what teachers are all about: helping people who need it, and teaching students about the importance of social justice. This is why every year, teachers in every school organize fundraisers and food drives and put together hampers with our students to donate to local food banks and families in need in our communities. Mr. Merrell states that teachers “have set a very
poor example for our students to follow in life.” I disagree wholeheartedly. I think we are setting a significant, positive example about the importance of standing up to bullies, which is what our current government is acting like. We are demonstrating the importance of advocating for the rights of those people who lack the power to advocate for themselves: in this case, we are advocating for the rights of students to have a better-funded education system. Currently, each of our B.C. students receives $1,000 less funding than the average Canadian student. I see first-hand every day how that lack of funding is hurting kids, and in turn, our future society. So, please know that our job action is not fuelled by “self-centered” reasons. Thank you very much to all of those parents who have supported us as we fight to improve conditions for all of our students. Dana Huff Teacher Delta Secondary School

Spontaneity or structure...
The beauty, the warmth and the lure of summer are officially and fully upon us. It is amazing how quickly the grey skies and rain can be wiped from memory when we enter this amazing summer weather. If we are sitting at a desk through these hot days we can hardly wait to get outside. The spontaneity of heading to the beach or hitting the open road, the vacation time off seems to take over our every thought. Yet we find ourselves caught in the pressure of deadlines, the push of work imposed expectations, family schedule responsibilities. Structured frameworks of life that so are necessary, which provide the financial resources to plan and enjoy our free time, that establishes the relationships through which we share
the adventures and memories. In spite of these vital structures we yearn for that spontaneity, that freedom, which all too often is only a fleeting moment that makes us, crave more. It’s such a rat race, like being stuck on a treadmill going nowhere. Instead of being torn between our human desires and needs Paul directs our attention what true freedom is. In Roman’s 6: 16 we read, “Offer yourselves to sin (selfish human desire), for instance, and it’s your last free act. But offer yourselves to the ways of God and the freedom never quits.” The Message: When we allow ourselves to be a blessing to others we find that we are blessed in return. If it’s a beautiful day outside, all the better.

uthor Jim Bell has released a revised version of his book of Irish tales. A Year in Eire — Inspirations from the Emerald Isle is as much a kind of tourist manual as it is a book of inspirations, he explains. Bell, who lives in Tsawwassen, changed the title, added photos courtesy of the Irish tourism board and changed the formatting for his new version. He also did some “fine-tuning” and “tinkering.” Bell, 69, uses folk tales, poems by well-known poets, quotes from Irish authors and his own stories from his many trips to Ireland in the book. “Anybody can read [it] and get a little inspiration for the day,” he says. Bell, who’s Canadian and of Scottish descent, married into an Irish family.

Tsawwassen’s Jim Bell has released a revised version of his book, A year in Eire — Inspirations from the Emerald Isle.
He says he’s been travelling to Ireland for over four decades, making the trip every two years or so. Bell says he loves the country. He lists off a number of reasons as to why including the history, scenery, the friendliness of the people and the literature, citing famous authors like Seamus Heaney, W.B. Yeats and Oscar Wilde. “These guys just intrigue me.” He does refer to Christian values in the book but says he doesn’t “bible pound.” “It has kind of a spiritual bent. It expresses my faith.” Bell has taught French and Japanese in England and Vancouver and currently teaches English in Vancouver. His book was published by Xulon Press. A Year in Eire — Inspirations from the Emerald Isle is available from Amazon, Barnes and Noble and the publisher’s website.

Georgia’s coast flush with nature and history BY
JOHN GEARY
A
Optimist contributor
t first glance, it looks like just a log floating near the right shore of Georgia’s slow-moving Mayhall River. But as we paddle closer in our kayaks, I realize my eyes are playing tricks on me. It’s an alligator. Something catches the corner of my eye on the left. I quickly turn my head, and see water ripple where something has just disappeared. Glancing in the direction the ripple seemed to be heading, I’m rewarded with another ‘gator sighting as its head pops up, about 10 yards away. Awesome! We’re just 10 minutes out from the lodge on Eagle Island, paddling with guide Dan Cressette of Altamaha Coastal Tours, our morning adventure off to a good start. The island is one of a series of coastal islands off the south coast of Georgia, just a few hours away from
Jacksonville, Florida. Alligators are not the only wildlife keeping us company. We spot a boattailed grackle, the first of many of the shorebird species we’ll see. Eventually we reach a junction with the Darien River, paddling a short distance along its waters to Escape Island, a spot favoured for camping. We’re not stopping for that long, though, just for a break and a natural history lesson from our guide. This part of the world has a very interesting mix of plants and animals, as it’s a transition zone, a border between northern and southern forests, so both exotic deciduous and coniferous trees call it home. Georgia boasts plenty of swamps and jungle-like areas — but we also find yucca plants on this island, along with cedar trees along with short-leaf pine trees. After our interpretive talk ends, we take advantage of the incoming tide to use a shortcut, paddling through some tall grasses where 10 minutes before, there had

Paddling back to the lodge, we spy numerous herons and cormorants — and plenty of fish, too: mullets jump out of the river, and even a garfish shows itself. Ten minutes away from the lodge, I call out, “Gator
at 12 o’clock!” as Cressette touches paddles with me and says, “Good spot!” We paddle past, watching just his nostrils and eyes sticking above the surface of the water. Pulling back up to the dock, I spy a turkey vulture circling overhead. Not this time, Mr. Vulture. We all made it back in one piece. A few days later, I find

an opposing current, allies in an attempt to try to push us back. But like the British, we win the day and make our way out to a small island with a nice beach for some lazy beach-combing. It feels good to get out of the kayaks and stretch our legs, enjoying the warmth of the day. Willets scurry around on the sand, and we see plenty of hermit crab holes in our wandering — but no crabs. Again, some of the vegetation reminds me of the contrasts in this land that’s not quite temperate, yet not quite tropical...not quite wetland, but not really desert: cacti peek up through the sands all along the island. As I climb out of the kayak at our takeout point, I reflect that while we may think of “swamps” when we hear Georgia mentioned, it is really a land of transition, a land of many surprises, even along its coastal islands. myself embarking on another kayak adventure in Georgia, this time with Southeast Adventures on St. Simon’s Island. Our group paddles into Postle Creek, a salt marsh that eventually takes us out to the ocean. We wind back and forth in the narrow channel, hearing the distinct “oka-dee!” call of red-winged blackbirds. Sometimes we get lucky and even spot one, along with an occasional egret, looking for fish for breakfast. Along the way, we learn about The Battle of Bloody Marsh fought here in 1742 between the British and Spanish, who both claimed the area as their own. The British repulsed the Spanish and eventually won control of St. Simon’s Island. The Spanish still held Florida, but eventually surrendered it to Britain at the end of the French and Indian War in 1763. As we paddle out of the marsh and into Gould’s Inlet, we fight our own battle against a stiff wind and

With new paintings by its award-winning artists on the walls in Gallery 1710, the South Delta Artists Guild presents a challenging new exhibition and sale that offers both food for thought and a feast for the eyes. Abstraction to Real run through July 27 and the work on show deals with two completely opposite aspects of art; one reflecting techniques to depict reality, going back many centuries (including 30,000 year-old cave paintings), and the other, abstraction, drawn entirely from the artist’s imagination. Drawing reality is something we do as children, given a crayon and a suggestion, and sometimes those early encouragements lead to a true artistic development. But making art out of the unknown, the unseeable, the thought, is much more

difficult, and perhaps that is why abstraction is a comparatively recent art form. American artists Jackson Pollock and Mark Rothko were two who removed reality from their art and became part of the new vision.
Reality in art is known to us all; we enjoy landscapes, portraits, animals, flowers, scathing cartoons, cityscapes — but only if they are done well. They take us into a world we know, or would like to know. At Gallery 1710,
that’s the feast for the eyes. Abstraction takes us into a new place, because we are looking at the expression of the artist’s mind, and what we see on the canvas is a mix of colour, brush strokes, shapes and skill, which speak to us is we like the painting. That’s the food for thought. Several guild members are well known for their abstract art; one is Sandra Taylor, winner of many art awards. Another is Lianna Klassen, who always paints on a square canvas or board. Abstraction to Real is open to the public 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday to Sunday and all are welcome to come and enjoy. Gallery 1710 is at 1710 56th Street in Tsawwassen, adjacent to the South Delta Recreation Centre, and is wheelchair accessible. Parking is plentiful and free. Junior B Islanders clinch first place
Two-sport standout Michael Mann is the 2014 recipient of the Kiwanis Delta Memorial Sports Award. The 16-year-old from Tsawwassen, who will be entering Grade 11 in September, is an up-and-coming talent in rugby and football.
Kiwanis Club’s Karel Ley presented Michael Mann with the 2014 Kiwanis Delta Memorial Sports Award. Mann just returned from Germany where he helped the B.C. Elite Sevens U16 mens rugby team place fifth at the Heidelberg Sevens. He regularly plays at the club level for the Delta-based Brit Lions. Mann is also a promising football talent who is looking forward to his first year at the high school level this fall with the South Delta Sun Devils. Kiwanis has been offering the $1,000 sports award since 2005 when it was created to inspire youth to reach international level competition leading up to the 2010 Winter Olympics.

Delta Islanders rallied in the third period for a big 7-6 road win over the Richmond Roadrunners last Friday to clinch top spot in the West Coast Junior Lacrosse League. The result gives Delta home floor advantage throughout the upcoming playoffs.
Trio of local soccer teams in Provincial Cup hunt U16 Celtic and U18 Blues battle for boys crowns in Richmond while U16 Blues will contend for title in Chilliwack Westminster United. Ladner’s round-robin group features Terrace Kermodes, Kelowna United and Richmond Athletics. The opposite side includes Westminster who are the defending provincial champions. The Blues will be battling their way to potentially earn another crack at CCB Elite. Tsawwassen fell 2-1 to its District 5 League rival in the Coastal Cup final as the Surrey squad rallied back from a 1-0 deficit. The locals will have to get through the Prince George Timberwolves, Terrace Kermodes and Saanich Fusion to reach the final. Meanwhile, the U16 Tsawwassen Blues are back at the Provincial “B” Cup Girls Championships for another year, coming off

Langenberg and Olivia Sheppard, along with Ladner’s Danae Derksen, helped Coastal FC captured the U18 Provincial Premier Cup last weekend with a 2-0 win over Coquitlam Metro Ford. Sydor and Derksen will be continuing their careers at Trinity Western University this fall while Langenberg has signed with UBC. Sheppard, who aged up to play at the U18 level this season, has also been named to the provincial U16 team roster. Other Delta players to earn provincial team roster spots include: Eric Swanson (U16), Brandon Bassi (U14), Taiyo Marzalik (U14), Maggie Larocque (U14) and Olivia Ortiz (U13). DDRC Masters rowers enjoy big medal haul down south Delta Deas Rowing Club’s masters program brought home 15 medals, including five gold, from the recent Northwest Regional Masters Championships. Hosted by U.S. Rowing at Vancouver Lake in Vancouver WA, this annual event always features tough competition as it serves as a qualifier for this month’s U.S. Rowing Masters Championships in New Jersey. In total, 49 clubs participated from B.C. to California with 943 entries. Delta Deas was small on numbers but big on results, finishing a commendable sixth overall behind some of the largest rowing clubs in the U.S. The club is now preparing for the Canadian Masters Championships, slated for July 19-20 at Burnaby Lake.
Sun Devils pair shine for Fraser Valley team in Orlando South Delta’s Laura Findlay and Danielle Madore helped the Fraser Valley Volleyball Club produce a historic result at the recent USA Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) Junior National Championships in Orlando, Florida. The U16 squad produced the best-ever finish by a Canadian team in the 41-year history of the championships, placing fifth overall. The Fraser Valley team featured 10 girls from four different clubs. Findlay is an outside hitter and Madore is a libero. After stellar results over the first two days against clubs from California, Indiana, Colorado, Virginia, Florida, Illinois, and Wisconsin, FVVC was attracting attention. The real upset occurred in day three when FVVC went up against the Sport Performance, ranked third in the nation. The Mizuno sponsored powerhouse from
Illinois were the defending champions and seemed poised and confident to do it again. In heart stopping point-for-point play, the FVVC girls battled to win in the third set in front of a thunderous crowd. The atmosphere was electric. Fraser Valley head coach David Carrasco, who also assistant coach of Trinity Western’s women’s volleyball team, went on to say that guiding the girls to victory against Sport Performance is a highlight of his coaching career. Fraser Valley were narrowly edged out of the medals by Mizuno Northern Lights from Minnesota. FVVC’s impressive fifth place means that each team member is considered an “All American.” Findlay and Madore are looking forward to the fall volleyball season as members of the two-time defending B.C. AAAA champion South Delta Sun Devils.
