Ayla Hamilton-James of Ladner gives Kolt Hewlett-Kaufman of Tsawwassen a boost to the water gun while cooling off at the Rotary WaterWorks in Diefenbaker Park Wednesday afternoon. Sunny skies and warm temperatures are in the forecast into next week.

Delta is preparing itself as the chances increase for a dangerous material spill by truck or rail. A new protocol between the municipality and rail companies is giving local responders a better grasp of the dangerous goods coming through Delta, said deputy fire Chief Paul Schofield. “What we have is a confidentiality agreement with the rail industry for all rail operating in Delta, and also with Transport Canada as well. So we receive regular information on the transportation of dangerous goods in the community,” he said. The protocol was a recommendation from Delta last year on rail safety issues. It followed last summer’s tragic train accident in of Lac-Mégantic, Quebec, where a 72-car train loaded with crude oil derailed, causing a massive explosion and fire that killed 47 people. Afterward, a Senate committee, already looking into the transportation of hazardous goods by rail, released a sweeping report, urging the government to launch an independent review of rail safety. The Federation of Canadian Municipalities would establish

Noting Delta is host to the country’s largest marine terminal, Mayor Lois Jackson submitted a list of recommendations, including identifying the most frequently transported dangerous goods and focusing training on dealing with those commodities. A proposed five-storey apartment building in Ladner is drawing the ire of nearby residents. The municipality recently received an application by development planner Alex Cauduro to construct a 47-unit building on four properties that have been consolidated at the corner of 47A Avenue and 48B Street. The application requires an Official Community Plan amendment to increase the maximum density allowed in the area as well as an amendment to the OCP and Ladner Area Plan to increase the maximum building height from the current three storeys. The application requires public consultation before going to Delta council. If the developer is successful in amending density and height restrictions, the flood gates will open, according to a resident who wrote one of several letters to the Optimist with concerns about the project. The resident said a precedent would be set that would negatively change the character of the village. Others have echoed such concerns and building height was an issue during recent discussions on redeveloping the Ladner waterfront.. An information meeting

on the proposal is set for Wednesday, July 16 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Ladner Community Centre. Meanwhile, another large multi-family development has recently received preliminary approval from council. Architect Peter Dandyk is proposing a four-storey, 30-unit apartment building at 5571 Ladner Trunk Rd.,

GOODS from page 1 “While it is not practical for rail companies to notify the municipality of every shipment of dangerous goods, emergency response agencies need to know what kind of hazardous materials are moving through their communities and with what frequency,” Jackson said. The mayor also recommended, among other things, the formation of strategically located multi-purpose emergency response teams that can be deployed to deal with

extraordinary incidents. The Railway Association of Canada was quick to respond, noting railways regularly share information on commodities handled, including dangerous goods. Schofield said Delta’s emergency responders now know the types of materials that usually arrive and crews are being prepared for specific incidents. However, the protocol agreement doesn’t apply to materials transported by trucks, unless it’s consid-

a site currently occupied by a couple of former restaurants. The proposal does not comply with the current OCP land use designation with respect to height, density or form. If the proposal were approved, it would almost double the number of units currently allowed per acre at that site. The applicant has made ered high-hazard, which results in notification. At the time of the Quebec accident, Jackson said dangerous chemicals carried by trucks on the road are also a threat. Deltaport operator TSI will notify Delta if, for example, highly radioactive products are arriving, but the municipality doesn’t keep track of most commodities on the road, Schofield noted. A recent report to Delta council on proposed revisions to the provincial spill response system noted hazardous materials are

a number of revisions since the plan was first put forward a couple of years ago. The majority of responses received from surrounding residents when public consultation took pace at the time included concerns about traffic impacts, parking, loss of sunlight and privacy, and compatibility with neighbouring properties. A staff report notes a

residential designation for the property, as opposed to a mixed-use designation, is more consistent with the objectives of the OCP, which are to concentrate commercial development in the Ladner Village core and the adjacent commercial mall areas. A public hearing on the application will take place July 29 at municipal hall.

“While it is not practical for rail companies to notify the municipality of every shipment of dangerous goods, emergency response agencies need to know what kind of hazardous materials are moving through their communities and with what frequency.” Mayor Lois Jackson

already transported within Delta’s boundaries via road and rail. The report, which had a glowing view of Delta’s Hazardous Material Team, noted, “With the growth of goods movement by truck

and by rail through the community it is probable that transportation of hazardous materials will also increase thereby increasing the chances of an incident occurring in the community.”

“Gramma” will be back on the track this weekend as the Race for the House event in support of Ronald McDonald House B.C. takes place at Mission Raceway Park. Ladner senior Gayle Baird, who is known in racing circles as “Gramma,” will be on the track nine times with three practice rounds, three qualifying rounds and three races. She will be racing two cars this weekend: her #118 open wheel Formula Vee and the #62 Sedan class Honda Civic. Baird started racing when she retired at 62, although none of her friends and family believed she would actually stick with it. She’s now been racing for six years. “Have a good time while you can because it’ll be over before you know it.” Baird says. “I had a heart

The most aggravating part of the whole thing is I missed two racing weekends.” When asked why she got into racing, Baird says, “I can’t knit, that’s what grammas do.” She says she’s won some trophies and had a lot of fun. Baird, who refers to herself as an old Ladner girl, will attend her 50th high school reunion at the end of July at the Harris Barn.

In addition to the races, Race for the House will include a display of vintage vehicles, a chance to meet the drivers and experience two laps in a high performance car, 50/50 draws and other family-oriented activities. B.C. Agriculture Minister Norm Letnick visited Delta on Sunday and Monday, taking the opportunity to tour the area and speak to some of the farmers and stakeholders in the agricultural industry. The MLA for KelownaLake Country is spending parts of July and August touring the province. “My first stop really is Delta because it’s one of the cradles of agriculture here in British Columbia,” said Letnick. “It’s important for me to understand what’s happening here.” The invitation to come to Delta came from fellow Liberal Scott Hamilton, the MLA for Delta North who accompanied Letnick on his visit. Discussions were held concerning the challenges envy me

with organic farming, diversifying operations and problems getting proper irrigation due to salinated water moving up the Fraser River. According to Hamilton, the minister wants to make sure the water that was promised through the South Fraser Perimeter Road project will be delivered. “Salinity in the water is the last thing you need when it comes to irrigation in agriculture,” he said. “Part of the South Fraser Perimeter Road project, one of the agreements in place was to upgrade the irrigation facilities for the local farmers. A lot of money and time has been spent, but it’s not as quite finely tuned as it should be yet.” Local farmer Daryl Goodwin, who owns Enviro-smart Organics Ltd. and West Coast Instant Lawns, provided a 20envy me

minute helicopter tour so the minister could see the diverse farming practices taking place in Delta. Goodwin also showed the minister around his East Ladner facility, which turns organic waste into topsoil. Letnick said the goal of his ministry is for agriculture to reach $14 billion in sales by 2017, up from just shy of $12 billion currently. The minister recently returned from China where he struck a trade deal for B.C. cherries. He’s hoping it will open up the market for blueberries as well. “We have to make sure to continue to push those export markets to accept all that capacity,” he said. “The last thing I want to hear from farmers is, ‘Norm, we’ve got all the stuff in the bin and what are we going to do with it?’ I want to make sure it’s the other way around.” envy me

TED MURPHY

MURPHY’S LAW It seemed ludicrous at first, but with every passing day the notion gains a little more credibility. When teachers and the provincial government failed to reach an agreement by the end of June, which had been a stated goal for both sides, rumblings soon began that the dispute could drag into the next school year. I didn’t give the thought much credence, but as we approach the middle of July, that talk grows louder. I still find it hard to believe this will happen, but now that the school year has come and gone, taking with it that deadline pressure many negotiations require in order to reach a deal, an extended work stoppage looms as a possibility. Rather than taking their foot off the pedal because it’s summertime, shouldn’t it be a case of utilizing the next two months, a time when few are impacted save for summer school and some other programs, to hammer out a settlement? I recognize there’s still bargaining activity taking place, but from the outside looking in it appears to lack the intensity needed to result in an agreement. It’s also led to the growing sentiment that the dispute could drag on. It was just last month that the teachers’ strike disrupted the lives of a great many British Columbians, to say nothing of the lost opportunities in the classroom and of the extra-curricular variety, so that unwelcome situation should be fresh in everyone’s minds. Going through that all over again come September is hard to fathom. Should that come to pass, I suspect the public won’t necessarily pick sides, but will be angry with both parties for not being able to find common ground. It might have been considered unfortunate that more than a year’s worth of negotiations couldn’t prevent job action, but that won’t cut it moving forward. There’s time available now to get a deal done so don’t squander the opportunity to do so while the education system is on hiatus and the impacts are minimal. Perhaps that’s a naïve way to look at the situation and it will take the proverbial gun being held to someone’s head to see a resolution. If that’s the case, then consider the clock already ticking. It’s just over seven weeks until classes are scheduled to begin for a new school year, and while that might seem like a long way off, it will be here soon enough. And when it does arrive, the public expects classrooms will be open for business as usual. After all, there’s plenty of time to ensure that happens.

Heritage home could serve as agricultural interpetive centre MIKE SCHNEIDER

COMMUNITY COMMENT Thousands drive by it every day and over the years we have watched it proudly stand as vanguard at one of the busiest highway interchanges in southern British Columbia. As noted in this paper last week, and in a couple of stories over the past couple of years, the once majestic Kittson house is dangerously close to becoming a pile of rubble. Built in 1907, this fine heritage farmhouse was home to a pioneering farm family in the early 1900s. The family grew hay, raised livestock and ran a small dairy operation. When you drive by it today, it is truly a study in contrast when you consider the innovations in farming techniques that have evolved over the years. Sunny Bay Greenhouses, the new owners of the land, operate a successful and sustainable

greenhouse operation on the same homestead land. The large yellow house framed on a background of glass from Sunny Bay’s operations instantly gives cause to reflect on the importance of farming in Delta, whether from field or greenhouse. Greenhouse production in B.C. accounts for 23 per cent of Canada’s greenhouse sales. Some $240 million is generated from greenhouse grown vegetables in B.C., which is $40 million more than is grown from field crops. Greenhouses in Delta occupy about 400 acres or about two per cent of our ALR lands (Ministry of Agriculture). These highly efficient operations are expensive to build but produce more revenue and food per square foot than any other farming technique. In Delta, these agricultural paradoxes and contrasts are all around us. When you drive through South Delta in particular you can see heritage buildings sitting beside greenhouses and modern outbuildings all over the place. It is important that we understand our farming heritage in Delta and elsewhere and it is equally important that youngsters and future generations comprehend what farming is so that a better appreciation of food and the food

economy can be realized. The Corporation of Delta’s Heritage Advisory Committee has been looking at ways to save the Kittson house from becoming a pile of scrap. It has been diligent in attempting to save this important piece of our local history. The owners of Sunny Bay have thankfully been very patient while a new home for the building is found. They can’t wait for much longer though as they need to use the Kittson footprint for their business. I think this fine piece of architecture would make a suitable interpretive centre for the greenhouse association and for farming in general. It could also be used as an educational facility. I am hoping the community can rally around the Kittson house and offer its support of the Heritage Advisory Committee to come up with ideas and the money needed to save the building. Perhaps a combination of community, corporate and government support can work together right away to save this home and keep it is a reminder of our past so that we can prepare for the future. A Google search for Kittson house will give you plenty of links to photos and other information.

Towers proposed for Point also pose health concerns

Editor: Perhaps others are as worried as myself about the proposed radio transmitter in Point Roberts. After hearing MP KerryLynne Findlay’s comments regarding the blanketing effects from the KRPI border blaster, I must express my concerns to emphasize it is more serious than just the blanketing interference

scientist to understand that bad effects will happen to human beings subjected to this continuous irradiation. Please, Findlay, I ask you again and your Conservative government to consult with the U.S. and its Federal Communications Commission to eliminate this threat to Canadians’ health. John Gibbs

to our electronic devices and reduced property values. It is the health of 20,000 people who will be irradiated 24/7 for years and years by 50,000 watts of electromagnetic energy from a directional antenna aimed at South Delta only 300 metres distant. This is not acceptable to any reasonable person and it doesn’t take a rocket

Findlay’s suggestion to focus efforts at the county level is a better use of time Editor: Re: MP answers on radio towers queries make no sense, Community Comment, July 4 Perhaps Steve Graham’s column says more about him than about MP KerryLynne Findlay. I was not at the presentation but have since read

Tsawwassen into consideration and is not going to revoke its approval. Findlay’s suggestion that Tsawwassenites represent themselves and their concerns at the Whatcom County hearing seems to be a much more effective use of everyone’s time. Curtis R. MacDonald

it and it makes perfect sense to me. Can Graham explain to me the effectiveness of Findlay or any other member of our government writing to the Federal Communications Commissions in the U.S. requesting it review and revoke its approval when it has already said it took

Don’t make mistake of re-electing disingenuous MP Editor: Re: MP answers on radio towers queries make no sense, Community Comment, July 4 I, too, attended the June 23 meeting of Delta council

where Delta-Richmond East MP Kerry-Lynne Findlay attempted to explain her position regarding the KRPI radio towers application for Point Roberts. It is clear that Findlay’s

behaviour in this whole sorry affair is at best disingenuous. Let’s hope we don’t make the mistake of re-electing her in 2015. Jerry Cutler

Issues impacting classroom composition have been readily apparent to teachers for decades Editor: I have been reading, as most of us have, about the latest teachers’ strike. Salaries, class sizes and class composition seem to be recurring issues from strike to strike. Teacher salaries may not be the highest but they are certainly not the lowest. There will always be arguments on

what is the right class size. The “mainstreaming” of special needs students has been happening for over 25 years. Canada’s immigration boom, which has brought non-English speaking students into the classrooms, has been happening for far longer. What did all of these striking teachers think the

job “teacher” entailed when they were enrolling to begin their “education” five, 10 or 20 years ago? Maybe if they had researched their chosen profession more closely, they would have seen that over the years the issues have been the same. Not much has changed from one strike to the next. L. Laferte

Introducing the

Proposal not a fit for Ladner Editor: For 24 years I have lived in the “west end” of Ladner — just off 47A Avenue. A numbered company hopes to make this area into a mini-West End of Vancouver! According to the Ladner Area Plan, there is a height restriction in this area of three storeys. The developer is asking Delta council to amend the plan in order to build a fivestorey complex on 47A Avenue. If the developer is successful in the attempt to persuade council to allow this change, all of Ladner is in jeopardy by setting a precedent. What will come next? Tear down La Belle Auberge and build a six-storey complex? Where will it end? If you are as concerned as I am about the future of Ladner, please attend the public information meeting on Wednesday, July 16 at 7 p.m. at the Ladner Community Centre. Fran Cameron

Dog is turn off for landlords

Editor: I have been trying to rent a basement suite or one-bedroom apartment. Everything is fine until I mention that I have a small dog. At that point, I’m treated as though I have leprosy. I have known my pug for years. He doesn’t drink, smoke, do drugs or engage in violence. In fact, if it wasn’t for being a couch potato, he’d be a perfect male. Would someone please explain why he’s such an unsuitable tenant? Kelly Calder

Bright colours are better than noise to let drivers know motorcycle near

Editor: Re: Valid reason for loud motorcycle exhausts, letter to the editor, July 4 Motorcyclist Scott Greene is confused: loud motorcycle exhausts have existed since motorcycles were invented, which was long before Prius cars, invehicle entertainment systems, cell phones and other modern distractions were invented. However, he is quite cor-

rect that drivers are often “blind” to motorcycles but he fails to follow this time-worn observation to its logical end: drivers are often blind to motor bikes because they are much smaller than other vehicles, and because motorcyclists too often camouflage themselves in dark outfits, thereby making themselves and their ‘cycles doubly hard to notice. Besides, loud noise com-

Liberal MLA should stick to North Delta Editor: What is it with Scott Hamilton, MLA for Delta North? Does he not like his own riding? Are there no issues in North Delta that he should be attending to? Does he wish he were the representative for Delta South instead? If I were a resident of North Delta, I would be getting a little tired of

Hamilton doing stuff and posing for photos in the South Delta media while there appears to be very little he’s done for his own riding, North Delta. I don’t get it. Is the purpose to establish a “Liberal brand” in South Delta? Last I looked, the next election is still awhile off. Is it simply to annoy the

Reaching the finals Talk about a sports extravaganza — the World Cup, Wimbledon, Tour de France and our own Tour de Delta. Reaching the finals in a major sporting event is a big deal. It is the culmination of not only a qualifying process but years of focus, dedication and hard work. There is another event we are all entered in and heading for the finals - life. How we do has eternal consequences. It is the ultimate test and we all want to do well in those finals. St. Paul often used sports references to illustrate important life principles. In a letter he wrote at the end of his life, he said this about making the finals: “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, and I have remained faithful. And now the prize awaits me - the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous

Judge, will give me on the day of his return.” (2 Timothy 4:7-8 NLT) Who wouldn’t want to head into the finals with that kind of confidence? Although he worked hard and stayed faithful, Paul knew that we don’t win because of what we do, but because of what Jesus did. In another letter to Timothy, Paul wrote: “Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners” - and I am the worst of them all. But God had mercy on me so that Christ Jesus could use me as a prime example of his great patience with even the worst sinners. Then others will realize that they, too, can believe in him and receive eternal life. (1 Timothy 1:15-16, NLT) This is a finals we all can win. Reach Mike Mawhorter at mike@ ladnerbaptist.ca.

Ladner author’s new romantic comedy tells story of longtime teacher BY

DAVE WILLIS

dwillis@delta-optimist.com

L

adner author Laura Michelle Thomas’ latest book started out as one thing and ended up being something totally different. She originally began working on a non-fiction version of a spontaneous storytelling workshop for teachers that she estimates she’s done over 50 times for approximately 2,500 people. That idea morphed into what is now The Naked Storyteller, a novel that’s due for release this month. “It’s just a straight up romantic comedy now,” she explains. Harry Tyke, a 52-year-old Grade 6 teacher, is the protagonist of the story, which opens on a professional day on Valentine’s Day at a fictional high school in Vancouver. Tyke attends a workshop and meets Olga, a “creative, free-thinking teacherturned-storyteller.” The story covers about a year of Tyke’s life and what happens after he takes Olga’s storytelling workshop. “He goes through a rather big transformation,” says Thomas, adding that attending the workshop “shakes a lot loose for him.”

Author Laura Michelle Thomas will be having a launch party for her new romantic comedy, The Naked Storyteller, in September.

Tyke, who is divorced and had been shut down emotionally for a number of years, is an outsider who didn’t want to be a teacher in the first place. He wanted to be a writer and novelist but was forced into the teaching profession for job security and a pension by

way of a family decision, Thomas explains. “One of the themes tackled in the book is kids letting their parents tell them what they should do with their lives,” she says. Readers will be rooting for Tyke, she says. “They’ll wonder why

they are at first, but they will.” She started writing Harry’s story in early 2013 and the book also includes a bit of life imitating art as a teachers’ strike takes place during the course of the novel. The cover for The Naked

Storyteller is an original piece of art by Ken Rolston, who did a beautiful job, says Thomas. She describes the cover as an interesting compilation of some key scenes from the novel. “Everything in the cover matters, from the red shoes,

to the bare legs, to the darkened room to the candle. If people look at the actual lettering of the title, there’s a little sledgehammer that makes the T. It all matters. It all matters to the theme and it all matters to the story.” She previously wrote Polly Wants to Be a Writer: The Junior Authors Guide to Writing Published, a young adult fantasy novel/ writing guide hybrid. Thomas says she’s been asked how she went from writing Polly to a romantic comedy for adults. She says she doesn’t want to be stuck writing for one niche market. “I want to show off my range,” she says. “That matters. I do not want to be pigeonholed as one kind of writer.” Thomas says she’s very proud of The Naked Storyteller. There will be a launch party for Thomas’ new novel on Sept. 21 from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Chapters store in Metrotown. “That’s really exciting,” she says. RSVP for the launch party by emailing Thomas at laura@laurathomascommunications.com. For more on Thomas, visit her website at laurathomascommunications. com.

Latest book in children’s series set for launch Tsawwassen children’s author Darlene Foster will be launching Amanda in Alberta - The Writing on the Stone, her fourth book in the popular children’s travel-adventure series, later this month. International traveller, 12-year-old Amanda Ross stays at home where she is delighted to show her friend Leah around Alberta during her visit from England. They take in the Calgary Stampede, go on a cattle drive, visit Head-SmashedIn Buffalo Jump, spend

time with the dinosaurs at the Royal Tyrrell Museum and explore the crazy hoodoos. When Amanda finds a stone with a unique mark on it, she doesn’t think it’s important until everyone seems to want it, including a very ornery cowboy. Is this stone worth ruining Leah’s holiday and placing them both in danger? The launch of Amanda in Alberta - The Writing on the Stone will be held at Albany Books in Tsawwassen on Saturday, July 26 from 1 to

3 p.m. The author will be reading from the novel and signing copies of all of her books. The Amanda travel adventure books are published by Central Avenue Publishing, a local publishing house. SUBMITTED PHOTO

Images linger from Down Under Luxury coach takes visitors on seven-day holiday around Murray River basin BY

“Wow! Look at this! It’s perfect!” My sister jabs at an advertisement in Australia’s The Senior newspaper. The advert by Magic Murray Holidays sounds ideal: a seven-day trip by luxury coach around the Murray River basin in New South Wales and Victoria. Four-star accommodation, most meals and an expert tour guide – all for just $500. It’s a deal! Along with a group of Australians, most of them over 65, we are picked up from Albury station to set off on a two-hour drive through western New South Wales. This is how I’ve always imagined the Australian countryside – sheep and cattle stations encompassing thousands of acres and stretching to the horizon. Ensconced in the airconditioned comfort of our coach, we drive through small settlements, most of them seemingly deserted – shops closed, houses with window shades drawn and not a soul on the streets. It’s probably because the mercury is at 42C this afternoon. Worse still, the scorching wind has whipped up forest fires through the neighbour-

Guests melt into smiles within minutes of meeting Kristy-Lee, a buxom blonde with an infectious laugh and an irreverent Aussie sense of humour. She pampers her guests,

manages the motel and oversees our meals. Her husband Clint who sports a little goatee beard and an insouciant air, is less outgoing than his wife, but is an engaging and informative tour guide. Our first day is spent exploring nearby towns and the surrounding countryside. The twin towns of Barham and Koondrook are

To my delight, we board a “talking tram” that recounts the Bendigo’s history as it clangs and clatters through the town, passing old houses with filigree ironwork railings and trimming on eaves that look as delicate as crocheted lace. Our last day is spent close to home. We are captivated by friendly piglets on a nearby farm, and sample sweet, freshly squeezed grapefruit juice at a citrus processing factory in Barham. A bonus on this trip are our Australian companions, some of whom are well into their 80s. They are a funloving lot – lively, curious and ready for each day’s outing. At the closing of our farewell banquet, they chant: “Aussie! Aussie! Aussie!” and we two Canadians join in the response of “Oi! Oi! Oi!” Travel Writers’ Tales is an independent travel article syndicate that offers professionally written travel articles to newspaper editors and publishers. We cross the 109-yearold span lift bridge linking the two towns, and stroll along a shady walkway fringing the banks of the river, stopping to admire a series of red gum wood sculptures chain-saw carved by world renowned carver Kevin Guilders.

The week goes by quickly, but the images linger on: waking up to the sound of a hysterical kookaburra in the grove behind our motel; driving through avenues of eucalyptus trees, some with white barks, ghostly and stark, others lush and graceful, their high branches stroking the sky. Citrus orchards line part of our route, their fruit like pretty Christmas tree decorations. We pause for mid-morning teas in parks with picnic tables set out under dignified oaks, and stroll along pathways where willow trees tremble over river banks. Our itinerary includes little known attractions. The guys in our group are enthralled by a display of vintage cars in the Holden car museum in Echuca and Second World War buffs are captivated by the full-sized Lake Catalina Flying Boat and memorabilia on display at the Boga Lake Base museum. A riverboat in Echuca’s historic old port takes us up the Murray River as it twists its way between high banks and thickets of gum trees. Welcome Wagon

Avoid cereal in the a.m. p.j. wren

Well on Your Way While on this journey to better health and fitness (because this is a journey and not a destination), there are some things that can help your journey and some things that will sidetrack it. Today I am going reveal one of the biggest impersonators in the weight loss world. This one food pretends to be healthy, fortified and full of nutrients. It has also been known to toot its own horn because it is a “delicious, wholesome beginning that fills bellies and fuels bodies and minds.” However, once the fanfare has stopped and you delve a little deeper, you will soon see this breakfast favourite will instead: stall weight loss, increase our appetite for more food (and the wrong kind), raise our blood sugar levels and leave

us feeling tired, sluggish and brain-dead by midmorning. What’s the culprit? It’s cereal. Yep, that innocent box of cereal in your cupboard, impersonating as a healthy start to your day, is about as innocent as Kim Kardashian is at being camera-shy. While I understand the draw to cereal – let’s face it, is an easy-to-prepare breakfast option – it’s high carbohydrate and sugar content makes it an unhealthy (and fattening) way to start your day. First, the process of how cereal is made is unhealthy for the body, no matter what organic, expensive, fromthe-health-food-store brand you buy. All cold breakfast cereals are made by a process called extrusion. In the first part of the extrusion process the grains are mixed with water in a slurry and then processed in a machine called an “extruder.” Once the grains and water have fought with the

extruder, the grains/sludge are then pumped out of tiny holes using high temperatures and pressure. These holes are what create those cute little O’s, flakes and other shapes that we find in our cereal box. Certain grains from the above process will then be passed through the extruder again to produce puffed wheat, oats and rice. Afterwards, all of these little O’s and flakes are then sprayed with a coating of oil and sugar to seal the deal. This sealing is crucial to a cereal’s success, because it must stay crunchy while floating in a bowl of milk. Unfortunately, they don’t stop there. The high heat and pressure used during the processing pretty much destroys most of the grains’ nutrients, and since you have to sell mom and the rest of us this particular box is breakfast gold, the manufacturers take the cereal through one more process by adding back the vitamins and minerals synthetically

their processing stripped from the grains. Most of us know cereals like Lucky Charms and Frosted Flakes have a ton of sugar in them, but even the “healthiest” cereals have an unnecessary amount of sugar. Some examples: Kashi GoLean (one cup) 9 grams (just over 2 tsp.), Kashi GoLean - Crunch (3/4 C) 13 grams (3 tsp), Barbara’s Original Puffins (3/4 C) 5 grams (just over 1 tsp), Bob’s Red Mill Granola (1/4 C) 8 grams (2 tsp). Instead, opt for oatmeal if you really want cereal for breakfast (and not the pre-packaged kind either), as well as Greek yogurt with fresh fruit, whole grain bread with almond butter, scrambled eggs with salsa and avocado, fresh-pressed veggie juices, and I even eat cold salmon with a side of mixed nuts on occasion too. Using patented (MP)² technology, Venus Freeze utilizes multipolar radio frequency and Pulsed Magnetic fields which produce a soothing and therapeutic heat matrix over the skin. Skin tightening, wrinkle reduction and cellulite reduction occur because

After 7 treatments

the multi-polar radio frequency causes a thermal reaction in the tissue which stimulates the body’s natural healing response. This restoring response causes new collagen to form and the production of new elastin fibres. The active collage in the skin contracts, achieving tighter skin, softening of wrinkles and reduced cellulite. Venus Freeze treatments are noninvasive and painless, with many patients comparing the treatment to a hot-stone massage!

Treatments take approximately 30-40mins depending on the area, you can expect to see results as the treatments progress, a minimum of 6 treatments for the face, 8 on the neck and 10 on the body. Almost $3,000 was raised at Party for Play 2.0 at Sharkey’s Seafood Bar and Grille in Ladner.

Women’s soccer teams unite in annual fundraiser for KidSport

The Ladner United and Wildebeests women’s soccer teams co-hosted the second annual Party for Play 2.0 at Sharkey’s Seafood Bar and Grille in Ladner last month. The event raised $2,826 for the Delta chapter of KidSport Canada. KidSport’s mission is to

ensure no kid is left on the sidelines and all kids should be given the opportunity to experience the positive benefits of organized sports. Money was raised through ticket sales and silent auction. This year’s event was completely sold out.

The two teams would like to thank Sharkey’s and the wonderful staff, the Camille Garvey quintet, DJ Larry, as well as local businesses and individuals that supported the event. The teams look forward to hosting Party For Play 3.0 next spring.

At Imperial Stables, the horses well being and their health is a priority. We strive to meet every horse’s individual needs for both turnout and nutrition. We have a 32 stall barn with in and out paddocks and offer 12 or 24 hour turnout options, as well as seasonal field turnout. We have a variety of types of feed available and offer a customized feed plan for every horse. Our knowledgeable staff work very hard to ensure the horses are well looked after and happy in this open concept environment that allows the horses to feel less isolated and more like part of a group. Imperial Stables offers full board, as well as training programs for hunter, jumper and equitation horses with our trainer Justine Annandale. She provides a training program for those riders looking to compete at top level horse shows, and everything in between. We also have a wonderful dressage trainer, Shelley Lawder. We have recently received our COR certification from Worksafe BC. We are the

On the southeast corner of 60th Avenue and 64th Street in Delta, is the picturesque location of Imperial Stables. The Gadban’s bought the facility in the spring of 2009 to fulfill a life long desire to live on a farm. They had a vision to create a friendly atmosphere within a superb training facility while keeping the very horse-accommodating layout to the property. And so Imperial Stables was established and is now emerging in this wonderful community as a leading hunter, jumper and equitation facility; with an emphasis on high standards of horse care.

U18 Blues exit as champions

Tsawwassen boys soccer team captures Provincial “B” Cup while U16 Ladner Celtic earns bronze It was quite the send off season for the Tsawwassen Blues. The U18 boys soccer team capped its final campaign at the youth level by capturing the the Les Sinnott Memorial Provincial “B” Cup last weekend in Richmond with a 2-1 victory over the Kamloops Blaze in the championship game. The Blues, coached by longtime Tsawwassen Soccer Club executive Rick Connors, featured many of the top 1996-born players in South Delta — with nearly a 50/50 split of Tsawwassen and Ladner talent. Some had come back to play at the club level after extended stints in the Metro Selects or the B.C. Premier League. It added up to the Blues becoming the first local boys team in recent memory to win a B.C. title. Tsawwassen earned its spot in the eight team tournament after reaching the Coastal Cup final in April where it dropped a tough 2-1 decision to league rival Central City Breakers (CCB) Elite. The road to the gold medal game was hardly an easy one as the Blues opened with hard-fought wins over the Terrace Kermodes (3-2) and Prince George Timberwolves (2-1). That set the stage for Saturday’s final preliminary game against Island champion Saanich Fusion with the locals needing only a draw to advance. In German-like fashion, the Blues blitzed the Fusion for four goals in the opening 25 minutes and cruised to a 4-0 victory. Kamloops also provided a stern test, having dumped CCB Elite 2-0 en route to winning its group. The Blues’ impressive campaign included a 1-0 victory over the Elite in the League Cup final. The team featured: goalkeeper Garrett Brown, Shaun Coburn, Alex von Schulmann, Scott Bailey, Logan McCormack, Shusei Ijichi, Luke Harms, Adam Bosch, Brendan Waterman, Matt Kirk, Adam LaRiviere, Kris Jantsch, Cam Dhaliwal, Mark Takahashi, Seiji Takahashi, Leland Butner, Blair Wilson, Mackenzie Connors and

Tsawwassen Blues Luke Harms battles for posession during his team’s 4-0 win over Saanich at the Les Sinnott Memorial Provincial “B” Cup Boys Soccer Championships. The U18 squad went on to win the gold medal. Bryce Connors. Bill Ross rounded out the coaching staff. Stu Bosch was team manager. Meanwhile, the U16 Ladner Celtic concluded its memorable season by becoming just the second team in the history of the Ladner Boys Soccer Club to reach the provincial podium. The Celtic earned bronze with a 3-2 win over Westminster United, in what proved to be a rematch of April’s Coastal Cup final, also won by Ladner (2-0). Celtic opened the tournament with a 3-0 win over Terrace, setting the stage for a pivotal game against Kelowna United. Ladner fell behind on a first half goal before pulling even on a penalty. The Okanagan

champions jumped back in front on a corner kick and held back a late Ladner charge for a 2-1 victory en route to winning the gold medal. Celtic bounced back on Saturday with an 8-1 win over the Richmond Athletics, clinching a spot in Sunday’s third place game. Ladner surrendered an early goal before responding with three of its own. At the Provincial “B” Cup girls’ championship in Chilliwack, the U16 Tsawwassen Blues took seventh place after a dominating 6-0 win over 100 Mile House. However, the locals were agonizingly close to being in the gold medal game. The Blues opened the tournament with a big 3-1 victory over rival and Coastal Cup champion Chilliwack Attack, avenging a semi-final over-

time loss in Coastal playdowns. All they needed was to win either of their final two games to secure top place. Instead, the girls dropped one goal decisions to Kelowna (2-1) and Terrace (1-0), leaving them in fourth spot. At the Provincial “A” Cup Championships in Burnaby, Ladner and Tsawwassen talented helped four Delta Coastal Select girls teams reach the podium. The U18, U16, U15 and U13 squads advanced to the final, falling to Upper Vancouver (2-1), Kamloops (1-0), Surrey FC Pegasus (1-0) and North Shore Renegades (3-0) respectively to earn silver medals. On the boys side, U14 Coastal captured bronze with a 1-0 win over Richmond United.
