At just over a year old, little Sophia Fallow has already spent almost half her life in hospital. “She always rebounds so fast,” says mom Mary-Ann Fallow, 23. “She’s just an amazing baby. She doesn’t even cry all that much.” Sophia was born with multiple heart defects and has already undergone three open-heart surgeries as well as other hospitalizations for complications from surgery, a blood infection and something a simple as a common cold.

“No words can express the horrors we have lived through this past year,” Fallow says. After a seemingly normal pregnancy, she gave birth at Peace Arch Hospital. However, soon after Sophia was born doctors noticed she was having trouble breathing and her glucose levels were low. She was immediately taken to B.C. Sophia was in the neo-natal intensive care unit for five days before doctors performed the first

surgery on her heart. She had another surgery in September and is just recovering from her third surgery in May. Fallow, who was born and raised in Ladner, says she was recently told Sophia, who currently requires oxygen 24 hours a day, will most likely need more surgeries. There’s another area of her heart that looks abnormal and doctors are not sure how it will develop as Sophia grows. To add to an already difficult situation, Fallow became a single parent when her boyfriend, Kevin Duff, died suddenly on May 1. “Without him, he was pretty

much our support,” she says. “It’s just me now.” Fallow has been on maternity leave but is unable to return to work as Sophia requires aroundthe-clock care. The expenses — medication, specialized equipment, formula — are mounting and while some items are covered, many others are not. Despite it all, Sophia happily enjoys an afternoon bottle in the shade on her grandparents’ front lawn. Fallow has started an online fundraiser at www.fundrazr.com/ campaigns/2kM45 to help cover the costs of caring for Sophia.
