A public hearing has been set for the highly contentious proposal to erect five radio transmission towers in Point Roberts. The hearing, which will take place at the Whatcom County courthouse on Oct. 27, 29, 30, 31 and Nov. 3, is expected to draw a large crowd from both sides of the border. BBC Broadcasting Inc. wants to construct five 45-metre (150-foot) steel towers at an undeveloped lot on McKenzie Way, about 330 metres from the Tsawwassen border. The towers are to transmit South Asian radio station KRPI, AM 1550 to a Lower Mainland audience. Many residents on both sides of the border have been fighting the plan, primarily over concerns about the impacts blanketing interference from the radio waves will have on household electronic devices. Also known as SherE-Punjab, the company currently broadcasts using antenna in Ferndale, Wash., but wants to move them closer and have a 50,000watt all-day signal. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) granted a construction permit but

Gurdial Singh (Dale) Badh, chief operating officer of Sher-E-Punjab Radio Broadcasting Inc., was upset in 2011 when Delta wouldn’t allow him to truck fill to his East Delta farm or build a large home on the property. a conditional use permit is still required from Whatcom County. Although KRPI transmits from Ferndale, Sher-EPunjab broadcasts from studios in Richmond. Sher-E-Punjab, a Canadian company, rents the current tower array from BBC Broadcasting Inc., which is registered in the state of Washington. The company that owns the land on which the current towers sit is called BBC Holdings. Opponents argue BBC Broadcasting is nothing more than “a shell com-
pany” and that corporate decision-making lies with the family that owns SherE-Punjab. Sher-E-Punjab, coincidently, is one of several applicants vying for several local AM and FM frequencies available on this side of the border, with AM 600 being the most desired. The Canadian Radio Television Commission (CRTC) held a hearing in Surrey earlier this year, hearing from Sher-EPunjab’s chief operating officer, Gurdial Singh (Dale) Badh, whose father,
Ajit Singh Badh, founded Sher-E-Punjab. The company wants the local AM 600 signal, saying it needs a “repatriation” to a Canadian frequency because the current signal can’t be heard in the evenings, a prime listening time for its audience. Gurdial Badh told the CRTC panel his talk radio station has been able to provide high quality programming to the South Asian community despite the poor signal. When the CRTC panel wanted to sort through the
complicated web of ownership, asking for details about the relationship between BBC Broadcasting and BBC Holdings, Badh noted he’s a 20 per cent “minority owner” of BBC Broadcasting and Bhag S. Kehla owns 80 per cent. Kehla owns 20 per cent of BBC Holdings, while Gurdial’s brother, Suki, owns 80 per cent. Opponents argue the arrangement to have Kehla, an American, registered as the majority shareholder of BBC Broadcasting was made because the Canadians wouldn’t have been eligible for the current FCC licence, let alone the application to relocate the towers to Point Roberts. Responding to the FCC, which received an informal objection to deny the company’s license renewal, the applicant referred to the opponents as NIMBYs who seek to derail the proposal at all costs. The CRTC panel sought an assurance from Badh that, should the Canadian AM signal be granted, another broadcaster would not be given a lease of the U.S transmitter to target Canadian audiences, either from Ferndale or Point Roberts. The Point Roberts property is registered under his and his wife’s name.
Coalition’s petition has reached 1,200 signatures BY

A petition against the proposed Point Roberts radio towers has already surpassed the 1,200-signature mark. To be submitted to the House of Commons, the petition requests federal government intervention
into the BBC Broadcasting Inc. application to erect five radio towers in the American peninsula. The petition has been garnering a positive response, according to members of the Cross Border Coalition to Stop the Radio Towers who have been organizing it. The Federal
Communications Commission in the U.S. has already approved the towers, although approval is still required by Whatcom County. Tsawwassen Business Improvement Association president Randy Scott said the organization has been asked to support the petition by having it available
at local businesses. At least 25 shops, including his own Randy’s Tirecraft, have agreed to do so with many more expected to join in the coming days. Coalition members have also set up a table weekly at the Tsawwassen Town Centre Mall where people can get more information, sign the petition or make

a donation to the legal fund. The table is staffed Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., although not over the long weekend. Coalition members are scheduled to meet with federal Industry Minister James Moore next week. For more information about the fight, check notowers.webs.com.

Jade is a lovely girl who was surrendered to the shelter because she was a little unpredictable with the 3 year old child in the home. Do to these circumstances we feel that Jade would do best in a household with children over 10 years old. She has lived with a male cat in the past, so she may be a good candidate for a multi-cat household! We hope you will take the time to get to know her, she really is a lovely cat!! Highway 17 is undergoing a widening project that will see eastbound lane closures until late August. Taking place on a stretch between 56th Street and Tsawwassen Drive, the highway work is being undertaken by the Tsawwassen First Nation to support development on its lands, according to the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure. As part of the develop-
ment of a pair of mega malls, the developers have been required to undertake roadway capacity and safety improvements to accommodate a projected increase in traffic volumes. To be completed by the fall of 2015, the ministry says the improvements involve various projects, such as intersection upgrades at several locations, including 56th and 52nd streets. the TFN a couple of years ago noted it’s anticipated the shopping centres will generate an additional 1,000 vehicles per hour in the a.m. peak period, with 3,800 vehicles during the p.m. peak hour. An expected 6,500 vehicles will come during the Saturday peak period around noon. By full TFN build-out in 2031, it’s expected the traffic generated will be 3,600 vehicles in the a.m. peak hour, 7,100 vehicles during the p.m. peak, and 9,000 during the Saturday peak.

Ladner’s Stacey Lynden has earned a spot at the upcoming Canadian National Barista Competition in Ontario. She qualified for nationals by finishing fourth at a regional competition in Vancouver last Saturday at Rocanini Coffee Roasters. “It was a lot to take in. It was awesome,” said Lynden, 32, who works fulltime at Stir Coffee House in Ladner. “I’ve been working in the coffee industry for almost 14 years now, but I’ve never competed.” At the regional competition Lynden had to make 12 drinks in a 15-minute time limit, as well as give a presentation during the process. She served four espressos, four cappuccinos and four signature drinks to a panel of judges. Lynden said she’s excited to qualify for the national competition. “It’s pretty awesome. To be there with the top 16 is pretty crazy.” The Canadian championships are scheduled to be held in late September in Mississauga.

Police called after dog passes out in vehicle The purpose of the Crime Beat is to educate and inform the public about some of the property crime trends occurring in South Delta and other files of interest. If you see anything occurring that you believe to be suspicious, call 911 for in-progress crimes and emergencies or 604-9464411 for other assistance. The following are some of the calls the Delta police responded to in the previous week: Tsawwassen • July 22, 7:33 p.m., 1A Avenue and 66th Street: Report received there was a suspicious male in the area all afternoon. Police attended and located the male who claimed he and five other people were canvassing for a charity. The suspect could only provide police with work ID. Police established that the canvassing was legitimate and advised the canvasser to carry picture ID and have his work ID on a lanyard. • July 26, 12:30 p.m., Roberts Bank Road: Complainant reported he had lost his black iPhone 5 sometime during the morning at the port dock. Report taken for insurance purposes and information was added to the police database. • July 26, 11:52 p.m., 1500-block of 56th Street: Police observed a vehicle with no lights driving through parking lots parallel to the roadway. Police pulled the vehicle over and suspected the driver had consumed alcohol. A roadside test resulted in a “Warn” reading. The 23year-old male driver was issued a three-day roadside prohibition. • July 27, 12:14 a.m., 5300-block of 10A Avenue: Police observed a vehicle fail to stop for a stop sign. Police pulled vehicle over and suspected the driver
had consumed alcohol. A roadside test resulted in a “Fail” reading. The 54year-old female driver was issued 90-day roadside prohibition and 30-day vehicle impound.
Ladner • July 21, 11:45 p.m., 3900-block of Arthur Drive: Several youths were reported on the roof of the school. When police arrived the youths were seen fleeing the scene. A backpack, baton, seven “air soft” guns and balls, and several empty and half-empty bottles of liquor were located at the rear of the school and seized by police. Later the parent of the owner of the backpack contacted police. Police warned the parent of the possible consequences of his son carrying a realistic looking gun. Parent was cooperative with police and was advised he could pick up the backpack at police headquarters. • July 23, 5:52 p.m., 5200-block of Ladner Trunk Road: A restaurant reported three youths had purchased meals and paid with a counterfeit $100 US bill. Police attended and found another business had accepted a counterfeit bill from the youths and an attempt had been made to use a bill at another business. The manager of the restaurant was able to provide police with a photograph of the youths that he took as they were leaving the restaurant. Police investigation continues. • July 24, 1:02 p.m., 4400-block of Clarence Taylor Way: Complainant reported an unauthorized user had accessed his account and sent out emails on his behalf to his sports team. Police contacted a possible suspect but he
denied any involvement. The suspect, who was cooperative with police, was advised of the allegation and the possible charges stemming from the offence. Police will continue investigation and monitor the situation. • July 25, 9:15 p.m., Highway 17A and Ladner Trunk Road: Report received that a bicycle was stolen from the bus stop sometime during the day. The bicycle is described as a white Tern men’s folding bike. Complainant provided with the Corporation of Delta phone number to arrange for a viewing of found bikes. • July 25, 5:39 p.m., 4900-block of Chisholm Street: Police received a report that a dog had been left in a vehicle parked on the street. Complainant indicated the windows were left open a crack but after 20 minutes the dog stopped whimpering and appeared to have passed out. The vehicle was gone when police officers arrived. Follow-up conducted with registered owner of the vehicle. • July 26, 1:55 p.m., 5800-block of Grove Avenue: Complainant reported her bicycle was stolen from beside her house sometime overnight. The bike is described as an old black women’s Raleigh with 15 gears, front basket and bell on the left handle. Report taken for information and insurance purposes. • July 27, 10:34 a.m., 10000-block of Ladner Trunk Road: Report received that sometime over the past couple of days suspects had stolen a trailer from the farm field containing approximately 40 pieces of aluminum pipe and a Ford three-cylinder diesel water pump. Investigation is ongoing.

MURPHY’S LAW The notion that the Tour de Delta is a proving ground for cyclists on their way to the world stage certainly got a boost in France last weekend. Exactly three weeks after capturing the White Spot Delta Road Race in Tsawwassen, Winnipeg’s Leah Kirchmann found herself on cycling’s biggest stage in the inaugural running of La Course, a possible precursor to a female version of the Tour de France. And not only did Kirchmann take part in the historic race, but the Canadian champion almost won it all, finishing an extremely close third behind Olympic champ Marianne Vos of the Netherlands. We’ve seen cyclists come through here — Tyler Farrar, Svein Tuft and Christian Meier come to mind recently — that go on to ride in the Tour de France and other big time races in Europe, but usually it doesn’t happen quite so quickly. Arms raised in victory, Kirchmann was pictured on the front page of our July 9 issue thanks to her triumph in Tsawwassen (she also won the Brenco Criterium in Ladner Village the night before). The day the paper came out she claimed her third B.C. Superweek title at the Gastown Grand Prix. And before you know it, she’s in France competing against the world’s best. *** While on the topic of athletes destined for big things, it’s nice to see Ladner’s own James Paxton poised to return to the Seattle Mariners’ rotation. Paxton was an impressive call-up last September and was enjoying a strong spring when his season was derailed by injury. I saw a stat the other day that said he is the first pitcher in almost 50 years to toss at least six shutout innings in three of his first five career MLB games. Not bad, not bad at all. *** For at least a couple of years now we’ve been hearing how liquefied natural gas will be the saviour of the B.C. economy. For significantly longer than that we’ve been told, like it or not, Delta’s strategic location makes it a key player in the Asia-Pacific gateway. Well, it seemed like it was only a matter of time before those two issues crossed paths, which has finally happened with the application before the National Energy Board to build an LNG terminal on the Fraser River. I thought the whole bulk liquids issue would make its way out to Roberts Bank, and it might well find itself there at some point, but the fact there’s a proposal for the Tilbury area can hardly be considered surprising.
Memories come rushing back on summertime visit to Point MIKE SCHNEIDER
COMMUNITY COMMENT Even a gas run to Point Roberts is enough to stir up the summer memories of yesteryear. My old beater work truck goes through the petrol in a big way so I find myself filling up at the Point weekly. I take Luna down with me which is quite fun. I look in the rear view mirror to see her in the bed of the truck, ears flapping in the wind. I can see the anticipation in her eyes as she knows she will soon be swimming. But first, a stop at the Can Am gas station where the service is great and Luna always gets a treat from the operators. Next stop is Lighthouse Marine Park for a couple of laps and a swim. As we approach the park from the north, Luna begins to chirp, bark and eventually howl as she knows the heat of the day will be dashed shortly.
The smell of the sea air, the wild roses and baking cedar on the boardwalk brings on fond memories of many years camping with friends and family at this great facility. This was the first summer in 15 years that we didn’t set up a massive camp for the Canada Day long weekend. The kids are all growing up and have better things to do than play manhunt or cast for bullheads. Thank goodness for technology. I can revisit those wonderful days through slideshows I have created over the years. On our way home we almost always stop at the International Market Place to pick up a few items that you can only get in America: David’s salty sunflower seeds, a 12-pack of cold, clear bottles of Miller for $8.99 and usually a brick of Tillamook sharp cheddar. This time of year, though, it is always fun to see the beach accessories and I recall the kids begging for these treats these just like I did at the Selma Park store on the Sunshine Coast when I was a kid. There are wiffle balls, every type of “flying disk” imaginable, air mattresses, water guns and pistols, tacky beach towels, beach balls,

plastic bats and balls, and countless other brightly-coloured pieces of plastic. It has been my experience that each of these summer necessities are generally used a grand total of four times as they invariably crack, break or otherwise stop to function, or they are discarded due to boredom or disappointment. After coming home from our gas run this past Wednesday I found myself in the grocery store listening to three young lads who had their afternoon nailed. With skateboards and backpacks in tow, they first needed to stock up on Jolly Ranchers and Skittles. Presumably, this sugar purchase was needed to get to their next stop, which was Subway. Then, as it was planned, they would proceed to the water park to cool down. Sounded like a very good plan to me and reminded me of our summer adventures, except we had 50 cents instead of 10 bucks to buy stuff. Inflation, I guess. With the B.C. Day long weekend here already, I hope you all take the time to recall a cherished summer memory, or better yet, create a summer event that you will fondly recall down the road. Enjoy it out there!

Antique fair carries on in smaller venue this year Editor: It is customary for a letter of thanks to appear after the Sun Festival Antique Fair, but this year extraordinary events have prompted me to write a an early thank you note. The failure of the Ladner Leisure Centre wall last winter, and the subsequent additional damage to the building, caused Delta’s parks and recreation department to evict the Sun Festival Antique Fair from the South Delta Recreation Centre to accommodate a summer hockey camp, as the hockey camp could not wait one week to have the ice put back in the arena. As there was no comparable venue to hold the
show, and that annual trade shows that are cancelled for one year tend to wither away, for a time the 36th annual Sun Festival Antique Fair was going to be nothing more than a historical footnote. It was decided to run an “emergency” show at the South Delta Recreation Centre in the meeting rooms on the north side of the building to keep the show in operation. The show will be smaller in size but will have the best of dealers in attendance, with lots of antiques and collectables for sale. We will also offer an “outside pitch” for dealers who like to sell in the fresh air. The entrance fee is $4 on

Sunday and $2 on Monday and the monies, as always, help fund the annual Sun Festival event. In the 35-year history of the Sun Festival Antique Fair, the show has generated over $120,000 for the Sun Festival and has also invested $15,000 in electrical upgrades for the arena. I would like to thank everyone in advance for attending this year’s show and a good turnout will ensure that the Sun Festival Antique Fair will return to its old haunts, with a full complement of dealers, in the arena in 2015. Liberals refuse to accept will of voters
Editor: Re: Working for good of Delta, letter to the editor, July 23 I continue to be disappointed by the Liberal party’s refusal to accept the will of the people of Delta South. We tried to have an MLA of the governing party represent us. This resulted in Delta South being treated poorly by the reigning party as our voice was unheard and unheeded in Victoria. That is the reason we have elected a representative to bring our voice and our concerns to the attention of government.
Delta North Liberal MLA Scott Hamilton once again shows his stripes when he accuses the voters of Delta South of not caring about their community when they call into question government initiatives they oppose. The point is, they do care about their community and are committed to ensuring that government takes their voices into consideration. This is something the Liberal government has not had a good track record of doing in B.C. Is it any wonder people are frustrated? Hamilton’s assertion that Delta South MLA Vicki
Huntington’s role is to oppose government misses the point entirely. As an independent, she is free to evaluate government initiatives on their merit for the citizens of Delta South and vote accordingly. If Hamilton were to do his research, he would find that our MLA has voted both for and against government legislation. She does not, as he must, toe the party line and blithely applaud any initiative put forward by government without consideration for the people of Delta South. Hamilton’s self-appointed mission to denigrate our
Many examples of unmitigated complaints over towers Editor: Re: Outdated info spurs fears, July 23 I want to challenge KRPI consultant Andrew Skotdal’s statement that “there have been relatively few complaints since the company assumed broadcasting at the station’s current transmission towers in Ferndale, Wash.” BBC took over the station in 2002, and the scores
of comments and letters from Ferndale residents documenting their frustration with blanketing interference from KRPI are dated 2005. These are contained in Attachment B of the informal complaint filed by the Ferndale group Residents Against HighPower Radio Interference. (Go to http://notowers.webs. com/Letters&Comments-

See also the record of testimony by frustrated Ferndale residents before Whatcom County council on Oct. 25, 2005 at http:// www.co.whatcom.wa.us/ council/2005/minutes/council/c1025.pdf.) electronics and communications devices relate not to the previous broadcaster, as Skotdal claims, but to KRPI. In proposing to relocate to Point Roberts, KRPI would increase its nighttime output from 10,000 to 50,000 watts, foretelling even worse blanketing interference for the people of this area. MLA’s achievements and promote the Liberal agenda in Delta South is embarrassingly obvious and unwelcome. He and all levels of government should be working with Huntington for the betterment of Delta, not ignoring the wishes of the electorate who put her there. Hamilton should take a lesson from his predecessor, who worked well with Huntington. Together, you could be a powerful force for good. If we wanted a Liberal apologist, we would have voted for one. August 1, 2014 The Delta Optimist A11 Letters to the Editor
It’s out of character Editor: The three communities of Delta each have a very distinctive character that draws people, tourists, sightseers and marketers to these communities. Of all three communities, Ladner has the most distinctive and historic character, a character that, to some degree, has been maintained with the infill approach to densification. It is imperative this character not be taken away. When seen from almost any perspective, the proposal for a five-storey condo building does not suit the village of Ladner. The fact that a number of variances are asked for in this proposal is telling. All would indicate the proposed building would do little to enhance the historic character of Ladner, especially in an area that is
already affected by a number of 1970s buildings. The density variance alone requires an increase of 36 per cent above and beyond the current zoning. This application should have been sent from the planning department to Delta council with only one comment stamped on the cover letter: unacceptable, please reject. Please, let’s keep densification at an acceptable level and stay within the OCP. The community has spent many hours helping put the OCP together, so civic officials should respect it. If variances are asked for let them be reasonable and let them come with appropriate returns to the community such as additional green spaces or public amenities that can be enjoyed by everyone. Peter van der Velden
Proposal good for Ladner Village
Editor: I support the Village Walk development proposed for 47A Avenue. Provided it remains within the scheme/look of the village, it brings more liv-
able options for those who are interested in downsizing or just starting out. The village charm isn’t being compromised, but in fact is being enhanced. Joe Walls
Tower issues couldn’t be resolved
Editor: Re: Outdated info spurs fears, July 23 KRPI consultant Andrew Skotdal states that all the complaints have been resolved, except for a handful, and that those issues (prior to 2006), as far as the FCC was concerned, were appropriately and ultimately addressed by BBC. Lawyer Linda Atkins makes the same claims. But if all of the Ferndale interference issues have been satisfactorily resolved as Skotdal and Atkins claim, why is BBC/KRPI spending the money to move the towers to Point Roberts? Skotdal also refers to the 50,000-watt CBU tower in Richmond. My wife and I lived 0.68 kilometres from that tower for eight years and I can assure you that despite many attempts, Telus and Shaw Cable were unable to resolve the interference issues. Jerry Cutler
BIRTHDAY MEMORY OF A LIFETIME The 2014 Boundary Bay Airshow may be in the books, but will certainly never be forgotten by one lucky young man. Andrew Bond, celebrating his 12th birthday on the day of the Airshow, was the lucky person selected to take to the skies with ‘Super Dave’ Mathieson. Daryl Goodwin, owner of Westcoast Instant Lawns, a volunteer member of the Boundary Bay Airshow Advisory Board of Directors and himself a pilot, sponsored the appearance of thrilling aerobatic pilot ‘Super Dave’ at this year’s Airshow. When given the chance to experience a flight with Dave in the Scheyden MX2 aircraft, Daryl generously suggested that this opportunity be offered to a child in attendance at the Airshow. After an exhilarating ride, complete with giant loops & dives, Andrew was all smiles and expressed his appreciation to Daryl Goodwin and ‘Super Dave’. It will be a hard act to follow for his birthday next year!

Department readies as fire danger intensifies Fire hazard rating at high, but could move to extreme BY
SANDOR GYARMATI
sgyarmati@delta-optimist.com
Delta has plenty of areas at risk of fire due to the current conditions but the fire department is ready to respond. That was the message from Delta fire Chief Dan Copeland in his presentation to Delta council this week about the department’s preparedness measures during this spell of hot weather. Noting the long range forecast is for warm, dry conditions, Copeland said an open burning ban is in effect for all areas and that fire, police and bylaw staff are patrolling parks, beaches and wilderness areas daily. The current fire hazard rating is high, but can move up to extreme depending on how hot things get over the coming days. The immediate forecast calls for continued sunshine and high temperatures into next week. Warning boards with the most current hazard rating can fluctuate quickly between moderate and high. An extreme fire hazard would mean the closure of places like the Delta Nature Reserve and Watershed Park. Burns Bog remains an area of great concern due to its vulnerability, even though most of the bog is closed to the public. The bog has experienced several difficult fires over the years and even the recent short period of rainfall doesn’t help much, warned Copeland. He said more than just a few days of rain are needed to penetrate the vegetation canopy covering the

A stretch of dry, hot weather has pushed the fire hazard rating to high. ground. Noting the situation is monitored closely, Copeland said significant penetration usually doesn’t occur until one or two weeks of rain. Several years ago, a fired burned for a week in a 200-hectare area in the southeast corner of the bog, a fire believed to have been started by human activity. A few years earlier another large fire, which burned for a couple of weeks, was believed to have started from a cigarette butt. A bog fire is particularly difficult to handle because it goes underground, spreading in many directions. The department devised a Burns Bog Fire Management Plan operations manual aimed at helping firefighters quickly and effectively deal with bog blazes. Last year, the department received its order of two new vehicles designed to help fight difficult fires, including a Wildland 2 quick response truck, a four-wheel drive vehicle that was the first of its kind in the province. The truck
is built to maneuver around some of the unique and challenging terrain. Meanwhile, a community wildfire protection plan that’s been in place since 2009 includes regular wildland firefighter training, while a special exercise was also conducted this year with Metro Vancouver. Copeland said park users are also a valuable resource. “The people who use the nature reserve and Watershed Park, they’re our best stewards in the area. They’re our eyes and ears out there and help us protect it,” he said. Some preventative measures that have been carried out included working with the engineering and parks departments to identify potentially vulnerable areas. That resulted in a pathways program, which involved thinning out trees and vegetation close to paths at Watershed Park and the nature reserve. Copeland said the department also follows a provincial manual to identify urban interface areas, including homes abutting heavily vegetated areas.

Legion donation helps ER The Delta Hospital Foundation recently received a $10,000 donation from the Tsawwassen branch of the Royal Canadian Legion. The pledge is part of the Legion’s annual “Making a Difference” sponsorship of the foundation’s two events: the Delta Health Golf Classic and Moonlight Gala. This most recent gift will fund a patient stretcher for the increasingly busy ER. Over the past few years, there has been an increase of 43 per cent in patient
visits and that number continues to increase as the Delta community ages. Since 1995, the Tsawwassen Legion has given over $150,000 to the Delta Hospital Foundation, which has given the hospital the ability to acquire a variety of equipment. Tsawwassen Legion president Gary Bain and members Lloyd Jones and Bruce Gates were pleased to be able to present the $10,000 cheque to the foundation. “We are proud to support Delta Hospital Foundation,”
said Bain. “Through the foundation, we continue to contribute to the welfare of the veterans, youth and members of this great community we live in.” Delta Hospital Foundation’s special events manager, Sharla De Groote, said, “We are honoured to receive such generous and loyal support from the Tsawwassen Legion. Over the years we have been able to rely on their ongoing support to help Delta Hospital’s medical team deliver quality care for their patients.”

What’s missing? I have been reading a book recently by David Janzen called The Intentional Christian Community Handbook; for Idealists, Hypocrites, and Wannabe Disciples of Jesus. It speaks of the driving force that draws people into a search for meaning, significance and transformation. In my journey within the Christian community, it is God inspired, life affirming, focused on service to others and personally engaging (not an exhaustive list). When one or more of these qualities is found to be missing, it tends to lead to a diminished form of individualism, turning away from community, opting for a tendency toward cliques. This was the sense I got as I read the Optimist’s Community Comment of July 16 regarding putting the
“fun” in funerals. While I agree that the changing social trend is a reality and I don’t need to safeguard any religious claim on the territory, a certain sadness settled on me. In moments like this it is helpful for me to return to thoughtful people who have influenced societal change not only through words and ideas but also by intentional actions. “One of the marvellous things about community is that it enables us to welcome and help people in a way we couldn’t as individuals. When we pool our strength and share the work and responsibility, we can welcome many people, even those in deep distress, and perhaps help them find self-confidence and inner healing.” — Jean Vanier, Community And Growth

Knitting Sisters share the warmth Handmade blankets and muffs are donated to Mountain View Manor BY
JESSICA KERR
jkerr@delta-optimist.com
One local group is working to help keep the residents at a South Delta long-term care facility a little warmer. The Knitting Sisters Group last month donated 30 handmade blankets and muffs to Mountain View Manor to keep residents warm during outings. The Knitting Sisters is a group of women from Ladner, Tsawwassen and Richmond who knit or crochet for a long list of local and regional worthy causes, including Ronald McDonald House, Easter Seals House, B.C. Children’s Hospital, South Delta Food Bank, Food on the Corner and Delta Police Victim Services. The group started in 2008 making hats for cancer patients and over the years has expanded to making comforting items for many more causes. The women knit and donate hats and toques, scarves, gloves, slippers, lap robes and baby

items. While the group does get donated yarn, many of the knitters purchase most of what they use. The Delta Hospital Auxiliary donated some of the yarn used to knit the blankets and muffs for the Mountain View Manor residents. Yarn donations can be dropped off
at the hospital information desk or gift shop. The Knitting Sisters Group consistently has around 50 members. The members that contributed to the Mountain View donation are: Donna, Denise, Alice, Caroline, Marie, Dorothy, Jeanette and Florence.
The group meets twice a month at McKee House in Ladner to exchange ideas and socialize. New members are always welcome. For more information, contact Brenda Henderson at 604-946-8172 or bucks@ dccnet.com, or Donna Miller at 604-948-0088 or dmiller@smartt.com.
There are times in our lives when we need help or want to help others. FundAid, Glacier Media’s crowdfunding initiative, taps into our newspapers’ deep roots in their communities to let people know that these needs exist.

A
piece of Second World War history will pay a visit to Boundary Bay Airport next week. The Commemorative Air Force Airbase Arizona is flying its B-25J bomber Maid in the Shade to the East Ladner airport as part of a summer tour. It will be on display to the public from Monday to Thursday. Visitors will be able to tour the aircraft, “breathe in the history” and talk with volunteers from the nonprofit organization about
the plane. Flights are also being offered. “Ride of a life time, views are great, no matter where you sit,” says Russ Gilmore, one of CAF Airbase Arizona’s B-25 pilots. “You can feel all those 1700hp kick in on take off, you will get a taste of what our veterans did flying aircraft like our B-25 in combat and the sacrifices they made for the freedom we enjoy today. All gave some and some gave all,” he says in an email to the Optimist. Flight prices are $395 US (waist gunner) and $650 US
(flight deck). Gilmore is a retired commercial airline pilot who volunteers with CAF Airbase Arizona and pilots both Maid in the Shade along with the group’s B-17G Flying Fortress Sentimental Journey. He says frequently asked questions by visitors include where are the repaired bullet holes and was this the type of aircraft used on Doolittle’s Tokyo Raid. The B-25 Mitchell was made famous by the Doolittle Raiders on April 18, 1942, states a press release from CAF Airbase
Arizona, noting 16 B-25s took off the deck of the USS Hornet and bombed Tokyo four months after the attack on Pearl Harbor. “The B-25 served in both theaters of war in many roles from bomber to transport. After the war it continued service best known for its role as a fire bomber,” the release states. The plane visiting Boundary Bay Airport saw action in the Second World War, flying 15 combat missions over Italy between Nov. 4 and Dec. 31, 1944, says Sharon Peterson, PR rep for the B-25 summer tour.
That was also the year it came out of the factory, making the plane 70 years old, she adds. The bomber was donated to the CAF in 1981 and assigned to Airbase Arizona. The organization spent close to 30 years restoring the plane to its Second World War condition, Peterson says. The plane, after so many years of restoration work being done in the shade of the hangar at Falcon Field in Mesa, got the name Maid in the Shade by way of vote, Peterson explains. The CAF was founded
to acquire, restore and preserve in flying condition a complete collection of combat aircraft that were flown by all military services of the United States, and aircraft of other nations, for the education and enjoyment of present and future generations of Americans, the organization’s website states. The bomber will be at the main terminal of Boundary Bay Airport from Aug. 4 to 7 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. (The plane is expected to arrive at 10 a.m. on Aug. 4.) For flight reservations, call 780-263-1425 or email b25rc@azcaf.org.

Boating in Britain’s Midlands Distances can be deceiving while sailing in narrow vessel BY
CHERIE THIESSEN
Optimist contributor
I should never have had that second cup of coffee! We’re inching along about 15 metres above the A3400 highway and I’m trying to keep my hands steady on the tiller so as not to bump either side of the aqueduct. I figure I have a couple of centimetres to spare on either side and why aren’t there railings on both sides? We’re just leaving Wootton Wawen after exploring its 1,100-year-old Saxon sanctuary and this crossing, built in 1813, is by far the most adrenalin pumping of the three aqueducts we encounter on the waterway. Reaching the other end without a bump, I beam proudly as the crew from a waiting canal boat applauds. It’s day five of our pilgrimage to Shakespeare’s Stratford-Upon-Avon, only 30 kilometres away by road from our starting point in the Midlands at Stockton Top Marina but a six-day trip for us. Distances are deceiving in a narrow boat: Five kilometres can take five hours if there are copious locks between you and your destination – and a queue of other boats ahead of you.
Flowers adorn a canal boat home.
There are no boat queues this rainy, early May morning, but copious locks have, indeed, lurked in wait – the famous “staircase” of Hatton Locks on day two, for example. Completed in 1799, its 21 locks climb 50 metres over three kilometres and are then punctuated with the 396-metre long Shrewley Tunnel, which delighted
in anointing all four of us with icy rivulets when least expected. We chose this route for the fun and challenge of its locks, all 152 of them (return), its aqueducts, and its sleepy, scenic countryside, all part of our adventure as we head to the Bard’s hometown. Our boat is the 17-metre Florence Edith, an impres-
sive size until you realize that a narrow boat is called that for good reason. It’s only two metres wide. These canals and locks were originally designed for narrow boats carrying coal, sugar, tea and spices, so modern craft still need to emulate their ancestors in order to squeeze into those lean locks. The Florence Edith, hired
South Delta
Heels
from Kate Boats, has a stateroom, 1.5 bathrooms and an eating area, galley and lounge, and both the eating area and the lounge convert into beds, perfect for two couples, because this is one vacation that should be shared, splitting the work and doubling the laughs. Cruising to Stratford entailed leaving the wider
and busier Grand Union Canal and navigating a frighteningly abrupt elbow turn under a low bridge into the South Stratford Canal. The hair-raising narrowness of the locks had a positive side, however: there was only one gate to open at each end instead of two, and although more challenging for the skipper, it made the crew’s jobs much easier. An already scenic trip soon trumped itself as we chugged dreamily past black and white footbridges, grazing sheep, undulating green-hedged fields, and rainbow-coloured canal boats spilling with rooftop flowers and folk art, on our hunt for the perfect happy hour tie-up. Last night we couldn’t resist a spot near the country pub and ancient church, but tonight’s choice is a pastoral one, far from traffic and nudged by wheat sheaves and sheep. Wine on deck chairs on the towpath is the daily routine, followed by dinner al fresco on our floating restaurant. Fans of the Man in Black will want to mark Sunday, Aug. 17 on their calendar. Tony Barton and Tracy Neff star as Johnny Cash and June Carter in Ring of Fire, a tribute show they’ll put on during the Ladner Village Quilt Walk & Classic Car Show. The nostalgic show takes a glance at the man behind the music while presenting the adorable slapstick comedy that endeared Carter to the world of country and
western music. Barton and Neff are scheduled to perform Ring of Fire from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. The audience will be able to sing along to staple songs such as Folsom Prison Blues, I Walk The Line, Jackson, Ring of Fire and discover tunes such as Hurt, I’ve Been Everywhere and Juke Box Blues. The pair recently performed the tribute show at this year’s Ladner Pioneer May Days. The Ladner Village Quilt Walk & Classic Car Show
is now in its 11th year. It takes place Sunday, Aug. 17 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Ladner Village. It was estimated that about 10,000 attendees came last year to see roughly 400 classic cars and a myriad of colourful and creative quilts that are put on display in many village business windows. For more on the car and quilt show, check out the Ladner Business Association’s website at ladnerbusiness.com. For more on Ring of Fire, visit www.tonybarton.biz.

Name: Laurie Occupation: Delta Parks, Recreation & Culture employee – soon to be retired! What was the activity? The 34th Annual Polar Bear Swim Where and when did this take place? Centennial Beach at Boundary Bay Regional Park on January 1st. How often do you participate? I come to the Polar Bear swim every year. How long have you been involved? I’ve worked for Parks, Recreation & Culture for 38 years, and attended this event at least 30 times! Why did you get involved in this activity? One of the best parts of my job is when I get to watch the members of the community enjoy themselves at a special event. What do you like best about this activity? It’s a wonderful family activity, a great way to get people outside on a cold winter day, and I love seeing the expression on the swimmers faces when they run into the water!

How does it benefit your life? It inspires me when I see the swimmers come back year after year to participate in this event. What other things do you do to keep active? I am very involved with the annual Tour de Delta cycle event, and enjoy activities with my family. Did you know that families that play together stay together? The Polar Bear Swim is just one of the many allages events held each year in Delta. This year the oldest swimmer was Lui Porc (73) and the swimmer from farthest away was from Australia. It was a wonderful family outing and a great way to kick off 2014. If you would like to stay informed about the many other great all-ages activities and events offered throughout the year in Delta, consult the seasonal Leisure Guide, visit www.delta.ca or call (604) 952-3000. Islanders looking for gold in Vernon

Jr. lacrosse team heads to provincials as three-time West Coast League champions Delta Islanders are in the Okanagan this weekend hoping to take care of some unfinished business. Fresh off capturing their third consecutive West Coast Junior Lacrosse League championship, the junior “B” squad are looking for their first provincial title in recent memory, having finished third and second respectively the past two seasons. The Islanders open play Saturday versus host and Okanagan champion Vernon Tigers, then play a pair of games Sunday against the Kamloops Venom and Island champion Saanich Tigers. The top two teams meet in Monday’s gold medal game. “I think we have a great shot at winning it this year,” said Delta co-coach Sam Thauli who is joined behind the bench this season by Dave Haller and Tyler Calderwood. “We have something like 14 or 15 third-year players and they are pretty hungry for it. Typically at this level, you might see three or four very good players but I can honestly say this team is solid from top to bottom. “At the same time, we can’t afford to look past anyone in this kind of format. The Okanagan teams have traditionally been tough. They always have some junior ‘A’ calibre kids who have chosen to play at home instead.” The Islanders dug deep to become WCJLL champions, winning the final two games of the best-of-three series with the Coquitlam Adanacs. It marked the third straight year the rivals had met for the championship. The Adanacs opened the series with a 10-8 win at the South Delta recreation centre. Delta pulled even with a 9-6 overtime victory in Coquitlam, scoring three times in the 10-minute extra session. The locals then took the momentum from the emotional outcome into game three last Saturday at Sungod Arena where they dominated in 13-7 triumph. The Islanders had finished the regular season with a 15-0-1 record, while the Adanacs were right behind them at 14-0-2. “We just came out flat in the first game and weren’t clicking offensively,” added Thauli. “Even the second game we started out of kind of slow but we took our game to another level in overtime and it carried right over to the last game.”

McNamaras finish 17th at U21 Worlds in Cyprus Tsawwassen’s Megan and Nicole McNamara made an impressive debut at the Federation Internationale De Volleyball (FIVB) Under 21 World Beach Volleyball Championships in Larnaka Cyprus. Facing a steady diet of older competition, the 16-year-old twins advanced to the main draw where they went on to finish 17th overall. The girls had to take part in a 20 team qualification tournament on the blazing hot courts of Finikoudes beach. Temperatures reached 35C
with high humidity as well. The McNamaras defeated the home team of Kontou/Leonidou (21-5, 21-6) and Greece’s Parisaki/Manavi (21-18, 21-15) to move on. After a fairly easy win over the Cypriot team the twins had a shaky start in the final qualification round match against Ioanna Parisaki and Dimitra Manavi. “The first set was much closer than the second”, Nicole said. “We were a bit nervous and we did not know our opponents.”
The sisters were enthusiastic about their first FIVB U21 event . “It’s very well organized with hospitable people. Only the heat was bothering us, but there’s nothing you can do about that,” added Megan. Next up for the McNamaras is representing Canada at the upcoming Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing China. The soon-to-be Grade 12 students at South Delta secondary have made a verbal commitment to continue their beach volleyball careers at UCLA in September 2015.

South Delta rugby standouts playing for B.C. at nationals Fresh off helping Zone 4 win silver in Rugby Sevens at the B.C. Winter Games in Nanaimo, a pair of South Delta standouts will be playing for their province at next week’s U14 National Rugby Championships in Calgary. Michael Calvert, 14, and Jarvis Dashkewytch, 13, have been named to the B.C. squad that will be looking for gold on the other side of the Rockies at the five day tournament which starts on Wednesday. Both have enjoyed terrific seasons, having helped the South Delta Sun Devils place third at the Fraser Valley Grade 8 Championships. Another local product — Michael Ward — has been selected as a reserve for the B.C. team. Meanwhile, former SDSS standout Shane Dagg helped B.C. place second at the U19 national championships in Newfoundland. B.C. secured the runner-up spot with a 34-10 win over the Atlantic Rock to finish the championships with a 3-1 record. Its only loss was a narrow 14-5 decision to eventual champions Ontario. It was B.C.’s first defeat at the nationals in three years.
