Film crews were busy at several spots around downtown Ladner Village Wednesday shooting the TV pilot Impastor. The drama stars Michael Rosenbaum (Smallville’s Lex Luther) as Buddy, a man running from his debts, who cons the residents of a small town into thinking he’s their new gay pastor.

The proponent behind a controversial proposal to build a five-storey residential building in Ladner Village says a revised plan will be submitted instead. Rolly Skov said his family and their architect listened to concerns of nearby residents and are willing to come up with something that’s more in keeping with the current Official Community Plan,

even though it’s been many years since the document has seen any significant changes to meet current needs. “With the outcry that we had, and we’d need a revised OCP on that site, I don’t think council would want to deal with that. So we decided how we can work it with townhouses and what we’re working on is that everything fits in the OCP and the only revisions would be minor,” he said. His original plan for a five-

storey condo project got a rough reception at a public information meeting at the Ladner Community Centre last month. About 200 residents showed up to overwhelmingly voice their displeasure, many saying the OCP should be followed. Noting other condo buildings of similar size exist just outside the village core, Skov in an interview following that meeting said their vision was to build an attractive complex that adds a much needed

supply to a thin housing variety for senior downsizers and young families. The Skovs, who are Ladner residents, acquired the four properties at the corner of 47A Avenue and 48B Street (4875, 4889, 4901 47A Ave. and 4770 48B St.), consolidating the site in a plan to construct a complex. The original plan would have required an OCP amendment to increase the maxim density See REVISED PLAN page 3

The annual Quilt Walk & Classic Car Show is back in Ladner Village again this weekend. Thousands of residents and visitors will flock to the streets of Ladner Village for the yearly event this weekend. Hosted by the Ladner Business Association (LBA) and The Quilted Bear, the event is in its 11th year and typically attracts in the area of 10,000 people to see the hundreds of classic cars and colourful quilts. This year’s event is slated for Sunday, Aug. 17. The free event typically attracts hundreds of classic cars from around the region — many vintage car owners have attended the show every year to proudly show off their restored vehicles. Each year a myriad of colourful and creative quilts are put on display in many Village business windows while the cars are displayed along 48th Avenue and Delta Street. In addition to the cars and quilts, organizers have also lined up lots of prizes, vendors, refreshments and entertainment. This year, Tony Barton and Tracy Neff will entertain spectators with Ring of Fire, a tribute show to Johnny Cash and June Carter. Ring of Fire will run from 12:30 p.m. until 2:30 p.m. Both the cars and the quilts are on display between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. this year, and the Ladner Legion is hosting its annual pancake breakfast from 8 a.m. until 11 a.m.

Sher-E-Punjab has application for AM 600 signal rejected; CRTC to hold public hearing BY

SANDOR GYARMATI

sgyarmati@delta-optimist.com

The company behind the contentious proposal to build several radio towers at the Point Roberts/ Tsawwassen border has lost a separate bid for an AM frequency in the Lower Mainland. Sher-E-Punjab was one of almost a dozen applicants vying for available AM and FM frequencies with AM 600 being the most desired. The Canadian Radio Television Commission (CRTC) held a hearing earlier this year, hearing from Sher-E-Punjab’s chief operating officer Gurdial Singh (Dale) Badh. The company wanted the AM 600 signal, saying it needs a “repatriation” to a Canadian frequency. However, not only was the company’s application rejected, it appears to be in hot water with the commission, which decided to hold a public hearing this fall on the activities of Sher-EPunjab as well as another broadcaster. The commission, noting it needs to examine the issue of broadcasting services transmitted from locations outside Canada to serve Canadian markets, stated, “In light of the record, it therefore appears that Sher-E-Punjab may be carrying on a broadcasting undertaking in whole or in part in Canada without a licence or pursuant to an exemption contrary to the Broadcasting Act. “Therefore, pursuant to section 12 of the Broadcasting Act, the Commission calls Sher-EPunjab Radio Broadcasting Inc. to a public hearing in order to inquire into, hear

Sher-E-Punjab will also be required to show cause why a mandatory order should not be issued requiring Sher-E-Punjab Radio Broadcasting Inc. to cease and desist operating a broadcasting undertaking at Richmond, British Columbia, or elsewhere in Canada, except in compliance with the Broadcasting Act.” Although Badh was not successful in landing a frequency here, his brother Suki Badh of the separate South Fraser Broadcasting was given approval by the CRTC to get a station running on 107.7 FM, to be called My Surrey FM. Meanwhile, BBC

NEW PLAN from page 1 allowed in the area, as well as amending the OCP and Ladner Area Plan to increase the maximum building height from three storeys to five. The original plan had a ground level parking for 76 vehicles, three storeys of condos and a fifth storey that would have had two penthouses, as well as a rooftop garden. The Skovs planned to occupy the top two penthouse units. The revised plan will see the number of units roughly cut in half, changing from condos to townhouse units

to decrease the density. The height would be lowered to three stories of residential and the ground level parkade would be scrapped. Skov reiterated Ladner still lacks enough affordable condos. He said another public information meeting is planned, likely on Sept. 10. Deputy planning director Marcy Sangret, noting a formal application still has to be submitted, said council has directed staff to send another letter to area residents about the changes. Resident Lynne Webb,

Broadcasting Inc, connected with Sher-E-Punjab, still wants to construct five 45metre (150-foot) steel towers at an undeveloped lot on McKenzie Way in Point Roberts, about 330 metres from the border. The towers would transmit South Asian radio station KRPI, AM 1550, but many residents here and in Point Roberts have been fighting the plan. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) granted a construction permit but a conditional use permit is still required from Whatcom County. A county hearing is set for this fall. Also known as SherE-Punjab, the company currently broadcasts using antenna located in Ferndale, WA, but wants to move them closer and have a who gathered a petition against the original proposal, said Ladner Village residents would need to see if the new plan conforms to the OCP and the area plan when it comes to height and density, but form and character also need to be considered to ensure the project fits into the neighbourhood. “I am pleased that the developer has moved away from the huge condo building. It appears he is listening to the community and he has my thanks for that,” Webb said. “It also appears he is moving in the right direction and I am hopeful the new design is something

stronger 50,000-watt all-day signal. Although KRPI currently has the FCC licence to transmit from Ferndale, Sher-E-Punjab uses that tower infrastructure to broadcast from studios in Richmond for a Lower Mainland audience, something has gotten the CRTC’s attention. Sher-E-Punjab claims it rents the current tower array from BBC Broadcasting Inc, which is registered in the state of Washington. The company that owns and rents out the land on which the current tower array sits, meanwhile, is called BBC Holdings. Opponents argue BBC Broadcasting and BBC Holdings are shell companies for the Badh family that owns Sher-E-Punjab. During the hearing for

the applications for frequencies here, the CRTC panel was also curious about the relationships. It’s not clear how the CRTC taking issue with Sher-E-Punjab could impact the U.S. application to build towers in Point Roberts. Concerned about the economic, environmental and social impacts, the process, as well as blanketing interference of radio waves, the Cross Border Coalition to Stop the Radio Towers says the Canadian government should have voiced objection. Opponents on this side of the border continue to gather signatures on a petition to be sent to the House of Commons demanding government intervention. The petition is available at dozens of Tsawwassen businesses.

An old building at the Boundary Bay Airport is getting a new lease on life. Delta council this week approved the remediation of the heritage hangar at the airport in Ladner. Originally constructed in 1941 and still in use today, the hangar has deteriorated over time. Significant remediation work is required to ensure that it continues to safely function in the years

include replacing rotted structural columns; replacing windows, remediating rail tracks and metal portions, and refinishing wood portions, of the doors; replacing siding; and assessing the roof, electrical system, and developing a plan for any future work. The contract for the work has been awarded to Wood Projects Ltd. at a cost of $685,650. The cost of the project is covered by proceeds from the sale of airport land.

to come. The hangar, which is currently used for airplane and helicopter storage, is on both the Delta and Canadian heritage registries. “Therefore, every effort is being made to maintain the heritage look and feel of the building through the remediation work; however, the first priority is to ensure the building is safe, sound and waterproof,” states a staff report. Unlicensed driver caught after running yellow light The purpose of the Crime Beat is to educate and inform the public about some of the property crime trends occurring in South Delta and other files of interest. If you see anything occurring that you believe to be suspicious, call 911 for in progress crimes and emergencies or 604-946-4411 for other assistance. The following are some of the calls the Delta Police responded to in the previous week: Tsawwassen • August 4, 1 a.m., 52nd Street & 7A Avenue: Police pulled over a vehicle that had failed to stop at a stop sign. Police could smell alcohol in the vehicle and the driver was asked to give a breath sample. The driver had a learner’s N license, which has zero tolerance for alcohol, and was given a 12-hour roadside suspension. Her driver’s license was also seized. • August 7, 3 a.m., 1500block Enderby Avenue: Complainant reported someone had attempted to take fuel from several of his vehicles parked outside his home. A police investigation revealed that several neighbours had also had their vehicle’s fuel caps tampered with during the same time period. Neighbours were unable to identify any witnesses or suspects. • August 7, 3:40 p.m., 700-block 52nd Street: Complainant called police to report her mother was home alone when she heard someone tampering with the front door lock. When she checked the door, she found it open but with the chain

lock still intact. The complainant was quite sure the dead bolt had been locked. No signs of any disturbance around the property. The complainant was advised to have her locks changed on the front door. • August 8, 1:39 a.m., Highway 17A & Ladner Trunk Road: Police received information about a possibly intoxicated female leaving a businesses heading to Vancouver. Police located the vehicle on the highway and pulled

it over. Two breath samples provided by the driver both read “Fail” and she was given a 90-day roadside suspension, her license was seized and the vehicle was impounded. • August 9, 1:08 a.m., 5500-block 12th Avenue: Police observed a vehicle leaving the parking lot of a local business and going 80 km/h in a 50 km/h zone. The driver was stopped and provided two breath samples which both read “Fail”. As a result he was given an immediate 90-day roadside suspension, his license was seized, and his vehicle impounded. Ladner • August 4, 1:10 p.m., 6400-block Ladner Trunk Road: Complainant reported the theft of a backpack and contents from inside his vehicle. A suspect gained access to the vehicle through a back window which had been left open. • August 4, 1 a.m., Highway 10 & Highway 17A: Police stopped a

vehicle that had run a yellow light. The driver of the vehicle was unable to produce a valid driver’s license and a check of the police database found that the license had been cancelled. The driver was arrested and then released on a promise to appear in court at a future date. The vehicle was impounded. • August 5, 9:45 p.m., 4600-block Evergreen Lane: Complainant reported he heard yelling coming from an apartment and was concerned. Police attended and found an extremely intoxicated male who was refusing to leave. The male was arrested and taken to cells to be released when sober. • August 7, 12 p.m., 5200-block 48th Avenue: A store detective observed a male youth put candy in his back pack and walk out without paying. The detective walked the youth back to the store and contacted his mother. The youth was released to the mother without charges, but the mother brought the youth into the Ladner Community Police Station to have her son spoken to by a police officer. • August 7, 7:50 p.m., Ladner Trunk Road & Harvest Drive: Police stopped a vehicle after a check of the license plate indicated the owner had a suspended driver’s license. The registered owner was not driving the vehicle but a check of the driver’s license found he too had a suspended license. The driver was arrested and then released on a promise to appear in court at a future date. The vehicle was impounded and the driver and his passenger left the area in a taxi.

Walk event a big success $28,200 raised for Prader-Willi Syndrome research One small step turned into a big fundraising success over the weekend. The One Small Step walk in South Delta took place on Sunday. The event surpassed an initial goal of $25,000, raising $28,200. The annual walk, which is in its third year, benefits Prader-Willi Syndrome research. Prader-Willi Syndrome (PWS) is caused by a genetic defect of the 15th chromosome and affects one in 15,000 births and one in 50,000 people, including three-year-old Ellie MacDonald. Prader-Willi carries a variety of symptoms, including low muscle tone, small stature, fair skin and hair colouring, hypothyroidism, sleep apnea, slow metabolism and developmental delays. Not every person with PWS will exhibit every symptom, however, they all have one — a truly insatiable appetite. In people with PWS, a part of the brain, the hypothalamus, malfunctions and the brain never receives the signal that the individual has had enough to eat. People with PWS can

Without strict controls on calorie intake and exercise, they can quickly become morbidly obese, which can lead to other health issues, including diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart and respiratory problems. Currently, the only treatment for PWS is daily

growth hormone therapy injections and while that helps with strength, growth and brain development, it does nothing to quell the constant hunger. Mom Susanne SzaboMacDonald said fundraising gives the family hope. There are drugs that are currently in clinical trials that give hope that a cure for the insatiable hunger will be found.

MURPHY’S LAW These documents sure are doing a lot of living lately. It’s become commonplace these days to suggest the land use plans that have been created for our communities are “living documents” that are subject to change. We’re continually reminded, primarily by developers and politicians, that these plans are not cast in stone and can be modified to suit changing sensibilities. I understand the rationale and it makes sense to build in some wiggle room to accommodate whatever the future may hold, but the whole idea of these documents — both Delta’s Official Community Plan and the area plans for each of the three communities — is to provide residents with certainty when it comes to land use in their neighbourhoods. A lot of time and taxpayer money are invested every time one of these plans is created or updated so you’d think we’d stick to it pretty closely or there would be no point in devising it in the first place. It would be a colossal waste of resources if all we’re going to do is modify it every time a non-conforming project comes along. Yet more and more development applications are coming forward these days seeking those very amendments. The projects aren’t in keeping with what the public has envisioned but that doesn’t stop developers from giving it a go. I’ll admit that sometimes an amendment can make sense and might actually improve upon a plan, but more often than not it seems like a case of the developer pushing the envelope in the hopes of maximizing profits. I get the game they’re playing, but it’s not fair to residents to force them to continually come out to meetings and hearings to ensure the provisions of these land use plans are upheld. They shouldn’t have to demand politicians adhere to the documents, they should expect it will be done. When a proposal comes forward that doesn’t mesh with the plans that have been set out for the area, you’d think it wouldn’t get beyond the first desk it hits at municipal hall. Maybe on the odd occasion there’s some wiggle room available, but as a general rule, if it doesn’t conform, it needs to be sent back for revisions. I find the whole situation a bit like making vacation plans: Either you book and pay for a hotel room or you wing it and see what you can get when you arrive, but you don’t do both. It doesn’t make sense to spend money on one hotel room only to stay at a place across the street. That doesn’t strike me to be good planning.

South Delta poised to become industrial heartland IAN ROBERTSON

COMMUNITY COMMENT A few weeks ago I was enjoying a summer break. Coffee in hand, I was scanning the newspaper when I saw an ad by the National Energy Board (NEB). It was about exporting Liquid Natural Gas (LNG) from Delta! Having read about many and various proposals for LNG from Kitimat and Prince Rupert, I was curious. A major LNG export operation from Delta? Some months ago I reported on the expansion of LNG at the FortisBC plant on Tilbury Island. Fortis supplies our natural gas and has recently decided to offer LNG to commercial truckers and was looking for other applications. The NEB ad announced that a new organization was in the business. Called Wespac Midstream

Debate over facts on radio towers continues

Editor: Re: Outdated into spurs fears, July 23 In the July 23 edition of the Optimist, Andy Skotdal, consultant for BBC Broadcasting Inc. (BBC) adds his voice over fears of blanketing interference. About the only thing correct in the article is that BBC purchased the Ferndale towers in 2002. In 1986, then station (KNTR) was granted an increase in daytime power to 50,000 watts. As soon as the power was turned up, Ferndale experienced the powerful storm caused by blanketing interference. If, as Skotdal claims, KRPI addressed the blanketing interference concerns of Ferndale residents, then why in 2005 did seven community members submit a 250 page informal objection to the FCC, which included 1,162 signatures on a petition? Why did BBC’s own engineering firm submit the following statement in their 2011 report to the FCC to move the towers from Ferndale to Point Roberts: “Organized opposition from a group of community residents in Ferndale (supported by letters of opposition from elected officials in local, state, and federal government) led to a contentious and voluminous license renewal process that left the community of Ferndale as a ‘poisoned well’. While the FCC ultimately approved KRPI’s license renewal application, BBC immediately retained Hatfield & Dawson to assist in finding a new site for the KRPI transmitter that would relieve Ferndale residents of the problems that the current location had caused in an effort to repair ties with a community that no longer wants a transmitter site and is unwilling to support the station”.

These statements were similarly echoed by BBC’s vice-president/director, Gurdial (Dale) Badh, owner of the Point Roberts property, in his declaration to the FCC. Mr. Badh goes on to say that the Point Roberts site “was zoned for use consistent with large AM towers and was surrounded by other large parcels with little or no residential homes in the area”. Since Mr. Badh purchased the Point Roberts parcel personally, he drove through Tsawwassen to get to his property and knows full well that his statement is absolutely false. Andrew Skotdal can’t have it both ways. As BBC’s consultant and PR representative, he is well aware of the long history faced in Ferndale and by supporting the move to Point Roberts, he is also aware of the misrepresentations and lack of candor BBC submitted to the FCC in their construction permit application. As an industry veteran he should know better. Mr. Skotdal is not immune to his own radio station troubles. In 2009, his station (KRKO) was granted permits to build two 199-foot towers in the Snohomish River Valley after a lengthy court fight. Two of his radio towers were toppled by vandals and a banner with ELF, or Earth Liberation Front, was left at the scene. Mr. Skotdal’s words ring hollow when he says “any radio frequency interference problems that may arise are easy to resolve.” All the lawyers, engineers and consultants in the world can say that KRPI is committed to being a good neighbour, but as evidenced by their own admission, being a good neighbor didn’t work out so well for the people in Ferndale. Delta’s branding misses mark

Editor: We have lived in Delta for over 20 years. Three children have grown up and never spent a day in anything other than a Delta school or recreational association. We are proud of our wonderful community. Branding of the municipality of Delta has missed the mark. I don’t know the think-

ing around the selection of a bull rush plant as our corporate symbol, but perhaps it is time to revisit this. It does not translate well onto an ice stencil for our municipal arenas. Some young hockey players call it a “hotdog on a stick.” I would like Delta to become known as a national democratic leader. With our new federal riding of a

consolidated Delta municipality, we have a chance to build something unique in Canada. Delta could become the one riding in Canada where everybody votes. It would be an important point of pride to live in the riding with the highest voter participation rate in the country. Why not? David Peterson

The tension in the outer office during interrogation was broken when Jasper emerged to announce that the tall dark stranger had agreed to become one of the good guys. Code name: Agent A. Jasper had turned his first agent! Vicki, Bernadette, Yvonne and Antony dedicated themselves to making Jasper’s spy experience one that he will remember always and for that my wife and I convey our deep thanks. The front door opened a crack in response to the prearranged secret knock and Bernadette checked our bona fides before issuing us with security passes which allowed us to enter the office of the Chief Spy, Agent V. The classified discussion between the two agents was interrupted by a front office call from Yvonne saying that a suspicious man was lurking just outside the office. Peering through the drawn blinds J and V confirmed the presence of a mysterious male furtively taking pictures with a camera which hid his facial features. Bernadette guided Jasper out the back door to sneak up on the surreptitious shutter bug who, once apprehended, realized the jig was up and was taken into custody without incident.

Local student brings home 4-H scholarship BY

Delta’s Ashley Gilliland has become one of eight recipients of the CIBC 4-H Post Secondary Scholarships. Members of 4-H clubs from across Canada applied for eight $1,000 scholarships. The scholarships were open to members of the club who are planning

to pursue a post-secondary education in the field of engineering, arts, science, business, or health in the fall of 2014. The club has partnered with CIBC with the shared goal of supporting members by furthering their education and opportunities in today’s leading career fields. “We recognize that Canada’s economic prosperity depends on an edu-

cated and skilled workforce, which means supporting youth to ensure they have the resources to reach their full potential,” said Dino Medves, senior vice-president, commercial banking, CIBC. Gilliland will be attending the University of Alberta in the fall for a bachelor of science and animal health. Her ultimate goal is to study at

the Western College of Veterinary Medicine so she can become a veterinarian. “I’ve applied to a lot of scholarships, some through 4-H and some through the community... so far I’ve made $11,500. It’s almost paid for my first year of university, which is great,” Gilliland said. According to her father Brian Gilliland, Ashley has been involved with 4-H for

The lamb club offers agricultural education in raising and processing sheep as well as various wool craft projects like wool felting, knitting, crocheting and making yarn. The four Hs in the club’s name come from a pledge made by the members. “We pledge our Head, Heart, Hands and Health to our club, community and our country.” It’s one of Canada’s longest running youth organizations for people between the ages of eight and 21. The club was established in 1913. It currently has more than 25,000 members and 7,700 volunteers.

Drummers on tap at libraries

As summer starts winding to a close, there are still lots of activities going on at local libraries. Japanese drum group Uzume Taiko will be at both libraries on Wednesday. Experience the heart-stopping pulse of Japanese taiko drums combined with beautiful flute melodies and storytelling. Join members of awardwinning, world famous Uzume Taiko as they take you on an intimate journey through the world of taiko. The performance runs at the Tsawwassen library from 10:30 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. The group will then move on to the Ladner library from 1 to 1:45 p.m. The Summer Reading Club continues until the end of the month. Beautiful paradox Ocean-side, summer breezes, campers and hitch-hikers are all a part of the beautiful backdrop of British Columbia in August. I love to sit and watch the people saunter down the streets and wonder where they’ve been or where they are going. But the other day, I saw the most amazing sight. A young man sat perched on the edge of the sidewalk. His backpack must have contained all of his earthly possessions and he looked as if he had been sleeping rough for quite some time. His hair was unwashed, his jeans were dirty and he had let his beard grow to an impressive size. But as I looked closer, there he was tapping his fingers across a keyboard on his little iPad. Welcome to the 21st Century! We certainly do live in a world

of paradox — startling contrasts of sights and sounds. The writer of the letter to the church in Galatia certainly knew about contrasts. Paul knew about his society that put people in little boxes depending on their gender, age or religious affiliation. His response was clear that in God’s eyes and heart we are all beloved. For he writes, “There is no longer Jew or Greek, there is no longer slave or free, there is no longer male and female; for all of you are one in Christ Jesus.” (Gal 3:28) Being one in Christ Jesus, gives us freedom to be who and what we are and know that together we can create an amazing tapestry that is God’s beautiful world right here in “beautiful British Columbia.”

Locals snag awards at first SunFest car show

South Delta classic car owners dominated the winner’s circle earlier this month at the first ever Tsawwassen Sun Festival Classic Car Show n Shine. Out of more than 150 entries, South Delta car owners won 10 out of 15 awards, and eight of the local winners were from Tsawwassen. “Which is exceptional,” said organizer Don MacAllister. Tsawwassen’s Rod Maksym was one of the winning car owners. He took third place in the modified car category with his 1952 Ford F100 pick up truck. His first ever build, which included bodywork, interior, paint job, chassis swap and drive train conversion, hand built stainless steel exhaust and double flip front hood, took 12 years to complete. The Sun Festival event marked the first ever showing of Maksym’s handiwork. Other winners included: Stock • 1st: Stephan Orlitzky - Tsawwassen - 1978 Excaliber • 2nd: Bob Johnson -

Studio West Dance students rehearse a number from the school’s upcoming production of Disney’s Aladdin.

Aladdin lands in Ladner S

tudio West Dance will produce its second summer musical, Disney’s Aladdin, tomorrow and Sunday. Show times are 3 and 5 p.m. tomorrow and 4 and 5 p.m. on Sunday. After the success of last year’s production of Aristocats, two extra shows have been added to feature double casts. “We had so many talented kids and not enough parts so we decided we needed to add two shows and have two different groups of kids,” explains choreographer and director Jyla Davis. “This year’s show calls for way more special effects than last year’s because it’s filled with magic,” says musical director

and director Tracy Neff. “It’s only a 30minute production but it involves a genie in a bottle, two people flying around the world on a magic carpet and a cave of wonder — it is jam packed!” Another new addition to this year’s production is the help of local costume designer Julie White. “We try to keep the costumes and sets minimal but we both love Julie’s work and knew that she would bring the aesthetic of our production to a new level,” Neff says. Davis and Neff have been directing, choreographing, producing, performing, singing and acting nationally and internationally for over 20 years and both have a passion

Choral society open to new members

for creating performance opportunities for young Delta performers. “Tracy and I both had mentors and teachers in this community who worked hard to create experiences for us and we both want to pay it forward,” Davis explains. Studio West has become a force in the Delta community (voted #1 dance studio in the Delta Optimist 2014 Readers’ Choice Awards) and in the dance competition world. Neff continues to perform around the Lower Mainland while working with young singers at the Delta Community Music School and teaching drama at South Delta Secondary beginning this fall.

The Delta Choral Society is welcoming new members to it’s awardwinning pair of choirs, the Delta Community Choir and Tapestry. An audition for pitch and placement is required for the DCC and a full audition is required for Tapestry (accompanist provided). Rehearsals are Monday evenings: 7-8:30 p.m. for the DCC and 8:30-

10 p.m. for Tapestry. Extra sectional rehearsals are scheduled as needed. Dues are $80 per term. Terms run September to December and January to May. The Delta Choral Society has completed a very successful spring term that saw both choirs compete in New York City at the World Strides Heritage Music Festival.

With classic Disney songs such as, A Whole New World and Friend Like Me, and hilarious stand up comedy from a blue Genie, this show will add magic to your summer. Aladdin will take place at Delta Secondary in what has been coined the “guitar room.” It is a one-act kids show that runs approximately 30 minutes and is based on the 1992 Disney film. Tickets are $10 can be purchased at the door. The entrance to the show is on the southwest side of Delta Secondary School near the track. Performances take place Saturday, Aug. 16 (3 and 5 p.m.) and Sunday, Aug. 17 (4 and 5 p.m.). Both choirs came home with gold awards and lots of memories. If you are interested in auditioning for either group, come to the Benediction Lutheran Church, 55756th Ave., Tsawwassen, on Monday, Sept. 8 at 6:55 p.m. Everyone is welcome. Hawaii’s hidden dimension Islands offer up more than just surf and soft sand

BY

CHRIS MCBEATH

Optimist contributor

For many visitors, Hawaii’s balmy sunshine, rolling surf and soft sand is the total story but for the curious of heart, the islands’ unique and isolated position offers the inquisitive traveler much more. New Earth: Nowhere is this better experienced than on Hawaii, the Big Island. Here, tropical jungles edge up to vast volcanic landscapes like hardened molasses that breaks dramatically into the sea. Today, lava flows are still reshaping the coastline creating some of the earth’s oldest — and certainly its youngest — landmass. You only have to come across a section of asphalt highway, half swallowed up beneath the once-scorching lava, to realize this land is still cooking beneath your feet. Turning Surf into Land Science: Turning the lava

bedrock into a gigantic ocean science and technology park, the Natural Energy Laboratory of Hawaii Authority (NELHA) is at the forefront of renewable energy production, marine biotechnology, and aquaculture. Occupying 870 acres at Keahole Point, six pipeline systems draw surface and deep seawater from various depths for use by park occupants. With an intake 4,500 feet deep, one pipe is the deepest in the world and so offers extraordinary research and commercial opportunities. Public tours are available for the curious. Some of the more intriguing tenants include: • A sea horse farm. In the face of near extinction, this is the world’s only living and breeding gene bank of sea horses and sea-dragons — the primary source for aquariums and the commercial marine industry.

SCAN WITH TO REVEAL PHOTOS

Lava across Kalapana Highway.

• Farms producing ogo, edible sea vegetables as well as cosmeceutical and nutritional supplements. • Several sustainable aquaculture enterprises involving clams, lobsters, shrimp, reef building corals, abalone, and new strains of fish such as fast-growth and hardy kampachi, a hopedfor substitute for the everdiminishing ocean stocks of large-fish such as salmon and tuna. Without this kind of replacement intervention, it is anticipated that current

big fish stocks will collapse within 30 years. This park is a lab of discovery. Living Mythology: Hawaii’s topography is very much a part of Hawaiian mythology. Hiking over and through the lava fields blends mythology with geology. This is the domain of Pele, the powerful goddess of fire, lightening, wind, and volcanoes. It is wise to offer her a tipple of gin or her favourite food, the O’Helo berry, before

crossing her land lest you offend her intemperate nature. After all, this is the tempestuous Goddess who turned her lover, Kamapua’a, the ruler of forests, into a pig. And it is Pele who scorned rejections with a vengeance. One tale tells of how, when the handsome Ohia chose his woman, Lehua, over Pele, the Goddess killed them both in a fit of rage. Filled with remorse, however, she later turned Ohia into a tree and Lehua into a beautiful red flower, thus reuniting the lovers forever. To this day the Ohia-a-lehua tree is found throughout the islands and if ever you see the flower growing away from the tree, rain — the tears of separated lovers — is sure to follow. And as you walk, look too, for strands of Pele’s hair caught in the rocks and glistening in the sunlight — actually threads of silicone from the steam seep-

ing from the main crater. Surfing the Science of Space: The late astronomer Carl Sagan once said, “Somewhere, something incredible is waiting to be known.” And sitting atop Mauna Kea, a lofty 13,796 feet (4205m) above sea level, the W. M. Keck Observatory’s twin eightstorey tall, 10-meter telescopes seem to prove that every year. Through their multiangled, hexagonal reflective glasses, Pluto lost planetary status, black holes were discovered in the Milky Way, and observers came to realize the accelerating expansion of the Universe — research that earned the 2011 Nobel Prize in physics. In between working on their various art projects and also acting as docents for South Delta Artists Guild’s current Oil and Water exhibition at Gallery 1710, members in the Friday morning group took time out last Friday for a two-way celebration in their studio. The 95th birthday of long-time guild member Wynn Dennett was due the following day and that was all anyone needed to set up a wine and cheese, fresh fruit and birthday cake party for the popular, talented and very active artist, who continues to participate in the regular guild shows. The coincidental second reason for the celebration was to mark the 60th anniversary of the arrival in Canada, from England, of Noreen Fairweather, who sailed up the St. Lawrence on Aug. 8, 1954, marvelling at the wonderful scent of the forests wafting on the breeze. ADVICE FROM THE PROS QUESTION: I heard there is a new coin catalogue out do you have it yet? ANSWER:

Q:

I see a lot of sold signs around Ladner and Tsawwassen. How are you feeling the market activity so far this year? Has it picked up?

The new Charlton Paper Money catalogue was released this week. It covers every Canadian banknote ever issued from the Government of Canada. Beginning with the first notes issued in 1700s under French rule it goes up to current notes issued in 2014. For those of you that have a lot of bills and wonder why a 1986 $2.00 bill can range from face value up to $20,000.00, this is the book for you. Priced at $29.95 we will have it by the end of next week.

A: The market has most definitely picked up! YES! Things are much stronger

this year than this time last year. My team’s (Fraser Elliott Group) total volume for the first 5.5 months of last year was 54 +\- sales and this year for the same period we are already over 95 sales. (same period Jan-June 2014). My team sales volumes are up almost 75% from this time last year and although our team’s overall marketshare has definitely increased due to continued growth, the total number of sales in the market have increased considerably, proving a much stronger market this year versus last year. Overall detached MLS sales in Ladner for all agents combined is up 40% comparing detached sales between January 1st and June 1st 2013 to the same period in 2014. (This year). That same number is up 22% in Tsawwassen from 2013 to 2014. (122 total detached sales in Ladner this year (to-date) versus 87 last year for the same period and 123 detached sales this year in Tsawwassen versus 101 sales last year for the same period.)

Jim Richardson, owner Western Coin and Stamp

The attached market (condo’s and townhome’s) which was very slow last year has seen an increase of 57% overall in sales when comparing this year-to-date versus same period in 2013. It has been a wonderful spring and with this type of healthy sales volume in our market and all the factors that continue to positively affect our Ladner and Tsawwassen housing values, we predict a strong second half of 2014 for Ladner & Tsawwassen. Thinking of selling this year, get your home listed, the market is active!! Look forward to chatting with you!

QUESTION: I’m a Sandwich Generation parent ANSWER:

Are we better off Renovating or Re-Locating? That’s the Big Money question!

with too much on my plate. How could I benefit from your services?

ANSWER:

The Sandwich Generation refers to people aged 45-64, ‘sandwiched’ between caring for 2 generations at the same time…their own growing children and their aging Baby Boomer parents. Recent stats show this trend affects more than 55% of Canadian families, with at least one-third currently caring for a parent in their home.

With greater time demands from two sides, and less disposable income, the balancing of career, kids and caring can be a tough scenario. Good news is that there is expert help! Assistance with daily living tasks, like grocery shopping, household chores and organizing healthcare appts eases the burdens of time and resources. Consider the affordability of having support coming in 2hr/day, 5x/week at approximately less than half the cost of facility living. At HoneyDo Lifestyle Assistant we understand that successful Aging in Place means less stress on families, more multi-generational connection, and allows our elders to live productive, healthy, independent lives in their community.

For obvious reasons your realtor will make a good case to simply re-locate (ah, but not so simple!) Conversely, a good Renovator can take that existing house and make it your Dream Home! In my opinion there are 3 main factors to consider: 1. Do we enjoy living in our present location, as it is a lot of work and expense to re-locate. 2. Can we work with this existing house and bring our ideas to life here. 3. How long do we foresee ourselves in this location. All very important considerations indeed! First is going to be personal for each family and I just take into consideration the upheaval involved to re-locate. Second is where consultation with a professional Renovator can help you in the re-configuration or addition to your existing layout. Third and most important with regards to your investment in any renovation is your commitment to location. If you have a short 1-3 year plan in mind then cosmetics and immediate repairs only or you risk losing most of your investment. If you foresee a 5-10 year stay then I feel you are safe in the 50K to 150K investment into your property upgrades as you are now renovating to increase the value in your home plus adding livability and quality to your lifestyle! Beyond that time frame it’s only about wants vs. needs and the total affordability of your Dream Project! MRP Renovations is here to solve all your renovatingWant’s and Need’s! FROM THE PROS Question; My car has been in an accident. Can I get a quote for the repair cost before repairs are started? Answer; The short answer is sometimes. If the damage is all visible and either no parts, or clearly visible parts are needed then it is possible to write a firm quote that will include everything. An example of this would be a dent in the rear quarter with a broken taillight housing. These simple incidents are the type that are most often paid outside of insurance. If the damage is more extensive then it is possible to provide a range of where the final price may be but until the vehicle has been disassembled as needed for inspection of hidden damage and parts required the actual final price cannot be known.

Peter Sziklai owner

Tsawwassen Collision

Insurance companies deal with this every day and understand that the final cost cannot be determined until this full inspection has been done. These more complex accidents are most often paid for through insurance and with the insurance company and the quality collision shop knowing the correct procedures the car will be fixed correctly at the correct final price.

Turning up the Heat at Nationals Girls rep fastpitch program wins two Canadian titles and have both teams play gold at U18 event Delta’s elite girls fastpitch organization has turned up the Heat in a big way this summer. The rep “A” program, that is co-hosted by the North Delta and South Delta fastpitch associations, has captured a pair of national championships and amazingly had two teams in the U18 title game. The U18 Canadian Championships in Saskatoon last weekend featured 22 entries from eight different provinces. The last two clubs standing were the ’96 and ’97 Delta Heat. The ’96 Heat jumped out to a 3-0 lead and held off their younger counterparts for an entertaining 7-5 victory to cap a perfect run at the championships. Pitcher Marley Pitcher was awarded the playoff MVP. Outfielder Taylor Gillis was named to the all-star team. The ’97 squad also walked away with plenty of hardware, including pitcher Desirae Villanueva earning the

MVP award for preliminary play. She had an era of 0.30 and also dominated at the plate with .455 batting average. Catcher Maria Palmegiana and outfielder Sierra Sherritt were named tournament all-stars. Hits by Kennedy Bailey and Gillis gave the ’96s the early lead in the final. The 97s countered in the top of the fourth with its first run and pulled within one (5-4) in the fifth. The ’96s got a key tworun triple from Siara Couper, then held off the 97s in the seventh with the tying runs aboard. The ’96s’ path the the final included an impressive 9-0 mercyrule romp of provincial champion and arch rival White Rock Renegades. Parker was superb in the pitching circle, allowing just two hits, while her teammates lashed out 13. A five-run second inning sparked the big win. Holly Speers had a key two-run double and later added a triple to finish

with four RBIs. Outfielder Paige Harbord had three hits. The ’97s stayed perfect with a hard-fought 4-3 extra inning win over the Brampton Blazers. That set the stage for the first clash between the Delta teams with the 96s earning a spot in the championship game with an 8-1 semi-final win. The offence included a lead-off home run in the second inning by catcher Lexie Brenneis. It was the start off a five run outburst. The ’97s got to the final with a 4-2 win over the Renegades. Villanueva allowed just three hits while Lauren Watson went 4-for4 at the plate. Palmegiana added three hits. Coached by Gord Collings and assistants Bob Houtman and Paige Collings, the ’96 Heat roster also featured Carolyn Thoveson, Sammy Pearson, Kennedy Bailey, Kaitlin Fraser, Taylor Lundrigan, Montana Turnovitski, Alex Cook

and Meghan Malowich. The ’97 squad also includes: Laura Baldry, Jordan BrittenYoung, Kendro Ho, Tia Lore, Michaela Moore, Raelyn Radovich, Paige Taylor, Janey Thomas, Daniella Vilio and Taylor Woodward. The team is coached by Steve Couper with assistants Ken Ho and Katelyn Jackson. Meanwhile, at Softball City in South Surrey, the 2001 Delta Heat captured the U14 national title — capping an eight game unbeaten run with an 8-1 win over Ontario’s Palmerston Marlins in the final. The team includes: Rachel Schultz, Aymee Godmaire, Amy de Ste Croix, Dannica Desgroseilliers, Megan Hendrickson, Hanna Hansen, Jenaya Basi, Jessie Weststrate, Stephanie Schina, Olivia Malesku and Mackenzie Last. The girls are coached by Scott Hendrickson, Neil Malesku, Doug Harris and Katie Harris.

On the southeast corner of 60th Avenue and 64th Street in Delta, is the picturesque location of Imperial Stables. The Gadban’s bought the facility in the spring of 2009 to fulfill a life long desire to live on a farm. They had a vision to create a friendly atmosphere within a superb training facility while keeping the very horse-accommodating layout to the property. And so Imperial Stables was established and is now emerging in this wonderful community as a leading hunter, jumper and equitation facility; with an emphasis on high standards of horse care.

Stevens’ NLL career heading home as Stealth trade for Ladner sniper Dane Stevens is coming home for the next chapter of his pro lacrosse career. The 26-year-old Ladner native and former Delta Junior “A” Islanders standout was acquired by the National Lacrosse League’s Vancouver Stealth Wednesday as part of a multi-player deal with the Minnesota Swarm. Vancouver also picked-up transition player Tyler Haas for defenceman Mike Grimes and a third round draft pick. Stevens produced 27 points, including 11 goals, last season in Minnesota. He had previously spent the 2010 and 2011 campaigns with the Edmonton Rush. He is currently playing in the Western

Lacrosse Association with the Burnaby Lakers. Stevens finished tied for fifth in WLA scoring with 56 points in 18 games. He has added 15 more in four playoff games as the Lakers battle the Maple Ridge Burrards in the semi-finals. “We have watched Dane for a number of years and feel he brings a different dynamic to our offense. He is a guy who has a very high lacrosse IQ who can not only score goals, but distribute the ball very well. “We are looking for Dane to contribute in a big way in the upcoming season,” said Stealth president and general manager Doug Locker.
