Discovery hits close to home

Dalton excited to hear one of Franklin’s ships found in Arctic BY

JESSICA KERR

jkerr@delta-optimist.com

The discovery this week of a ship lost in the 1800s is being hailed as an incredible achievement by a local author On Tuesday, Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced the discovery of one of the ships belonging to the ill-fated Franklin Expedition. Royal Navy captain Sir John Franklin’s expedition to find the Northwest Passage, which included two large ships — HMS Erebus and HMS Terror

— and 130 men, set sail from England in 1845 bound for the Arctic. The vessels were last seen off the west coast of Greenland when they met two whaling ships before continuing west into the ice of Lancaster Sound. They were never seen again. “Expeditions have been looking for those ships since 1846, 1847 so it’s an incredible achievement,” said local author and former expedition organizer Anthony Dalton, who lives in Tsawwassen. Dalton, who has written 14

non-fiction books, five related to the Artic and one specifically about Sir John Franklin and the ill-fated mission, said he let out a yelp of excitement when he heard Tuesday’s announcement. “It’s great for Canadian history,” he said. “It’s great for British history.” See DISCOVERY page 3 FILE PHOTO

The tone was clearly less hostile but concern and skepticism were still conveyed over the latest proposal for a multi-family development in Ladner Village. Roughly 80 people attended a public information meeting at the Ladner Community Centre Wednesday evening to learn more about a revised plan for a site at the corner of 47A Avenue and 48B Street. The original proposal called for a five-storey condo building, which drew a heated response from the public at a meeting in July. The mood was less intense this week when the new plan was discussed. The scaled-back proposal is for 23 three-storey townhouses. According to Delta’s planning department, the proposed density and height are consistent with the Ladner Area Plan. The Skov family, who were present at both meetings, consolidated four properties at the site in an effort to construct a residential complex that is being called Village Walk. Architect Peter Dandyk explained the complete redesign to the audience. “We think the new scale and design of the building is contextually appropriate. We’ve taken on a little bit more of an historical character to try and fit better

ing what would be an attractive project. He added the area plan identifies logical places where density could be increased and that the site is one of them. He also said the previous higher density condo plan would have had mostly seniors, but the new townhouse plan will likely be occupied mostly by families, which in itself is fine because “this type of development will rejuvenate the community and bring a lot of young blood into it.” Rolly Skov was planning to live in one of the condo units in the original proposal, but due to mobility challenges he won’t reside in the proposed townhouse complex. One PHOTO BY SANDOR GYARMATI audience member said Ladner resident Brian Webb was told at a public meeting Wednesday evening that the height of a proposed townhouse development in the village would be in compliance with the Official Community Plan she actually favours condos over townhomes and Ladner Area Plan. due to better affordabilwith the Ladner town centre build to such a height, sayto meet the bylaw requireity as well as providing and I think it’s even more ing it’s still out of character ments, Dandyk said elimihousing for seniors with responsive than the other with the community. DISCOVERY from page 1 He said what actually happened to the two ships has remained a mystery over the years. “It was obviously trapped in ice ... we know that from notes left behind,” Dalton said.

“It will be wonderful once they actually get on those ships.” The Victoria Strait Expedition, using a remotely operated underwater vehicle recently acquired by Parks Canada, found the

ship largely intact. While there is enough evidence to confirm it is one of Franklin’s missing ships, there is not yet enough information to identify if it is Erebus or Terror. “Our government has been deeply committed to finding HMS Erebus and HMS Terror, which were

Canada’s only undiscovered national historical site. Since 2008, there have been six major Parks Canadaled searches for the lost Franklin Expedition ships, painstakingly covering many hundreds of square kilometres of the Arctic seabed,” Harper said. The discovery, however,

is just the beginning. “Finding the first vessel will no doubt provide the momentum — or wind in our sails — necessary to locate its sister ship and find out even more about what happened to the Franklin Expedition’s crew,” the prime minister said this week.

The group fighting a plan to erect radio towers in Point Roberts is asking concerned residents to attend a town hall meeting next week to learn more about what’s been happening and how they can help. The meeting will have several guest speakers provide the latest information on the application by BBC Broadcasting Inc. to construct five 45-metre (150-foot) steel towers on an undeveloped lot on McKenzie Way just south of the border. The towers would transmit South Asian radio station KRPI, AM 1550, to a Lower Mainland audience. The meeting, organized by the Cross Border Coalition to Stop the Radio Towers, will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 17 at 7 p.m. at Tsawwassen United Church, 693-53rd St. Many residents in Tsawwassen and Point Roberts have been fighting the proposal due to concerns over blanketing interference that would cause havoc with household electronic devices. The station currently broadcasts using antenna in Ferndale, Wash.,

Commission in the U.S. has granted a construction permit but a conditional use permit is still required from Whatcom County, which

will hold a public hearing on the issue late next month. Next week’s town hall meeting will discuss the likely day for public comments at the hearing and how to coordinate speakers from both sides of the border to best advance their case. The hearing is scheduled to start Oct. 27 and could last up to five days. Opponents are gathering expert witnesses and have legal representation, but are looking to raise another $35,000 to fund their case. Dozens of local merchants have helped the cause by placing donation jars in their businesses as well as petition sheets that will be forwarded to the House of Commons. Merchants have also donated many gift cards and goods that will be available for purchase at next Wednesday’s meeting. The coalition is also holding a benefit concert hosted by the Cottages at Seabright Farms in Point Roberts. The event, which will feature live music, a barbecue and silent auction, will take place Sunday, Sept. 21 from 1 to 5 p.m. For more information, check notowers.webs.com.

Dog walker makes first court appearance to face several animal cruelty charges BY

JESSICA KERR

jkerr@delta-optimist.com

The woman facing animal cruelty charges in the deaths of six Ladner dogs, including her own, made her first court appearance Tuesday afternoon. Dog walker Emma Paulsen is facing several charges under both the Criminal Code and the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, including

killing or injuring an animal, causing unnecessary pain or suffering of an animal, failing to provide adequate care to dogs, and mischief. The Crown also, for the first time, invoked a new section of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, which was enacted in 2012, that makes it an offence to fail to provide adequate care to an animal. In an appearance in

Surrey Provincial Court Tuesday afternoon, Paulsen had her case adjourned until Oct. 17. Initially reported stolen from her truck while parked at a Langley park in May, it later came out that the canines — Buddy, a Boston terrier, Mia, a pit bull, Oscar, a Rottweilerhusky mix, Molly, a blue heeler-shepherd cross, Teemo, a Bouvier poodle cross, and Salty, the dog

walker’s own border collie — died after allegedly being left in Paulsen’s vehicle on a hot day. The dogs were later recovered from an Abbotsford ditch. If convicted, the Ladner woman could face a maximum fine of $75,000, up to five years in jail and a ban on owning or having custody of animals for a period of time determined by the judge.

A group of youths was reported to have purchased eggs from a local business, however no description was obtained. Police searched the nearby area but did not locate the group. The complainant advised that similar incidents have occurred in the past. Video surveillance from the business will be obtained. • Sept. 4, 3:09 p.m., 5000-block of 47A Avenue: Complainant reported that her daughter’s townhouse had been broken into during the past two days. There were no signs of forcible entry and an area patrol proved negative. Electronics and personal identification were stolen. • Sept. 5, 7:54 a.m., 4600-block of 52A Street: Complainant reported that overnight her unlocked vehicle had been rummaged through while parked at her residence. Police attended and discovered that a number of unlocked vehicles

in the area had also been entered and gone through. Nothing of value stolen, but in two instances insurance papers were moved from the glove box. No witnesses or suspects. Tsawwassen • Sept. 1, 1:32 a.m., 700-block of 53rd Street: Complainant called to advise that two males had ripped down a construction fence. He was unable to provide any further description of the suspects. Police attended and observed that four sections of the fence had been pushed over. No suspects found. Police returned the sections to their original position. • Sept. 1, 2:05 a.m., 1100-block of 54A Street: Police discovered that a theft had occurred from a truck parked in an underground parking garage. The passenger side door lock was damaged and the interior of the vehicle had been rummaged through. The doors to the rear toolbox were open and first aid kit removed. The owner was contacted and subsequently advised police that his passport and vehicle registration papers had also been stolen.

No witnesses. • Sept. 3, 10:04 a.m., 700-block of Tsawwassen Beach Road: Complainant called to report a theft from an auto on his property overnight. Video surveillance shows a male suspect and a female suspect entering the driveway. The male entered the unlocked vehicle and stole cash. No damage. • Sept. 4, 1:05 p.m., 5600-block of 10th Avenue: Complainant reported that two unidentified men were knocking on her front door attempting to get her children to open it. They subsequently left in a small pickup truck after taking an exhaust manifold off the complainant’s property. Police located the vehicle on Highway 17 filled with what appeared to be junk metal and discarded furniture. Both suspects were arrested for theft. Investigators determined the suspects were attempting to locate an adult to inquire about the manifold they believed was scrap. The suspects have no history of theft or break and enter. Police escorted the suspects back where they returned the manifold and apologized to the homeowner.

Delta police deputy Chief Lyle Beaudoin was in Ottawa earlier this week to receive one of the highest honours awarded to police officers. Beaudoin was honoured with the Order of Merit of the Police Forces at Rideau Hall. Governor General David Johnston presented the deputy chief with his award on Tuesday. “It is an honour for one of our members to be recognized nationally with this award and it speaks to deputy Chief Beaudoin’s commitment to public safety and the community of Delta,” said Chief Jim Cessford. “Deputy Chief Beaudoin continues to serve Delta with the same energy and enthusiasm as when he first started with the department.” Beaudoin joined the department in 1978 as a 19-year-old reserve before becoming a sworn member a year later. MURPHY’S LAW It looks like she’s willing to settle for being No. 2. Mayor Lois Jackson’s announcement Monday that she would seek a sixth term this November didn’t come as much of a surprise to anyone who keeps tabs on municipal hall. Although she was reluctant to confirm it any earlier than she did, all signs, including campaign fundraising having already begun in earnest, pointed to yet another re-election bid. The bigger question was how much longer the veteran politician, who has been on Delta council almost continuously since the early 1970s, would continue to occupy the mayor’s chair. She answered that one on Monday as well by declaring the upcoming term, provided she’s re-elected, will be her last. Her history of fending off challengers, coupled with a dearth of opponents this time around, suggests there’s no reason to think voters won’t return her two months from now. If that’s the case, she’ll continue her climb up Delta’s record book. During the current term, Jackson passed William Henry Ladner to move into third spot on the list of longesttenured Delta mayors. Ladner, who was Delta’s first reeve back in 1880, served on six different occasions for a total of 14 years. When Jackson completes this term, she will have served for 15 years, which will equal the run of John Kirkland, who presided over Delta in the 1940s and ‘50s. Should she get re-elected and finish out the next term, which will be a fouryear one, it would bring her time in the municipality’s top job to 19 years, which would put her in second place by herself, but still well short of the record held by Alex Paterson. Those who marvel, and for good reason, at Jackson’s longevity will surely be in awe of Paterson, who was Delta’s reeve (the English term was used until 1969 when it was replaced by mayor) for a whopping 27 years. He was at the helm from 1914 to 1944, with the exception of a three-year stretch in the early ‘20s. Jackson, who has already made history by becoming the first woman elected to Delta council in 1972, will have to settle for second spot on the mayor’s list, assuming, of course, she doesn’t re-consider the decision about it being her final term and seeks a mandate beyond 2018. That seems unlikely at this point, but if there were ever going to be a western version of Hazel McCallion, the 90-something mayor who has ruled Mississauga for the better part of four decades, Jackson would have to be a leading candidate.

Settlement is inevitable, so let’s not waste more time DOUG HUSBAND

COMMUNITY COMMENT The labour strife between the provincial government and public school teachers is like no other. This impasse affects thousands of teachers, hundreds of thousands of students awaiting educational opportunity already paid for, and multitudes of apprehensive and dissatisfied parents. No one side will win this stalemate. Both sides think they’re right and they’re in it for the long haul. The Ministry of Education must believe a lengthy strike will have such long-term effect on the BCTF membership to resolve future contract issues at the bargaining table, rather than again risk loss of employment and financial hardship. The BCTF naively thinks it has the will of the voters along with a united membership. This is not a typical union/

employer dispute of blocked access to company property and hostile employees with placards disrupting business. Why then do professionals engage in such lame and inappropriate practices? Rhetorically speaking, why do teachers in public schools require strike action and denial of services during contract negotiations? Why do other unions and professionals successfully resolve their contract issues? The underlying answer is the high cost of delivering a service, which has been determined to be an “essential” service. Those at the bargaining table should resign if they’re incompetent (which I don’t believe to be the case) or their mandate as instructed is unachievable (which I believe to be true). We are told the B.C. government is holding out for a “negotiated contract.” Thirty years of history says the likelihood of that happening is extremely remote. History also tells us he/she with the most money usually wins the financial contest. The frustrating point of this impasse is that settlement is inevitable. Several months have passed and both parties appear no closer

on any of the important issues. Vince Ready at one point stopped both sides from airing their propaganda through the press. Both sides are back to that tactic and Ready has booked out of the dispute. Simple folk like myself say enough is enough. The provincial government has all the tools to end the strike/lockout. The Labour Relations Board can order a twoweek cooling off period and bring the teachers back to the classroom as an essential service and then impose a settlement through binding or non-binding arbitration, with the latter of significant value to both sides. It saddens me to see professionals awkwardly standing around wearing silly placards and politicians lamely talking about “negotiated peace” when it simply will not happen. Or will not happen soon enough without irreparable damage to this year’s education system. Choices have to be made and decisive action taken. Both sides need this dispute resolved and teachers really want to practice their craft and educate our children. Anything less is unacceptable. And a good night to you, Vicki, Morgan and Haley.

September 12, 2014 The Delta Optimist A9 Letters to the Editor

Funding needed to fight proposed radio towers Editor: In just over six weeks the Whatcom County hearing on KRPI’s proposed fivetower antenna array in Point Roberts will take place in Bellingham. The Cross-Border Coalition to Fight the Towers has hired the best lawyers in the county to represent our communities and stop this project. The proposed radio towers will not benefit our

community in any way, shape or form. Zero benefits, but lots of negatives. I knew AM antennas were the “bad boys” of radio antennas but even after reading engineering reports extensively for the past 10 months, I wasn’t catching on to the main problem. I was picturing the 50,000 watts of electromagnetic radiation (EMR) coming from the tops of antennas with somehow bits

of it filtering downward and invading our homes, businesses and our electronics with harmful “blanketing interference.” What I didn’t realize is that with AM antennas, the signal comes out of the entire height of the antenna. On top of that, AM radio waves love to travel along the ground as they move outwards, going through houses, trees, people, our phones (landlines, portable

and cell), computers, TVs, all of our speakers, MP3 players and more. KRPI says they will “remediate” problems, but all of the items listed above are specifically excluded by the FCC and will not be serviced by KRPI. That’s because they can’t be fixed. Now it is clear why property values go down in communities near AM antennas. Radio antennas are meant to be sited on

farmland, or on mountains, far away from homes and people. We must raise another $25,000 in the next six weeks so we can finance the defence of our homes and families. We have an excellent case that we believe our legal team will win. Credentialed experts in engineering, site lines and birds are also necessary. Please help us beat KRPI and donate today by send-

ing a cheque to PRTA/FTT, 239-55th St., Delta, B.C., V4M 3J4, or go to http:// notowers.webs.com to use a credit card or PayPal. Please step up and be generous. Every little bit counts but if you have been blessed with more, please donate more. How dumb would it be to get stuck with these harmful antennas forever when we have a winning case? Armene Belless

Graduating students losing out with prolonged strike

Editor: There has been a lot of discussion regarding the need for proper funding for class size and composition, English Language and special needs students in the ongoing teachers’ strike. However, I would also like to address the needs of academic students who are also losing out because this Liberal government is refusing to negotiate in good faith, has ignored two court rulings, has turned down arbitration and has brought no creative ideas to the table to help mediate a solution to this serious crisis in public education. How can this government blindly ignore the needs of our academic Grade 12 students? These students will be competing for seats at universities across Canada, the U.S. and possibly internationally and yet these students will have missed out on important “end of the year” Grade 11 curriculum and will now be weeks behind with difficult Grade

12 coursework. These students of today will be our future doctors, health care workers, engineers, computer techies, teachers and business professionals. For the government to say it doesn’t have money to support public education is far from the truth. Perhaps to meet a balanced budget, the Liberals are now stealing from our children’s public education and are robbing our children of the ability to compete against their peers academically in other parts of Canada and the world. Would someone please explain to me how the Liberal government can still claim “Families First” with the highest child poverty rate, children attending SDSS with massive power lines running overhead and now no school for weeks for all public school children in B.C.? Union leader should set example Editor: Why is B.C. Teachers’ Federation president Jim Iker urging teachers, who don’t get paid while on strike, to continue job action? It’s easy for Iker to do so since he most likely is getting paid his six-figure salary regardless.

Unions are supposed to stand for fairness and equality, so Iker should share his high pay with striking teachers and join them on the picket line. I guess when it comes to his own pocket, this union preaching does not apply. Othmar Brunner

Aktiv Coast Healthcare is hosting an open house tomorrow where the public can meet health professionals (from left) Susan Rodgers, Dr. Tyler Linn, Robert Kjemhus and Sarah Johnson. A recently opened clinic is bringing a new approach to health and wellness to South Delta. Aktiv Coast Healthcare is a multi-disciplinary health clinic that has an integrated team of health care professionals committed to improving clients’ overall health, function and wellbeing. “What we’re really looking to do is improve people’s overall health,” says chiropractor Dr. Tyler Linn, who opened the Tsawwassen clinic in July along with his wife, Sarah Johnson, a clinical counselor. Susan Rodgers, a registered holistic nutritionist, and kinesiologist Robert Kjemhus round out the current team. Linn said he is also looking to add a massage therapist and physiotherapist to the clinic this fall. The range of services offered includes manual therapy and chiropractic care, rehabilitation, custom orthotics, prehabilitation, functional movement assessments, kinesiology services, clinical counseling and nutritional coaching. First-time clients will go through a screening process to determine which team

member would be the best one with which to start. For example, Linn said, he might start by addressing a specific injury and then prescribe exercises, which Kjemhus will then demonstrate the proper form. Through his prehabilitation program, Kjemhus can prescribe specific movements and exercises to help correct muscle and joint imbalances to improve strength and mobility. Johnson, a registered social worker and clinical counselor, specializes in helping clients deal with life stress, self-esteem, depression and anxiety. She uses evidence-based therapeutic approaches, such as cognitive behavioural therapy, solution-focused therapy, mindfulness therapy and supportive counseling, as well as situation-specific education and life skill development, such as assertive communication and healthy boundary setting. On the nutrition side of things, Rodgers believes in a more whole food approach, rather than recommending supplements, and offers a nutritional coaching package. Aktiv Coast Healthcare is hosting an open house tomorrow from noon to 4

Step out in faith Gail stopped by the office this morning to say hello and to catch up with what’s happening in the parish. Before you know it, she had her “tablet” out and was showing pictures of her two young grandchildren swinging from the monkey bars and swooshing down a park slide. It seems easy for me to see the presence of God in these shining bright faces. I rejoice in the simple ways in which love is displayed — just playing on the teeter-totter together. The more difficult expression of God’s compassion and love comes from trying to seek God’s presence in the midst of anxiety and anger. The other day we were reading from Exodus the story of Moses and the people of Israel running away

from their slave captors in Egypt. Just as they think they can see a clear path ahead, they run into the shore of a great sea. They are in trouble, but God is with them. “Raise your hand,” God tells Moses, “and the sea will part and you will walk through on dry land.” And that’s what he did. The people were free from their enemy. There were often new enemies along their path, but they went together following God’s lead. “Whenever two or three are gathered,” Jesus said, “I will be with you.” God promises to be with us on our life’s journey too. Whether we experience the joy of loving family, or times of anxiety and stress, just raise your hand to God and step out in faith.

Entertain the kids at Delta Museum The Delta Museum is offering a number of ways to entertain the kids over the coming weeks: Hands On History During the morning of this popular hands-on history program, the children will travel back in time to experience what life was like at the turn of the last century by making their own butter, using a washboard and laundry mangle, and experiencing a pioneer classroom. The afternoon program will start with a walking tour of Ladner Village where children will learn about life in early Ladner and how the community has changed. Back at the museum, there will be a chance to build a giant map, learn Morse code and use a telegraph, and explore museum exhibits. Registration is required. Program is available Tuesday and Thursday from 10 to 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 to 2 p.m. Cost is $15 for half-day program or $25 for full day. Program is for ages six and up. Mystery in the Museum: The Case of the Stolen Jewellery It is the spring of 1910 and the community of Ladner’s Landing is shocked to hear that

Mrs. Roberts’ fine emerald necklace has been stolen. Jack Smith, a farmhand of the Roberts, is promptly arrested for the crime. However, as he waits at the Ladner jail to be transferred to New Westminster for his trial, Smith insists he is innocent. As lead detective of the investigation, you will have to figure out who really did it. Was it the cook? The maid? Hidden within the exhibits are clues that will help you unravel the mystery. The drop-in program is available Tuesday to Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Cost is $5 per mystery solving kit or free if combined with Museum Explorations. Museum Explorations Tour the museum exhibits and discover answers to a fun scavenger hunt. Discover new artifacts and learn about what life was like in the past. This drop-in program is available Tuesday to Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Cost is $5 per scavenger kit or free if combined with Mystery in the Museum. The museum is housed in a 1912 Tudor-style building in the heart of Ladner Village at 4858 Delta St. For more information, visit www.deltamuseum.ca or call 604-946-9322.

Local artist Jacqueline Dunn is on the other side of the world this week for a solo show in Tianjin, China. Dunn has always loved to paint, and after retiring from her teaching career two years ago, kicked her painting into high gear. “It’s non stop,” she says. “I don’t even breath. I paint one every three days.” Dunn taught at various schools

in Delta for 35 years, including the last 20 as an art teacher at Sands Secondary in North Delta. “I’ve always been a crazy, impassioned artist,” she says with a laugh. After retiring, she joined the South Delta Artists Guild and began showing some of her works around town. “It’s been a great, great thing for me,” she says about joining the guild. Her passion for painting was taken to the next level earlier this

year when a Chinese art dealer approached her. Dunn says she thought the man and his wife were just interested in buying some of her paintings. However, the man approached her about commissioning 40 paintings for a solo show in China. Dunn agreed and has been working on the paintings since March. While she typically paints mostly landscapes, forestscapes and gardens, the man asked her to incorporate images of Tianjin’s

buildings and bridges into some of the works. He has traveled to Tsawwassen several times since March to pick up the paintings. Dunn took the last few with her as she flew to China for the show, which will consist of 20 pieces showcasing the bridges and architecture of Tianjin and another 20 depicting the landscape and architecture of B.C. The project has forced Dunn, who works mostly in oil and acrylic, to expand her horizons.

She learned how to write some Chinese characters and incorporated more colour into her work. Dunn will spend eight days in China. In addition to the art show, the trip will include a visit to the ancient city of Xi-An, the Great Wall and a Chinese opera. Dunn says she hopes her story will encourage and inspire other artists who feel they are struggling. “Whatever it is that lights your soul on fire, you do it,” she says.

Annual South Delta Fox Run set for Sunday

Everything is in place for Sunday’s annual Terry Fox Run in South Delta. “Come out for a fun time,” says Bryan Kelly, a member of the Tsawwassen Rotary Club, which organizes the yearly event. Inspired by Terry Fox’s Marathon of Hope more than three decades ago, the Terry Fox Run takes place in communities across the country and around the world, raising millions for cancer research. Rotary Square at Tsawwassen Town

Centre Mall will once again serve as race headquarters, with registration beginning at 8:30 a.m. and the run starting at 10 a.m. There is no entry fee or minimum donation. The event includes both five-kilometre and 10-kilometre routes. Both courses are suitable for bikes, wheelchairs/strollers and rollerblades. Dogs are welcome on leash. Learning the three Rs on the road BY

t this stage of our lives, my husband Brent and I seem to be re-learning the three Rs. No, thank heavens it’s not reading, writing and arithmetic. With our roving home in tow, it’s all about RVing, recreating and relaxing. B.C. is home to over 1,500 campgrounds and during this trip we discover that the arid Okanagan is the perfect place to buff up on these basics. Dozens of sites dot the sagebrush hills and tranquil lakeshores and at Camping and RVing BC Coalition, we have a list of choices, photos and campground information at our fingertips, ranging from national and provincial parks to properties that are privately operated. “Let’s take a camping trip down memory lane,” Brent suggests, when panning the options. “Lake Okanagan Provincial Park was a family favourite when I was growing up.” After checking this link, it’s easy to see why. The 98-hectare oasis, rimmed by a swim-safe beach, is nestled into a grove of pine. It’s divided into two campgrounds — the South, where sites snuggle together on a lakeshore jetty, and the North, with lake-viewing spots that terrace the

hillside. Although there are no electrical or water hookups for our RV, there are hot showers and flush toilets. And the sites are spacious enough for our 28-foot fifth wheel. With a quick click to www.discovercamping. ca, our reservation is made and less than a month later we’re living our Lake Okanagan dream. “This is the life,” Brent says from a lazy lounger. Although seeking solace is certainly part of our learning goal, there’s an abundance of activity just steps from our RV door. Water-

skiers and windsurfers join swimmers and fishing folk. And there’s also plenty of activity for all of us landlovers. The two campgrounds are linked by an interpretive trail and along the way we check out regional flora and fauna. Columbia and Chocolate lily, flourishing next to wildflowers, are canopied by stately Ponderosa pine. Ground squirrels scurry beneath the prolific ground cover and meadowlarks, flickers and quail take flight above. And then there are the squigglers. As I read about

word again. Yes, watch out for the rattlers too. Bird lovers will be drawn to the six-kilometre Rotary Route when detouring to the Adams Bird Sanctuary. On our second day, we stroll through Summerland’s Ornamental Gardens, a horticulturist’s delight that’s located high above Highway 97. Spanning its bordering gorge is Trout Creek Railway Bridge, a trestle of metal that hangs 73 meters above the canyon floor. the harmless gopher snakes my feet go into river-dance mode. “Don’t fret,” Brent reassures. “They’re more afraid of you.” Even though I find this hard to believe, it doesn’t stop me from trekking on. The nearby city of Summerland offers a network of recreational pathways, some that also lure those on bicycle and horseback. You can step back in time while checking out Centennial Trail, a 4.5-kilometre loop that intersects with the original township and snakes through desert grasses. There’s that ‘S’

restored locomotive, shares the scenic sites of today with rail travel from a bygone era. It’s a 90-minute journey that appeases kids of all ages. There are plenty of other pastimes in this Okanagan playground that’ll bring out your inner child. Check out Peachland’s eight-sided museum, drift the river channel to Skaha Lake on a Coyote Cruise inner tube ride or boost your adrenaline with one of the exhilarating options at Penticton’s LocoLanding. We opt for the Summerland Golf and Country Club, an 18-hole beauty on Paradise Flats where manicured fairways are backed by Okanagan Valley and Trout Creek Canyon views as well as craggy outcroppings. I lose my first ball in a grove of pine that fringes the third tee, the second drowns in the pond on No. 5 and the third finds habitation beyond the dogleg on No. 18. I know I’ll never be a pro, but it doesn’t matter. And with this in mind I think of the past three glorious days of RVing, recreating and relaxing and add one more R to the list — rejuvenation. In a perfect world, Derek Chichak would have another three weeks before worrying about the regular season. The extra time would not only help with his final roster decisions but put the Delta Ice Hawks back in the comforts of the Ladner Leisure Centre. Instead, the Hawks opened the 2014-15 campaign in the building of their old rival, falling 53 to the North Vancouver Wolf Pack on Tuesday night. The team will play two more games at North Delta’s Sungod Arena before returning to a renovated and repaired Ladner Arena in time to host the Grandview Steelers on Sept. 23. “It would be ideal if we matched things up with the Western and B.C. Hockey Leagues,” said Chichak. “This league wants to start earlier to get in the number of games they want before the playoffs. It’s going to be a while before we have a really good idea what our (final) roster is going to look like. “I can’t even tell you how much we are looking forward to going (back to Ladner). We have had games all over the place and been practising in Richmond. We have basically felt like nomads.” The longtime Seafair Minor Hockey mentor took over the head coaching reigns last January

and guided the Hawks to a third place finish and a six game opening round playoff loss to North Vancouver. Two potential key returnees have focused on their post-secondary education — leading scorer Tanner Gattinger (University of Saskatchewan) and goalie Scott Lapp (UBC Okanagan). Chichak does have a couple of impact 20year-old veterans to lean on — blueliner David Rudin, who will serve as team captain, and Brent Chreptyk, who was named the league’s most improved player. He had a pair of goals in the season opener. Gritty two-way forwards Spencer Schoen, Evan Grannary and Mark Trotman have also returned, while Brandon Gaunt, Colby Rosner and Ryan Lisowsky will join Rudin at the back. The Hawks’ biggest shortcoming a year ago was a lack of consistent firepower. They had enjoyed an impressive run as one of the league’s powerhouse teams thanks to an explosive line-up that produced the league scoring champion for three straight seasons. During Delta’s championship season in 2012, its roster featured four of the league’s top nine scorers. Last year, Gattinger was the only Hawk to crack the top 20 and he was 16th. The club’s offence could receive a huge boost should Colton Kroeker and Colin Grannery eventually end up back home. The 17-year-olds led the Delta Hockey

Academy’s Elite team in scoring last season and Kroeker was outstanding as a call-up during last year’s playoffs, managing 10 points in four games. He is currently trying to make the jump to the Western Hockey League with the Regina Pats while Grannery, who had five goals in eight games as an AP last season, is hoping to earn a roster spot with Merritt of the B.C. Hockey League. A third potential impact rookie — defenceman Brandon Kennedy — is in the Lethbridge Hurricanes camp. In the meantime, Chichak will be counting on other rookies for the Hawks to challenge defending conference champion Richmond Sockeyes, including 17-year-old Delta Academy alumni Jake Fletcher (forward) and Greg Scott (defenceman). In net, the workload will fall on rookies Jacob Letrace and Jeremy Tamelin. Letrace looked terrific as a call-up last season, stopping 70 of 72 shots in a pair of wins. “We have left a couple of spots open for kids potentially returning back,” added Chichak. “My expectations have always been and there is no room for mediocrity. I’ve had a chance to sit down and talk to these kids and find out more about who they are as players and individuals which is a big part of the game. too. I really like the guys we got.” The Hawks travel to Abbotsford tonight before Richmond next Tuesday at Sungod (8 p.m.).
