Canada’s longest-serving police chief announces he’ll be retiring early next year BY
BY
JESSICA KERR
Delta police Chief Jim Cessford, the longest-serving police chief in the country, announced Wednesday he will be stepping down early next year. “This is a personal decision and after discussing it with my family, I feel it is a good time for me to move on,” Cessford said in a statement. “The department is in a good place right now and we have an outstanding team ready to take on the challenge of leading the organization into the future.” Cessford joined the Delta Police Department as chief in 1995. “Delta is one of the safest communities in Canada, thanks to support from the public, our police board, our municipal council and, most importantly, the men and women who come to work every day for the Delta police. It has been an honour to work with all of these people and our community over the years,” he said. Cessford began his policing career with the Edmonton Police Service more than 46 years ago, where he served for 27 years in various roles from hostage negotiator to homicide and major crimes investigator. “I am grateful for the unwavering dedication and leadership Chief Cessford has demonstrated throughout his career in Delta,” said Mayor Lois Jackson, who is also chair of the police board. “Jim has served our community and this country with exemplary leadership, for which he has received national recognition and made a lasting impact.” Cessford has received a num-

Delta police Chief Jim Cessford has enjoyed a distinguished career, including receiving the Order of Merit for Police Services in 2010 from then-governor general Michaëlle Jean. ber of awards and honours over the years. He was the recipient of the Governor General’s First Bar for 40 years of exemplary police service, was named Citizen of
the Year by the Delta Chamber of Commerce in 2009, was granted the Order of Merit for Police Services in 2010 and received the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal
in 2012 for his continued and outstanding service. Jackson said there will be big shoes to fill in finding Cessford’s successor.
Planning went into high gear earlier this week at school districts across the province with the announcement that B.C. teachers and the government had reached a tentative agreement. Teachers were set to vote on the agreement yesterday (results were not available by Optimist deadline). If approved by teachers, boards of education will complete ratification today and schools in Delta, and throughout the province, will open their doors on Monday for the first time since mid-June. The first day of school will be dedicated to registration and class organization, said Delta district superintendent Dianne Turner. Monday will be a shortened day and individual schools will communicate with parents regarding exact schedules for the day. “Our first full day of instruction would be Tuesday and then we would proceed with school as it normally unfolds the first week of school,” Turner stated in a letter sent out to parents this week. The usual two-week gradual entry for kindergarten students, which allows children to adjust to a new school environment, will be shortened to six days. Turner said the district would confirm the first day of school once the deal has been officially ratified. Updates will be emailed to parents as well as made available on the district’s website at web.deltasd.bc.ca.

CrossIron Mills general manager James Moller described the Alberta mall as a “hybrid” shopping centre. “It’s the best of retail in terms of bringing in those international, regional, local players,” he said. “They may be full price, they may be factory, they may be outlet, they may be discount.” Moller was the keynote luncheon speaker at a Delta Chamber of Commerce event Wednesday focusing on development updates at the Tsawwassen First Nation. Ivanhoe Cambridge, which developed CrossIron Mills, is the same company behind Tsawwassen Mills, a 1.2-million-square-foot mall on TFN land at the corner of Highway 17 and 52nd Street. It is scheduled to open in the spring of 2016. CrossIron Mills, which opened in 2009, is located about 1.5 kilometres north of the Calgary city limits and has 200 stores. “The mix is different. Currently in CrossIron Mills we have about 100

James Moller, general manager of CrossIron Mills, told a Delta Chamber of Commerce audience how the Calgary mall attracts shoppers from throughout the province. outlet stores of the 200 and they bring a different mix to the centre, a different feel to the centre,” said Moller. He said premium brands
like Coach (with both factory and men’s factory outlets), Adidas, Calvin Klein, Michael Kors and DKNY are just a few of the outlet
stores at the mall. The mall has different “neighbourhoods,” including fashion, sport, ranch and entertainment.
One of the anchor stores at CrossIron is Bass Pro Shops, which has been announced as one of the anchor stores at Tsawwassen Mills. The outdoors retailer really takes the “shopping experience to heart,” Moller said, noting the entire store, which has “museum quality” taxidermy on display, is hand painted with murals of wildlife and scenery. The outdoors retailer is a major draw for the shopping centre, Moller said, noting roughly 20 per cent of the traffic that comes to CrossIron Mills is because of Bass Pro Shops. The general manager said the mall draws customers from all over the province. “When we talk about who are customer is, it includes Edmonton, it includes Lethbridge, Medicine Hat, Banff. It’s basically from the Saskatchewan border, Montana border, B.C. border to north of Edmonton,” he said. Moller said CrossIron Mills is now attracting about nine million shoppers annually.
TFN development taking place on many fronts BY DAVE WILLIS & SANDOR GYARMATI
The landscape of South Delta is transforming as work progresses on major mall and housing developments at the Tsawwassen First Nation. The Delta Chamber of Commerce put on a halfday event Wednesday at the Delta Town & Country Inn with a range of speakers to provide an update on the various ventures involving the TFN.
“The business community in Delta, including our members, had asked for more information about the range of developments — residential, commercial, industrial, retail,” said chamber executive director Ian Tait. Excited to see the malls taking shape, TFN CAO Tom McCarthy said everything appears on schedule for the planned opening in the spring of 2016. Ivanhoe Cambridge (Tsawwassen Mills) and
Property Development Group (Tsawwassen Commons) are developing almost 1.8 million square feet of shopping and office space on 180 acres just off Highway 17 at 52nd Street. Meantime, work on housing subdivisions continues in another area of the First Nation. The first phase of the Tsawwassen Shores development by Aquilini Development is completely sold out, according to Christine Steffensen. “It’s mostly buyers from
the Lower Mainland and we’ve had a lot of people from Tsawwassen, but also Richmond, South Surrey and Burnaby,” she said. The TFN land use plan approved by members has over 2,200 homes to be built over the decade with Tsawwassen Shores comprising 850 of those units. The first phase, which includes 42 single-family homes, will be followed by a second phase of 29 singlefamily homes. Townhomes and condos will follow in

subsequent phases. Those buying units at the First Nation are buying 99-year pre-paid leases with no lease review or renewals required until terms have expired. Steffensen said the location, but mostly the price point, have been very attractive to buyers with the new single-family homes in the first phase starting at $499,900 with no GST. McCarthy said the first residents will move in within the next few weeks.

Officer not at the wheel of that unmarked car
The purpose of the Crime Beat is to educate and inform the public about some of the property crime trends occurring in South Delta and other files of interest. If you see anything occurring that you believe to be suspicious, call 911 for in-progress crimes and emergencies or 604-9464411 for other assistance. The following are some of the calls the Delta police responded to in the previous week: Tsawwassen • Sept. 9, 12th Avenue and 56th Street: Complainant called police to report that $120 had been stolen from a local business after an unidentified male entered the premises and asked to examine the $20 dollar bills from the cash register. The male explained that if he found a bill with “SS” in the serial number, he would win a competition. Six $20 bills were found to be missing at the end of the complainant’s shift. Surveillance footage was checked and found the man had taken the money during the “check.” A canvass of other businesses in the area was negative for witnesses or other complaints. Surveillance footage of incident was seized and images kept for identification. • Sept. 10, 56th Street and 12th Avenue: Complainant reported that a male and female in a darkcoloured Dodge pickup had stolen a length of garden hose and other items from
a business. Police stopped a truck matching that description in Ladner and observed a green hose in the rear truck bed, which the suspects advised they took thinking it was garbage. Police observed drug paraphernalia in plain view in the vehicle and on searching the vehicle found a prohibited stun gun and a quantity of methamphetamine. • Sept. 11, 10:30 p.m., ferry terminal: Complainant reported that his black leather duffel bag was stolen from the luggage area of the terminal by an unknown man who left in a taxi. Surveillance revealed the suspect to be a Caucasian man in his 20s. The suspect paid cash for the ferry ticket and taxi. Police followed up with the taxi driver and learned the male had been dropped off at a SkyTrain station. Surveillance footage seized. • Sept. 12, 2:06 a.m., 5100-block of Wilson Drive: Complainant reported that his vehicle had been keyed while parked in front of his residence. Complainant advised the damage was to the driver’s side rear panel. No suspects and nothing suspicious seen or heard. Reported for information and insurance purposes. Ladner • Sept. 10, 8:58 a.m., 7200-block of Hume Avenue: Complainant
reported approximately 800 litres of diesel were siphoned from his tractortrailer sometime overnight. No witness and no video surveillance. Complainant was provided with file number. • Sept. 11, 55th Street and 45th Avenue: Police were flagged down by a complainant who stated someone had broken into her vehicle sometime overnight. The vehicle was apparently left unlocked and several personal electronics and other items were stolen. Canvass for witnesses/surveillance was negative. • Sept. 13, 33A Avenue and 41B Street: While on regular patrol, police observed what appeared to be a fully-equipped unmarked police vehicle being driven by a person in plain clothes. Not recognizing the driver or the vehicle as being from the Delta Police Department, a vehicle stop was conducted. The vehicle, a black Ford Crown Victoria, was fully equipped with front/rear strobe lights and a laptop with a stand. The driver had also placed a yellow reflective vest in the rear window. The driver was advised of the potential repercussions and dangers of impersonating a police officer, and was required to remove all of the equipment and place it in the trunk. The driver told police he liked that the equipment caused other drivers to slow down around him.

Coalition gearing up for radio towers hearing
WORLD
Fundraising continues in earnest as date draws near BY

The coalition opposing the radio towers proposed for Point Roberts rallied the troops in Tsawwassen this week at a town hall meeting as the date for the Whatcom County hearing approaches. With just over a month until the hearing that will decide the fate of the project, the push is on to raise both awareness and money. The Cross Border Coalition to Stop the Radio Towers, which is made up of residents on both sides of the border, has already raised $75,000, most of which has been spent. It is looking to raise another $80,000, much of it to be spent on expert witnesses. At the meeting Wednesday night, the group announced its Push to Win $500 Challenge in the hopes of garnering donations. The coalition is challenging 150 businesses, organizations, individuals or families to donate $500 each. “We just simply cannot allow this to happen,” said coalition member Jennifer Urquhart, a Point Roberts resident. The group is fighting BBC Broadcasting Inc.’s proposal to build five 45-metre (150-foot) steel towers at an undeveloped lot on McKenzie Way, about 330 metres from the Tsawwassen border.

A 3,600-name petition is to be presented to MP Kerry-Lynne Findlay today. The towers are to transmit South Asian radio station KRPI, AM 1550, but many residents on both sides of the border have been fighting the plan, primarily due to concerns over blanketing interference and the havoc it could cause with household electronic devices. Also known as SherE-Punjab, the company currently broadcasts using antenna in Ferndale, Wash., but wants to move them closer and have a stronger 50,000-watt, all-day signal. Although the current towers and the ones proposed for Point Roberts are located in the United States, SherE-Punjab broadcasts to a Lower Mainland audience from studios in Richmond. The Federal Communications has already granted a construction permit, but one final hurdle remains with a conditional use permit required from Whatcom County. The coalition is plan-
ning to attend the Whatcom County hearing, which is set for five days in late October and November. Residents cite a number of concerns, including the environmental, economic and social impacts, the process, as well as blanketing interference and the health impacts of radio waves. The coalition has been fundraising and gathering signatures on a petition all summer. With more than 3,600 names on the petition demanding Canadian government intervention, the group is presenting it to Delta-Richmond East MP Kerry-Lynne Findlay today to take to Ottawa. The coalition is holding a benefit concert this weekend at the Cottages at Seabright Farms in Point Roberts. The event, which will feature live music, a barbecue and silent auction, takes place Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m. For more information, visit notowers.webs.com.

Kevin Sabet says he rejects both legalizing and criminalizing marijuana BY
JESSICA KERR
jkerr@delta-optimist.com
There is a third option in the debate over the legalization of marijuana, at least according to one organization. Jim Stimson of the Little House Society in Tsawwassen recently invited Kevin Sabet of Smart Approaches to Marijuana (SAM) to speak to the Tsawwassen Rotary Club followed by a second talk for invited guests. Sabet is director of the Drug Policy Institute at the University of Florida, a former White House advisor and co-founder of SAM, an alliance of organizations and individuals promoting a middle ground between incarceration and legalization. He is also the author of Reefer Sanity: Seven Great Myths About Marijuana. Earlier this year, Stimson joined the founding board of Smart Approaches to Marijuana Canada (SAMC), SAM’s first international affiliate. SAMC was launched in Ottawa in March. “The project SAM held the same beliefs ... that I personally held inside of me,” Stimson said of his reasons for joining the group. Sabet said the debate in both the U.S. and Canada around whether to legalize marijuana is based on a false dichotomy that there are only two ways to look at the issue — either legalize or criminalize. “I reject both of these,” he said. “Law enforcement knows that we cannot arrest our way out of drug problems... There’s something about drug addiction that affects people’s behaviour,” he
SUBMITTED PHOTO
Kevin Sabet of Smart Approaches to Marijuana recently spoke to the Tsawwassen Rotary Club. said. “Given that, we need to come up with smarter solutions.” Sabet and SAM are championing a health-first approach that decreases marijuana use yet does not harm users and lower level dealers with arrest records that can lead to a life-long stigma. “We’re not a scare-mongering organization, we’re here to present the evidence,” he said. Sabet said one of the myths about marijuana, one touted by many of those who are in favour of legalizing the drug, is that pot is harmless and not addictive. And while Sabet agrees that many can and do use the drug without becoming addicted, he said the chances of becoming addicted, or suffering ill effects from ingesting the drug, increase the younger people start using. “The adolescent brain is especially susceptible to marijuana use,” he said, adding that one in six teens
that use the drug become addicted. That number drops to one in 10 for users who do not start until adulthood. “I’m concerned about the heavy user and the user who starts young,” Sabet said. He said the myth that marijuana is harmless also stems from the fact the drug has changed a lot since the 1960s and ‘70s. In the past 15 years, the potency of pot has tripled and it’s increased five fold since 1960, he said, adding much of the research around the effects of marijuana has not been carried out using new strains of the drug. “I don’t believe that we’re ready to legalize this drug,” Stimson said. “We’re not talking about the same drug.” Two American states, Washington and Colorado, recently legalized the sale of marijuana and have already seen an influx of stores selling the drug in
various forms, including chocolate bars, candy and pop. Sabet said the early data from Colorado is just starting to come in. “It’s not looking really pretty at all in Colorado,” he said. The tax revenues are not anywhere close to what was projected, he said, there have been two deaths directly linked to the legalization of marijuana and poison control centres have seen an increase in calls from parents of children who have ingested pot-laced sweets. “The level of denial, systemic denial, is angering,” Sabet said. Sabet said SAM and SAMC would like to see an increase in prevention, intervention, treatment and overall awareness. “We want an elevated dialogue without the shouting matches,” he said. “People are ready for a smarter conversation about marijuana that eschews extremes. They want to know the science, not the rhetoric.” Stimson said he joined the SAMC movement because of what he’s seen through his work in the field of addiction. “As a society, we should not be pushing to legalize this drug, maybe ever,” he said. “It’s not the success that it’s built up to be.” Stimson said it’s adamantly clear to him that marijuana is a problem in Delta and the problem is on the rise. “Let’s not risk doing any harm until we know more,” he said. TED MURPHY
MURPHY’S LAW A deal that provided significant classroom improvements but didn’t break the proverbial bank simply didn’t exist — or at least that’s what we were led to believe during the prolonged labour strife between B.C.’s teachers and the provincial government. The teachers, we were told, were asking for too much and acquiescing to their demands would come with a steep price, one too dear for taxpayers to absorb. As a result, we got more than a year of onand-off bargaining, followed by a month of rotating job action before a full-scale strike closed schools in June and kept them shut into September. Given the chasm that separated the two sides, which made bargaining sessions both infrequent and pointless, it looked to me like we were headed for yet another legislated conclusion to this sordid saga. Yet the agreement that was expected to be ratified yesterday (results of the teachers’ vote weren’t known before our press deadline) finds a middle ground that didn’t, until earlier this week, appear to even exist. Even with $400 million being infused into the education system to hire new teachers over the life of the six-year contract, Premier Christy Clark says the agreement is within Victoria’s fiscal plan and won’t result in higher taxes, more debt or a reduction of services. Say what? If the government had that type of negotiating flexibility all along, and could absorb a cost increase of that magnitude without breaking the public purse, why did it take so long to broker a deal? If negotiators for the employer had come to the table with something even remotely close to the eventually agreed upon figure, surely it would have started a ball rolling that didn’t seem to move until very late in the game. To their credit, teachers did put learning conditions ahead of their own salaries, agreeing (presumably) to an increase of just 7.25 per cent over six years. It’s clear they were willing to come down — way down — on their wage demands, so if the province had moved earlier on the issue of class size and composition, you’d think this agreement could have been signed long ago. I could make more sense of this whole charade it if the government had stuck to its cupboard-is-bare stance and ultimately legislated teachers back to work, but if there is indeed money in public coffers to make a negotiated settlement a reality, then why the heck were schools closed for five weeks? This deal should have been consummated before any classes were missed.
‘Hort in the Hood’ lets families grow attachment to schools MIKE SCHNEIDER
COMMUNITY COMMENT Even with the good and welcomed news of a negotiated settlement, both sides of the teachers’ dispute took it on the chin from radio commentators the other day. There will obviously be some good and some bad in the deal for the government and the union. There will be lots of time to question the details through the term of the settlement but I am hoping that emotions can remain in check, at least for now, so the positives can be embraced by everyone, but mostly by families and children. One of the recurring themes during the dispute was the observation that perhaps families could become more involved in school activities. It’s tough volunteering. Not everybody has the time. Really, though, only a half-hour a week can make a huge difference. We are lucky in Delta to have a school district that is committed to
a “Bold Vision.” If you are unaware of the vision, I would encourage you to read it on their website at web.deltasd.bc.ca. If you are a parent of schoolaged children here in Delta, you should be proud of what administrators and educators are doing here. Created in 2011, the district’s “Bold Vision” attempts to ensure: “The Delta School District is a leading district for innovative teaching and learner success.” The district’s academy program is a fine example of this innovation. This year the district is going to expand upon its unit based agriliteracy program Project Pickle to support the International Year of Family Farming. This will see the district further its quest for innovation by bringing awareness to the Year of Family Farming and invite interested families, through “Hort in the Hood,” to manage portions of school neighbourhood farms with their children at various times of the year. Through Year of Family Farming, the United Nations is trying to tell the world such facts as family farming is the predominant form of agriculture in both developed and developing countries and that there are over 500 million family farms in the world.

In the Western world, we all know by now that the average age of farmers is around 56 years and climbing. There are signs that younger farmers are making an effort to understand and make a living from the craft, but governments, agencies, the private sector and educators have to do more to promote agri-literacy with young people on the ground. Schools have and will continue to be meeting places for friends, families and neighbours. By affording an opportunity to work side-by-side growing, harvesting and ultimately sharing and eating food that they have grown themselves right on their own school neighbourhood farms, the broader school family will only serve to strengthen local social fabric. The effort here is to build community, and is certainly not intended to change the world. Rather, it is hoped that meaningful memories will be created in the minds of young people who may wish to pursue careers in the greater food economy or be happy to make their own killer salad with homegrown veggies. If a farmer or 10 comes out of the mix at some point in the future, that’s a bonus!

Letters to the Editor
‘Economically viable’ not a reason to amend plan Editor: Delta has specific guidelines in the Ladner Area Plan and the Official Community Plan that are there for good reason: to protect the character of Ladner Village and surrounding areas. The developer of the property at the corner of 47A Avenue and 48B Street is asking Delta council to change the rules so his project will remain “economically viable,” as was stated at the public information meeting earlier this month. While the developer has significantly changed his original design, there remain two major issues: The developer is requesting a change in zoning from eight units per acre to 30
units per acre and is also requesting a major variance to the road allowance. Why these two requests? The developer understandably wants to maximize the number of units on this parcel of land to maximize his profits and at the same time asks that we ignore or bend the rules that are in place. When asked at the public meeting why these requests were necessary, it was stated that a smaller building would not be “economically viable.” With due respect to council and the public’s gullibility, it appears the developer may have misjudged the public outcry and perhaps could have formulated a business plan based on what could be developed with
respect to the rules of the current Official Community Plan and specifically the Ladner Area Plan. Then determine if the project is viable. Don’t ask for forgiveness based on an economic argument because one did not follow the rules. For the developer to use the argument that his project will not be economically viable (or not enough profit perhaps) if we don’t change the Ladner Area Plan appears to be at least bad planning on his part or at worst may be a calculated play that council will let this roll through. I object to this proposal and ask that council send it back to the drawing board. Brian E. Webb

Discovery in the Arctic hits close to home for another Tsawwassenite
Editor: Re: Discovery hits close to home, Sept. 12 I have used marathon events to get glimpses of different parts of the world and that included running a marathon from Artic Bay to Nanisivik on the top of Baffin Island. I took part of a sightseeing tour of the Arctic. Not only did we see beluga whales and polar bears below us, the pilots of the two twin-otter planes landed on the beach of “Beeche Island,” only metres away from the graves of some of the men that were buried

Ladner Village project still needs fine-tuning Editor: As a Ladner resident who attended the Sept. 10 information meeting about the townhouse proposal at 47A Avenue and 48B Street, and listened to the public’s comments, I still have major concerns that the project needs further revision to make it agreeable to our neighbourhood.
Even though the proposal went from a five-storey to a three-storey project, the newly proposed density is still much denser than what is presently on that site. This project also should include more on-site green space — to make life more livable for any new owners — particularly in light of the potential removal of
about 20 mature evergreen trees. In addition, the proposal needs to be moved further back from busy 47A Avenue to avoid potential road safety hazards. In summary, the developer’s revised plan still needs more fine-tuning to fit in with our community. B. Yaworski

Several independent candidates for Delta council are looking at joining forces in the hope of having a better chance of sending their messages to the electorate. Peter van der Velden, Nicholas Wong, Jennifer Thoss, Johann Ackermann and Lori Mayhew are looking into running as a group of “like-minded independents.” It would be a somewhat similar to what can be seen by Mayor Lois Jackson’s Delta Independent Voters’

Association ticket as well as how councillors Bruce McDonald and Jeannie Kanakos ran together in the previous election, even though they all declared themselves as independents. Wong told the Optimist the more he talks with the others who intend to file their candidacy for the Nov. 15 municipal election, the more they realize they have much in common when it comes to their ideas on development and other issues. “It is kind of coalescing, it seems. At this point we are exchanging ideas and
seeing if we can pool our resources in a fairly informal way,” he said. The independents believe they may have a better chance by pooling their resources in what can be an expensive undertaking. They also believe they may be able to better spread the word to the electorate that there are others in the community who have the skills and ideas to be worthy council members. At this point, however, they are still exploring the idea of a potential collective, said van der Velden. Thoss agreed, noting they
are discussing a number of good ideas in what could be an exciting effort. Every incumbent on Delta council has now declared they’ll run again. The only guarantee is that someone on the outside will get one seat with the spot formerly occupied by Delta North MLA Scott Hamilton now vacant. As far as incumbents getting defeated, although it’s not impossible, it doesn’t happen often. Since the early 1990s, only two sitting councillors — Anne Peterson and Ann Claggett — have lost their seats.

Residents turn to Delta for help with raccoons

They may look cute but they’ve become a dangerous nuisance. That’s what Coun. Bruce McDonald had to say last week about a growing raccoon problem that may be difficult to solve. “They’re becoming habituated in all our communities. Everyone thinks they’re cute, but they are not fuzzy. They are wild animals and they carry parasites,” McDonald said. The veteran councillor was referring to a recent letter to Delta council by Frank Savereux, president of the Monterra strata council in Boundary Bay, who asked for the municipality’s help in finding ways to deal with a growing raccoon population. Noting the animals eat just about everything and lack any real predators, Savereux said that over the years the housing complex has followed guidelines by the BCSPCA and other
agencies to deter raccoons to no avail. “We have worked to ensure residents do not feed raccoons. We regularly remind owners to keep pet food and water bowls inside so raccoons do not find easy meals. We do not stock our ponds with fish. Vegetable and fruit gardens are not permitted. “We have spent a considerable amount of money over the years to have large portions of our 20-acre site sprayed with nematodes to eliminate grubs which raccoons feed on. In short, we feel we have done everything responsible property owners can do to eliminate food attractants,” Savereux wrote. Unfortunately, he noted, raccoons continue to find food. McDonald described several other problems facing residents, including pest control companies not dealing with raccoons unless they are inside someone’s home. Coun. Jeannie Kanakos

agreed raccoons have become a problem even in her own neighbourhood in North Delta, where in the last three years there have been attacks on dogs and cats, which almost never occurred in her 30-plus years living there. Council directed staff members to look into the issue and report back on possible solutions that have been tried elsewhere. “It’s going to have to be dealt with at some point. The numbers are really growing fast. It’s difficult to trap them and if you move them, they won’t survive. I’m not sure what the solution is,” McDonald said.

Connection failed Can you hear me now? Note from John 5:26: “For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself.” While traveling, I find myself regularly asking, “Do you have WiFi?” And then, depending on the answer, the following question, “Could I please have the password?” Then I log on and connect with others via the Internet. I see this everyday act as a metaphor of communicating with God and others. Saying, “The Father has life in himself,” is like saying, “He is the prime WiFi connection.” And in saying that the Father had granted Jesus the same power, that we might have life in His name, is like saying the Father creates a “hotspot” in the Son. And they share the
same power, so that when I or anyone logs on in Jesus’ name (the password, if you will), we will have a strong connection and be able to communicate freely. How many times during my travels have I attempted to post a photo and caption, and because of a weak or intermittent signal, been frustrated by the “unable to send” message. As a result, the intended message was impossible to communicate. To know a strong connection with God in this life, and an even stronger one in the life to come, is to have hope. I share this reflection from John’s Gospel in the hope that someone — you perhaps? — might also find a clear and powerful connection to God through Jesus Christ. I only hope this post will upload to Facebook...

Big crowd, big laughs Ladner comedian Darcy Michael to perform at Rogers Arena BY
DAVE WILLIS

L
adner actor and comedian Darcy Michael will take the stage at Rogers Arena next weekend to open for Russell Peters. Michael is one of the finalists in SiriusXM’s Top Comic competition that gets to open for Peters on his Almost Famous Tour across Canada. “The biggest audience I’ve played for before this is about 5,000, so the chance to play for a crowd four times that size is incredibly exciting,” Michael says in an e-mail to the Optimist. “Adding that it’s in my hometown just puts me over the moon. Normally all my exciting shows happen in Montreal at Just for Laughs or Toronto so to be able to have my family and friends at this one will be great.” He says he got the news from a buddy at XM and, naturally, didn’t believe him. “I still won’t be surprised if I show up to Rogers Arena on show day to find out I was just being punked.” Michael is in the midst of
finishing a tour and packing for his move back to Toronto to film the second season of Spun Out, a workplace comedy on CTV. His summer dates have included Just for Laughs in Montreal, as well as Vancouver and Calgary Pride. Michael is set to perform at the Comedy Mix in Vancouver this week (Sept. 18 to 20) before heading to Toronto for the Top Comic Finals on Sept. 25.

The winner takes home $15,000. Asked about any plans for the cash if he wins, Michael says, “This is where I say something exciting like a vacation around the world but I’ll probably do something boring like pay some student
loan debts and maybe buy another month membership at the Ladner Rec. Centre.” He plays Gordon Woolmer, one of the characters working at a public relations agency, on Spun Out. Asked if he could give any hints about what to expect from his character in the show’s second season, Michael notes the writers know him too well, “and by that they know I have a big mouth so they don’t let me see any scripts until we start shooting. It’s very nerve wracking but I trust that this season will see Gordon up to his usual antics ... and plenty of cat jokes.” He’ll be in Toronto until just before Christmas then come home for a few weeks before starting a 2015 tour. Michael received a 2014 Canadian Comedy Awards nomination in the Best Breakout Artist category. Michael opens for Russell Peters on Saturday, Sept. 27 at Rogers Arena in Vancouver at 8 p.m. Ticket prices range from $51.75 to $125. Visit www.ticketmaster.ca for tickets. Tips for weight maintenance p.j. wren
Well on Your Way Some people have weight loss down to a fine art. In
fact, they are so good at it they keep losing and gaining the same 10 pounds for most of their adult life. It’s weight maintenance that’s the kicker. Science Daily (2011) reported that only one in every six Americans who have ever been overweight
or obese loses and maintains their weight loss. That is only a 16 per cent success rate. Not very good stats for anyone who needs to shave a few (or a lot) pounds. Don’t get discouraged, though. There are some science-backed tricks that

you can do to maintain your weight loss. First, the kitchen trumps the gym. To maintain your weight loss, you need to know right off the bat that diet is 100 per cent king. Yes, exercise will burn calories, tone muscles and get you fit, but what you put in your mouth will dictate how your jeans fit. The problem with using exercise alone for weight loss and maintenance is that most people tend to use food as a reward system (“I just ran five miles, I deserve that cookie.”). Exercise can also make you feel hungrier. Most people also tend to compensate for the calories they expend. So, if you never adjust your calories, science is telling us, “Don’t worry, your waistline will re-adjust itself then.” Second, muscle equals svelte. For every pound of muscle the body has, it burns about 6.5 calories per hour. For every pound of fat, 1.5 calories per hour. Muscles are more metabolically active and require
a lot more work from the body to keep them warm. So, more muscle mass means your body is a more efficient fat-burning machine — at rest and at work. How do you create more muscle? Strength training! Use weights that fatigue the muscles and break them down, and you will increase your lean muscle, mass making you stronger while keeping your weight in check. Third, there is no magic formula. There is no right combination of food groups. Any diet will help you lose weight (because it’s restricting calories). What you have to find (and follow) as a maintenance diet is one that is flexible and that you can do for life. Of course junk food, high-glycemic carbs and processed foods are off limits. But, are any of the popular diets out there (such as Paleo, gluten-free, Weight Watchers) best for weight maintenance? The experts say no.
The true recipe for success is eating real food and less of it. If you do happen to go a little overboard with one meal, then understand that you have reel it in for the remainder of the day. And finally, eat real food, reduce calories, exercise, rinse and repeat. What weight maintenance really boils down to is the re-wiring of the brain. You need to establish the newly formed habits that helped you lose the weight in the first place as routine. Develop habits, rituals and routines that last. Let it become second nature to prep on Sunday, workout four to five days a week, walk every night, sleep soundly each evening and meditate to help manage stress. It’s only through behaviour change that lifelong weight control can happen. PJ Wren is a local personal trainer with both an online and in-person training company. Astounding Amazon Basin Anaconda tops wildlife sighting list on trip deep into the jungle BY IRENE
BUTLER
Optimist contributor
Standing at the front of the canoe, our guide Miguel watches for movement along the Cuyabeno River. He points at red-howler monkeys in treetops, a yellow toucan and a pair of harp eagles. Most unusual is the prehistoric-looking hoatzin (a.k.a. stinky turkey), its foul odour the result of a digestive system wherein vegetable matter ferments in its crop. My husband Rick and I are deep in the Amazon Basin, known locally as Amazonia. “Thirty million years ago,” says Miguel, “this whole area was under the ocean.” Arriving at Jamu Lodge, our home for three nights, we settle into a thatched roofed hut with walls open to the elements from chest level up. We look appreciatively at the mosquito net draping our bed. A lone electric light is to be used sparingly. Jamu is one of 11 Eco lodges along the
Cuyabeno. “A” for anaconda tops my wildlife sighting list, specifically the green anaconda. These kings and queens of the jungle swim with ease in slow-moving rivers, often slithering up onto tree branches to sun themselves. The females are larger, reaching up to nine metres (30 feet) in length and weighing 227 kg (500 pounds). I mention my wish to Miguel, who says, “We can only hope.” After a fine supper, we canoe with fellow adventurers to Laguna Grande for a glorious sunset (and cooling) swim, trusting in Miguel’s words: “You are of no interest to the piranha, their sharp teeth have evolved to crack open hard seeds.” With the fall of darkness, the stars glitter like a city in the sky. The next morning, fitted with hefty rubber boots, it’s off for a jungle trek. As we maneuver through tangles of dense growth, Miguel warns, “Watch what you touch.” He taps a tree trunk

and a frenzy of teeny ants appears. “These are called stripper ants, as if they transfer to your body, you’ll be ripping your clothes off.” He commences to share facts about Nature’s Pharmacy. Scraping bark off a camphor tree releases a familiar medicinal scent.
A cut into another tree draws red sap used for healing internal infections and external wounds. It is said 70 per cent of medicines come from the Amazon rainforest. We later canoe to a river section where giant-sized trees sprout from the water
— the perfect sunning place for snakes. We admire a boa constrictor twisting its lengthy body on a branch above our heads, sensing us with its flicking tongue. We slowly move around more trees, but, alas, no anaconda. A night trek brings us a face-to-face encounter with the jungle’s most lively time, when most creatures hunt and feed. A concert of sounds resonates; the energy is palpable. With flashlights, we gingerly walk along snapping pictures (without flash) of scorpions, tarantulas and communal spiders in humungous webs. The following day we travel further down the river to visit a shaman of the Siona (one of five indigenous peoples). We are greeted by a smallish man with necklaces of shells and jaguar teeth, his cap the vivid colours of bird feathers. A bottle of Ayahuasca, a powerful hallucinogen, is passed around for us to inspect. The shaman tells how
the first response to drinking it is violent vomiting, a cleansing necessary to link the spiritual and physical worlds in order to aide those who ask for his help in ridding their bodies of evil forces. Today, the Shaman will demonstrate a simple ritual to enhance good vibrations. He chooses Oliver from our group of 10, whose face pales as the shaman chants and swirls tobacco leaves around his head. On our canoe journey back out of the Amazon Basin, we see passengers in another canoe staring into thick foliage. Their driver whispers, “Anaconda.” My heart drums as my eyes fall on a green and yellowish pattern. Speculations are this young jungle queen is over two metres long. I beam at Rick, “Now, is this not an A+ ending?” Travel Writers’ Tales is an independent travel article syndicate that offers professionally written travel articles to newspaper editors and publishers. Author to meet readers in Ladner
Annual General Meeting 2014
Author Mauro Azzano will be at Black Bond Books in Ladner this weekend for a meet and greet to promote his new novel. Azzano, who lives in Richmond, will be in town to promote his second novel, Death Works at Night, a follow up to his debut work, The Dead Don’t Dream, which was released in 2012. Both stories are set in Toronto in the 1970s and feature main character Ian McBriar, a Metis police detective from Saskatchewan. “The first one was just a story that was stuck in my head for literally 15 years,” Azzano says. “A lot of people really took to the characters,” he says, adding there were a number of unanswered questions from the first book that prompted the second one. “He’s a lot less idealistic in book two than he was in

Program aims to help the disabled in retirement Speaker at Canadian Mental Health Association Delta’s AGM to discuss Registered Disability Savings Program The Canadian Mental Health Association Delta is hoping to spread the word about a program that can financially benefit people living with a disability. The association has invited financial advisor Darren Gallagher to its annual general meeting next week to talk about the Registered Disability Savings Program (RDSP). “Through our work and travels in the community, it became apparent that either
people are not aware of this opportunity or are confused by what it is or isn’t,” said executive director Judy Gray. “We talk to many folks who are trying to manage their way through life on extremely limited incomes, or are family members concerned about how their loved ones are going to manage once they are gone.” Gallagher said the program, which has been around since 2008, is
“terribly unknown and it shouldn’t be. “It’s been around for six years and not a lot of people have heard of it.” The aim of the program is to ensure adequate income in retirement for people with disabilities. “It’s the best investment a person with a disability, their family members or people who care about them can make,” Gallagher said. The RDSP includes two elements, the Canada

Change is a challenge for anyone, especially those in more mature years. While a move is stressful enough, add to that, grieving the loss of your life partner and trying to adjust to new surroundings altogether. A real upheaval. QUESTION:
We’ve been thinking about downsizing from our home and haven’t bought or sold in a long while. What should we expect during this process?
I have been toying with the idea of taking a cruise but I have no idea where to start. What do you suggest?
Anneliese Giesbrecht
Most successful agencies will host information evenings where a cruise line representative comes in and speaks about their product. At Expedia CruiseShipCenters we are very fortunate to have such great support in our cruise line partners. They are always in training mode, keeping us up to date on product knowledge and industry goingson. In fact, on Sept 27th at the Delta Town and Country we are hosting our annual World Explorer Event. This is a full day of seminars with seven cruise lines being represented. Whether you are young honeymooners, retired baby boomers or multi generational families; whether you are looking for the megaships sailing in the Caribbean or a 150 passenger river cruise sailing down the Rhine, we will have something for you. Space is limited, call us today to get full details.

The benefits of Naturopathic Medicine are not limited to physical health but also mental and emotional health. Patients report improvements in energy, mental clarity, decision-making capabilities, stress management and greater balance and emotional being. Perhaps the most exciting benefit of Naturopathic Medicine is the preventative measure against chronic degenerative diseases such as heart disease, obesity, diabetes, respiratory illness, cancer and metabolic disorders.
What Can HoneyDo For You?
ANSWER: First and foremost I urge you to find a great travel agent, particularly one specializing in cruise vacations. Look for a reputable agency, one with a well-known name behind it, as with this name will come great knowledge and long-term agents who know their products and destinations. An experienced agent will most likely have been on a few cruises and will gladly share their experiences with you.
The benefits of Naturopathic Medicine are many and reflect an overall improvement in the patient’s health status. Better health is achieved as a result of promoting balance within the underlying physiological systems including the endocrine, immune and digestive.

into. If the plan is to move into a condo or townhome, there are many considerations that should be made. For example: how much square footage do you need, how many bedrooms and bathrooms are ideal, do you need parking for vehicles, do you need extra storage, do you have any specific requirements like ground floor or top floor, do you have pets, do you prefer sunny or more shaded exposures, do you wish to be close to amenities like shopping, services, transit or recreation facilities etc. You also need to consider monthly strata fees that cover things like maintenance, insurance, building management etc. What costs are involved with purchasing such as property transfer tax, legal fees, down payments etc. A good Realtor will help you with all of these decisions that are important to you. On the selling side, your Realtor will determine the strategy in marketing your home to best suit your motivation. It is important to work with a professional that is experienced in knowing how to prepare your home for sale and presenting it in a fashion that will generate the most amount of interest. In today’s marketplace, be sure that your agent discusses all of the modern technologies available that can showcase your home to the masses using many different advertising mediums. You should also discuss the costs involved with selling such as commissions, legal fees, moving fees etc. You may have also collected many “treasures” over years that may not be able to fit into your new home. Your Realtor can also discuss strategies on how to decide what items to keep and what to get rid of. Our team of professionals can help you with the entire process so this new transition feels as seamless and comfortable as possible. Chance to hone scooter driving skills at Seniors Expo tomorrow at McKee The Delta Police Department is offering local seniors a chance to bone up on their motorized scooter driving skills. The hands-on clinic is part of the Corporation of Delta’s first-ever Seniors Expo, which is set for tomorrow at McKee Seniors’ Recreation Centre in Ladner. The aim of the expo is to provide seniors with information on resources and services available in the community.
A similar expo will be held at the Kennedy Seniors’ Recreation Centre in North Delta on Saturday, Oct. 4. Delta police officers and volunteers will be on hand to provide a Scooter 101 information session, which will also include an obstacle course for those seniors wanting to improve their driving skills in a safe environment. Participants will be able to practice turning, maneuvering between
obstacles and driving backwards while maintaining control at all times. With the recent rise in the use of motorized scooters, more and more seniors are relying on the mobility devices to move around. “As scooters do not require any form or registration or licensing and are classified as pedestrians, some education is needed to provide drivers with the training to safely maneuver and operate a scooter,” said
Delta police spokesperson Sgt. Sarah Swallow. Crossroads Mobility Solutions has offered use of its scooters and donated two scooters as door prizes. The Seniors Expo runs 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. The scooter information session is on from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Admission is free. SUBMITTED PHOTO

QUESTION:
Are we better off Renovating or Re-Locating? That’s the Big Money question!
ANSWER:
Mike Phillips owner
For obvious reasons your realtor will make a good case to simply re-locate (ah, but not so simple!) Conversely, a good Renovator can take that existing house and make it your Dream Home! In my opinion there are 3 main factors to consider: 1. Do we enjoy living in our present location, as it is a lot of work and expense to re-locate. 2. Can we work with this existing house and bring our ideas to life here. 3. How long do we foresee ourselves in this location. All very important considerations indeed! First is going to be personal for each family and I just take into consideration the upheaval involved to re-locate. Second is where consultation with a professional Renovator can help you in the re-configuration or addition to your existing layout. Third and most important with regards to your investment in any renovation is your commitment to location. If you have a short 1-3 year plan in mind then cosmetics and immediate repairs only or you risk losing most of your investment. If you foresee a 5-10 year stay then I feel you are safe in the 50K to 150K investment into your property upgrades as you are now renovating to increase the value in your home plus adding livability and quality to your lifestyle! Beyond that time frame it’s only about wants vs. needs and the total affordability of your Dream Project! MRP Renovations is here to solve all your renovating Want’s and Need’s! QUESTION: Are biweekly and semi monthly payments the same?
QUESTION: The Role of the Executor – “To be or Not to be…that is the question!?”
ANSWER:
ANSWER:
Lisa Manwaring AMP
No … they are different and one can save you thousands! While the amount of the payments might be the same, a semi monthly payment frequency will be taken 2x a month (usually the 15th and the 30th) and really does not have an impact to your interest savings. A bi-weekly payment is paid every 2 weeks and in the case of a 25 year amortization paying every 2 weeks can take up to 4 years off you mortgage. Many smart home owners will match their biweekly payments with their payroll dates ensuring that the funds are there come mortgage payment time! Meridian Southwest Mortgage Group Ltd. Although it is frequently viewed by a Will maker as an “honour “ bestowed upon ones nearest and dearest, the role of Executor comes with deadly serious responsibilities and duties, and should not be taken lightly. Depending on the complexity and size of the Estate to be administered, it could be a trap for the unwary! The basic duties of the executor are to collect the assets of the estate; deal with creditors and claims, including tax issues; administer and distribute the assets to the beneficiaries in accordance with the Will. The most problematic of all of these duties is dealing with and accounting to the beneficiaries. An executor must be scrupulous and even handed in their dealings with the beneficiaries. There can be no hint of “Self-dealing” gain or benefit from the position bearing in mind that there will be a passing of Accounts. An executor may be reimbursed for reasonable expenses pursuant to the terms of the Will or the legislation (s88 Trustee Act R.S.B.C 1996, c 494) or by prior agreement with the testator. When deciding to be or not to be an Executor – speak with a lawyer to get the heads up on your obligations. Elizabeth Stolier

Cammidge House to celebrate century Free day of entertainment and activities set for Sunday at historic farmhouse in Boundary Bay Regional Park
A day of entertainment and educational activities will be held Sunday to celebrate the 100th birthday of the Cammidge House, the popular heritage farmhouse in Boundary Bay Regional Park. “The program for the day has been designed to provide a glimpse of life in the rejuvenated farmhouse through the last century,” says Cammidge House Committee chairman Geof Hacker. Scheduled to run from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., the event will take place primarily on the grounds of the house and will feature interactive displays by organizations such as Metro Vancouver, Boy Scouts, Delta Naturalists Society, Earthwise Society, Delta Heritage Air Park, Delta Museum and more. Vintage cars will be parked on the concourse and refreshments can be purchased from the Tsawwassen Boundary Bay Lions Club mobile kitchen. Members of the wellknown Boundary Bay
Quilters Guild have created a magnificent quilt depicting Cammidge House and Boundary Bay, which will be on display. Members will also be on the front porch illustrating the creativity entailed in designing and sewing a quilt. The most important section of the day will commence at 2 p.m. with ceremonial activities, including, weather permitting, a fly past of Trevor Skillen’s Second World War bi-plane. Dignitaries and guests will be piped in and after short speeches, the first of 100 Nootka rose bushes will be planted along the fence in front of the house. A 100th birthday must have a cake, and this one will feature 100 cupcakes, however provision has been made for more to be added so there will be some for everyone.
The first 50 years of the farmhouse’s life were enjoyed for the purpose it was built, providing a comfortable residence for its farmer owners. Although it was initially constructed in 1914 by Edwin Cammidge and reflected his success as a farmer, he resided there for about 13 years before other farming families purchased the property. As time passed the house was often left neglected and eventually vandalized. It was the Tsawwassen Boundary Bay Lions Club that envisaged a future for

Cammidge House and in co-operation with Metro Vancouver, reached an agreement to relocate it to its present site in Boundary Bay Regional Park. The Lions committed to raising half of the $350,000 relocation and renovation cost, and with the help of Century Group, the dream soon became a reality. In 2001, the rejuvenated farmhouse, with most of its original features intact, was given a new lease on life as a venue for weddings, parties and community events. Over the past 13 years, South Delta residents have looked forward to Santa Comes to Cammidge House, Heritage Day celebrations and the Father’s Day pancake breakfast. Cammidge House also hosts car boot sales, bird photography workshops and many other activities. For more information on Cammidge House or the anniversary celebrations, visit www.boundarybayparkassociation.wordpress.com or call 604-943-1303.

Workshop urges caregivers to make self-care a priority How do we take care of ourselves when we’re caring for others? It’s an important question for many Ladner families who are providing care giving for a loved one. “But the question is too often overlooked,” says Krista Frazee, the Alzheimer Society of B.C.’s support and education coordinator for Richmond and South Delta. “While care-
givers are doing their best to take care of the person with dementia, many tend to forget to care for themselves. “While it may be difficult for caregivers to prioritize their own needs, they must try,” Frazee adds. Self-care will improve the quality of life of both themselves and the person for whom they are caring.
“Caregivers sometimes need to be reminded that caring for a person with dementia can also lead to physical and emotional wear and tear, or even burnout.” Burnout depletes energy, your body’s defence mechanisms and your ability to cope. Mood, attitude, motivation and behaviour are also negatively affected.
“Supporting a person with Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia is a challenging responsibility,” she says. “It can feel overwhelming throughout the different stages of the disease.” To ease the stress for Ladner families, the society is bringing a free Self-Care for Caregivers workshop to Ladner on Tuesday, Sept.

Ice Hawks leave Sungod with big win Delta Ice Hawks bid so long to their temporary home with a big early season win over a perennial league powerhouse. Rookie goaltender Jacob Latrace made 40 saves and South Delta Minor grad Mark Trotman scored in the late stages of the third period to lift the Ice Hawks to a 3-2 victory over the Richmond Sockeyes on Tuesday night at Sungod Arena. It was the Hawks final game at the North Delta venue with the Ladner Leisure Centre’s ice rink slated to re-open in time for the Grandview Steelers visit on Tuesday at 7:35 p.m. Dating back to last season, Delta had lost three straight games to its cross-river rival and was outscored 15-5 in the process. The difference this time was Latrace who continued his spectacular play and remains unbeaten as an Ice Hawk with a 4-0 record. The 17-year-old rookie was at his best in the third period when the Hawks ran into penalty trouble and he faced 15 shots, making several excellent stops in the late going

Royals will be Devils first big test
South Delta opens AAA conference football play on Saturday with visit from North Shore school South Delta Sun Devils will get their first big test of the season when they open conference play at the elite AAA level Saturday against the Handsworth Royals. After two impressive wins out of the gate, the bar will be considerably higher against a Royals team that opened its season with a 54-20 victory over Sentinel and advanced to the second round of last year’s AAA playoffs until bowing out to WJ Mouat. The North Vancouver school will be led by quarterback Mihai Lapuste who threw three touchdown passes against Sentinel and also ran in for three majors. The
teams last met during the 2011 season when the Royals handed South Delta a 19-16 regular season loss. The Sun Devils are coming off a 37-6 win over the Rutland Vodoo last Friday in Kelowna. Senior quarterback Lucas Kirk had a big outing — completing 12 of 28 passes for 228 yards and three touchdowns. His favourite target was Thomas Franklin with five catches for 113 yards. Jack McDonald also hit the century mark on three receptions, highlighted by a 90-yard TD strike in the fourth quarter to close out the scoring. He added five-yard major, while Gord Cooper also had a TD
through the air. First half touchdown runs by Michael Mann and Grade 10 Grant McDonald rounded out the South Delta scoring. The Sun Devils accumulated 127 yards along the ground and 365 yards in total offence. The defence produced three turnovers. Game time Saturday is 1:30 p.m. at SDSS End Zone… Former Sun Devil quarterback Mitch Rushton made his season debut in a relief role during the SFU Clan’s 38-14 home field loss to Western Oregon last Saturday at Swangard Stadium. The 6-foot-5
junior completed three of seven passes for 23 yards after coming in for starter Ryan Stanford. Rushton saw action in two games last season, throwing for 232 yards on 21 completions. He transferred to SFU from Santa Ana Junior College. He is now playing for former B.C. Lions offensive coordinator Jacques Chapdelaine who took over the SFU head coaching duties this season. SFU (0-2) hit the road for four games before returning home Oct. 18. The Clansmen’s roster also includes former Sun Devils offensive lineman Aaron Parker who is in his freshman season.

Ladner Celtic battled the Central City Breakers Ambush in District 5 Boys Soccer League U12 Division One action last Saturday.
Delta’s Gino Pastro has been named to the B.C. Thunder coaching staff as it prepares to return to the National Ringette League after a one year absence. Pastro will be joined behind the bench by Cathy Lipsett of Salmon Arm. Both were with the team when it last operated during the 2012-13 season The club is now owned and operated by Dale Hannesson. “We are all extremely excited to have an ownership group, coaches and players committed to getting the B.C. Thunder back on the ice for the 2014-15 season,” said Hannesson. “Gino and Cathy join a strong group of committed NRL veterans and the future looks very promising for the Thunder franchise.” Pastro spent last season coaching both the Lower Mainland Ringette League U19AA team and the top open A team in B.C. His daughter Jessica was a key defensive player for the Thunder during the 2012-13 campaign. Lipsett will also be leading Team BC as head coach this coming February at the 2015
Canada Winter Games. The National Ringette League consists of 16 teams from across Canada — four in the Western Conference and 12 in the East. The Ottawa Ice are the defending NRL champions. The Thunder took league honours in 2012. “This past season, B.C. Thunder took the time to rebuild the strength of their franchise and we are very pleased to have them back on the ice,” said Frances Losier, Ringette Canada’s Director of High Performance and Events. “We look forward to seeing high caliber ringette being played in BC for many years to come.” Meanwhile, Delta’s Chelsea Izzy is among five national recipients of Ringette Canada’s Agnes Jacks Scholarship. The award is presented to ringette players, coaches and/or officials who have demonstrated a strong academic performance and a commitment to the sport of ringette. Recipients receive a $1,000 scholarship towards post-secondary education and also a scholarship award certificate recognizing their achievements.
