program to help the children. “It kind of broke our hearts because it’s such a poor, poor neighbourhood,” said Steve Kovacs. “The hardest thing that really broke our hearts is just how happy they are (despite having very little).” The two couples were part of a larger group, organized by Kovacs, that traveled to Kamuli.

Terry Wile is doing what he loves and raising money for B.C. Children’s Hospital at the same time. The cashier at Save-OnFoods in Ladner plays his guitar and sings outside the store usually about three times a week before work and accepts donations for the hospital. “I really do love performing for Ladner,” he says, adding the community is very generous. Wile says he has a love for playing music. He says he plays by ear and doesn’t know how to read music at all. He’ll take a song, try and sing to it, get a basic melody going and then do it his own way. “I’ve been doing that since I was probably 15, 16 years old. I just picked up different chords from people and evolved into this.”

AFRICA from page 1 The group, which included several other local residents, was there to build a well and clean water system at the Good Samaritan Community Nursery and Primary School. The school is home to 350 children and, until last year, had no source of clean drinking water. “The children were the poorest of the poor,” said Trudy Rosler. In addition to a lack of clean drinking water, many of the children did not even have shoes, with some walking up to five kilo-
meters each day to attend school, where they would learn sitting on a dirt floor due to a lack of benches and desks. Despite that, Rosler said, the students were eager and disciplined. While working in the village, some of the volunteers built benches for the close to 400 students. The aim of the sponsorship program is to ensure that each child gets a chance at a proper education and a better life. “The only way to fight poverty is through education,” Rosler said. “That’s

the only way to get out of it.” The two couples teamed up with Love Global Foundation to start a child sponsorship program to help the children of Kamuli. A $30 a month sponsorship donation will ensure the child has a school uniform, basic school supplies and covers tuition. The tuition, in turn, helps pay teacher salaries. While the Roslers have been sponsoring children in Third World countries since the 1970s, a recent health scare inspired Trudy Rosler to do more. In 2008, she spent four months in the hospital and
nearly died after contracting Cryptococcus, an extremely rare fungal infection. She had meningitis, a mass in her throat and two masses on her left lung. She was treated and released from hospital, but last year the disease resurfaced and she spent six weeks in hospital. There is no cure and the disease can be fatal. The illness is caused by Cryptococcus gattii, a tropical fungus that is believed to have started appearing on Vancouver Island due to climate change. The infection, which can affect the lungs and nervous system, is caused by inhaling yeasts
or spores of the fungus. When the couple made the decision to go on the trip to Kamuli, Rosler’s kidneys were close to shutting down. “Seeing their need, and knowing my illness, there is no cure, I just want to give back for all the blessings I received in my life and make my remaining time count to be of help to the children of Kamuli, as well as my family and the people around me,” she said. For more on sponsoring a child, visit www.yourchildsponsorship.com, or call Trudy Rosler at 604-9439875 or Steve and Linda Kovacs at 604-952-7663.

Mattoo to challenge the status quo on council 34-year resident declares candidacy for civic election Inspired by a deep commitment to Delta and a disdain for top-down politics, Peter S. Mattoo announced the launch of his grassroots candidacy for Delta council Wednesday. As a husband, father, grandfather, and retired tradesman and union member, Mattoo said he has a genuine interest in shaking up Delta’s political scene by challenging the status quo. The 34-year Delta resident said electoral politics have led to a stagnant state at municipal hall. “My motivation for running is to make a positive impact on the future of Delta, and the only way I can do that is to speak freely about the issues that matter to residents,” said Mattoo. “The current mayor and council make reelection their main reason for running, and I am not driven by politics.” Mattoo has identified a range of issues he said aren’t being addressed by the current administration, including:
• A lack of affordable housing options for young people to settle in the community they grew up in. • Development without foresight or innovation, discouraging new residents and businesses from settling in Delta. • A mayor and council that operate municipal hall by dictating to Delta, not governing on behalf of residents. Mattoo, who made note of the fact he’s Delta’s first declared candidate of South Asian heritage, said he is determined to be a candidate that brings forth ideas and issues from the doorsteps, and challenges political rhetoric and partisan decision making. “Delta has a long-standing and popular mayor, but without independent voices to work with her on council, we will not be able to evolve as a community. It is time to stand up for those
Peter S. Mattoo that are not being listened to at municipal hall.” Mattoo brings the number of candidates in the race for six councillor seats to 11. All five incumbents — Sylvia Bishop, Robert Campbell, Jeannie Kanakos, Bruce McDonald and Ian Paton — are seeking re-election along with Rod Binder, Heather King, Lori Mayhew, Peter van der Velden and Nicholas Wong. The municipal election will be held Nov. 15.

Tsawwassen’s Connor Nelson won first place overall at the Youth Talent Search BC 2014 finals last Saturday. “It felt really amazing. It meant that my hard work ... just paid off,” said the 13year-old. Nelson won with his soulful rendition of Etta James’ I’d Rather Go Blind over 24 other finalists from around the Lower Mainland. Nelson said he picked that tune because it’s an R&B song that really shows off his voice. The finalists earned their spots, first through preliminary rounds that took place exclusively through YouTube, and then through three semi-final rounds held in Port Moody, Richmond and Vancouver in the spring. TED MURPHY
MURPHY’S LAW They are big shoes indeed. I knew Jim Cessford wasn’t going to be Delta’s police chief forever, but last week’s announcement that he’ll be retiring early next year still caught me off guard. Cessford has been Delta’s top cop since 1995, which makes him the longest-serving police chief in Canada. He’s actually held that title for a few years now because I can remember joking with him a while back, acting confused over whether he was the longest serving or simply the oldest chief in the country. The fact you can have some fun at his expense — and, don’t worry, he gives as good as he gets in those kinds of exchanges — speaks volumes about his character and is one of the traits I’ll remember most about his time leading the department. Given policing is often no laughing matter, Cessford can also be deadly serious when the occasion calls for it. You could tell by the look on his face and the gravity in his voice that many cases, particularly those where a life had been lost, touched him deeply over the years. He often got personally involved, reaching out to victims’ families, not in some sort of contrived PR gesture, but with a genuine sense of caring. Cessford is exactly what you’d want a police officer, and a police chief, to be, combining a no nonsense law and order side with hefty doses of compassion, humility and humour. He’s in a position of great authority, which he takes seriously, but at the same time he doesn’t take himself too seriously. The office of police chief carries with it a certain cachet, but Cessford is far from an ivory tower type of guy. He relates to anyone and everyone, treating each with the respect he’d want to be accorded. He has a knack of knowing, like any good officer, when to push and when to pull back. I think it’s a credit to Cessford that a department that serves 100,000 people still provides a very personal touch. Its no-call-too-small policy makes every resident feel they’re important, that their voice has value and their concerns are respected. That’s not an easy standard to sustain while policing in a major metropolitan area, but thanks to the chief’s leadership that small town approach has been maintained. Twenty years as chief in one place is an eternity in police years, so we’ve been fortunate to have had Jim Cessford for such a long time. His fingerprints are all over this community and his impact will be felt long after he retires. His successor has big shoes to fill.
What we’re watching, and how we do it, changing in a hurry IAN ROBERTSON
COMMUNITY COMMENT Fall is upon us and perhaps you are shifting to watching TV shows again. Perhaps you have bought a new TV. Perhaps you have received invitations and presentations about all the new channels and technology that’s available. Alternately, you may be like our house — large enough TV, happy with a limited number of channels and wanting to simply watch a few favourite programs. We watch about 15 hours of TV per week, a lot on weekends when Knowledge Network brings on the dramas. Well, change is afoot. If a Delta Cable customer, you are being invited to throw out that old technology and go for High Definition TV (HDTV). Of course, that requires a new “box” and added costs. But just think, they can offer
you 165 channels! Last January I got a letter telling me about all the improvements that will be coming. Frankly, the only thing that changed was a 13 per cent increase in cable fees. Fear not, the Canadian Radio and Television Commission (better known as the CRTC) has just conducted hearings about where TV is going, and one suggestion is the call for a “Skinny Basic” package, along with letting you and I choose which channels we want beyond that. This hearing and its subsequent rulings will affect you regardless if you get TV from Delta, Shaw or Telus, all of which are regulated by the CRTC. Some hope this will reduce the cost of basic cable, while at least some suppliers say many specialty channels will be cancelled. Even Prime Minister Stephen Harper weighed in recently hoping for pick-and-pay TV, saying, “[Let] Canadians chose to pay for the TV channels they actually want.” Many say the process won’t be that different and costs will not decrease. More fundamental change is

happening, and fast. Cable TV subscribers are decreasing, Pay TV, which was growing, is now declining. And, imagine, fewer homes have TVs! All of this is due to folks, especially younger folks, watching what they want on their computers, tablets and smart phones. Netflix has now grown so much that up to 40 per cent of prime time Internet traffic is taken by its programs! Accompanying this is the disappearance of the traditional wired phone line. In Canada, over 40 per cent have already abandoned the old phone from Telus or Bell, and another 49 per cent plan to do so — all to convert to cellular phones. As for me? Not long ago I spoke with Telus about being offered a deal on my home phone. Like magic, the $40 per month phone bill went to $10. We have two residences where we need to deal with all of this. We will eliminate cable in one in favour of computersourced programs found on the Internet. In our other place will be a new smart TV that will be wirelessly connected to the Internet to provide the programs we want. Bye bye, cable TV!

Port proud of its record
Editor: Re: Ship pollution deserves port action, letter to the editor, Sept. 10 The letter suggests Port Metro Vancouver is derelict in its responsibility to address the environmental impacts of port operations. Port Metro Vancouver regularly engages with the public, which Roger Emsley knows as a member of one of Port Metro Vancouver’s community liaison committees. Clearly, port operations have an impact on the environment like other industrial and transportation activities, but it is the legislated mandate of Canadian port authorities to manage operations in a sustainable way and with regard for local communities. Port Metro Vancouver incorporates sustainability
practices into every part of our operations, requiring a relentless focus and collaboration with stakeholders. In partnership with other regional ports, Environment Canada and Metro Vancouver, Port Metro Vancouver conducts air quality monitoring and detailed emissions inventories, publishing progress annually. In fact, smog-forming pollutants do not include CO2, port-related sources of pollutants are decreasing — as reported in Metro Vancouver’s 2012 Caring for the Air report — and we are on track to meet an ambitious 2015 target to reduce diesel particulate matter emissions per tonne of cargo by 75 per cent. Our team of environmental experts is the first to be established by a North
American port, and our programs have been internationally recognized as ecologically progressive. For example, participation in our Ecoaction Program, which offers incentives for ships using cleaner-burning fuels, has increased by 55 per cent since 2011. Our growing cruise ship shore power program — now being considered for container ships — lets ships turn off their diesel generators in favour of using the land-based electric power grid. Shore power connections have increased by 134 per cent in five years, reducing potential greenhouse gases by 8,400 tonnes. Peter Xotta Vice President, Planning and Operations Port Metro Vancouver

Deal reached on the backs of teachers Editor: Re: Deal was there the whole time, Murphy’s Law, Sept. 19 Are you kidding? Anyone who thinks this agreement, starring the twinklingeyed Christy Clark and her Liberals, could have been “consummated before any classes were missed” has truly missed the entire play. The government goaded the teachers’ union into job action by not negotiating appropriately for a year, took 10 per cent of their salaries for weeks even though the teachers had not, in fact, ceased in any of their actual teaching, locked the teachers out in June, and then pushed the teachers to continue to strike three more weeks in
September because they refused to negotiate responsibly over the summer. And you think the deal could have been done before any school time was lost? They had to make sure they had enough of the teachers’ wages first, and then with those hundreds of millions saved, they could, mid-September, dramatically make a climactic move that would see a reworking of an old deal for supporting special needs and teachers only just getting back their lost wages hidden in a deal that made it look like they were getting some sort of increase. (Hello? It’s the money they just lost!) This increase is still at a percentage below the cost of inflation and is still the
second lowest salary for teachers in all of Canada in a province that has the second highest cost of living. It was never going to result in “higher taxes, more debt or a reduction in services” and only fear mongering by Mike de Jong when he threatened this to fund education. The government knew all along it would have the funds to negotiate responsibly with, soon enough. The play is over now. It was a spectacular farce, in case you didn’t get it, although a financial and emotional tragedy for many teachers. It will most likely be remounted in about five years when the contract is up again. Johane Meehan

Celebrating a decade of access It was 10 years ago today the stairs at Fred Gingell Park finally opened Editor: In the midst of the current protest and politics that pre-occupy your reporters, and seem to embroil much of Tsawwassen, here is a nod to one of the good news stories that had great outcomes for everyone. Today, Friday, Sept. 26, is the 10th anniversary of the official opening of the stairs that provide public access to Tsawwassen Beach. It is hard to believe a decade has come and gone in that time. The trail down to the beach is most likely one of the most popular and used public amenities in all of Delta, giving a tremendous route down to a one of the most beautiful western beaches in Canada. It must also have one of

visitors going on picnics. It is interesting now to think back and remember the opposition and bitter controversy that surrounded gaining this access, and this resource, and how it divided the community for a time. Happily, that is now just
a memory for some, while most users today are not even aware that it was a very big deal. At the same time, we encourage everyone to get out on the trail and celebrate the 10th anniversary; build up a sweat, go for a walk on the beach and never take for granted that you can do this freely. Delta firefighters were on hand in Vancouver last week for the groundbreaking ceremony for a new Burn Fund Centre. “It was a great event,” said Brad Wilson, president of the Delta Firefighters union IAFF Local 1763. Delta firefighters donated $100,000 to the $13.1million project, which has been 13 years in the making. “I have never been more proud of the firefighters of our province than I am today,” said Michael Hurley, president of the Burn Fund. “You have certainly shown firsthand what perseverance, integrity and honour can accomplish.” The centre, which will be constructed at 23rd Avenue and Main Street,

will include eight furnished short-term-stay suites for families of burn patients as well as a communal great room, library, outdoor spaces and family kitchen. The Burn Fund identified a shortfall in accommodation for burn and trauma patients and their family caregivers, which means patients’ health may be compromised when they have to return home sooner than medically advised, or live in accommodations not suited to recovery from a burn or trauma injury. The province provided $4 million in funding for the centre, while the Jack & Darlene Poole Foundation donated $2.5 million for construction and creating an endowment fund. “Having the centre acces-

sible to burn and trauma patients from throughout the province, and at no cost to them or their families, shows the support necessary to empower survivors in their recovery journey,” said Vancouver False Creek MLA Sam Sullivan, who appeared on behalf of Health Minister Terry Lake. The centre will also house 3,100 square feet of ground level retail space — a social venture to help sustain the building’s operations. Construction is slated to begin in November. With 90 per cent of the needed funds already secured, the push is on the raise the last $1 million. Donations can be made online at www.burnfund.org or by calling 604-436-5617.

Time for conversation Is it time to have the conversation? Parents, have you had the conversation with your children? You know that one that speaks to the life altering changes and the impact it has on significant others in your life. No, I’m not speaking about the sex talk, though that may very well be the timely conversation for your present family realities. I’m talking about the other end of the age, time and space, social impact continuum. The time of life when body, mind and quality of life begins to show the wear and tear of a life fully lived. The conversations that feel too vulnerable to mention. Where fierce independence begins to give way to care, support and eventually dependence on others to continue to allow quality of life its fullest expression for each and every day possible.
It’s not always an easy conversation or ongoing engagement with your spouse, adult children or other significant people in your life. Sometimes physical or emotional distance is a barrier between family members. Yet it is so very important. I encourage you to open that conversation with your adult children, find a trusted friend, a minister or pastor who can come alongside you and help to negotiate the layers of personal, physical, medical, residential, legal and financial possibilities. There are amazing resources available. Our immediate and extended family have just been thrust into the midst of this reality and if you haven’t been talking about and actively preparing for the changes that are inevitable, the impact can be traumatic. But it doesn’t have to be.

Biologists to lead Nature Beach Tour in Boundary Bay Scattered along the local coast, you can find unique sand ecosystems that are rare in B.C. One site with coastal sand in Delta is located in Boundary Bay. To raise awareness of this unusual ecosystem, the South Coast Conservation Program is hosting a free beach walking tour next weekend. Coastal sand ecosystems are a combination of sand and plants, with the plants often scattered in patches on beaches, spits and dunes. Tides, storm surges and ocean spray help build and maintain these ecosystems. The plant communities that result support a wide range of rare and interesting animal life. Coastal sand ecosystems are important as they contribute to B.C.’s biodiversity, provide recreational benefits for outdoor enthusiasts and buffer inland areas from flooding or storm damage. However, these areas are fragile and

The Nature Beach Tour takes place on Sunday, Oct. 5 at 11 a.m. Knowledgeable biologists will introduce the basics of coastal sand ecosystems, teach about the common and uncommon plants and animals, and answer questions about coastal sand stewardship in the Boundary Bay Area. Program will help residents prepare for an emergency The Delta Police Department wants to help local residents be prepared for any emergency. Starting Oct. 1, the department, in conjunction with the municipality, the Delta Fire Department and the Delta school board, will be teaching a Neighbourhood Emergency Preparedness Program. The program aims to teach participants how to become personally prepared to take care of themselves for a minimum of 72 hours following a disaster. “It will teach neighbours how to plan and train as a
neighbourhood to respond safely and effectively as organized teams during a disaster,” said Sgt. Sarah Swallow. Topics covered include: personal preparedness, utilities and fire suppression, transportation and communication, emergency first aid and leadership. The course costs $30 and will run on Wednesday nights from 7 to 9 p.m. starting Oct. 1 at the Delta Manor Education Centre in Ladner (4750-57th St.). Earthwise program helps locals harvest rainwater Conserve precious resource because it’s not endless Earthwise Society announced this week it has received $6,000 from Vancity toward its Rain Harvest program. The program aims to raise awareness about water cycles and climate change and show residents how they can help by conserving, collecting and re-using water. At times, water may seems like an endless resource and water use in Canada has increased over the last two decades. However, with climate change, summer drought and winter storms expected to increase in severity in coming years, that means less water in the summer when we need it most, and a greater risk of flooding during the winter. Earthwise’s Rain Harvest program aims to get people thinking about the value and fragility of our fresh water supplies. It will include demonstrations of landscape techniques to

Nine students of artist Lennart Osterlind, who is a member of the South Delta Artists Guild, will receive awards from the Federation of Canadian Artists tomorrow at RiverFest at the Fraser River Discovery Centre.
Local art students to be recognized BY
NOREEN M. FAIRWEATHER Optimist contributor
South Delta artist Lennart Osterlind will enjoy the best reward any teacher can earn tomorrow when nine of his students receive awards from the Federation of Canadian Artists. The presentations will be made at the Fraser River Discovery Centre in New Westminster as part of the day-long 2014 RiverFest celebration. Five of the nine award winners — Sarah Johnson, Annika Oudendijk, Nick Kim, Vladislav Korolev and So-Lin Kim — live in South Delta, while the other four are students at Purpose Independent Secondary in New West. “I really enjoyed being with these young people and their teacher, Heather Hancock, who is so very nice to work with,” says Osterlind, who taught daily for two months at the River Market Mall at Westminster Quay. Osterlind, whose work often hangs in Gallery 1710 in Tsawwassen, is one of several art teachers among the membership of the South Delta Artists Guild, offering his expertise through workshops and classes. The Swedish-born Osterlind was 11 when his family moved to South Africa, where he was educated and first began to explore the world of art. Returning to Europe as an adult, he studied art in Sweden and Switzerland before embarking on an advertising career in the Middle East. He immigrated to Canada with his wife
Margareta in 1968 and began a new career in insurance. Art took a back seat until one day a second-hand oil painting set suddenly tweaked his dormant creativity and art once again became an important part of his life. He joined the South Delta Artists Guild in 2000 and became part of the team, along with teacher Julie Lymburner, that instituted the annual art/writing exhibition that sees students from South Delta Secondary show work each January in Gallery 1710. He began teaching drawing and painting to students at the South Delta Recreation Centre and then started tutoring in New Westminster. Osterlind is also responsible for a special artistic bonus to the 2014 RiverFest. At the 2013 festival, he met scientist Bernard Peucker-Ehrenbrink from Boston’s Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute, whose has studied the Fraser River for years. As the result of mutual interest, great volunteer involvement and generous financial support from Century Group, a book with accompanying CD has just been published in time for sale at the festival. Fraser River: The Living, Working Spirit includes scientific research, art and poetry. The art comes from students and professional artists, and the poems from around the world. Proceeds from the $25 price tag will go towards helping students with special needs. The 2014 RiverFest runs from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, visit www. fraserriverdiscovery.org.

Stroll in southern England
Walk around Battle of Hastings area includes mix of typically English weather BY
COLLEEN FRIESEN
Optimist contributor
For the most part, it went as planned. It was simple really. We would do a three-day walk around the Battle of Hastings area in the south of England. We’d stroll over rolling green dales, pop into a castle or two where we’d learn the history about the Battle of 1066 (history that I knew was important, but the details of which I had somehow neglected to fully absorb during my spotty education). I pictured sunny little September picnics before checking into the next town’s B & B. VisitBritain helped set the plan in motion: an afternoon train from London, a quick cab to the nearby town of Battle, a little history lesson by walking around the Battle Abbey site, an early dinner and then, for the next two days, some
good and proper tramping through the English countryside. And indeed, we stood on the battlefield, listened to the audio guide, read the signs, walked through the museum, and, yes, I felt like I finally understood what had taken place and why it was so historically significant. (To sum up, the Normans beat the AngloSaxons, forever changing laws and adding heaps of castles to the mix.) There was just one thing... the weather was utterly, and fantastically, miserable. As we exited the cab at the Abbey, our umbrellas were immediately rendered useless by the howling wind. Rain swirled up our noses, leaving us senseless and gasping. Our silly light shoes were soaked. Why, oh why, did we think we wouldn’t need good hiking boots? That night, the rain con-

tinued to slop out of the dark, spinning and spewing on blistering winds. We hunkered down in the Lilac Tree Lodge, taking solace by drinking tea and eating lovely oh-so-moist almond-sprinkled cake. The wind continued to batter the walls, providing the soundtrack to that long ago war. When morning dawned, the sodden garden flowers
of the night before were transformed. Besotted with sunshine, we immediately got lost. After a heart-thudding ascent back to the start of the trail, we paid strict attention to the instructions found in Nick Brown’s book, The 1066 Country Walk. It was not the fault of his excellent descriptions, but rather our collective inability to note the obvi-
ous. Chastised by our error, we began reading more closely and the rest of the morning’s walk went as written. So much so, that we managed to meet the author within five minutes of the agreed upon time of noon in a tiny lane near Westfield. We’d bashed off close to eight kilometres and had another eight to go. With Brown at our side, we cruised through stubbled fields and over stiles. Perfect white puffy clouds blew overhead, birds twittered and streams rushed. We checked into The Strand in Winchelsea, an inn dating back to the 13th century. Our final day dawned as bright as the day before. We walked past the flaming yellow gorse, the baa-ing sheep and picked the last of the season’s blackberries as we headed to Rye, a city with more historically listed buildings than any other town in England.
In fact, the entire town is listed. If it weren’t enough that we were able to walk through every period of architectural history and imbibe a beer at a pub that’s had continuous patronage for the last 600 years, we also discovered that Rye was (I hope!) the only town in Ye Olde England that has the gibbetted remains of a long-ago criminal in their town hall attic (gibbetting, in case, like me, you also missed that bit of historical trivia, was the act of caging an-already-dead-by-hanging corpse so it could rot publicly as a further deterrent to would-be criminals). It worked. In spite of the dearth of traffic, we were careful to obey each and every crosswalk signal. Point Roberts has new scenic loop
The Point Roberts Conservation Society is inviting its neighbours to the north to venture across the line to experience a new scenic loop. The loop, which is sponsored by the society, begins just south of the international border on Tyee Drive where a view corridor stretches over 100 kilometres to
the Olympic Mountains. Then follow the signs to view the majestic APA Road tree canopy in all its glory before the giant maples drop their leaves. All four corners of the American peninsula contain a unique county park so the conservation society is encouraging visitors to venture off the loop here
and there for some bonus fun. The salmon are running now, which will increase the odds of seeing an orca while walking on the beach at Lighthouse Park. And those who haven’t walked the trails (even the shortest one) at Lily Point Park are really missing out, according to the conservation society.

Estate Planning is an essential part of Wealth Management. An estate plan is just a documented expression of your wishes and needs to be properly structured to simplify the distribution of your estate. Working with a Financial Advisor can help maximize the value of your estate. 1. Your Will is the cornerstone of your estate plan. Using a lawyer or notary ensures that your will is legal. 2. If you have stocks with a large capital gain and want to make a donation to charity, consider donating the shares instead of selling the shares and donating cash. You will save yourself the tax liability on the capital gain. 3. Name beneficiaries wherever possible. This will not help with the tax liability at death, but will avoid probate on those assets and they can be given without waiting for the estate to settle. Examples are RRSP’s, RRIF’s, TFSA’s, segregated funds, annuities and life insurance policies. 4. Avoid owning your home joint with a child. There is probate on the value of your home, but no tax liability. If the home is not the child’s principal residence, the sale could attract capital gains tax on their “portion”. As well, if the child is sued or involved in a divorce, your home could form part of their assets and could be attached to a settlement. Additionally, you could decide you want to move and the child could decide not to sign the papers. 5. If it is affordable, consider gifting cash to your beneficiaries while you are alive. This is the most efficient way to transfer wealth to the next generation – with the added benefit that you get the enjoyment of seeing them use the additional wealth. 6. Ensure you name an Executor who is capable of performing their duties. This is a pretty complicated, time consuming job. Make allowance in your will for the Executor to be compensated for their time and effort. We at South Delta Financial Group are well versed in estate and wealth planning strategies. We work with many different accountants and lawyers in the community to ensure our clients’ wishes are achievable and properly set up. Please call us if you have any questions or we can help in any way.
So nice to come home to. It’s peace of mind for you and your loved ones knowing that you are safe, not alone and enjoying the independence you’ve always had. Changing your address not your life, is what it’s all about.

Schuss named NLL top rookie Ladner lacrosse standout recognized for his outstanding freshman season with Minnesota Swarm
Logan Schuss more than lived up to the hype as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2013 National Lacrosse League draft. On Sunday, the 23-year-old from Ladner was named the NLL rookie-of-the-year thanks to his impressive 2014 campaign with the Minnesota Swarm. Schuss led all freshman with 36 goals and 73 points. His goal total was good enough for sixth in the league while his point total ranked him 16th overall and second on his team. Three times, the former Delta Islander standout was named NLL Rookie of the Month. He beat out Colorado Mammoth goaltender Dillon Ward and former Logan Coquitlam junior standout Robert Church. “Logan adjusted well to the NLL and proved that he can be a big-time player in this league,” said Minnesota owner and governor John
Arlotta. “He carries on a tradition along with many other first overall picks who went on to win rookie-of-the-year. The Swarm organization congratulates Logan on a great start to his NLL career.” Schuss was also named to the league’s all-rookie team. He is coming off a busy summer that saw him play pro field lacrosse for Ohio Machine of the Major Lacrosse League and the Western Lacrosse Association’s New West Salmonbellies. The former Ohio State University field lacrosse standout finished 14th in league scoring for the Machine with 38 points in 12 games, includSchuss ing 28 goals. He also thrived in the summer box league, producing 27 points in eight games. He also added 20 more in just four playoff appearances. The Swarm opens the 2015 NLL season on
Jan. 3 against Colorado. The Mammoth’s line-up will include Schuss’ former Islander teammate Eli McLaughlin who was selected fourth overall in Monday’s league draft. The two were teammates back in 2012 when the Islanders reached the B.C. Junior “A” Lacrosse League championship series for the first time in franchise history. For the past two seasons, McLaughlin has been dealt by the Islanders at the league deadline — first to New West in 2013 and Coquitlam this past summer. Both times he helped his team reach the Minto Cup final. He finished third in regular season scoring with 81 points and led the Adanacs with 22 points in the Minto Cup final series loss to Six Nations. “It’s been a dream ever since I started playing to play professional lacrosse,” said McLaughlin. “I’ve been to one game in Colorado. It’s a great atmosphere.”

Ladner Masters Fastball Club rolled to a perfect record to capture the 55 and over division at the NAFA West World Series in Carson City, Nevada. Facing tough competition in the eight team division, with entries from California, Oregon and Washington, Ladner proved it can still play the game at a high level. The boys produced five straight victories, capped by a 9-4 triumph over Seattle Fastpitch in the championship game.
South Delta Basketball Association producing some promising talent With the South Delta Basketball Association set to launch another season this weekend, you only to have to look as far as the local high school teams to see the quality of talent that has come through the grassroots program in recent years. The Delta Pacers senior boys team will be led by Grade 12s Mackenzie Falk and Eric Lister — both SDBA alumni. The Ladner school also features a deep and talented Grade 10 class that could be among the best junior boys teams in the province this coming season, should no one make the early jump to the senior level. The players include Jas Singh, Jake Cowley, Conor Edgson, Dylan Bubel and Cam Ratslaff. Singh and Cowley are coming off a busy summer playing with the Richmond Olympic Oval based DRIVE Academy on the AAU circuit south of the border. The pair of 6-foot-7 standouts had key roles in some epic wins. The U15 club became the first Canadian team to defeat Washington State’s premier club — Seattle Rotary — in any age level. The following week saw DRIVE advance to the quarter-finals in the Platinum Division at a tournament in Anaheim before a heartbreaking loss in double overtime. The team moved on to another event in Las Vegas where it again made a run to the quarter-finals before bowing out to one of the top rated clubs in the U.S. — Wisconsin Playground.
In the previous game, DRIVE upset Mac Irvine Fire of Chicago, the former club team of 2014 NBA Draft No. 2 overall pick Jabari Parker. DRIVE owner Pasha Bains described the win as the biggest in the history of the academy. The Anaheim and Vegas tourneys each featured over 150 teams from across the United States competing in the U15 division. Several NCAA Division One coaches were in attendance to watch these big games including Seattle University, Gonzaga and Santa Clara. Seattle invited both Singh and Cowley to take part in their Elite Camp in August where they were the only Canadians among 20 players from Grades 10-to-12. They were put through drills and were given a tour of the campus by current Seattle U players. Basketball has become a primary sport for many of South Delta’s youth. They see the success of others and it has them believing that they too can achieve great things. Cowley’s older brother Ryan is set for his freshman season Brandon University. SDBA gives kids a great introduction to the sport, along with the affordability to parents. Boys and girls can start as early as Grade 2 but can join at any point up to Grade 12, regardless of skill level. There is still time to register. Steelers finally solve Ice Hawks goalie The Grandview Steelers accomplished what five other Pacific Junior Hockey League teams couldn’t do. Beat Jacob Latrace. The impressive 17-year-old netminder suffered his first defeat as a Delta Ice Hawk, a 3-1 setback on Tuesday night at Sungod Arena. Dating back to a pair of AP appearances last season, Latrace entered the tilt with a 5-0 record while surrendering just six goals on 167 shots. He still earned third star honours in a losing cause as the Steelers snapped a 1-1 tie on an early second period power play goal. An empty netter with 1:10 remaining sealed the win. The Hawks had opened the scoring at the
4:28 mark of the first period on a goal from rookie Tyson Fraser. Veteran Brent Chreptyk earned an assist on the play and has now factored in on all but three of Delta’s 11 goals in five games, as a lack of production has become an early season concern for the club. Perhaps the offence will get a spark when the Hawks make their long awaited return to the Ladner Leisure Centre Tuesday against the Aldergrove Kodiaks at 7:35 p.m. Delta managed just a 1-4 record at Sungod, dating back to last year’s quarter-final playoff series loss to the North Vancouver Wolf Pack. The Ice Hawks also visit the Wolf Pack on Saturday night.
