Municipal hall continues to implement recycling initiatives as annual clean-up week volumes on the rise BY

The Corporation of Delta continues to implement programs aimed at keeping waste out of the landfill as this year’s Spring Clean-Up saw another increase in the volume of materials collected. A recent municipal engineering department report notes the popular annual clean-up handled approximately 1,300 tonnes of additional garbage, an increase of

five per cent from 2013. The report notes the municipality’s collection contractor, Remple Disposal, continues to do a good job ensuring materials are picked up on designated days and that there were minimal calls from residents related to the clean-up this year. Delta has undertaken several measures to reduce items ending up in the waste stream, including a mattress voucher program that has grown in its second year.

Launched last year, the program allows residents to take up to two mattresses to the Vancouver Landfill for recycling at no charge. Participation should continue to increase as residents become more aware of the program, the report notes, adding 37 per cent more vouchers were issued from January to August this year compared to the same period last year. The federal government is finally showing concern about the contentious proposal to install radio transmission towers in Point Roberts, but recent statements could be too little, too late. In a recent letter to Mayor Lois Jackson, Industry Minister James Moore noted he met with members of the Cross Border Coalition to Stop the Radio Towers in August and understands their concerns, which have also been conveyed by DeltaRichmond East MP KerryLynne Findlay. “To be clear, Industry Canada has articulated the concerns raised by Tsawwassen residents, particularly as they relate to blanketing interference, to Federal Communications Commission (FCC) officials ensuring that nearby homes are not subject to unwanted disruptions,” Moore stated. The Consulate General of Canada in Seattle has also “raised Canada’s frustrations” with Washington state officials, noted Moore, who added he has personally spoken to Bruce Heyman, ambassador for the United Sates to Canada in Ottawa, to raise “Canada’s concern and our expectations that cross-border Canadian residents are included in the county and FCC decision making.” The letter by Moore, who has also asked the ambassador to visit the area, is the strongest position taken in public yet regarding the contentious radio towers proposal. Moore and Findlay had been criticized

by opponents of the proposal for not speaking out on the issue or taking it up with the FCC in the U.S. The mayor and council recently wrote to Moore reiterating Delta’s concerns, mentioning a recent citizens’ petition to the House of Commons and asking for the government to intervene. Delta has also asked that an Industry Canada representative speak at an upcoming public hearing in Whatcom County, but there’s no indication the federal government will to go that far. BBC Broadcasting Inc. wants to construct five 45-metre (150-foot) steel towers at an undeveloped lot on McKenzie Way, about 330 metres from the Tsawwassen border. The towers would transmit South Asian radio station KRPI, AM 1550, which

currently broadcasts from studios in Richmond to a Lower Mainland audience. The broadcaster currently uses antenna in Ferndale, Wash., but wants to move them closer and have a stronger 50,000-watt, allday signal. The FCC granted approval but a permit is still required by the county, which is recommending rezoning approval. In a presentation to council this summer, Findlay recommended residents focus their efforts at the county level, noting the FCC indicated it was aware of Tsawwassen and took the community into consideration when reviewing the application. The county public hearing is set to begin Oct. 27 and is scheduled for several days. While it appears the hearing could be the last stand for opponents, it’s

not clear if the station’s troubles with the CRTC in this country could change things. The Canadian broadcasting authority ordered the station and two other Lower Mainland South Asian broadcasters to a show cause hearing set for next Wednesday in Quebec on their practice of broadcasting from the U.S. into Canada. The station could be ordered “to cease and desist operating a broadcasting undertaking at Richmond, British Columbia, or elsewhere in Canada, except in compliance with the Broadcast Act.” In a lengthy letter two weeks ago to the CRTC, station COO Jasbir Singh Badh offered some solutions. Several opponents of the Point Roberts application have filed as interveners in the CRTC proceeding.

with the Cougar Creek Steamkeepers by placing cigarette waste receptacles at several bus stops in North Delta. The goal is to reduce cigarette butt litter as well as help reduce pollution near waterways.

Delta has also begun another pilot project with new recycling stations placed at the Ladner Leisure Centre, Sungod Recreation Centre and municipal hall. The stations allow facility users to separate food

Delta-Richmond East MP Kerry-Lynne Findlay announced yesterday she would represent her constituents at the Whatcom County public hearing on the proposed Point Roberts radio towers. “This issue has caused serious concern among residents of our community,” said Findlay, the minister of national revenue. “The people of Delta deserve to have their voices heard by the American authorities responsible for decisions on this proposal. As member of Parliament for Delta-Richmond East, I intend to convey the messages I have received to the hearing examiner in Whatcom County so that their deliberations may be fully informed.” The Whatcom County hearing is scheduled to run from Oct. 27 to Nov. 3 at the Whatcom County courthouse in Bellingham. Trustee Burke seeking re-election

We are excited to introduce a wide

First-term trustee Donna Burke announced this week she is seeking re-election to the Delta board of education next month. Prior to her election in 2011, Burke, a parent of two teens, was Delta District PAC chair from 2006 to 2010. When elected, she was working with Boys and Girls Clubs of South Coast B.C., but left to devote more time to her trustee duties. Burke is a volunteer on the board of directors for Reach Child and Youth Development Society.

“My work on the board of education and with Reach frequently gets me out into the schools and wider community, and I wouldn’t have it any other way,” she said. “It is a privilege to work with people who are committed to ensuring all Delta students achieve their full potential.” Burke said underfunding of the education system is the most challenging part of working in a school district. “Our board lobbies the government at every opportunity and our leaders do their utmost to find ways to

sustain our programs.” Burke said she is especially impressed by the leadership of board chair Laura Dixon and the two trustees that were also elected for the first time in 2011. Burke said she is hoping a silver lining from the recent labour dispute will be a heightened awareness of the importance of a strong public education system. Burke believes that public education should matter to everyone — even if they don’t have children in the

Life-long Delta resident Jennifer Thoss has announced her candidacy for Delta council in November’s municipal election. A two-time UBC graduate, Thoss has worked in education for well over a decade, with two years as the education coordinator for Tsawwassen First Nation, two years teaching special needs in Vancouver, as well as five years abroad teaching and volunteering in Japan, Nepal, Cambodia and India.

Thoss has served on Delta’s parks, recreation and culture commission and has been on the heritage sdvisory commission since 2007. Thoss Jennifer said Delta is approaching a crossroads in terms of development and sustainability and has decided this is the time for her to offer her voice for the people of Delta whose way of life is

being threatened. She said finding a way to promote and preserve Delta’s unique character and its natural environment while encouraging economic Thoss growth will be the challenge for the next four years. Sustainability and the protection the agricultural “greenbelt” is one of Thoss’ top priorities. She points to arable land as not only a buffer for urban sprawl, but

also as a key element of the Pacific Flyway, which has established Delta as a major destination for many migratory birds. Thoss said some of the current issues that are important to her include alleviating traffic congestion, reinstating seamless transit from South Delta to Vancouver (bring back the 601), and invigorating and protecting local businesses with an aggressive buy and grow local campaign. Colourful collection of Cops for Cancer riders roll into town

JESSICA KERR

Cops for Cancer Tour de Valley made stops in South Delta last Thursday as the team wound up this year’s ride. The annual trek, which sees law enforcement and emergency personnel across the Lower Mainland and B.C. get on their bikes to help raise money and awareness for pediatric cancer programs and research, saw the group ride more than 800 kilometres over nine days. This year’s ride, which included three Delta police officers — Sgt. Sarah Swallow, Const. Dave Ogilvy and Const. Nilo Diguangco — took place Sept. 25 to Oct. 3 and raised more than $165,000 for the Canadian Cancer Society.

The downside to small town existence was demonstrated by news that Century Group is relocating its office from Tsawwassen to Surrey City Centre. The development company, which was founded by the late George Hodgins prior to the opening of the George Massey Tunnel more than a half-century ago, had become synonymous with this area and is responsible for developing much of South Delta, Tsawwassen in particular. Unfortunately, Century, which has been a tremendous corporate citizen in these parts over the years, has effectively outgrown the community. The move early next year to a revitalized downtown Surrey better positions the company in terms of attracting and retaining employees as well as puts it in the centre of a burgeoning development scene. I’m sure the decision was a difficult one for president Sean Hodgins, although I’m equally certain Century’s connection to this place will continue to run deep. In the end, however, Tsawwassen was no match for a more central location, complete with rapid transit at your doorstep, but, as we all know, there are attributes to this area the rest of the Lower Mainland, including Surrey, can only dream about. That was made clear a few pages further back in the same issue with a story about how Delta police chief Jim Cessford had been tasked to devise a plan to tackle crime and public safety concerns in Surrey. Mayoral candidate Barinder Rasode had asked our soon-tobe-retired chief to wade into the issue, one that has plagued a city that’s doing all it can to shed an unwanted reputation. It was certainly telling when Rasode asked: “How come we can’t be like Delta where no call is too small?” So as Surrey grows into an economic power in the region, our neighbours look enviously to the west when it comes to law and order. We might not have its might (although with a couple of huge industrial parks and an ever-expanding port, we’re certainly not a backwater in that regard), but I think most around here would agree we’ve got something better. Tsawwassen may be a little too sleepy and is definitely out of the way, so Century’s move is entirely understandable, but what might be viewed as cons from a business perspective can be pros when looked at in another light. It’s just another trade-off in a life full of them.

Plenty of time ahead to build on goodwill created by deal DOUG HUSBAND

COMMUNITY COMMENT Thankfully the public school teachers’ strike is over. For the third time in nearly 30 years, the negotiating teams, with the aid of a mediator, arrived at a voluntary solution. As we speak, schools are open and the Internet is replete with smiling kids off to school. The overwhelming support for the settlement by the teachers hopefully places them with the same positive attitude moving forward. The agreement provides the longest time frame of labour peace between the province and the B.C. Teachers’ Federation in their acrimonious history. The past usually predicts the future, however in this agreement there appears to have been some goodwill created between these adversaries. The longstanding issues are complex with intervening judicial decisions, tempered by the high

cost of educating more than a half a million students. Few of us of the older generation have any understanding of the complexities of the current classroom environment and learning dynamic. What can be understood and appreciated is the time between contract dates can be spent in improving relationships, creating a useful work environment and resolution of some issues prior to sessions at the “bargaining table.” So, congratulations are in order all around in arriving at this agreement. These comments are offered by one who has been management’s representative to a bargaining team on past labour issues and as a commercial mediator on civil disputes. As civilized people, we are constantly involved in disputes ranging from interpersonal issues to international conflicts. Personal and corporate conflicts are resolved through negotiations and more formally through mediation, arbitration and, lastly, trial. Trial results are not only costly and public, but the results are problematic and the protagonists give up their decision-making role to a neutral third party. Occasionally court decisions are viewed so fundamentally flawed, the judgement is appealed and a

new trial ordered, adding to the cost of justice and due process. Canadian tribal societies have long used a form of mediation in resolving personal disputes and civil injustice. Since its introduction in B.C. in the past 30 years, mediation has found a role in the litigation process. Lawyers educated in the adversarial relationship of tort law are now being introduced into the alternative dispute mechanism of mediation in their core curriculum as an accepted alternate to trials. Those involved in litigation are more and more inclined to attend mediation as decision makers armed with counsel, rather than risk an expensive trial and a problematic result. The parties prefer to craft their own settlement collectively. I find the mediation process rewarding for the participants in a private and confidential setting. While the teachers’ settlement was very public, the process for the negotiating teams should have ended in a satisfying way. Call me naive if you will, but this experience should foster a better working environment in the years to come. And a good night to you, Peter and Jim.

More ambulances needed Editor: Re: Delta defends plan for additional firefighter training, Oct. 1 As the flames of the 20 per cent wage increase over eight years have barely cooled, Mayor Lois Jackson is once again making decisions the rest of the province’s mayors think are downright ridiculous and a waste our municipal tax dollars. As a paramedic in Vancouver for 22 years, I think using our municipal monies to train and then to purchase and maintain the medical supplies the Corporation of Delta is proposing is the wrong approach.

I can appreciate fire Chief Dan Copeland’s rationale to make the Delta Fire Department appear more useful as only six per cent of its annual responses are to fires, but it’s the provincial budget that should be paying for the much-needed additional medical services in Delta (specifically South Delta). If Jackson, Copeland and chief administrative officer George Harvie really cared about the well being of the citizens of Delta, they would be lobbying the Liberal government for more ambulances or at the very least be demanding the ambulances stationed in Ladner (that are “supposed”

to service Ladner and Tsawwassen) stay in South Delta. On a daily basis, South Delta is left with no ambulances in our community as they have been directed to medical calls in Surrey to help with their massive workload. Ambulances stationed in Vancouver, White Rock and Richmond are being dispatch to 911 calls in South Delta as the closest resource on a regular basis. More provincial ambulances in our community will provide the adequate medical care that we all need and deserve, not wasted municipal tax dollars. Darren Chisholm

Huntington demands action on on-ramp

Editor: Re: Remove barriers to improve Hwy. 99 on-ramp, letter to the editor, Oct. 1 Keith Munro must have been nominating the 17/99 on-ramp “worst of the year” at the same moment I was meeting with the Ministry of Highway’s district manager to tell him the same

thing. I reported to the community earlier this year that I had been assured the barriers on the ramp were going to be removed last June. I told the district manager that, even though he was new on the job, I wasn’t particularly happy I had been put in the position of

misleading my community. There is no excuse for not completing the changes forthwith. I think we should all take up Munro’s challenge and let the ministry know just how we feel about its failure to fix that ramp. Vicki Huntington Delta South MLA

It is important to note that Port Metro Vancouver is not against the creation of inland ports. Any new infrastructure to handle future container traffic through the gateway is welcome, whether it is in Ashcroft, Prince Rupert or elsewhere. The existence of an inland terminal could provide additional services for shippers, making B.C. a more diverse and competitive place to do business. What is important to remember is that containers travelling to and from Asia will all need to be loaded and unloaded from ships calling on marine terminals along the West Coast. If trucking and rail companies determine inland terminals are economically feasible, we are still left with a need to increase marine terminal

Editor: Re: Inland port push continues, Oct. 1 The article requires some clarification regarding the role of Port Metro Vancouver and the ongoing dialogue around inland ports. Port Metro Vancouver is Canada’s largest and most diversified port. Our mandate guides our efforts to increase trade opportunities through the Asia-Pacific Gateway for the benefit of Canadians. As part of this, we work collaboratively with private industry, governments and stakeholders to support the capabilities and fluidity of the gateway, as well as minimize the impacts of these activities on the environment and neighbouring communities

Editor: The renovations of the Ladner Leisure Centre are almost completed and looking quite good. Unfortunately, once again, there is writing on the side of the building that states: “Training Facility of the Vancouver Giants.” The lacrosse community continues to be totally forgotten about. The Corporation of Delta was reminded after it put up the first sign that the

Ladner Pioneers senior lacrosse team was not once but two-time winners of the President’s Cup national lacrosse tournament. I feel that if the Giants can get their team name up on the building, then the Pioneers’ name should also be displayed. The Pioneers have been playing in this rink since 1977 and the Ladner Leisure Centre is supposed to be the “Home of Delta Lacrosse.” Bob Taggart

capacity to meet increased demand. The anticipated growth in container trade through the gateway over the coming decades requires planning now. The proposed Roberts Bank Terminal 2 project, subject to environmental approval, would provide enough additional capacity to meet demand until 2030. Additionally, it would provide considerable economic benefits for the region once it is operational, including about 7,600 direct jobs worth $813 million in wages. Paying it forward following surprise offering

Editor: On a recent Saturday night, my husband and I went to the Thai Isaan Cuisine & Cafe in Tsawwassen for dinner. We were followed into the restaurant by another couple. The young woman (everyone is so young nowadays!) came over to our table to show us an exotic soft blue flower she had brought from her mom’s yard. The restaurant had let her use a small glass to show it off. She and her husband finished their meal before we did, but before she left, she brought the lovely flower to us as a gift. She suggested we either keep it or pass it on. Naturally, we passed it on to another couple before we left, telling them the story accompanying it. They were so pleased and promised to pass the flower on before they left. What a nice small town thing to do. And guess what? If we have a blossom of any sort left in our yard next time we go out, we shall do the same thing. Patricia M. Gowing

A Warm and Joyful welcome to...

Elizabeth Northcott

Sacred Heart Catholic Church

All Saints Anglican Church

Pets at church And Jesus said to them, “Go into all the world and proclaim the good news to all creation.” (Mark 16:15) Can you picture the scene, a church filled with people and their pets? A lovebird chirping in her cage, a kitten peeking out from beneath the coat of her “mom” and puppies galore, romping and visiting and barking greetings to each other. This was the scene last Sunday at All Saints. Sitting so quietly in the front row were two little gerbils hoping that none of the bigger pets noticed their little pink noses. Why were they there, you may ask? Once each year as we remember St. Francis of Assisi (Oct. 4) we, like Francis, give thanks for all living creatures. Recognizing that all

creatures were blessed by God and as God looked at the whole of creation, the animals, the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, God declared that all of it “was good.” During this yearly celebration, we give thanks for those pets that bless our lives. We give thanks that God, in forming all life, has charged we humans with care for both the animals and all of creation itself. We are to attend the needs of the creatures in our care — not exploit them because we were created to be together, to be companions to one another, to thrive together. This is the good news we proclaim: God loves us all and it is good! What a wonderful theme to carry us into Thanksgiving!

Bowling back in B.C. for tour Award-winning author reading from latest work

BY

DAVE WILLIS

dwillis@delta-optimist.com

Tim Bowling will be back in B.C. on tour supporting his latest collection of poetry. The award-winning author, who grew up in Ladner and now lives in Edmonton, will be doing a series of readings from Circa Nineteen Hundred and Grief. Mid-life, or what it means to be middle aged and looking back and looking forward, plays a considerable role in the poems, he says The poems are also concerned a great deal with the West Coast, Bowling says. “My deepest source of imagery, my deepest source of motivation and inspiration is always the Fraser River,” he says. “That pretty much continues. There’s a number of poems in the book dealing with memories of growing up in the fishing industry.” Bowling, who teaches university classes, including creative writing, in Edmonton, says with a laugh that working with young people and writing poems keep him from being a complete curmudgeon. All writing, but poetry in par-

Tim Bowling “My Deepest source of inspiration is always the Fraser River.” ticular, has always been an act of affirmation and creativity, he explains. “I think it has to be. You start from nothing and you have to make something. I’ve often said that about even the bleakest poets, even the most depressed poets you can imagine, at the moment of creation, weren’t that way.” Circa Nineteen Hundred and Grief marks Bowling’s 12th collection of poetry. He has also written a memoir

and four novels, including The Bone Sharps and The Tinsmith. Bowling will be in Victoria tonight to start his tour. He heads to Cottage Bistro, 4470 Main St., Vancouver, on Sunday, Oct. 12 at 7 p.m. He’ll be joined by poet Russell Thornton. Bowling will take part in Simon Fraser University’s Lunch Poems Series on Wednesday, Oct. 15 at noon at the Teck Gallery of SFU’s Harbour Centre Campus, 515 Hastings St. His tour wraps up that evening at 7 p.m. at the Peter Kaye Room of the Vancouver Public Library. The evening, titled The Bearable Weight of Midlife: A Reading from Circa Nineteen Hundred and Grief, is presented by Gaspereau Press and The Alcuin Society. Bowling has received numerous accolades for his work, including Governor General’s Award nominations, Writers Trust of Canada nominations, a Guggenheim Foundation fellowship, Alberta Book Awards, Alberta Readers Choice Awards nominations and a Canadian Authors Association Award.

The African Children’s Choir will perform in Ladner later this month.

The African Children’s Choir will visit Ladner for a pair of performances later this month. The group of kids, ranging in age from eight to 12, has been “all over the place,” says tour leader Nathanael Longstaff. Since starting the tour about nine months ago in California, the choir has moved around the western portion of the U.S. and into Canada, performing concerts with a variety of traditional dances and songs and gospel music. This group is made up of children from different regions of Uganda. “People do not go home the same after they see one of these performances,” says Longstaff. The performances promote the potential of the kids and the immense hope they have due to the organization, he says. “It’s truly moving.” Concerts are free and open to all. A freewill offering is taken at the performance to

support African Children’s Choir programs. Shows are scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 19 at Ladner Christian Reformed Church and then Sunday, Oct. 26 at Ladner Baptist Church. For more on the organization visit africanchildrenschoir.com.

New guild show explores change BY

O

NOREEN M. FAIRWEATHER Optimist contributor

ddly enough, change is one of the few constants in our lives; it just happens. Change can be planned, or shockingly unexpected, deliberately experimental, or a sudden gracious happiness. It can also be a challenge like that set for its members by the South Delta Artists Guild in its latest show, Time for Change, which runs through Oct. 19. The result has filled Gallery 1710 with exciting and thought-provoking art expressed by leading artists, many of them competition award winners. Sandra Taylor, winner of the guild’s 2012 Oil and Water competition, shows abstract free-brushwork mixed-media work, while Marlene Strain, workshop leader who also heads up the distribution of guild paintings for show in five public locations, displays outstanding watercolours. Jacqueline Dunn, just back from China after a successful show of 40 paintings commissioned by an art dealer who saw her work at Gallery 1710 earlier this year, has three new oil paintings for sale. Admired artists Marilyn Atkey, Birgit Coath, Laurel Johnson, Wynn Dennett and Jodie Blaney show off their distinctive styles with works in Time for Change. For retired lawyer Ulf Ottho, who has two landscapes in the show, “en plein air”

Marlene Strain’s love of life, nature and colour find beautiful expression in her watercolour paintings, which have won many awards in numerous exhibits. A long-time member of SDAG, she teaches both privately and through guild workshops.

painting has a special significance. “Plein air,” French for “open air,” describes how

Monet and Van Gogh worked, outside whatever the weather.

Besides being an artist, Ottho is a keen motorcyclist, and uses his Harley Road King, packed with all his painting gear, including an easel, to reach his landscape subjects and do his preliminary sketches on site, en plein air. “It works better than Tom Thomson’s canoe,” he says of his transport. Birkenhead Lake, the subject of one of his paintings, is in the Whistler-Pemberton area, and Ottho spent four hours there, striving to get the true intensity of the natural colours. He then painted the larger version in his studio, his usual technique. All the work in Gallery 1710 (adjacent to the South Delta Recreation Centre in Tsawwassen) is original and for sale. Media used includes watercolour, oil, acrylic, pen and ink, mixed media and marker pen. Time for Change can be viewed from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Thursday to Sunday, until Oct. 19. The guild has just initiated a schedule change for its exhibitions that will open up the gallery space to more artists. Shows open to all members will now run just under three weeks a month, including three weekends, with the remaining time available for private shows, for either members or non-members. For more information on the guild and its opportunities, visit www.southdeltaartistsguild.com.

Playwright up for national award Rick Chafe learns of GG nomination as his play opens in Tsawwassen As the Sidekick Players Club opened its 18th season with The Secret Mask last night in Tsawwassen, playwright Rick Chafe learned that he has been selected as one of the finalists to receive the Governor General’s Literary Award. The Secret Mask is the touching story of a man, Ernie, who suffered a stroke that resulted in him having aphasia and memory loss. The character is based on Chafe’s father, who suffered a stroke in 2002. “The Secret Mask is my most personal play because it’s almost entirely inspired by my father and his rough grace and humour, so I’m over the moon that what I think of as my dad’s play has attracted a GG nomination,” said Chafe. “Mostly I’m hoping the nomination gets the attention of more theatres and this play finds more productions as a result.” Sidekick president Carroll Lefebvre said the group was thrilled to learn this week that Chafe had been selected as one of the finalists for the Governor General’s Literary Award in

Drama. “We loved this script from the first reading and now, seeing it brought to life during rehearsals, we have fallen in love with it over and over again,” Lefebvre said. “We laugh and we cry ... all for the right reasons.” The finalists for the Governor General’s Literary Awards are chosen by peer assessment committees, who consider all eligible books published between Sept. 1, 2013 and Sept. 30, 2014 for English-language books and between July 1, 2013 and June 30, 2014 for French-language books. This year, 966 titles in the English-language categories and 637 in the French-language categories were submitted. “This year’s list of finalists contains powerful novels and poems, imaginative children’s books, skillful translations, entrancing dramas and enlightening non-fiction,” said Canada Council director and CEO Simon Brault. “They are all meaningful books in which we can, as readers and Canadians, lose ourselves and find ourselves.” Governor General David

Guess Who, The Beach Boys, Metallica, Sublime, 2pac and Justin Timberlake into a unique blend of acoustic rock and hip-hop. Produced by Danny Craig (Default), Get That Thing! explores new sonic territory for Pedwell with a focus on acoustic guitars, big hooks and memorable harmonies. Born and raised in South Delta, Bradley Pedwell raised the funds for Get That Thing! in less than 12 hours via a crowd-funding campaign. Over the next year, the eclectic songwriter wrote

100-plus songs, spent his weekends on public transit, grew out his hair, bruised his heel bone and got in a near-fatal car accident. It all resulted in the six memorable songs, including the title track, Get That Thing! “This EP started out as me recording my six best songs, and it evolved into a change in my sound, and ultimately, my attitude,” said Pedwell. “You find a thing you love and you get that thing.” Get That Thing! is now available exclusively through Pedwell’s website at www.pedwellmusic.com.

Charismatic Canadian singer/songwriter/producer Pedwell has just released an ambitious new EP that’s already inspiring listeners to put their stamp on the world. Pedwell’s Get That Thing! is reminiscent of Justin Timberlake’s FutureSexLoveSounds and Everlast’s Eat At Whitey’s. His unique new sound fuses aspects of both rock and hip-hop to produce a genre that Pedwell has deemed “urban rock.” Get That Thing! is a six-song EP combining Pedwell’s influences of The

With Dulux Lifemaster™ fall is the only thing in the air. ®

Drying laundry on a clothesline instead of in a clothes dryer can drastically reduce an individual’s energy consumption.

Dulux Lifemaster™ is out best selling VOC free interior paint. It’s 100% acrylic and virtually odourless, which means you can paint a room and occupy it the same day. It contains 100% acrylic resins for superior adhesion and durability, delivering a long-lasting, flawless finish. E Z Clean technology makes it easy to remove even the most difficult stains, leaving that “just painted” look for years to come.

Simple ways to do your part for the planet It’s easy to adopt a more eco-friendly lifestyle While charitable donations and volunteering are the first things many people think of with regard to giving back to their communities, there are additional ways that conscientious men and women can give back if they don’t have the time or money to donate. One such way is to protect the planet. Everyone benefits from a healthy planet, and adopting a more eco-friendly lifestyle is a great way to give back to your community and benefit the people who live there now and those who will live there in the generations to come. Here are a few easy ways to help the planet: • Buy local — Locally produced items don’t have to be transported across the globe, drastically reducing the fuel needed to get those items into your house. In addition, because they don’t have to be transported long distances, many locally produced items are not as heavily packaged, cutting

back on the use of potentially harmful or wasteful plastics. • Use a clothesline — Using a clothesline instead of a clothes dryer to dry your clothes can dramatically reduce your energy consumption. Also, clothes that hang dry won’t be subject to the same amount of wear and tear as those dried in a dryer, meaning they will last longer, saving you money and cutting down on the demand for new clothes that must be produced and transported, often times from overseas, at a heavy cost to the planet. • Do less laundry — It’s not just how you dry your clothes that affects the environment, but how frequently you wash those clothes can influence the size of your carbon footprint. Washing machines need a substantial amount of water and energy to operate effectively, and using them to wash anything less than a full load is wasting both water and energy, not to

mention raising your utility bills. Only launder clothes when you have a full load. • Stick to showers — Much like there are ways to save water when washing your clothes, there also are ways to save water when washing yourself. Forgo baths for showers, which consume roughly 50 per cent less water than baths. When showering, keep it quick, as each minute you’re in the shower, you are using as much as five gallons of water. • Opt out of paper statements — Paper statements, whether it’s your monthly bank statements or utility bills, can increase your risk of identity theft, especially if you live an apartment complex where mail is not delivered directly to your door. Opting for e-statements not only makes you less susceptible to identity theft, it also drastically cuts back on paper consumption, saving trees and improving air quality along the way.

Cut down your waste this holiday season The holiday season generates a lot of waste: · Thousands of paper and plastic shopping bags end up in landfills after the holiday season. Reusable cloth bags can limit the amount of bags tossed away, and users of plastic bags can

recycle them at appropriate receptacles. · Approximately 33 million live trees are cut down and sold in North America each year for Christmas. If you use a live tree, be sure to recycle it so it can be turned into mulch instead

of being sent to a landfill. Otherwise, consider buying a potted tree and planting it after the holidays. · If everyone in Canada wrapped just three gifts in reused paper or gift bags, it would save enough paper to cover 45,000 hockey rinks.

Reduce your carbon footprint by 70% Each km of open-cut sewer trench produces more than 1,000 truckloads of material.

Celebrating 25 years of energy conservation

PW Trenchless Your No-Dig Specialists Trenchless construction–a revolutionary concept in laying underground wire and piping–is not only helping to reduce the monetary costs associated with underground construction, it is also making a huge impact on the ability to reduce costly damage to the environment. “Trenchless procedures are more environmentally friendly because they can reduce dust, pollution, and noise, and make installations through wetlands and other environmentally-sensitive areas far less disruptive,” says David O’Sullivan, Owner, P.W. Trenchless Construction Ltd. By minimizing the amount of excavation required to bury pipe and cable, trenchless construction reduces damage to land and road surfaces, including the costs to restore them, causes less disruption of traffic and other activities on and around job sites, and allows for installations in areas where excavation is impractical or impossible. “The various methods of construction using trenchless procedures mean that the material from the ground surface down to the pipe zone is not disturbed. This causes a major reduction in the use of energy and still we are able to install or renew the utility with the same degree of effectiveness.” O’Sullivan says the biggest impact trenchless construction is having on the environment is

the massive reduction in carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. “Compared to cut-and-cover construction, trenchless procedures actually reduce CO2 emissions by 78 to 90 per cent,” he said. A University of Waterloo study concluded that reduction associated with trenchless construction is achieved primarily due to limiting disruption of traffic flow and shorter duration of projects using trenchless methods. O’Sullivan recommends cities and companies managing installations of underground wiring and piping check out the easy-to-use Carbon Calculator at www.NAST-BC.org. The calculator estimates the amount of carbon that would occur during an opencut construction project compared to one using trenchless procedures. “It is quite amazing to see the difference. The trenchless technology is really making a big difference—both in lowering disruption to the environment and lowering the bottom line costs of construction.” Specializing in pipe bursting and slip lining, P.W. Trenchless Construction Inc. is one of the most experienced trenchless contractors in British Columbia. For more information, visit www. pwtrenchless.com.

B.C. Hydro’s Power Smart program has been delivering tools to help British Columbians save energy and save money for 25 years. The current average annual household energy use is 12 per cent lower than what it would have been without Power Smart — that’s enough to power 210,000 homes annually. Each October B.C. Hydro celebrates Power Smart Month, a month dedicated to new conservation offers and incentives to help British Columbians save energy and money. Power Smart Month includes rebates on energy efficient appliances and products available at retail stores across the province. New energy champions will be identified at the Power Smart Excellence Awards and dozens of restaurants will dim their lights as part

of the annual Candlelight Dinner. “Our 10-year plan for B.C. Hydro commits to providing customers with tools to manage their electricity costs,” said provincial Energy Minister Bill Bennett. “Power Smart Month raises awareness about energy efficient products and services as well as financial incentives that can help British Columbians save money by saving power.” The simplest way anyone can lower their energy use is by turning off unnecessary lights and electronics. This year’s Power Smart Month theme is “Offtober”

that should encourage even more British Columbians to conserve energy. “B.C. Hydro is pleased to celebrate Power Smart Month, which offers customers simple ways to save electricity,” said Chris O’Riley, executive vice president of generation for B.C. Hydro. “We are proud of what we have accomplished with Power Smart over 25 years — it’s something other utilities across North America have modeled their energy conservation programs after.” To find out more about Power Smart Month and how you can save, visit: www.powersmart.ca.

Power Smart Month events • Customers can get up to a $100 rebate on a high-efficiency clothes washer from B.C. Hydro. Several B.C. cities will match the rebate, bringing the potential savings up to $200. • B.C. Hydro is also offering a rebate of $50 to $75 for select ENERGY STAR refrigerators and a $100 rebate on ENERGY STAR clothes dryers. • Businesses and local governments will recognize champions in reducing energy usage at the bi-annual Power Smart Excellence Awards in Vancouver on Oct. 16. The Power Smart Excellence Awards are B.C.’s premier energy conservation celebration, acknowledging individuals and organisations for leading in energy efficiency. • The annual Candlelight Conservation Dinner on Oct. 22 will include over 60 restaurants across B.C. Participating restaurants will dim their lights and turn up the ambiance to show how simple actions can save energy. Exclusive dining discounts to these restaurants will also be offered to the public for the evening.

The 2013 South Delta Senior Secondary AAAA Girls Volleyball Team is one of this year’s Sports Champion recipients. • Volunteer: George Windsor - Hockey and other - What began as a simple decision to coach his young son in soccer has blossomed into three decades of continuous service to the youth of Delta for Windsor. • Master Athlete: Cheryl Watson - Dragon Boat - This year’s Sport Champion Master Athlete of the Year is living proof of the proverb, “When life throws you a lemon, make lemonade.” Diagnosed in 1995 and again in 2009 with breast cancer, her story is a wonderfully passionate response to this deadly disease. • Team: 2013 South Delta Senior Secondary AAAA Girls Volleyball Team - To win a provincial title is very difficult but to win two in a row is that much harder and extremely rare. But the 2013 South Delta Sun Devils managed this feat as they captured their second consecutive

AAAA Girls Volleyball championship culminating an outstanding year in which they finished with a 41-15 record. Inductees • Builder: Martin Ray - Medicine - Athletes at all levels develop and achieve excellence in their sports with the assistance and guidance of sports medicine doctors like Dr. Ray. It is a distinct reality that she is one of the best women’s tennis players ever produced in B.C., if not Canada. • Athlete: Jamie Buis - Football - His Canadian Football League career with the Lions ran from 1983 through 1989 and during that time he played in over 100 CFL regular season games. In his career, He won three CFL West Division Championships and played in two Grey Cup Championship games. Help Lester with his passion to become a commercial pilot

Vitamin VIP Room exclusive

Michino handbags are our new obsession: luxe, classic, graceful and with enough whimsy to give every piece the “Wham! Pow!” impact of a cartoon brawl.

Lester Wong’s story is one of strength, determination and the importance of having a goal. In 2009, he suffered devastating burns to 33% of his body as the result of a car accident. After months in the hospital, he finished his BCIT studies as an aircraft engineer, got his private pilot’s licence and was awarded the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Award. His sister has started a crowdfunding campaign to fund his next goal: becoming a commercial pilot. Help his dream take flight at FundAid.ca. Firefighters are also raising money for the Burn Fund, which helped Lester and his family after his accident. You can donate to their campaigns on FundAid.ca
