More nightmarish stories about the level of emergency care at Delta Hospital are emerging from doctors who work there. Part of an all-out public campaign to bring the hospital’s surgical program back to the level where it was over decade ago, the Delta Hospital Medical Staff Association this week highlighted the case of a Tsawwassen single mother willing to talk about what she experienced recently. Wanting her story told, but not wanting her name made public, the mother told the Optimist she brought her 17-year-old son to Delta Hospital’s ER last Thursday evening because he was complaining of severe pain. Tests reveled he had an appendicitis and needed to get into surgery, however, he had to be transferred to Surrey Memorial Hospital by ambulance because Delta Hospital’s surgical department, unlike other hospitals in the region, is closed in the evening. The teen ended up waiting seven hours in Surrey, and by the time he was wheeled in for surgery, his appendix had burst, his

Dr. Robert Shaw (left), Dr. Jean Segal, Dr. Jeff Hornstein and Dr. Navdeep Grewal are among the 31 physicians at Delta Hospital who are sounding the alarm about the state of the facility’s surgical program. mother said. Frustrated with the lack of answers, the angry mom wonders why a relatively straightforward procedure couldn’t have been performed more promptly at her local hospital. “I cannot believe it. It would have been so good for my son who’s suffering now. It shouldn’t have happened and he would have been fine. Seven hours is a long time. It’s unacceptable.” She added Delta Hospital is a good hospital, but should be able to provide a basic level of emergency service. In a letter to Health Minister Terry Lake last week signed by more than 30 doctors, several exam-

ples were cited of patients being sent away for produces the doctors claim could have easily been performed in Delta. Those patients are not getting timely care, the doctors say. The doctors have been describing the situation as “a crisis” and that the surgical program is in “imminent danger of imploding” because operating rooms aren’t available for emergency surgeries 24 hours a day like at other hospitals. In Delta, operating rooms close at 3 p.m., which means those patients requiring urgent procedures that show up after hours or close to closing time must be transferred. The doctors have also been collaborating with sev-

eral local residents, including former civic councillor Doug Massey, to set up a community advocacy group for the hospital. “Familiar names and faces are appearing once again to join the fight for our community hospital, this time in support of doctors and funding for its hospital surgery program,” said Massey. Community activist Inger Kam is also taking part in the effort, helping organize volunteers and working on an advocacy campaign with Massey. “When Dr. (Robert) Shaw informed me of how bad the funding situation at the hospital is I had no idea and knew that something needed to be done right

away,” said Kam. Noting residents are offering to donate and join once a society is formed, Kam added, “We love our hospital here in Delta and will hold our politicians accountable to this as we have done in the past.” The new group will be called Friends of Delta Hospital. An official with Fraser Health last week noted the hospital would continue to play a key role in the delivery of health care in the region, although there are no plans to change the surgical program to all-day. Massey and Kam are asking anyone interested in taking part to e-mail them at friendsofdeltahospital@ gmail.com.

Optimist hosting pair of candidate forums on Twitter

The Delta Optimist is taking the municipal election campaign to social media next week with two online forums. The forums will give candidates a chance to have their say on a variety of issues and will also give local voters an opportunity to pose questions and take part in the debate.

All candidates for council and school board, as well as members of the public, are invited to take part. Using the popular social media platform Twitter and the hashtags #DOcouncilforum and #DOschoolforum, the interactive one-hour events invite the entire community

in on the discussion. The forums will take place on Wednesday, Nov. 5 (council) and Friday, Nov. 7 (school board). Both will run from noon to 1 p.m. We hope you’ll join in the discussion. Forum Basics: • How do I view the debate? You can watch the forum unfold by visiting

Dog walker expected to plead guilty next month Lawyer makes appearance on client’s behalf this week BY

JESSICA KERR

jkerr@delta-optimist.com

The woman facing animal cruelty charges in the deaths of six Ladner dogs earlier this year is expected to plead guilty next month. Dog walker Emma Paulsen is facing several charges under both the Criminal Code and the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, including killing or injuring an animal, causing unnecessary pain or suffering of an animal, failing to provide adequate care to dogs and mischief. Paulsen’s lawyer appeared in Surrey provincial court on her behalf Wednesday afternoon. Asking for the matter to be set aside until Nov. 12, he told the judge she planned to enter a guilty plea at that time. Paulsen initially reported the canines stolen from her truck while it was parked at a Langley park in May. It later came out that the canines — Buddy, a Boston terrier; Mia, a pit

MLA presses provincial gov’t for long-term dredging plan BY

JESSICA KERR

jkerr@delta-optimist.com

As the dredging of the Fraser River continues this fall, Delta South MLA Vicki Huntington called on the province last week to come up with a long-term plan for local waterways. “The economic output of the lower Fraser River is equivalent, in both tonnage and jobs, to Canada’s St. Lawrence Seaway,” she said in the legislature last week. “This economic engine is dependent on continued, safe navigation, and safe navigation is absolutely dependent on dredging.” Until 1998, dredging of all channels was a federal responsibility. In 1999, the port authority took over dredging only the main navigational channel, which resulted in silt building up in the many secondary channels. The silt has wreaked havoc on float homes and made some of the channels impassable at low tide. The current work to clear the silt from the secondary channels is the result

Dredging began earlier this year thanks to $10 million in onetime funding, but there’s no long-term plan to keep the secondary channels clear. of $10 million in one-time funding from the province, Corporation of Delta, City of Richmond and Port Metro Vancouver. The funding was secured after years of lobbying by the Ladner Sediment Group, a small, dedicated group of residents. Work in the river began in January. While the group is happy to see the channels finally being cleared, there is a concern that without a longterm plan and regular funding the problem will return. “It would be a catastrophe... to have them fill back up again,” said John

Roscoe, chair of the Ladner Sediment Group. Huntington took that message to Victoria last week. She stressed that onetime funding is not enough, telling Transportation Minister Todd Stone that a long-term plan is necessary. “The value of the Fraser River to B.C.’s economy demands ongoing sediment control,” she said. “We don’t want to be in the same crisis position in another 10 years where our working harbours are left high and dry and our economic productivity is placed at risk.”

In September, Roscoe wrote to the B.C. Standing Committee on Finance asking for $750,000 in annual funding to maintain the local channels. An engineering study has indicated that an estimated 48,000 cubic metres of silt will settle in the secondary channels every year, and the annual funding would be used to help clear the sediment to ensure safe navigation and assist in flood control. The group is also continuing its push for more assistance from the federal government. Earlier this year, Roscoe said, the government refused a request to waive $250,000 in dumping fees. And while Delta-Richmond East MP Kerry-Lynne Findlay has worked on the issue since being elected in 2011, Roscoe said the group feels the federal government has turned a blind eye to the situation. Findlay said the federal government’s contribution to the project came through Port Metro Vancouver and DFO.

Riverside Dental once again running program that also benefits hospital

A Ladner dentist is once again promoting a healthier Halloween with his Cash for Candy program. Dr. Raj Dhiman will pay $2 for every pound of Halloween candy a child exchanges at Riverside Dental on Nov. 3, 4 and 5. A matching donation will then be made to the Delta Hospital Foundation with a minimum donation of $1,500.

Having children of his own, Dhiman understands that dressing up and collecting candy on Halloween night is something many families look forward to all year, but he wants to make sure the health impacts of such an activity aren’t overlooked. The Cash for Candy program focuses on raising awareness of both oral and systemic health. Dhiman hopes par-

Driver fails breath test after his vehicle ends up in Tsaw. ditch Suspect not injured, but police issue a 90-day roadside suspension The purpose of the Crime Beat is to educate and inform the public about some of the property crime trends occurring in South Delta and other files of interest. If you see anything occurring that you believe to be suspicious, call 911 for in-progress crimes and emergencies or 604-9464411 for other assistance. The following are some of the calls the Delta police responded to in the previous week: Tsawwassen • Oct. 25, 9:26 p.m., 28th Avenue and 56th Street: Report received that a vehicle was in the ditch and the driver was still in the vehicle. Police attended and found a male with the smell of liquor on his breath. The suspect admitted to drinking two beers earlier and breath samples provided read “Fail.” A 90-day roadside suspension was issued to the suspect and his vehicle impounded. The suspect had no injuries and left the area with a friend. • Oct. 27, 12:24 p.m.,

1000-block of 56th Street: Complainant reported observing a male in a white Ford panel van back up to the back of the building and steal 10 potted rhododendron plants. Video surveillance examined and still photos disseminated for possible identification of the suspect. Ladner • Oct. 21, 12:15 p.m., 4900-block of 44th Avenue: Complainant reported suspects had broken into his van by punching the rear door lock. Miscellaneous hand tools valued were stolen. Incident still under investigation. • Oct. 21, 7:13 p.m., 4900-block of 58B Street: Complainant received a phone call from a third party indicating the complainant had hit a vehicle and left his phone number on the victim’s car. The complainant denied any knowledge of the incident, hung up and then contacted police. Police examined the

complainant’s vehicle in his driveway but found no damage consistent with any collision. It appears the wrong phone number was left on his vehicle. • Oct. 22, 9:57 a.m., 4800-block of Elliott Street: Citizen reported he lost his wallet in the parking lot of the supermarket. The folding wallet is brown leather and contains driver’s licence, CareCard, and debit and credit cards. • Oct. 23, 7:38 p.m., 4700-block of 47A Avenue: Complainant reported that she heard an explosion and saw what she thought was smoke coming from her neighbour’s front door. Police attended and found the residence to be secure with no signs of smoke or fire. Heavy thunder and lightning at the time appeared to be the cause and the lightning may have hit a transformer to cause the noise. • Oct. 24, 7:40 a.m.,

4800-block of Harbour Stroll: Vehicle parked in an open access covered parkade was broken into sometime overnight. The suspects smashed the passenger side front window and removed a Clarion foldout DVD player from the dash. Neighbourhood inquiries proved negative. • Oct. 24, 5:51 p.m., 4700-block of Arthur Drive: Complainant reported she left her bike locked in the area for several hours and when she returned the bike was gone. It appeared the suspects had used bolt cutters to cut the lock. Complainant given the Corporation of Delta phone number to arrange to look at found bikes. • Oct. 26, 9:56 a.m., 5000-block of 48th Avenue: Police attended a business that reported a window had been broken. The interior of the business appeared to be undisturbed and the owners attended the scene to secure the business. Police seized the broken window frame for forensic examination.

TED MURPHY

MURPHY’S LAW I’ll buy the suggestion they’re all free thinkers, but I’m less inclined to bite on the notion of their so-called independence. It’s become a trend in municipal politics in these parts for candidates to bill themselves as independents even if they sport running mates and have created a moniker for that alliance. Voters shouldn’t confuse such affiliation for a slate or a party, we’re told, because it’s simply a case of like-minded independents running together. I hope the rest of their platform makes more sense. I can only presume that party politics carry such a negative connotation that candidates do their best to distance themselves from that unwanted characterization. Even though these formal alliances are out of fashion, I believe there’s definitely something to be said for slates, which can aid both political hopefuls as well as voters tasked with deciding who gets elected. Alliances allow those seeking office to share costs and pool support so aligning with those of a similar mind makes practical sense, particularly for those trying to break through for the first time. I’m not sure Vicki Huntington would have got elected to Delta council back in the ‘90s if she hadn’t been part of the formidable IDEA ticket, while both Guy Gentner and Scott Hamilton unsuccessfully tried the independent route before hitting pay dirt with Lois Jackson’s TriDelta slate. All three have since gone on to provincial politics, but it’s entirely possible none of them would have enjoyed a political career had it not been for fortuitous alliances at the outset. Slates can also be a godsend for voters, who often struggle during municipal election campaigns because there are so many candidates seeking office. Knowing that a newcomer is aligned with a certain incumbent provides voters with some sense of who they are without having to do a lot of homework, which, if we’re being honest, few will take the time to do. Slates help make sense of it all. One drawback to that, which has likely helped spur the independence movement, is a growing disdain for block voting. One of the great things about local government is the absence of party discipline, which allows politicians to vote as they see fit rather than being told what they will and won’t support. Forging these don’t-call-it-a-party alliances but still maintaining some form of independence would appear to provide candidates with the best of both worlds. Or at least that’s the theory.

Fall is welcomed for harvest, Halloween and civic election DOUG HUSBAND

COMMUNITY COMMENT I have long believed the fall semester to be the best season of the year. In earlier years the farming community’s work was complete and the spoils of the endeavour enjoyed. With a harvest festival to celebrate, locals were then off to enjoy the pursuits of the hunting season. As youngsters, we looked forward to Halloween and an evening of trick-or-treating. November hosted civic elections, which at one time were a yearly event, but now lengthened to fouryear terms. These comments arrive on your doorstep on Halloween, providing the only opportunity to comment on that celebration and local politics before the municipal election on Nov. 15. Where and when did this popular October custom begin? It started back in medieval times as early as the seventh century. Ancient Celts and Gaels in Britain and Ireland

celebrated the end of harvest season. The celebration of “All Hallows Day” was mainly confined to small Irish Catholic settlements. It had roots in paganism and honouring their Gods. Over time these festivals acquired sinister implications of ghosts, goblins and witches roaming about. A Catholic pope took note and countered “All Hallows Day” of Oct. 31 with “All Saints Day” on Nov. 1 as a religious celebration. Early “All Hallows” celebrants were nervous walking home in the dark and wore costumes and scary facemasks to ward off roaming evil spirits. Ireland is still the only country where Halloween is celebrated as a national holiday. Thousands of Irish fled their country during the great potato famine and settled in the United States and Canada, bringing their celebration of “All Hallows” with them. For many, Halloween remains the scariest and most fun nighttime celebration of the year. Beware in your travels of ghosts, goblins, witches and scary faces. Local elections are fast approaching. In some countries, participation in the right to vote is at an all-time high, where participation in our federal, provincial

and civic elections is at an all-time low. Delta’s turnout will be impacted as there is no challenge to the mayor’s chair. Let me be the first to publicly congratulate Lois Jackson, a very astute and intuitive politician, on a long and successful political career. There are 13 candidates seeking six council seats and 16 running for seven school board seats. Credit must go to these 29 citizens for undertaking a daunting election process and those 13 successful candidates for agreeing to a four-year commitment, which is hard to explain or anticipate until immersed in public service. One way to increase voter turnout is to allow ballots to be cast online, from the comfort of home or office. Surely Elections Canada can design a safe, secure system. Speaking of security, Canada Post recently left our neighbourhood feeling insecure. The neighbourhood post box was left unlocked following a delivery and 15 boxes containing mail were left unsecured for five days despite numerous phone calls to Canada Post. “Sorry for the inconvenience,” was the only official response following a routine lock up. And a good night to you, Rose.

LNG is a less dirty fossil fuel

Editor: Re: Premier at groundbreaking for Tilbury LNG plant expansion, Oct. 22 As noted in your article, the premier puts forth a big smile, brave face and grandiose claims as she celebrates the expansion of a liquid natural gas plant in Tilbury. She does not share the trepidation that she undoubtedly feels at the possibility of an economic disaster. In spite of her sweet enticement packages, foreign corporate developers are threatening to pull

out of B.C. Most of the cheap natural gas in B.C. has already been harvested. World LNG prices are reported to have dropped from $18.50 per mmBtu in 2012 to current levels around $11.00 mmBtu. The cost of the more expensive “fracked gas” is very close to not being worth the cost of getting it out of the ground. While an economic disaster is clearly a possibility, an environmental disaster is a certainty. These disasters are happening now wherever fracking is used to get fossil fuels out of the

Sidekick production hits close to home

Editor: Delta Stroke Recovery members attended a performance of The Secret Mask at the Tsawwassen Arts Centre last Friday. It is a delightful play on a serious subject that incorporates a lot of laughs as a stroke survivor struggles to regain his communication skills. His son, who comes from Winnipeg to assess his father’s situation, is distant and uncaring until a connection begins via the speech pathologist. The son has not been in contact with his father since

he was two years old and harbours a lot of resentment without the understanding of why his father left. Although it sounds like it could be a depressing play, it isn’t. I hope the play will be presented again as it deserves a much larger audience than was present locally. I have been told some people decided not to attend because of the subject matter, which is their loss because they missed out on an excellent production. I believe that a play of

LNG is highly volatile. Does Delta council have a comprehensive report of the safety risks associated with LNG tankers going up and down the Fraser River? LNG is called a cleaner source of fossil fuel, but it is still a fossil fuel. It should be called a less dirty fuel. Shirley Ireland

Ladner doesn’t want North Delta’s congestion Editor: Re: MK Delta proposal divides candidates, Oct. 24 I just read that Delta council candidate Heather King is looking to do a land swap with a developer should she be elected on Nov. 15. King proposes the developer, who owns land in North Delta, swap that land for Paterson Park, owned by the Corporation of Delta and Kwantlen Polytechnic University.

This developer is looking to build condos, townhouses as well as retail. Can you imagine our beloved and heritage rich Paterson Park completely developed? The entrance to Ladner would then take on the unfortunate look of Steveston Highway at No. 5 Road in Richmond where Fantasy Gardens used to be. Not to mention the eyesore, this would create traffic nightmares to compound

what we already face trying to get out of Ladner to go into Richmond during rush hour. The TFN development and mall will add traffic and take away business from both Tsawwassen and Ladner Village. A10 The Delta Optimist October 31, 2014 Letters to the Editor

Racism rears its ugly head Editor: Racism is alive and well in Tsawwassen. Recently I was waiting at the light on Highway 17 to turn into our wonderful town. Beside me, on their way to the ferries, were two bikers in full regalia. At first glance, I thought they were your typical Harley bikers with their chapter vests on, but then I realized they were Sikhs with turbans, their vests declaring they were from the Sikh Motorcycle Club. It made me smile — another embracing icon of our multicultural society. It didn’t even occur to me they might be breaking helmet laws. The man behind me was also smiling, or rather, he was chuckling to himself. I wouldn’t have thought twice about that either, except that as we began to move, this

silver-haired hotshot driving an expensive black BMW or Audi got the attention of the driver behind the Sikh men, pointed at the bikers, laughed and shook his head with contempt. Obviously, Mr. Hotshot was not embracing multiculturalism like I was. Can you imagine if us “white” folks were mocked in an Indian restaurant by the “regulars” because we can enjoy a spicy curry like the best of them? It saddens me when people in our community make sweeping statements about South Asians. Have we not got beyond all of this? I have an Afro-American friend from Texas who once told me he prefers the racism in the U.S. because it is visible. It can be confronted, whereas in Canada, racists are cowards, making these statements behind

the backs of our brethren or under their hate-filled breaths. I hope Mr. Hotshot and all the other smug bigots (whether Caucasian or from any other ethnic group) out there read this letter and feel some shame, because in case you have forgotten, this country was built on immigrants. Sikhs, Chinese and all kinds of nationalities have been settling in Canada since its conception and it’s well overdue that we get past the idea this is a “white man’s country.” Perhaps the next time you see an ethnic group embracing North America’s culture, you’ll smile, not out of disdain, but out of delight and pride that we live in a country that all kinds of people like to call their own. Editor: I’ve been reading about Dr. Robert Shaw’s concerns about surgeries being handled at Delta Hospital and wanted to add my concerns as I had an experience there this past May. After I took myself to the ER with severe abdominal pain, I was moved in fairly quickly as my symptoms were progressing rapidly. After X-ray, ultrasound and a CT scan, I was finally diagnosed with a tumour on my ovary. I also had “torsion” (which means twisting), which was the cause of the extreme pain I was in. I then learned that Delta Hospital could not treat me as it does not have a gynecologist on staff. I was discharged and referred to a surgeon’s office in Richmond. The following day after

being told I could not see the Richmond doctor for a week, I sought more pain medication from my family doctor here in Ladner. Thank god I saw her as she may have saved my life. She told me to go to Richmond Hospital ASAP. My doctor also works at Delta ER and was shocked that I had been discharged at all and that the Richmond doctor had not seen me immediately. I have since learned that “torsion” is an urgent situation as it kills the organ it is twisting and that can cause mass internal infection like gangrene, from which you can die. I have filed and pursued a complaint through RGH about the doctor there and my own family doctor assured me she would be discussing my treatment with appropriate people at

Delta Hospital so I have never pursued that. My concern is that when someone cannot be treated at Delta Hospital, no one seems to be making sure the appropriate treatment is given in a timely way. I also think the health authorities do not communicate with each other effectively or that the B.C. Ambulance Service is working most efficiently. An ambulance will not take you where you request; that is why my doctor told me not to call an ambulance but to get my husband to drive me to Richmond. I certainly hope Delta Hospital can eventually become a full-service hospital and ER. I do not feel confident that in its current state it can keep our residents healthy and safe due to lack of timely treatment. Martha Cheney

Sweet little Snuggles is looking for a loving family to call her own! She is a silly and goofy little gal who just LOVES the people she knows! Snuggles can be a little leery of new people at first but has a great memory and will remember you and get excited when she sees you!! Snuggles is a less-is-more kind of dog that needs an experienced owner without young children. She tends to get protective of new people and can get jealous if you are petting her and then go to pet another dog. She also enjoys playing and, as the name suggest, snuggling up to her people! Snuggles is getting a double mastectomy to remove some mammary tumors. They will be tested and we hope they are benign! Insecurity Canada feels less safe this week. A number of recent events have shaken our security to the core. Terrorism hit our shores with the tragic attacks on Canadian military personnel in Quebec and Ottawa, and on Parliament Hill. A Russian freighter came dangerously close to crashing off Haida Gwaii, renewing fears of the potential risk of increased tanker traffic in that area. And then there are the e-viruses — entero and ebola — that have North America on high alert. It’s enough to make one feel a little insecure! The natural response to this barrage of threats to our security is fear: circle the wagons; batten down the hatches; head for the hills; beam me up. But that’s no way to live. We all want security — medical,

financial, military and legal — for ourselves and our families. But security is a myth. Bad things happen. There are just too many things outside our control. The Bible tells us: “Our days on earth are like grass; like wildflowers, we bloom and die. The wind blows, and we are gone — as though we had never been here.” (Psalm 103:15-16, NLT) Our only real security is in God. The author of Proverbs wrote: “Whoever fears the Lord has a secure fortress, and for their children it will be a refuge.” (Proverbs 14:26, NIV) Times when we feel insecure and afraid can be the best of times if they help us reach out to the only true security. et those dancing shoes ready. Legendary bluesman Jim Byrnes is teaming up with rock/soul band Incognito to perform at the third annual Rockin’ for Reach benefit concert and dance. “It’s going to be great. We always read the crowd and feel what the crowd’s looking for,” says Incognito guitarist Rob Montgomery. The event takes place Saturday, Nov. 8 at 7 p.m. at the KinVillage Community Centre in Tsawwassen. It benefits the Reach Child and Youth Development Society. Montgomery says he’s known Byrnes for many years. “Earlier in my musical career I got a lot of inspiration going out to Jim Byrnes’ shows,” he says, adding the St. Louis native has given the Vancouver area the best education on blues. “When you went to a Jim Byrnes show, every musician in town that wasn’t working would always be at that show, as well as obvi-

ously lots of fans.” This is the third straight year Incognito, a staple in the Vancouver music scene for over three decades, has performed at Rockin’ for Reach. Reach helps a lot of people, says Montgomery. “They do a lot of good things.” Rockin’ for Reach has

raised a total of $20,000 for Reach’s Building for Children Together capital campaign to date. The campaign is raising funds to build a community-based child development centre in Ladner for children and youth with special needs such as autism, Down syndrome and FASD. The new centre will

include an inclusive preschool, therapy rooms, a large meeting hall and an accessible playground for community use. To date Reach has raised $2 million of the $4 million campaign goal, and is planning to break ground on the project in October of next year. Next Saturday’s event is

for ages 19 and up. There will be a 50/50 draw, a silent auction, a $5 rock ‘n’ roll photobooth and a cash bar. The silent auction includes a Vancouver Canucks jersey signed by Trevor Linden and an electric guitar autographed by

BB King. Tickets are $25. Tickets are available at Videoland in Ladner, Petra’s Café in Tsawwassen and at Reach (3-3800-72nd St.) in East Ladner. For more information visit www.rockinforreach. com.

Songs of Remembrance coming to Tsaw. BY

DAVE WILLIS

The Band of the 15th Field Artillery Regiment and the Vancouver Welsh Men’s Choir are getting together for a concert in Tsawwassen on Remembrance Day. With Glowing Hearts: Songs of Remembrance will feature music from the era surrounding the First World War, says Jim Tempest, director of music for the regiment band. He holds the same position with the Delta Concert Band, which recently celebrated its 50th anniversary with a special concert in Ladner.

Tempest, who is in his 30th year with the Canadian Forces, notes this year marks the centenary of the start of the Great War and the music of the era has provided a theme for the concert. The choir and band will each present solo segments and the concert will culminate with both groups performing together, he adds. Between the band, which is based in Vancouver, and choir there will be approximately 120 performers taking part. Part of the show will be a solemn recognition of all the men and women who’ve given their lives, Tempest says.

Well on Your Way Halloween is tonight but that doesn’t mean the candy is gonna stop. Halloween candy is everywhere, making it hard for people to resist the temptation to indulge. So, how do you avoid the temptation of Halloween candy? It’s easy if you follow these tips. Buy candy you don’t like. If you don’t like it, you won’t eat it. Now, unfortunately this means you are still giving away sugar to kids, but if you gotta give out candy, give out the crap you don’t like and won’t eat. Move the candy. If the office, or your home, has candy that can be seen and easily accessed, you will eat it. You see, when it comes to candy, out of sight means out of mouth. A recent study at Cornell University proved just this. Researchers gave 40 university female staff and faculty members 30 chocolate Kisses in either clear or opaque candy jars and placed them on their desks or six feet away. Each night,

the researchers counted how many candies were eaten and refilled the jars. Not surprisingly, the participants ate fewer candies when the Kisses were in opaque jars rather than clear candy jars on their desks and even fewer when the opaque jars were six feet away from their desks. Don’t buy candy. I know I am sounding like Captain Obvious with this statement, but if you fear you will eat too much candy, then don’t buy the stuff in the first place. Instead, give out non-food items to the kids like erasers, mini tattoos, stickers, toothbrushes, Glosticks, pencils or Halloween jewelry. Keep track of the wrappers. Nothing can put an end to mindless snacking faster than surrounding yourself with the evidence. For every “fun-size” chocolate bar you eat, put the wrapper right in front of you, and keep it there. Keep a tally of how many you eat and this will aid in helping you exercise self-control. Eat well, throughout the day. Eating healthy does not go away just because it’s a holiday. Eat clean all day, with three meals and a couple of snacks. Make sure you have a good ratio of complex

carbs, protein and fat with each meal as well. This will keep your blood sugar levels steady and your metabolism cruising along. Plan, not grab. Plan for the weekend (and a holiday) the same way you would plan for the week ahead. Planning, not grabbing, will keep your overall calories, fat and sodium on track. Buy candy late, throw it away early. The early bird does not get the worm when buying candy. Instead, the early bird runs the risk of eating the bag before the day and then having to fly to the store to get more. Buy the candy the day of Halloween and then as soon as you turn out the front lights that night, throw the leftovers away. Enjoy the party because of your friends and good times, not the food. I say this on every holiday because our society has turned our kitchen table into the main event, and it shouldn’t be. Your friends, family and the atmosphere are what you should be enjoying, not the food and drink. PJ Wren is a local personal trainer who keeps the lights turned off at her house on Halloween. Reach her at www.fitnesswithpj. com or www.gofitgals.com.

Halloween is a fun time for Kids & Adults but it can be scary for your pets. Remember to keep your pets indoors on Halloween night.

Haunted New Orleans Ghost tour tells tales of city with a spectral past

BY

LAUREN KRAMER

Optimist contributor

There’s nothing like a ghost tour to send chills down your spine, and if there’s one place where a tour like this feels believable, it’s New Orleans. People have been drawn to the city for hundreds of years, and many of them have found it difficult to leave, even in the afterlife. Rebecca Sell, a guide with Haunted History Tours of New Orleans, warns us what we can expect on our tour. “Most often people see orbs of light, but sometimes they see fingers,” she says candidly. “Some of the hauntings are emotional, so if you’re feeling sadness in a space, or a force of negative energy, trust your instincts. Something is there.” For the next two hours we shuffle around the French Quarter’s quieter

streets, our path dimly lit by flickering gas lamps. Historic buildings with ornate, wrought-iron balconies line both sides of the street, each one nursing its own story of days gone by. On Delphine Street, Sell draws us close to relate the story behind the LaLaurie Mansion, a building constructed in the 1830s and one of the most haunted locations in the city. “The LaLauries were a very wealthy, philanthropic couple who once lived here. He was a doctor, but there was something weird about Mrs. LaLaurie,” Sell says. “Her slaves just kept disappearing.” Turns out the doctor and his wife had been conducting horrific experiments on their slaves, mutilating and murdering them. The LaLauries disappeared the night of the city’s fire, never to be seen again, but firemen later found the disfigured remains of 40

and my son looked worried. “I’m feeling scared, mom,” he confessed. Sell’s tour is full of grotesque stories that frighten but somehow mesmerize us. Outside an abandoned building near the French Market, we learn about a group of kids that took their game of vampires to an extreme, drinking the blood of one of their friends and later hanging him after he lost consciousness. The French Market lights that illuminate our gathering flicker briefly and then go off suddenly. We stand in a pool of darkness, feeling the negative, discomforting energy of the building wash over us. No one wants to stay a minute longer, and with relief, we move in the direction of Bourbon Street’s throbbing music and inebriated crowds. The next day we meet local psychic Judith Faye in a restaurant courtyard. The elegantly dressed, grey-

slaves buried on the property. “I’ve had people on my tours get physically ill and feel nauseas as we approach this mansion,” Sell says. “They see slaves in the windows. And when they try to take pictures, their cameras suddenly refuse to work, or the pictures come out with orbs of light that weren’t visible at the time.”

Ever the skeptic, I urged my son to aim his camera lens at the dark windows on the third floor. The photograph we examined seconds later was very different to what we’d seen with our naked eyes. haired woman conducts private readings using astrology, tarot and clairvoyant images, and we pepper her with questions. “It’s a very old city, so of course it’s haunted,” she retorts. “But don’t take it too seriously — it’s entertainment!” The ghosts and macabre stories of the previous night’s haunted tour begin to dissipate and we move into the warm, sticky humidity of New Orleans’ French Quarter, gratefully absorbing its colourful, vibrant, boisterous personality that bursts from every corner. Ghosts and all, there’s nothing quite like New Orleans. n Halloween night, children and adults in costumes of witches, ghosts, zombies and bloodier characters roam the streets and our homes and the magic of play-acting is abroad. But in the long-ago roots of Halloween when people lived with the belief that spirits surrounded their lives and could wreak harm if they wished, there was another kind of magic and at times real fear. That’s because Halloween (then called Samhain) was the one night when the gates of death stood open and spirits were said to move freely and unobstructed in both directions. That’s why people relied on the magic of certain plants to protect them against any harm that might come from the unseen world. Often the magic of these plants was proved to them by their use in healing. Many of these plants are widely used today. Planted near a door, rosemary could bar evil spirits, protect you from bad dreams and stop you from catching the plague. Ivy could also stop evil spirits from entering but it had to grow on the walls of your house. Garlic was even more used because it was thought to evict evil spirits once they got in and ward off

vampires as well. Rock School final concert

SUBMITTED PHOTO

No 1 is one of several bands playing in Sunday’s final concert for this year’s Rock School Camp.

It’s time for South Delta to rock again. During the summer, Guitar Marty conducts Rock School Camps at his South Delta studio and players close in age and skills play together as a band. With the end of summer, fall comes and rehearsals get serious as the date of the final concert gets closer. The aspiring musicians get a little anxious, which Guitar Marty says is all part of the process. He says the bands with more experience start to

Sun Devils 3-peat at Red Serge

Senior girls volleyball team feasts on steady diet of top ranked schools with playoffs on the horizon BY

MARK BOOTH

mbooth@delta-optimist.com

South Delta Sun Devils made a significant statement while threepeating at the 15th annual Red Serge Classic in Port Coquitlam last weekend. Not only did the Sun Devils win the RCMP-sponsored senior girls volleyball tournament, they provided a glimpse of what might have happened had they been given a chance to defend their B.C. AAAA title later this month. South Delta was re-classified as a AAA size school this season after its enrollment of Grade 11-and-12 female students dipped below the minimum required to play against the largest schools in the province. An appeal to move up was also denied. The Red Serge tournament has always provided outstanding competition and this year’s edition was no exception. The 10-team event featured five of the six top ranked AAAA schools in the province, along with AAA No. 1 Timberline and South Delta (No. 2). The Sun Devils served notice by going 4-0 in pool play with wins over No. 4 Handworth (25-16, 2518), No. 6 Earl Marriott (25-21, 2520), No. 3 Kelowna (25-12, 25-17) and Oak Bay (25-18, 25-23). The girls opened the playoffs with a straight set win over Tweedsmuir, then survived a semi-final marathon with Kelowna (25-16, 17-25, 16-14). The impressive run was completed with a sweep of No. 1 Argyle (2516, 25-16) in the championship match. Grade 12 twins Megan and Nicole McNamara were named all-

stars. With another tournament at Pacific Academy this weekend, Red Serge was South Delta’s final opportunity to square off with elite AAAA opponents before turning their attention to the upcoming playoffs. “It really was (a chance to make a statement),” said head coach Dan Burgess. “The biggest loss of not being able to compete at quad A was the girls not having the opportunity to defend their title. “It was great getting to see many of those rivals one more time over the weekend but a little different doing the handshakes knowing we will not see them again.” Almost by design, the Sun Devils have used the Red Serge as a launching point. A third place result at Trinity Western and a runner-up finish to Timberline at Camosun College had bumped them from the top of the provincial rankings. Now they have re-established themselves as the team to beat later this month in Parksville. “With our style of play, the girls have grown accustom to playing their best when they need to play their best,” continued Burgess. “Those earlier tournaments also gave us a chance to get some other kids in there and that’s something I have always done.” Timberline bowed out in the quarter-finals to Kelowna at Red Serge. Burgess admires both teams. “When you look at their overall depth, I believe Kelowna is the best team in the province,” he added. “They held some of their top players out against us in pool play and were still missing one of their best players for the tournament. Timberline also

The Kushnir Boot will be on the line Saturday when the South Delta Sun Devils close out regular season play with a huge home tilt against the New West Hyacks at Dennison Park. At stake will be the rivalry trophy named after the late Bill Kushnir — a longtime teacher and administrator who had a leading role in developing the football programs at both schools.

TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 4

The Sun Devils (5-1-0) are also trying to lockup second place in the Western AAA Conference which would mean a more favourable draw in the upcoming provincial playoffs. South Delta will be looking to rebound after a 44-7 loss last Friday in Victoria to the Mt. Douglas Rams in a showdown of unbeaten teams. The Devils had no answer for Rams run-

ning back Seye Farinu who rushed for 218 yards and four touchdowns. He added another 99 yards on three receptions as the Rams scored all of their points by the end of the third quarter. A Hyacks (4-2-0) win Saturday would create a three-way log jam for second place as Vancouver College (3-2-0) would also be back in the mix. Kickoff is 1:30 p.m.
