The Tsawwassen terminal won’t be handling any additional Nanaimo-bound traffic after a B.C. Ferries proposal to increase efficiency was shot down by the provincial government this week.

A huge volume of additional ferry traffic won’t be diverted from the North Shore to Tsawwassen, according to B.C.’s transportation minister. Todd Stone said Wednesday the provincial government “has no interest in canceling or seeing the cancellation of the Horseshoe Bay to Departure Bay run.”

His statement came just a day after it was revealed B.C. Ferries would undertake a major review of its service to Vancouver Island, including the possibility of eliminating the Horseshoe BayNanaimo run and diverting that traffic to Tsawwassen. Reaction to news that ferry traffic could be headed to South Delta was swift and negative from many quarters around the province, including ferry users who
took to social media to lambaste the plan. Now that scenario, which more than likely wouldn’t have gone over well with Delta residents, is off the books. “I have got to give minister Stone absolute 100 per cent marks. He turned on a dime and when he heard and looked at it, it shows he understands his portfolio and he understands the highway system, not only here but in
Horseshoe Bay,” said Mayor Lois Jackson. “I am just delighted that he made such a decisive statement. I am more than thankful and very happy about his decision.” The major routes between Metro Vancouver and Vancouver Island account for 80 per cent of B.C. The proponent behind a contentious plan to erect radio towers in Point Roberts is appealing the Whatcom County hearing examiner’s rejection of the application. In a move that was not unexpected, BBC Broadcasting Inc. filed an appeal Wednesday with the county hoping to overturn the hearing examiner’s surprise announcement late last month. Just days before a public hearing on the proposal was scheduled to begin in Bellingham, the examiner announced he was denying the application and cancelling the hearing, citing the towers exceeded height limits in Point Roberts. BBC Broadcasting Inc. applied to erect five 45-metre (150-foot) steel towers at an undeveloped lot on McKenzie Way, just a few hundred metres from the border. The towers would have transmitted South Asian radio station KRPI, AM 1550, which broadcasts from studios in Richmond. The station currently broadcasts using antenna in Ferndale, Wash., but wanted a stronger signal for its Lower Mainland audience. The Federal Communications Commission granted a construction permit but a zoning permit was still required from Whatcom County. For over a year, opponents on both sides of the border have been fighting the application on several fronts, arguing KRPI’s operation in Ferndale caused considerable public nuisance due to interference with electronic equipment. Whatcom County council will hear the appeal. If that’s rejected, the proponent can appeal to the courts.

told me if we got an acute surgical program back tomorrow, we wouldn’t have the manpower to carry it out. We have to take it one step at a time,” Shaw said. However, it later turned out the press release was incorrect and that the surgical beds aren’t being offered. Shaw’s only response after he found out was that further meetings are planned with the health region. Noting the meeting with medical staff was constructive and reaffirmed
the importance of Delta Hospital in a network of acute care service, Fraser Health spokesperson Erin Labbé said the FHA committed to working with the hospital physicians to further strengthen the process for safely transferring surgical patients requiring overnight care to hospitals that have a surgical role. Fraser Health is committed to working with the Delta Hospital surgical department towards better understanding of the implications for an overnight
or short-stay unit, Labbé noted, adding the FHA clarified this would require significant resources and clinical capacity to ensure safe care. Longtime resident and community advocate Doug Massey, who helped form Friends of Delta Hospital, said his group wants clarification on what the region plans to do, if anything. Massey also said he’s concerned the health region is intimidating the doctors into backing down and not going public, but Shaw said that’s not been the case. Delta South MLA Vicki Huntington said until she’s had an opportunity to talk at length with Shaw and his colleagues, it’s difficult to know why the understanding of what happened with FHA is so different from FHA’s statement. “All I know is that we don’t seem to have gained much from the process and I want to find out why FHA is being so stubborn in the face of such concern from all of our doctors,” Huntington said. The Friends of Delta Hospital, meantime, will soon have a website up and running where residents can get more information or join the group.
many options would have been considered, including diverting all or just some of the Nanaimo traffic to Tsawwassen. Noting that billions will be needed on capital infrastructure for all the major routes in the next dozen years, he added factors that would have been considered included better access
via the new South Fraser Perimeter Road. Delta South MLA Vicki Huntington warned that if the idea had moved forward, traffic through the George Massey Tunnel would have got much worse, while the four-lane SFPR, which was designed to be a truck route to serve Deltaport, would have reached capac-
ity far more quickly. She also warned additional road infrastructure improvements would have been needed here to accommodate the extra volume. According to B.C. Ferries, the total number of vehicles going from Horseshoe Bay to Departure Bay, or vice versa, in 2013 was over 1.1 million.

Doctors at Delta Hospital are talking with Fraser Health, but it appears something is getting lost in translation. A meeting was held last Friday regarding the Delta Hospital Medical Staff Association’s concerns with the surgical program, issues the doctors made public and outlined in a recent letter to the minister of health. A joint press release issued earlier this week by the doctors and the newlyformed Friends of Delta Hospital community group offered encouraging news that the health region has agreed to several recommendations, including the establishment of four shortstay surgical beds to enlarge the scope of surgeries performed at the hospital. What the doctors were asking for, however, fell well short of their original demand for the full restoration of the surgical program. Unlike other hospitals in the region, the operating rooms in Delta close at 3 p.m., which means patients needing urgent procedures after that time have to be transferred by ambulance to other facilities.

Doctors have been vocal about their concerns with the surgical program at Delta Hospital. They met with Fraser Health last Friday, but it doesn’t appear much headway was made. That situation doesn’t appear to be changing anytime soon. In an interview after the press release was issued, Dr. Robert Shaw said getting the four surgical beds was an important first step toward making restoration of the surgical program possible. He noted the current beds at the hospital are for day surgery patients and not meant for overnight stays. “We all have that goal in mind (restoration of acute care), absolutely. What the anesthetist and the surgeons

review involving community consultation would have taken place for up to two years before any decision was made, B.C Ferries president and CEO Mike Corrigan told the Optimist, prior to Stone’s surprise announcement, that

Sex offender set to be released next Sunday Glendinning has served two-thirds of 27-month sentence BY
JESSICA KERR
jkerr@delta-optimist.com
The former Tsawwassen resident convicted of sexrelated charges with minors will be released from prison later this month. In May 2013, Jamieson Richard (Rick) Glendinning, 65, was sentenced to 27 months in prison after pleading guilty to three counts of indecent assault involving three minors — two males and a female. The incidents took place in Delta, Surrey and during two trips to the U.S. between 1969 and 1979.
The victims ranged in age from seven to 16. He was also charged with failing to appear in court after he failed to show up for a court appearance in the spring of 2012. He was spotted in Australia several months later, arrested and returned to the Lower Mainland. Glendinning was denied a bid for early parole in the spring, however his statutory release date, which marks serving two-thirds of his sentence, is Nov. 16. Glendinning’s release comes with a number of conditions, including no direct or indirect contact
with the victims or any member of the victims’ families without prior written permission from his parole supervisor; attending counseling; and, not to be in the presence of any children under 18 without another adult present, who knows his history and has been approved by his parole supervisor. He is also prohibited from being around places where children under 18 are likely to congregate, unless accompanied by an approved adult; and he is prohibited from accessing pornography or sexually explicit material.
Thank you to all who have died for our freedom, Blessings to those who protect from all regions. May a light shine before you to show you the way, while we offer our hearts To you, on this Remembrance Day. CAROL R. LEVASSEUR DD

The purpose of the Crime Beat is to educate and inform the public about some of the property crime trends occurring in South Delta and other files of interest. If you see anything occurring that you believe to be suspicious, call 911 for in-progress crimes and emergencies or 604-9464411 for other assistance. The following are some of the calls the Delta police responded to in the previous week: Tsawwassen • Oct. 27, 7:28 a.m., 3rd Avenue and 67th Street: Police located a suspicious vehicle reported in the area. All persons involved indicated they were collecting cans and vehicle was full of cans. All parties were cooperative with police and left the area. • Oct. 28, 2:46 p.m., Tsawwassen Drive and Highway 17: During a routine vehicle stop police found the driver was to be served with a notice prohibiting him from driving. The officer identified the driver via his photo on his driver’s licence and he was served with a four-month prohibition notice. The driver’s licence was seized and the driver was given a temporary licence allowing him to get home. • Oct. 30, 12:51 p.m., 1st Avenue: Complainant reported she had provided her credit card information and SIN number in response to two emails requesting this information in order for her to receive a tax refund. Subsequently she found the requests to be fraudulent and in the meantime the suspects had made cash transfers and store
purchases for approximately $10,000. Incident still under investigation.
• Nov. 1, 1 a.m., 17A Avenue and Beach Grove Road: Police were called to the area and met with an intoxicated female whose boyfriend had called police to report fireworks being fired at them and their pumpkin blown up with a firecracker. Police confirmed the incident had occurred but the suspects were gone on arrival. Complainants refused to give police any personal information. • Nov. 1, 1 a.m., 1100block of 56th Street: Two youth reported they were behind the local supermarket when three males threatened them. The suspects pushed the youth around and demanded money. One of the complainants turned over his change and both of the boys ran to the front of the building where they were picked up by their parents before reporting it to police. Area patrol proved negative. • Nov. 1, 4:38 a.m., 1500-block of 56th Street: Complainant reported he left his bike outside a business and observed a male get out of a taxi and attempt to steal the bike. The complainant tackled the male and then was attacked by another suspect who was armed with a knife. No injuries. Police to examine video surveillance from business and taxi company to identify the suspects. Ladner • Oct. 28, 5:56 p.m., 4400-block of 72nd Street:

MURPHY’S LAW How much traffic can a highway, even a shiny new one, possibly handle? I was pondering that question earlier this week after news broke that B.C. Ferries was looking to re-route all Vancouver Island-bound traffic through Tsawwassen. The idea was to shelve the Horseshoe Bay-Nanaimo run in the name of corporate efficiency, meaning an additional million-plus vehicles a year would end up on highways in these parts. Thankfully the proposal didn’t get far as Liberal cabinet ministers, sensing a growing outrage from the public, put an end to it quickly. Before that happened, however, a troubling school of thought began emerging, one that suggested the new South Fraser Perimeter Road is essentially fair game. A few years back when the billiondollar highway was still in the planning stage and decisions were being made about its alignment, we were repeatedly told it was, first and foremost, a truck route. Yet now it seems to be so much more, and its existence is being used to justify a pending traffic explosion. It was argued that access to the Tsawwassen terminal has improved with the opening of the SFPR late last year, yet it’s only convenient if you’re coming from certain locations and even then every vehicle adds to the congestion. Should the ferry proposal have come to fruition, that additional traffic would likely have come on stream around the same time the Tsawwassen First Nation’s two mega malls open their doors. Throw in TFN’s significant industrial and residential projects, which will really start generating traffic over the next few years, as well as development in and around Tsawwassen, including the Southlands, and you’re creeping, quite literally, toward carmageddon. The situation gets even worse if Terminal 2, which would double the number of container berths at Roberts Bank, and double the number of trucks calling on the port, receives government approval as expected. There’s no doubt the addition of the SFPR to the region’s highway network helps in that regard, but as far as I can tell, it’s still just a four-lane road. And most of these projects will come online before they even break ground on a new bridge. I certainly applaud B.C. Ferries’ efforts to become more cost efficient rather than simply upping fares, but re-routing traffic to Tsawwassen to help solve one problem simply creates another. There’s no doubt the SFPR is a shiny new highway, but there’s got to be a limit to how much it can handle.

COMMUNITY COMMENT In a few days we will time out to acknowledge Remembrance Day, as we have done each year for almost a century. Over the past decade, the day and ceremony has taken on new and more significant meaning in many of our lives. From peacekeepers in the 1960s to 1980s, Canadian soldiers have become combat troops, sailors have intercepted pirate boats and the air force today conducts sorties in the Persian Gulf. Conflict in our lifetime has transformed from major armies in battle to insurgents and armed bands, often with regressive political agendas. On Remembrance Day we remember Canadians who lost lives or futures by standing up to protect our freedoms and way of life. November 7, 2014 The Delta Optimist A9 Letters to the Editor
Editor: I had the occasion to visit the Vancouver Landfill last week from my home in Tsawwassen. I headed out on the new South Fraser Perimeter Road and did not see one directional sign telling me where to go as I headed east. The next thing I know I’m travelling over Highway 99 and see a cutoff on the other side of the road but
impossible to get to from my travels east. I then turned around at 80th Street in the Tilbury area and came back, but still no signs. I turned onto Highway 99 northbound, exited in Ladner and took Highway 99 southbound until I did see a very poorly placed and worded sign which, when I got to the road split, I lucked out and found the exit for the dump.
What utter nonsense! Landfill access was either forgotten or simply ill conceived by the geniuses that designed that very poor excuse for a highway. Can’t something be done to at least provide some decent signage to save the public and commercial vehicles the joy of having to drive around in circles to find the landfill? Ian Taylor

TFN makes history by hosting trustee candidates Editor: Many thanks to Tsawwassen First Nation for hosting the all-candidates meeting for Delta school board last Monday evening. Why at TFN? Did you know the Delta school board remains the only local governance which Delta and TFN residents share jurisdiction? This is good news for building new
and better relationships between Delta and TFN to benefit local students and our communities, now and in the future. It is also good news that history was made on Monday when for the first time TFN hosted a local school board candidates meeting. In addition, it may be the first time that an aboriginal candidate, Rhiannon Bennett, is on the
ballot for school board. It was an honour for all who attended, Delta and TFN residents alike. Thank you to Tsawwassen elder Ruth Adams for her warm welcome and blessing and to the 16 excellent school board candidates who presented their ideas and answered questions posed by the audience. Thirteen school trustee candidates answered questions Wednesday evening in North Delta. helping the district move forward even though they’re sometimes challenged by budgetary issues. Brad Sherwin said having a bold vision is fine, but hard, deliverable benchmarks should be set and achieved, while incumbent Nick Kanakos said the district’s vision ties in nicely with the B.C. Education Plan and that it’s the board’s responsibility to deliver both. Asked for their thoughts on the new provincial education plan, Carla Qualtrough cited several positives, including individualized support. On the role of trustees with parents, Scott Stoilen said listening to parents is a major part of what a trustee should do in order to better understand the issues.
School board hopefuls were also asked for their take on the hot button election issue in Vancouver regarding that school board rejecting a corporate funding program that could have netted up to $565,000. Chevron’s Fuel Your School program donates $1 each time drivers buy 30 litres of fuel or more at stations in five B.C. school districts this month and Vancouver would have been one of them. Saying there’s confusion over what it’s all about, Sherwin said the money comes from a charity set up by Chevron. “We don’t need corporate logos in schools. This is a charity and if it was offered to me, you’d bet I’d take it,” he said. Bennett said she would
reject the offer, saying it only enables the government’s underfunding of schools, but Thomas said it would be enabling and is something worth considering. Kanakos said he’s not opposed to developing partnerships as long as there’s no adverse impact on students, but Hurt said, “There’s no such thing as a free lunch,” and it would be a case of a corporation tapping into a school market. Incumbent Donna Burke noted the district already has an administrative policy on partnerships, but proposals should be considered on a case-by-case basis. Incumbent Val Windsor said, “I’m not prepared to turn down money but not ready to sell my soul either.” Only about 50 people, a number that included school district staff and candidate supporters, were in attendance at the North Delta meeting. Three candidates — Dale Saip, Fabian Milat and Nic Salter — were unable to attend. The Delta Teachers’ Association, which hosted an all-candidates forum last night in Ladner, has another one scheduled for Monday, Nov. 10 at Seaquam Secondary at 7:30 p.m.

increasingly shoddy appearance of schools, noted trustees should be independent, focusing on the best interest of the students. Saying boards must do more to hold government more accountable, Rhiannon Bennett said districts can’t just be “fighting for scraps” to ensure vulnerable students get the support they need. Susan Fetterkind, whose platform includes students “getting back to basics” in the classroom, said boards have to take on a role of advocacy for funding change, while incumbent Laura Dixon noted a trustee’s role is to deliver high quality programs within budget constraints. Laura Michelle Thomas suggested strategic longterm corporate partnerships could bring “bright shiny objects” for the district that it normally wouldn’t be able to afford. Corinne Atwood noted the board has a role in advocacy, but also to listen to the community, a similar view expressed by Bruce Reid, who said trustees have to respect the people who voted for them as well as district employees. On how the district’s vision can be achieved, Dixon said teachers are devising initiatives that are

Monday in North Delta. They say because the teachers’ union has already endorsed five candidates, the meetings are nothing more than a forum to showcase them. “As we see it, anyone organizing an all-candidates meeting must be impartial when creating the questions and moderating the forum,” said seven-term incumbent Saip in a press release. “It’s all about timing. Our concern is that everyone
in the room has already been told by the DTA who to vote for, and who not to vote for. How can this possibly make for open and honest conversation?” The DTA last week announced it would endorse Nic Slater, Rhiannon Bennett and Bruce Reid, who make up the Kids Matter Slate, as well as independents Brad Sherwin and former DTA president Val Windsor, the only incumbent to receive
endorsement. The DTA made its selections after having candidates fill out a questionnaire. President Paul Steer told the Optimist school boards need to do more as far as advocacy and putting pressure on government for better funding. Noting she didn’t seek DTA endorsement, incumbent Laura Dixon countered that the Delta board has been working collectively on funding issues.

Grace Boisclair is manager of Mud Bay Supply, a new store for outdoor cooking enthusiasts.
New HQ for outdoor chefs Outdoor cooking enthusiasts have a new store to check out in Delta. Mud Bay Supply, which opened in July, is an outdoor cooking centre, says store manager Grace Boisclair. “We carry the full line of Bradley products plus about 300 other barbecue, outdoor cooking products,” she says, adding the store is a division of Bradley Smoker. Smoking food is easy and provides tasty results,
says Bradley Smoker media coordinator Inge Dams. “This store’s all about having fun,” she says.
There are many options when it comes to smoking, says Boisclair, listing nuts, eggs, cheese and beer as a few examples. “People typically think smoking is just for meat
and fish, but it’s really endless.” The store is also looking at putting on demos and classes, ranging from sausage making and outdoor cooking to canning to knife skills. Mud Bay Supply, open Monday to Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., is at 8380 River Rd. Visit www.facebook.com/ MudBaySupply for more. It expects to have a website up by mid-January.

Ens to share Rescue’s success Marie Ens, co-founder and advisor to Rescue ministries in Cambodia, will speak at Tsawwassen Alliance Church next week. Originally a Saskatchewan girl, Ens is visiting Canada this fall in honour of her 80th birthday. The public is invited to hear from her on Wednesday, Nov. 12 at 7 p.m. When Rescue was founded as a Cambodian NGO in 2003, there were 15 houses for AIDS families. Today there are 23 AIDS families cared for, each in their own small house. Hope has also been restored to over 425 orphans. These children are placed into family groups with house parents, who raise either 10 girls or 10 boys in a home on one of Rescue’s three campuses. In addition, Rescue has also become a welcome home to a number of destitute grannies and provides support to 30 families offsite. Many of Rescue’s children are now young adults, some of whom are pursuing post-secondary education while living at one of Rescue’s three dorms.

God’s generosity My parents lived through the atrocities of the Second World War. They were both in their teens as war was declared and, I believe that as a direct result of their growing-up years, they often saw the world as a scary and bleak place. However, both of my parents had the amazing good fortune of living in a farming community. Each of their communities made certain to take care for everyone and no one was left behind, or went hungry. As they matured and began a life together, they became savvy at managing their resources. At the end of each month, when funds were low, my family of five would have very creative meals, full of pasta or tinned fish. To the end of his life, my Dad never liked pasta
— because it was a sign of poverty to him. At the beginning of each month, monies were allocated for food, utilities, piano lessons and church. My parents’ contribution to their church community was never questioned. My Dad would rather eat “Kraft Dinner” than miss contributing to the ministry of his church. My parents never saw their contributions as being particularly “generous” since they truly believed that God was the generous one in giving us the gift of life and salvation. So, on this Remembrance Day weekend, we remember those who gave us life and freedom — and respond to God’s generosity in every thing we do.

Thank you for your donations in Cpl. Cirillo’s honour! The day after Cpl. Nathan Cirillo was shot while standing on guard at the National War Memorial in Ottawa, Glacier Media, which owns this newspaper, started a crowdfunding campaign for his son’s trust fund. Thanks to donations from our readers, the campaign has almost reached $6,000. This outpouring of support is a testament to how deeply his death has touched us all. To all who have donated, a heartfelt thank you. To those who would like to contribute, the campaign will remain open until November 11.

At Tsawwassen Springs, for the third year, we encourage everyone to come out and play a round of golf or two to support a wonderful cause. For every green fee we receive on Monday, November 10th and Tuesday, November 11th, we will contribute $10.00 towards the Poppy Fund. Your poppy donations at work: For years, you’ve generously donated and proudly wore your poppies to show you remember. Did you ever wonder where the money goes? Although the annual poppy campaign only lasts for a couple of weeks each fall, poppy funds are hard at work all year long. Here are a few examples of your poppy donations at work • Assisting any person (and their dependents) who is serving (or who has honourably served) in the Canadian Forces and are in need of assistance. • Legion Veterans Transition Program (at UBC): a relief & recovery program for trauma-related stress from military service. • Housing for homeless veterans, such as Cockrell House in Victoria. • Disaster relief when declared by governments. • George Derby Veterans Home • Community medical equipment and research • Meals-on-wheels

Remembrance Day is a time to honour the brave men and women who have made sacrifices for their country. One of those soldiers Canada will be remembering next Tuesday is reservist Cpl. Nathan Cirillo, who was shot and killed last month as he stood guard at the National War Memorial in Ottawa. The gunman, identified as Michael Zehaf-Bibeau, was later killed near the Library of Parliament after a shootout with House of Commons security staff and RCMP officers. hit-and-run in St-Jean-surRichelieu, Que. The incidents help paint a picture that attacks that kill and create fear can happen anywhere in the world. Maj. Rev. Jim Short, a longtime reservist with the Canadian Army, said he was shocked by the recent events in Ontario and Quebec. “I’ve never really, up to that point considered, although it’s happened in other countries to military people, that one of us might be in danger wearing our uniform in a civilian [setting],” he said. Ladner Legion member Dave Mitchell, a Second World War veteran who

served with the Royal Engineers, said the events in Ottawa weren’t something you’d expect to happen in Canada. “That’s pretty sad when the poor guy is standing there, doing his duty and somebody comes along and pops you,” he said. “It’s cowardly actually.” The Ladner Legion held a ceremony at Memorial Park last month to recognize Cirillo and Vincent. Tsawwassen veteran Lloyd Jones, who served in the Second World War with the Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders, said he sincerely hopes young people realize they have to be cautious and watch what’s
going on. Short, who was deployed to Afghanistan in 2008 and spent eight months on the front lines of the conflict, is the minister at Ladner United Church. He said even though it’s been 100 years since the start of the First World War, a conflict that was termed the war to end all wars, there is still fighting. Short said this is not a time for us to put up a huge wall and turn our backs on the world. “I think it’s really important to be vigilant but not to start to live fearfully. If we start to live fearfully, we will close our hearts, then, to people in need.”

LEST WE FORGET
Message from the Mayor and Delta Council On November 11, please take time to remember those men and women in active service and veterans of past wars for their dedication and strength in fighting to protect our rights and freedoms.
Ladner’s ML Burke recalls the time she took her father to see the famous scifi film Star Wars. “He came along because he wanted to see why I was so excited. He just shook his head. He couldn’t get it. It was like blasphemy to him,” she said. It wasn’t real science for inventor Donald Hings (1907-2004), who was described during his 2006 induction into Canada’s Telecommunications Hall of Fame as a self-taught genius of science and engineering as well as a pioneer of wireless radio communications. His most well-known invention is the walkie-talkie, a two-way radio device that helped the Allies during the Second World War.
Units were delivered for use on battlefields by 1943, noted Burke, who writes a column in the Optimist and is also part of the Delta Seniors Planning Team, a volunteer group that advocates for seniors and others living or working in Delta. “That really helped the war effort. They said having that was like having a quarterback for the military,” she said. Hings, who was born in England and moved to Canada at a young age, developed the portable twoway voice radio apparatus while working with a mining company in the late 1930s. What he called a packset would later become known as the walkie-talkie. After returning to B.C. from Ottawa, where he was seconded by the National Research Council to help
redevelop his invention for use in battle, Hings set up shop, which was both lab and house, on Capitol Hill in Burnaby with his family. Hings registered over 50 patents over the years. Others began infringing on his various patents, said Burke. His lawyer said if Hings wanted to start challenging the infringements it would take time and lots of money and asked if he would rather fight or keep inventing, said Burke. “It was a no-brainer. He couldn’t not invent. He was just driven,” she said. Hings received a Member of the British Empire, awarded for outstanding contributions in radio communications during the Second World War, in 1946. He was presented with the Order of Canada in 2001.

Legion lends support Tsaw. branch assists groups through poppy fund Royal Canadian Legion members across the country support Canada’s serving military and retired veterans, says the Tsawwassen branch’s poppy trust fund chair. That’s an everyday occurrence, notes Al Wakarchuk. He adds the annual poppy campaign helps Canadians remember and that’s a very important aspect of the Legion. Wakarchuk says the Legion doesn’t sell poppies, but rather accepts donations for them. Last year the local branch raised over $30,000 with the poppy campaign. The donations were used to support the Legion Veteran’s Transition program at UBC (a relief and recovery program for trauma-related stress from military service), Legion service dogs for PTSD and trauma sufferers, the BCIT military skills conversion program, as well as residential assistance at the Amos Ferguson Manor Society and the George Derby Centre.

The branch also supports local community organizations like the Delta Hospital Foundation, Delta Hospice Society, Little House Society, Meals on Wheels, Deltassist and others. The branch is active in visitations, including to the hospice and hospital extended care, says past president Lloyd Jones He adds the Legion assists veterans in obtaining hearing aids and glasses. A number of events, as well as live music, take place at the local branch.
There are meat draws Friday, Saturday and Sunday as well as darts and 8-ball. There is also an annual veterans’ dinner. The Tsawwassen Legion has a Remembrance Day service planned for 1:30 p.m. The branch is located at 22-1835-56th St. Call 604943-0232, email rcl289@ dccnet.com or find them on Facebook at www.facebook. com/legion.289#. You don’t have to be a veteran to become a member of the Legion.
The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields.
MORE THAN EVER
Canada’s men and women of our Armed Forces, whether they be veterans or those currently serving our country at home and abroad, need our gratitude now more than ever. It is because of their efforts and sacrifice that we have the freedoms we cherish today. We owe them a great deal... it’s more than remembrance on this annual special day, it’s our eternal gratitude.

Museum’s new exhibit looks at life in Delta when First World War declared As war in Europe became a living reality, feelings between Delta’s British immigrants and other nationalities often bubbled over into conflicts and riots. Underlying this conflict was a realization the best farmland was already owned and developed, and it was harder to find work in factories due to economic conditions. The biggest concern that faced people
in the economic circumstances from 1900 to 1915 was: How would people earn a living in the midst of economic and political uncertainty? Off To War: A Spark to the Powder Keg, the Delta Museum and Archives Society’s latest exhibit, takes a look at the social conditions in Delta at the time the First World War was declared in Europe, and
how people continue to try to reconcile the impact of the war. The exhibit will be on display in the Delta Museum’s temporary gallery from Nov. 12 to Jan. 10. The Delta Museum, located in the heart of Ladner Village at 4858 Delta St., is open to the public Tuesday to Friday, 9:30 a.m. to 4:30p.m.

inger Laura Gillespie will pay tribute to Canadian music star Anne Murray with an upcoming show in
Ladner. Snowbird is set for Genesis Theatre on Saturday, Nov. 15. The multimedia performance includes songs from throughout Murray’s career, says Gillespie. She starts with more recent tunes and “then go back in time gradually until we get back to the very beginning with all the songs that made her a star in the first place.” Gillespie, who, like Murray, is from Nova Scotia, says she loves all of the famous artist’s songs, adding Bidin’ My Time is probably one of her favourites to sing. “And, of course, Snowbird. Everybody loves that one.” She says she loaded a box set worth of songs, about 60 or 70, onto her phone and listened to them constantly, eventually memorizing them all. “Some of those songs I just love and we never get a chance to do. You have to do all the hits and there’s just so many of them.” Gillespie says her mom used to listen to Murray’s music constantly while she was growing up.

Laura Gillespie will perform an Anne Murray tribute show at Genesis Theatre in Ladner next Saturday.
Gillespie, who now lives on Vancouver Island, recalls taking her mom to see Murray perform in Halifax years ago. “That was something I just never forgot.” Murray, who has sold millions of albums over her career, is a four-time Grammy winner and has over 20 Juno Awards to her credit. She is a member of the Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame, the Juno Hall of Fame, and the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame. “It’ll be a great show and a lot of fun,” Gillespie says of next Saturday’s show, which begins at 7 p.m. Tickets are $25.50. In the mood for some laughs? Comics Ivan Decker, Kyle Bottom, Billy Mitchell and Mark Tizya will be performing at a fundraiser at the Tsawwassen Arts Centre next Saturday. They’ll be joined by singer/ guitarist Jarome Lochkrin. “It’s going to be a killer show,” says Mitchell, an experienced Tsawwassen comedian who will serve as host and emcee. Both Decker, a former Ladner resident, and Bottom, a South Delta Secondary grad, performed with Mitchell at an event earlier this year.
“They’re both great acts,” he says. They have both performed at Just for Laughs festivals. Tizya, “a tremendously jolly fellow,” is a former student of Mitchell’s, who taught a stand-up comedy class in Tsawwassen a few years ago. The upcoming comedy night is a fundraiser for a South Park Elementary’s 2015 Quebec trip. Tickets will not be available at the door. Advance tickets are available at Lucky Surf & Skate and Albany Books, or email billycomedy@live.com. Tickets are $20. The event is for those 19 and up. Doors open at 7 p.m. Showtime is 8 p.m.

Poppies: The remembrance flower BY
CHRIS MCBEATH
Optimist contributor
A
s delicate as they appear, corn poppies are an enduring
flower. Scattered randomly by the wind, their seeds flourish in freshly turned soil, often turning just-ploughed fields into unexpected seas of crimson. In the shellshocked and grave-ridden landscapes of Flanders during the First World War, those seas became oceans of sudden beauty across the morass of sodden wasteland. That the blood-red poppy should become such a significant symbol of remembrance is thanks only in part to John McCrae’s famous poem, In Flanders Fields. It was, in fact, an American woman, Moina Michael, who responded to McCrae’s clarion call to keep the faith; she conceived the poppy movement. Ironically, poppies never caught on in the
United States, but like the seed the idea scattered and took hold overseas. First in war-torn France where Madam Guerin started to hand-make poppies to raise money for war orphans and destitute women, and then to the British Foreign Legion, which adopted, evolved and have now mentored the concept for almost 100 years. Nowhere is this better seen than at the Menin Gate Memorial in Ypres, Belgium, where every night you can participate in, or simply witness, The Last Call ceremony, one of the most poignant daily acts of remembrance. Ypres witnessed some of the Great War’s bloodiest battles and was razed to rubble twice. Its rebuild, however, was so carefully executed the authenticity of its historic charm belies that truth. Located at the city gate nearest to the Front, the Menin Gate Memorial is a barrel-vaulted mausoleum

where the names of 54,986 Commonwealth soldiers whose bodies were never found are etched into the marble walls.
The names of the remaining 34,984 missing are remembered at Tynecote Cemetery, although in both cases those lists are con-
stantly changing. Even today, human remains continue to be unearthed. Each receives a proper burial in one of the region’s many war cemeteries of the various nations that fought during 19141918. If the remains can be identified, the relevant name is removed from the Menin Gate walls and from Tynecote. In Ypres, poppies proliferate year round — woven into wreaths, crosses and bouquets of gratitude that are placed beneath the gate’s triumphant arch and in its rooftop garden. Here, every night, bugles sound out the Last Post. Here, the act of remembrance is honoured by anyone who wishes, either as onlooker or participant, and is where veterans and children alike lay wreaths for fallen comrades, the infirm, family members, causes and charities. It is a generosity of spirit that makes the Last Post such a moving and personal
experience. Although attendance dwindled as veterans died, McCrae’s words have touched the hearts of younger generations. What attracted only a handful of people a decade ago has grown to include more than a hundred almost every day come snow, sleet and rain. And at 11 a.m. on Remembrance Day, the crowds swell to crush capacity and usually include members of the British and Belgium royal families. Nov. 11 is the only time when poppies fall from the gate’s vaulted ceiling in their thousands, commemorating the more than 10 million military personnel who died during what is widely considered the deadliest conflict in human history. Local photographer debuts works in Ladner
Tsawwassen’s John R. Ostaf presents 14 pieces of photographic visual art in his inaugural exhibition, SCAPE, now on display at the Ladner Pioneer Library. The largest measures five feet in length. He will introduce three portfolios — OceanScape, SaragassoScape and MemoryScape of Boundary Bay — at an opening reception on Thursday, Nov. 13 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Rather than simply presenting pictures captured by the camera, Ostaf alters content, colours, format and any other aspect of each image to enhance its moment in time. His intention is to retain the story or memory of the original image with this creativity so as to enhance the potential memory that was visualized.
VIP ROOM
WE TALK TO COCO ROCHA
Self-taught, Ostaf has acquired creative insight from dozens of professionals during the past six years, gaining substantial experience and awards. He began as a high school photographer, casually using a film camera during his business career before moving on to a full-frame digital Nikon camera. His landscapes tend to encompass the viewers’ past, present and future thoughts by visualizing their own presence within the selected artwork. His creativity has led to this exclusive showing of artistic images to create memories and future value of the images to those who value what the art may provide to their personal vision. The exhibition will continue daily until Dec. 31. Call 604-946-6215 for hours.
At the grand opening of large and in charge Sephora on Robson Street, we asked Richmond native and super model Coco Rocha all the tough questions.

Sun Devils return to field hockey provincials BY
MARK BOOTH
mbooth@delta-optimist.com
South Delta Sun Devils head to next week’s B.C. AAA Field Hockey Championships in West Vancouver having made major strides over the past six weeks. Coming off a provincial silver a year ago, the Sun Devils’ roster went through a major overhaul with eight key players having graduated. Longtime head coach Neil McLennan had his work cut out for him, trying to get his inexperienced team up to speed to contend
with B.C.’s top programs. South Delta played in three tournaments over consecutive weekends and capped the hectic run with a fifth place finish at the prestigious Bridgman Cup in Victoria. The girls then came close to defending their title at the Fraser Valley Championships, falling 3-0 last week to a talented squad from Heritage Woods secondary. “I’m really pleased at how far we have advanced as a team,” said McLennan. “There are so many aspects of our game that have improved over the past month or
so. Our defence is stronger, and we pass and move much more effectively. “As I mentioned to the girls (after the Valley final), sportsmanship requires us to play our most inspired hockey against very good teams, with good umpires at a good facility. Given those conditions, then if we play our potential, we can always celebrate that no matter the out come of the game. Our effort was exemplary from our key players as well as those off the bench. The girls had nothing to hang their heads about.”
The Valley championship game was scoreless at the half with South Delta being denied an excellent chance in the 20th minute on a terrific sliding save by the Heritage Woods goalie. The Port Moody school struck for a pair of goals in a five minute span to take control. The Devils pressed right until the final whistle, even generating a couple of late penalty corners but to no avail. The 16-team provincial tournament starts on Wednesday and concludes Friday.

Run Inn clinic participants impress at Vancouver race
A near five month journey culminated in over 60 Run Inn clinic members entering the Vancouver Rock N’ Roll 10 KM Run and Half Marathon. The extremely popular racing series south of the border was making its debut in Canada and was an ideal event for the Run Inn members to get a taste of a competitive environment. Their 19-week program took place on Saturday mornings as runners/ walkers were scattered throughout the streets of Tsawwassen — completing their weekly workout and slowly achieving longer and longer distances. The hard work resulted in 15 members entering the 10 km segment of the race and 35 more participating in the half marathon. More than 10 achieved personal best times. Leading the contingent was Courtney McEwan who was the first female to cross the finish line in the 10 km race in an astounding time of 39 minutes and 57 seconds. Don MacDonald achieved a time of 41.03, good enough for second place in his age group. Both were amazing achievements in races that exceeded 11,000 entries. The Run Inn is gearing up for the start of its next clinic Jan. 3 which leads up to the Vancouver BMO Half Marathon. For more information visit www.runinn.com or call 604-9434661.

Ladner goalkeeper named to conference all-academic team Mike Warn sets new shutout record at South Carolina school
Michael Warn is thriving on and off the field at Francis Marion University in South Carolina. Not only has the Ladner goalkeeper backstopped the Patriots men’s soccer team to an impressive 12-3-2 record, he has been recognized for his work in the classroom. The Delta secondary graduate has been named to the 2014 Capital One Academic All-District III Men’s Soccer Team for NCAA Division II. Warn has compiled a 3.71 grade point average as a biology major. As a first-team selection for the Capitol One squad, he becomes eligible to earn Academic All-American honours, with voting to be done in the near future. Mike The sophomore was selected to the Peach Belt Conference Presidential Honour Roll for 2014, and has been picked for the FMU Swamp Fox Athletic-Academic Honour Roll each of his first two semesters. He is also a member of ATO fraternity and serves on Francis Marion’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). On the field, Warn posted a new school record with his ninth shutout of the season
as the Patriots advanced to the conference semi-finals with a 2-0 win Tuesday over the University of Montevallo. The reigning conference goalkeeper of the week, posted six saves, the most difficult of which was on a curling 11-yard shot by Alex Morton in the 31st minute. Warn has played every minute in goal this season and owns a 1.01 goals against average. He has registered 53saves and a .746 save percentage. He ranks first in the conference in wins and shutouts. Twice he has earned the PBC goalkeeper of the week award. To be eligible for the Capital One Academic program, a student-athlete must be a starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative grade Warn point average of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, and have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings. Warn was the lone Canadian born player to earn academic conference team honours although he was hardly the only international player. The team consisted of: four players from the United Kingdom; two each from Brazil and Germany; while Serbia and New Zealand nationals rounded out the selections.

Here are just some of our many testimonials we've received from our recent clients. Over the past few months I have had the pleasure of dealing with the Fraser Elliott Group. My mother's condo had been on the market for 18 months with two separate realtors. We had taken the suggestions of the last realtor and had the place completely painted with a neutral pallet but alas, it sat empty for the next few months with only a couple of showings. I had hesitated in calling Fraser Elliott Group because in all honesty, they had so many listings and I didn't think they would pay much attention to mom's condo. I finally made the decision to call them and was pleasantly surprised. Their professionalism, track record and assurance that mom's condo was just as important as any listing they had as well as their explanation of their unique marketing strategies made me choose them with confidence. Inside of a week we accepted an offer on the condo, fairly close to list price (which was the same price as the previous realtor had listed it). Unfortunately before subjects were removed, the deal fell through however, Fraser Elliott Group had another offer quickly and the condo sold close to list price. The condo was basically sold in just over a month with this group in a market where condo sales were fairly flat. Shortly after that, we decided to sell our family home. There was a lot of sentiment involved in the decision as it is the home my father built. in 1968 with pride and love. We bought the home from my mom 15 years ago after my dad passed away and happily raised our children there. When Fraser and Garrett came to see us I expressed that I did not want to sell to someone who was going to tear it down and it was important that the people who buy the house loves it as much as we have. They didn't make me feel silly, in fact I believe they empathized with how I must be feeling. The interest was overwhelming once listed. The drive by's and showings were numerous and the house sold within 6 days to the perfect young couple who look at the home as theirs for the next 40 years. Presently my daughter is using Fraser Elliott Groups buyers agent Jennifer to help her find an apartment. She has been wonderful and patient with our daughter who is a first time buyer. I've been involved all the way on the side lines and Jennifer could have easily deferred to me a number of times, but is dealing directly with our daughter teaching and walking her through this monumental step in her life. Fraser Elliott's team has been so professional, patient and understanding. They've explained who they are, how they market and walked us through every stage giving us sound advice every step of the way. They provided a consult with a stager for hints to make the house look better for pictures and showings; there was plenty of notice given for showings; the photographer was professional and quick with an awesome results; the person that came in to take accurate measurements of house and property was efficient and fast. Its no wonder the Fraser Elliott Group is #3 in the world. The team is so professional and so on the ball. They take all of your comments and concerns to heart , offer sound, fair advice and definitely do the best for their client. I highly recommend their services. In my opinion and having dealt with a number of realtors recently, they are the best out there. - Janelle Clegg
Our home had been on the market for two years with little success when we resolved to contact Fraser Elliot and his group in order to market the property. What attracted us initially and what we wanted to take advantage of, was Fraser's high profile and his extensive and comprehensive marketing plan. What we didn’t expect was was the quality of the professionals in his group that handled all aspects of marketing and sale. The service they delivered was thorough, timely and effective. Above all, the service felt personal. Our home was SOLD within two months of listing at a price point we were very comfortable with. Perfect! - Peter Woeste We had excellent service from the Fraser Elliott team with our recent house sale. We would particularly like to recognize the expertise and advice provided by the team as well as the effective advertising. Thank you! - John Higenbottam Our experience working with the Fraser Elliott group on the sale of our home, was great. We really liked the team approach that they provided. Always someone at the office to answer your email or show your house. The showings were by appointment rather than open house which we really liked. We also really appreciated Kash (a stager) that they provided free of charge, to help us get the home ready for photos and staging. I’m not sure we would have thought of that ourselves and it really helped. We had extra furniture to move and the free loaner moving truck provided came in handy when moving it to a storage unit. The team of Garrett, Amber and Rachel who primarily showed our home were all great to deal with, friendly and personable, and the feedback they gave us after viewings, kept us positive. There were weekly updates and it really felt that the team was doing everything they could, to ensure our house got the exposure needed and the right buyer was found. Thank you to every member of the Fraser Elliott Group!! - Rosalind Cleroux This is how efficient the Fraser Elliott team is… some kids took our for sale sign as a prank and put down the street. Fraser’s team had it back in its spot before we even knew it was gone! This is the second time we have used Fraser Elliott to sell our home and we cannot say enough about how professional and efficient he and his team are!! From our first meeting where Fraser and Garrett spent three hours discussing the upcoming sale to having the sold sign on two weeks later… they are awesome!! The first time we used Fraser to sell our home it was done in a day!!! Now as we look to buy another home we are working with one of his team again!! We would recommend him to our friends and family in a minute!! Thanks so much to all of you for your hard working in getting the job done!! - Sandra and Philippe
The Fraser Elliott Team, l'd like to take this opportunity to extend my gratitude to you and your entire staff on what l consider to be an outstanding job on the sale of my condo. From our first meeting you told me that you would treat the sale of my condo the same way you would handle selling a $3 million home. You and your team stood by your word and did exactly that. I couldn't be happier! With the extremely tight window time you and your team was working with you made it all fit together. An outstanding performance by you all and my thanks and gratitude for all your hard work. I feel privileged to have met and worked together with such a congenial group as yourselves and will pass my positive recommendations on the appropriate people. Thanks again for the outstanding effort you all put in for me. Sincerely,
Thank you for your excellent service. We really appreciate all your team’s efforts on the house photos and staging. We felt your team was so professional throughout the showing. We will highly recommend Fraser to everybody we know. Thank you again.
- Dave Ennis
Fraser’s team are experts in their field. I was blown away by their level of communication with me, I couldn’t believe they were at every showing and giving me feedback on how it went. I could tell right away that Fraser heavily invests in selling your product, from advertising material, videos, photography, facebook, newspapers, web presence and he even sent a complimentary stager to re-arrange my home to maximise our selling potential. I don’t know why you wouldn’t use Fraser Elliott to sell your home.
It used to be that to sell a house you engaged a Realtor to provide an MLS listing and hope for a sale. Fraser Elliott with his team at the Fraser Elliott Group have completely changed the role of the Realtor in South Delta. From the first meeting to discuss a potential listing through to the removal of subjects you knew someone was in control and driving the sale, at no time did we feel we were in a wait and see what happens relationship. Whether you are looking to sell your home or buy a new home, we would strongly recommend the Fraser Elliott Group. - Steve and Julie Knight From past real estate experience we firmly believe that dealing with a high profile realtor who is supported by a team of experts is the way to sell a home. Hence, when we decided to sell our Ladner home a call to Fraser Elliott was the logical first move. Our experience with Fraser and his group exceeded all our expectations. Firstly, the marketing done by Fraser Elliott is targeted to a larger and better defined audience than that of other local realtors .The professionalism and communication skill of the entire group is exceptional Our main contact was Garrett Chu who kept us constantly informed of any new developments. The team approach, with backup in the office made all aspects of the sale seamless. We would not hesitate to recommend Fraser Elliott to our friends and acquaintances. - John and Shirley Jaye We are so happy with the job that the Fraser Elliot team did for us. They helped us with selling our current home and finding our new home. Jennifer and Garrett have tons of experience and are extremely professional agents. We liked the extras that came with Fraser Elliot. The team approach meant we never needed to wait to talk to someone if we had a question. The free consultation with an interior designer/stager was a nice touch. Our house sold in no time and we found our dream home! - Leeann K. and Brian T.
-T&M We had excellent service from the Fraser Elliott team with our recent house sale. We would particularly like to recognize the expertise and advice provided by the team as well as the effective advertising. Thank you! - John and Donna Higgenbottem
- Ian Working with Fraser, and his amazing team, has been an all around great experience from day one. We had listed our house previously with a different agent and were not excited about the process of trying to sell our home again. We took their advice on pricing and any little changes we could do to make our home look its very best, and we were thrilled to accept a great offer within a few days, before it even hit MLS! We could not be happier with our decision to go with Fraser and his team and would highly recommend them to anyone buying or selling in the South Delta area. Thanks! - Ash and Laura Thomas To all the staff at Fraser Elliott Group, The one word that seems to exemplify your company is enthusiasm, from Fraser’s first look at our property to each of the staff that had anything to do with the sale, each of you showed such enthusiasm and gave us such support, you have no idea who much that had been lacking from previous efforts.Another word is professionalism, every detail was handled with such a competence and professionalism, the staging advice, the incredible photography even the impressive wording on the listing all first class and obviously very effective. But the final proof of Fraser Elliott’s excellent service came with the sale of our property in under 30 days from our first meeting. That in itself, speaks more eloquently than any other praise we might offer. And we do offer that praise, and, recommendation to anyone who is looking for enthusiastic, professional and excellent service in their real estate company. Look no farther than Fraser Elliott! With our thanks, - Alex and Cindy Adamson
