The Tsawwassen terminal won’t be handling any additional Nanaimo-bound traffic after a B.C. Ferries proposal to increase efficiency was shot down by the provincial government this week.

A huge volume of additional ferry traffic won’t be diverted from the North Shore to Tsawwassen, according to B.C.’s transportation minister. Todd Stone said Wednesday the provincial government “has no interest in canceling or seeing the cancellation of the Horseshoe Bay to Departure Bay run.”

His statement came just a day after it was revealed B.C. Ferries would undertake a major review of its service to Vancouver Island, including the possibility of eliminating the Horseshoe BayNanaimo run and diverting that traffic to Tsawwassen. Reaction to news that ferry traffic could be headed to South Delta was swift and negative from many quarters around the province, including ferry users who
took to social media to lambaste the plan. Now that scenario, which more than likely wouldn’t have gone over well with Delta residents, is off the books. “I have got to give minister Stone absolute 100 per cent marks. He turned on a dime and when he heard and looked at it, it shows he understands his portfolio and he understands the highway system, not only here but in
Horseshoe Bay,” said Mayor Lois Jackson. “I am just delighted that he made such a decisive statement. I am more than thankful and very happy about his decision.” The major routes between Metro Vancouver and Vancouver Island account for 80 per cent of B.C. The proponent behind a contentious plan to erect radio towers in Point Roberts is appealing the Whatcom County hearing examiner’s rejection of the application. In a move that was not unexpected, BBC Broadcasting Inc. filed an appeal Wednesday with the county hoping to overturn the hearing examiner’s surprise announcement late last month. Just days before a public hearing on the proposal was scheduled to begin in Bellingham, the examiner announced he was denying the application and cancelling the hearing, citing the towers exceeded height limits in Point Roberts. BBC Broadcasting Inc. applied to erect five 45-metre (150-foot) steel towers at an undeveloped lot on McKenzie Way, just a few hundred metres from the border. The towers would have transmitted South Asian radio station KRPI, AM 1550, which broadcasts from studios in Richmond. The station currently broadcasts using antenna in Ferndale, Wash., but wanted a stronger signal for its Lower Mainland audience. The Federal Communications Commission granted a construction permit but a zoning permit was still required from Whatcom County. For over a year, opponents on both sides of the border have been fighting the application on several fronts, arguing KRPI’s operation in Ferndale caused considerable public nuisance due to interference with electronic equipment. Whatcom County council will hear the appeal. If that’s rejected, the proponent can appeal to the courts.
