Stepping up for the kids Dave Lemire set to tackle Gingell stairs for four hours in Children’s Hospital fundraiser BY

DAVE WILLIS

dwillis@delta-optimist.com

Ladner’s Dave Lemire plans on tackling the steps at Fred Gingell Park for four straight hours as a fundraiser for B.C. Children’s Hospital. “When I decided I was going to do it, it was going to be a challenge,” he said. Lemire, the produce manager at Save-On-Foods in Tsawwassen, is hoping to promote child fitness as well with his Climb for Kids fundraiser. He’s inviting parents to bring their kids to the park to do a little climbing on the stairs as well. Optimist columnist Mike Schneider recently described the park’s stairs as Tsawwassen’s version of the Grouse Grind. Explaining why he wanted to do the fundraiser, Lemire said when he started as a produce manager in Tsawwassen, he became good friends with Johnny, a young kid who would visit with him while his mom would do her

grocery shopping. Johnny, who had a condition called Apert syndrome, passed away in 2008. Lemire eventually became good pals with Myles McHattie, who gave a touching eulogy at Johnny’s funeral. McHattie, 22, has cerebral palsy. Lemire said McHattie is his coach but more so his inspiration. McHattie said he’s looking forward to seeing how far Lemire can get during his marathon climb. “I might be crawling, but I’m not going to quit,” Lemire said. Climb for Kids is set for Saturday, Nov. 29 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Fred Gingell Park, 265 English Bluff Rd., Tsawwassen. There will be a barbecue, with Delta firefighters doing the cooking, from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. There is also an online fundraising page set up at https://secure.bcchf. ca/SuperheroPages/team. cfm?Event=OFG&Team=8779.

They may have won a round but the fight isn’t over. That’s the warning from Point Roberts and Tsawwassen residents continuing to fight the contentious proposal to erect radio towers in the American peninsula. “Too much is at risk for us not to have our lawyers present in the appeal proceedings to continue their winning arguments to stop the towers,” said Nancy Beaton of the Cross Border Coalition Against the Towers. “We cannot rely on Whatcom County’s legal team successfully arguing this.” BBC Broadcasting Inc. wants to erect five 45 metre (150-foot) steel towers at an undeveloped lot on McKenzie Way in Point Roberts. The towers would transmit South Asian radio station KRPI, AM 1550, which broadcasts from studios in Richmond to a Lower Mainland audience. Also known as Sher-EPunjab AM 1550, the station currently broadcasts using antenna in Ferndale, Wash., but wants to relocate them for a stronger signal. The Federal Communications Commission granted a construction permit but a zoning permit is required from Whatcom County. Just days before a county

Industry Canada has responded to the coalition’s 3,500-name petition, contending the FCC was aware of Tsawwassen when it made its decision. public hearing on the proposal was scheduled to begin, the hearing examiner announced he had denied the application because the towers exceeded the height limit in Point Roberts. In a move not unexpected, BBC Broadcasting Inc. then filed an appeal with county hoping to overturn that decision. Whatcom County council will hear the appeal and the residents’ group wants its lawyer there to counter any arguments by the proponent. Beaton said with outstanding legal bills in the amount of $20,000 and another $15,000 needed for the appeal, the coalition is still in fundraising mode. “We need Tsawwassen

residents to donate,” she said. Coalition member and Point Roberts resident Armene Belless said the proponent could take the fight to the courts if not successful at the council appeal. She noted the “money hemorrhage” for residents will stop if the council upholds the examiner’s ruling because at that point the county must pay for the legal defence. Noting the radio towers wouldn’t be important public infrastructure as the proponent claims, Belless said the appeal may be heard in January at the earliest. For over a year, opponents on both sides of the border have been fight-

ing the application, arguing KRPI’s operation in Ferndale caused considerable public nuisance due to interference with household electronic equipment. Residents also expressed concern about potential chronic health effects due to electromagnetic radiation. Belless said on another front the coalition has filed an objection to the radio station’s licence renewal application with the FCC. Meanwhile, Industry Canada has responded to a petition forwarded to Ottawa asking the federal government to intervene with the FCC on the application. Noting discussions have taken place with the FCC, the letter to residents states

The Cross Border Coalition Against the Towers is holding an event at the Reef Tavern in Point Roberts to raise money for the legal fees to fight the radio towers application. Set for Saturday, Nov. 29, the event is dubbed “Dancing with Tony Barton & Friends” and will feature musical entertainment, food, dancing, a 50/50 draw and a raffle for a 55-inch 3D Smart TV and DVD player, as well as other prizes. Tickets for the TV grand prize are $25 and only 200 will be sold. They are available at Banner Bank or Auntie Pam’s, both in Point Roberts. The fundraiser at the Reef Tavern takes place from 6 to 10 p.m. that while the application by BBC Broadcasting lnc. did not specify the population of Tsawwassen in its maps, the FCC confirmed it was aware of the Canadian population and was satisfied with the commitment from KRPI to resolve any blanketing interference issues. Check notowers.webs. com for more information about donating to the legal defence.

The Delta Police Department is investigating the conduct of a Vancouver police officer after he failed a roadside screening test earlier this month in

to a roadside screening test administered on an approved screening device, which the driver subsequently failed,” said department spokesperson Sgt. Sarah Swallow. The driver was issued a 90-day immediate roadside

Bennett makes history winning seat on board Trustee wants more done for aboriginal students BY

SANDOR GYARMATI

Delta Votes 2014

sgyarmati@delta-optimist.com

Rhiannon Bennett made history in last weekend’s civic election by becoming the first aboriginal elected to Delta public office. Bennett, a member of the Musqueam First Nation, whose territory extends into South Delta, was elected as a school trustee as a member of the Kids Matter slate. Bennett was vocal during the campaign on the need for increased education funding from the provincial government and also said the public school system must work on eliminating systemic racism. Bennett wants more to be done to address the needs of aboriginal students in Delta and improve their learning outcomes. About 500 kids in the Delta district are aboriginal. Meanwhile, nobody from the Tsawwassen First Nation ran in the Delta election, and few have ever tried. When it comes to the

Rhiannon Bennett, who was elected to the Delta school board last Saturday, is a member of the Musqueam First Nation. TFN, its members and those living on TFN lands are eligible to run for the Delta school board and vote for trustees because the TFN is part of the Delta school district. The TFN has plans to eventually pull out of the school district, which means nobody from the First Nation would be able to run or vote for the board of education. It was noted during an all-candidates forum hosted by the TFN last month that the First Nation would be

looking into eventually building its own school and creating its own education district. The TFN’s neighbourhood plan calls for an elementary school. The opportunity for a TFN member to be on Delta council is now closed following the First’s treaty coming into effect five years ago. Since the TFN is now its own jurisdiction, complete with its own laws and legislature, anyone living there can’t run for Delta council. Also, anyone living at the TFN can’t vote for Delta council either, which will include thousands of nonnative residents who will move there as major housing developments are completed in the coming years.

The election results didn’t get Delta Connect candidate Nicholas Wong down in the dumps as he celebrated with a little karaoke Saturday night. Wong finished eighth.

Rookies once again lose OPEN name recognition battle HOUSE Newcomers unable to make inroads on Delta council BY

SANDOR GYARMATI

sgyarmati@delta-optimist.com

The long streak of independent newcomers not being able to knock off well-established incumbents continued in Saturday’s civic election. Campaigning on a need for change and fresh ideas, Delta council candidates Peter Mattoo, Jennifer Thoss, Lori Mayhew, Nicholas Wong, Johann Ackermann and Ron Calliou couldn’t defeat a sitting councillor, let alone significantly change the makeup of council in one fell swoop. Delta council members have come and gone over the years, but only two incumbents have been defeated in over 20 years. Wong, Thoss, Mayhew and Ackermann tried to buck that trend by joining forces on the Delta Connect slate, pooling their resources in an attempt to get their message across, but still came up short despite a seemingly well run campaign. Whether it’s a lack of profile (also known as name recognition) or com-

pelling local issues prompting the electorate to vote in a new council, a significant turnover wasn’t in the cards this time. Being a member of Mayor Lois Jackson’s Delta Independent Voters’ Association (DIVA) ticket this election wasn’t enough to get Rod Binder onto council either as the seat vacated by Delta North MLA Scott Hamilton went to former councillor Heather King. Incumbents retained the other five seats. Saying the lack of name recognition undoubtedly hurt their chances, Wong, who finished eighth, just over 3,300 votes behind the sixth and final council spot, said he has no regrets and plans to run again. “The thing about timing is that you’ll never have it in your favour. We did the best that we could and were handed a certain deck of cards and played it to the best of our abilities,” he said. He said Deltans can expect to see a significant change in four years when Mayor Lois Jackson, and possibly others, don’t run

Delta Votes 2014 again, while some councillors might vacate their seats to chase the mayor’s chair. Now a second-term independent MLA, former Delta councillor Vicki Huntington was the first on council to name herself as an independent and run on her own in the early 2000s, but by then she’d been on for nearly a decade and had that allimportant name recognition. She said the lack of name recognition, as well as the fact nothing outstanding occurred that might have tainted an incumbent’s reputation, made things difficult for the newcomers this time. The difficulty for the voter is how to judge whether a new name is good and deserves their vote, Huntington said, adding there were several excellent candidates but they didn’t have enough profile.

The province is looking for input into its next 10year transportation plan and Delta was more than happy to oblige. “Certainly we wanted to make sure we got our feedback in as soon as possible,” engineering director Steven Lan told civic politicians recently. The last transportation plan, titled Opening Up B.C., was prepared in 2003 and included plans for the South Fraser Perimeter Road, Golden Ears Bridge and Sea-to-Sky Highway improvements. The new 10year plan is expected early next year. In a report to council, Lan said the new plan will set out a series of short, medium and long-term priorities. In its submission to the province, Delta has identified a number of priorities for local roadways, including a median barrier for Highway 10

Construction of a pair of mega malls at the Tsawwassen First Nation will increase traffic on Highway 17. between Highway 91 and Scott Road, upgrades to the Nordel Way access to the Alex Fraser Bridge, a pedestrian/cyclist overpass at Highway 17 and 52nd Street and an interchange at Highway 17 and 56th Street. “Highway 17 between 52nd Street and 56th Street is a busy corridor, with passenger vehicles and trucks accessing the Tsawwassen ferry terminal,” Lan stated in his report. “The addition of the Tsawwassen Mills mall, in Tsawwassen First

Nations, is anticipated to significantly increase traffic in this area.” Delta is also asking for interchanges at Highway 17 and the Highway 91 connector as well as bike connections and increased access to Ladner with the George Massey Tunnel replacement. The province is collecting input into the transportation plan until Dec. 12. The public can also provide feedback on the plan at engage.gov.bc.ca/transportationplan.

TED MURPHY

MURPHY’S LAW Lois Jackson is poised to begin her sixth, and what she says will be her final, term as Delta’s mayor when the council elected last Saturday is sworn into office on Dec. 1. The upcoming term will see Jackson operate without a majority, a fact she’s quick to downplay, saying council will continue to function as it has for the last 15 years under her leadership. It would be easy view such sentiment as a politician looking to put the most positive spin possible on an unenviable circumstance, but history would suggest the mayor’s not just blowing smoke. Jackson’s DIVA slate, as well as its TriDelta predecessor, has never occupied more than four seats at the council table, and even then it’s sometimes been a rather tenuous grip. Regardless, she’s found a way to govern and to move an agenda forward, a situation I don’t necessarily see changing a whole lot in the next four years. When Jackson was elected mayor for the first time in 1999, she enjoyed a slim majority, but it wasn’t long before Vicki Huntington effectively left the fold. The arrival of Scott Hamilton in 2002 solidified things for her second term, but the departure of Guy Gentner in 2005, who was replaced on the ticket by Krista Engelland, created a situation similar to the first term. DIVA decided to only run three candidates in 2008, but added Ian Paton part way through the term in a byelection. Hamilton vacated his seat earlier this year after being elected MLA for Delta North, once again leaving DIVA without a majority. History shows Jackson’s decade-anda-half at the helm has been far from topdown majority rule. She has found support for everything from staff overhaul to debt reduction from a variety of sources, including many who didn’t run on the same ticket. The likes of Ann Claggett, George Hawksworth, Anne Peterson and, more recently, Bruce McDonald and Jeannie Kanakos, have all supported Jackson and her slate mates at various times. When you look at some of the biggest issues of the soon-to-be-completed term, you don’t see an us-versus-them pattern of voting. If anything, there’s been a high degree of solidarity. Only Sylvia Bishop opposed the Century Group’s plan for the Southlands, while all council members were supportive of the 37-storey highrise in North Delta known as Delta Rise. With six of the seven members of the current council returning for another term, it’s hard to see that changing to any great extent. Even if the mayor doesn’t have a majority.

Rookie candidates reminded name recognition takes time DOUG HUSBAND

COMMUNITY COMMENT On Remembrance Day there was a massive turnout at the cenotaph in Ladner’s Memorial Park on the 100th anniversary of the start of the First World War. The service took on added significance with the recent fatal shooting of Cpl. Cirillo standing guard at the National War Memorial in Ottawa and the deliberate fatal hit and run incident seriously injuring a second member of Canada’s armed forces. These tragic and senseless acts have forever altered security levels at our federal and provincial institutions. The local scene was a mixture of families, friends and local citizens. Front and centre was our high profile police pipe band supported by Delta’s finest and the RCMP in dress uniform. The parade was replete with marching cadets and various youth organizations, highlighted by our local legionnaires and veterans.

No matter the number of memorial services we attend in respectful silence, the Second World War planes flying overhead raise the emotion level in the crowd for those who sacrificed life and limb so long ago. None of us will ever fully understand their living hell while under siege in the air, on the beaches of Europe or the horror of trench warfare. The formal service ends with the optimistic bugler’s reveille, the soldiers signal to rise to a new day and carry on with renewed vigour and energy. On a lighter note, on Nov. 10, Delta celebrated its 135th birthday, albeit with little fanfare. Happy Birthday, Delta! November has been a busy and eventful month. Thirty-two per cent of eligible voters turned out on a pleasant Nov. 15 day for our civic election. Few expected the percentage to be as high without the attraction of a competitive mayoral contest. The unbeatable veteran Lois Jackson was returned by acclamation as mayor for her sixth and (some say) last term in office. Her worship will have a well-seasoned council to work with as all incumbents were returned, along with Heather King, a former councillor. Congratulations to all those returning to the council chambers

for a four-year term. To those unsuccessful on their first foray into the world of public service, remember it takes time, and hard work and an organized team, to garner name recognition and public support. Several long-serving councillors have met with success after numerous attempts to public office. Prime examples are poll-topping Sylvia Bishop and Jeannie Kanakos a close second. While on the topic of poll toppers, kudos to Laura Dixon, the able chair of Delta’s school board, as top vote getter. In many ways the election of school trustees was more fractious with the efforts by the Delta Teachers’ Association and CUPE to influence the election outcome by endorsing only one incumbent. This tactic seems to be carry over from the best-forgotten strike/lockout of months past. It’s unfortunate that Donna Burke, a highly regarded trustee, was the only incumbent to lose her seat. Newcomers Rhiannon Bennett and Bruce Reid were elected, filling the vacancy left by retiring three-term Simon Truelove, who served with distinction. Thanks to all those well-meaning citizens taking their first nervous steps into public service. And a good night to you, Dale.

Role of school board trustee isn’t to be more vocal in provincial politics

Editor: Re: Outspoken newcomers added to school board, Nov. 19 When I signed up to campaign for trustee earlier this fall, I read the job description very carefully. Nowhere does it state the role of a trustee is to submit a needs budgets, get fired, shut down schools, host sitins or march on the legislature wearing “Christy Clark is evil!” placards. While I do think that both Bruce Reid and Rhiannon Bennett have

much to offer the board, I do not believe that it’s the job of trustees to be “more vocal” in provincial politics. Wouldn’t the time for making the funding of public education in B.C. “a big issue” (as Reid states) be during the run up to the next provincial election? Laura Dixon is either delusional or just being nice when she states at the end of the article that she sees everyone working together “respectfully and collaboratively.” With two trustees operating on a fundamental-

ly divergent agenda, playing nice is not likely to happen. I encourage parents who have children in our public schools for the next four years to come out to school board meetings. We need to keep an eye on this board or we’ll find ourselves singing protest songs in empty classrooms long before school lets out for summer. To view the school board meeting schedule for 201415, go to http://web.deltasd. bc.ca/content/about/boardofeducation/boardmeetings. Laura Michelle Thomas

Colder nights and wet days mean tough times for small birds, and many come to gardens and yards in search of food. Some are migrants spending the winter at the coast, having nested at higher altitudes or in more northern areas of the province. Providing bird feeders gives us an opportunity to enjoy their presence. Seed feeders attract many species, including flocks of dark-eyed juncos. This very common winter visitor can be well-camouflaged on the ground, but seldom stays still. The flock’s erratic movements help them avoid predators such as the Cooper’s hawk and merlin. White-crowned sparrows, house finches and bushtits also travel in flocks, for safety and company. Bushtits are tiny grey birds with long tails that nest locally, building pendulous nests in gardens and parks. In fall, they gather into larger and larger flocks, sometimes as many as 70 together, and roam around feeding on aphids and other small insects. They will readily come to a suet feeder and are a comical sight

Snuggles is a less-is-more kind of dog that needs an experienced owner without young children. Delta has placed a stop work order on construction and fill activities at a Ladner farm that has been the source of much angst among neighbouring residents. resolved. Throughout this year, residents have complained about the steady stream of dump trucks making their way onto the property, accessing the site through an entrance on 44th Avenue next to Cedar Park Church. Those concerns included, by some accounts, more than six trucks an hour, up to 10 hours a day, arriving at the site, leaving a muddy trail. After years of mostly not being in production, the entire site is being prepared for farming, including the construction of four barns. The notice to cease work was issued due to non-compliance, but Delta bylaws manager Hugh Davies said it’s primarily due to the operator’s “paperwork not being in order” and not illegal fill being trucked to the site, nor the dirt on the road. Davies said the farm operator has been fined for the trucking of fill, but that was due to it being done on a Sunday when prohibited. He also said the operator has agreed to voluntarily move equipment and trailers stored near the entrance of the property to the back when the barns are finished. Described on its website as a “progressive grower and supplier of fresh produce,” Hothi Farms has been operating for years at other leased and owned Ladner properties, growing potatoes, beans, peas, cabbage and pumpkins.

The Delta Chamber of Commerce unveiled a geopictorial map of Delta this week that showcases the municipality’s growing economic regions and opportunities. Produced by Mountain Media, the new map features a unique, colourful illustration showing enhanced buildings, landmarks and landscapes of Annacis Island, Ladner, North Delta, Tilbury and Tsawwassen. Award-win-

ning Montreal artist JeanLouis Rheault created the artwork. “This new map will be a great asset for promoting Delta’s vibrant businesses and economic regions,” said Delta Chamber of Commerce chair Orv Nickel. “Companies will benefit from greater visibility as both posters and presentation folders of the map will be used throughout our community.”

Two large signs have been installed at the Delta Chamber of Commerce and Delta Visitor Centre, and at the visitor pullout near the Tsawwassen ferry terminal. The creation of the Delta Geo-pictorial map was made possible by a cooperative effort between the Delta Chamber of Commerce and Delta Visitor Centre, Mountain Media, Port Metro Vancouver and partners from the private sector.

Did You Know?

The Friends of Delta Hospital want to share some important information with you about our local hospital that was almost closed in 2001 and has yet to be restored to its operating level between 1980 and 2000. We believe Delta deserves a community hospital that serves the needs of our community residents and businesses – which is what we had for over 20 years!

Ten Facts About Delta Hospital 1. Opened in 1977 following extensive community advocacy and financial support which continues to today. 2. Almost closed in 2001 but saved due to extraordinary community effort including petitions, lawsuits, public meetings, and fundraising led by Delta residents and local organizations. 3. Delta Council took legal action against the Fraser Health Authority (FHA) for downgrading and removing hospital services and staff. 4. No operating deficit until the FHA assumed role of administration & operations. 5. Occupancy in Delta Hospital averaged 128% in 2012-13; this issue of overcrowding warrants urgent attention and improvement according to Fraser Health in its current strategic plan. 6. Today has 60 beds which is less than one third the regional average based on the population; if consistent with other communities in Fraser Health Delta Hospital would have 190 beds. 7. Delta receives 1% of the Fraser Health region’s annual budget of $3 billion despite having 6.25% of its resident population not including an additional transit population and non-resident population of 60,000 including potential disaster sites like the port, airport and ferry terminal. 8. Recent funding cutbacks by Fraser Health have jeopardized hospital operations to the point where 30 doctors and Delta Hospital Medical Staff consider the situation a health care crisis. 9. Fraser Health has advised Delta Hospital staff to be prepared for further funding cuts while they plan to increase their corporate budget. 10. Current plans of FHA are to defer the topic of a new hospital in Delta until after 2032.

If you share our concerns and want to add your voice to ours in order to restore these services send us an e-mail and visit our website at friendsofdeltahospital.weebly.com.

The Times takes a holiday This issue of The Delta Times will be the last for some time, until business conditions call for renewal of the publication. It has been a pleasure for the present publishers of the Times to serve the good citizens of the Delta. This service, however, has been performed at considerable cost, out of proportion to possible revenue. Lately, because of the precaution rendered necessary by the quiet conditions caused by the war, the businessmen of Ladner who have contributed cheerfully and according to their means to the sup-

port of the local newspaper, have felt this tax to be one which they would gladly have suspended; and the Times realizes that they will be glad to discontinue their advertising for a while. Subscribers will receive from this office cheques for the amounts they have paid in advance. These cheques will be payable at par either at Ladner or New Westminster. Subscribers who are in arrears may address the amounts owing to this office as usual, or pay them to Dr. A. deR. Taylor, who has represented our business interests at Ladner.

A Warm and Joyful welcome to...

Daniel Kirkegaard

Sacred Heart Catholic Church

Tsawwassen United Church

Oh, for a slow moment It seems to me that there are always plenty of the activities, events, to do lists, etc. to keep us more than busy, engaged and even overwhelmed. Our lives often absorb this constant involvement as normal, the expected demands of daily living. We even speak a kind of worldly wisdom that claims, “if you want something done, ask a busy person,” (Quote attributed to Benjamin Franklin) as a justification for our busyness. It is a good thing to be open and ready to be engaged, involved and active. In younger years it lends some motivation and direction to life that is still a mystery to be explored. In elder years it lends purpose and significance to rise each new day and

continue to contribute from years of lived experience and even wisdom. I would suggest that it is also a good thing to be open and ready to welcome times of solitude, a slower pace, even the idea of wasting time, by yourself or with another. Oddly enough this is often the greater challenge. We’ve been taught to get on to the next project, complete that job we have been putting off. I would encourage you to be intentional about welcoming a slower day, a few hours between busyness. We all know it won’t last long as the trappings of preparing for Christmas will be upon us before we know it. Even the ancient wisdom of the Psalmist (46:10) calls us to: “Be still and know that I am God.”

Tsawwassen’s Emily Klukas is one of three local residents receiving provincial scholarship funding from the B.C. Arts Council this year. The 17-year-old received a $5,950 award to study dance in Germany at the prestigious Mannheim University of Music and Performing Arts, where she has returned for her second year. Klukas describes an intensive and demanding itinerary of ballet and other dance lessons six days a week, interspersed with practical and theoretical classroom training ranging from music theory to dance history. “It’s really encouraging being surrounded by teachers and students who are all so passionate about what they’re doing, and although the program is intense and can be physically draining, I feel as though it’s pushing me in the right direction,” she says. “I am so grateful for this experience of studying what I love in a culture where

there is so much history behind what I’m doing.” Klukas’ formal dance training began at the Deas Island Dance studio in Delta, under the guidance of Janet Gittens, whom Klukas credits with inspiring her to pursue her dreams. Delta South MLA Vicki Huntington says the province has a major role to play in supporting and investing in the arts and culture sector. “The B.C. Arts Council scholarship will help Emily enter the dance world having honed her considerable talents at one of the best schools in the world. I wish her and all our local grant recipients all the very best.” As B.C.’s lead agency for arts funding and development, the B.C. Arts Council enlists the expertise of the province’s artistic community to evaluate grant applications independent of government. ooking to improve your public speaking or leadership skills? Checking out a Toastmasters meeting would be a good place to start. “It’s a lot of fun. You get to meet a lot of interesting people, different perspectives on life,” says Sean Bideshi, 20, a member of the Ambassadors Toastmasters. “It’s always a challenge because we’re always trying to get better in public speaking.” The Ambassadors meet twice a month at the Little House in Tsawwassen. Bideshi, who’s studying journalism at Kwantlen Polytechnic University, was one of the members present during a recent Introduction to Toastmasters Workshop the Optimist attended. The cordial meeting included explanations on various roles, a Table Topics exercise, a speech and evaluations with tips and advice. “I think it’s a great group,” says Bideshi, a Toastmaster since the age of nine, during a break in the

check out a meeting. Asked to explain what Toastmasters is in a nutshell, another Ambassadors member, Barb Westlake, says it’s a public speaking and leadership program. “It encompasses both,”

she says. Westlake has been involved with Toastmasters since 2006. “Toastmasters isn’t just about speaking in front of the club, it’s about taking the speaking and leader-

ship skills out of the club and into the world,” she says. “It’s thrilling to see our members develop skills and confidence, so they can achieve their dreams. Literally the transformation after just three speeches is unbelievable.” Westlake explains she’s still with the group because she enjoys helping and mentoring members and being a part of their success stories. “It’s not just about helping others; I also need the public speaking practice that the club provides, to keep my own skills current,” she says. The Ambassadors Toastmasters meet on the second and fourth Tuesday of the month. The group has another introduction to Toastmasters evening planned for Feb. 3. isembarking our cruise ship at Curacao feels a bit like stepping into fairyland. Impossibly turquoise waters sparkle. Dutchstyled buildings in paint box colours bedazzle. And locals warmly welcome us with, “Bon Bini.” Air-conditioned taxis whisk us across the elegantly arched Queen Juliana Bridge to Fort Amsterdam, right in the heart of old town Willemstad. Once guarding against enemy ships and pirates, this 1635 citadel still overlooks the harbour’s entrance. Front seats in the pink open-air Trolley Train seem perfect for our narrated city tour. Guide Rosa begins, “Though typical throughout Western Europe, here in the Caribbean Willemstad’s colonial buildings are unique.” Chugging on along Sha

Caprilleskade, she points out wooden boats from Venezuela, 19 kilometres away. Docking together, they form the renowned Floating Market. “Vendors have sold fresh fish, fruit, vegetables, honey and cigars from their boats for decades, a trade handed down for generations.” Across the Queen Wilhelmina drawbridge, we visit a street of picturesque mansions built in Scharloo neighbourhood during the 1880s. Rosa recounts, “Surprisingly, all buildings were once just whitewashed, until one governor complained about the blinding effects. As the story goes, he ordered multicolored exteriors... and so the paint company owner became rich!” A stop at the ornate green Wedding Cake House allows us a photo op at Willemstad’s most photographed building, now home to Central Historical Archives. One classy red manor house has become the Venezuelan

Embassy. And at the end of the street, a gold home with red-tiled roof is Curacao’s Radio Hoyer. In a traffic circle on our way to the island’s largest cathedral, we sight Simon Bolivar’s imposing statue, a courageous man who lived in Curacao while working to liberate the region’s Spanish colonies. A stop at Our Lady of the Holy Rosary reveals a surprisingly austere, goldochre exterior. Inside, we find the cathedral to be bright and airy. And in one alcove, an artist from Guadeloupe used broken glass and recycled plastics to create a magnificent mosaic of Mary. Passing by Mikve Israel Emanuel, we learn that it replaced an earlier synagogue in 1865 and was in continuous use until 1964. In colonial times, Sephardic Jews found religious freedom in Curacao, developing into a thriving community by the mid17th century. Sculptures, including charming statuary

of other early settlers, decorate sidewalks along Willemstad’s narrow, orderly shopping streets that face Santa Anna Bay. Ending back at Fort Amsterdam where we began, a stroll through the citadel’s shaded courtyard reveals a historic Protestant church, nowadays a museum. The current government offices are next door and the Governor’s Palace sports a black mark high on the front wall. “That hole recalls a British cannonball fired in 1804 during a month-long siege,” Rosa says, smiling. “It memorializes our victory.” With World Heritage status and Spanish, Dutch, British and Jewish heritage, Willemstad proves an extraordinary southern Caribbean port, making Curacao a delightful destination for visitors. Christmas gifts for gardeners anne marrison

Green Room When gardeners seek out gifts for other gardeners in-store or online, it’s not hard to discover things that would be so useful in your own garden — sometimes replacing sentimental handme-downs that never did

work well anyway. For instance, rural gardeners with trees shedding acorns or black walnuts usually get into a sequence of rake-bend-rake, which can last for hours each fall and is hard on backs. But it is possible to acquire fruit and nut gatherer. This is a hollow ball of flexible wires on a long stick that is said to pick up quantities fast. These and city lot gardeners find a wheelbarrow essential. But storing

people gardening in large containers, mini shovels are hugely valuable. For windowsill gardeners, there are mini spades just a few inches long. Both ends can be used. The spade end has a point while at the other end, the handle is fluted. More of these gardeners are now starting plants on windowsills. It’s still possible to find full-size flats with transparent tops. More useful are narrow flats topped with durable domes.

wheelbarrows takes space best used for other things. Landscapers’ canvas bags have very large, wideopen mouths and are easy to drag from one spot to another. Later, they can be scrunched up into next to no space. Spades and forks can start to feel heavy as one gets older. That’s where smallish floral shovels and forks start becoming useful for vegetable gardens as well as flower beds. For

Rotary club lighting up Diefenbaker Park Everyone in Tsawwassen is invited to a Festive Light Up of Diefenbaker Park next Saturday afternoon. Members of the Rotary Club of Tsawwassen have hung thousands of lights at the 1st Avenue park and will turn them on for the holiday season at an event set to run from 4 to 5 p.m. Free family fun, hot chocolate, carol singing and a big cheer to turn on the lights will highlight the event that helps mark the beginning of the Christmas season. Rotarians, assisted by Bartlett Tree Services, used the cheerful sunlight of last Saturday morning to prepare for the annual lighting of the park.

From pretender to podium finisher Sun Devils’ rapid progress leads to surprising bronze medal at field hockey provincial championships BY

Local Tides

MARK BOOTH

mbooth@delta-optimist.com

The bigger the game, the better the South Delta Sun Devils played resulting in an unexpected podium finish at last week’s B.C. “AAA” field hockey championships in West Vancouver. The Sun Devils reached the provincial podium for the fourth time in their history and for the second straight season with a 2-1 win over the Kelowna Owls in the bronze medal game. The outcome concluded a season that saw South Delta make remarkable progress over eight weeks after beginning the campaign minus eight starters from the 2013 squad. “We started the year off with a great deal to learn about each other as individuals and about how we could play together effectively,” said longtime time coach Neil McLennan. “It took a few weeks and some ups and downs, but by the end this group turned into an excellent team as well. “I was approached by a couple of coaches who had watched us earlier in the season they were astonished at how far the girls had advanced. This was a true testament to strong leadership from the Grade 12s, excellent team work, determination and a desire to excel. They truly over-achieved at every level and as a result this was one of most rewarding years at the school. The unexpected bronze medal was truly deserved.” When the 16-team provincials got underway, McLennan would have been delighted with even a top eight finish. His squad dropped a 3-0 decision to Heritage Woods in the Valley final two weeks earlier and lost by the same score to

Still, he was encouraged at how well his team competed in both those games and wins over McMath (3-2) and Riverside (50) were enough to put the Devils into the quarter-finals. That’s when things got very interesting and exciting for the upstart team. South Delta met perennial North Shore power Argyle and dominated play. They took a 1-0 lead into the second half when the Pipers pulled even. However, the Devils produced out a huge win when Lauren Joyce finished off an excellent passing sequence. With at least a top four finish secured, the Sun Devils moved onto their next task at hand — defend-

ing ‘AA’ B.C. champion Shawnigan Lake. The Island private school had moved up to the higher tier this season and featured a roster loaded with international students, including eight starters. It took a tremendous defensive effort, led by senior Jill Cavert, and some key saves from goalkeeper Hana Lamb to keep the game scoreless until the late stages of the second half. The eventual champions converted goal mouth scramble from a penalty corner for what proved to be the game winner. Sparked by Grade 12 Vanessa Pearson, the Devils pressed for the equalizer but came up short despite a splendid effort. Battle tested after three straight games against the top tournament

seeds, the girls entered the bronze medal match with confidence. Pearson gave her team a 1-0 lead on a terrific run down the left side. South Delta played more stellar defence with the focus on the Owls’ dangerous centre forward. Kelowna finally broke through in the second half on a rocket shot to the top corner that Grade 9 keeper Abi Smart nearly stopped. The resilience of this team was such though, tha the response was just to play harder. A few minutes later, the Devils got the winner as senior Maddie Veeneman was on the spot to sweep in a hard cross from the right wing. Other graduating players include: Jillian Poohachoff, Morgan Scoville and Arianna Meeres.

Renekema helps SFU volleyball to first winning season in NCAA

Ladner’s Amanda Renkema capped her collegiate volleyball career in style by helping Simon Fraser University record its first-ever winning season at the NCAA Division II level. SFU closed out its schedule with a 3-0 sweep of Alaska Fairbanks on Saturday night. The result gave the Clan a 17-0 overall record and

11-7 in Great Northwest Athletic Conference play. Renkema was the final member of the inaugural NCAA recruiting class of 2010 and has served as team co-captain for the past three seasons. The middle blocker recorded 70 blocks and 205 kills, ranking her 18th and 16th respectively

in the conference. The Richmond Christian graduate appeared in 110 matches and 312 sets in her career, making 108 starts. SFU’s roster also includes former South Delta Sun Devils standout Christine Howlett who was in her freshman season.

South Delta Atom A2 Storm take momentum into league play after a solid showing at the recent Remembrance Day Tournament in Saanich.

Atom A2 Storm come close to reaching final in Saanich Rep hockey team loses in semi-final shootout to Alberni After recently completing its tiering schedule to start the season, the South Delta Atom A2 Storm hockey team headed to Vancouver Island for a weekend to remember at the Remembrance Day tournament in Saanich. South Delta got off to a slow start with a loss to the Campbell River “A” team, but then bounced back with a 4-3 win against the hosts. The Storm finished round robin with a 2-1 victory over Peninsula, securing a spot in the semi-finals against Alberni Valley on Remembrance Day. The hard-fought game was tied at 1-1 at the end of regulation time. To move on to the finals, the teams were faced with a

shootout, which took 10 players from each side to break the deadlock against two red hot goalies. It was a heartbreaker as Alberni Valley secured a spot in the final. The Atom A2 Storm consists of Charlie Bagnall-Dubras, Jack Callow, Charlie Derrheim, Jackson Fowler, Jake Jones, Jackson MacCubbin, Brady MacDonald, William McColman, Mathias McDonnell, Tristan Scoras, Declan Speiran, Kalan Tasse, Brooke Tuba, Owen Turpie, Owen Venier and Ben Wichers. Team is coached by Jim Scouras, with assistants Brent Derrheim, Rick Dubras, Mark McColman and Blair Tuba.

November 21, 2014 The Delta Optimist A41

Here are just some of our many testimonials we've received from our recent clients. Over the past few months I have had the pleasure of dealing with the Fraser Elliott Group. My mother's condo had been on the market for 18 months with two separate realtors. We had taken the suggestions of the last realtor and had the place completely painted with a neutral pallet but alas, it sat empty for the next few months with only a couple of showings. I had hesitated in calling Fraser Elliott Group because in all honesty, they had so many listings and I didn't think they would pay much attention to mom's condo. I finally made the decision to call them and was pleasantly surprised. Their professionalism, track record and assurance that mom's condo was just as important as any listing they had as well as their explanation of their unique marketing strategies made me choose them with confidence. Inside of a week we accepted an offer on the condo, fairly close to list price (which was the same price as the previous realtor had listed it). Unfortunately before subjects were removed, the deal fell through however, Fraser Elliott Group had another offer quickly and the condo sold close to list price. The condo was basically sold in just over a month with this group in a market where condo sales were fairly flat. Shortly after that, we decided to sell our family home. There was a lot of sentiment involved in the decision as it is the home my father built. in 1968 with pride and love. We bought the home from my mom 15 years ago after my dad passed away and happily raised our children there. When Fraser and Garrett came to see us I expressed that I did not want to sell to someone who was going to tear it down and it was important that the people who buy the house loves it as much as we have. They didn't make me feel silly, in fact I believe they empathized with how I must be feeling. The interest was overwhelming once listed. The drive by's and showings were numerous and the house sold within 6 days to the perfect young couple who look at the home as theirs for the next 40 years. Presently my daughter is using Fraser Elliott Groups buyers agent Jennifer to help her find an apartment. She has been wonderful and patient with our daughter who is a first time buyer. I've been involved all the way on the side lines and Jennifer could have easily deferred to me a number of times, but is dealing directly with our daughter teaching and walking her through this monumental step in her life. Fraser Elliott's team has been so professional, patient and understanding. They've explained who they are, how they market and walked us through every stage giving us sound advice every step of the way. They provided a consult with a stager for hints to make the house look better for pictures and showings; there was plenty of notice given for showings; the photographer was professional and quick with an awesome results; the person that came in to take accurate measurements of house and property was efficient and fast. Its no wonder the Fraser Elliott Group is #3 in the world. The team is so professional and so on the ball. They take all of your comments and concerns to heart , offer sound, fair advice and definitely do the best for their client. I highly recommend their services. In my opinion and having dealt with a number of realtors recently, they are the best out there. - Janelle Clegg

Our home had been on the market for two years with little success when we resolved to contact Fraser Elliot and his group in order to market the property. What attracted us initially and what we wanted to take advantage of, was Fraser's high profile and his extensive and comprehensive marketing plan. What we didn’t expect was was the quality of the professionals in his group that handled all aspects of marketing and sale. The service they delivered was thorough, timely and effective. Above all, the service felt personal. Our home was SOLD within two months of listing at a price point we were very comfortable with. Perfect! - Peter Woeste Thank you for your excellent service. We really appreciate all your team’s efforts on the house photos and staging. We felt your team was so professional throughout the showing. We will highly recommend Fraser to everybody we know. Thank you again. -T&M Our experience working with the Fraser Elliott group on the sale of our home, was great. We really liked the team approach that they provided. Always someone at the office to answer your email or show your house. The showings were by appointment rather than open house which we really liked. We also really appreciated Kash (a stager) that they provided free of charge, to help us get the home ready for photos and staging. I’m not sure we would have thought of that ourselves and it really helped. We had extra furniture to move and the free loaner moving truck provided came in handy when moving it to a storage unit. The team of Garrett, Amber and Rachel who primarily showed our home were all great to deal with, friendly and personable, and the feedback they gave us after viewings, kept us positive. There were weekly updates and it really felt that the team was doing everything they could, to ensure our house got the exposure needed and the right buyer was found. Thank you to every member of the Fraser Elliott Group!! - Rosalind Cleroux This is how efficient the Fraser Elliott team is… some kids took our for sale sign as a prank and put down the street. Fraser’s team had it back in its spot before we even knew it was gone! This is the second time we have used Fraser Elliott to sell our home and we cannot say enough about how professional and efficient he and his team are!! From our first meeting where Fraser and Garrett spent three hours discussing the upcoming sale to having the sold sign on two weeks later… they are awesome!! The first time we used Fraser to sell our home it was done in a day!!! Now as we look to buy another home we are working with one of his team again!! We would recommend him to our friends and family in a minute!! Thanks so much to all of you for your hard working in getting the job done!!

The Fraser Elliott Team, l'd like to take this opportunity to extend my gratitude to you and your entire staff on what l consider to be an outstanding job on the sale of my condo. From our first meeting you told me that you would treat the sale of my condo the same way you would handle selling a $3 million home. You and your team stood by your word and did exactly that. I couldn't be happier! With the extremely tight window time you and your team was working with you made it all fit together. An outstanding performance by you all and my thanks and gratitude for all your hard work. I feel privileged to have met and worked together with such a congenial group as yourselves and will pass my positive recommendations on the appropriate people. Thanks again for the outstanding effort you all put in for me. Sincerely, - Dave Ennis It used to be that to sell a house you engaged a Realtor to provide an MLS listing and hope for a sale. Fraser Elliott with his team at the Fraser Elliott Group have completely changed the role of the Realtor in South Delta. From the first meeting to discuss a potential listing through to the removal of subjects you knew someone was in control and driving the sale, at no time did we feel we were in a wait and see what happens relationship. Whether you are looking to sell your home or buy a new home, we would strongly recommend the Fraser Elliott Group. - Steve and Julie Knight From past real estate experience we firmly believe that dealing with a high profile realtor who is supported by a team of experts is the way to sell a home. Hence, when we decided to sell our Ladner home a call to Fraser Elliott was the logical first move. Our experience with Fraser and his group exceeded all our expectations. Firstly, the marketing done by Fraser Elliott is targeted to a larger and better defined audience than that of other local realtors .The professionalism and communication skill of the entire group is exceptional Our main contact was Garrett Chu who kept us constantly informed of any new developments. The team approach, with backup in the office made all aspects of the sale seamless. We would not hesitate to recommend Fraser Elliott to our friends and acquaintances. - John and Shirley Jaye We are so happy with the job that the Fraser Elliot team did for us. They helped us with selling our current home and finding our new home. Jennifer and Garrett have tons of experience and are extremely professional agents. We liked the extras that came with Fraser Elliot. The team approach meant we never needed to wait to talk to someone if we had a question. The free consultation with an interior designer/stager was a nice touch. Our house sold in no time and we found our dream home! - Leeann K. and Brian T.

I couldn't be happier with the Fraser Elliot Team!!! They really give you and experience when selling your home. From the photography, the stager, the realtors who all work together. They honestly give you the best of the best. The Fraser Elliot team work hard for you and are so professional and just as important ... personable. They came recommended to me,and I would only recommended them to anyone looking to sell or buy! I honestly don't think the outcome for my sell would have been the same with anyone else! Thank you Garrett, Amber, Fraser, Julie and everyone else on the team! - Adrienne Fahr

Fraser’s team are experts in their field. I was blown away by their level of communication with me, I couldn’t believe they were at every showing and giving me feedback on how it went. I could tell right away that Fraser heavily invests in selling your product, from advertising material, videos, photography, facebook, newspapers, web presence and he even sent a complimentary stager to re-arrange my home to maximise our selling potential. I don’t know why you wouldn’t use Fraser Elliott to sell your home. - Ian Working with Fraser, and his amazing team, has been an all around great experience from day one. We had listed our house previously with a different agent and were not excited about the process of trying to sell our home again. We took their advice on pricing and any little changes we could do to make our home look its very best, and we were thrilled to accept a great offer within a few days, before it even hit MLS! We could not be happier with our decision to go with Fraser and his team and would highly recommend them to anyone buying or selling in the South Delta area. Thanks! - Ash and Laura Thomas To all the staff at Fraser Elliott Group, The one word that seems to exemplify your company is enthusiasm, from Fraser’s first look at our property to each of the staff that had anything to do with the sale, each of you showed such enthusiasm and gave us such support, you have no idea who much that had been lacking from previous efforts.Another word is professionalism, every detail was handled with such a competence and professionalism, the staging advice, the incredible photography even the impressive wording on the listing all first class and obviously very effective. But the final proof of Fraser Elliott’s excellent service came with the sale of our property in under 30 days from our first meeting. That in itself, speaks more eloquently than any other praise we might offer. And we do offer that praise, and, recommendation to anyone who is looking for enthusiastic, professional and excellent service in their real estate company. Look no farther than Fraser Elliott! With our thanks, - Alex and Cindy Adamson

HOW-TO SHOP IN TURKEY

This Christmas, consider raising money for your favourite charity or cause in lieu of Christmas gifts. You can do it as an individual, a family or as a party host or hostess. Crowdfunding makes it easy.

Rugs, jewelry, antique silverware, leather, textiles, food and spices! We’re gonna need a bigger bag.

• Choose a charity that means a lot to you. • Go to FundAid.ca and start a personal crowdfunding campaign. Tell a compelling story about why you care. • Send a link to your family and friends to let them know that instead of buying you a gift, they can make a donation to your campaign. • Donate the proceeds to your charity, thanking your donors for helping you make a difference in the lives of others.
