Outpouring thrills, humbles family
More than $250,000 raised online in just days to fund experimental cancer treatment for Tsawwassen teen BY
JESSICA KERR
jkerr@delta-optimist.com
It took just a matter of days for an online fundraiser to cover a Tsawwassen teen’s experimental cancer treatment to surpass its goal. Over the weekend, the McConkey family started a crowdfunding page in an effort to raise the $250,000 needed for 18-year-old Kyle McConkey to undergo an experimental treatment, which is only available at Seattle Children’s Hospital, in his battle with leukemia. That goal was reached by Wednesday and the donations continue to roll in. As of yesterday morning, the fund was up to more than $254,000. “We are so humbled and thrilled,” the teen’s parents, Ross and Joanne McConkey, posted on the fundraiser’s page. “Words can’t describe how appreciative we are ... we would like to thank you all from the bottom of our hearts for helping our son beat this terrible disease.” Ross McConkey told the Optimist the response has been overwhelming, adding donations have come in from across the province, throughout Canada and the U.S., and from as far away as

Kyle fell ill during a family camping trip in July of 2012 and was taken to a nearby hospital. He was soon diagnosed with hypodiploid acute lymphoblastic leukemia. It was the day before his 16th birthday.
After chemotherapy, radiation and a bone marrow transplant from younger brother Keegan, followed by several months in hospital, the cancer was in remission and life began to return to normal for the family. The cancer returned earlier this
year and was not responding to treatment. After a second transplant involving stem cells failed last month, the family was told Kyle has just weeks left. Seemingly out of options, Ross McConkey was contacted by the mother of a young leukemia
patient who has been cancerfree for 18 months following the experimental therapy. The treatment would see doctors harvest Kyle’s own T cells, a white blood cell that makes up part of the immune system. The cells are then re-engineered to fight the cancer before being transplanted back into the patient. Kyle is undergoing treatment for an infection as well as chemotherapy to kill enough of the cancer cells to give the treatment a chance. Ross McConkey said things appear to be going well. “We’re heading in the right direction,” he said. He added his son is tired after battling the disease for so long, but remains focused on the fight. The family is planning to travel to Seattle on Dec. 10 where Kyle will be assessed by doctors and, if all goes according to plan, treatment will start around Dec. 17. A fundraiser is set for next Wednesday at South Delta Secondary. The Family Fundraiser for Kyle McConkey will feature a by-donation Bollywood/Bhangra dance class, a live Elvis impersonator and silent auction. The event runs from 6:30 to 9 p.m. To make an online donation, go to www.youcaring.com and search for Kyle McConkey.
Barn full of potatoes engulfed in flames An investigation is ongoing after a large barn fire in East Delta Wednesday night. Delta Fire Department deputy Chief Ken Sim said the structure, which was full of recently harvested potatoes, was engulfed in flames when crews arrived at the 10700-block of Ladner Trunk
Road just after 5 p.m. More than 20 firefighters and several trucks were on hand battling the blaze for more than three hours. No injuries were reported. Sim said crews remained on scene overnight and into Thursday morning to ensure there weren’t
any flare-ups. Fire investigators were also on scene looking into what caused the blaze. PHOTO BY

It took many years but they finally found a suitable and ideally located property for a major shopping centre to serve the Lower Mainland. At a Vancouver Board of Trade luncheon Wednesday, guest speaker Daniel Fournier, chairman and CEO of Ivanhoe Cambridge, gave an enthusiastic presentation on his company’s global investment plans, including the Tsawwassen Mills shopping centre under construction at the Tsawwassen First Nation. Describing their longterm lease deal with the TFN as historic for his company, which has over $40 billion in assets and is aiming for $60 billion in the next four years, Fournier also spoke highly of their relationship with the TFN. Following his presentation, he told the Optimist they had their sights set on the Vancouver area for long time, but the land was simply not available, either close to Vancouver or in the suburbs.

Ivanhoe Cambridge chairman and CEO Daniel Fournier told the Vancouver Board of Trade his company is aiming high with projects such as Tsawwassen Mills and Oakridge Centre redevelopment. “I think we looked at just about everywhere. It was very difficult,” said Fournier, noting the company is running across the same problem in Quebec. Ivanhoe Cambridge is behind the huge CrossIron Mills shopping mall north of Calgary and Vaughan Mills outside of Toronto, both of which will act as a model for Tsawwassen Mills, which is set to open in 2016. Fournier explained Tsawwassen Mills will be
a “hybrid” shopping centre, offering something not typically found in other malls in the region. It will have a mix of fashion brands and factory outlets as well as restaurants and a 1,100-seat food court. With 20 per cent of its customer base expected to be tourists, the mall will feature approximately 1.2 million square feet of retail space and 16 anchor tenants. So far, Bass Pro Shops is the only major retailer confirmed as a tenant,
but other “major marquee retailers” are said to be coming. As far as following the same model of CrossIron Mills and Vaughan Mills, Fournier said each case has to be looked at independently, so going into Tsawwassen the company didn’t want to automatically assume the exact same formula would work here. “It’s a huge investment but a very exciting investment when you talk about the number of jobs — 4,500
jobs during construction and 3,000 when it finishes. That doesn’t happen that often,” he said. “We just opened our outlet collection in Niagara, a little similar to Tsawwassen in the sense that the architecture of the outlet centre is built really to conform to the culture and the environment of Niagara. It’s a huge hit. People like it, local people like it and people are jumping across the border. Canadians who were going to shop across the other side are staying home, so we’d like to do the same thing in Tsawwassen.” Also in attendance at the luncheon were TFN Chief Bryce Williams and Chris Hartman, head of the First Nation’s economic development corporation. Hartman said market analysis has showed most of the customer base appears to be south of the Fraser River. The Property Development Group is building Tsawwassen Commons, an outdoor mall comprising 550,000 square feet, adjacent to Tsawwassen Mills. With Wal-Mart as an anchor tenant, it’s also set to open in 2016.
Businesses to strategize as mall competition looms BY
SANDOR GYARMATI
sgyarmati@delta-optimist.com
Delta council approved a $36,500 contract this week for a consultant to help come up with ways to ensure South Delta businesses can survive the Tsawwassen First Nation’s mega malls. The contract was awarded to G.P Rollo and Associates Ltd. to formulate the South Delta Business
Sustainability Strategy. The consultant is to work with Delta and representatives of the local businesses communities — including the Delta Chamber of Commerce, the Ladner Business Association, the Tsawwassen Business Improvement Association and Tourism Delta — to ensure long-term business sustainability when Tsawwassen Mills and Tsawwassen Commons
open in the spring of 2016. The strategy will not only look at the risks existing businesses face but also what actions can be undertaken so they remain competitive and insulate themselves to the best extent possible. The strategy will also explore “opportunities to strengthen the village flavour of Ladner and Tsawwassen” as well as “best practices from other

small communities.” CAO George Harvie told council a report with recommendations would be ready in three months. Funding for the consultant will come from council’s contingency budget. At an LBA meeting earlier this year, John Scott of Ivanhoe Cambridge said the company believes the malls will be complementary to existing businesses. “We do a lot of market
research before we come into a market,” he said, adding the company found that vacancy rates were reasonably low, which suggests a vibrant community. In terms of competing with established businesses in Ladner and Tsawwassen, Scott said the style of shopping centre planned for the area usually attracts a much higher number of shoppers from outside the community.

Four Delta police officers were among many from around the province who were awarded for their actions at the 33rd annual Police Honours Night in Victoria last Thursday night. The Delta officers — sergeants Brian Hill and Brad Moller and constables Rob Kennett and Joe Da Silva — received Meritorious Service Awards for their involvement in potentially life-threatening incidents and for their work to make the community better and safer. Hill, Kennett and Da Silva received medals for their teamwork last fall in arresting a high-risk, emotionally disturbed man. On Oct. 21, 2013, officers responded to a break and enter in progress. Once on the scene, officers found
the suspect, an emotionally disturbed man with a history of drug abuse, on the roof of the house. The man claimed he had a gun. He was refusing to comply with police direction and was threatening to shoot someone. Officers surrounded the home and were waiting for the emergency response team when the man began stabbing himself in the neck. To prevent the man from harming himself, officers immediately forced their way into the home where they were able to arrest the man and render first aid. “This was a successful outcome to an incident which had the potential to escalate significantly given the apparent mental state of the man at the time,” said department spokesperson Sgt. Sarah Swallow. Moller received his medal for his role in the

Send my parcel to the Point! Canadian online shoppers fuel booming mailbox business in American peninsula BY
SANDOR GYARMATI
sgyarmati@delta-optimist.com
The Canadian dollar may have slipped lately but companies offering post-box services in Point Roberts continue to enjoy a booming business. TSB Shipping Plus is one of the several busy parcel outlets in the tiny American peninsula where Canadians can have their own U.S. mailbox for a small fee, prices varying by package weight and size. Manager Teresa Pope says the lower Canadian loonie has only resulted in a slight decrease in business, but things will certainly pick up with the holiday season now underway. “When it’s the busy time, our service is on pace for a customer a minute,” Pope says. Today is known as Black Friday, traditionally the busiest shopping day of the year in the United States, and is followed by Cyber Monday, where retailers offer significant deals online. Those two big shopping days kick off a Christmas rush that keep parcel outlets in the Point hopping throughout December. TSB, which started with five employees in 1997, now has over 20 and is looking at expanding. It’s seen business grow to the point where it deals with anywhere from 1,000 to 1,300 packages per day, topping out at around 2,500 a day during peak season. Pope notes the growing popularity of online shopping combined with high Canadian prices ensures the business will continue to

Christy Petersen, owner of McFrugals Parcel Service in Point Roberts, says expensive Canadian goods has meant more shoppers are buying online from U.S. retailers, which has been great for her business. grow. “Even with the dollar, I hear it every day, how everything is overly priced in Canada. It must be worth it for them to come down.” In just a few short years, the majority of the online shopping has shifted from eBay to Amazon, she says, adding Amazon Prime’s offer of two-day free shipping is especially attractive for Canadians. Beth Calder, manager of nearby Point-to-Point Parcel, has also seen a huge increase in online shopping
by Canadians, meaning a boon for her Gulf Road outlet as well as other newer operations that have jumped on the bandwagon. “It’s the price of products, definitely. I would say some of the other biggest factors are time — it’s faster to get a shipment in the U.S. to Point Roberts than Canada. Then there’s also so much more of an option out there in mail order than in the Canadian retail,” says Calder. “Point Roberts also happens to be such a unique
area that it’s perfect to have a business like this because it’s so convenient for people. It’s easier to go through this border than to go all the way down to the Blaine border,” she says. Point-to-Point’s business has been doubling in each of the last few years, she says. “We’re the third largest depot here in Point Roberts, but the way we’re growing, it’ll be interesting to see where things go. It’s nice here we have the space to expand. It’s a neat little

business because you don’t necessarily have the inventory or overhead. Your product is your address.” Calder says they processed 14,000 packages last December. “There’s a lot of customers we have who don’t even live in our geographic area. They live in other parts of B.C. or Alberta, so they help keep our volumes up,” she says. Christy Petersen, owner of McFrugals Parcel Service, says her business has also grown thanks to
the price gap as well as more and more Canadians becoming computer literate shoppers. “The difference between Amazon.com and Amazon. ca — you can go on both those sites and see the exact same products, but Amazon.ca can be three times more for the product itself, and then they charge you for shipping. It’s crazy.” A nurse by trade who purchased the business over a year ago, Petersen says her outlet has been profitable due in part to its low overhead, having space for storage in her main building and a few containers in the parking lot. She says business has tripled in the year she’s owned it due to Canadians being turned off by having to pay higher prices for everything from shoes to snow tires. It’s also meant a boost to the Point’s economy. “I think most people who live here are pretty happy because our economy is based on Canadians. Now parcels are bringing more of them down here.” The Canadian government has reportedly been poised to introduce legislation to try to narrow the consumer price gap between Canada and the U.S. for identical goods. The proposal was a key part of the consumer-first agenda set out in the last federal budget. The Retail Council of Canada was quick to applaud the government’s intention to address the practice of certain manufacturers whose Canadian distributors and wholesalers charge more than their U.S. counterparts.

Memorial boards allow public to pay tribute to Quinn BY

Delta residents will have a chance to sign condolences and honour legendary hockey player, coach and GM Pat Quinn. Starting today, a community tribute set up by the Corporation of Delta will be available in the form of memorial boards at recreation facilities. Mayor Lois Jackson took a moment at Delta council’s weekly meeting Monday to recognize Quinn, the former Vancouver Canucks bench
boss who passed away Sunday at 71 after a lengthy illness. “Hockey has lost a great man. Known as ‘The Big Irishman,’ Pat was one of hockey’s most respected players and coaches. As a part-owner of the Vancouver Giants, Pat was very involved in the development of hockey in our community and beyond,” said Jackson. “Pat’s support towards our local fundraisers and initiatives, including Delta’s anti-bullying campaign, was steadfast. Quinn’s connections to South Delta also included another partnership with Giants’ owner Ron Toigo in the Tsawwassen Springs housing development. Quinn was in the audience at several council meetings and public hearings as the proposal made its way through the approval process. His many hockey accomplishments included guiding the Vancouver Canucks to the 1994 Stanley Cup finals and coaching Canada to a gold medal at the 2002 Winter Olympics.

TED MURPHY
MURPHY’S LAW When a project is in the works for such a long time, its existence limited to the paper the plans are drawn on, it begins to take on a surreal quality. Sure, things might be moving forward, but until it actually comes to fruition, the project still has that I’ll-believe-it-whenI-see-it feel to it. I still view Southlands development that way even though almost all the approvals are in place and I’ve also held the mega malls planned for the Tsawwassen First Nation in similar regard. They are so large, and so out of proportion with anything of a commercial nature in these parts, it was hard not to look at the malls as much more than someone’s pipe dream. But as construction continues on both Tsawwassen Mills and Tsawwassen Commons, it’s readily apparent these huge shopping complexes will soon open their doors, forever altering the area’s retail landscape. With a scheduled opening a yearand-a-half away, these mega malls are, understandably, creating trepidation in local business circles. The municipality is spending upwards of $30,000 on a consultant to create the South Delta Business Sustainability Strategy in an effort to help the commercial sector try to withstand the pressures that are on the way. It’s an unfortunate reality but there will undoubtedly be casualties when that type of competition sets up shop in such proximity. The malls will siphon shoppers, and their dollars, at the expense of existing businesses. It won’t be pretty in some cases, but if there’s a silver lining in all of this, it’s the fact the South Delta marketplace has evolved over time in the face of similar competition. Up to this point those competitors have been located beyond our borders, so dropping a behemoth on the doorstep is a whole different animal, but the principle remains the same. Look around our commercial cores and you’ll see dry cleaners and dental offices alongside pizza places and sushi shops. Given we routinely leave town to buy certain items, but are far less apt to travel to renew insurance or get a haircut, our business districts have, over time, morphed into primarily service centres. Yes, we also have our share of retail shops, and these will face pressures from the TFN malls, but it’s heartening to note they have managed to carve out a niche in an already competitive environment. It won’t be long before the mega malls become a reality, but that doesn’t mean it’s all doom and gloom for our business communities.
Familiar challenges are facing Delta’s new, but old, council IAN ROBERTSON
COMMUNITY COMMENT We are about to embark on a four-year journey with our Delta council. No one is new; all are experienced with Delta’s ways, challenges and shortcomings. All were the popular choice in each of our three communities. As we look ahead, will the council continue to abandon community and area planning? Will it continue the practice of spot rezoning — where a building can pop up down your street despite what the plan calls for? Or will council attempt to restore some sense of predictability in what might happen to the property down your street? Just out of sight for most is the sand pile being transformed into a pair of huge shopping malls. These malls will have a real impact on
our shopping. Some look forward to improved choice and fantastic bargains. For that to happen, customers will be needed in large numbers. That, in turn, will mean local shops will lose business and customers, and many will close. These malls are beyond Delta’s control. Being on Tsawwassen First Nation land, they are like a separate municipality. So what can council do to try to limit the “damage” to our town centres? Will council take ownership of the problem? Will it be effective in taking actions? Several incumbents have claimed credit that the municipal debt is decreasing fast and will be gone about the time this council’s mandate is exhausted. The pay-as-yougo policy has our mayor promising that all new expenditures will be covered without going into debt. Comparing this to a homeowner with a maturing mortgage, once it’s paid off the cash flow should improve with money now available to spend. For us, the question is: Why haven’t taxes gone down since we don’t have to pay as much to ser-

vice the debt? Some would argue we should reschedule the remaining debt so as to be able to really reduce taxes. Other voices can be heard asking why all capital projects have to be paid off in full? They go on to say: “It’s just overtaxing us! We should pay for capital works (roads, sewers, parks, swimming pools, etc.) over their useful life — as we use them.” Some folks, looking around Delta at the many cars in full parking lots, ask about climate change and about how much Delta is really doing to reduce the number of employee cars being driven to work. Where is car-pooling? Why isn’t it used more? What might happen if parking fees were assessed to employees? Finally, council needs to take a good look at property tax projections — where taxes are planned to rise from 54 per cent of all revenues in 2013 to 58 per cent by 2015, and then remain at that level through 2018. So, council members have their work cut out for them — if they want to do a good job.

November 28, 2014 The Delta Optimist A9 Letters to the Editor
Dream not turning out as planned
Editor: My dream was to move to Tsawwassen. I grew up in Richmond and worked for B.C. Packers for over 20 years. In the early 1990s I had the chance to buy in Tsawwassen and start a family in Delta. I have many friends in my community now and I
am a familiar face around here. However, the heavy hand of government and industry is forcing change in our small community. With a limited population base, they did the math and marched right in and did whatever they wanted. Southlands fiasco, hydro arrogance, unlawful beach
access, breathing in coal dust, heavy congestion with dangerous container and dump trucks, and now the mega malls... I am done! On Jan. 1, I’m moving to Vancouver Island to get away from this insanity. I will miss the great people of Delta. Come and join me, will you. Ralph Klostermann
Help never far away in the great community we live in Editor: On a recent afternoon I found myself in medical distress at Augustine House as I was headed into a course with David Hunt. Recognizing I was in difficulty, I turned back to take myself to the hospital when I ran into Ian Harvey,
a Tsawwassen businessman of 30 years or more that I know. Recognizing there was a bigger issue here, he took over. He issued towels, phoned for help in the building and notified my husband. He is on a tight schedule
but he let that go astray for a while. I have never been so relieved to live in the kind of community I do. I hope we can maintain this place where we recognize our pals, business clients and children. Jackie Sterling
Party at the Point tomorrow to aid fight against towers Editor: The public is invited to the Party at the Point tomorrow from 6 to 10 p.m. We will be raffling off a number of items, including a 55-inch Panasonic 3D TV and DVD player ($1,300

MLA worried bill could impact local policing Municipalities could be forced to join regional units BY
JESSICA KERR
jkerr@delta-optimist.com
Changes to the provincial Police Act passed in Victoria this week have Delta South MLA Vicki Huntington concerned the province could force municipalities to join regional policing services. “Where there’s a public safety concern, integrated policing services can be a good solution,” Huntington said. “But the government is not presenting an actual plan. Instead, it is telling all municipalities in British Columbia that they can be forced to join integrated policing services. And if they are, that they must comply and they must pick up part of the bill.” The bill, which was introduced last month and approved in the legislature Tuesday, gives the province the power to compel municipalities to join, and
early November to discuss concerns with Attorney General Susan Anton. Jackson said the minister assured her the legislation would only be used in cases where there are public safety concerns and policing is not working in a municipality. “She never really had begun to see Delta in that regard,” Jackson said. Huntington said when questioned repeatedly, the minister said there are no exemptions and the new regulations can be applied to any municipality. Huntington introduced an amendment that would have required a municipality to provide its consent before joining an integrated unit. The amendment was defeated. Huntington said she is not concerned that it would happen, but that it could. “This bill can affect any municipality,” she said.

help fund, regional police units, such as the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT). Delta politicians and staff initially had major concerns about the new regulations. In a report to council earlier this month, CAO George Harvie said the municipality was concerned that mandatory participation in integrated police services could mean a loss of service and local control, and an increase in policing costs. Staff estimated it would cost Delta an additional $800,000 to $1 million to join IHIT. “Policing in Delta is working,” Harvie said. “Delta has an enviable record of solving serious crimes and providing a high level of public safety, and this is being achieved efficiently within Delta’s own budget.” Harvie and Mayor Lois Jackson went to Victoria in

The daughter had a falling out with a friend who then created a computer hate page against her daughter, which had then been taken down. Police spoke with the daughter, giving her advice on dealing with the situation. • Nov. 23, 1:46 a.m.,

Risk of obedience Joseph, I’m pregnant. Have you ever wondered what that conversation would have been like? Mary must have been dreading it. How do you explain to your fiancé that you are a pregnant virgin, when that’s not even the strangest part of the story? How do you process hearing the girl you love tell you that she’s going to have a baby and that God is the father? Joseph didn’t believe her. How could he? Virgin birth? The father is God? Not only unprecedented, but unimaginable. Joseph loved Mary too much to publicly humiliate her but he couldn’t marry one he felt had been immoral. But when God’s angel gave him the good news that she was telling the truth, he obeyed God and went through with the marriage. There is risk to obedience. Mary
was willing to obey even though she might lose Joseph and her reputation. Joseph was willing to obey even though some would assume he had taken advantage of Mary. Because they were willing to take the risk of obedience, they experienced the greatest blessing any couple could have: to be the earthly parents of Jesus, the Saviour of the world. If they had refused, God would have found another way. But Mary and Joseph would have missed the privilege of a lifetime. Sometimes obeying God doesn’t make sense to us, or involves what seems to be a lot of risk. Take the risk of obedience. It is the best thing you can do — for this life and for eternity. Santa set to make annual stop at Cammidge House
Santa is busy at the North Pole, but he’ll be taking time out of his schedule to pay his annual visit to Cammidge House next weekend. St. Nick is scheduled to make a stop at the historic farmhouse in Boundary Bay Regional Park on Sunday, Dec. 7 from 1 to 3 p.m. The elves of the volunteer committee have been busy decking out the house in its festive finery for this family occasion. Parents are reminded to bring their own cameras to capture holiday photos. Each child will be given a bag of goodies and refreshments are available for parents. Several special prize draws will also take place. This event is free, however a donation box is available for those who may wish to make a donation

Rockin’ for Reach raises $10,000 for new centre
Legendary Vancouver bluesman Jim Byrnes joined Incognito and Michael Stewart at the Rockin’ for Reach benefit concert and dance earlier this month. The third annual event raised $10,000 for the Reach Child and Youth Development Society, money earmarked for a new building in Ladner. In three years, Rockin’ for Reach has raised just under $30,000. Reach, which started in Delta in 1959 and provides services to children and
youth with special needs, is raising $4 million to build a community-based centre in the heart of Ladner. To date, Reach is halfway to its fundraising goal. It was Incognito’s third year headlining the show and the band was thrilled to be joined by Byrnes. “We always have a great time coming out to Tsawwassen for this event,” said Rob Montgomery, lead guitarist for Incognito. “Jim had a great time too and was really happy to do it.” Over 250 guests packed
the KinVillage Community Centre for the Nov. 8 show. “It was a great turnout once again,” said Barbara Wallick, chair of the Reach Foundation. “We really want to thank everyone who made it happen, including our sponsors, donors and our volunteers, and our project partners, the Kinsmen Club of Ladner and Tsawwassen, who helped out all night long.” For more about Reach and its building project, visit www.reachchild.org or call 604-946-6622.
DSS Interact Club bakes to fill ‘Shoebox’ Delta Secondary’s Interact Club held a bake sale last week to raise money for the Union Gospel Mission’s Christmas Shoebox program. The group wanted to raise enough to purchase Christmas gifts for one teenage boy and one teenage girl. The second takes place at McKee Seniors’ Recreation Centre in Ladner on Sunday, Dec. 7 at 2 p.m. Admission, including wine and cheese, is $3 for members and $5 for non-members. The third performance is set for Sunday, Dec. 14 at KinVillage in Tsawwassen at 2 p.m. Admission is by food donation. The event is Saturday, Dec. 6 at 7:30 p.m. Admission for non-performers is $10. • Bring on the Christmas spirit and join Cedar Park at its eighth annual music and dessert evening on Saturday, Dec. 13 from 7 to 9 p.m. The evening will be filled with beautiful Christmas carols and desserts. Carolyn Arends will be entertaining the crowd with songs from her new Christmas
album Christmas — The Story of Stories. “We are so excited to have Carolyn join us for our music and dessert evening. She has so much to share with us and we feel blessed that her busy schedule permits her to join us and share her passion for the gospel,” says Lee Kosa, lead pastor at Cedar Park Church. Cedar Park is pleased to be community partners with the Delta Hospice Society again this year and proud to be able to directly impact the programs and services offered by the society through gifting the proceeds from this Christmas event. Hunting heads in Borneo Regard for spirit world remains ingrained in local tribes
BY
MARGARET DEEFHOLTS Optimist contributor
The human skull looking down balefully at me through a wicker framework suspended from the rafters of the Serubah Longhouse in Sarawak is unsettling, but according to our guide, Bong, it embodies a benevolent spirit who protects those who live here. “They are hospitable towards visitors,” Bong adds, catching my apprehensive upward glance. “So don’t worry!” The practice of decapitating enemies has long vanished in tribal Borneo in the wake of widespread Christianity. Nonetheless, ancient taboos, rituals and a regard for the spirit world remain ingrained in the minds and hearts of the Iban, the Kadazan and other Dyak tribes that live in the jungles of Sabah and Sarawak. “When a warrior brought home the head of his enemy,” says Bong, “it was displayed on a pole while everyone celebrated the victory with feasting and danc-
ing. The shaman would then perform special rituals of appeasement to make sure that the skull’s previous inhabitant had no vengeful hang-ups, and would instead act as a guardian of the longhouse by warding off evil influences.” In keeping with this idea, wicker baskets surrounding the skulls above us have a collection of small offerings to make the spirits happy, including a few cigarette butts. Nicotine addiction evidently still persists in the afterlife. I drain the proffered glass of fiery tuak as I raise a toast to the shrunken heads, which have now actually begun to look quite friendly. The Serubah Longhouse at Nanga Sampa lies deep in the jungles of Sarawak. Travelling the rushing waters of the Lemanak River, our dug-out canoes looked as frail as peanut shells. As I stand now at the entrance of the longhouse, the communal gallery seems to stretch a long, long way to the far end. The slatted wooden floor

is perched on stilts and the area below, glimpsed between the planks, boasts a clutch of hens and a vociferously crowing cockerel. The 25 rooms leading off the hallway are family units that accommodate anywhere from four to 14 members and while families prepare meals in the privacy of their own rooms and manage their own farmland plots independent of one
another, they all get together here on the ruai hallway to socialize, attend council meetings and celebrate festivals. In this closely-knit tribal society, the longhouse functions like a village under one roof and affords security and a comforting sense of unity. As we walk along the vast hallway, women smile or nod as they carry out
their daily chores, a granny flashes us a toothless grin, mothers rock their babies in little bamboo cradles and a small boy, absorbed in whittling a stick, ignores us as he frowns in concentration. We sit cross-legged on the floor, while watching the Ngajat, a traditional Iban dance of welcome. The ancient ex-headman, Budit, appears wearing a slit loincloth, several bead neck-
laces and a feathered headdress that all but sweeps the ceiling. A couple of young women wearing coronets as delicate as spun sugar, beaded necklaces trimmed with red pom-poms and aprons of silver coins, take centre stage. They smile and beckon us to join them. We circle the floor in a gleeful performance that owes more to tuak inspired confidence than talent. The time has come to say farewell and we present the tuai rumah (headman) with boxes of candies and cookies in appreciation of their Iban hospitality. The kids hop up and down in excited anticipation while the women lay out equal portions for each family on the hallway mats. No doubt the bony, hollow-eyed amicably grinning “guardians” at the entrance to the hallway received their fair share as well. Exercise a must as you age Positive effects are staggering p.j. wren
Well on Your Way You can either age gracefully or fight it every step of the way, but however you choose to age, there is one thing that must be done in order to stay above ground the longest. This one thing can decrease your resting heart rate (placing less stress on your heart), increase the heart’s ability to pump blood, and decrease both blood vessel stiffness and blood pressure. It can also speed up the “emptying” of your intestines, increase your bone density, increase your muscle size and your strength, improve your metabolism (so you become a better fat-burning machine), and lower your body fat, blood sugar and insulin levels. In addition, it can decrease your LDL (“bad”) cholesterol levels while increasing your good cholesterol (HDL), improve your quality of sleep and your reflexes, decrease the chances of depression, all while improving your cognitive abilities. While this fairly impressive list can be managed by roughly one to twodozen different medications (author’s best guess), it can also be handled by participating in a regular exercise program (science’s best fact). The research on exercise and its positive effect on the human body as we age is staggering. Studies such as Baltimore’s Longitudinal Study of Aging confirm this. America’s longest running scientific study on
We’ve got you covered
aging started in 1958 to answer the question: What is aging? You see, once we clearly know what happens to the body physiologically as we age, science can then best address the relationship between disease and agerelated changes, as well as make recommendations on how to age well. What do these scientists recommend? That exercise and physical activity are good for you — period. That is a direct quote from their website. They go on to say that not only can exercise reduce our risk of developing some diseases that occur with age, it can also prove to be an effective treatment if we have disease. Exercise is our medicine, without the bottle. You needn’t look too far in this area to find amazing examples of aging well through exercise. In fact, a recent workout at the Fred Gingell stairs is what prompted me to write this column. While doing my usual workout, I kept getting out run by a man who was clearly older than me. Since I consider myself fairly fit, he was definitely well above “fairly fit.” I finally managed to catch up with him (mind you, it was at the top of the stairs and he was done his workout) and I introduced myself. Ian Sunderland and his just as equally incredible wife, Sue, are 62 and 61, respectively, and have been exercising in some form or another for over 30 years. In addition to kicking my butt on the stairs, they also weight train, cycle and ski on a regular basis. Ian explained to me that exercise makes them feel good, and in his opinion, “delays the inevitable.”
Ian couldn’t be closer to the truth. Two more examples of how moving in your older years can battle age are Point Roberts resident Doreen Peltier and South Delta resident Shirley Caine. Peltier is 74 years young and participates twice a week in my boot camp class, performing physical feats of excellence using the TRX, kettlebells, dumbbells and her own body weight — and she only began exercising at 62. It’s proof that you can begin at any time in your life. She also claims she will keep on exercising for as long as she can lace up her runners. Then there’s the determined Caine, who can plank, press and squat at 79 years young. She saw what exercise could do for older people when she worked at a seniors’ home for 15 years. They did their own study there, of starting small amounts of exercise with the residents, and found the seniors became stronger and happier because of exercise. Caine says her goal with fitness is fairly straightforward: She wants to exercise as much as she can as she ages because she knows that if she doesn’t use it, she will lose it. Ladner actress Katelyn Mager received multiple honours at the Joey Awards earlier this month. She came away with three awards and was nominated for seven overall. “I was really shocked, actually. I wasn’t even expecting to win one,” said Mager, 13. She won awards for her work in the feature film Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters (Young Ensemble Cast in a Made for Television/Straight to Video Feature/Feature Film), short film Floodplain (Young Actress age 11-12 in a Short Film) and Hallmark TV series When Calls the Heart (Young Ensemble Cast in a Dramatic TV Series). She said going to the awards ceremony was really fun because she got to get dressed up, see friends and hang out with people she hasn’t seen in a long time. She played Young Thalia in Sea of Monsters. Mager, who took sword training for the role, called working on the film a great experience. Mager played Young Vic on Floodplain, which was shown at the Cannes Film Festival. She also recently found
out she’ll be back for a second season on When Calls the Heart. The series is set in the 1900s and filmed in Fort Langley. The Joey Awards, which
celebrate young Canadian performers, were handed out at a ceremony in New Westminster. It marked the first year for the awards.

The Delta Youth Support Link Society’s Encore & More fashion show is right around the corner. The event, set for next Friday, will include casual, semi-formal and formal wear, notes DYSL executive director Kim Davidson. All of the clothing will be brand name, she says, listing BCBG, Gucci and Banana Republic as examples. “There isn’t a single item that’ll be worn that’ll be over $30 in that show,” she says. Models will include youth and senior volunteers and customers of the DYSL WearHouse Thrift Store. The show, which will include clothes for all ages, is the big fundraiser for the society’s bursary program, says Davidson. Last year the society gave out over $30,000 worth of bursaries to students at

RETIREMENT RESIDENCE
V
olunteers came together to form the Cloverdale Senior Citizens Society in 1956. The society obtained CMHC financing to build 16 cottages for the housing of low-income seniors in Cloverdale. Many people enjoyed safe and reasonable accommodation over the next 60 years.
However, as time passed, the cottages fell into disrepair. The destruction of the old cottages needed to be done before construction began. Neighbors watched and supervised as Bethshan was reborn. A project coordinator oversaw the interests of the society through construction to ensure future residents had units to live in that were well built. The board of directors toured the building almost monthly. In October, when the roof was not completed, the board stepped lightly in the darkness to review progress. Bethshan Gardens opened January 15, 2009. Beautiful interior finishes welcomed guests and dignitaries to the official opening ceremonies. Four residents moved in on opening day, two of whom are still enjoying life at Bethshan. During the first week of organizing, cooking and welcoming other residents, it was decided to have a congratulatory and complementary glass of wine with Sunday dinner. That tradition continues today.
Over the next five years, more than 100 residents have enjoyed their suites at Bethshan. Sixty different staff members have had employment.
Say yes to the friendly, relaxed atmosphere of Bethshan Gardens.
Beautiful gardens surround our independent living retirement residence.
O
Bethshan offers one and two bedroom units on four floors. Rents are all inclusive so there are no worries for residents about routine expenses. Two meals a day, light weekly housekeeping service, overnight emergency response staff and a variety of activities are included in the monthly fee. Rents are modest compared to the marketplace in keeping with the intent of providing housing to lower income individuals. The non-profit ownership of Bethshan also assists in keeping rent to modest levels. Bethshan is home to 70 people, singles and couples. A home-like philosophy determines many day-to- day decisions. Small pets are welcomed. Modification of suites to residents taste is encouraged. A casual, friendly atmosphere provides a comfortable living style for residents. A large common room provides an ideal venue for movie night, bingo, crafts or just reading from the library. A new bus has been added to the service offering day trips. The future looks bright for Bethshan. Many more residents will be cared for in this independent living retirement residence. The first five years are just the beginning.

Hawks hang with heavyweights
Delta battles hard with powerhouses North Vancouver and Richmond but comes away empty Delta Ice Hawks at least came away with some confidence in a couple of spirit performances against the top teams in the Pacific Junior Hockey League over the past week. With the regular season just past the halfway mark, first place in the Tom Shaw Conference has become a two horse race between the North Vancouver Wolf Pack and Richmond Sockeyes. The Wolf Pack is enjoying its best campaign in franchise history with a sizzling 21-1-0-2 record that includes a current 17 game win streak. That’s good enough for a six point cushion on the Sockeyes (18-4-0-2 ) who are 12 points better than the next best team in the league. Meanwhile, the Ice Hawks (11-10-1) are sitting third in the conference — four points better than the Grandview Steelers. Delta did give the Wolf Pack all it could handle Tuesday night, dropping a 4-2 decision on home ice. A second period goal from rookie Andreas Siagris put the locals on even terms and they had several quality chances to take lead. However, the visitors notched the game winner at the 6:11 mark of the third and added an empty netter after the Hawks hit the goalpost on two separate occasions in search of the equalizer. Jake Fletcher had the other Delta goal, while former Ice Hawk blueliner Dan Delbianco earned first star honours thanks to a pair of goals. The Hawks also hung tough at Minoru Arenas last Thursday, dropping a 3-2 decision to the Sockeyes. Richmond broke a 1-1 tie on third period goals by Brodie Crawford and South Delta Minor Hockey Association alumni Tyler Andrews. Spencer Schoen’s power play goal with 59 seconds remaining set up a frantic finish with Delta coming close to getting the equalizer past another SDMHA alumni in the the Sockeyes’ net — Nathan Alalouf. Fletcher had the other goal for the Ice Hawks as a productive stretch for the first-year 17-year-old is an encouraging sign for the club going forward. The Ice Hawks return to action Saturday when they visit the Port Moody Panthers, looking to extend a 12 point lead on the conference’s last place team. Delta also hosts Mission City on Tuesday at 7:35 p.m.

McNamaras officially headed to UCLA in September 2015
Megan and Nicole McNamara are officially UCLA Bruins. The Grade 12 twins from Tsawwassen signed their national letter of intent last week and will attend UCLA next fall. The McNamaras will be members of the Bruins sand volleyball team which plays a spring schedule against mainly other California schools and concludes its season at the national championships in early May. The pair is coming off winning a silver medal at last summer’s 2014
Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing, China. They are currently winding down their high school volleyball career with the South Delta Sun Devils, looking for their fourth consecutive B.C. championship this week in Parksville. They verbally committed to UCLA back at the start of their Grade 11 year. “The McNamara twins are skilled beyond their years and have an exceptionally high volleyball IQ,” said UCLA coach Stein Metzger in a school release. “They have already
had a wealth of international experience including a recent silver medal in China. I’m excited to see this duo contribute to the UCLA volleyball legacy.” Both are 5-foot-9-inches tall while Megan is right-handed and plays on the left side, Nicole is lefthanded and plays on the right side. Mischa Harris has been their coach at the Sideout Beach Volleyball Club in Vancouver for the last three years where the McNamaras are also the three-time Canadian
champions (U16, U18 and Women’s Open). Nicole said she chose UCLA because, “I have always dreamed of living in California and UCLA is a great school in both academics and athletics and the weather is nice.” Megan said she chose UCLA because, “of the academics, coaching staff and location.” Proving the psychic twin connection, they both also mentioned they chose UCLA because “it is only a short flight to Vancouver.”

South Delta Awesome Midget C2 hockey team celebrate their tournament win in Lake Cowichan.
An Awesome time in Lake Cowichan
The South Delta Midget C2 “Awesome” lived up to their name, coming home champions of the Lake Cowichan Midget Invitiational Hockey Tournament. The event was contested by eight entries: the Awesome, Powell River and six teams from Vancouver Island. The Awesome opened their tournament against Port McNeill on Friday night, winning 15-1. Bren Traher led the way with four goals. Spencer Richardson scored two goals and added five assists. Ethan MacLellan had the game winner. The Awesome played two games on Saturday, winning the noon contest against Nanaimo 9-0 and beating Comox Valley 6-1 in the afternoon match. Pavel Dhah and Carter Warn each had four points in the early game. Nathan Simms and Ethan Fowler were both plus-six playing defense, as was Adam Chan up front. In the afternoon game, Jeevan Bath paced the Awesome with two goals and two assists. Both South Delta and Cowichan Valley headed into the championship game with perfect 3-0 records. The Awesome jumped out to a 2-0 first period lead on goals by Kyle Ainge (assisted by Cody Johnstone and Matthew Berends) and Pierre Maunsell en route to a 5-0 victory to claim the championship trophy. Cole Hendy earned all four wins in goal, including two shutouts. The Awesome are coached by Andrew Richardson, Bernie Berends and Aaron MacLellan. They are expertly managed by Laurel Richardson. Unavailable for the weekend action were Nathan Adamson, Quinn Cole and Sheldon Vantol.
Bantam Rams face Langley for provincial championship South Delta Rams will be looking to complete a perfect season when they take on the hometown Langley Mustangs for the B.C. Community Football Association’s provincial championship on Saturday at McLeod Athletic Park. The Rams went 10-0-0 in Vancouver Mainland Football League regular season play and clinched a spot in the provincial title game with an easy 44-0 semi-final win over the Chilliwack Giants last week. South Delta is poised for its second Bantam provincial title in three years. The Rams cruised to a 37-0 win over Abbotsford in the 2012 title game, also played in Langley. Game time Saturday is noon.

2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014.
On August 14, 2014, we asked for the Fraser Elliot group to come to our home and not only give us a free evaluation of the value but more importantly to us was what they would do to increase exposure and traffic through it. Previously we had our home on the market with a different realtor for 5 months and in the last 2 months it had only been shown once per month and we felt this was not adequate. After hearing of the many forms of advertising and exposure to the market, how they would pay a stager to meet with us and tell us the best way to use existing furniture and space to make the home more appealing we were impressed and then discussed pictures and virtual tours. The pictures and virtual tour were amazing and obviously done by a professional. After seeing them on line both my wife and I jokingly agreed if we did not already own the home, we would buy it.We signed a listing agreement that same day.Since that time we have had 11 showings, and 2 offers to purchase. The first one on August 27 and the one that has resulted in the sale of our home on September 22, 2014.Immediately after each and every showing we received a follow up call from which ever member of the team showed the home with information on how the showing went, this was much appreciated and did not leave us in the dark wondering about feedback.Any phone calls we made to the team were either answered in person or returned within 5 minutes. The home they sold for us was a single family dwelling and we still own a condo that without a doubt will be listed by the Fraser Elliot Group should they want it at the time. The service was unbelievable, professional and we would recommend the Fraser Elliot Group to anyone wanting to buy or sell a home. - Ken and Jocelyn Pike
We had excellent service from the Fraser Elliott team with our recent house sale. We would particularly like to recognize the expertise and advice provided by the team as well as the effective advertising. Thank you! - John Higenbottam Thanks for all of the showings and work you did to sell the place. We won't hesitate to recommend you to our friends and family. - Mike Carston & Leslie Valair
We wanted to thank you for all your efforts in selling our home here in Ladner. There were a number of points that really stood out for us through the whole process. · Team work ? there was a real sense of team work among all the staff at Fraser Elliott Remax. We felt everyone was working toward the common goal of selling our house in an effective manner and for the desired price. · Communication ? throughout the sales process there was clear and consistent communication provided to us including interest in the house, potential opportunities, and the current state of the Ladner housing market. This was critical in establishing and maintaining trust throughout the sales process. · Relevant advise ? there were a many times where advice was offered but it was done in a manner whereby the reasons for the advice were clearly articulated, but the final decisions were very much left to ourselves to make without any pressure. This was very beneficial and really helped us feel Fraser Elliott Remax had our best interests at heart. · Marketing strategy ? we really appreciated your use of leading edge strategies to market our home, particular your use of social media. We really felt our home was being exposed to many potential buyers that perhaps traditional marketing methods would never have reached. It also showed the commitment of Fraser Elliot Remax to invest money in marketing our house. In summary, we really enjoyed our experience working with Fraser Elliott Remax and would have no hesitation in recommending the company to anyone interested in buying or selling a home. As you know, we have now asked you to be our realtors as we look for our new home so we must be satisfied! Sincerely, - Graeme and Veronique Byrne
When we made the discussion to sell our home we had a number of real estate agents in mind, we decided to start with Fraser Elliott to do an evaluation on our home and discuss the marketing process, on completion of the discussion we determined there was no need to discuss our home sale with other real estate agents. The home preparation and marketing was above and beyond our expectations, throughout the listing and showing process they were always in communication with us. The Fraser Elliott Real Estate Group are truly professionals when it comes to real estate business and are No. 1 for good reason. Would not hesitate to call upon their services in the future and highly recommend them to anyone looking to sell of purchase real estate.!
To all the staff at Fraser Elliott Group, The one word that seems to exemplify your company is enthusiasm, from Fraser’s first look at our property to each of the staff that had anything to do with the sale, each of you showed such enthusiasm and gave us such support, you have no idea who much that had been lacking from previous efforts.Another word is professionalism, every detail was handled with such a competence and professionalism, the staging advice, the incredible photography even the impressive wording on the listing all first class and obviously very effective. But the final proof of Fraser Elliott’s excellent service came with the sale of our property in under 30 days from our first meeting. That in itself, speaks more eloquently than any other praise we might offer. And we do offer that praise, and, recommendation to anyone who is looking for enthusiastic, professional and excellent service in their real estate company. Look no farther than Fraser Elliott! With our thanks, - Alex and Cindy Adamson
It used to be that to sell a house you engaged a Realtor to provide an MLS listing and hope for a sale. Fraser Elliott with his team at the Fraser Elliott Group have completely changed the role of the Realtor in South Delta. From the first meeting to discuss a potential listing through to the removal of subjects you knew someone was in control and driving the sale, at no time did we feel we were in a wait and see what happens relationship. Whether you are looking to sell your home or buy a new home, we would strongly recommend the Fraser Elliott Group. - Steve and Julie Knight We are so happy with the job that the Fraser Elliot team did for us. They helped us with selling our current home and finding our new home. Jennifer and Garrett have tons of experience and are extremely professional agents. We liked the extras that came with Fraser Elliot. The team approach meant we never needed to wait to talk to someone if we had a question. The free consultation with an interior designer/stager was a nice touch. Our house sold in no time and we found our dream home! - Leeann K. and Brian T.
I couldn't be happier with the Fraser Elliot Team!!! They really give you and experience when selling your home. From the photography, the stager, the realtors who all work together. They honestly give you the best of the best. The Fraser Elliot team work hard for you and are so professional and just as important ... personable. They came recommended to me,and I would only recommended them to anyone looking to sell or buy! I honestly don't think the outcome for my sell would have been the same with anyone else! Thank you Garrett, Amber, Fraser, Julie and everyone else on the team! - Adrienne Fahr It was a pleasure working with you on the sale of our house. My uncle was thrilled that the sale went through so quickly, and for full asking price! We’ve already recommended your services to others. - John Fotheringham
The Fraser Elliott Team, l'd like to take this opportunity to extend my gratitude to you and your entire staff on what l consider to be an outstanding job on the sale of my condo. From our first meeting you told me that you would treat the sale of my condo the same way you would handle selling a $3 million home. You and your team stood by your word and did exactly that. I couldn't be happier! With the extremely tight window time you and your team was working with you made it all fit together. An outstanding performance by you all and my thanks and gratitude for all your hard work. I feel privileged to have met and worked together with such a congenial group as yourselves and will pass my positive recommendations on the appropriate people. Thanks again for the outstanding effort you all put in for me. Sincerely, - Dave Ennis

Here are just some of our many testimonials we've received from our recent clients. Over the past few months I have had the pleasure of dealing with the Fraser Elliott Group. My mother's condo had been on the market for 18 months with two separate realtors. We had taken the suggestions of the last realtor and had the place completely painted with a neutral pallet but alas, it sat empty for the next few months with only a couple of showings. I had hesitated in calling Fraser Elliott Group because in all honesty, they had so many listings and I didn't think they would pay much attention to mom's condo. I finally made the decision to call them and was pleasantly surprised. Their professionalism, track record and assurance that mom's condo was just as important as any listing they had as well as their explanation of their unique marketing strategies made me choose them with confidence. Inside of a week we accepted an offer on the condo, fairly close to list price (which was the same price as the previous realtor had listed it). Unfortunately before subjects were removed, the deal fell through however, Fraser Elliott Group had another offer quickly and the condo sold close to list price. The condo was basically sold in just over a month with this group in a market where condo sales were fairly flat. Shortly after that, we decided to sell our family home. There was a lot of sentiment involved in the decision as it is the home my father built. in 1968 with pride and love. We bought the home from my mom 15 years ago after my dad passed away and happily raised our children there. When Fraser and Garrett came to see us I expressed that I did not want to sell to someone who was going to tear it down and it was important that the people who buy the house loves it as much as we have. They didn't make me feel silly, in fact I believe they empathized with how I must be feeling. The interest was overwhelming once listed. The drive by's and showings were numerous and the house sold within 6 days to the perfect young couple who look at the home as theirs for the next 40 years. Presently my daughter is using Fraser Elliott Groups buyers agent Jennifer to help her find an apartment. She has been wonderful and patient with our daughter who is a first time buyer. I've been involved all the way on the side lines and Jennifer could have easily deferred to me a number of times, but is dealing directly with our daughter teaching and walking her through this monumental step in her life. Fraser Elliott's team has been so professional, patient and understanding. They've explained who they are, how they market and walked us through every stage giving us sound advice every step of the way. They provided a consult with a stager for hints to make the house look better for pictures and showings; there was plenty of notice given for showings; the photographer was professional and quick with an awesome results; the person that came in to take accurate measurements of house and property was efficient and fast. Its no wonder the Fraser Elliott Group is #3 in the world. The team is so professional and so on the ball. They take all of your comments and concerns to heart , offer sound, fair advice and definitely do the best for their client. I highly recommend their services. In my opinion and having dealt with a number of realtors recently, they are the best out there.

Our home had een on the market for two years with little success when we resolved to contact Fraser Elliot and his group in order to market the property. What attracted us initially and what we wanted to take advantage of, was Fraser's high profile and his extensive and comprehensive marketing plan. What we didn’t expect was was the quality of the professionals in his group that handled all aspects of marketing and sale. The service they delivered was thorough, timely and effective. Above all, the service felt personal. Our home was SOLD within two months of listing at a price point we were very comfortable with. Perfect! - Peter Woeste
This is how efficient the Fraser Elliott team is… some kids took our for sale sign as a prank and put down the street. Fraser’s team had it back in its spot before we even knew it was gone! This is the second time we have used Fraser Elliott to sell our home and we cannot say enough about how professional and efficient he and his team are!! From our first meeting where Fraser and Garrett spent three hours discussing the upcoming sale to having the sold sign on two weeks later… they are awesome!! The first time we used Fraser to sell our home it was done in a day!!! Now as we look to buy another home we are working with one of his team again!! We would recommend him to our friends and family in a minute!! Thanks so much to all of you for your hard working in getting the job done!! - Sandra and Philippe
Our experience working with the Fraser Elliott group on the sale of our home, was great. We really liked the team approach that they provided. Always someone at the office to answer your email or show your house. The showings were by appointment rather than open house which we really liked. We also really appreciated Kash (a stager) that they provided free of charge, to help us get the home ready for photos and staging. I’m not sure we would have thought of that ourselves and it really helped. We had extra furniture to move and the free loaner moving truck provided came in handy when moving it to a storage unit. The team of Garrett, Amber and Rachel who primarily showed our home were all great to deal with, friendly and personable, and the feedback they gave us after viewings, kept us positive. There were weekly updates and it really felt that the team was doing everything they could, to ensure our house got the exposure needed and the right buyer was found. Thank you to every member of the Fraser Elliott Group!! - Rosalind Cleroux
Fraser’s team are experts in their field. I was blown away by their level of communication with me, I couldn’t believe they were at every showing and giving me feedback on how it went. I could tell right away that Fraser heavily invests in selling your product, from advertising material, videos, photography, facebook, newspapers, web presence and he even sent a complimentary stager to re-arrange my home to maximise our selling potential. I don’t know why you wouldn’t use Fraser Elliott to sell your home. - Ian
I am beyond thrilled and relieved. Thank you and your team for all the hard work and effort you put into the selling of my home and the purchase of the condo. You are the best!! - Brenda Swinglehurst Thank you so very much for all your hard dedicated work in selling my mom’s house. We appreciate SO much everything you did and how hard you worked to sell the house...we will HIGHLY recommend you in the future!! - Diane DeMille and family
From past real estate experience we firmly believe that dealing with a high profile realtor who is supported by a team of experts is the way to sell a home. Hence, when we decided to sell our Ladner home a call to Fraser Elliott was the logical first move. Our experience with Fraser and his group exceeded all our expectations. Firstly, the marketing done by Fraser Elliott is targeted to a larger and better defined audience than that of other local realtors .The professionalism and communication skill of the entire group is exceptional Our main contact was Garrett Chu who kept us constantly informed of any new developments. The team approach, with back-up in the office made all aspects of the sale seamless. We would not hesitate to recommend Fraser Elliott to our friends and acquaintances. - John and Shirley Jaye
Working with Fraser, and his amazing team, has been an all around great experience from day one. We had listed our house previously with a different agent and were not excited about the process of trying to sell our home again. We took their advice on pricing and any little changes we could do to make our home look its very best, and we were thrilled to accept a great offer within a few days, before it even hit MLS! We could not be happier with our decision to go with Fraser and his team and would highly recommend them to anyone buying or selling in the South Delta area. Thanks! - Ash and Laura Thomas
