It’s been more than a decade since Delta council decided to make paying down the municipality’s debt a priority, and as Lois Jackson begins her sixth, and final, term as mayor, Delta is close to becoming debt free. In 2000, as Jackson embarked on her first mayoral term, Delta’s debt sat at $58 million. By the end of this year, the total debt will be down to $5.5 million — $1.5 million in general debt and $4 million left to pay on the Sungod Recreation Centre expansion, which was approved by North Delta residents in a referendum and is being paid solely by homeowners in that area. If all goes according to plan, the general debt will be paid off by 2018, and the last payment on the Sungod debt is scheduled for 2022. The decision to focus on paying down the debt and move to a pay-as-you-go system largely came together in 2002 after the municipality agreed to borrow for the Sungod expansion. “So for the last 12 years that has been our focus,” said municipal finance director Karl Preuss. “I think it’s been successful. I think the other thing is whatever we’ve been able to pay off and save in interest payments, we’ve applied to our capital projects and that’s how we’ve now be able to build the artificial fields, we’ve been able to do the second expansion on Sungod, we’re looking at North Delta Rec Centre.” In 2000, Delta was paying $10.6 million to service its debt. Today, that’s down to $1.2 million and, Preuss said, the municipality has

Mayor Lois Jackson (second from left) was pleased to see the turf field at Ladner’s Dugald Morrison Park built without borrowing any money. been able take the difference and put it into various reserve funds to cover capital projects, infrastructure upgrades and emergencies. Preuss said one area that has really benefited from the municipality’s debt-free policy is the road improvement program, which has included upgrades to the Ladner Trunk Road/ Arthur Drive intersection and improvements to Ladner Trunk Road east of Highway 17A. There have also been upgrades along 92nd and 84th avenues in North Delta. “I think those are some of the things that you can start doing when you’re not paying debt and interest payments,” Preuss said. “We’ve worked very hard and the staff have worked very hard to ensure that the community gets all the things they need and yet we make sure that we don’t borrow and we’ve gotten ourselves basically out of debt,” Jackson said.
“The numbers of playing fields, turf fields, all the amenities we’ve put into the corporation in 15 years is huge — the animal shelter, all the stuff we’ve done out at Boundary Bay Airport, all the parks and rec stuff, huge numbers, the overpass at 80th — all of that was done without borrowing so it can be done if you work with your staff.” The municipality has the money needed to build a new North Delta Recreation Centre, which is estimated to come in at $13.5 million, Jackson said, and there was enough in the reserve fund when the Ladner Leisure Centre ran into trouble earlier this year. When Delta made the decision to go with a pay-as-you-go policy, the municipality was in need of a fire hall for the Tilbury industrial area. Jackson said the initial consensus was to borrow the money to pay for it. “I said, ‘No, no, no, we’ll

save it up,’ which we did and by the time it was constructed, we had saved all the money that we needed.” Jackson said the project was also delayed because the municipality hadn’t yet secured the land, but it was only four years before the fire hall was ready for service. The mayor, who was first elected to council in 1972 and has served continuously except for one term, said the municipality had got into the habit of borrowing. “What was happening at the time was every year council would borrow $1 million for dikes and drainage. Over 12 years, that becomes $12 million and then you’ve got to pay the interest on that and then you’ve got to pay it off,” she said. “I said, we’re not going to do that any more. We’re going to pay as you go and we are going to put the priorities down and it will be very simple. The wants
to have, they come second. The must haves, they come first.” The elimination of the municipal debt will undoubtedly be a Jackson legacy, but there’s a school of thought that borrowing doesn’t always have to carry a negative connotation. Calling Delta’s policy a “relatively conservative strategy,” Lindsay Meredith, a marketing strategy professor at Simon Fraser University, said taking on debt isn’t always a bad idea. “The trick is to not get stupid about it ... the trick is to figure out exactly what the municipality needs now and what you can wait to save up for.” Some argue that borrowing money is just part of running a municipality and its helps the economy, or that it’s not fair to ask current homeowners to pay for a facility when all future residents will reap the benefits. Meredith said there’s validity to that argument, but it often becomes a revolving door where future residents will end up paying for another new amenity or improvement. Meredith argues that while it is a conservative approach, and a good political strategy, it is not sustainable. “Downstream, sooner or later, the municipality will get into a situation where the community needs new capital projects,” he said, adding the alternative to not taking on any new debt can be large property tax increases. The mayor disagrees. “If we can see it coming and we know it’s coming, we can plan for it.” Jackson said she has no plans to change Delta’s payas-you-go policy.

Diagnosis brings tough choices
Ladner couple finds relief and information through a new program run by the Vancouver Prostate Centre BY
ANNE MULLENS
Optimist contributor
When Charles Reid was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2011, his cancer was small and growing slowly. On his doctor’s advice he chose “active surveillance,” closely monitoring it without treatment. For three years this worked very well for the 57-year-old Ladner businessman and father of three grown children. Earlier this year, however, tests showed his cancer was growing. “Suddenly I was agonizing over what I should do. My kids are saying, ‘Dad, just get it out!’ But I have been really uncertain about the best treatment option. There are so many choices and all have significant pros and cons.” Trying to make a decision was stressful for both him and his wife, Julie. She had witnessed her father die from metastasized prostate cancer, an outcome they feared. They felt they must make a treatment decision, but also thought they lacked enough information to make an informed choice about something that was sure to impact their quality of life for the next 20 to 30 years. Dr. Larry Goldenberg, director of development and supportive care at the Vancouver Prostate Centre, notes prostate cancer is the most common cancer for men in B.C., with some 3,500 men diagnosed each year. “Because of advances in both diagnosis and treatment, men are diagnosed much earlier with the disease now, and live on average three times longer than they did just 20 years ago. But that means they must live much longer with the side effects of treatment, which potentially can be substantial,” says Goldenberg. The Reids found both relief and information from a new program run by the Vancouver Prostate Centre, called the Prostate Cancer Supportive Care Program. The first of its kind in Canada, with an

Ladner’s Charles Reid was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2011. emphasis on the partner as well the patient, the program is much more than a support group. It consists so far of five distinct modules providing clinical services and education presented by experts. It provides patients and their partners with the skills needed to cope when first diagnosed and to help manage the stresses associated with primary treatments and their side effects. It has even helped the Reids decide not to do treatment right away, but to continue to monitor Charles’ slow-growing cancer. These integrated modules also
deal with other treatment options, sexual function, pelvic floor physiotherapy to help with any posttreatment incontinence, lifestyle management with diet and exercise, and androgen deprivation therapy to slow any cancer spread. The program was established with funding from the Specialist Services Committee, a joint committee of the doctors of B.C. and the Ministry of Health, and is supported by the Prostate Cancer Foundation B.C. It recently received a $1 million grant from the provincial government for further development.
GORD GOBLE
“If there were just one recommended therapy for prostate cancer, we wouldn’t need our lead off module on treatment options,” explains Richard Wassersug, PhD, an adjunct professor in the Department of Urologic Sciences at UBC. Wassersug is not only one of the co-founders of the program, but a prostate cancer survivor. The inclusion of the patient’s partner is also one of the program’s particular strengths, he says. The Reids earlier this year attended an “Introduction to Primary Treatment Options”
session with two other couples. Wassersug set the tone of the intimate atmosphere, with relevant input of his own cancer journey. Diagnosed 16 years ago, his path has encompassed the gamut of treatments, including surgery, radiation and hormone therapy. “And I am still here!” smiles Wassersug, to the visible relief of his small audience. During the session couples heard from urologist Dr. James Huang, who described the pros and cons of active surveillance and surgical options and then from the B.C. Cancer Agency’s radiation oncologist Dr. Mira Keyes, who described the pros and cons of radiation therapies. “While support, information and medical expertise are available at the B.C. Cancer Agency, this program provides an additional coordinated approach for the patients and their partners to help them cope with all aspects of the disease and treatments,” says Keyes. Each couple then met privately with Huang and Keyes together to discuss their specific pathology report. “It was incredibly helpful and reassuring,” says Reid, who was told by the specialists that his slow-growing cancer gives him lots of time to make a decision. He can still watch and wait. “I’m not scared anymore,” Julie says. Goldenberg notes the program is unique in not only having the medical consultation with two specialists at the same time, but also in providing a safe place for men and their partners to talk and share concerns. “I think that physicians have to be cognizant that prostate cancer and its treatment is a major psychological trauma. Addressing the quality of life ramifications is just as important as the primary treatment for the disease.” The program is offered in Vancouver. Passes help get children active Civic programs offering free access result in greater facility usage Young people are participating in record numbers at municipal recreation facilities. Two recent civic staff reports reveal increases in both the use and number of recreation passes issued to children and youth. Initiated in 2005, a municipal program enables free drop-in use of recreation facilities to all Grade 5 and 6 students who live in Delta and a 10-admission pass card for Grade 7 students. Drop-in activities include public skates, swims and open gym sessions. Recent statistics provided by municipal hall show a 7.4 per cent increase in usage for the 2013/14 school year compared to the previous year, with an overall admission total of 38,882 and a total of 2,626 passes issued. Earlier this year, Delta council approved a $20 Child and Youth Summer Promotional Drop-in Pass to encourage participation in drop-in programs during the summer. A total of 3,404 summer passes were sold, leading to an increase in child and youth attendance and revenue. Revenue nearly dou-
bled this year from $62,717 in 2013 to $123,035 in 2014. On the heels of the success of this year’s program, council has approved a similar summer pass for 2015. Complimentary admissions through the free dropin pass program increased from 1,975 in 2013 to 4,081 in 2014. “Delta’s recreation pass programs offer tremendous value to the community and families living in Delta by providing our youth with a safe environment to learn new skills, be active and have fun,” said Mayor Lois Jackson. “Delta was one of the first municipalities in the province to recognize this opportunity to engage youth in our community in physical activity, and we are pleased that our program serves as a template for similar programs across B.C.” Students can visit any Delta recreation facility with their birth certificate and proof of address until Aug. 31, 2015 to obtain their free Grade 5, 6 or 7 pass for this school year. For more information on the programs, visit www. delta.ca.

DOVE members taking anti-violence message out to the community Delta Opposes Violence Everywhere (DOVE) will be out in the community today and tomorrow educating students and the public on preventing violence in any relationship. Saturday, Dec. 6 is National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women. On that day in 1989, 14 women were gunned down at Montreal’s Ecole Polytechnique simply for being women. Many people mark the day by wearing purple ribbons to remember women affected by violence and to promote discussion and action around violence against women. As part of the campaign, DOVE will be holding several events throughout the community — handing out purple ribbons and provid-
ing information, resources and support to the public. Today, DOVE will be at local high schools, including Delta Secondary, during the lunch hour. On Saturday, the committee will set up at both the Ladner Leisure Centre and Sungod Recreation Centre in North Delta from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. DOVE includes members from various community service agencies in Delta, including Delta Police Victim Services and the domestic violence unit. Its main objective is to increase public awareness surrounding violence in any type of relationship, and working toward reducing any gaps or duplications in services that may exist in the area. For more information about DOVE, visit www. deltapolice.ca/dove.

TED MURPHY
MURPHY’S LAW It’s one thing to play a key role within a health region, but it’s quite another to be a fully functioning community hospital. Much has been said and written recently about Delta Hospital as staff and supporters turn up the heat on government in an effort to restore a surgical program that had the scalpel taken to it more than a decade ago. Doctors went public about six weeks ago in a bid to, among other things, extend operating room hours beyond 3 p.m. so patients requiring urgent procedures could be accommodated here rather than being transferred to another hospital. Fraser Health has been cool to the idea and has taken pains to change the narrative, reinforcing the notion that every hospital has a role to play in a regional network. To that end, Delta Hospital has been positioned as a day surgery hub where well over 5,000 procedures were performed last year. With the number of surgeries on the rise, it would seem curious that the alarm has been sounded over restricted operating room hours, but that’s because there’s a distinct difference in how our local hospital is viewed. It’s great from a regional perspective that patients from Maple Ridge or Langley can travel to Delta for a colonoscopy, and I suspect the ability to accommodate these folks here reduces the pressure elsewhere in the region. However, our hospital’s status as a day surgery centre does little for the local resident in need of an urgent procedure. That’s why doctors are concerned. They say every year over 300 patients have to be transferred, resulting in unnecessary costs and delays, to receive care that could easily be provided locally. “Patients have every right to expect these basic surgeries can be taken care of locally,” Dr. Robert Shaw, a spokesperson for the Delta Hospital Medical Staff Association, said back in October when the group went public with its concerns. Only the largest of hospitals, and Delta falls far short in that regard, can be all things to all patients, but when you’re the only hospital in the region that doesn’t have a “functioning surgical program” (Shaw’s words, not mine), then something isn’t right. As MLA Vicki Huntington recently pointed out, every other municipality in B.C. with over 60,000 people has a hospital that provides such services, yet somehow the FHA doesn’t think Delta deserves the same treatment. Doctors here realize the folly of such logic. Let’s hope it doesn’t take long for Fraser Health to come to the same conclusion.
It’s nice to read stories where neighbours aren’t squabbling MIKE SCHNEIDER
COMMUNITY COMMENT There have been a myriad of issues that have proven to be disruptive and divisive for residents in the 25 years that I have lived in Tsawwassen. In some cases, emotions have run so high that unfortunate bouts of public anger have emerged. Neighbours have looked upon each other with disdain and contempt, and emotional statements at public hearings and in letters to this paper have been the norm for the not so sleepy communities of Delta. One recent letter writer has said that he has had enough and will be packing his bags for the greener pastures of Vancouver Island. I am sure there are lots of people who have thought about an option such as this and I am also sure there will be issues in every community that will prove difficult to deal with. This newspaper is obligated to share thoughts within the com-
munity and although balancing arguments can be difficult, the goal for equal representation is always there. At this time of year it is really nice to see that two successive weekly cover stories in the Optimist have told tales of our community coming together instead of drifting apart. One story described the outpouring of support for a family in need, and the other, a fundraiser to support a very worthy Children’s Hospital initiative. I do not know the McConkey family personally but I have been aware of their plight in dealing with their son Kyle’s cancer. As reported in last Friday’s cover story, our community rallied, and quickly, to get the funding needed to get Kyle to Seattle for experimental treatment of the disease later this month. I am sure all of us have been affected by cancer in some way. It is a nasty scourge that will hopefully be beaten one day. Knowing that Kyle and the McConkey family are going to get the chance to continue the fight is about as heartwarming of a story you will ever hear, especially at this time of year. Last Saturday, Save-on-Foods sponsored Dave Lemire’s Climb for Kids. Lemire’s initiative raised over $10,000 for Children’s Hospital

as a part of the Overwaitea Food Group’s overall goal of raising $20 million for pediatric care for special needs kids in B.C. Lemire didn’t have to climb the stairs at Fred Gingell Park for four straight hours, but he did because he loves kids and has a special affinity for children with complicated health issues, including his niece’s young son Noah and his heart condition; his “coach” Myles, who has cerebral palsy; and his late friend Johnny Racich, who succumbed to Apert syndrome a couple of years ago. You could see the pain on Lemire’s face on the last couple of laps but he knew the pain would go away, not often the case for some kids that have to deal with pain and a complicated existence every day. There weren’t very many dry eyes at the park on that beautiful afternoon last weekend as Lemire thanked his inspirations. These stories show that we can unite as a community and that makes me proud. Delta does a good job of showing up when it comes to responding to need all year but these examples are especially comforting at Christmas time. Thank you, Dave, and best wishes to Kyle and the McConkey family!

Business case lacking for second Roberts Bank port
Editor: Did you attend either one of Port Metro Vancouver’s recent small group sessions? If so you will recall that participants questioned the economics and justification for building a second container terminal (T2) on Roberts Bank, even though the meeting topic was environmental mitigation. Participants expressed concern regarding the accuracy of the 2014 Ocean Shipping Consultants container forecast and requested that additional information be made available regarding the justification and need for the project, including a business case and container forecast information from alternate sources. If you thought for a moment that as a result Port Metro Vancouver would set up a separate consulta-
tion session to discuss the economics and justification, think again. PMV is steadfastly refusing; therefore there will be no opportunity to discuss this before it produces its environmental impact assessment. Why do you think this might be? Could it be because the justification for a second terminal is very weak? Could it perhaps be because they are underperforming against their latest forecast, which they have done with every recent forecast that has been produced? Could it be because a good part of their justification relies on moving more and more U.S. containers, which adds no value to the Canadian economy? Or is it that they know T2 — which will be a semiautomated terminal with fewer jobs — will need to
attract business away from other Vancouver area container terminals, information they do not want to put out there? There is no business justification to build T2. PMV’s container growth estimates are likely to top out in the three to four per cent range for the foreseeable future. And at that level of growth, Canada’s west coast ports have sufficient capacity in operation now or planned to come online without ever needing to add a second container terminal at Roberts Bank. If Port Metro Vancouver believes otherwise then it should agree to hold separate consultation sessions so participants can better understand and ask questions dealing with the whole justification for T2. Three thousand. That’s how many children in Delta have special needs. But not all of them are getting the help they need. disgusting. How the Tsawwassen First Nation and governments/agencies outside of our community can undertake such massive projects — housing for 7,000 people over the next 15 years, two mega malls, industrial projects and terminal upgrades — is beyond imagination. These developments are raping our community. They have no place in a small, residential community such as Tsawwassen and the quality of our cherished community will be lost forever. Are local residents too
naïve and unable to see the unimaginable negative impacts to our community of such massive uncontrolled developments? What amazes me is the majority of local residents take this in stride without any rage, demonstrations or protests to tell the authorities that enough is enough. What does it take in Canada for people to stand up and shout out to the government that we will not stand for such abuse of power like people do in other countries around the world? Othmar Brunner
Hydro should display greater regard for trees Editor: On 52nd Street there is a line of Acer red sunset tress that graces the second entrance to Tsawwassen. They are mature, beautiful trees on the east side of 52nd Street from Imperial Hill to Highway 17. They are not close to any power lines because all the existing power lines are on the west side of the street. Sadly, B.C. Hydro decided recently to remove one
of these trees so it could install a pole that could be used as a support for a power pole on the opposite side of the street that needs some help. There is no reason the existing pole could not be repaired or replaced in a less destructive fashion. This cavalier destruction of one of these trees reflects a callous disregard for the appearance of our community.
I am not normally a tree hugger. I know there are times when B.C. Hydro has to protect our power supply with judicious control of trees and vegetation, but this type of insensitive action needs to be curtailed. This tree posed absolutely no danger to power lines. My concern is that B.C. Hydro will now feel free to remove more of the trees for no good reason. Robin Wright
Many need thanking for successful Christmas bazaar Editor: As coordinator of Ladner United Church’s Christmas Village Bazaar, I would like to thank the Delta Optimist for the promotion of the
event; the businesses in the village that contributed to the silent auction; to all who supported by attending and buying; and to the church family who donated
their time and talents to make this a truly special community event in the newly renovated Ladner United Church. Patricia K. Rogers

Developments diminishing quality of life
Editor: I have been a South Delta resident for over 40 years, residing 20 years in Ladner and the other 20 in Tsawwassen. My professional career is in electrical engineering for residential, commercial, institutional and industrial projects. As a result, I am in favour and a proponent of new developments, provided they are carefully planned, energy efficient and local resident friendly. What is happening in Tsawwassen at present is exactly the opposite. It is a disgrace and it is outright

Norris receives Giving Hearts Award Tsawwassen resident honoured by Assn. of Fundraising Professionals Tsawwassen’s Jeff Norris is the recipient of the 2014 Giving Hearts Award for Outstanding Professional Fundraiser. The honour, given by the Vancouver chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals, celebrates an individual who supports philanthropy through their professional work as a seasoned fundraising professional. Norris, president and CEO of the Royal Columbian Hospital Foundation, received the award during a National Philanthropy Day event last month. “We proudly congratulate Jeff on being recognized for his leadership in the charitable sector,” says Royal Columbian Hospital Foundation chair Doug Eveneshen. “Royal Columbian Hospital is poised for significant redevelopment in the coming years, and Jeff’s experience will be instrumental in finding ways for the community to support
this project.” Norris joined the team at Royal Columbian Hospital Foundation in September from Kwantlen Polytechnic University, where he had worked since 2006. Prior to that, Norris spent seven years as director of annual and corporate giving at St. Paul’s Hospital Foundation. He’s also worked for the Heart and Stroke Foundation and the Kidney Foundation. In 2012, he was awarded a Paul Harris Fellow by the Rotary Club of Ladner for his community work. In 2014, Norris was recognized by Business in Vancouver with a “Forty Under 40” Award for his business accomplishment. SUBMITTED PHOTO

New truck licensing system to be introduced at ports
A new system of permitting container trucks to enter port property will soon be introduced. According to a Port Metro Vancouver press release, the changes will achieve a balance between the supply of trucks and the amount of container trucking work available at area ports. They will also ensure drivers are paid fairly and have the opportunity to make a decent living. The new program is a combination of higher participation charges, enhanced truck age requirements aligned with Port Metro Vancouver’s current environmental standards, an expanded provincial audit and oversight framework, improved tracking and measurement of port efficiency, and trucking company sponsorship of owner-operator drivers. Specific details of the reforms have been communicated to trucking stakeholders and it is expected the changes will be finalized along with related provincial regulations in the coming days. The new system is expected to take effect Feb. 1, 2015. Higher participation
charges will be used to fund the new system on a cost recovery basis, to reduce the number of trucking companies from over 150 that currently serve the port, and to ensure drivers are appropriately protected from rampant undercutting that has created widespread driver discontent. Registration and licensing in the new system will be required only for those requiring access to port marine container terminals. Drivers no longer registered to access port marine container terminals will be eligible to participate in a support program to help them transition out of container trucking and are, of course, free to provide driving services elsewhere. Other changes already implemented or planned include extended terminal hours, wait-time payments to drivers, a robust reservation system, the whistleblower Drayage ConfidenceLine and GPS monitoring of all truck movements. The new system is being brought in as a result of a month-long strike by unionized container truckers earlier this year.

Reach Child and Youth Development Society opened a centre for special needs kids in North Delta earlier this fall. Provincial and civic officials were on hand to check out the Deltakids BC Early Years Centre, aimed at improving access and availability of support services for families with special needs children. The centre on 84th Avenue offers drop-in programs and developmental screenings for families, along with literacy programs for young children. Parent workshops are also offered, while families will be introduced to other community resources. A move to an expanded space at the adjacent North Delta Recreation Centre is planned for next June. The centre has been incorporated within Reach’s Play and Learn Centre in front of the recreation centre. The project is a partnership between the Ministry of Children and Family Development, Reach, the Corporation of Delta, the Delta school district, Fraser Health and the Delta Kids Committee.

Children and Family Development Minister Stephanie Cadieux joined Delta North MLA Scott Hamilton, Mayor Lois Jackson and others for the grand opening of Deltakids BC Early Years Centre. Reach was one of 12 community organizations throughout the province chosen to host a BC Early Years Centre. Having reached the halfway mark of its $4 million fundraising goal, Reach also wants to build a new facility at the site of the Kin House in Ladner’s Memorial Park. Delta will provide the land, while the new building will give Reach a much larger place to offer programs. Some of the programs it now offers include occupational, speech and language therapy, communication
enhancement skills, programs to address areas of development weaknesses, as well as programs to help those having difficulty with social or emotional developmental challenges, including autism. Parent and caregiver education is emphasized to enable them to support kids at home and in the community. The society’s current centre on 72nd Street in East Ladner is cramped, antiquated, prone to flooding and in a less than ideal location. The society hopes to move into the new Ladner centre by 2017.

Sounds of Christmas “Comfort, comfort my people, says your God.” (Isaiah 40:1) Can’t you hear the tenor strike those haunting notes as he begins the solo from George Frideric Handel’s Messiah? Off I go in my mind to sing one of my favourite pieces of music. Simply called The Messiah, for many it is the true sound of the coming of Christmas. Since Remembrance Day has past, I have been aware of the growing sound of Christmas songs in elevators and malls, and even on the phone while waiting for someone to pick up. Here comes Santa Claus and Jingle Bells seem to be the most popular tunes, and I am left wonder-
ing what message we are teaching our children when these are the notes that are ringing in their heads. So I had to look, and do you know the third verse of Here comes Santa Claus? It says, “He doesn’t care if you’re rich or poor, He loves you just the same. Santa Claus knows we’re all God’s children that makes everything right. So fill your hearts with Christmas cheer ‘cause Santa Claus comes tonight.” That’s not so bad after all! But I still want to remember that Santa Claus is only the person through whom we can see the spirit of giving. The true gift is being a child of God who loves us so much that “He gave his only Son... born for us.” Now that’s true comfort!

Area’s last remaining video store set to close its doors next month With lease up and viewing habits evolving, end of an era is at hand BY
JESSICA KERR
jkerr@delta-optimist.com
A long-time entertainment staple in Ladner Village will soon be closing up shop. After more than 30 years in business, Videoland will close its doors at the end of January. “We’ve had more support from the community than any video store anywhere that I know of,” said Phil Davie, who has owned the store with wife Michele since 1994. “We really do thank our community for supporting us.” Movie rental stores like Videoland are few and far between these days and many of those left cater to a niche market. Davie said that, as far as he knows,
Ladner Videoland is the last video rental store between south Vancouver and White Rock. The couple closed the Tsawwassen Videoland in May, although both stores outlived local Blockbuster and Rogers Video stores, both of which shut down a few years back. While the business is still there for the time being, Davie said the writing is on the wall and the industry is quickly becoming a thing of the past. “It’s like a way of getting together that’s fading with the higher level of communication,” he said. The entertainment industry, and how and what people access, has evolved over time, he said. Years ago, it was common to see families or groups of
friends get together to head to the video store to peruse the latest releases, or old favourites, and pick out a few flicks to watch together. Today, movies can be downloaded or purchased without leaving the house. Davie said the best years for the DVD and video rental market were 2005 to 2007, but things started going downhill in 2008 when cable companies began offering customers free PVRs. He said there was a hope the introduction of Blu-ray might boost the industry, but that never materialized. In the early 2000s, when people started getting rid of their VCRs they lost the ability to record TV shows. The advent of the PVR brought back, and improved, that ability and,
Davie said, people now more readily turn to their PVRs for their entertainment fix — catching up on missed shows. “The movie watchers have dropped off tremendously,” he said. Davie estimates movie studios alone have lost around $18 billion, and that doesn’t include the quickly dwindling number of video rental stores closing shop. “The industry just evaporated,” he said. With the store’s lease up in January, Davie said it was a logical time to close. The store is still doing rentals until after Christmas, and all video games and movies, except new releases, are also available for purchase. New releases will be available to purchase in January.

ten over three days in September. Mah was among 16 who made the National Honour Roll for his outstanding result on the UFE. Passing the UFE is just one part of receiving a certified accounting designation. Students must also complete rigorous course work and work for
30 months in an approved training office. “On behalf of the ICABC Council and CPABC, I congratulate these students for successfully passing the UFE,” said Dan Little, president of the Institute of Chartered accountants of BC. “We welcome them to the ranks of B.C.’s professional accountants.”

Model train display helps out Food on the Corner BY

Benno Bucher has his festive front yard model train display set up for another holiday season. Bucher has been putting the display together at his Tsawwassen home for over a decade. He says the highlight for him is seeing youngsters come and enjoy it.
“It’s the old story where it’s something to do on a dark December night for the parents to bring their kids. The parents enjoy it, the kids enjoy it, the grandparents enjoy it. Over the years we’ve become somewhat of a destination.” He’s raising money for Food on the Corner, which feeds the homeless in the Downtown Eastside, with his display. Last
year he raised close to $1,000 for the group, he estimates. “Benno is a huge asset to us,” says Food on the Corner president Eric Tegelberg. The display is located at 5875 Vardon Place in Beach Grove. Bucher says Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays are the best time to see the display run, generally from 5 to 8 p.m., weather dependent.

Avoiding Old Man Winter Plenty of activities to keep snowbird couple busy in Hemet, California BY
mere $22. Even higher-end courses, like our favourite, Diamond Valley Golf Club, are dirt cheap. This gorgeous gem, backed by the San Jacinto peaks, sprawls over 450 lush Hemet Valley acres. GVP also offers an organized golf program and by signing up, all guests get a deal on green fees and assurance of tee times. Hiking the Hills: The San Jacinto, Santa Rosa and San Bernardino mountains spring up from Riverside County and are home to countless hiking trails. The well-marked routes through Simpson Park and around Diamond Valley Lake can be done at a leisurely pace. Or bump the exertion up a notch on steeper routes like Whitewater and Ladder Canyons or the pine-canopied trails just beyond the mountain town of Idyllwild. Devil’s Slide is one of these popular pathways that’ll kick your heart rate into overdrive. A weekly group hike is organized through GVP. And if you’d rather stick close to the homestead, the boulder-studded hills behind the resort provide a great workout and valley panoramas. Additional Must-Do’s: For hiking without all the

When Old Man Winter makes his annual appearance, my husband and I snowbird south to Hemet, California and The Golden Village Palms (GVP) RV park becomes our home away from home. Although there are more than enough summer-camp-type activities to keep us content, this year we ventured outside this lush playground and discovered there’s even more just beyond our RV door. To Market: Tasty produce and pastries line up next to beaded jewellery and souvenirs. Outdoor markets are big in this region and the prices are downright cheap. On Saturdays, check out the artisans and farmers who congregate in downtown Hemet, then head southeast to Winchester Flea Market where you’ll find everything from flowering trees to tweeting cockatiels. If you’re into driving a little further, veer into Old Town Temecula. Or do an about face to the College of the Desert (Palm Desert). With over 300 vendors, you’re bound to find that one-of-a-kind treasure. And when it comes to

markets, there’s nothing quite like the Palm Springs Villagefest. Every Thursday night, the swanky Palm Canyon Drive transforms into a happening heyday. Veggies, flowers and gems unite with snacks, sweets and socializing. It’s a huge crowd-pleaser. If you don’t want to stray
very far from GVP, no worries. A farmer’s market comes every Tuesday, so goodness is guaranteed for your entire stay. Glorious Golf: There are lots of courses within a short drive and most are one-third the price that we pay here in Canada. Echo Hills, a recently-
reconstructed nine-hole par 3 charges less than $10 a round. On Thursdays, Golden Era rolls out the verdant carpet – $30/couple gets GVP guests circling its regulation-length nine holes in a cart. Seven Hills is another steal. In the afternoons, its 18-hole, par 72 is a

You’ll be whisked to the 8,500-foot ridge top in just 10 minutes where there’s a network of trails ranging from casual rambles to challenging ascents. And before making the descent, re-fuel at either the casual Pines Café or savvy Peaks Restaurant where delicious options are accompanied by Coachella Valley vistas. If staying grounded is more your thing, Desert Adventures provides the thrill without the uphill. Take a jeep ride through narrow canyons or an echo tour into Joshua National Park. You want more history? Estudillo Mansion, a stately brick residence built in 1884, zeros in on San Jacinto Valley’s more recent happenings and Hemet’s state-of-the-art Western Science Centre goes right back to the area’s ice age roots when giant mammoths roamed these lands. Filming is finished for Last Night in Suburbia and now the team behind the homegrown film is looking to raise funds for the next step. An Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign was launched Monday and runs until Jan. 1. Ladner’s Richard Cox, the writer and director of the movie, explains the aim is to raise money for postproduction work, including an animated opening sequence, and to help get the film into film festivals. The target is $50,000. In return for helping fund the project, contributors can select various perks. “We think we’ve come up with some cool stuff,” says Cox. Examples include a digital download of the film,

a custom T-shirt, a signed poster, a Skype call with members of the team and even credit as an associate or executive producer. Filmed in Ladner and Tsawwassen, the movie follows seven friends on their last night together before leaving for college.
“It was a great experience to work locally,” says Cox, adding Delta was very accommodating as were so many local people. Visit the film’s crowdfunding campaign page at https://www.indiegogo. com/projects/last-night-insuburbia--2.

A Good Noise Christmas BY
DAVE WILLIS
dwillis@delta-optimist.com
Al Mitschke’s favourite concerts of the year are coming up. The Ladner resident is a member of the Good Noise Vancouver Gospel Choir, a 90-voice group that will present three holiday performances next week featuring guest artist Daniel Lapp on fiddle and trumpet. “The Christmas concerts are my favourite concerts of the year. It’s a wonderful season,” says Mitschke. A member of the group for about a decade, he describes gospel as fun, energetic and uplifting music. You come out of a Good Noise concert just ready for Christmas, he says, adding the music puts you in a wonderful frame of mind. Mitschke, who has sang everything from formal classical with honour choirs to barbershop and vocal jazz, left music for about 20 years because of other obligations. He says he always
had a desire to get back in. He saw the Good Noise Vancouver Gospel Choir perform at a benefit concert not long after the group formed. “I went out and saw them and was just blown away,” he says. Carol ships will be on the river tonight and tomorrow night.
Carol ships set sail for harbour tonight The carol ships are set to sail into Ladner Harbour tonight in the first of two colourful processions. The Ladner Gospel Assembly will actually kick things off tonight with a Christmas carol sing-a-long at the tree at the corner of 48th Avenue and Delta Street before proceeding on a hay wagon to the harbour to welcome the carol ships. The caroling starts at 7 p.m. and will run for about half an hour before the choir makes its way to the wharf, where it will continue singing festive favourites as the boats come in. They’re expected to arrive around 7:45 p.m. The carol ships will put on a repeat performance tomorrow, arriving at the wharf at the foot of Elliott Street at about 7:15 p.m. The procession will make
its way along the river to the harbour starting from the Westham Island Bridge. • Another holiday tradition, the Ladner Business Association’s annual Breakfast with Santa, is set for tomorrow morning at the Ladner Community Centre. A staple of the Christmas season for more than 30 years, the event usually draws about 600 people for pancakes and festive fun. It will run from 8 to 11 a.m. Santa and Mrs. Claus are scheduled to arrive in a police cruiser at 8:30 a.m., at which time they will take to the stage to pose for photos and visit with children. Breakfast costs $5 for pancakes and $7 for pancakes with ham. Breakfast also includes a choice of juice or coffee.

Bantam Rams provincial champs South Delta completes perfect 12-0-0 campaign with 23-0 win over Langley Mustangs in title game BY

Watch out again for the South Delta Sun Devils in 2016. As the Tsawwassen high school prepares to play for the provincial AAA championship tomorrow night, it’s no coincidence the core of that team won a B.C. Bantam community title in 2012. Now, the Dennison Park “football factory” has produced another outstanding group that has just concluded a flawless run. The South Delta Bantam Rams capped a perfect season with a 23-0 victory over the Langley Mustangs in last Satuday’s B.C. Community Football Association’s provincial championship game. The Rams went went 10-0-0 in Vancouver Mainland Football League regular season play, then produced two more post-season wins. Along the way, they outscored their opponents by a whopping 362-67 margin, posting a pair of shutouts in the playoffs. If that’s not impressive enough, South Delta’s 29 player roster, featured 19 first-year Bantam eligible players, including 18 that played on the 2013 B.C. champion Junior Bantam team. With only 10 players slated to move onto the high school ranks next season, the Rams are already heavy favourites to repeat. “With each division in minor football being two year intervals, this was the last time this group would play together,” said Rams head coach Brent Calvert. “This was our goal back at the start of the season and it’s great to see the boys put it altogether and be so consistent week after week

South Delta Rams completed a perfect season with a 23-0 win over the Langley Mustangs last Saturday at McLeod Stadium. despite being such a young team.” The Rams certainly had their challenges along the way including an unprecedented number of secondyear players seeing double duty with the Sun Devils. There were five in total, including SDSS starters Grant McDonald and David Edwards. When the Rams learned their provincial final was the same day as the Sun Devils playoff game with Terry Fox, they pleaded with BCCFA officials for an earlier start time. The game was moved up three hours and Ram coaches even limited the amount of playing time for the Sun Devil players. The locals also had to deal with a Langley team they were facing for the third time in four weeks and enjoyed home field advantage thanks to its association hosting all the division
finals. An arctic blast resulted in a snow covered turf field at McLeod Stadium and sub zero temperatures. The Rams relied on their outstanding defence and some explosive plays to complete their season of perfection. They opened the scoring late in the second quarter on a safety, then made it 9-0 two plays later when quarterback Michael Calvert took off on a designed pass play and was in the end zone 72 yards later. An excellent kick return put the Mustangs in scoring range but South Delta’s defence held firm at its 18-yard-line. On the next play, Stefanos Goulas took advantage of some key blocking to rumble for a 92-yard major with just 47 seconds left in the half to make it 16-0. Langley’s last gasp to get back in the game ended at the Rams’ six-yard-line
early in the fourth quarter on a fumble recovery by Maxwell Stalling, thanks to a big tackle from defensive end Jarvis Dashkewytch. Some more solid running by Goulas set the stage for Calvert to secure playerof-the-game honours with an 86-yard touchdown run. Eduardo Gonzalez added his third convert of the game. Goulas completed his brilliant afternoon with an interception in the final minute of play. Rams tight end/linebacker Ryan Jensen was named the most sportsmanlike player of the game. The Rams roster features: #2 Jaxon Russell, #9 Grant McDonald, #10 Noah Brown, #11 Jacob Kirk, #12 Michael Calvert, #15 Cooper Jones, #17 Douglas Jameson, #20 Billy Matwichyna, #27 Stefanos Goulas, #33 Andrew Kraft, #44 Nico Oulette, #50 Dylan Samson, #51
Jarvis Dashkewytch, #55 Ethan Prasad, #56 Justin Smith, #60 Dimitri Goulas, #62 Mark Soriano, #63 Morgan Brumby, #64 Petro Chountalos, #67 David Edwards, #68 Garrett Smith, #72 Johnathan Sutherland, #75 Jacob MacIver, #81 Ryan Jensen, #82 Rylan Tjahyana, #84 Maxwell Stalling, #86 Eduardo Gonzalez, #92 Aneel Nijjar, #96 Kai Kennedy. The coaching and support staff includes: Brent Calvert (head coach/offensive coordinator), Dan Matwichyna (assistant head coach/defensive coordinator), Raj Prasad (line coach), Jeff Stalling (special teams coach), Matt Kraft (receiver/defensive backs coach), Peter Dashkewytch (video coach), Ryan von Edne (student coach), Chris Goulas (student coach), Tom Kennedy (trainer), Terri Calvert and Kay Goulas (managers).

2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014.
On August 14, 2014, we asked for the Fraser Elliot group to come to our home and not only give us a free evaluation of the value but more importantly to us was what they would do to increase exposure and traffic through it. Previously we had our home on the market with a different realtor for 5 months and in the last 2 months it had only been shown once per month and we felt this was not adequate. After hearing of the many forms of advertising and exposure to the market, how they would pay a stager to meet with us and tell us the best way to use existing furniture and space to make the home more appealing we were impressed and then discussed pictures and virtual tours. The pictures and virtual tour were amazing and obviously done by a professional. After seeing them on line both my wife and I jokingly agreed if we did not already own the home, we would buy it.We signed a listing agreement that same day.Since that time we have had 11 showings, and 2 offers to purchase. The first one on August 27 and the one that has resulted in the sale of our home on September 22, 2014.Immediately after each and every showing we received a follow up call from which ever member of the team showed the home with information on how the showing went, this was much appreciated and did not leave us in the dark wondering about feedback.Any phone calls we made to the team were either answered in person or returned within 5 minutes. The home they sold for us was a single family dwelling and we still own a condo that without a doubt will be listed by the Fraser Elliot Group should they want it at the time. The service was unbelievable, professional and we would recommend the Fraser Elliot Group to anyone wanting to buy or sell a home. - Ken and Jocelyn Pike
We had excellent service from the Fraser Elliott team with our recent house sale. We would particularly like to recognize the expertise and advice provided by the team as well as the effective advertising. Thank you! - John Higenbottam Thanks for all of the showings and work you did to sell the place. We won't hesitate to recommend you to our friends and family. - Mike Carston & Leslie Valair
We wanted to thank you for all your efforts in selling our home here in Ladner. There were a number of points that really stood out for us through the whole process. · Team work ? there was a real sense of team work among all the staff at Fraser Elliott Remax. We felt everyone was working toward the common goal of selling our house in an effective manner and for the desired price. · Communication ? throughout the sales process there was clear and consistent communication provided to us including interest in the house, potential opportunities, and the current state of the Ladner housing market. This was critical in establishing and maintaining trust throughout the sales process. · Relevant advise ? there were a many times where advice was offered but it was done in a manner whereby the reasons for the advice were clearly articulated, but the final decisions were very much left to ourselves to make without any pressure. This was very beneficial and really helped us feel Fraser Elliott Remax had our best interests at heart. · Marketing strategy ? we really appreciated your use of leading edge strategies to market our home, particular your use of social media. We really felt our home was being exposed to many potential buyers that perhaps traditional marketing methods would never have reached. It also showed the commitment of Fraser Elliot Remax to invest money in marketing our house. In summary, we really enjoyed our experience working with Fraser Elliott Remax and would have no hesitation in recommending the company to anyone interested in buying or selling a home. As you know, we have now asked you to be our realtors as we look for our new home so we must be satisfied! Sincerely, - Graeme and Veronique Byrne
When we made the discussion to sell our home we had a number of real estate agents in mind, we decided to start with Fraser Elliott to do an evaluation on our home and discuss the marketing process, on completion of the discussion we determined there was no need to discuss our home sale with other real estate agents. The home preparation and marketing was above and beyond our expectations, throughout the listing and showing process they were always in communication with us. The Fraser Elliott Real Estate Group are truly professionals when it comes to real estate business and are No. 1 for good reason. Would not hesitate to call upon their services in the future and highly recommend them to anyone looking to sell of purchase real estate.!
To all the staff at Fraser Elliott Group, The one word that seems to exemplify your company is enthusiasm, from Fraser’s first look at our property to each of the staff that had anything to do with the sale, each of you showed such enthusiasm and gave us such support, you have no idea who much that had been lacking from previous efforts.Another word is professionalism, every detail was handled with such a competence and professionalism, the staging advice, the incredible photography even the impressive wording on the listing all first class and obviously very effective. But the final proof of Fraser Elliott’s excellent service came with the sale of our property in under 30 days from our first meeting. That in itself, speaks more eloquently than any other praise we might offer. And we do offer that praise, and, recommendation to anyone who is looking for enthusiastic, professional and excellent service in their real estate company. Look no farther than Fraser Elliott! With our thanks, - Alex and Cindy Adamson
It used to be that to sell a house you engaged a Realtor to provide an MLS listing and hope for a sale. Fraser Elliott with his team at the Fraser Elliott Group have completely changed the role of the Realtor in South Delta. From the first meeting to discuss a potential listing through to the removal of subjects you knew someone was in control and driving the sale, at no time did we feel we were in a wait and see what happens relationship. Whether you are looking to sell your home or buy a new home, we would strongly recommend the Fraser Elliott Group. - Steve and Julie Knight We are so happy with the job that the Fraser Elliot team did for us. They helped us with selling our current home and finding our new home. Jennifer and Garrett have tons of experience and are extremely professional agents. We liked the extras that came with Fraser Elliot. The team approach meant we never needed to wait to talk to someone if we had a question. The free consultation with an interior designer/stager was a nice touch. Our house sold in no time and we found our dream home! - Leeann K. and Brian T.
I couldn't be happier with the Fraser Elliot Team!!! They really give you and experience when selling your home. From the photography, the stager, the realtors who all work together. They honestly give you the best of the best. The Fraser Elliot team work hard for you and are so professional and just as important ... personable. They came recommended to me,and I would only recommended them to anyone looking to sell or buy! I honestly don't think the outcome for my sell would have been the same with anyone else! Thank you Garrett, Amber, Fraser, Julie and everyone else on the team! - Adrienne Fahr It was a pleasure working with you on the sale of our house. My uncle was thrilled that the sale went through so quickly, and for full asking price! We’ve already recommended your services to others. - John Fotheringham
The Fraser Elliott Team, l'd like to take this opportunity to extend my gratitude to you and your entire staff on what l consider to be an outstanding job on the sale of my condo. From our first meeting you told me that you would treat the sale of my condo the same way you would handle selling a $3 million home. You and your team stood by your word and did exactly that. I couldn't be happier! With the extremely tight window time you and your team was working with you made it all fit together. An outstanding performance by you all and my thanks and gratitude for all your hard work. I feel privileged to have met and worked together with such a congenial group as yourselves and will pass my positive recommendations on the appropriate people. Thanks again for the outstanding effort you all put in for me. Sincerely, - Dave Ennis

Here are just some of our many testimonials we've received from our recent clients. Over the past few months I have had the pleasure of dealing with the Fraser Elliott Group. My mother's condo had been on the market for 18 months with two separate realtors. We had taken the suggestions of the last realtor and had the place completely painted with a neutral pallet but alas, it sat empty for the next few months with only a couple of showings. I had hesitated in calling Fraser Elliott Group because in all honesty, they had so many listings and I didn't think they would pay much attention to mom's condo. I finally made the decision to call them and was pleasantly surprised. Their professionalism, track record and assurance that mom's condo was just as important as any listing they had as well as their explanation of their unique marketing strategies made me choose them with confidence. Inside of a week we accepted an offer on the condo, fairly close to list price (which was the same price as the previous realtor had listed it). Unfortunately before subjects were removed, the deal fell through however, Fraser Elliott Group had another offer quickly and the condo sold close to list price. The condo was basically sold in just over a month with this group in a market where condo sales were fairly flat. Shortly after that, we decided to sell our family home. There was a lot of sentiment involved in the decision as it is the home my father built. in 1968 with pride and love. We bought the home from my mom 15 years ago after my dad passed away and happily raised our children there. When Fraser and Garrett came to see us I expressed that I did not want to sell to someone who was going to tear it down and it was important that the people who buy the house loves it as much as we have. They didn't make me feel silly, in fact I believe they empathized with how I must be feeling. The interest was overwhelming once listed. The drive by's and showings were numerous and the house sold within 6 days to the perfect young couple who look at the home as theirs for the next 40 years. Presently my daughter is using Fraser Elliott Groups buyers agent Jennifer to help her find an apartment. She has been wonderful and patient with our daughter who is a first time buyer. I've been involved all the way on the side lines and Jennifer could have easily deferred to me a number of times, but is dealing directly with our daughter teaching and walking her through this monumental step in her life. Fraser Elliott's team has been so professional, patient and understanding. They've explained who they are, how they market and walked us through every stage giving us sound advice every step of the way. They provided a consult with a stager for hints to make the house look better for pictures and showings; there was plenty of notice given for showings; the photographer was professional and quick with an awesome results; the person that came in to take accurate measurements of house and property was efficient and fast. Its no wonder the Fraser Elliott Group is #3 in the world. The team is so professional and so on the ball. They take all of your comments and concerns to heart , offer sound, fair advice and definitely do the best for their client. I highly recommend their services. In my opinion and having dealt with a number of realtors recently, they are the best out there.
- Janelle Clegg
Our home had een on the market for two years with little success when we resolved to contact Fraser Elliot and his group in order to market the property. What attracted us initially and what we wanted to take advantage of, was Fraser's high profile and his extensive and comprehensive marketing plan. What we didn’t expect was was the quality of the professionals in his group that handled all aspects of marketing and sale. The service they delivered was thorough, timely and effective. Above all, the service felt personal. Our home was SOLD within two months of listing at a price point we were very comfortable with. Perfect! - Peter Woeste
This is how efficient the Fraser Elliott team is… some kids took our for sale sign as a prank and put down the street. Fraser’s team had it back in its spot before we even knew it was gone! This is the second time we have used Fraser Elliott to sell our home and we cannot say enough about how professional and efficient he and his team are!! From our first meeting where Fraser and Garrett spent three hours discussing the upcoming sale to having the sold sign on two weeks later… they are awesome!! The first time we used Fraser to sell our home it was done in a day!!! Now as we look to buy another home we are working with one of his team again!! We would recommend him to our friends and family in a minute!! Thanks so much to all of you for your hard working in getting the job done!! - Sandra and Philippe
Our experience working with the Fraser Elliott group on the sale of our home, was great. We really liked the team approach that they provided. Always someone at the office to answer your email or show your house. The showings were by appointment rather than open house which we really liked. We also really appreciated Kash (a stager) that they provided free of charge, to help us get the home ready for photos and staging. I’m not sure we would have thought of that ourselves and it really helped. We had extra furniture to move and the free loaner moving truck provided came in handy when moving it to a storage unit. The team of Garrett, Amber and Rachel who primarily showed our home were all great to deal with, friendly and personable, and the feedback they gave us after viewings, kept us positive. There were weekly updates and it really felt that the team was doing everything they could, to ensure our house got the exposure needed and the right buyer was found. Thank you to every member of the Fraser Elliott Group!! - Rosalind Cleroux
Fraser’s team are experts in their field. I was blown away by their level of communication with me, I couldn’t believe they were at every showing and giving me feedback on how it went. I could tell right away that Fraser heavily invests in selling your product, from advertising material, videos, photography, facebook, newspapers, web presence and he even sent a complimentary stager to re-arrange my home to maximise our selling potential. I don’t know why you wouldn’t use Fraser Elliott to sell your home. - Ian
I am beyond thrilled and relieved. Thank you and your team for all the hard work and effort you put into the selling of my home and the purchase of the condo. You are the best!! - Brenda Swinglehurst Thank you so very much for all your hard dedicated work in selling my mom’s house. We appreciate SO much everything you did and how hard you worked to sell the house...we will HIGHLY recommend you in the future!! - Diane DeMille and family
From past real estate experience we firmly believe that dealing with a high profile realtor who is supported by a team of experts is the way to sell a home. Hence, when we decided to sell our Ladner home a call to Fraser Elliott was the logical first move. Our experience with Fraser and his group exceeded all our expectations. Firstly, the marketing done by Fraser Elliott is targeted to a larger and better defined audience than that of other local realtors .The professionalism and communication skill of the entire group is exceptional Our main contact was Garrett Chu who kept us constantly informed of any new developments. The team approach, with back-up in the office made all aspects of the sale seamless. We would not hesitate to recommend Fraser Elliott to our friends and acquaintances. - John and Shirley Jaye
Working with Fraser, and his amazing team, has been an all around great experience from day one. We had listed our house previously with a different agent and were not excited about the process of trying to sell our home again. We took their advice on pricing and any little changes we could do to make our home look its very best, and we were thrilled to accept a great offer within a few days, before it even hit MLS! We could not be happier with our decision to go with Fraser and his team and would highly recommend them to anyone buying or selling in the South Delta area. Thanks! - Ash and Laura Thomas
