Concerns raised by surgeons at another Fraser Health hospital highlight problems already all too clear in Delta, says MLA Vicki Huntington. The Delta South independent talked Wednesday about an open letter to the health authority from surgeons at Burnaby Hospital, saying it demonstrates a level of dysfunction in Fraser Health. “We have a situation where people are not being equitably served by Fraser Health,” said Huntington, pointing to similar concerns recently raised by Delta Hospital doctors. “When two different groups of physicians are imploring the same health authority to provide equitable funding to their hospital, it’s a pretty
clear signal that change needs to happen.” This week, 18 Burnaby Hospital surgeons signed a letter to Dr. Peter Blair, the FHA’s medical director of surgery, stating say they have “lost confidence with the management of FHA surgical services” and believe the hospital and its patients would be better served under a different health authority. “This dispute mirrors what we’ve seen in Delta,” said Huntington. “The operating facilities are there, but we’re lacking the resources to use them effectively.” This fall, the Delta Hospital Medical Staff Association made public a myriad of problems patients face if they come for urgent surgical procedures, ones they wouldn’t have if they went to any other hospital in the region.

By then my appendix decided to rupture and my surgeon said it was nasty.” Nicholas Wong of Friends of Delta Hospital said the group would continue to advocate for more funding and the restoration of the surgical program. “In an overtaxed system, it’s criminal we’re not utilizing the facilities that we have at Delta Hospital,” he said.
Alexa’s Bus can be found at roadblocks Police station on wheels allows officers to conduct impaired driving investigations at scene With the holiday season now in full swing, Delta police are once again urging people to find a safe ride home if their festivities involve drinking alcohol. This year’s CounterAttack campaign launched last week with officers around the province setting up roadblocks to keep impaired drivers off the roads. Drivers that show signs of impairment will be subject to further investigation and possibly have their vehicles impounded and/or face criminal charges. Alexa’s Bus, a police station on wheels, was also roadside over the weekend in Delta. In honour of Alexa Middelaer, a four-year-old Ladner girl who was killed

investigations at the scene of a roadblock. The Middelaers chal-
lenged police and the province to reduce the number of deaths in B.C. caused by
impaired driving following the tragedy in East Ladner more than six years ago. That challenge resulted in the introduction of the Immediate Roadside Prohibition program in 2010, which has helped reduce the number of alcohol-related fatalities by 54 per cent. At a roadblock last Saturday, Delta police checked about 500 drivers, issuing three roadside suspensions and seven violation tickets as well as making one drug seizure. Delta police are reminding drivers that if you have been drinking this holiday season, make sure you plan ahead for a safe ride home, whether that’s a designated driver, taxi or using Operation Red Nose.

The purpose of the Crime Beat is to educate and inform the public about some of the property crime trends occurring in South Delta and other files of interest. If you see anything occurring that you believe to be suspicious, call 911 for in-progress crimes and emergencies or 604-9464411 for other assistance. The following are some of the calls the Delta police responded to in the previous week: Tsawwassen • Dec. 8, 10:21 a.m., 1000-block of Pacific Drive: A CoPS CASA volunteer located an unlocked door in a residence. Police set up a containment of the area, cleared the residence, confirmed no one was inside and ensured the house was completely secure. If you are going to be absent from your home for a period of time, a request can be made through the CASA program for volunteers to conduct security checks of your residence. For further information contact your community police station. • Dec. 8, 12:38 a.m., 1300-block of 56th Street: Complainant contacted police as she wished to dispute a ticket she had received for a municipal bylaw violation but was informed the municipality did not issue the ticket. The complainant was informed the ticket was issued by the police department and if she wished to dispute the ticket, the required information is available on the back of the ticket. • Dec. 8, 4:49 p.m., 53A Street and 12th Avenue: A driver reported she was turning left onto 53A Street when she struck a pedestrian. The driver indicated she was traveling very slowly, it was dark and rainy, and

Ladner • Dec. 9, 7 p.m., 48th Avenue: Complainant reported that his wallet was stolen from his office. An employee in the office believes she saw an unknown male enter through the back door of the business but did not see him leave the premises. The male is described as 6’ 2” tall, blonde hair, and wearing a green sweater. The wallet contains several bank cards and cash. Complainant advised to cancel cards and information was added to the police data computer system. • Dec. 9, 10:03 p.m., Ladner Trunk Road and Highway 17A: Police stopped a vehicle that proceeded through a yellow light as it turned red. The driver had a strong smell of alcohol on his breath and admitted he was returning from the bar. Two breath samples provided by the driver read “Warn” and as a result he was given a three-
day roadside suspension, his driver’s licence seized and the vehicle impounded. The driver was given a vehicle ticket and he left the area by taxi. • Dec. 10, 2:34 a.m., Evergreen Lane: Report received that a suspicious male was continuously knocking on the door of one of the units. Police located the male who has no fixed address and was attempting to get into the home of his mother. Police offered to give the male a ride to a shelter but the offer was declined. The male indicated he would leave the area and find a dry place to sleep. • Dec. 11, 9:54 a.m., 4700-block of 54th Street: A resident reported the theft of his decorative artificial Christmas tree from his front lawn sometime overnight. The tree is described as white, five feet tall with flashing lights. • Dec. 11, 6:01 p.m., 5000-block of 47A Avenue: Complainant reported an unknown person had entered the business, accessed an unlocked rear inner office and stolen envelopes containing a significant amount of cash and an expensive watch. Police advised the complainant to improve office security by relocating the reception desk to allow a view of persons entering the business at all points and installing chimes on the door. File provided for insurance purposes. • Dec. 11, 11:10 p.m., 6500-block of Holly Park Drive: Police responded to a report of a barking dog in the complainant’s backyard. A tan-coloured English bulldog was located and transported to the Delta Community Animal Shelter, which will attempt to locate the owner.

Civic plan in works to improve Delta Street
Delta council awards contract for project’s design BY

Delta council is looking to make improvements to one of Ladner Village’s main drags. Civic politicians approved awarding a $136,000 contract Monday evening in an effort to upgrade Delta Street, although streetscape work isn’t likely to begin for some time.
“There are a number of concerns with regard to the condition of Delta Street,” said engineering director Steven Lan, noting sidewalks have been damaged by tree roots and a lack of drainage. The project will encompass the stretch between 48th Avenue and Chisholm Street. Lan said improvements would include: narrowing the roadway to provide
wider sidewalks; the removal and replacement of all existing trees along the boulevard and the installation of new tree cell technology under the new sidewalk; a decorative raised pedestrian plaza at the intersection of Delta and Bridge streets; and new bike racks, benches, garbage cans and street lights. “The new lighting would be more reflective of the heritage feel (of the vil-

MURPHY’S LAW I got my survey in the mail the other day and found it heartwarming that a big, impersonal entity like Canada Post wondered what I, otherwise known as Mail Recipient, thought of the pending switch to community mailboxes in Ladner. OK, so I really wasn’t that touched by what’s little more than a public relations exercise, but on the bright side, at least I wasn’t disappointed. The first of 14 questions in the survey informs us that 10 million Canadian homes already receive their mail through some form of centralized delivery. If that’s the case, then shouldn’t Canada Post already have a pretty darn good idea of what works, and what doesn’t, when it comes to community mailboxes? Do they really require our input? Whether they need it, or will ultimately heed it, is certainly up for debate, but that hasn’t stopped Canada Post from asking our opinions on a host of issues — everything from security and accessibility to personal safety and maintenance — associated with community boxes. Maybe it’s just me, but I would hope the postal service would ensure all these points are addressed to the greatest extent possible at every single community mailbox. We shouldn’t have to tell Canada Post to make each installation safe, accessible and secure; those types of issues should be on some sort of checklist for every site. It seems to me the only real question left at this point is where to put the community boxes in each neighbourhood and I suspect the answer to that one will have more to do with the availability of suitable locations than resident input. Although the survey asks whether people would prefer smaller boxes closer to their homes or larger ones in central locations, the information we got from a spokesperson is that Canada Post would be working with the Corporation of Delta to find suitable public sites when rolling out community boxes in Ladner next year. If the postal service isn’t going to lease slices of private property to house the smaller boxes, then it’s a good bet we’ll be getting larger boxes in central sites, meaning the location questions on the survey could well be moot too. What we do know is that community mailboxes have been in use for the last 30 years and that millions of Canadian households have come to rely on them. In other words, Canada Post already knows the best ways to implement the service, but if you don’t like what eventually unfolds in Ladner, remember, you can’t say you weren’t consulted.

COMMUNITY COMMENT As we prepare to slow down a bit over Christmas — unless you are employed by an organization that is going flat out — it’s time to reflect on what’s good in our world. Yes, we have challenges and always will, but how are we doing? Benchmarks might be Charles Dickens’ Christmas Carol, recent pictures of Ebola victims, pictures of parents of kidnapped girls in Africa, or even displaced families in UN tents on the Turkey-Syria border. Yes, there are literally millions of displaced and worried people all over the earth and the appeals for food are barely keeping up with the need. We are much better off — for sure. Editor: Re: T2 is required to handle growing Canadian trade, letter to the editor, Dec. 12 Cliff Stewart’s rebuttal of Roger Emsley’s contention that there’s no justification for the Terminal 2 expansion at Roberts Bank again gives us no facts or figures. To date we have seen very little documentation to support the Port Metro Vancouver business case and forecast to justify this massive project. If you run the numbers and analyze the Ocean Shipping Consultant forecast document, you can see the business case is a maze of information and statistical analysis. A lot of this documentation seems to be irrelevant.
The focus of the forecast should be on current and future GDP growth projections for Canada over the next 20 years. Canada’s average GDP growth rate for the past five years is about 2.5 per cent. The forecasted GDP growth rate for Canada has been downgraded from 2.5 to two per cent for 2015. Therefore one might think that Port Metro Vancouver would use a 2.5 per cent compounded growth rate for future container growth requirements. Unfortunately, this is not the case as it has chosen an annual compounded growth rate of between six and seven per cent. This is absurd as I have yet to hear of any economist or consultant forecasting these kind
of numbers for growth in the Canadian economy. Yes, there are other factors to be considered, like larger container ships and larger container configurations. However, these logistical changes can be easily handled within the existing footprint, but might also include loading dock modification and use of TFN land for increased infrastructure, rail and storage facilities. It is time for Port Metro Vancouver to stop the spin and give us the facts. It obviously won’t comply as everyone will then see there is no justification for T2. However, if you want to see an accurate forecast and documentation, visit www. againstportexpansion.org. Don Paulsen

T2 considered in third berth approval Editor: Re: Public can’t rely on feds for proper assessment, letter to the editor, Dec. 3 Comments made in Wilma Haig’s letter require clarification and correction. Haig wrote that Port Metro Vancouver stated the South Fraser Perimeter Road wouldn’t be needed unless the proposed Roberts Bank Terminal 2 project was approved. Port Metro Vancouver has long championed transportation infrastructure projects that ease congestion on Lower Mainland roads and speed
up the movement of goods through the Canada’s AsiaPacific Gateway, regardless of the Roberts Bank Terminal 2 project proceeding. Furthermore, we publicly stated in 2005 that the viability of Terminal 2 depends on improvements to the road and rail network that support Canada’s largest port, South Fraser Perimeter Road included. Haig also wrote that Port Metro Vancouver “removed any mention” of the proposed Roberts Bank Terminal 2 project from the environmental assess-
ment application for the Deltaport third berth project, which was completed in 2010. In actual fact, the Terminal 2 project and South Fraser Perimeter Road were both considered within the cumulative effects assessment for that project as early as 2005. I would be happy to direct Haig to the specific pages on our website where she can find the information above. Cliff Stewart, P.Eng Vice President, Infrastructure Port Metro Vancouver

EMERGENCY DROP OFF DEPOT FOR THE SOUTH DELTA FOOD BANK
Recycler’s kindness puts smile on young boy’s face Editor: On a typical Monday morning after walking his sisters to school, two-anda-half-year-old Oliver likes to stand at our gate and wait for his favourite Monday morning excitement — the recycling man. He waits with anticipation while the truck comes down our street. Our recycling man is the best as
he always has a smile, a thumbs up, a toot of his horn and a special hello for Oliver. However, the last two Mondays he has come later in the day and we haven’t hung out waiting for the truck. But lo and behold, the true spirit of Christmas got dropped off at our house yesterday. Our super awesome recy-
cling guy left a wrapped present in our recycling bin for Oliver. He was sooooooo excited by the recycling truck that was left for him and I was amazed at the gesture. It really brought out the spirit of Christmas for us and we will be forever grateful to our amazing recycler. Alyson Brennan
Mountain View staff thanked for great Christmas dinner Editor: In this time of the hustle and bustle of Christmas, once again the entire staff of Mountain View Manor took the time to put on a most excellent Christmas dinner for the residents and their families. It is no small feat preparing a turkey dinner for
almost 300 people, all to be served at noon. It is heartwarming to see the staff take the extra time to ensure a festive party for all, especially those so ill they cannot enjoy Christmas at home. My mother is a resident of Mountain View and she has received excellent care
over the years, dealing with a long-term debilitating disease that has robbed her of health and mind. I would like to wish all the staff and management a very Merry Christmas, a heartfelt thank you for all the kind service provided and a Happy New Year. Malcolm Johnston

MLA’S REPORT
Returning home on the ferry last week, I was greeted with a lovely view of our western shore. The water was sparkling, the air was clear and I could see families walking along the beach. It was a beautiful day, and I felt a deep sense of gratitude that I am lucky enough to call this place my home. South Delta is unique. Although we are quite close to the big city, we are the stewards of unrivalled agricultural lands and we protect one of the most
vital ecosystems in North America. At the same time, our compact residential cores ensure that “community” remains a meaningful word. We recognize neighbours as we shop; we smile at strangers we pass on the streets; we know our shopkeepers by name; we actually see the work of our community organizations; we play on our own beaches and walk along our own river. How lucky we are. When I walk through Tsawwassen or Ladner, I am constantly reminded that this community is not about the hustle and bustle of downtown, large-scale development or urban sprawl. We have chosen a different path. We believe in quiet and comfortable neighbourhoods, where our efforts to contribute are recognized and appreciated, and where our history is valued and preserved. Listen to the names of some of our neighbours who make our home what it is. The Delta Agricultural Society, the Delta Hospital Auxiliary, the Legion, the Delta Community Living Society, our Rotary and Kiwanis and Lions and Odd Fellows and TOOBs, our arts council, firefighters, pipe band, business associations and chamber of commerce, our churches and institutions of faith. We build our community.
From gymnastic facilities to skateboard parks, from playgrounds to nature trails to outdoor seniors’ exercise centres, we invest in our home to make it a place that is welcoming for all. We visit Earthwise, we listen to the Music Makers, the youth orchestra and the jazz band. We light Christmas trees and participate in Sun Fest. In this community, we support each other. We are also a passionate community that works hard to preserve our quality of life and we are not afraid to stand up for our values. Together, we have banded together to protect our farmland, our wildlife and our ecosystems. We have fought for our hospital, our waterways and the needs of our residents. I am proud and honoured to live in a community that cares about protecting what we have, and keeping it this way for future generations. During the Christmas season, I am always reminded that I am blessed to live in such a beautiful environment and in such a caring community. And I am thankful. My staff, our wonderful volunteers and I wish you all a Merry Christmas and most Happy New Year. And for those of you who do not worship at this time of year, may you enjoy the peace of the season and be in awe of this place we call home.

Manpower is forecasting a hopeful hiring climate in Delta and Richmond for the first quarter of 2015. “Survey data reveals that 20 per cent of employers plan to hire for the upcoming quarter (January to March), while 10 per cent anticipate cutbacks,” said Jeff Polkinghorne of Manpower’s Vancouver office. Another 67 per cent of employers plan to maintain their current staffing levels in the upcoming quarter, while three per cent are unsure of their hiring intentions. “We are seeing some cautious, though positive, signs in the labour market in Canada, with employers expecting a fair hiring pace for the coming quarter,” said Michelle Dunnill, Manpower area manager for Toronto, Mississauga and Markham. *** A Delta-based business has been named a semifinalist for the 12th annual Small Business BC Awards. Amando Natural Stone
has made the top 10 nominees in the Best Immigrant Entrepreneur category.
briefs Entrepreneur Karina Eva, who immigrated to Canada from Mexico, founded Amando Natural Stone in 2009 with the goal of collaborating with construction professionals to bring Mexico’s handcrafted natural ornamental and architectural stonework to Canada. From Oct. 1 to Nov. 30, British Columbians were asked to nominate and vote for their favourite small businesses. Amando Natural Stone was nominated in two other categories as well, Best Company and Best International Trade, and made the top 10 for Best Immigrant Entrepreneur. The businesses named to the top 10 in each category will now move forward to face a panel of judges, who will narrow down the competition to five finalists. The finalists will be
announced on Jan. 30 and then each nominee will be invited to give a Dragon’s Den-style pitch to a panel of judges on why they should be named the best in B.C. Winners will be announced Feb. 26 at the Small Business BC Awards ceremony in Vancouver. *** Local realtors once again took part in the annual REALTORS Care Blanket Drive. Now in its 20th year, the annual drive collects blankets and warm clothing that is then donated to the homeless and those in need in the region. This year, more than 17,000 items were donated. Over the last 20 years, the blanket drive has helped bring warmth to more than 250,000 people and all donations remain in the community in which they were collected. The blanket drive is an annual partnership between realtors in Greater Vancouver and the Fraser Valley.

The power of paradox “...For the power of paradox opens our eyes and blinds those who say they can see.” Michael Card’s album, The Life, 1988. Christmas is a season that powerfully embodies living paradox. In the song Mary did you know by Mark Lowry and Buddy Greene, a few of the lines inquire: “Mary did you know that your baby boy is Lord of all Creation... this child that you delivered will soon deliver you.” These living paradoxes are counter-intuitive and countercultural because it is the kind of life that is rooted in divine mystery. The deeper we explore divine mysteries, the greater they become. We cannot exhaust divine mystery because it is, by definition, beyond human com-
prehension. The season of Christmas, the incarnation of God, calls us to be attentive once again to the purpose of Christian faith. To allow Christ Jesus to dwell in us, that through us the light and love of Christ may be a blessing to others. Recently, I was reminded of this in a statement by Les Peter’s Impact Ministries when he spoke in Ladner. “Our time on earth is short. We (Christians) are not a humanitarian organization just trying to raise the standard of this life without affecting the lives of people for all eternity.” Isn’t that just what the birth of Jesus was all about? Have a blessed Christmas and a joy-filled New Year.

All lit up for Christmas Locals go above and beyond with festive light displays

Here is a list of some Christmas light displays around South Delta to check out:
sawwassen’s Owen Pighin keeps his Christmas display a lights-only endeavour. “I think it’s simplistic. People can enjoy it,” he says. “It’s the classic look for me.” Pighin estimates the display at 476 Milsom Wynd includes 30,000 lights. He adds a little bit more, 500 to 1,000, every year. He’s been doing a large display since the mid1990s and since 2007 in Tsawwassen.
“I’ll still say I do it for the kids. That’s the bottom line.” Owen Pighin
“We moved from Vancouver and I just kept it going,” he says. Pighin says he started doing it for his kids, who are almost all adults now. “I’ll still say I do it for the kids. That’s the bottom line.” Pighin, a hockey coach in the area for many years, starts working on the setup on the first day of November for an hour a night. It usually takes 13 or 14 days to finish. • Bobby and Judith Olszowiec are back at it again. They took a year off from doing a big light display due to the fact Bobby suffered a major shoulder injury after tripping over a very friendly dog at the dog park. Their Ladner home features a fully redesigned display with many new lights as well as lights in motion set to music. The display, at 5856-50th Ave., includes over 12,000 lights at last count. It can be seen from 6 to 11 p.m. seven days a week until Jan. 8. • Rose and Lyle McClelland’s place at 5403-

47th Ave. in Ladner is once again all lit up for the holiday season. Their theme is Birds and Nature Wonderland with lighted birds on the house railing, birds in a lighted birdbath in the garden and a birdhouse. There’s also a squirrel, deer, mouse, polar bear and penguins, with a happy dog and owl guarding the front door.
“We’re big kids and love the colours and sounds of Christmas.”
Rose McClelland
“The very large coloured bulbs in our huge cherry tree is a revised installation and it looks spectacular if I do say so myself!” Rose says in an email. They start working on the display, which includes about 10,000 lights, on Nov. 1 and both put in approximately 26 hours of work each.
“We’re big kids and love the colours and sounds of Christmas,” she says, adding they do the display to help light up their neighbourhood and spread Christmas cheer. She says it’s always wonderful to see the kids’ faces as they look around. • The Woodburne family’s Christmas light display at 5305 Camaro Dr. in Tsawwassen is choreographed to music from family favourite movie The Polar Express, featuring songs Hot Chocolate and Spirit of the Season. Tune in to 88.7 FM to enhance your experience when checking out the display. The display also includes a Santa Window, which is a recorded video of Santa Claus. Through the window Santa appears to interact with the audience. The display runs from 5 to 11 p.m. nightly through New Year’s. The Santa Window is lit Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Christmas in Cartagena Colombia’s seaside haven includes bustling Old Town
BY IRENE

Optimist contributor
A blast of warm air welcomes us as we deplane at Cartagena Airport. With Christmas only days away, the Colombian city’s streets are busy with merry local shoppers. Next to our Stil Hotel is a small outdoor bar where men with cold cervasas sit on dozens of plastic chairs. A stone’s throw away women rummage through the best display of running shoes — knock-offs of every major brand — ever seen spread on concrete. Onward for blocks sidewalks are laid with electronics, DVDs of the latest Hollywood blockbusters, toys and all manner of gift items. Fresh fruit and savoury food carts feed the masses. My husband Rick and I veer towards the Arepas con Queso stand — not caring if these delectable fried cakes of ground maize stuffed with melted salty cheese are turning our middles Santarotund. We stockpile them for our Christmas Eve feast, along with chicken and potatoes roasted together in a divine herb sauce, a fruitladen cake and mucho vino. We make our way daily to the walled Old Town. The moment we step through the stately Puerta del Reloj (Clock Gate) it is like a gathering of the United Nations. Cruise ships come into port daily

and passengers are transported by bus or taxi to this enclave to spend the day. The bustle is electric. Hawkers sell hats, Tshirts, cigars and jewelry. Entertainers perform by the outdoor restaurant tables for pesos and we cringe watching a juggler tossing machetes. Cartagena was founded in 1533, swiftly becoming the main Spanish port on the Caribbean coast. It was the place where gold and emeralds, plundered from the indigenous peoples,
were stored until galleons could ship them back to Spain. These treasures made this port a target for British and French pirates, so after several sieges, the elaborate walls went up. Most of them are intact today. The Old Town’s fine old colonial houses, now turned into restaurants and emerald shops, still emit an aura of their dark history. Plaza de los Coches was once a slave market. Further along is San Pedro Claver Square, with a church and convent
dedicated to Jesuit monk Pedro Claver, who spent his life helping the slaves. We’re mesmerised at seeing his remains in a glass coffin in the altar of the church. Facing us while sitting on a bench at Plaza de Bolívar is the Palace of the Inquisition — once a prison with torture chambers and ghastly devices to squeeze confessions from those convicted of heresy against the Catholic faith. We next step into the Gold Museum filled with pre-Hispanic gold objects

from the burial mounds of the Sinú culture, which somehow survived the conquistador pillage. On a lighter note, we stop and listen to Christmas carols spilling from the open doors of Santa Domingo church. Outside this church no one misses taking a gander at the sizable bronze female lying on her side, donated by Colombia’s world-renowned artist/ sculptor Fernando Botero. He is known for his voluminous exaggerated human forms that represent politi-
cal criticism or humour, depending on the piece. Cartagena is a city in which to walk everywhere. One of our ventures is to Castillo San Felipe de Barajas, the huge stone fortress built by the Spanish in 1639, and re-built after each of several attacks. Its complex system of tunnels is eerily fascinating. As we manoeuvre the inclines, declines, corners and straightaways, we learn these passageways for bringing in supplies and troop changes also incorporated defensive strategies — the echo of the chambers are geared to hearing footsteps of the enemy and some passages end in a trap. For a change of pace, a day on Bocagrande beach is heavenly. Swimming in the tepid Caribbean is no problem for us amateurs as stone breakwaters slow down the thrashing waves. Cartagena turns us into nighthawks as we don’t want to miss its glittering buildings and sparkling Christmas trees. On our last night, we watch a fireworks display from our hotel window, an extravaganza that, as well as ringing in the New Year, we consider to be our send-off. Ladner’s Daniel Joseph (left), producer Mandip Sandhu and director David McLoughlin were at the Rio Theatre in Vancouver last Tuesday for a private screening of their film When the Wheels Fall Off. Joseph, a Delta Secondary grad, acted in the independent feature as well as serving as a producer. He says the next step is trying to get the movie, a dark look at life through the eyes of a group of teens, into film festivals.

FAMOUS — in name only What’s it like to go through life with the same name as a celebrity? Does it opens doors or just lead to confusion and ultimately disappointment? Optimist reporter Dave Willis caught up with a few local people who share a name with a celebrity to find out what it’s like to be famous in name only. Photos by Gord Goble. Bradley Cooper Anne Murray

rad Cooper, a Ladner resident of nearly 25 years, shares his name with American actor Bradley Cooper. He quips the famous heartthrob has the same name as him. “I am older, just a bit,” he says. Cooper recalls one time during the 2010 Olympics while he was out with a group downtown after an event and trying to get a seat at a restaurant. After the hostess said it would be a two-hour wait, Cooper asked if there would be a spot available if Bradley Cooper came in. The hostess then asked if the actor was there. “I said, ‘You’re looking at him.’ I said, ‘No, really, film makes me taller, younger, thinner and have more hair.’ I didn’t get in.” ——— Bradley Cooper, known for his starring role in The Hangover trilogy, is an Academy Award-nominated actor. He received Academy Award nominations for his work in Silver Lining
L
ocal singer/songwriter Christine Magee was just a teenager when she got a letter in the mail meant for the Sleep Country Canada co-founder with whom she shares a name. The complaint letter about recently purchased mattresses was bewildering for Magee, who had never heard of the other Magee before. She says the name sharing comes up “all the time,” from booking gigs to friends joking with her and singing the Sleep Country radio ad tune. Magee also recalls one particular time she and her mom were writing some chords together, they realized afterwards the tune sounded similar to the mattress company’s radio jingle. She periodically uses it, as a lead-in to one of her songs, at the end or beginning to her shows. “We’ve been using that. Not all the time, but sometimes.” The name thing is beneficial, though, she says. “It does help me. People will always remember me.”
Playbook (Best Actor) and American Hustle (Best Supporting Actor). Cooper performed voice work for Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy movie, providing the voice for wisecracking bounty hunter Rocket Raccoon. People magazine named Cooper, who’s also a producer, the sexiest man alive in 2011. ——— Ladner’s Brad Cooper is very involved in the community. A member of the Ladner Business
Association for 12 years, he’s also a past president of the organization. He’s spent 14 years with the Ladner Rotary Club and also serves on the municipal finance committee and Boundary Bay Airshow committee. President of Vancouver Pacific Financial Group in Ladner, Cooper was named Delta’s Citizen of the Year in 2008. He is also a former board member of both the Delta Hospital Foundation and Tour de Delta.
Christine Magee
——— Christine Magee is described as a “mom, wife, daughter, friend and well rested mattress lady!” on her Twitter account bio. The co-founder of Sleep Country Canada, which has over 240 corporate-owned stores, is frequently asked to speak at conferences, business associations, chambers of commerce and schools about leadership and effective management strategies, the Sleep Country website notes. ——— Christine Magee is a singer/songwriter from
he fact she shares a name with a famous Canadian singer comes up “all the time” for Tsawwassen’s Anne Murray. A naturalist who gives talks on nature and birds, Murray says sometimes people expect to see the singer. “They just see the famous name and think maybe it’s going to be Anne Murray,” she says. Murray says the same happens when she makes hotel reservations or shows her credit card. However, she says once she’s outside of the country, the coincidence doesn’t raise much interest. “But in Canada, wherever I am in Canada, it comes up,” she says, ——— Anne Murray has sold millions of albums over her lengthy singing career. Known as Canada’s Songbird, Murray hails from Springhill, Nova Scotia. She is a four-time Grammy winner and has over 20 Juno Awards to her credit. She is a member of the Canadian Country
L
Tsawwassen. Her debut album, Overcome, was released in 2007. She won a Gospel Music Association Canada Covenant Award for her song Loud and Clear, which was included on that album. Set to perform at a Wander Inn Café event in Ladner tomorrow night, Magee has started to venture out more to Vancouver, including a gig at a coffee house downtown in January. She says she’s moving into the soul, R&B and gospel genres as she writes. Magee also teaches piano, voice and guitar.
adner’s Colin Campbell isn’t a big sports fan but he has heard of the former National Hockey League player, coach and current front office member. During the NHLer’s playing days, the local Campbell, a retired high school principal, sometimes got phone calls meant for the defenceman. “I was in school administration. I was used to rude phone calls,” he says with a laugh. The calls were typically from somebody upset with something the other Campbell had or hadn’t done on the ice. “He wasn’t the most polite player in the league and some people didn’t care for him, we found out.” ——— Former defenceman Colin Campbell played for five teams, including the Vancouver Canucks, during his NHL tenure from 1974 to 1985. He amassed 1,292 penalty minutes over 636 regular season games. Campbell went on to coach the New York Rangers for a
Music Hall of Fame, the Juno Hall of Fame and the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame. “For over 40 years, her unique voice and heartwarming style have made her a household name,” her website states. ——— Tsawwassen’s Anne Murray is an author, columnist and blogger who volunteers with bird and nature organizations. She is the author of A Nature Guide to Boundary Bay and Tracing Our Past
~ A Heritage Guide to Boundary Bay and a major contributing author to the Georgia Basin Habitat Atlas: Boundary Bay. A columnist for the Delta Optimist and Georgia Straight, Murray, who’s originally from England, is on the board of Bird Studies Canada and is also helping with the BC Breeding Bird Atlas, a project that’s the result of years of work from many people, she notes. Murray is also a contributor to BirdWatching magazine.

stint in the 1990s. He eventually joined the league’s front office and is the current senior executive vice president of hockey operations. ——— The local Campbell has been involved with the restoration of Kirkland House for the last two decades. He got started when he stopped and asked Matt Rogers, another longtime volunteer, if he’d like a hand clearing some vegetation at the heritage home on Arthur Drive. “I got involved by clear-
ing blackberries by hand with Matt 20 years ago,” he says. Campbell is the current president of the Kirkland House Foundation. “I keep saying we get zero dollars an hour and I’m in charge, so I get time and a half,” he jokes. Work continues on the home, originally built in 1911. Campbell is a former chairperson of Tour de Delta and was on the Delta Community Living Society board for 10 years.

adner’s Robert Lowe shares his name with a well-known American actor. “I’m an ‘80s kid,” Lowe says, noting the actor’s name was well known during that time. He says there was some teasing growing up, more so as a teen, about sharing the name. A few people recognize the coincidence these days but it doesn’t come up very often. Lowe, being a fan of hockey, remembers the actor appearing in the film Youngblood, a 1986 movie about an American hockey prospect trying to make it in a Canadian junior league. ——— Rob Lowe, who can be currently seen in commercials urging viewers to switch from cable to a satellite TV provider, has compiled a lengthy list of credits on both the big and small screen. He’s appeared in films like St. Elmo’s Fire, Wayne’s World, Tommy Boy and Austin Powers and TV shows including The West

he fact Ladner’s Thomas Mueller shares a name with a German soccer star came up often during this year’s World Cup. Mueller says he was “inundated” on Facebook. Most were joking with him but some people were asking if he was related to Germany’s Thomas Müller. “My buddies were razzing me too. That was pretty funny,” says Mueller. He says he was rooting for Müller during the World Cup in Brazil, which Germany ended up winning. “I watched it all. I was glued to it.” Mueller, who has German heritage and cousins living there, says he’s not related to the recent World Cup winner. “Müller is like a Smith here in North America,” he says. “It’s quite common.” ——— Thomas Müller is a German national team member and plays his club soccer with Bayern Munich, a powerhouse in the Bundesliga. He has a pair of World Cups under his belt, helping Germany to the title this year and was a part of the country’s third place finish in 2010. He captured the tourna-

Lowe released a memoir, Stories I Only Tell my Friends: An Autobiography, in 2011 and another book, Love Life, earlier this year. ——— Born and raised in Ladner, Robert Lowe is now running his own business in his hometown community. He owns Stir Coffee

House in Ladner Village. Lowe’s passion for coffee started a few years before opening the coffee shop in 2012 and it continues to grow. The business, which has picked up Delta Optimist Readers’ Choice awards the last two years, keeps Lowe busy. Asked what he does while not at work, he says he’s there most of the time and doesn’t get much leisure in these days.

He ended up with the Silver Boot as the second highest scorer. Müller helped Bayern Munich to a Champions League title in 2013 and multiple German league championships.
sawwassen’s John Montgomery was in downtown Vancouver with a group of friends during the 2010 Winter Olympics the same day skeleton racer Jon Montgomery won gold for Canada. He says he was playing up the fact they shared the same name. He eventually ran into a group of Australians while out and about and brought up the name coincidence. “They said something to the effect of, ‘It happened in Whistler and now you’re here. You really are fast!’” Montgomery was dressed in a Canadian outfit and had a gold medal with him as well. “I had a gold medal I was truckin’ around town with.” He says he remembers Montgomery’s gold medalwinning run and his celebration. “(He) gave Canada the swagger.” ——— Russell, Manitoba’s Jon Montgomery was among the Canadian contingent of

——— Thomas Mueller says he has been a hairdresser since he was 18. He works out of a salon built into his Ladner home. He actually played soccer growing up but not as an adult. Due to his father’s work as a diplomat, Mueller was out of the country throughout his childhood, playing soccer in places like Cyprus and Jamaica. He’s lived in Ladner since 1990.
eople don’t really associate the fact Kevin Smith shares her name with anybody famous. “Actually they’re just focused on Kevin being a woman. Everything else goes out the door,” she says. “You’ve got to be quick. Some people are just all over you,” she adds. Smith recalls one time she met another woman with a not so common first name, thinking she would understand, but after Smith introduced herself, she says the other just replied, “‘That’s a boy’s name!’” Smith got her name from her parents. “It’s funny. It’s been a hoot.” ——— Actor, director, author and podcaster Kevin Smith is known for his role in the Jay and Silent Bob duo and for films like Clerks, Mallrats, Chasing Amy, Dogma, and Zack and Miri Make a Porno. He has written comic books for Marvel Comics and DC Comics, notably working on Daredevil (Marvel), Green Arrow (DC) and Batman (DC). Smith, who owns Jay and Silent Bob’s Secret Stash, a comic book store in New Jersey, can be seen on the AMC reality show Comic Book Men. ———

gold medal winners at the 2010 Winter Olympics held here in B.C. His memorable celebration walking through Whistler Village with a pitcher of beer turned in to one of the iconic moments of the Games. The Canadian Olympic team’s website notes he made an appearance on the Oprah Winfrey Show and was a presenter at the Juno Awards. Montgomery is now the host of the Amazing Race Canada TV show.
——— John Montgomery is the founder and president of Professional Flight Centre. The flight school is based at Boundary Bay Airport and is one of Canada’s largest flight training institutions. Operating since 1986, it attracts students from around the world. Montgomery, who has extensive aviation experience under his belt, owns the business with his wife Blythe.
Kevin Smith
Tsawwassen’s Kevin Smith works as a house cleaner. She also runs a mixed adult volleyball league out of Hugh Boyd, a Richmond high school. She’s run the league for 35 years.
“I really, really liked volleyball when I graduated and at that time there was nothing organized.” She doesn’t play anymore. “I retired, my thumbs are done.”

Edwardson takes flight in Portland Tsawwassen soccer product enjoys impressive freshman season with Pilots at NCAA Div. 1 level BY

CURT MORGAN
Optimist contributor
A grounded young lad, Erik Edwardson is anything but, on the pitch. The high flying winger for the University of Portland Pilots men’s soccer team is coming off a standout freshman season. He was an honourable mention selection for the West Coast All-Conference First Team, after cracking the starting 11 with the NCAA Division One school. The 18-year-old had three goals and two assists in 19 appearances. The Tsawwassen Soccer Club product had high praise for his hometown association, calling it a “great program.” “The coaches do a very good job of keeping players interested, to enjoy soccer first and foremost and not to worry about results as long as they are having fun,” he said. Edwardson spent the final years of his youth career in the B.C. Premier Soccer League with the Vancouver/Richmond based Fusion F.C. where he was further developed by coach Alex Elliot. “Erik consistently shows that he has a professional mindset and prides himself on his technical consistency,” said Elliot. It’s why the University of Portland graduate had no problem recommending Edwardson to his former school. “Given that his mindset is that of a top professional, he will create further opportunity to play at the professional level” he went on to explain in an e-mail to The Optimist. Pilots director of soccer and coach Bill Irwin echoed those statements saying “(Erik) is obviously a talented player and has a good future in the game.” Irwin went on to explain that he would also like to see Edwardson be more aggressive when he gets involved, but also said “if he continues to improve he will make a living at it.” Improving is something the lone Canadian on the Pilots roster is well aware of. Portland finished the season with a 4-11-4 record, including

Tsawwassen’s Erik Edwardson cracked University of Portland’s starting line-up this past season as a true freshman. 0-6-1 in conference play. “It was a pretty disappointing, not making the playoffs, but it was a great learning experience and we’re confident going into next season,” he said. “It’s important to not forget about it, but at the same time move forward from it and keep it in the back of our minds to motivate us.” Edwardson points to a lot of the steps he has taken in his life that have helped him develop as a player and a person, including a five month stint in 2013 with German powerhouse Bayern Munich. Staying with a head scout, he trained up to three times a week
with the U17 team. He also worked out with a local club just outside of the city. “Not only learning how to play good soccer, but the language and cultural aspect of it was important too” he said on his time with the European giants. Edwardson also trained with Vancouver Whitecaps F.C. before he left for school which helped him prepare for the pace and physicality that is college soccer. In the classroom, he isn’t sure yet whether or not he will continue with his major in business “but so far I really like it and think that’s something I’ll probably stick too.”
Though he plies his trade for the soccer team, he knows he is “there for two reasons, to play soccer and go to school. To remember who I am doing this for and I haven’t lost the aspiration to play soccer professionally.” Back home for the holidays, Edwardson is looking forward to returning to Portland to finish up the school year and continuing his personal developed training program. He isn’t letting his goals get in the way of the moment and what he needs to do now to succeed in the future. No matter where he ends up, he will do well.

23-9111 No.5 Rd, Richmond A couple of Ladner baseball players have cashed in on the diamond in Las Vegas. Matthew Wilkinson and Jakob Wegner were members of the New West-based Bullpen Baseball School’s travelling team that was coached by Fred Sabtatine. The roster also featured talent from Hastings, Cloverdale, Whalley, Burnaby and Little Mountain. The team finished second in its round-robin group and captured the division with a 12-10 win over the Patriots from California in the championship game. Wilkinson started the final on the mound and worked hard in his final two innings of eligibility to shutdown the opposition. Both local boys also came up big at the plate with Wegner connecting for a home run and a double. Wilkinson was also terrific in his team’s quarter-final win, throwing four shutout innings and striking out 10. The Bullpen then beat the Orange County Bears 8-3 in the semi-finals. In earlier pool play, the locals posted an unbeaten 3-0-1 record against opposition from California, New Mexico and Nevada.
Grade 10s lead Pacers to 1st place at Sabre Classic
Delta Pacers senior boys basketball team will head into a holiday break with a tournament win under its belt after capturing last weekend’s Sabre Classic at Guildford Park secondary. The Pacers held off a late charge from Sullivan Heights for an 89-87 win in last Saturday’s championship game. Delta took a 71-57 lead into the fourth quarter and enjoyed a seven point advantage with less than three minutes remaining but needed a pair of free throws from Jas Singh to secure the win. Singh finished with a game-high 26 points to earn tournament MVP honours. Fellow Grade 10 Jake Cowley added 17 and

was named to the all-star team. Mackenzie Falk also hit for 17, while Colton Bakken added 12. The Pacers advanced to the final with a hard-fought 61-56 overtime win over Valleyview from Kamloops. They had opened Fraser Valley AAAA South League play two nights earlier with a 105-28 win over Elgin Park. In exhibition play Wednesday, Delta let a late lead slip away in an 82-80 loss to the Richmond Colts. Singh had 30 for the hosts. Cowley added 21. The Pacers will see action in the new year at the St. Thomas More Chancellor Tournament — Jan. 7-10.
