Prime Minister Stephen Harper visited Delta yesterday morning to announce an apprentice loan program aimed at getting more young people into trades. The prime minister made the announcement at BCIT’s Annacis Island vocational campus, where Harper, standing in front of a

large group of truck mechanic students, noted the country needs many more skilled tradespersons if infrastructure projects are to be built and the economy is to grow. “Apprenticeships play an important role in Canada’s postsecondary education system and are a key provider of the vital skills and knowledge necessary to power and grow the Canadian economy,” he said.

“The Canada Apprentice Loan initiative will allow young people from across the country to access jobs in the skilled trades that are in-demand in different sectors and regions — from shipbuilding in the east, to mining in the north, to oil and gas projects in the west.” The program will provide access to interest-free loans to help apprentices address the costs they encounter during technical

training, including educational fees, tools and equipment, living expenses and forgone wages. It is estimated that at least 26,000 apprentices a year will benefit from over $100 million in loans. Some of those on hand for Thursday’s event included DeltaRichmond East MP Kerry-Lynne Findlay, who said Delta is a vital link in the national economy.

Additional security measures will be taken as international jihadists have declared war on Canada, Prime Minister Stephen Harper vowed yesterday during a stop in Delta. Harper, who was at BCIT’s Annacis Island campus to announce an apprentice loan program, faced a myriad of questions from the media about what the government will “The reality of do about the terror- the world is the ist threat following: ... the to this international country following jihadist the mass movement has shooting at the French declared war.” satirical Prime Minister newspaper Stephen Harper Charlie Hebdo, a massacre that’s drawn international condemnation. “Let me just say this with reference, obviously, to the attack yesterday to all the questions you’re asking. The reality of the world is the following: ... the international jihadist movement has declared war. They have declared war on anybody who doesn’t think and act exactly as they wish and think and act. “We may not like this and wish it will go away, but it is not going to go away.” Harper said the government has introduced measures in Bill C-44, which is making its way through the legislative process.

Port Metro Vancouver has a new long-term Land Use Plan, but says the region faces a serious challenge with a lack of industrial land. The port authority recently made public the final version of its plan, which sets out how it will manage the land in its jurisdiction over the next 15 to 20 years. The port notes it’s maximizing the efficiency of its operations and improving existing infrastructure to handle more cargo using the land currently available, but says there’s a “serious threat” posed to the local and national economies by a shrinking industrial land base in Metro Vancouver. That message was delivered in a speech several weeks ago by port president and CEO Robin Silvester at the Vancouver Board of Trade, where he reiterated his call for an industrial land reserve. “Industrial land enables trade, creates jobs and provides tax revenues to municipalities,” said

Despite projects such as the Dayhu Group’s first of two 440,000-square-foot buildings at the Boundary Bay Industrial Park, aimed at warehouse and distribution businesses, Port Metro Vancouver’s Robin Silvester is warning of a serious shortage of industrial land in the region. Silvester. “Metro Vancouver currently has a supply of industrial land that is sufficient to meet demand for up to 15 years at most. If we don’t act now, we will face a serious and imminent shortage with significant consequences.” He noted studies indicate

2,300 additional acres of industrial land will be needed in the gateway by 2025 to meet increasing cargo demand. “(The port) will continue to engage the region in a constructive and meaningful dialogue to find solutions to the shared industrial land challenges,” he said.

Silvester didn’t specify where any new industrial land would come from, but noted the new land use plan includes the port protecting the remaining supply of industrial land within its jurisdiction. According to the port authority, the plan “assists tenants and customers in

identifying areas to locate or expand their operations and investments, and provides neighbouring residents and communities with greater clarity about activities and uses that may occur on port lands.” The potential industrialization of large areas of Delta’s prime agricultural land has been a topic of concern the past couple of years despite new industrial sites becoming available at Boundary Bay Airport and Tsawwassen First Nation. Silvester’s comments will likely add fuel to those concerns. Last fall, NAIOP Vancouver (the Commercial Real Estate Development Association of Metro Vancouver) released a study that concluded there’s just over an 11-year supply of industrial land. “However, this total inventory is made up of largely smaller parcels and in areas that are not ideal for development; therefore, the inventory required for continued economic growth will be absorbed in half that time,” stated a NAIOP news release.

Port warning concerns farmland advocates BY

SANDOR GYARMATI

sgyarmati@delta-optimist.com

Port Metro Vancouver’s new land use plan and its warnings of a shrinking industrial land supply are nothing more than schemes designed to strip the Agricultural Land Reserve. That’s the warning from Delta South MLA Vicki Huntington and Richmond councillor and ALR advocate Harold Steves. “When you look at industrial land for high density uses, they’ve got Boundary Bay (airport) as a major industrial park, which it was never intended to be, and they own a lot of land themselves near the Alex Fraser Bridge — the South Fraser Perimeter Road actually went around

the land they own there — but it’s never enough for them,” Huntington told the Optimist. “They want to industrialize the entire Fraser delta and unless we say no, unless the province steps in and says no, unless the federal government steps in, who’s going to stop it? Certainly our politicians don’t have the guts to protect the environment.” Steves agreed, saying the port is clearly eyeing land despite it being in the ALR. “He (Port Metro Vancouver president and CEO Robin Silvester) has his eyes on 3,000 acres of farmland, and it’s mostly in Richmond and Delta and Branston Island, the best farmland in all of Canada,” said Steves.

FILE PHOTOS

Harold Steves and Vicki Huntington worry farmland will be lost if government doesn’t step up. Meanwhile, the graphics in the port’s latest Land Use Plan depict a potential widening of the causeway. Prior to reaching the current container terminal, both sides of the causeway are now just water, previously designated as “Port Marine/ Port Water.” The new designation changes that to “Special Study Area.”

According to the port, having areas with special study designations means additional study, consultation and planning are required to determine their future. Huntington said she believes there’s no doubt the port plans to fill in the site. Steves noted the port also has a so-called “study area” in a Richmond agri-

cultural area that is certain to become warehouses if it gets its way. “We’ve been objecting to it and, as a matter of fact, when we had the so-called (ALR review) consultation with the minister of agriculture at the end of August, we (Richmond council) put in an official complaint requesting the provincial government prohibit the port from converting farmland to port industrial uses,” Steves said. “Whether it’s a study area in Richmond or Delta, it’s to put in a door for the port. If they are successful and claim they have the right to develop those lands whenever they feel like, and if provincial designations mean nothing to them, then Delta is gone.”

A Tsawwassen teen’s bid to receive experimental cancer treatment in the U.S. has hit another roadblock. Kyle McConkey was in Seattle earlier this week for his initial consultation with doctors, however the family was told the treatment could not begin right away because the 18-year-old has developed graft-versus-host disease. It’s a side effect from the stem cell transplant he underwent in the fall where the transplanted cells recognize the patient’s body as foreign and start attacking it, causing inflammation. The family has returned to South Delta and Kyle’s dad, Ross McConkey, said they were told it could take four to six weeks to clear up.

“We’re sort of in a holding pattern right now,” he told the Optimist. Kyle is able to be at home, but must make twice weekly trips to the hospital for treatment. The South Delta Secondary grad has been battling leukemia for more than two years. Initially diagnosed in July 2012, Kyle underwent chemotherapy, radiation and a bone marrow transplant from younger brother Keegan, followed by several months in hospital. The cancer was in remission for some time, however it returned last spring and was not responding to treatment. After the transplant that failed in November, the family was told Kyle had just weeks left. The family was subsequently contacted by the mother of a young leuke-

Kyle McConkey mia patient who has been cancer-free for 18 months following the experimental therapy. The treatment, however, isn’t covered and costs around $250,000. The family started an online crowdfunding page in late November to try and raise the money to cover the treatment. The outpouring of support was overwhelming and the target was reached in less than a week. The page raised more than $282,000.

If you see anything occurring that you believe to be suspicious, call 911 for in-progress crimes and emergencies or 604-9464411 for other assistance. The following are some of the calls the Delta police responded to in the previous week: Tsawwassen • Dec. 30, 2:50 p.m., English Bluff Road: Police responded to a report that a male was running down the street yelling suicidal threats. Police located the male who indicated he was having an argument with his girlfriend and had no intention of harming himself. The man was transported to his home and released to the custody and safe care of his mother who was confident her son was not suicidal. • Dec. 31, 11:15 a.m., 52nd Street and Springs Boulevard: Complainant was slowing for the traffic travelling south when he was rear-ended by another vehicle. The driver of the offending vehicle indicated she was blinded by the sun and did not see the brake lights in front of her. There was minor damage to both vehicles. The complainant was transported to hospital as a precaution and his vehicle was towed from the scene. • Dec. 31, 11:35 a.m., 5600-block of 12th Avenue:

• Dec. 31, 1:30 p.m., 1100-block of 56th Street: The arts centre reported graffiti had been written on the exterior walls and doors with a Sharpie. The graffiti had already been removed but the complainant provided the police with photos of the graffiti and the name of a possible suspect. • Jan. 1, 2:11 a.m., 1200block of 56th Street: Police located an intoxicated male who had passed out and was unresponsive. The male was transported to hospital and his parents notified. • Jan. 1, 4:13 a.m., 1100block of Walalee Drive: Complainant reported someone had smashed the rear glass patio door with a brick and was ransacking the lower floor. The suspect quickly grabbed several items before fleeing the home. K9 track did not locate the suspect. This was the second break-in in the area in a 90-minute period. • Jan. 1, 11:34 a.m., 5500-block of 8A Avenue: Report received from the complainant that his neighbour’s front door had a hole in it and he believed the home had been broken into.

Police attended and found the suspects had gained entry through the front door and rummaged through the bedrooms and kitchen. Forensic identification section attended to process the scene. • Jan. 1, 1:13 p.m., 5500-block of 8A Avenue: Complainant reported someone had attempted to pry open the rear patio door but failed to gain access to the residence. Attempted break and enter likely related to the previous incident reports in the same area. Ladner • Dec. 29, 1:09 a.m., 5900-block of Ferry Road: Police located two males who were reported to be in the complex hot tub without permission. Suspects admitted they did not reside in the complex but had gained access from a friend who resided in the complex. Neither suspect could provide the name of the friend. Police advised the suspects they were trespassing and any similar incidents in the future may result in criminal charges. • Dec. 30, 8:23 a.m., 9000-block of Ladner Trunk Road: Cable lines were cut in multiple locations in order to remove the copper wire. A hacksaw left at the scene was seized for forensic examination. The total damage and cost to repair is extensive. • Jan. 1, 5:57 a.m., 5700block of Ladner Trunk Road: Vandals smashed the glass panels of the bus shelter, leaving broken glass on road, sidewalk and bench.

TED MURPHY

MURPHY’S LAW It should come as absolutely no surprise that Delta Global Campus has ceased operations. If the name doesn’t ring a bell, it’s the company the Delta school district established more than five years ago to sell exams to overseas students in an effort to prop up our perennially cash-strapped school system. Given the district has done very well financially by providing a made-in-Delta education for international students, it stood to reason that if students couldn’t make it over here in person, money could be made by taking our curriculum to them. At least that was the theory. It obviously didn’t work out that way as the company floundered in its attempts to get a foothold in the Asian market. As soon as one hurdle was cleared, another seemed to go up, leaving the operation spinning its wheels. With hope that a breakthrough was just around the corner, there was never any shortage of optimism among those involved, but in the end the for-profit entity simply didn’t produce the desired profits. That’s certainly not a knock on trustees and senior staff, as well as the volunteer board of Delta Global Campus, who all deserve credit for their efforts to generate much-needed revenue for the school district. However, it is a criticism of an education system that’s forcing underfunded districts to branch out into the business world when clearly they’re not set up to do so. It’s bad enough districts are pitted against one another through academies, international students and other enrollment-boosting initiatives, but to be out peddling a B.C. education on the other side of the planet takes revenue generation to a whole new, and not necessarily flattering, level. Having said that, I have no doubt there’s money to be made by doing so, but rather than a fragmented approach where individual districts do their own thing, it would make much more sense for the provincial government to take the lead. Victoria is in a far better position to offer educational products overseas and that way any money raised could be spread evenly throughout the system rather than the possibility of creating have and have-not districts. I’m sure pulling the plug on Delta Global Campus was a difficult decision for those involved after so much time had been invested in laying a foundation. However, if it’s any consolation, it should be noted that school districts were created to provide local kids with an education, not flog their services overseas.

Seawall breach in ’Bay offers glimpse into what’s to come IAN ROBERTSON

COMMUNITY COMMENT A month ago some very high seasonal tides threatened the Boundary Bay area of South Delta — enough for the mayor to declare a local state of emergency. The combination of a southeast windstorm and high tides allowed the ocean to breach the seawall. Thanks to swift action by our municipal engineering folks, sand and other materials were brought in to fend off the water before damage was done. Was this a warning? Is the future coming at us? I have been privileged to be a member of the 1990 and the 2010 Tsawwassen Area Plan committees. In the recent plan, the issue of global warming and sea level rise was a topic of some discussion. The consensus of the reports is that our sea is rising, and faster here than in some other parts of the world.

Letters to the Editor

Local merchants brighten Christmas for those at Vancouver safe house

Editor: Christmas at our home was a little delayed this year. As two of our offspring had to work to Dec. 27, our festivities were delayed until the next day. Our daughter works at a safe house in East Vancouver and my husband suggested we go down there on Christmas Day and maybe take a little baking for the residents. The thought of doing more

baking wasn’t too appealing to me as my schedule was already tight with our own Christmas preparations and volunteer work, so two days before Christmas I approached our local grocery stores and bakeries in hopes of getting a few small donations to brighten the lives of those who have nothing. Most establishments already had food donation requests so the prospect of

getting a couple of packages of cookies didn’t look too promising. I was advised to come back the next day, Christmas Eve, near closing time. I was shocked at the response. I wanted to hug these generous business people as we loaded boxes and bags of perishables into my car. It was overwhelming. On Christmas Day we arrived in East Vancouver

laden with these goodies. The staff went “wow” and the residents’ eyes brightened at the sight of these sweet treats. I would like to give a heartfelt thank you to Richlea Bakery, Cobs Bakery, Save-On-Foods and Safeway for their most generous donations. They definitely put a glimmer of Christmas happiness into many lives that day. Donna and Jim Poirier

Village will wither without support of the people Editor: The Gage Canadian Dictionary defines “village” as: a group of houses, stores, schools, churches, etc. that together with the people living there form a community with fixed boundaries. Ladner certainly fills that definition. As Ladner begins 2015, let us join in the celebration that is our village and all that it holds dear to its

residents — those “people living there.” The stores, churches and schools are integral to Ladner and are the basis of its prosperity; however, in order to maintain that prosperity, those same “people living there” ought to ensure the stores are supported to the fullest in order to keep “people living there.” Without a healthy local economy, there will be little

need for stores, schools, churches and the collection known as “etc.” We note that in the centre of Ladner Village, there are a few shuttered spots and we wonder why those spaces have not been filled with enterprising proprietors. Can it be that the rents are exorbitant? Or, possibly, a seer has predicted a downturn in local business due to the TFN malls set to burst

Including girls sets a good example

Editor: Congratulations to the South Delta Pee Wee female C1 hockey team that participated in the Party In Da House tournament last weekend. My son had the privilege of playing against this team of hard working girls and I enjoyed watching the game. I admit, when I first saw “Female” on our schedule, I did raise an eyebrow not knowing what to expect. But once the puck was

dropped, it was just another game. Our boys gave it their all, and so did the girls in a competitive and exciting game. In the end, the boys prevailed but the girls deserve full credit for a hard fought game. I was impressed with their overall skill and they should be proud of their efforts. Congratulations must also go to the South Delta Minor Hockey Association for its decision to invite this female team to play in the Party In Da House.

It was a great opportunity for the girls to participate in a high level tournament and face competition they might not otherwise face in an all-girls tournament or house league play, and a great development tool to help elevate their game. It sets a good example for all minor hockey and is a positive step forward for women’s hockey. It’s nice to see that South Delta Minor Hockey puts hockey first and gender second. Bruce Larkin

upon the greater community within a year or so? Or, possibly, it is simply a lack of support for local businesses brought about by malaise on the part of shoppers. Who knows? We know, though, that we wish only the very best for the “stores, schools, churches and etc.” of Ladner in 2015 and onward. Let us not let the village wither. Bob and Shirley Orrick

Unpatriotic liberal out of element Editor: Re: Snowbird in training learning the ropes at Arizona RV park, Community Comment, Dec. 31 ML Burke’s commentary on her six-week vacation in Arizona would be more aptly titled “Unpatriotic liberal atheist is a fish out of water in freedom-loving Arizona.” Why does she visit a country whose values she obviously has so much disdain? Burke’s attitude toward our American friends is embarrassing. Doug Floer

BY THE BAY 2014 was a bittersweet year for nature in the Fraser delta. While some species fared well, others struggled desperately for survival. Our wealth of migratory wildlife is unique in Canada and needs proactive attention. Let’s make it a priority for the New Year! Bird counts were high. More raptor and owl species hunted delta fields in winter than anywhere else in the country, though snowy owls stayed north. Trumpeter swans and snow geese joined flocks of ducks on flooded farmland, and waterfowl filled Boundary Bay. April brought clouds of shorebirds heading north to breed — 78,000 sandpipers were counted in just one day at Roberts Bank. Local eulachon, the once abundant little candlefish, had a disastrous year as their spawning areas are gone. In contrast, over 20 million sockeye salmon headed upriver last summer, the returning cohort of the exceptional 2010 spawning run. Canadian and U.S. fishers had a bonanza, as did the bald eagles. Sadly, many seabirds and even a harbour porpoise or two were killed as by-catch in fishing nets.

Warming ocean waters and a densovirus were blamed for a mysterious sea star wasting disease affecting the northeast Pacific coast. Divers in B.C. were shocked to find mounds of dead and dissolving starfish on the ocean floor. Scientists studying the outbreak hope that young

It is scary to think how quickly a common creature like the purple ochre star can disappear. Wildlife habitats in the delta are being destroyed and it is difficult to create new ones. For example, Port Metro Vancouver removed a large number of logs from Boundary Bay’s shoreline as compensation for developments such as Terminal 2 on Roberts Bank. Real imitators “Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children, and live in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.” Ephesians 5:1,2 This verse is an amazing one for me to ponder as I journey into a new calendar year. I commend it to you. I love the first image — that of a child mimicking a parent. This is how language is learned and so many other life skills. We are to mimic God in this way as beloved children. I find it fascinating that we are not told to imitate or mimic a person, no matter how holy or good. We are to imitate God. How can we know God and so imitate God? It seems the first condi-

tion is to become like children in our focused attention upon God. Secondly, it speaks to me of a sincere desire to learn. The writer is, in effect, saying, “If you want to imitate God, then imitate the life of love that Jesus lived; live that same love.” And the nature of that love-ofGod-in-Jesus-Christ is sacrificial, a love that puts others first. It was an act of Jesus’ will, as all love is, to offer himself. Jesus “got it right” the first time, and his life was accepted as a fragrant offering to God. So then it is God incarnate who shows us how to imitate God. How else could it have happened unless God became human in the person of Jesus Christ? Truly awesome.

ean Michael Hayes details his adventure to Peru in his new book Five Weeks in the Amazon. The author, who grew up in Tsawwassen and graduated from South Delta Secondary, self-published the book last month after a successful Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign. Hayes, 31, a former pro skateboarder who went on to work in the skateboarding industry, says he went on the trip looking for answers. Hayes had a six-figure salary by the time he was 25 but by 28 he had lost his job, marriage as well as himself, according to a press release. After great successes it felt like things came falling apart, he says. “There were a lot of things I wanted answers to and no matter what I tried in our Western society, whether it be researching, reading the books, trying to study spirituality, going to the doctors, I couldn’t really figure it out here,” he says. “I thought maybe going back to our natural way of solving these problems might be the answer and that’s why I went and sought out this shaman.” Hayes found the shaman and says he learned all about her medicines and practices. “All I pretty much knew was her name and area of the jungle, but in these kinds of places that was enough.” He took ayahuasca, a psychedelic brew, and went on a natural diet. “What I had envisioned in my mind was a lot more extreme than what it was,” he says of the ayahuasca experience. “I was thinking I was going to go there and holy crap it was going to be this extreme thing that was going to take me to another planet.” Hayes estimates he had about 300 bug bites within the first week in the Amazon but over the last week of the trip, due to his new diet, he’d only got bit a couple of times. “You become in sync with nature a little bit. You’re eating the right food from the right place and you get in sync.” He describes the diet as really simple with the main thing being the removal of all preservatives, seasonings and most meats. Hayes went to the Amazon in November of 2012 and wrote in a travel journal each day. “I’d write at least a page or two of what I was experiencing,” he says. He had a launch event for his debut book at Four Winds Brewing Company in Tilbury. Hayes, who had been living in California the last eight years, has been doing a lot of travelling lately. He’s been backpacking in Colombia and says he’s heading to Thailand this month. Hayes says he really enjoys travelling. “One of the things I really feel is important is just basi-

Savouring Vancouver Island one bite at a time BY

Optimist contributor

“This,” says Rose Lee with a grin, “is a bike tour where you won’t break a sweat.” Along with some fellow travel writers, I’ve arrived in Victoria. We’ve been outfitted with some cool cruiser bikes from The Pedaler, along with the aforementioned promise of sweat-free city riding. In retrospect, I wish Lee had taken us on a hilly marathon to help combat the calories we were about to take in, because this bike-propelled food tour was merely the start to an epic four-day Savour Vancouver Island culinary press trip. As promised, we cruised through Victoria’s flat streets, gorging on tastytreats like Zambri’s hand-crafted pizza, two (!) ice cream tastings, Stir It Up Jamaican patties, delightful brews at Fernwood Coffee, beers at The Guild and topped it all off with Bon Macarons. After leaving our bikes, and just in case we were feeling a little peckish, we headed over to the Victoria Public Market. The market opened in September 2013 and is housed in the historical and very-renovated former Hudson’s Bay store. There’s a farmers market each Wednesday, but the rest of the week is for visiting the permanent food vendors like the delectable La Cocina de Mama. I slurped back tortilla soup that rivaled any I’ve had in Mexico and then Hoovered a plate of sinfully-caramelized plantains before we went on for pastries, pie, Indian food, roasted pork and artisanal goat cheese. By the time we left the market, had drinks and appetizers at the Magnolia Hotel’s Catalano Restaurant and then bel-

lied up to the platters of pork and beef at the busy North 48 Restaurant, I was dropdead dizzy with caloric overload. By the middle of the second day, I made a call home to complain. My phone call did not go at all like I planned. I wanted sympathy from my husband and clearly he was not going to deliver. “Look,” I tried again, “this Vancouver Island culinary tour is just so exhausting. I can’t eat any more. I can’t have one more freshly-shucked oyster, tuck into any more Cold Comfort ice cream or eat another

speck of Salt Spring Island goat cheese. He laughed. I tried again. “I’m too old for this. We’ve eaten our way through Victoria, Salt Spring Island and Cowichan and it’s only just past noon. I want to come home and flop on the couch. I don’t want to try one more cocktail with appetizers after spending a day grazing through food markets. I don’t want another glass of Prosecco or a special martini... no matter how perfectly dry.” He chuckled annoyingly and said, “You

know you love it.” I tried not to sound huffy when I said goodbye. Besides, it was time to tuck into the Merridale Ciderworks for the charcuterie platter and then go out for dinner. The next morning we arrived in Tofino and enjoyed a couple of food-free hours to walk on the surf-pounded beach. Thankfully, the fresh air helped create a little belly space so I could enjoy what would turn out to be one of the best dinners of my life. The Wolf in the Fog restaurant had a great vibe; woodsy, hip but without pretence. I’ve always loved Tofino, but if there was nothing else in the entire town but this restaurant, I’d make the trip. (Subsequent to this tour, I found out that Wolf in the Fog was named the best new restaurant in Canada in enRoute’s annual top 10 list; a very well-deserved honour.) Finally, after an entire long weekend of feasting in Tofino, Duncan, Cowichan Bay, Salt Spring Island and Victoria, I arrived home; knackered, thicker and quite determined that I would make up for all those debauched hours by sipping only water and nibbling on kale leaves. Instead, I tugged on my sweat pants, settled into the sofa beside the man who refused to understand my hard life, and opened up the box of Rogers chocolates that had somehow snuck into my bag. Flipping open my laptop, I scrolled through the past four days of photos and smiled. I licked some chocolate off my fingers and adjusted my waistband to their largest setting. African choir set to visit Watoto group will perform at SD Baptist Church

The Watoto Children’s Choir from Africa will visit next weekend for a performance in Tsawwassen. Watoto choirs have travelled internationally since the mid ‘90s as advocates for children in Africa orphaned as a result of HIV/AIDS, war, poverty and disease. Accompanied by a team of adults, the

choir presents Watoto’s vision and mission through stories, music and dance, the group’s website notes. “Each of the children in the choir has suffered the loss of their parents either through war or disease. They live in Watoto children’s villages,” the site states. “The experience gives the children exposure

The children’s choir will perform at South Delta Baptist Church, 198856th St., Tsawwassen, on Sunday, Jan. 18 at 10 a.m. There is no cost for admission. The church is also hosting a free breakfast at 9 a.m. For more on the choir, including a full concert schedule, visit www. watoto.com.

Living Intensely

leisure&lifestyles gardening

Intensity & Sensitivity of gifted learners featuring Dr. Lannie Kanevsky

The feelings of highly able students are often amplified so they experience events in their lives with greater intensity and sensitivity. These feelings are essential to their development. Understanding them and accepting their role in personal growth provides powerful insights on the ways in which they are similar to and different from others their age.

A time for new beginnings Gardeners can fix plantings too anne marrison

Green Room The new year is a time for new beginnings. For gardeners, this can be new plantings, new designs or sometimes figuring out how to undo a not-so-new planting you wish you’d never done in the first place. For instance, trees usually come with labels indicating how tall they’ll get. But you’re not always told how wide they’ll become. Some species produce low branches that block driveways and paths, lead to complaints from neighbours and prove difficult to garden under. But if you clue in early to approaching trouble, you can go out with loppers in fall or winter and highlimb those offending lower branches right back to the trunk. The trunk will grow and carry the remaining branches out of harm’s way. Hydro lines are another issue. Tree-loving gardeners who think ahead may decide they prefer to settle on the other side of the street. Also rural gardeners need to remember that squirrels plant black walnuts, hazels and acorns

wherever they want. Some of us love the look of Virginia Creeper winding its scarlet leaves high up in an evergreen tree. But it also puts out runners that extend to the ground and become quite a nuisance because they root wherever they touch. You can avoid this by cutting the main roots of Virginia Creeper to the ground every few years. They re-grow fast and by the second year the leaves are up in the tree again. Allowing Clematis montana or tall climbing roses to climb up a tree is also problematic. Both flower higher than you can see or pick and both favour the sunny side. The shorter climbers are much more manageable. Slopes are another issue. Terracing is by far the best approach, but it’s a lot of heavy work and even the shorter slopes may need to be handled by a professional. Installing proper drainage is a big issue with slopes. Even so, the longer, steeper slopes may tend to slip, especially in heavy rain. To help prevent this, some plants with deep and tenacious roots should be planted on slopes. Native shrubs such as salal, redstem dogwood, Pacific ninebark and Indian plum

have very deep roots. Groundcovers are also helpful on slopes because they stabilize at least the top layers of soil. But when they’re planted, they do need weeding, though less so as they get older and denser. Many perennials make good groundcovers, especially the epimediums and the cranesbills. Ivy does not. It has fairly shallow roots, climbs trees and becomes uncontrollable very fast. People planning new raised vegetable beds need to be careful in figuring out the width of paths. Ones destined to be grass need to be at least the width of the lawnmower. It helps if the longer paths can accommodate a wheelbarrow. Very narrow paths are great space-savers but best paved. Many vegetables grow fine in 30 cm of soil, but if you’re going to grow deep-rooted crops (such as parsnips), a raised bed 40 cm deep gives you more flexibility. Now as we each face our own new beginnings in 2015, I wish you all a happy, healthy new year — and joyous gardening. Anne Marrison is happy to answer garden questions. Send them via amarrison@ shaw.ca. It helps me if you can add the name of your town or region.

House Party ushers in new year

South Delta Minor Hockey’s annual tournament was once again a success on and off the ice South Delta Minor Hockey’s 11th annual Party In Da House Tournament featured plenty of excitement on and off the ice. The unique all-South Delta event brought together 21 recreational level teams from the association and over 300 players to do battle in four divisions — Atom, Pee Wee, Bantam and Midget. At stake was not only local bragging rights but the opportunity to represent South Delta in the Delta Cup finals against the top teams from the North Delta Minor Hockey Association. After a couple of seasons in the works, since B.C. Hockey banned all body checking at the recreational

level, a girls team was allowed to compete in the Pee Wee Division. The girls more than held their own, finishing with a very competitive 1-2 record. Championship Sunday at the Ladner Leisure Centre concluded with a thriller as the Chiefs edged the Awesome 2-1 in a shootout to capture the Midget Division. The Bantam final also went down to the wire with the Outlaws slipping past the Jets 2-1. The Avalanche claimed the Pee Wee title with a 4-1 win against the Thrashers. The Titans are Atom division champions after a hard-earned 3-2 win over the Bengals.

Once again, the South Delta Food Bank was a big winner as the Team Challenge brought in over 1,200 pounds in donations. Leading the way was the Pee Wee C5 team with 450 pounds on its own. Led by the efforts of Phil

Pacaud and Sean Johnson, the tournament would not have been such a success without all the volunteers who stepped forward to give their valuable time during the busy holiday season. The organizing committee also thanks the many local

business for their sponsorship and donations. The association is now busy planning for its next big event in partnership with Delta Parks and Recreation — Hockey Day in South Delta — slated for Saturday, Feb. 14.

Win streak stopped at three for shorthanded Ice Hawks Injuries and suspensions finally caught up to the Delta Ice Hawks on Tuesday night. Playing without six regulars, the Ice Hawks saw their three-game win streak snapped in a 6-3 home ice loss to the Langley Knights. With captain David Rudin already on the injury shelf, the Hawks line-up took another hit thanks to the aftermath of a brawl

in last Friday’s 3-1 road win over the Abbotsford Pilots. Cam Cuthbert, Zak Stepaniuk and Alex McKenzie each received two game suspensions for their involvement, while veteran Evan Grannary was given four games. They joined Spencer Schoen who was finishing a three-game suspension for a his boarding major in a win over Aldergrove back on Dec. 23.

To fill out their roster, the Hawks dressed five APs — Isaac Embree, Nick Wicks and Sam Kozlowski from the U18 Delta Wild, along with Midget AAA players AJ Warn and Erik Olson. The Knights broke a tight game with a big second period to open up a 4-1 lead. Wicks managed the only Delta goal, from Greg Scott and Kozlowski. Olson pulled the hosts

within two before Langley put the game away with three more unanswered goals. Mark Trotman had the other Ice Hawk goal. Delta did manage a 5-4 win over Port Moody last Saturday night. Newly acquired goalie Tyler Read made 28 saves. The 20-year-old from White Rock was dealt by Ridge Meadows for future considerations.

Falcons Field Hockey has been running an indoor program at the South Delta Recreation Centre.

Falcons Field Hockey taking their game to school gyms The Falcons Field Hockey Club is launching an indoor program this month at a pair of Tsawwassen elementary schools. With the assistance of Field Hockey B.C. and the club’s junior boys coordinator Corina Ursu, the Falcons have created a program that will introduce the sport to students 12 and under at Cliff Drive and Peeble Hill schools. The sessions will be incorporated as part of the daily physical education program and will give kids a chance to try the sport in a gym environment for the first time. It’s the club’s hope the school program will help field hockey grow in Delta and give kids a chance to excel early on. Homegrown standouts who play indoor hockey as well as outdoor at the national

level include Sara McManus, Krista Jensen, Cailean Meredith and Mark Pearson. Indoor field hockey is played in many European countries as a way to continue year round without weather disruptions. The game is fast, fluid and very fun to play at all ages. The Falcons have previously introduced the indoor program at the South Delta Recreation Centre for the past three years with much success and is offering it again to help extend the short junior spring season for girls and boys 12 and under. Registration is currently open for the indoor field hockey program now on the www.deltareg.ca website. For more information on the club and the programs offered year round visit www.falcons.ca.

2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014.

On August 14, 2014, we asked for the Fraser Elliot group to come to our home and not only give us a free evaluation of the value but more importantly to us was what they would do to increase we had our home on the market with a different realtor for 5 months and in the last 2 months it had only been shown once per month and we felt this was not adequate. After hearing of the many forms of advertising and exposure to the market, how they would pay a stager to meet with us and tell us the best way to use existing furniture and space to make the home more appealing we were impressed and then discussed pictures and virtual tours. The pictures and virtual tour were amazing and obviously done by a professional. After seeing them on line both my wife and I jokingly agreed if we did not already own the home, we would buy it.We signed a listing agreement that same day.Since that time we have had 11 showings, and 2 offers to purchase. The has resulted in the sale of our home on September 22, 2014.Immediately after each and every showing we received a follow up call from which ever member of the team showed the home with information on how the showing went, this was much appreciated and did not leave us in the dark wondering about feedback.Any phone calls we made to the team were either answered in person or returned within 5 minutes. The home they sold for us was a single family dwelling and we still own a condo that without a doubt will be listed by the Fraser Elliot Group should they want it at the time. The service was unbelievable, professional and we would recommend the Fraser Elliot Group to anyone wanting to buy or sell a home. - Ken and Jocelyn Pike

We had excellent service from the Fraser Elliott team with our recent house sale. We would particularly like to recognize the expertise and advice provided by the team as well as the effective advertising. Thank you! - John Higenbottam Thanks for all of the showings and work you did to sell the place. We won't hesitate to recommend you to our friends and family. - Mike Carston & Leslie Valair

We wanted to thank you for all your efforts in selling our home here in Ladner. There were a number of points that really stood out for us through the whole process. · Team work ? there was a real sense of team work among all the staff at Fraser Elliott Remax. We felt everyone was working toward the common goal of selling our house in an effective manner and for the desired price. · Communication ? throughout the sales process there was clear and consistent communication provided to us including interest in the house, potential opportunities, and the current state of the Ladner housing market. This was critical in establishing and maintaining trust throughout the sales process. · Relevant advise ? there were a many times where advice was offered but it was done in a manner whereby the reasons for the advice were clearly articulated, but ourselves to make without any pressure. us feel Fraser Elliott Remax had our best interests at heart. · Marketing strategy ? we really appreciated your use of leading edge strategies to market our home, particular your use of social media. We really felt our home was being exposed to many potential buyers that perhaps traditional marketing methods would never have reached. It also showed the commitment of Fraser Elliot Remax to invest money in marketing our house. In summary, we really enjoyed our experience working with Fraser Elliott Remax and would have no hesitation in recommending the company to anyone interested in buying or selling a home. As you know, we have now asked you to be our realtors as we look for our new home - Graeme and Veronique Byrne

When we made the discussion to sell our home we had a number of real estate agents in mind, we decided to start with Fraser Elliott to do an evaluation on our home and discuss the marketing process, on completion of the discussion we determined there was no need to discuss our home sale with other real estate agents. The home preparation and marketing was above and beyond our expectations, throughout the listing and showing process they were always in communication with us. The Fraser Elliott Real Estate Group are truly professionals when it comes to real estate business and are No. 1 for good reason. Would not hesitate to call upon their services in the future and highly recommend them to anyone looking to sell of purchase real estate.!

To all the staff at Fraser Elliott Group, The one word that seems to exemplify your company is enthusiasm, from each of the staff that had anything to do with the sale, each of you showed such enthusiasm and gave us such support, you have no idea who much that had been lacking from previous efforts.Another word is professionalism, every detail was handled with such a competence and professionalism, the staging advice, the incredible photography even the impressive wording on the

Here are just some of our many testimonials we've received from our recent clients. Over the past few months I have had the pleasure of dealing with the Fraser Elliott Group. My mother's condo had been on the market for 18 months with two separate realtors. We had taken the suggestions of the last realtor and had the place completely painted with a neutral pallet but alas, it sat empty for the next few months with only a couple of showings. I had hesitated in calling Fraser Elliott Group because in all honesty, they had so many listings and I didn't think they would pay much attention to call them and was pleasantly surprised. Their professionalism, track record and assurance that mom's condo was just as important as any listing they had as well as their explanation of their unique marketing strategies made me we accepted an offer on the condo, fairly close to list price (which was the same price as the previous realtor had listed it). Unfortunately before subjects were removed, the deal fell through however, Fraser Elliott Group had another offer quickly and the condo sold close to list price. The condo was basically sold in just over a month with this group in a market that, we decided to sell our family home. There was a lot of sentiment involved in the decision as it is the home my father built. in 1968 with pride and love. We bought the home from my mom 15 years ago after my dad passed away and happily raised our children there. When Fraser and Garrett came to see us I expressed that I did not want to sell to someone who was going to tear it down and it was important that the people who buy the house loves it as much as we have. They didn't make me feel silly, in fact I believe they empathized with how I must be feeling. The interest was overwhelming once listed. The drive by's and showings were numerous and the house sold within 6 days to the perfect young couple who look at the home as theirs for the next 40 years. Presently my daughter is using Fraser Elliott Groups buyers She has been wonderful and patient with our involved all the way on the side lines and Jennifer could have easily deferred to me a number of times, but is dealing directly with our daughter teaching and walking her through this monumental step in her life. Fraser Elliott's team has been so professional, patient and understanding. They've explained who they are, how they market and walked us through every stage giving us sound advice every step of the way. They provided a consult with a stager for hints to make the house look better for pictures and showings; there was plenty of notice given for showings; the photographer was professional and quick with an awesome results; the person that came in to take accurate measurements of house and property Elliott Group is #3 in the world. The team is so professional and so on the ball. They take all of your comments and concerns to heart , offer their client. I highly recommend their services. In my opinion and having dealt with a number of realtors recently, they are the best out there.

- Janelle Clegg

Our home had een on the market for two years with little success when we resolved to contact Fraser Elliot and his group in order to market the property. What attracted us initially and what we wanted to take advantage of, was Fraser's comprehensive marketing plan. What we didn’t expect was was the quality of the professionals in his group that handled all aspects of marketing and sale. The service they delivered was thorough, timely and effective. Above all, the service felt personal. Our home was SOLD within two months of listing at a price point we were very comfortable with. Perfect! - Peter Woeste Our experience working with the Fraser Elliott group on the sale of our home, was great. We really liked the team approach that they provided. Always someone at the your house. The showings were by appointment rather than open house which we really liked. We also really appreciated Kash (a stager) that they provided free of charge, to help us get the home ready for photos and staging. I’m not sure we would have thought of that ourselves and it really helped. We had extra furniture to move and the free loaner moving truck provided came in handy when moving it to a storage unit. The team of Garrett, Amber and Rachel who primarily showed our home were all great to deal with, friendly and personable, and the feedback they gave us after viewings, kept us positive. There were weekly updates and it really felt that the team was doing everything they could, to ensure our house got the exposure needed and the right buyer was found. Thank you to every member of the Fraser Elliott Group!! - Rosalind Cleroux

I could tell right away that Fraser heavily invests in selling your product, from advertising material, videos, photography, facebook, newspapers, web presence and he even sent a complimentary stager to re-arrange my home to maximise our selling potential. I don’t know why you wouldn’t use Fraser Elliott to sell your home. - Ian

I am beyond thrilled and relieved. Thank you and your team for all the hard work and effort you put into the selling of my home and the purchase of the condo. You are the best!! - Brenda Swinglehurst Thank you so very much for all your hard dedicated work in selling my mom’s house. We appreciate SO much everything you did and how hard you worked to sell the house...we will HIGHLY recommend you in the future!! - Diane DeMille and family

- John and Shirley Jaye

Working with Fraser, and his amazing team, has been an all around great experience from day one. We had listed our house previously with a different agent and were not excited about the process of trying to sell our home again. We took their advice on pricing and any little changes we could do to make our home look its very best, and we were thrilled to accept a great offer within a few days, before it even hit MLS! We could not be happier with our decision to go with Fraser and his team and would highly recommend them to anyone buying or selling in the South Delta area. Thanks! - Ash and Laura Thomas
