It’s the biggest single-day event in the history of South Delta Minor Hockey and the entire country will be watching. The Ladner Leisure Centre will be the official West Coast location for Scotiabank Hockey Day in Canada tomorrow and the association has put together a jam-packed schedule on and off the ice. The day will kick off with a

Save-On-Foods-sponsored free pancake breakfast, live music and the grand re-opening of the newly renovated leisure centre. The parking lot will have a “Power of Sport” trade show that will showcase other sports available in the community. Former Vancouver Canucks goaltender Kirk McLean and a homegrown baseball star — Toronto Blue Jays prospect Tom Robson — will be dropping by for autograph sessions.

The South Delta Recreation Centre and Tilbury Arena will also host games and activities. All but three South Delta teams will be in action and every game will have “a big league” feel to it with live national anthems and rink announcers. The North Delta Minor Hockey Association will

be providing competition for the rep teams as well as some additional recreational level games. Produced by Rogers, the Scotiabank Hockey Day in Canada all-day broadcast on CBC will include live celebrations from Delta featuring Sportsnet Central host James Cybulski. The day will culminate with the Vancouver Canucks alumni taking

on the Delta police in Ladner at 7:15 p.m., with Delta Cable televising the game. “We developed (the event) and it has really grown from there,” said SDMHA organizer Phil Picaud. “We reached out to the Corporation of Delta and Rogers and they both loved it. We have also had some amazing sponsorship come on board. The community has really embraced it.” For a full list of activities, visit vancouverlocations.weebly.com.

South Delta might see a new rapid bus station and an expanded South Delta Exchange park and ride, but there’s no guarantee they’ll come to fruition even if a proposed tax hike is approved by the region’s voters. That was the warning by Mayor Lois Jackson at last week’s Delta council meeting, where the proposed 0.5 per cent “Metro Vancouver Congestion Improvement Tax” was discussed. Civic politicians had already agreed that Delta not take a formal position on the proposed tax, which will be put to voters in a mail-in referendum this spring. Instead, Delta staff outlined how information on the proposed tax and the series of potential regional transit improvements that could come about if it’s approved will be sent to Delta residents for feedback. A letter, which will include information on Delta’s own transportation initiatives, will be mailed with the 2015 utility rate notices. A report on the feedback will come to council at the end of March. A series of transit improvements under a vision released by the Mayors’ Council on Regional Transportation

There’s not too much for Delta in a 10-year, $7.5 billion transit and transportation plan devised by the region’s mayors. identified a few possible improvements for Delta. For South Delta, they include a rapid bus station at highways 99 and 17A, relocating and expanding the South Delta Exchange park and ride, increasing peak bus service on some routes and expanding HandyDart. Those improvements pale in comparison to the big-ticket items in the plan, which include light rapid transit along King George Boulevard in Surrey

transit improvements are needed to reduce congestion. The proposed 0.5 per cent hike to the sales tax is expected to generate $250 million annually, money that would be earmarked for transit improvements identified in a 10-year, $7.5-billion plan put together by the region’s mayors. Senior government funding would also be required. The tax is expected to cost $125 per year for the

average household. Mail-in ballots will go out beginning March 16. Eligible voters will have until May 29 to return them. * The Delta chapter of the Council of Canadians, which supports the proposed tax, is holding a presentation and discussion at the Ladner Pioneer Library on Thursday, Feb. 26 from 7 to 9 p.m. Transportation planner and author Eric Doherty will speak.

Local politicians agreed to ask the mayors’ council to send a representative to appear at the Feb. 16 Delta council meeting to clarify the situation. Tsawwassen’s Angela and Trevor Smith have been chosen as the winners of this year’s Cutest Couple Valentine’s Day Contest. We asked readers to send us a romantic photo with their sweetie along with a few words about the photo. Angela wrote: “Trevor and I have been a couple since 1987. We were teenagers when we met and now have teenagers of our own. After almost 28 years, we still love to spend as much time together as we can. We have recently taken up running as a hobby. This picture is from our recent 10K race held around the Vancouver waterfront. We believe a couple that plays together, stays together!” We put all the entries on our Facebook page and asked people to help us decide on a winner. The Smiths received the most support of all the couples. The couple has won dinner for two at The Primerose and a beautiful bouquet from Our Little Flower Company.

Malls taking shape for 2016 opening

Construction continues at Tsawwassen First Nation, although nothing new to report on the tenant front The mega-shopping centre that will change the face of retail in the Lower Mainland is steadily taking shape at the Tsawwassen First Nation. Located at the northwest corner of Highway 17 and 52nd Street, Ivanhoé Cambridge’s Tsawwassen Mills will include 1.2 million square feet of retail, while the adjacent Tsawwassen Commons, a Property Development Group project also under construction, will have 550,000-square-feet of outdoor retail. Both are scheduled to open in May of next year. A spokesperson for Tsawwassen Mills said in the next few months construction will include structural steel work con-

tinuing from the east side of the building to the west side, installation of exterior walls, installation of the roof, which will include energy-efficient skylights, and installation of underground utilities. Tsawwassen Mills is expected to have 16 anchor stores, a mix of premium fashion brands and factory outlets as well as a 1,100seat food court. The mall is modeled on the successful CrossIron Mills in Calgary and Vaughan Mills in Greater Toronto. The first Bass Pro Shops in B.C. is the only confirmed tenant thus far, but a Tsawwassen Mills spokesperson said more tenant announcements are expected in the coming months. Tsawwassen Commons will include a blend of national, regional and independent retailers, big-box

Mindy is described as the more dominant, confident cat of the two. We feel that she would be ok in a home with another submissive cat. We don’t think Mindy has had much interaction with children so she would probably do best in an adult only home or with older children. She enjoys attention but is somewhat shy here at the shelter. We feel her personality will show more once she is in a home atmosphere. Mindy is hanging out at our Tsawwassen store, come on in and visit her.

PDG Investments is managing the leasing of its project with FORM Retail Advisors, a Vancouver-based retail broker. Tsawwassen Commons’ only announced tenants thus far are Walmart and

Rona, however the project is already 50 per cent preleased, with 78 per cent of the retail area under letter of intent or offers to lease, according to GVest Private Equity LP, which has come on board as a 50 per cent shareholder in the project. When completed,

Tsawwassen Mills and Tsawwassen Commons will combine to be the secondlargest shopping centre complex in B.C., slightly smaller in leaseable retail space than Metropolis Metrotown in Burnaby. Meanwhile, work continues on Highway 17

to widen the highway from east of 56th Street to Tsawwassen Drive. Upgrades are also being made at the 52nd Street and 56th Street intersections. As the roadwork continues, Delta is seeing what, if anything, can be done to alleviate noise concerns by residents across the highway in Imperial Village. Delta council recently discussed a petition asking for a berm to help block out the noise. Noting the highway comes under provincial jurisdiction, engineering director Steven Lan said staff has been in touch with the Ministry of Highways and TFN about the issue. “I have some empathy for people who suddenly find themselves next to a major project, but I don’t want to encourage them Delta can do anything and give them false hope,” said Mayor Lois Jackson.

South Delta business owners did some brainstorming last week to come up with ideas on how to adjust to life alongside the Tsawwassen First Nation’s mega malls. Long talked about but now moving closer to reality for local businesses, it’s difficult not to notice the construction taking place at the TFN, where the two malls, totaling 1.8 million square feet, are scheduled to open in May of next year. Late last year, Delta council hired a consultant to work with the business community to devise strategies to deal with the changing retail landscape as well as explore what Delta can do to help. That report, to be finalized in the coming weeks, will be called the South Delta Business Sustainability Strategy. Delta staff helped facilitate a meeting last Tuesday night between the consultant and Ladner business and property owners, followed by a similar forum with Tsawwassen stakeholders the next night. The consultant provided an overview before the participants took part in group discussions to explore a number of ideas they’d like to see implemented. Longtime Ladner Business Association member Bill McKnight, owner of South Coast Casuals, said it was a productive meeting with a number of good ideas, including streetscape and building beautification, but better signage seemed to be top of mind for most who participated. McKnight said if there

Local merchants will soon have to deal with Tsawwassen Mills, which, along with Tsawwassen Commons, is being constructed at the Tsawwassen First Nation. are highway signs directing people to the TFN shopping centres, the same should be available for the Ladner and Tsawwassen business communities. “At the end of the night there were seven different ideas from seven different tables, all very valid ones. The one thread that ran through everything was increased signage, showing people that these two viable opportunities are here for shoppers,” he said. As far as what a sign should say about his community, McKnight said he’s not a fan of the word “historic” for Ladner, noting it gives the impression the business district is old and not vibrant. Tsawwassen Business Improvement Association president Randy Scott also said a number of good ideas came forward at his meeting, but reiterated those ideas need to be backed by a commitment from Delta to refresh the look of the commercial districts. Scott agreed signage would also play a critical role. “Who’s going to pay for a sign at the entrance to Tsawwassen? Is that going

to be all up to us?” he asked. Scott added Delta also needs to do more to streamline its red tape to help property owners redevelop. “You have to jump through hoops to try to get a building permit and even when you get the permit, the cost of the permits are big... they make things very difficult.” Scott noted the Tsawwassen Area Plan needs to make it more viable for someone to even want to redevelop because there’s currently no incentive. Saying the meetings were extremely productive, with no vetoing of ideas, Sean McGill, Delta’s director of corporate planning, noted the consultant would discuss the feedback with the partner groups before coming up with recommendations. Ivanhoe Cambridge and Property Development Group are behind the malls, located on 180 acres of TFN land just off Highway 17 at 52nd Street. Ivanhoe Cambridge’s project will have 1.2 million square feet of destination retail and entertainment.

Called Tsawwassen Mills, it will follow the model of the CrossIron Mills mall north of Calgary and Vaughan Mills north of Toronto. Property Development Group is developing an adjacent outdoor mall comprising 550,000 square feet called Tsawwassen Commons.

It was all about kittens at Holly Elementary on Wednesday. Students at the East Ladner school attended a fun-filled noon assembly in the gym for the Tiny Kittens Fundraiser. It included a presentation by the grades 3 and 4 students who last fall embarked on a series of activities for the Langley Animal Protection Society. The students had informally adopted a pregnant black cat named Dorothy that was under foster care. The cat gave birth to six cute kittens that recently found forever homes. Shelly Roche, founder of TinyKittens.com, was the foster mom, running a 24/7 Livestream feed from her home in Fort Langley that

society were on hand at Wednesday’s assembly to watch the presentations and hear from Tyler, whose students took on the role of helping Dorothy. The event featured a slideshow, songs and well-rehearsed skit by the students for the rest of the school as well as parents. Tyler’s students talked about their activities, including a field trip, which was described as amazing. Thanking them for their hard work and calling them passionate learners, Tyler had her students, as well as their kindergarten buddies, line up and take a bow. Also thanking the staff and community, she described it as an amazing learning experience. Staff was to do a final tally of the fundraiser later in the day, an amount that was expected to exceed $1,000.

TED MURPHY

MURPHY’S LAW Tap into the influx. When the two mega malls at the Tsawwassen First Nation open their doors in the spring of next year, shoppers will flock to these parts like never before. Tsawwassen Mills, the larger of the two at 1.2 million square feet, isn’t going to be your ordinary suburban shopping mall. Not only will it be considerably bigger than most, it’s being positioned in the marketplace as a “destination” mall, one that will attract shoppers from throughout the region and beyond. Walmart, which will be one of the anchors in the adjacent Tsawwassen Commons, is counting on Tsawwassen Mills’ drawing power as there’s no way the retail giant would build a store in South Delta if it had to rely solely on the local population. It believes a certain percentage of shoppers searching for fashion bargains will also make their way next door for housewares, electronics and a host of other items. Given Walmart has had a bit of success in the retailing game, I’m apt to agree with that school of thought, but the bigger question around here is does that spin-off also translate into more shoppers in the commercial cores of Tsawwassen and Ladner? For the sake of our local merchants, I certainly hope so, but I have to wonder if the malls’ coattails will extend much beyond the land on which they’re constructed. The idea of increased signage to promote other shopping opportunities is definitely worth pursuing, but the malls’ convenient highway access is going to be a big deterrent to spill over as it will be far too easy for shoppers to bypass the surrounding area. Those that frequent a destination mall like Tsawwassen Mills are a little different breed from your run-of-the-mill shopper in that they come from further away, stay longer and spend more. They are there for a specific purpose, so getting them to go somewhere else isn’t necessarily an easy task. Tsawwassen already has a significant amount of through traffic, but is there much bump to the local economy from the millions of vehicles that use the ferry terminal each year? What about from the parade of taillights headed to Point Roberts to fill up the tank or pick up online purchases? I suspect there has to be some spin-off from having all those visitors come to town, but building a rapport with those that live here is far more important. And I imagine that will continue to be the case even after TFN’s mega malls change South Delta’s retail landscape forever.

Passionate volunteers are the backbone of our community DOUG HUSBAND

COMMUNITY COMMENT While travelling to and from Ladner via Highway 10, I noticed the Corporation of Delta advertising for volunteers for council committees. Having grown up in a family that believed in volunteering, it gave me pause to reflect on their contributions and the opportunity for others to join the legion of residents who offer time and expertise to their community. We’re influenced greatly by our family environment, without conscious awareness. I can recall growing up in a busy household with both parents working full time. They were also very community minded, volunteering with service clubs, historical committees, educational and health organizations, and at their place of worship. Safe to say, none of that rubbed off on a self-absorbed youngster. But in some way, that community grounding is absorbed, and like my experience, there are many

examples of generations of families contributing to a liveable community. The Corporation of Delta has need for public input in such areas as design and planning, parks and recreation, heritage, and traffic and safety. Anyone willing to volunteer on these committees has a chance of influencing staff recommendations and council’s decisions. Delta council has a history of working well with volunteer organizations and societies on capital projects. These partnerships have resulted, in recent times, in the Boys and Girls Club clubhouse, McKee Seniors’ Recreation Centre, Delta Sport Development Centre, the Little House, and Delta Hospice’s Harold and Veronica Savage Centre for Supportive Care and Irene Thomas Hospice. At the risk of offending many deserving folks, I offer kudos to Leslie Abramson, Carlene Lewall, Jim Stimson and Nancy Macey, to name but a few examples as driving forces behind these projects. And, yes, I know only one mentioned is a pure volunteer, although all had many volunteer supporters. Without their passion and sense of purpose, many of these and other facilities would not be in use today. While on these examples, let’s not forget the multitude of businesses, corporations and volunteers

that made these examples happen because without the millions of dollars generously contributed and services and materials given, there would be no success stories. And speaking of that, in my estimation the best example of Delta and volunteers working successfully together is the Kirkland House. The original home of the historic Kirkland family — John Kirkland and John W. Kirkland were reeves in Delta for a combined total of 17 years — the substantial Victorianstyle house was in danger of demolition 40 years ago. Long unoccupied and deteriorating, and owned by the Genstar development company, the Corporation of Delta arranged a transfer of ownership with a parcel of land. Led by volunteers Colin Campbell and Matt Rogers as well as numerous valued locals, they have spent countless years renovating and restoring the crumbling structure and grounds into a highly successful community asset that hosts weddings and numerous events annually. Safe to say, everyone’s contribution helps build a better community. Anyone wishing an opportunity to offer time and skills will find an organization or service club to their liking. And a good night to you, Judy.

Opposition committee is one heck of a good idea

Editor: Re: Opposition tilling ground that government already working, Community Comment, Feb. 6 Mike Schneider belittles the opposition committee on agriculture and food because it “will not be able to make any policy decisions.” Well, by gosh, he’s right: because no committee can make policy decisions. Then he says that food shouldn’t be turned into a political issue. Poppycock: food is as political an issue as you can get in this province, especially when government splits the ALR into two zones and unilaterally allows non-farm uses on Zone II land. That legislation met with almost universal opposition and was nothing if not political.

He then asserts that a committee on agriculture is meaningless, given the minister already has an industry advisory committee. That is one of the problems we have with this government: it listens to no one but industry. I agree wholeheartedly that professional advice is critical, but that doesn’t mean the people or their elected representatives have no right to an opinion — or to be heard — on the major issues of the day. And I personally believe the sustainability of agriculture, the protection of agricultural land and B.C.’s food security are pretty important issues. B.C.’s legislature has no standing committee on agriculture and the standing committees on environment,

New unisex salon is one-stop shop

The co-owners of H2 Hair Studio & Tan describe their business as a one-stop shop for hair. “We’re family friendly,” says Lanita Mesotopitis, noting the Ladner shop is unisex. Mesotopitis, who has 20 years of experience in the industry, is a classically

trained barber and Gena Lays is a hairdresser who does men’s hair as well. “Gena is excellent with colour,” says Mesotopitis. The shop opened last month.

Lays, who has the better part of a decade of experience, says the business has great prices for its services. H2 Hair Studio & Tan has three stand-up tanning beds and one lay-down bed.

The salon is located at 5150 Ladner Trunk Rd. in Ladner Centre. It can be reached at 604-946-0985 or find it on Facebook at www.facebook.com/h2stuido. Lays notes they plan on having special promotions online for those who follow the Facebook page.

B.C. Hydro recently installed bird diverters on a power line along Ladner Trunk Road. They are installed five to 10 metres apart.

Bird diverters put an end to outages on Trunk Road line Power outages caused by swans flying into a power line in East Delta have been eliminated thanks to work by B.C. Hydro crews. In December and January, B.C. Hydro recorded eight momentary power outages due to an issue with a power line that serves more than 2,400 customers and runs along Ladner Trunk Road between

ing directly into the power line, causing the line to “kick-out” momentarily. B.C. Hydro crews worked with a wildlife biologist to install bird diverters on the line. Hydro crews determined they were being caused by a large flock of birds. The birds were regularly feeding in farm fields nearby and when they flew off at dusk, some were fly-

Opportunities for grace No snow! How can that be! It’s still February and the North Shore mountains should be sporting white peaks or at least that’s the expectation, isn’t it? At least visually it invites the possibility of a taste of winter. Then there is also the environmental concern of the possible lack of water from snowmelt through a long spring/summer season. But when it causes disruption to long hours of planning and preparing for a ski program with my daughter’s school class, that’s pushing the limits; the program change (from four days to two, from Mount Seymour to Blackcomb, from relatively simple support for my child with special needs to a more complex support program), all because of no snow on our local mountains, could cause

some to see a series of dashed expectations. The teachers who organized and then re-organized the program did a wonderful job, putting in many extra hours of arranging the new approach and attending to individual needs of all the students. Thank you, teachers, it was a great day and most of all my daughter loved it. Wouldn’t it be great if our first response to such shifting and changing realities could be seen as opportunities for grace. Perhaps our inner prayer could be: “Thank you for each new day and the strength to face what comes our way.” It’s Friday the 13th today... are you worried and on the edge of dashed expectations or open to the opportunities for grace to unfold?

breath sample was requested. This request was made four times with the suspect refusing to provide the sample despite being told the consequences. As a result, the suspect was served a 90-day roadside suspension for refusal to provide a breath sample and a violation ticket. The suspect’s driver’s licence seized and his vehicle impounded. • Feb. 8, 1 a.m.: Complainant reported that while he was out for the evening someone had opened the laundry room window and entered the residence. The suspects stole an iPhone and jewelry and then left through the rear kitchen door. The scene was examined for forensic examination. Information regarding the iPhone added to the police database. Ladner • Feb. 2, 1:05 a.m.: Complaint received of a car alarm going off every few minutes. Police located the owner of the offending vehicle who had slept through the alarm that was faulty and armed by mistake. Police issued the owner of the vehicle a noise control bylaw ticket. • Feb. 2, 5:45 p.m., 4100block of Deltaport Way: The owner of a commercial vehicle reported that while he was stopped in traffic on the roadway his vehicle was surrounded by protesters who cut the air supply

lines between his truck and trailer. There were no witnesses to the event. Repairs were made on scene and the vehicle was driven away.

• Feb. 3, 9:42 p.m.: Complainant reported his landlord was angry at him for leaving tire marks on the grass near the driveway and had grabbed him by the neck. The two parties continued to tussle with each other until separated by the landlord’s wife. The fight was consensual with no injuries or independent witnesses. As the ongoing situation is a civil issue, the parties were advised to deal with the Landlord Tenancy Branch. • Feb. 4, 12:16 a.m.: Manager reported a customer at the drive-thru was upset and causing a disturbance. The customer had been given his drink and was unhappy when asked to wait for his food in the waiting stall. When the manager realized the male was a known problematic customer, he had the server offer the customer a refund. As a result the customer threw his drink at the server, yelled obscenities and left the area. Area patrol by police proved negative and the manager and server were advised to call police should the male return.

• Feb. 4, 3:28 p.m.: Complainant reported he had received a call from their tenant requesting his wife move her vehicle in order for the tenant to leave in her truck. Before his wife could move her vehicle, the tenant had pushed the vehicle to the end of the driveway with her truck, causing minor damage to the front bumper and grill of his wife’s vehicle. The tenant was gone when police arrived. Police to locate the suspect and possibly lay charges. • Feb. 5, 4:30 p.m.: A business reported they were receiving nonstop phone calls. Approximately 50 calls displaying “blocked” or “Ontario” were received over a period of five hours. The business answered one call and spoke to a male who was looking for a former employee. The caller became increasingly angry when told the person is no longer in the employ of the business. Police contacted the former employee who indicated she is being stalked by the male in India through Facebook. Police viewed the suspect’s Facebook page and found many pictures of the former employee. The employee has received no threats of violence but finds the calls disturbing. Telus traced the call and police spoke with the suspect. The situation is still under investigation.

Are you passionate about Delta’s history and heritage? What to learn more? The Delta Museum and Archives has a host of exhibits and activities to mark Heritage Week. Exhibits • What is Main Street? — This exhibit draws from previous museum exhibits celebrating various “Main Streets” in Delta. Why is there an actual Main Street in the Sunbury area? Is Main Street an idea or a reality? Showing Feb. 14 to 21 at the North Delta Recreation Centre, 11415-84th Ave. • Along Main Street — Around Delta, there were many businesses that had a long history of serving the community. This exhibit showcases artifacts from the Delta Museum and Archives Society collection that remind us of the pioneer businesses frequented on a trip “downtown.” Showing Feb. 16 to 20 at municipal hall, 4400 Clarence Taylor Crescent. • Curating the Museum — While many people see

the exhibits as the public side of the museum, there is much that goes on behind the scenes. This interactive exhibit provides visitors a chance to experience the work of a curator. Watch for special events that will address particular skills that can be applied to treasured home possessions. Showing Feb. 10 to March 13 at the Delta Museum, 4858 Delta St. • Main Street: At the Heart of the Community — Delta is made up of multiple similar, yet unique communities, each with different hubs of economic and social activity. This exhibit displays photographs that portray interesting areas of activity in Delta’s communities throughout its storied past. Showing Feb. 16 to 27 at the Delta Archives, 4450 Clarence Taylor Crescent. Presentations • The Lower Fraser River: Delta’s Ecological History — Renowned naturalist and author Anne Murray will share a slide show and stories of the natural history

of the unique lower Fraser River landscape and its abundant wildlife. Scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 18 at the Delta Museum and Archives Annex, 4918 Delta St., from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Fee: $10 per person donation to Delta Museum and Archives. • Preserving your Family Records — Do you have boxes of old photos or documents in your attic or basement? Are you interested in learning how to preserve these precious records of your family’s heritage? Join the Delta Museum and Archives archivist for this informative workshop and learn how to preserve and store your family’s paper and photographic records. Workshop scheduled for Friday, Feb. 20 at the Delta Archives, 4450 Clarence Taylor Crescent, from 1 to 3 p.m. Class fee: $10 per person. Pre-registration is required for both presentations. Cammidge House event celebrates Main Street

Towns and cities from coast to coast will celebrate Main Street — Heart of the Community, which has been selected by the Heritage Council of Canada as the theme for this year’s Heritage Week. Delta is no exception as the Boundary Bay Park Association Cammidge House Committee hosts a celebratory event on Sunday, Feb. 22 between 1 and 4 p.m. Stepping inside the century-old Cammidge House, South Delta residents will learn from educational displays setting out the early days of the main streets of Ladner and Tsawwassen and how progress has developed and enhanced services and lifestyle. “We all know where our main streets are located as they have traditionally been

the centre for our social, cultural and economic activity of the community,” says committee chairman Geof Hacker. “Our main streets are the core, they really tell us who we are, who we were and how the past has shaped the community.” As Delta developed after being incorporated in 1879, communities within the new municipality soon established a gathering place or main street where residents could worship, celebrate, trade and discuss how their area should be governed. William H. Ladner arrived in Delta in 1868 and acquired 640 acres on which the town of Ladner was built. This early settler provided a right-of-way through his property so a road could be built along the slough.

Subsequently branching out from Ladner, Tsawwassen began to be developed and the reality of farms raising cattle and horses along Point Roberts Road — 56th Street of today — or memories of the customs house at the corner of 12th Avenue became obliterated with progress. Hacker says he hopes many residents will attend Heritage Day at Cammidge House in Boundary Bay Regional Park. There is no charge and refreshments will be served by committee volunteers in period costume. There will also be vintage cars parked on the concourse as well as the handiwork of the Boundary Bay Quilters. Saturday goes to seed BY

A garden tool sharpener will be at the event too. Seedy Saturday and Garden Expo is set for Saturday, Feb. 21 and Sunday, Feb. 22 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Harris Barn, 4140 Arthur Dr., Ladner. Admission is by donation. For more information visit www.ladnercommunitygarden.blogspot.com. Sponsors include Vancity, West Coast Seeds, Windset Farms and the Corporation of Delta.

The local Seedy Saturday and Garden Expo is back this year with some changes. The Ladner Community Garden has partnered with the Corporation of Delta to present the now two-day event and the Harris Barn in Ladner will serve as its new location. “It’s beautiful inside,” says Kristin Crouch, president of the Ladner Community Garden Society. The local event, now in its fourth year, is scheduled to take place next weekend and will feature a seed swap, guest speakers and garden vendors. “There’s a real mix. It’s not just all seeds,” says Crouch. Guest speakers include Brian Minter and Thomas Hobbs. Minter, who will also bring plants from his garden centre to sell, is set to talk about food gardening, says Crouch. “That’s where the trend is going,” she says. Hobbs owns Southlands Nursery in Vancouver and has written numerous garden books, including Shocking Beauty and The Jewel Box Garden. He also appears on Global TV for gardening segments.

Kristin Crouch (left) and Lynn Dick, one of the directors at the community garden. The Ladner Community Garden presents Seedy Saturday and Garden Expo next weekend at Harris Barn.

There is a wait list for vendors, says Crouch, noting some are coming from as far away as Kamloops and Comox this year. Plants, garden tools and plant watering systems are

some examples of what will be for sale, she says. Crouch says the seed swap was very busy at last year’s event. It’s encouraged that open pollinated seeds be brought.

Artists gathering Artists in the Village Society hosts its first artists’ gathering later this month in Ladner. Local business and life coach Kristine Irving will be speaking. She will share the “human metamorphosis” we all experience as we transform through life’s opportunities, changes and transitions, the society’s website notes. “We will look specifically at the artist’s journey and determine which phase you are in,” the site states. “Are you just dipping your toe in the creative waters? Dreaming of what your life might look like as you immerse yourself deeper into being an artist? Struggling with a compare and despair attitude or frustrated that this is harder than expected? Or truly believing your dreams have come true but still feeling like you need to sleep with one eye open?” The meeting, set for Monday, Feb. 23 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Crow’s Nest Art Studio, 5038-47A Ave., Ladner, is free and nonmembers who are interested in learning more about the society are encouraged to attend. Those who plan on attending should email info@artistsinthevillage.com. For more on the new society, visit artistsinthevillage.com.

The event is a fundraiser for the Ladner Community Garden. Currently it funds a children’s program at the garden and the hope is in the future it will raise enough for the garden soci-

ety to offer a bursary to someone going into agriculture or horticulture. The Lions Club will have its Community Kitchen on site and there will be a vegan food truck as well.

Guest speaker schedule: Saturday • 10 a.m.: Brian Minter – The Secrets of Success with Food Gardening • 11:30 a.m.: Robyn Leake – Containers with Style • 12:30 p.m.: Darlene Tanaka – Canning for Beginners • 1:30 p.m.: Thomas Hobbs – From Hollywood to Green Acres Sunday • 10 a.m.: Kim Greenwood – Growing Vegetables in Containers • 11:30 a.m.: Botanus – Create a Summer Bulb Spectacular • 12:30 p.m.: Kim Greenwood – Gardening with Children • 2 p.m.: Don Bruchet – Seed Starting 101

ante Fe is rich with murmurs from the ancient past and to hear them you only have to visit Tsankawi, an unexcavated site that forms part of Bandelier National Monument. Here, once you’ve trekked up the dusty paths and slipped through the narrow channels of the hillside, you find yourself on a centuries-old path where the ancestral Pueblans once lived. The stones that formed walls of their homes have long since surrendered to gravity. But as you step cautiously around those fallen walls you hear the crunch of pottery beneath your feet, shards that formed parts of their cups and bowls 600 years ago, and that still bear the smoothness of their careful sculpting, the decor of their

precise hands. I couldn’t ask for a better guide than former archaeologist Janet McVickar, a guide with Adventure Partners at Four Seasons Rancho Encantado Resort in Santa Fe. She examines the shards that litter the path around us, pointing out hollows in the ground called kivas that were used for Pueblan religious ceremonies. “This here must have been the midden,” she says, gesturing towards an area where the soil is distinctly darker. “That’s where they’d clean out the ash from their fires.” To the naked eye the high desert around Santa Fe doesn’t hold out much hope for a hungry traveler. But those intimately familiar with this landscape know it’s rich not just in archaeological ruins, but also in edible plants. The pinion juniper woodland contains pinion pines known for

their pine nuts, blue grass glyphs on some of the rock with nourishing, edible faces and stair-like indentaseeds and juniper berries, tions that indicate how and all of which formed part of where the nimble-footed the ancestral Pueblans’ diet. One heart that clamoured loudly for Santa Fe belonged to Georgia O’Keeffe, one of the most lauded artists of the 20th century. To see why she fell in love with the landscape we head northwest towards Ghost Ranch, her home and inspiration from the 1940s until the ‘80s. We hike into an area she called the White Place, one of her painting spots distinguished by its massive sediment hoodoos and columnar mountains that nature has lined up with almost military precision. We walk through the dry valley, the shrill sound of cicadas in our ears and the dipping, diving whitethroated swifts our only companions. At peace in her own company, O’Keeffe found refuge in this landscape where shadows dance across the mountains and the rock colours range from whites to oranges, reds to browns.

On the 21,000-acre Ghost Ranch there are hiking and horseback trails and two small museums devoted to anthropology and paleontology. O’Keeffe’s home on the ranch is not open to the public and another property she owned in nearby Abiquiu offers tours by appointment only, to limited numbers and with strict rules. So visitors who want to learn more about O’Keeffe and what inspired her must content themselves with the impressive views and the vast, unlimited silence. Not much has changed out here over the years, and were O’Keeffe’s ghost to return, she’d likely be glad that murmurs from both the ancient and the more recent past still hang, almost audibly, in the New Mexico air. Perfect weather to plant hardy early vegetables

By Amy Dillon

Our winter weekend getaway to the new-and-improved Panorama Mountain Resort in southeast B.C. took us to the top of the world—and our itinerary will help you achieve great heights, too.

Time is right for garlic and arugula anne marrison

Green Room It may be unusually warm and too wet for February, but it remains perfect weather for planting hardy early vegetables. People who didn’t put garlic in the soil in fall have a great chance to plant it now and still get a decent crop by August. Garlic is so pungent nothing molests it in the garden during winter. But for shallots, spring planting is much safer in gardens where voles tunnel under the soil. The gardener wonders why the shallots aren’t growing and uncovers a row of shallot-shaped holes. Soil pests are one situation where containers are a more manageable situation for growing vegetables than the open garden. In early spring, containers set against a house wall also tend to be a warmer situation and are especially useful for salad crops. Arugula can be started any time now. It’s quite cold-hardy with leaves that taste spicy and nutty and really liven up salads. Once arugula plants get close to flowering and also once the weather becomes warmer, the flavour becomes very

hot. You can keep arugula going quite a while by frequent cutting. The kind called Wild Arugula is perennial. Green onions are ideal for container planting outside now. Their vertical growth habit allows you to get masses of salad material out of very small space. Corn salad can also be started in containers. It’s a cold-hardy shapely little plant when young with dark green, glossy leaves and a mild flavour. Once you plant one patch, you’ll have masses of seed for

There’s a variety called Granon that holds its leaves up away from the soil. It’s also time to plant radishes. The spring radishes are globe-shaped and very fast growing. They do appreciate rich soil and lots of water. Lots of gardeners come to grief with the radish bulb fly — row covers really help here — and all the more if the radishes are grown in containers. Used on top of containers, row covers can don’t get as

muddy and can be re-used for years. Spinach is hardy enough to be seeded outside now and this season keeping the seedbed adequately moist doesn’t look like any problem. The big need of spinach is nitrogen and as the weather gets warmer and lawn mowing starts, spinach does well growing among grass clippings to hold in moisture. If you always choose the outer leaves, you can keep harvesting spinach for a long time. The vegetables that really need to be started inside in February are winter leeks because they take a very long time to grow to transplantable size. These are very frost-hardy, usually dark green or purplish and larger and sturdier than the summer leeks. Leeks are transplanted in late April or May by being dropped into holes poked into the soil. This is also the time to plant broad beans. This is one crop (like peas) that leaves the soil better than it finds it because it fixes nitrogen from the air into root nodules that nourish other plants. These are best picked very young because the skin of broad beans gets very tough as they mature. Anne Marrison is happy to answer garden questions. Send them to her via amarrison@shaw.ca. How to keep life simple, joyful & fun Mandana Rastan, a national director and certified instructor with the Inner Peace Movement of Canada, is presenting a talk on trusting one’s intuition in Tsawwassen next week. During the talk participants will learn how to keep life simple, joyful and fun. They will experience the feeling of coming home to their inner wisdom and gain an understanding about their life purpose, the seven-year cycles of life and communication with their team of high souls. The session is set for Tuesday, Feb. 17 at 7:30 p.m. at the Coast Tsawwassen Inn. It lasts 90 minutes and admission is $21. The Inner Peace Movement of Canada, a non-profit educational program, helps people expand their potential through practical tools and techniques

for better living. It helps people communicate their message from the heart and contribute in a positive way to themselves, their community and their loved ones. Participants at next week’s talk will also hear about the four avenues of communication (psychic gifts) and will have an opportunity to sense their own energy and the energy field (aura) around others. Weekly group sessions, in the community, are available on an ongoing basis for those wanting deeper involvement. Rastan, an educator in the field of self-awareness, inspires people to believe in themselves and have more peace, balance, clarity, joy and fulfillment by being true to themselves. “You can overcome challenges with patience and tenacity, and reach

Mandana Rastan your goals,” says Rastan. “Instead of beating yourself up, you can acknowledge your accomplishments and enjoy being you. Act in the right timing to make the most of the present. Share your wisdom and do what you love.” For more information about the upcoming talk, visit www.innerpeacemovement.ca.

Red Nose offers thanks to army of volunteers Christmas memories are fading now but for a group of dedicated community volunteers, they were able to celebrate a job well done as drivers and dispatchers for the 13th annual Operation Red Nose campaign. The campaign ran for nine nights from late November to New Year’s Eve thanks to the help of an army of volunteers. “We had a total of 427 volunteers who drove one night, a few nights and some drove every night we offered the service,” said campaign coordinator Carlene Lewall. “Some of our volunteers are Delta Gymnastics par-

ents and staff, and many are community members who live in Delta, Richmond and beyond and want to help us out. They are all amazing and we are so thankful for their willingness to drive people home.” The Delta-Richmond campaign gave a total of 614 rides over the nine nights covering about 20,000 kilometres. While the service is provided free of charge, the party-goers getting a ride home in their own car usually tip. “We received a total of $19,000 from donations from our happy customers,” added Lewall. “Our volunteers always comment how extremely thankful people

month. “We had a lot of fun with an ORN Amazing Race team building/debriefing game and thanks to the generosity of our sponsors, this event does not cost us any-

thing,” said Lewall. “It’s our opportunity to recognize and thank all of those who helped us with this incredible community service.” All Operation Red Nose proceeds are directed to

Hawks soaring into the playoffs

Delta has rolled off four straight wins and can finish as high as third with a victory over Grandview It’s going to take the final game of the Pacific Junior Hockey League regular season to determine who the Delta Ice Hawks will face in the opening round of the playoffs just 48 hours later. The Ice Hawks have stretched the suspense to the very end thanks to a fourgame win streak that has them neck-and-neck with the Grandview Steelers for third place in the Tom Shaw Conference. Delta (22-190-2) pulled even with the Steelers after a 6-1 road victory at Aldergrove on Wednesday night. Grandview visits the first place North Vancouver Wolf Pack on Saturday, then returns to the Burnaby Winter Club on Sunday afternoon to host the Hawks. The Wolf Pack are on the verge of holding off the Richmond Sockeyes for conference and overall league honours. Regardless of where the Ice Hawks finish, they will take plenty of momentum into the post-season with wins over the league’s top three teams over the past week. After dispatching the Sockeyes 6-3 on Feb. 3, the locals received outstanding goaltending from

The strong play of 17-year-old rookie Andreas Siagris down the stretch is one of the reason the Delta Ice Hawks have rolled off four straight wins heading into their regular season finale on Sunday at Grandview. The playoffs start Tuesday in Ladner. Jacob Latrace in a 3-1 victory at North Vancouver on Saturday night. Goals by Spencer Schoen and Jake Fletcher gave the visitors a 2-0 lead after 40 minutes. The Wolf Pack finally solved Latrace but Mark Trotman restored the two

goal advantage with less than three minutes remaining. Latrace finished with 47 saves. Delta the cruised to an 8-5 win over the last place Port Moody Panthers on Tuesday night. Brent Chreptyk led the way with

a hat trick and one assist. Schoen also enjoyed a four point night, including three assists. Andreas Siagris continued his fine rookie season with three more points. Taylor Legard, Blake Hayward and Fletcher also scored.

The Hawks jumped out to a 4-1 lead after one period in Aldergrove and never looked back. Evan Grannary led the way with four goals, including a hat trick in the opening 20 minutes. The playoffs start Tuesday 7:35 p.m.in Ladner.

Rams invite girls to try their spring flag football program

WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 18

South Delta Rams Community Football Club is inviting girls to come out and try its growing flag football program. The non-tackle version of the sport has seen increased participation numbers in recent years. The spring flag season is just five weeks long — starting in April and running until late June. Typically, the U10 and U12 age divisions feature teams made up of

5:42 am 15.4 11:25 am 8.9 4:40 pm 14.4

boys and girls. The hope is, with increased interest, it will also be co-ed at the U14 and U16 levels as well. Helping promote the low contact sport is Karen Simpson, a local teacher and 20-year veteran of flag football. Simpson has seen the positive impact that team sports can have on girls; helping with self-confidence and providing a sense of belong-

ing. She also recognizes that as girls enter adulthood the number of options for continuing in team sports declines. “After playing with the Rams, the girls could continue to play with the Vancouver league which now has as many as 20 teams in three divisions,” explained Simpson. “Last spring, there were a small number of girls who registered at the older age level and they had a

great season. “This year, we are hoping for many more girls to sign up.” The Rams organization hopes that their initiative is a success and that the number of girls not only watching, but more importantly, playing flag football in South Delta will increase. Registration will open Feb. 21. For more information, visit the club’s website at sdramsfootball.com

Tsawwassen fencer wins gold for Canada Tsawwassen fencer Isaac Velestuk was a member of the gold medal winning Canadian men’s epee team at last weekend’s 2015 Junior-Cadet Pan American Championships in Scarborough, ON. The competition, which was the official test event for fencing at the 2015 Pan Am Games scheduled for this summer, saw over 300 athletes from 18 Pan American countries take part in the confederation championship in Cadet (U17) and Junior (U20). Canada took home a total of four gold, seven silver and eight bronze medals over the six-day competition. Canada faced rival USA in the the epee final and prevailed in a nail-biter, 45-42. Velestuk’s teammates included Marc-Antoine Blais-Belanger (Montreal), Dylan French (Richmond, BC) and Nicola Damjanovic (Toronto). Velestuk, 19, trains out of the Dynamo Fencing Club in Richmond under coach Victor Gantsevich. “Canada’s young fencers are doing extremely well and showing great promise for the future,” noted Brad Goldie, President of the Canadian Fencing Federation (CFF). “It has been a fantastic week of competition in the venue that will be host to fencing at the Pan Am Games this summer.”

Tsawwassen’s Isaac Velestuk (far left) with his coach and Canadian teammates after winning gold in the men’s epee team event at the 2015 Junior-Cadet Pan American Fencing Championships last week in Scarborough.

UBC features plenty of Delta softball talent

Thunderbirds open 2015 season today in California with Tsawwassen’s Gord Collings heading coaching staff again Gord Colllngs will again be counting on some homegrown talent as he enters his second season in charge of the UBC women’s softball team. The Tsawwassen resident took on the Thunderbirds’ top coaching position after a successful run at Douglas College. Prior to that, the longtime principal in the Delta School District enjoyed tremendous success with the Delta Heat rep “A” program. His lengthy resumé also includes guiding BC teams to gold medals at the 2013 Canada Summer Games at the 2011 Western Canada Games. On a team that leaned heavily on Ladner’s Alana Westerhof as one of its key

pitchers, UBC went 16-15 and advanced to the regional semi-finals in Collings’ firstyear at the helm. With Westerhof among four players lost to graduation, Collings has landed another Delta Secondary grad as part of his recruiting class — pitcher/ first baseman Zoe Gillis who comes from the powerful White Rock Renegades program. She follows the footsteps of her dad (Richard) and grandfather (Austin) who also attended UBC. Gillis spent time in the South Delta Invaders rep “B” program and with the Richmond Islanders before joining the Renegades.

WIN AN RV

“I have huge respect for coach Collings and really like the team environment and competitiveness. I think the Thunderbirds have great potential and I am very excited to be a part of it,” she said. Freshman Cherise Chang and Gillis make it four Delta players on the UBC roster — joining returnees Quinn Dhaliwal and Leanne Jung. Dhaliwal (Seaquam) will be a mainstay at second base after starting 30 of 31 games last season. Jung (Seaquam) will once again be sharing the catching duties with Margarita Sisen. Without a set league schedule, the TBirds will need to win enough games to

be chosen to participate in the six-team Association of Independent Institutions conference championship tournament April 30-May 2 in Lawrenceville, Ga. “The players are really working hard and playing well defensively,” says Collings. “I hope our hitting is more consistent than last year but I have no doubt our team can hit. We have some depth this year that we didn’t have last year.” Collings has a familiar face on his coaching staff. His daughter Paige Collings is working as a graduate assistant after an outstanding collegiate career at Drexel University in Philadelphia where she established several school records.
