Earthwise turning owls into TV stars

Nest cams can be viewed via closed circuit system in farm store BY

Earthwise Society is unveiling a new feature this weekend — Owl TV. Simon Fraser University researcher Sophie Hindmarch installed an owl nesting box in the Earthwise barn in 2010 and over the past few months a team of volunteers has been working with David Hancock of the Hancock Wildlife Foundation to assess the

box as well as set up cameras and a closed circuit TV system. The cameras are linked to a monitor in the new barn owl viewing centre in the Earthwise Farm Store where visitors can catch a glimpse of the resident barn owls from two different angles. The public can also assist staff with collecting data about the owls by contributing their observations to the daily log posted at the viewing centre.

“We think the female has been in the nesting box for approximately two weeks. She has only popped out occasionally to stretch her wings,” said one member of the volunteer team. The Hancock Wildlife Foundation uses live feeds to educate the public about the importance of preserving nesting sites. Hancock is well known for his live eagle nest cams. See OWLS page 3

THANK YOU

Delta Residents

Since 1977 your generosity has enabled us to support the residents of Mountain View Manor. (Located at the rear of Delta Hospital) The Delta Hospital Auxiliary will be providing $95,000 in funding for 2015, as well as an army of volunteers, for Mountain View Manor. The funding covers the cost of music therapy and well established recreation programs (Entertainment and Outings) for the residents. “I want to thank you all from the bottom of my heart for looking after Mom in the last years of her life. It has been a difficult journey, but now Mom is finally at peace. I know she had many good experiences at Mountain View Manor especially because of the kind and caring staff you have there. She also greatly enjoyed the wonderful recreation program. She loved going on outings, such as meals out and the times she was able to go on bus drives or wonderfully, to a play! She enjoyed the garden, the musicians who came to perform, the dancers, the Christmas lunches, the Light the Way event, the wii games, the chime choir, the baking sessions, the art classes and so on and so on. These were the activities that kept her going under trying physical limitations.” Sincerely, Family member of former Mountain View Manor resident I often have family members tell me they can’t believe how much more lucid and relaxed music therapy makes their loved ones. “They seem like their old self again even if only for awhile!” “They seldom even speak anymore yet they sing with you!” While this is only one small example of how music can be used to reach a goal such as “reduce anxiety,” skilled Music Therapists know many ways of improving quality of life. “We have ways of making you sing!” I am proud of my association with Delta Hospital Auxiliary and proud of the tradition of care we have built together through Music Therapy over the past seven years. It is indeed a privilege to serve among you and I have grown to love the dear folks who have built this remarkable community. Sincerely, Jo Anne Tait, Music Therapist Accredited

The South Delta business scene is starting to get a clearer picture of what it faces with the massive influx of retail coming next year. As construction continues on Tsawwassen Mills at the Tsawwassen First Nation, Property Development Group, the developer behind the adjacent Tsawwassen Commons mall, has a website (tsawwassencommons.ca) that’s been quietly up and running with information on the layout, the latest tenants as well as just how many retailers are planned. Walmart and Rona were confirmed as anchor tenants last year, but the website now shows retailers such as Canadian Tire, Petsmart, Mark’s Work Wearhouse and Dollarama have also signed. As well, there are a number of eating establishments on board, including Menchies, Triple O’s, Starbucks, Tim Hortons and Quiznos. Of the more than 100 retail spaces in Tsawwassen Commons, over 30 others have leases “pending” while the remainder are termed as “available.” Those new businesses will be on top of the approximately 200 stores that will be part of Ivanhoe Cambridge’s Tsawwassen Mills, a fashion-oriented destination mall. While the construction of Tsawwassen Mills, which will comprise over 1.2 million-square feet of retail space, is well underway, construction of Tsawwassen Commons, comprising 550,000 square feet of outdoor space, will start this spring. It will be ready in time for the May 2016 grand opening of both malls, said Property Development Group chair Laurence Rank. Rank said filling up mall

Family business featuring local surgeon on CBC show BY

A local surgeon and his family business will venture into the Dragon’s Den next week. Dr. Jean Segal and his family developed a fashionable version of compression socks to aid in blood circulation. The project started in 2012, and Dr. Segal’s Compression Socks are now sold in over 900 locations across Canada. Randi Segal and her son, Brandon, and daughter, Haylie, work on various aspects of the business, while Dr. Segal, a surgeon at Delta Hospital and one of the speakers at the Friends of Delta Hospital forum earlier this month, is a medical advisor. The four of them will appear on an episode of Dragon’s Den next Wednesday at 8 p.m. on CBC. Randi Segal said they

had been considering going on the popular TV show for a while, and had been urged by many people to try it. “We had to feel we were ready to go, and that we had all the necessary ingredients to do a good pitch,” she said. Last year they decided they were ready for that show that sees entrepreneurs make pitches to a panel of Canadian business moguls in search of investment capital. They had an audition in February and were invited to film the show in Toronto last April. The idea for Dr. Segal’s Compression Socks came as a solution to a problem. Dr. Segal had prescribed all the different compression socks on the market over the last 20 years but patients were often unhappy with the socks. Patients complained the standard compression socks were ugly and uncomfortable.

“We thought if they look better maybe we can get people to wear them,” said Randi Segal. The Segal family, which includes son Brandon, a graduate of the Sauder School of Business, developed a version it feels patients will feel more comfortable and fashionable in. “We have lots of different colours, patterns. It’s not just that straight, ugly, beige sock,” she said. Segal stressed that compression socks are for anyone who spends time on their feet. “We’re really working on changing the perception of compression socks. It doesn’t matter whether you’re young or you’re old. It’s a form of prevention,” she said. Segal, who couldn’t divulge how the pitch was received, said it was an interesting experience and she’s glad they participated in the Dragon’s Den.

TO MY CLIENTS It is with deep sadness that I, Henriette Leschert, must let my customers know that C’est Moi Boutique will be closing it’s doors in the next couple of months. Last week I received a final diagnosis from my urologist oncologist specialist that I have a tumor in my left kidney and that I also have cancer on my upper and lower spine and sternum. In light of this, I must focus my energies on treatments commencing in March and my family. My time left is limited and that is why I will be closing in the next couple of months. I would ask that all my customers who have gift cards, store credits, etc. please come in and make good use of them. We have spring stock in and are clearing older stock and transition deliveries already. I want to thank all my dear customers for their faithful patronization of the store over the last 15 years. It has been an honour and joy to work with you. I have seen your children grow up, marriages prosper and flounder, health issues come and go and many other celebration and milestone events. I will miss you all. It has been a unique blessing to live and work in this community. C’est Moi is not for sale. While the store is and has been profitable, selling a business brings it’s own stresses and my time is limited. Money is not that important anymore, faith, family and relationships are. So when the doors close, 15 years of doing business in this wonderful community will also come to an end. I would want people to remember C’est Moi the way it is and has been. I remember one customer who had returned from doing a tour in Afghanistan as a gunner, and her question to her mom upon her return here was, “please tell me that C’est Moi is still there”. In the near future, it won’t be anymore, but the memories of me and you, the customer, our interactions will live on and hopefully the wardrobe of beautiful clothes hanging in your closet. We always tried to sell merchandise that was of good quality and lasting in style.

Inland terminal given a boost

Global logistics company’s announcement it will soon handle containers at Ashcroft could benefit Delta BY

SANDOR GYARMATI

sgyarmati@delta-optimist.com

Container handling coming to the Ashcroft Terminal is being touted as a potential positive for Delta’s farmland. Global logistics company Canaan Group announced this month it would commence container handling operations and logistics services at the Ashcroft Terminal starting this year. Situated about 100 kilometres west of Kamloops along the Thompson River, Ashcroft Terminal is already a busy transloading facility for commodities into railcars, but the container business would be an especially complementary fit for West Coast ports, including Deltaport, said Kleo Landucci, Ashcroft Terminal’s vice-president of project development. “The question is how does Ashcroft Terminal allow for the support of Port Metro Vancouver’s throughput and how can we do that more efficiently. The product still has to come into the Lower Mainland and it’s driving right past our door right now,” she said. “Every single rail car

FILE PHOTO

Plans to add a container transloading facility at Ashcroft Terminal are being hailed as something that could alleviate pressure to industrialize Delta’s farmland, but it would require the logistics chain to get on board. on both main lines passes directly through our terminal. So there’s a matching opportunity that can happen, and this is a model that’s successful all over the world.” Landucci noted the Ashcroft facility has a huge area that could be built out, which means even more opportunities for transloading, while reducing the pressure to develop farmland here to handle that

activity. “There’s all this talk about various infrastructure products to move goods. The one thing that gets left out of those conversations — in our mind the most important — is what’s the cost to the producer. What’s good business for B.C. should be good business for the rest of us, and viceversa.” Noting a second container terminal in Delta

would still be needed to handle growing volumes, a spokesperson for Port Metro Vancouver agreed the inland terminal is a good opportunity because it would be an alternate location where containers could be unloaded to sort out products for their ultimate destinations. Currently, 70 per cent of containers taken off ships at Deltaport are loaded onto trains and head directly to

points east, while 30 per cent are transferred onto trucks. Five per cent of containers head to the local market in Greater Vancouver via trucks while the other 25 per cent are taken by trucks to storage facilities somewhere in the Lower Mainland for “stuffing and de-stuffing.” That’s where products inside are unloaded, sorted and reloaded into different containers for their

final destinations. As far as exports, it’s the same story with many containers coming in by train to rail yards here and transferred for transportation to the port. Ashcroft could be an opportunity for that activity, particularly for exports, to occur outside the Lower Mainland, alleviating the pressure for more industrial land while also reducing truck traffic. However, according to the port, that off-site transloading activity depends on companies seeing a business case to do it in Ashcroft. The question of the inland port was discussed at Delta’s port community liaison committee last fall, where it was noted by port officials that Ashcroft is inland and a marine shipping terminal would still be needed. However, since industrial land is in short supply in the Lower Mainland, if Ashcroft can provide that land, it would alleviate the shortage. It would be up to cargo owners and logistics chain members, though, to make the decision to use Ashcroft.

Jackson hopeful Delta farmland can be spared

Mayor doing her part to convince shippers on potential an inland port BY

SANDOR GYARMATI

Mayor Lois Jackson is hoping Ashcroft will be seen as a good choice in the goods movement chain. Asked for her take on the recent announcement that Canaan Group would commence container handling operations and logistics services at the Ashcroft Terminal, Jackson, who has been lobbying for an inland terminal, said she was encouraged, noting it could alleviate the pressure to convert Delta farmland into warehousing and logistics centres. The mayor was asked to be a moderator for the Cargo Logistics Canada Conference & Expo at the Vancouver Convention Centre in late January, a forum Jackson said was an opportunity for her to help “connect the dots” and convince shippers an inland port would be a good alternative. “There were some very

Richmond Coun. Harold Steves, a critic of Port Metro Vancouver, said he’s skeptical the port would offer much encouragement to suppliers to use the Ashcroft Terminal. “There’s very good reason they’d want to use port facilities. It’s because the people that run the port are also the owners of these corporations and if they are using Ashcroft, then somebody else is making the money,” said Steves. “That’s what we’ve got to get across: there are alternatives to this constant port expansion, whether it’s at the terminal itself at Roberts Bank or whether it’s expanding onto farmland. We have vast areas in Ashcroft and Kamloops. The ships come in at

TED MURPHY

MURPHY’S LAW You can add last fall’s municipal election here in Delta to a growing list of examples why campaign finance reform is needed. There has been a move afoot for several years now to impose campaign contribution limits at both the provincial and municipal levels, but little has been accomplished in that regard. There have been repeated calls, including from our own MLA on several occasions, for a ban on corporate and union donations in an attempt to restore integrity in the democratic process and give political influence back to the people. Financial disclosure documents for last November’s civic election that were released by Elections BC this week provide yet another example of why that chorus of voices continues to get louder. The list of campaign contributors to the Delta Independent Voters’ Association reads like a who’s who of Delta’s development community. Century, Shato, Polygon, Dayhu, Alpha... pick just about any major project in these parts and you’ll find the proponent on DIVA’s list of contributors. To be clear, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with these donations, which are perfectly acceptable under the current regulations governing municipal elections. However, the optics of such an arrangement can leave people with the uneasy feeling that the public’s voice is taking a back seat to corporate interests. Maybe the decisions at the Delta council table would have turned out the same way regardless of whether campaign donations had been made or not. Maybe it’s simply a case of business types supporting like-minded people running for public office. Whether concerns over undue influence as a result of campaign contributions are real or merely perceived, they create a dark cloud over the governing process, one that simply doesn’t need to be there. How does the person speaking at a public hearing that didn’t donate a nickel to any candidate feel when they’re offering an opinion on a project put forth by a developer who has given thousands to politicians’ war chests? Again, maybe everyone receives a fair shake and the right decision ultimately gets made, but the saying about perception being the reality certainly applies here. That can all be addressed by simply limiting contributions to a nominal amount or by banning corporate and union donations altogether. Restrictions exist at the federal level and in many provinces for a reason. It’s about time they were embraced here in B.C.

Bullies need to understand the far-reaching pain they cause MIKE SCHNEIDER

COMMUNITY COMMENT When I was a kid, there was an older boy who lived down the street named Barry. He was a leader in the hood and organized all kinds of activities for all the kids on the block and surrounding area. He was also a bully. I witnessed him physically and mentally torment kids younger than him on a regular basis. I was not affected by his actions as much as other kids, probably because I was the only punk on the block that would agree to go in net when we played street hockey. He had an unbelievable slap shot and always shot top shelf. One day, though, Barry and an even older bully named Pete decided they would hog-tie me in Barry’s garage. Looking much like a Ad Vinci sketch with arms and legs outstretched, tied and unable to move, the two thugs proceeded

to pelt me with dogwoods they had previously gathered and placed in an ice cream bucket. I was about eight years old and endured the onslaught for about 10 minutes. I started to cry as I could begin to taste the saltiness of a nosebleed. When they finished their fun, they just left me alone. I thought they were going to get more dogwoods but they didn’t come back until it was starting to get dark out. They finally let me go and I went home bloodied and late for dinner. Posed with the “what happened to you?”, I could only say that I fell playing soccer for fear that any real accounting of events would only bring more grief and potential abuse. Fear of repercussion is a real threat to victims of bullying. The internalization of feelings of shame can lead to a sense of worthlessness and low self-esteem. If not addressed, this horrible angst can lead to depression, borderline personality disorder, attention deficit disorder and variety of other mental health conditions that have proven to be lethal for far too many. Bullying, as a real time occur-

rence, has far-reaching implications that the bully needs to understand. The arrogance and narcissism often associated with the bully make it difficult for them to understand they can cause immeasurable grief not only to the victim, but also to the victim’s family and friends. Bullies are usually psychopaths. Although Barry went on to pitch for the Washington State team on a full-ride scholarship, I did get my revenge on him in high school. He was on the mound in a close playoff game and had struck me out in the game twice prior. On my third appearance at the plate, I looked at a change-up strike and whiffed on a curveball. Down 02 in the count, I could see Barry smiling. I knew he was thinking dogwoods and I knew he was going to throw me high heat just like he did all those years ago. I almost took his head off with a line drive up the middle that brought in two runs and eventually won the game. Most victims of bullying don’t see happy endings unfortunately. I hope you wore pink on Wednesday and if you didn’t, there’s still time. Talk with your kids if you see the signs.

Loyal shoppers won’t stray

Editor: It is right and proper for Tsawwassen and Ladner merchants to be nervous and edgy about the arrival of two shopping malls on Tsawwassen First Nation land. They should not worry excessively or unnecessarily, however. At present my family and I do 85 per cent of our day-to-day shopping locally. Exceptions are occasional runs to Canadian Tire, Costco, Home Depot and IKEA like everybody else we know out here. If

those companies locate at TFN, good-bye trips to Richmond. But change to shopping at Walmart grocery to save a few measly loonies from what we pay at Thrifty Foods or Save-On or Meridian or Joe’s? Or the small local shops from cleaners to pet foods to variety and specialty stores? Not likely. Gas to Richmond Centre costs me nearly $10 roundtrip (Tsawwassen/Metro pricing), plus the hassle of the tunnel. OK, closer to get to the

TFN properties, sure, but there’s always the mall-ophobia factor to consider, too, no matter how “chic” Ivanhoe Cambridge intends its complex to be with its acres of macadam parking. If local shopkeepers continue to provide responsive, user-friendly service to us locals, they have nothing to fear from the looming mega-mall-dom and all their bright lights just across the highway. Treat us right and we’ll continue to reciprocate quite happily. W. Baird Blackstone

Cammidge visitors help bring history to life Editor: On behalf of the Boundary Bay Park Association I would like to thank all the people who visited Cammidge House last Sunday for our annual Heritage Day event. This year’s theme was Main Street — the Heart of the Community and it was enlightening to listen to our visitors who had lived in Tsawwassen and Ladner, in one instance since 1945,

and the stories they told of life before and after the opening of the George Massey Tunnel. Over the years as we have been putting on this event it is always encouraging to hear people add the human experience to what tends to be dull, old historical facts. Thanks also to Metro Vancouver Parks (West Area) for their display, the Boundary Bay Quilters

Guild that put on a colourful display of their work and the vintage car owners who always draw a crowd of fathers of all ages reminiscing about the cars they have known. The success of the event is always enhanced by our visitors and makes us look forward to next year. Geof Hacker President Boundary Bay Park Association

East Coast senator pays tribute to efforts of late Marie Warder

David Wells grateful for Tsawwassen woman’s work on hemochromatosis

During the Feb. 19 sitting of the Senate, Senator David Wells of Newfoundland and Labrador paid tribute to the late Marie Warder of Tsawwassen and her accomplishments in raising awareness of hereditary hemochromatosis in Canada. Wells, who has hereditary hemochromatosis, spoke of the avoidable complications caused by unrecognized iron overload, and the work of the Canadian Hemochromatosis Society to bring awareness to the condition and support to individuals and families affected. The following is a portion of Wells’ statement: “Honourable senators, I rise today to pay tribute to Marie Warder and to bring awareness to a common genetic disorder that remains relatively unknown: hemochromatosis. It is a genetic disorder where there is excessive and potentially toxic accumulation of dietary iron in the body. This iron overload can be fatal. I know this all too well because I, too, suffer from this condition. “Marie Warder founded the Canadian Hemochromatosis Society in British Columbia 35 years ago. The Canadian Hemochromatosis Society is her legacy. In 1992,

David Wells hemochromatosis took the life of Marie’s husband, Tom. Tom suffered from liver disease resulting from hemochromatosis and, sadly, Canada lost Marie Warder this past October. “Hemochromatosis is Canada’s most common genetic disorder. Those with hemochromatosis are genetically unable to metabolize iron absorbed from their diet. Men and women are equally affected. Harmful iron overload occurs in joints, the liver, pancreas, heart, brain and endocrine glands. Left unrecognized and undiagnosed, the consequences of too much iron can be prolonged, severe and fatal. “One in 300 Canadians has the condition; 125,000 people in Canada have the genetic potential to suffer severe organ damage due to iron overload. It’s believed that only 20 per cent of those with hemochromatosis know they have it. “Hemochromatosis can-

Diagnosis is made through blood tests and genetic testing. Treatment is simple: frequent and regular removal of blood. This blood is suitable for donation. “The Canadian Hemochromatosis Society strives to create awareness of hemochromatosis and provide support for those

Delta council has denied an application that would have seen Delta’s only squash club demolished to make way for a pair of waterfront homes. Members and supporters of the Bayside Squash Club were on hand for a public hearing at municipal hall Tuesday to plead their case against the proposal to subdivide a lot at 6788 Corbould Rd. in Boundary Bay. The building has been home to the squash club since the late 1970s, but the property’s new owner was seeking to demolish the structure and split the site into two lots to build a single-family home on each. Noting the current zoning for the site is recreational, Coun. Jeannie Kanakos said she voted against the application, preferring the community keep its recreational amenity as well as easier access to the waterfront. “It’s zoned private recreation, and therefore it’s a property that’s accessible to a large number of people. The fact that it’s on the water is very huge. You can access the beach there,

Mindy was surrendered to the shelter with her sister, Susie due to unfortunate circumstances. One elderly owner passed away while the other one went to a nursing home. Mindy is described as the more dominant, confident cat of the two. We feel that she would be ok in a home with another submissive cat. We don’t think Mindy has had much interaction with children so she would probably do best in an adult only home or with older children. She enjoys attention but is somewhat shy here at the shelter. We feel her personality will show more once she is in a home atmosphere. Mindy is hanging out at our Tsawwassen store, come on in and visit her.

Faithful follower Peter was a good friend. He helped whenever he was needed and was faithful to answer God’s call to follow Jesus. He went about the countryside feeding and healing people and watching as Jesus touched and made new the lives of so many. Peter’s life was transformed when he followed Jesus. But one day Peter decided that things were not going as he anticipated they should. He ran around in front of the teacher Jesus and assumed the place of the leader. He wanted Jesus to make decisions and act, as he, Peter, wanted him to act. To this, Jesus replies, “Get behind me.” This is the tricky part about being a Christian — my instinct is to try

and remake Jesus into the image and being that I want. I often have arguments in my prayer life with God and tell God that things aren’t right — at least as I see it! But the calling of every Christian is for our hearts to be transformed into the image of Christ — following the one who is the giver of new life. So when Peter tried to take over, Jesus quickly reminded him that his place was to be a faithful follower of the one who brings new life. That’s the question for me every day: Whom do I follow? Does my faithfulness bring new life to me and those who I serve? Am I willing to be transformed into the likeness of Christ? Now there’s a Lenten discipline for us to try.

Ladner’s Tracy-Lynn Chernaske and Joe Hinks are tackling a site-specific show for Standing Room Only Theatre’s next production. Chernaske, the director, describes The Weir by Conor McPherson as a roller coaster. “It starts off light and funny and then it kind of dips down into this really dark place,” she says, adding it does end on a

lighter note. The play is set in a rural Irish town and revolves around four local men, one of whom owns a pub. One of the men brings Valerie, a newcomer to town, to the pub. The play explores their relationships with each other. “Everyone, by the end of the play, kind of changes,” says Hinks, the assistant director and stage manager. The play will be a part of two Celtic festivals next month — the Vancouver CelticFest and the White Rock Irish

Festival. It will be staged at two Vancouver pubs and another in White Rock. “Each space is different. They’re very eclectic spaces. They’ve each got their own charm,” says Hinks. The audience will get to be up close and personal to the performance, he notes. “The actors will literally be walking in amongst the tables. The audience can actually have their drinks in the pub as they watch the performance all around them. It should be fun.” Chernaske is doing some fundraising

for the production by selling homemade small-batch artisan tea. She’s created a specialty black tea called Blackberry Whiskey Marmalade for the fundraiser. It includes blackberries, whiskey, honey and a little bit of thistle and has an English breakfast tea base, she says. It is available at https://www.etsy.com/ listing/216514653/blackberry-whiskeymarmalade-tea. The Weir runs March 7 to 15 at various pubs. Tickets are $17. Golf club returns to Springs

The Tsawwassen Men’s Golf Club is excited about celebrating its 35th anniversary and heading back to its roots at Tsawwassen Springs, says president Bruce MacLean. The club started in 1980 and has grown into one of the best men’s golf clubs in B.C., MacLean says. Members played at Tsawwassen Golf & Country Club from 1980 to 2010 and while Tsawwassen Springs was being built, have for the past four seasons played at Delta Golf Course (2011), and Kings Links (2012 to 2014). The club thanks both golf courses for their exceptional hospitality and partnership. The new season starts on Tuesday, March 31 and ends with a wind up banquet on Friday, Sept. 25. The club plays every Tuesday with tee times from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. This year the club has been invited to play five Tuesdays at Beach Grove Golf Club.

The club is thrilled with this new venture as it adds a whole new experience for members, says MacLean, adding the club thanks the management and staff at Beach Grove for opening their golf course. The club would like to give a big thank you to its sponsors for coming on board for the 2015 season. They are: Tsawwassen Springs Golf, Beach Grove Golf Club, The Rose & Crown Pub, Murray Poje, Brad Datto, Pacific Advertising, Riverhouse Pub, Firstar Performance Apparel, Cobra Puma Golf, Cleveland Golf, Srixon Golf, Beverage Concepts, Asahi Beer, Cannery Beer and Ron Diplomatico Rum. The club is now accepting new members. For more information, call Tsawwassen Springs pro shop at 604-948-4653, email info@tmgc.ca or visit the club’s website at www.tmgc.ca.

The remote Scottish Hebrides Islands offer white sand beaches, turquoise sea, golden glens

BY

JULIE H. FERGUSON Optimist contributor

Three weeks and 15 islands developed into a trip of a lifetime. Every September morning I wondered why I hadn’t explored the Scottish Hebrides before. White sand beaches and turquoise sea, purplewashed mountains and golden glens, no tourists and little traffic tempted me to explore every day. Then there were the sheep – more sheep than people. Dry days and mostly sunshine heightened my enchantment and I lapped up the region’s long history wherever I found it in medieval castles, museums and even pubs. The Hebrides run northsouth off Scotland’s west coast. The islands of the major 39, including the best known of Skye and Mull, were created by volcanic action and sculpted by the restless North Atlantic. Each island is distinct and all are warmed by the Gulf Stream. Some are mountainous, others are flat; some are Catholic and others are Protestant; all teach Gaelic. I experienced the islands from sea and air, on foot and by car. A cruise in a converted trawler began my adventure in the Inner Hebrides. Nine passengers and I circumnavigated the

Isle of Mull, also visiting Iona and Staffa. Each night and lunchtime we anchored in a remote bay or sea loch, alone but for the sky and sea birds, with no engine noise or swells to disturb us. We ate seafood so fresh it shocked my taste buds. An expert took us on a day’s wildlife safari on Mull to observe endangered sea and golden eagles, seals and herds of deer. We searched for otters, but they did not appear, and the puffins were at sea. We tendered into Staff on a foggy day to see Fingal’s

Cave and climbed to it around a perilous ledge atop hexagonal basalt columns. The sea surged below us, clear and cold. Our four-hour visit to the sacred Isle of Iona, the birthplace of Celtic Christianity, fascinated me. Standing on deck, I caught a glimpse of the restored medieval abbey on a grassy shelf west of the village. Only two of the 300 Celtic crosses still stand outside the abbey church. I enjoyed several days on Arran and Tiree too. Arran, the most southerly of the

Inner Hebrides, is a short journey from Glasgow by road and ferry. Its east coast is lush; the west, drier, with mountains and glens inland. It’s a mini-Scotland. A fullday photography workshop/ safari was my highlight. The most westerly isle is Tiree, which boasts the most sunshine in the UK. But even on a warm summer day, the wind whistles across the treeless landscape. Tiree’s beaches shine like the crescent moon, and Highland cattle chew their cud in the machair, Gaelic for the grassy plain.

Flying into Barra had long been on my bucket list because the airport is a beach. The Twin Otter banked hard and within seconds was skimming into land at low tide on the Cockle Strand. The fat tires bounced and I breathed again. Thus began my romance with the Outer Hebrides. The tiny rental car fitted the roads perfectly; most are single-track, no wider than the car, with passing places. The Outer Hebrides are remote, wild and different again. The

Uists sport bare mountains, rippling grasslands on the coastal plain and tiny villages; their west coasts are strewn with empty beaches, ruined crofters’ cottages and shaggy sheep. Sea lochs penetrate deep inland on the eastern shores, and here I encountered my first wild horses browsing in the heather. The ferry to the Isle of Harris was slowed by dense fog and, on safe arrival, I promptly bought a Harris Tweed jacket the colour of the heather. In the south, Harris is covered with granite boulders; the roads wind around them and up and down the countryside. Inland lochs are surrounded by rusty bracken. I drove north through the mountains and glens of the Isle of Lewis to Stornoway. My final outing was a pilgrimage to the ancient Calanais Standing Stones on the northwest coast, upon which equinoctial moons dance. Like much of my 15island adventure, I sensed untold mysticism amid the isolation. Library book club celebrates 10 years March sees the Tsawwassen Evening Book Club celebrate 10 years of reading together. The club, which has read a total of 120 books (12 per year since conception), meets at the Tsawwassen Library on the second Thursday of every month to discuss the current title. According to Lynne Sheehy, original book club member and list keeper of all books read, the club’s first meeting was on March 10, 2005 and the first book read was The Blind Assassin by Margaret Atwood. Ten years later, members are reading Goodnight June by Sarah Jio. The club was so popular that it eventually generated another book club that meets in the afternoon on the same day each month. Member Marie Bach values the great conversation about all kinds of books they probably would never

have chosen on their own. In recognition of the group’s history with Fraser Valley Regional Library, library staff will provide tea/coffee and goodies at the next meeting, set for Thursday, March 12 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. New members are welcome at all Delta library book clubs, which provide opportunities to meet fellow book lovers and discuss selected titles. Call or visit the library to learn which book is being discussed this month. Copies of the current month’s book are available at the library. Pick up the latest copy of At Your Library, FVRL’s program guide, for dates and times of all librarybased book clubs. olunteers came together to form the Cloverdale Senior Citizens Society in 1956. The society obtained CMHC financing to build 16 cottages for the housing of low-income seniors in Cloverdale. Many people enjoyed safe and reasonable accommodation over the next 60 years.

However, as time passed, the cottages fell into disrepair. The destruction of the old cottages needed to be done before construction began. Neighbors watched and supervised as Bethshan was reborn. A project coordinator oversaw the interests of the society through construction to ensure future residents had units to live in that were well built. The board of directors toured the building almost monthly. In October, when the roof was not completed, the board stepped lightly in the darkness to review progress. Bethshan Gardens opened January 15, 2009. Beautiful interior finishes welcomed guests and dignitaries to the official opening ceremonies. Four residents moved in on opening day, two of whom are still enjoying life at Bethshan. During the first week of organizing, cooking and welcoming other residents, it was decided to have a congratulatory and complementary glass of wine with Sunday dinner. That tradition continues today.

Anniversary 2009-2014 Over the next five years, more than 100 residents have enjoyed their suites at Bethshan. Sixty different staff members have had employment. Bethshan offers one and two bedroom units on four floors. Rents are all inclusive so there are no worries for residents about routine expenses. Two meals a day, light weekly housekeeping service, overnight emergency response staff and a variety of activities are included in the monthly fee. Rents are modest compared to the marketplace in keeping with the intent of providing housing to lower income individuals. The non-profit ownership of Bethshan also assists in keeping rent to modest levels. Bethshan is home to 70 people, singles and couples. A home-like philosophy determines many day-to- day decisions. Small pets are welcomed. Modification of suites to residents taste is encouraged. A casual, friendly atmosphere provides a comfortable living style for residents. A large common room provides an ideal venue for movie night, bingo, crafts or just reading from the library. A new bus has been added to the service offering day trips. The future looks bright for Bethshan. Many more residents will be cared for in this independent living retirement residence. The first five years are just the beginning.

Ice Hawks season swept away

Ownership not happy as junior hockey team goes down in straight games to North Vancouver BY

MARK BOOTH

mbooth@delta-optimist.com

There will be a hard look at the organization from top to bottom after the Delta Ice Hawks were promptly eliminated from the Pacific Junior Hockey League playoffs. The Ice Hawks’ season ended Tuesday night with a 6-1 loss to the visiting North Vancouver Wolf Pack, completing a sweep of the quarter-final series. Delta was outscored 24-9 over the four games against the league’s regular season champion that was 21 points better in the standings. However, the teams split the season series (3-3-0) and the hope was to at least duplicate last year’s hard-fought six game loss. Instead, it was another step back for a franchise that was a powerhouse not long ago. The Ice Hawks won the league championship in 2012 and took eventual Western Canadian champion Richmond to the seventh game of the conference finals a year later. Since then, they have bowed out in the opening round consecutive seasons and not won a home playoff game each time. “This series speaks for itself,” said club president and co-owner George Georgeopoulos. “We are a competitive group and we don’t like losing. There is no excuse for us to be knocked out in four games. We expected more. “We will be reviewing everything but there will be significant changes to bring the Hawks back to being one of the elite

Despite solid series from U18 Delta Wild affiliate Nick Wicks (left) and rookie Jake Fletcher, they often saw themselves out numbered as the North Vancouver Wolf Pack dominated the Pacific Junior Hockey League quarter-final match-up from start to finish. teams of junior ‘B’ hockey.” The club parted ways with head coach Dave McLellan following the playoff loss to Richmond in 2013. Longtime Seafair Minor coach Derek Chichak stepped in for Roger Ross in January of last season. He not only had plenty of success with his Seafair teams but his sons Andrew and Sam had prominent roles in championship runs by the Sockeyes. Chichak says his club simply ran into a hungry

opponent that always had an answer when it seemed like the Hawks had seized momentum. “In all my years of coaching, I have never seen anything like it,” he said. “Give them full credit. They are a determined group and our youth really showed anytime they were pushing back hard at us. “I thought we did a decent job taking away their stretch pass but our back checking wasn’t good enough and we gave up just way too many shots.” Chichak also pointed to

a four-game suspension to leading scorer and veteran Brent Chreptyk that kept him out the entire series. Injuries on the blueline also forced forwards Mark Trotman and Evan Kite to log minutes on the back end. While ownership anticipated a step back after losing a number of key 20-year-olds, the belief was the talent was in place for the the club to contend again this season. “Last year we kind of expected it but this year we thought we had enough

pieces in place if they were developed that we could have made a run,” added Georgeopoulos. “I was disappointed earlier when I thought we didn’t have a grittier or tougher team and I made my opinion known at the time. But I wanted to let the coaches do their thing and make a decision later.” The Wolf Pack will meet the Richmond Sockeyes or the Grandview Steelers in the Tom Shaw Conference finals. That series is tied at 2-2 with each team winning twice on the road.

Thormeyer’s five gold medals lead Dolphins strong showing at Westerns

Solid season for Grade 8 Pacers

PHOTO

BY

GORD GOBLE

The Delta Pacers Grade 8 girls basketball team just missed out on winning district title then advanced to the second round at the Fraser Valley Championships. The girls were coached by Kerrie Trotman.

Big things come in small packages as the Winskill Dolphins once again proved at last weekend’s Canadian Western Open in Edmonton. With a contingent of just six athletes, the Dolphins returned home with a whopping 11 medals, including eight gold, and finished 11th overall out of 58 teams. Winskill swimmers qualified for 24 finals in a meet that featured over 500 swimmers from the four Western provinces, along with the Yukon Territory. Markus Thormeyer (17) duplicated his powerhouse performance from the 2014 Westerns, winning five gold medals in the 17&Over boys division — 50m and 200m backstroke, 100m and 200m freestyle, and 200m individual medley. Only two other swimmers duplicated the feat. Thormeyer also won silver in the 100m free and 200m back. His 100 and 200 back times rank fourth and second overall in the

nation. Tai Long Singh (15) picked up his first “A” final in 50m butterfly. From there, things really got rolling. Singh won three gold medals in 50m and 100m fly, taking the later from an outside lane, as well as 50m backstroke! He finished fifth in 100m freestyle and won the 100m backstroke “B” final. Fellow Western sophomore Paul Zou (15) also took home his first “A” final and medal. Zou stepped onto the podium with a bronze in 400m freestyle. He further distinguished himself by placing fourth and fifth respectively in 800m and 200m free. Brandon Freiberger (16) lit up the lanes, racing to personal best performances nearly every time he touched the water. He made his first “B” final at Westerns in 50m and 100m butterfly, and 50m backstroke. On the last night of competition, he raised his game to finish fifth in the 50m

freestyle “A” final, also a first, narrowly missing the podium. Nunu Singh (17) swam to seasonal best performances in the 50m freestyle and 100m backstroke, and re-established herself in the sprint events by finishing seventh in 16&O girls 50m backstroke “A” final. Ali Gracan (17) also recorded seasonal best times in all her events, including standout performances in the 200m breaststroke, and 50m and 100m freestyle. “Racing early in the new year is what we had to do and we did just that,” said Dolphins coach Ben Keast. “There were new challenges this year – changes in the meet format, difficult standards, an older field of competition, an unfamiliar venue – but our swimmers took these in stride, learning and adapting to them. The racing was exciting but the lessons learned here will be invaluable to the rest of our season.”

Hobgoblins wins Battle of the Sound tourney down south Fresh off capturing the PCAHA banner in league play, the South Delta Hobgoblins returned home as champions from the 10th annual “Battle for the Sound” Midget hockey tournament in Bremerton, WA. The event featured 16 teams from B.C., Washington and Oregon. During round robin play the Hobgoblins went 3-0, defeating teams from Langley, South Surrey and Kent Wa. They outscored 16-3 in the process while collecting only two penalties. South Delta moved onto the semi-finals which featured the four group winners. The locals continued to roll with a 9-1 win over the hosts from Bremerton. The result made it an all-B.C. final against one of the top teams from Semiahmoo. South Delta opened the scoring with one of his many great plays during the weekend by Jamil Walji as he set up Jared Garcha. With the score tied 1-1, Walji once again put his team on top with an unassisted goal late in the second period. It

was deadlocked again at 2-2 when Carter Cook scored during a goal mouth scramble late in regulation time to give the Hobgoblins a dramatic 3-2 win. Each and every player contributed offensively or defensively over the weekend to help with their team’s success. Highlights included a four point game by Jack Kraemer in

a 5-2 win, and six points from Tavin Jackson in a 6-0 victory. For the majority of the 12 boys , it was fantastic way to end 13 years of minor hockey as Cameron Chisholm, Declan Bostock, Carter Cooke, Tavin Jackson, Kurtis Mattice, James Hass and Kaden Janzen are all in their final year of midget hockey. The rest of the Hobgoblins in Bremerton were: Ciaren Bostock, Gursagar Brar, Jared Garcha, Iver Jackson, Thomas Morison, Liam Peake and Cameron Thompson. Unable to attend the tournament but contributing to the season success were Joel Bourque, Tyler Schadow and Max Walker. The parents acknowledge team manager Peter Hass for a tireless job of keeping everyone organized all season. Also a huge thank you to coaches of Anthony Askin and Brian Jesty. These two young men have no family ties to the players and volunteered their time to create an incredibly fun and always fair environment.
