The company behind the contentious plan to erect radio transmission towers in Point Roberts is taking its fight to court.

BBC Broadcasting Inc. has filed a LUPA (Land Use Petition Act) appeal in Skagit County Superior Court. In Washington state, LUPA provides a direct judicial review of land use decisions.

The company has gone to court to appeal a decision by Whatcom County council, which upheld a ruling by the county’s hearing examiner to reject the towers because they exceeded height limits in the American peninsula.

wants to erect five 45metre (150-foot) steel towers at an undeveloped lot on McKenzie Way just a few hundred metres from the Tsawwassen border.

The towers would transmit South Asian radio station KRPI, AM 1550, which broadcasts from studios in Richmond to a Lower Mainland audience. Also known as Sher-E-Punjab AM 1550, the station uses antenna in Ferndale, Wash., but wants to relocate them for a stronger signal.

Residents on both sides of the border are concerned the towers would create blanketing interference that would cause havoc with household electronics.

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) granted

a construction permit but a zoning permit was required from Whatcom County.

Just days before a county public hearing on the proposal was scheduled to begin last fall, the hearing examiner announced he had denied the application. It was a pleasant surprise for opponents, who had been fighting the project on several fronts for a year-anda-half.

Opponents say the company believes the application trumps height limits because it can be considered public utility infrastructure, but residents claim that’s not the case as the towers would serve no useful purpose for the Point Roberts community.

Mindy was surrendered to the shelter with her sister, Susie due to unfortunate circumstances. One elderly owner passed away while the other one went to a nursing home. Mindy is described as the more dominant, confident cat of the two. We feel that she would be ok in a home with another submissive cat. Teachers sound alarm over state of schools

Delta schools are becoming dirtier, unsanitary and are not well maintained.

Delta Teachers’ Association president Paul Steer had that to convey to the Delta board of education Tuesday evening during a pre-budget consultation meeting at the district’s Ladner headquarters.

Steer said the DTA is gathering feedback from its members on school board priorities as trustees begin preparing next year’s operating budget, which is expected to have another deficit. He said some of the early input tells of a troubling situation of poorly maintained schools.

Concerned about even more reductions to custodial staff and a lack of proper upgrades in many facilities, teachers are painting an alarming picture of what have become shabby working conditions and a poor learning environment for students, according to Steer.

“We all know that custodial and preventative maintenance services have been cut now for many years. We also know that our school buildings are aging and are showing the wear-and-tear typical of buildings that are at or beyond the halfcentury mark,” Steer told trustees.

“One way of dealing with buildings and their indoor and outdoor environments is to simply ignore these problems as they arise... the vexing thing about problems: once they’ve been ignored is that when they come back, they tend to be much worse and harder to solve,” he said.

Steer listed problems teachers believe have been ignored, including running or constantly plugged toilets, schools that are not fully wheelchair accessible, schools that haven’t seen painting of interior finishes for over a decade or more, dusty carpeting on walls installed in the 1970s, heating and cooling problems, poor security locks as well as mould, poor air quality, and rodent and insect problems.

“Through no fault of the employees doing the vital work of cleaning and maintenance, Delta schools are now dirtier and less hygienic than they have been for a long, long time,”

Delta Teachers’ Association president Paul Steer says Delta schools are not being well maintained.

Steer added.

Noting there’s nothing left to cut when it comes to classroom personnel, Steer said another concern by teachers is that administration seems to be growing without showing any tangible improvements in Delta’s class size and composition.

“When the board adds administrative positions or raises administrative salaries when they fail to add classroom teaching positions or provide more direct teaching services for students and students with special needs, teachers begin to question the basis of these decisions.”

Steer said teachers want more teaching and educational assistant support, including more learning assistant time for students

who need the help. He said although Delta’s enrollment is declining, the number of students with special needs is increasing.

The board also heard from former trustee Donna Burke, representing the Reach Child and Youth Development Society, who called on the board not to make further cuts to staff that help vulnerable children.

Teacher Trevor Spilchen told trustees a shortage of educational assistants is impacting student learning.

The board endorsed a motion Tuesday passed at a recent B.C. School Trustees Association meeting that would have staff at districts develop a document outlining a rationale for increased funding.

Twenty-five years after the brutal double slaying that shocked a quiet community, and after almost 23 years in prison, Derik Lord continues to maintain his innocence.

Lord was one of three teens convicted in the killing of his friend’s mother and grandmother in a murder-for-hire inheritance plot in Tsawwassen nearly a quarter-century ago.

According to police at the time, Lord and friend David Muir were hired by Darren Huenemann to kill his mother and grandmother, Sharon Huenemann and Doris Leatherbarrow, so he could get his multi-milliondollar inheritance.

The three teens lived in Saanich at the time and at trial the prosecution argued that on the day of the murders, Oct. 5, 1990, Huenemann and his girlfriend dropped Lord and Muir off at the ferry terminal. The pair then went to Leatherbarrow’s Tsawwassen home and, after being invited in for dinner by the two women, bludgeoned and stabbed them to death. The two teens then took the ferry home and were picked up

by Huenemann and his girlfriend.

Following an investigation, all three were arrested, tried and convicted. Lord began serving his sentence on June 3, 1992.

Lord and Muir were both sentenced to life in prison with no chance of parole for 10 years. Huenemann received a life sentence with no chance of parole for 25 years.

After his conviction, Muir, who had pleaded not guilty at trial, admitted his role in the murders and has been out on parole for over a decade. He was granted day parole in April 2002 and full parole a year later.

Now in his early 40s, Lord has never changed his story, continues to insist he is innocent and remains behind bars at the Matsqui Institution in Abbotsford.

“I maintain that I had no involvement in the offence,” Lord told the Parole Board of Canada at his latest parole hearing last week.

Inmates who are eligible for parole have their status automatically reviewed by the board every two years.

They can also reapply on an annual basis.

The board does not, however, deal with the question of innocence or guilt. It only assesses an inmate’s risk of re-offending if released.

“It’s pretty clear that Mr. Lord is ready, willing and able to take some steps forward,” Gratl told the parole board hearing.

For his part, Lord acknowledges that his stance has put him in a unique situation.

“This is a horrible thing and I understand that my position makes it difficult ... to move forward,” he told the hearing before the panel broke to make a decision.

“I would ask to be considered to start moving forward ... to start working back into the community.”

In handing down the decision last Thursday, Whitely said the board recognized Lord’s progress and his strong family support — his wife and mother were at the hearing — however because the board does not have the benefit of any insight into the crime it is unable to safely conclude at this time that he would be at a minimum risk to the community if released.

Family members of Doris Leatherbarrow and Sharon Huenemann are the last to file into the conference room where the parole hearing for Derik Lord is taking place.

Lord sits with his back to them and has been instructed not to turn around.

They have been to every parole hearing since David Muir and Derik Lord were first eligible for parole in 2002.

Darren Huenemann was sentenced to life without parole for 25 years and is not yet eligible for parole.

Leatherbarrow’s sister, Annie Ward, recently moved to B.C., but in the past made the trip from Toronto for the hearings.

She said they were close and after the hearing she holds back tears as she recounts their many travels together.

At each hearing, the family is given a chance to read a statement to the board. Leatherbarrow’s brother, John Kriss, stands and speaks on behalf of the family. He calls Lord cruel, inconsiderate and a liar.

“The families of the homicide (victims) do not get parole from their grief,” Kriss said. “Derik Lord is not a manageable risk in the community.”

He said members of the victims’ family would be nervous if Lord was released.

“Derik Lord battered two frail, defenseless women and is not entitled to parole.”

Afterwards, the family said the hearings are difficult.

“The wound does not heal,” said Ed Beketa, Leatherbarrow’s brotherin-law.

“It’s just so bloody awful.” Kriss said. “It’s just so cumbersome.”

They will continue to come, however, as long as they’re able.

“Lest we forget,” said Beketa.

Car not stolen but keys taken to protect driver

The following are some of the calls the Delta police responded to in the previous week: Tsawwassen • March 1, 10 p.m., 5100-block of 11A Avenue: Complainant reported four males had stolen her car from her residence.

Investigation revealed the complainant was fairly intoxicated and had claimed someone had rummaged through her purse while she was imbibing at a local establishment. Further investigation determined the complainant’s friend had likely taken her keys in order to prevent her from driving her vehicle and had subsequently driven

her home in a different car.

The vehicle was located locked in the parking lot of the establishment with no indication that it had been stolen.

• March 1, 5:33 p.m., 56th Street and 16th Avenue: Vehicle travelling northbound on 56th Street through a green light struck a vehicle entering the intersection westbound on 16th Avenue. The driver of the offending vehicle suffered neck injuries and was transported to hospital. A third party witness verified the details of the collision.

• March 6, 6:51 p.m., 5200-block of 11th Avenue: Complainant made a late report that while she was away in February someone had drilled the gas tank of her vehicle parked in her driveway. Gas tank has been replaced and complainant reported incident for information purposes.

• March 8, 7:40 p.m., 1200-block of Pacific Drive: Complainant reported hearing a male and female in the park yell-

ing at each other and was concerned the situation might turn physical. Police attended and found two teary-eyed individuals who alleged they were arguing about their relationship.

The parties agreed the argument was over and would return to their parents’ homes.

Ladner • March 2, 11:28 p.m., 7300-block of 76th Street: Complainant left his vehicle running inside the fenced compound of his work-

place and when he returned approximately two minutes later the vehicle was gone. Police searched the area with negative results.

• March 3, 8:08 a.m., 5400-block of Westminster Avenue: Report received that sometime overnight the complainant’s vehicle, which had been parked in front of her residence, was stolen. The complainant advised she had heard a

diesel engine start at 5:45 a.m. but assumed it was her neighbour. Information regarding the vehicle entered in the police database.

• March 4, 6:29 a.m., 6400-block of 62B Street: Complainant reported to police he observed a vehicle hit another car, attempt to pass the complainant’s vehicle, and then spin out of control and end up in the ditch. Police attended and found the suspect, who admitted to his actions. The suspect was issued several violation tickets for driving

too fast for the conditions and failure to keep right of a double broken/solid line.

The vehicle was towed from the scene and the suspect transported to the bus loop.

• March 6, 2:14 p.m., Ladner Trunk Road and Highway 17: Police stopped a vehicle displaying an outdated licence plate. A check revealed the driver was currently prohibited. The driver was arrested for driving while prohibited and issued a date for court appearance.

The driver was also issued a violation ticket for driving without insurance.

MURPHY’S LAW You certainly can’t say they didn’t ask.

It appears the good folks over at municipal hall are in an inquisitive mood these days as they’ve turned to the public for some input before making three major decisions. Feedback is being sought as Delta searches for a new police chief and finalizes property tax rates, but it seems the one issue that people really want to offer their two cents on is the upcoming transportation referendum.

Ironically, it’s also the one that Delta has little control over.

You’ve got until Monday to provide Delta council with your thoughts on the idea of raising the provincial sales tax to fund transportation improvements, after which time civic staff will compile a report summarizing the responses. Given Elections B.C. will have mailed out all the ballots by the time the report makes it to the council table at the end of the month, the timing of this exercise isn’t ideal.

Ballots don’t have to be returned until late May, so there’s plenty of time for voters to digest Delta’s position, however I’m not so sure it’s going to factor greatly into personal decisions. I think most people have made up their minds when it comes to the referendum and Delta’s eventual stance will be largely immaterial to them.

The fact Mayor Lois Jackson and her council colleagues aren’t out stumping on behalf of the “yes” side like so many other municipal politicians across the region already suggests to constituents they’re not big fans of the initiative.

Jackson has also been critical of the lack of detail in the plan and has warned constituents there’s no guarantee all planned improvements will proceed even if the referendum passes. It doesn’t take much to read between the lines in those statements.

Given the “crumbs” that are coming this way from the $7.5-billion plan for the region it’s not surprising local politicians haven’t jumped on the bandwagon, but I suspect they’re waiting to hear from the electorate before formally announcing they won’t be boarding.

It doesn’t look good on a politician to be campaigning for something that isn’t embraced by voters, so what better way to ensure you’re in step than to ask the public what it thinks beforehand. I can’t imagine the feedback municipal hall receives will support the tax hike, although that doesn’t necessarily mean there isn’t an appetite out there to reduce congestion on our roads.

Nothing but compliments for community’s transit service

Editor: As a resident of South Delta and a professional who works in downtown Vancouver, I can offer nothing but compliments to TransLink and the public transit service we are provided with in our community.

I have lived in Tsawwassen for over 10 years now and only recently started taking the bus and Canada Line to work on a regular basis. This started after hearing friends and colleagues talking so enthusiastically about how they got to work using the bus and sitting in one too many lines for the George Massey Tunnel and Oak Street Bridge.

Yes, I am one of those

parents of kids who play every sport imaginable so I have an SUV the oil companies love so much. And, for years, I have been driving either to Bridgeport or all the way downtown.

Since I started taking the bus I now ask myself: “Why have I not been doing this all along?” The transit service we have in Tsawwassen is, in my opinion, awesome. I park at the South Delta Recreation Centre, a bus comes every 15 minutes and in less than an hour I am sitting at my desk with a view of Stanley Park and a coffee in my hand.

It’s relaxing, I get caught up on the news and emails, people are, for the most part, very friendly —

including the driver — and the whole thing is relatively inexpensive.

So to all those solo drivers I see in the morning lined up for the tunnel or bridge as we speed by in the bus lane, park your car, get onboard and do your part for the environment and yourself.

Oh and please vote “yes” in the referendum on funding for transit. With all the people moving out here over the years ahead, we are certainly going to need continued investment in transit services and infrastructure if we want to preserve our quality of life.

It’s a very small price to pay for what we all get in return.

Not so little hospital needs more funding Editor: First off, would everyone stop referring to Delta Hospital as that great “little” hospital. It suggests that because we are a “little” hospital we should

only receive a little part of the Fraser Health budget.

Delta Hospital is a great hospital that could be of even greater service to our area if emergency surgery could be provided 24 hours

per day, seven days a week.

Bully characterization misused in describing premier

Editor: Re: New trustee calls premier a bully, March 6 Nothing ticks me more than misuse of the term bully.

Someone needs to tell Bruce Reid that calling the premier a bully undermines the true nature of the word and lessens the impact it has on victims of bullying.

Bully is thrown around much too much these days.

With the recent drop in oil prices, some may wonder if using liquefied natural gas (LNG) remains a competitive choice for the transportation sector and remote communities.

Despite the recent declines in the price of crude, LNG is still about 50 per cent less than the wholesale price of diesel.

What may be of interest to residents of Delta is that the majority of LNG used in the province is produced in Delta at our Tilbury facility, which has been operating safely since 1971.

In fact, due to growing customer need, we broke ground last fall at the Tilbury LNG facility. The $400-million expansion will see the addition of a second storage tank with storage capacity of 1.1 million gigajoules and 34,000 gigajoules per day of additional liquefaction capacity. We expect this to be complete in fall 2016.

This project will result in a number of benefits for residents of Delta. The project is expected to employ 160 full-time workers each year for two years of construction. Last October, the Delta Chamber of Commerce hosted an event

Heavy-duty transportation customers such as Vedder Transport, Arrow Transportation Systems and Denwill Enterprises acquire LNG from the Tilbury facility.

In addition to the cost benefits, these businesses may see a 15 to 25 per cent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions over diesel; it’s cleaner, with less particulate matter.

It is for these reasons FortisBC believes LNG remains an attractive energy solution for B.C. and beyond. The increased volume of natural gas through our existing infrastructure as a result of projects like this will also lead to reduced rate pressure for our natural gas customers.

With the changing energy demands of the transportation sector, LNG provides both cost and environmental advantages for all of our natural gas customers while contributing to a strong and prosperous B.C. economy.

where our project contractor provided an opportunity for local suppliers to get involved with this project. One hundred and ten members came out to learn about opportunities.

Following commissioning, the facility will be home to a number of fulltime permanent positions.

FortisBC is also upgrading the water supply infrastructure in the area, repaving the surface of Hopcott Road, upgrading the river dike and adding public sidewalks and street lighting to surrounding streets.

B.C. businesses are increasing their competitive position through LNG, which comes from the Tilbury LNG facility. In 2014, Seaspan Ferries Corporation, which operates in Delta, ordered two new dual fuel ferries and signed on for an LNG supply agreement from FortisBC. Earlier this year, B.C. Ferries announced an agreement with us to supply LNG for three dual fuel engine ferries.

Even with the drop in oil prices, B.C. Ferries expects to realize significant savings, which will help with reducing operating costs.

B.C. Ferries is also in the process of converting its two Spirit class vessels to dual fuel.

Good hearing, poor comprehension?

The number of people who can hear well, but can’t understand what’s being said, is increasing. This is most evident in conversations and watching television.

A newly-developed hearing chip is designed to restore speech comprehension without being noticeable in the ear.

A lot of people have poor comprehension, though they actually still hear well. It becomes noticeable in conversation, watching television and asking family to repeat what’s been said.

A potential cause can be undetected loss in the high-frequency range.

This means the sensory cells in the cochlea that hear high-range sounds are damaged as a result of circulatory disorders, diabetes, sudden hearing loss or workplace noise. Hearing loss in the high-frequency range makes speech sound muffled and unclear. The person with hearing loss mixes up, or can no longer hear, consonants like s, f, t, k, h and g. Speech comprehension is particularly impaired when there is background noise or when television programs have background music. The dilemma is that people with hearing loss in the high-frequency range do not consider themselves to have a

hearing problem. They can hear deep tones with no issue, and often put difficulty understanding speech down to unclear pronunciation. However, the time soon comes when problems with comprehension become annoying.

A new hearing chip has been developed.

Swiss audiologists have developed a new hearing chip that restores speech comprehension, particularly with hearing loss in the high-frequency range. People can test the new Audéo V system by Phonak simply by calling now to do so. First, a hearing test and speech comprehension analysis is

done. Where inner-ear damage is present, a software program analyzes the difference relative to normal hearing. These values are then input into the new Venture hearing chip in the Audéo V, which precisely takes into account and balances the frequency range of the person being tested. The test phase in particular is designed to clarify how speech comprehension can be improved in various situations and what role a new technology called “Autosense OS” plays. The chip recognizes where the person being spoken to is located and amplifies only his or her voice, while ambient noise is lowered and the optimum hearing programs are seamlessly adjusted. Thanks to several synchronous microphones, the hearing system can detect sound in all directions and select the direction that speech is coming from within milliseconds. According to Swiss researchers, this significantly augments speech comprehension, especially in conversation.

Blessed place We are so fortunate here in our small southwest corner on the west coast of Canada in this specific climate bubble.

We are only in March and for a few weeks already the flowers have been peaking through the ground with vibrant colour, the buds on the trees are now popping with brilliant beauty and amazing smells are flooding our senses.

Ah ah ahchew... oh excuse me, time to pop another Claritin. Now... what was I saying? So when the phone call from family or friends further east comes through, we wrestle with the question: Do we gloat or not?

Especially this year when the rest of Canada, it seems, has to tunnel

through mountains of snow and bundle up against freezing temperatures, perhaps we would do well to remember Paul’s comment when faced with very mixed circumstances: “I’ve learned by now to be quite content whatever my circumstances. I’m just as happy with little as with much, with much as with little. I’ve found the recipe for being happy whether full or hungry, hands full or hands empty. Whatever I have, wherever I am, I can make it through anything in the One who makes me who I am.” (Philippians 4:11-13) I’m actually looking forward to my upcoming visit to New Brunswick to spend very important time with family. I may even have some fun in the snow!

Local father/daughter team takes on renovation challenge in Game of Homes BY

he father-daughter team of Ray and Crystal Moon teamed up to take on three other pairs in a new home renovation competition show airing later this month.

Billed as W Network’s biggest competition show ever, Game of Homes premieres Tuesday night. The show follows four teams of amateur home renovators as they transform houses slated for demolition into dream homes.

The homes were all moved to an empty lot on Vancouver’s waterfront, which became the set for the show.

Each team was assigned a house it had to renovate both inside and out.

The teams lived in the houses and worked around the clock to transform them, battling tight deadlines and even tighter budgets.

Crystal Moon, who grew up in Tsawwassen and now lives in Vancouver’s Kitsilano neighbourhood, said each episode of the eight-part series centres around the renovation of a different room in the house.

Two expert judges, Cheryl Torrenueva, who has appeared on Colin & Justin’s Home Heist, Restaurant Makeover and Restaurant Impossible, and Jeremy MacPherson, from The Re-Inventors, assessed the teams’ work every week with the help of a slew of celebrity guest judges, including Jillian Harris and Todd Talbot from Love It or List It, and Drew and Jonathon Scott from Property Brothers.

Crystal said she heard about the show back in the summer when she was recovering from a broken foot. She said she discounted the idea initially, but after some prompting from her boyfriend and a few friends, she decided to give it a try. However, she needed to find a teammate.

She said her boyfriend works in the hospitality industry and would likely not be able to take the time off work, so she called her dad, semi-retired football coach Ray Moon, who coaches the provincial champion South Delta Sun Devils.

“I roped him into it,” Crystal said with a smile.

The pair started the application process, which included submitting a video, examples of home renovations they’ve done — Ray helped Crystal and her boyfriend renovate their bathroom when they moved into their Kits condo — and an in-person interview.

“We had no idea it would get this far,” Crystal said.

The pair said they did the show with the goal of winning the house to give Crystal a leg up in Vancouver’s expensive housing market.

Ray said while he has no professional background or training, he’s always done projects around the house.

Crystal has a passion for design and runs a small residential interior design firm on a part-time basis.

The renovations and filming took place last year, however the winner has yet to be chosen. The winning team will be announced in a live finale in May. Crystal and Ray say they are both excited and a little nervous about what will make it on air.

While they work well together, Crystal said they butted heads right off the bat with the first major decision they had to make.

Game of Homes airs starting Tuesday, March 17 at 10 p.m.

Birds in Focus is back at the Tsawwassen Arts Centre.

A display of paintings and photo prints, Birds and their Habitat, runs until the end of the month while a reception and visual presentation is set for next Saturday.

Bird photographers Alfredo Fernandez, Jim Martin and Connor Stefanison will present their digital photos of birds that migrate through and live in the Lower Mainland and beyond. It will mark the first time Fernandez has presented at the event, while Martin and Stefanison are returning photographers. Birds in Focus organizer Ursula Easterbrook says she is hoping to raise awareness about the dangers facing migratory birds.

“I’m doing it a) because I love photography and b) because I want to make people aware of the dangers migratory birds face when we mess around with the foreshore and bogs and marshes...” she says.

The reception goes from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. while the digital photo show runs from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 21 at the Tsawwassen Arts Centre, 1172-56th St. It costs $5 to attend and advanced registration is required by calling 604-943-9437.

Easterbrook will also present a Birds in Focus photography workshop next month in Tsawwassen. It explores basic to advanced

photography skills, techniques, digital aspects, equipment selection, places to go and more. Participants are advised to bring their camera, tripod, film/card and anything else they might need to photograph birds.

There will be a practice session with captive raptors.

The workshop takes place Sunday, April 19 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Meet at Cammidge House in Boundary Bay Regional Park. Advance registration is required by calling 604-432-6359.

The workshop costs $20 and is for those 12 and up.

The phenomenon of Thrihnukagigur Visitors can be lowered into a magma-less dormant volcano

In each country we visit, my husband Rick and I keep our eyes peeled for something unique; something that cannot be seen or experienced anywhere else in the world.

While blazing around the best of Iceland’s geothermal activity of billowing geysers, steaming hot springs and thunderous waterfalls, we get wind of such a phenomenon: Thrihnukagigur.

Further investigation reveals we can be lowered “into” a volcano. After a mega-volcanic eruption the magma normally hardens, closing the crater opening.

Not so with Thrihnukagigur.

After its mega blast 4,000 years ago, an anomaly of nature occurred – the magma did not remain in the cavity.

“It’s like somebody came and pulled the plug, and all the magma ran down out of it,” volcanologist Haraldur

Sigurdsson’s explains.

We are hyped up to see this oddity of nature.

Our bus ride from Reykjavik to the volcano is on a road with more twists and turns than a pretzel.

“The reason for this is to avoid the elf and troll habitats,” our driver says, feeding the local belief in Huldufólk (hidden people).

We arrive at the foot of Bláfjöll Mountain Range – where the road ends.

Thora, our guide, meets us and leads us along a threekilometre lava field hike. At one point we pass over the split between the Eurasian and North American rift that runs northeast to southwest across Iceland.

Arriving at the small Welcome Cabin, our group of 10 is divided into three, with us in the middle group.

By the time we are fitted with a harness and helmet, it’s our turn.

or Three Peaks Crater. We will descend 120 metres into one of them.

A metal cage awaits us, one like the window washers of skyscrapers use. Pall, the operator, assures we are properly hooked to the cage frame with carabineers, and then presses a red button.

After a few jolts and the cage scraping against the rock face, we rumble slowly

into the dormant volcano’s cavernous maw.

Icy fingers run down my spine caused by more than just the four degrees Celsius at the bottom. I am blown-away with the enormity of the chamber: its ground space could hold three basketball courts and could easily fit the Statue of Liberty!

We are un-tethered and

other than being warned where not to go, we are free to wander. It is strangely emotional witnessing the results of gases, pressure and extreme temperatures of the magma that violently blasted to the surface so long ago. The colours are astounding – amber, yellow, green, russet and reds.

Humbled by this grandeur, I am rendered fossil-

still, until I hear Rick call, “Come over to this edge, you can’t miss seeing this!”

I grab onto sharp boulders and make my way over to where he gazes way down into a seemingly endless abyss of more dazzling colour in swirling patterns.

Truly a spectacle to behold.

We learn from Thora this chamber was discovered in 1974 by long-time caving enthusiast Árni B. Stefánsson, who at that time descended without a headlamp and thought it nothing more than a dark hole. Years later, this time with lighting, he was overwhelmed by what he saw and began petitioning the government on the fine line between conservation and exposing this wonder to the public.

Sleuths needed to solve Mystery in Museum The Delta Museum is looking for young detectives to help solve the latest Mystery in the Museum.

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the summer of 1950 and a report has been filed with the local police station.

Someone has robbed the Mc & Mc Store in Ladner!

The clever thieves brought a boat underneath the part of the store built over the river and drilled a hole to climb inside. The robbers took valuable items from the store without ever having to break in through a window or door.

Your job as the Delta police officer is to investigate the crime and find out the â&#x20AC;&#x153;holeâ&#x20AC;? truth. Can you catch the thief? Come to the museum and solve the crime.

Clues can be discovered throughout the museum. As you move from clue to clue, the evidence you discover will bring you closer to solving what happened to the stolen items.

Evoque remains true to its concept Philip Raphael

I

vividly recall seeing images of the Range Rover Evoque concept, small crossover SUV for the very first time.

It was around 2007 and back then it was labelled the LRX concept — the “L” standing for Land Rover, and not the more toney Range Rover brand that has secured four royal warrants which signify British Royalty’s penchant for a particular product.

And in the case of the Evoque, you certainly could not fault those “Royals,” because what started out as one of those lofty concept designs actually changed very little when it came to the off-theproduction line version — at least on the exterior.

That’s not usually the case as most manufacturers play an elaborate shell game, teasing auto fans with a elaborate, let-your-hairdown concept design that goes all too conservative once it reaches the showroom floor.

This Evoque concept had sleek, futuristic lines that tossed aside the blocky, slab-like, militaristic profile of previous “Landys” and Range Rovers.

It was not your father’s all-British, legendary SUV that looked more at home painted with zebra stripes. and on safari No, the Evoque had a gently sculpted snout with an inset cluster of high-tech headlamps and a tapered roofline that sloped rearward into the

Pretty much the same design theme was present in the Orkney grey Evoque l I got to test drive recently. While it lacked the high-tech glitz of the concept’s interior that featured touch screens for just about everything, a cradle for your iPhone, and seats that looked like they came out of an F-35 Lightning jet fighter, it did have a sense of style that straddled Range Rover’s staid sensibilities while adding a few links to its Jaguar cousins.

The first was a transmission selector dial that

rises from the centre console when you push the engine start button.

The second was an economical feature I first encountered on the super, high performance, Jaguar F-Type RS. It was an automatic engine shut off that cut the power — and fuel burn — when you came to a full stop. The engine would spring to life immediately after taking your foot off the brake. This seemed even more responsive in the Evoque than the Jaguar.

Another “Jagauresque” feature was the Evoque’s

off-the-line performance. Now, that’s not something you consider much when talking about Range Rover, at least until after the Range Rover Sport was introduced, and certainly not Land Rover.

The Evoque had acceleration most sports cars would deem acceptable thanks to its 2.0 litre, turbo charged engine that winds out 240 horsepower and 250-pound-feet of torque to all four wheels.

According Range Rover’s specs, you can expect a zero to 100 km/h time of 7.6 seconds, but my tester seemed more capable than that.

While straight performance was good, the Evoque was also up to the test of quick lane changes and cornering, which if tried in some predecessors from the Land Rover stable — the Discovery and even the Freelander felt were quite “tippy” — would have caused some white knuckle driving given their high centres of gravity.

Thankfully, the Evoque is well planted on the asphalt with its squat, road-hugging stance.

I was also pleasantly surprised with the fuel economy numbers that were true to the combined city/highway consumption of 8.4 litres/100 km that Range Rover touts.

Another nice figure was the starting price of $47,695.

While that can balloon quickly to the $60,000 range with options, the base cost means I don’t need to cough up a royal warrant of my own to get the keys to one.

The South Delta Storm won their playoff division and followed that up with a tournament win in Kelowna.

The teams put on a real show for the fans at Planet Ice in Coquitlam for the final game of the season to determine if the division playoff banner would go to South Delta Storm or be hung in the Tri Cities, home of the Predators.

The female Midget game proved to be an amazing back and forth battle showcasing spectacular plays by players and goalies on both teams. After ending in a 3-3 tie, the championship game went to a shootout where South Delta triumphed.

With barely enough time to dry their hockey gear, the team travelled to Kelowna to play in the inaugural Alley’s Angel Tournament of Hearts. After an impressive and extremely competitive four-game winning streak through the round

robin, the girls took on the Vanderhoof Bears in the gold medal game.

Scoreless until the middle of the third period, South Delta found another gear and notched three goals to claim the tourney title.

The team is comprised of Claire Kozak (goalie), Lexine Ashe, Sophie Cook, Devon Davis, Cayla Edwards, Kaitlyn Gellatly, Brooklyn Hawksworth, Lauren Howlett, Layne Jackson, Jenny Manojlovic, Julia McDougall, Megan Rough, Brenna Tasse, Paisley Wallace and Juliana White.

Head coach Todd Jackson is assisted by Dave Ashe, Fenton Davis, Dan Hawksworth and Grant Wallace.

Canadians face Chiefs in major midget semifinals The Greater Vancouver Canadians are on to the B.C. Major Midget League semifinals after knocking off the Okanagan Rockets in Kelowna last weekend.

The Canadians eliminated the Rockets, the defending league champions, with a 2-0 victory last Saturday after taking a marathon 4-3 triple overtime win in Game 1 of the best-of-three quarterfinal series.

Goaltender Matteo PalerChow was in net for the Canadians in both games

and “stood on his head” in the series, said head coach Phil Alalouf.

Greater Vancouver now plays the Vancouver North East Chiefs in the semis.

The series begins tonight in Port Coquitlam.

Alalouf is predicting the series against the Chiefs will go to a third and deciding game.

“They’re a tough team,” he said, noting the group has a high-end offence combined with good goaltending and defence.
