The Delta Hospital Foundation celebrated a record donation Wednesday toward its ambitious capital campaign to expand the laboratory and diagnostic imaging departments. A large crowd of supporters and others, including provincial Health Minister Terry Lake, were on hand for the celebration of the $2.5 million donation by the Toigo family to move the project closer to its fundraising goal. The single biggest dona-

tion ever for the Delta Hospital Foundation, the Toigo family’s Shato Holdings Ltd. provided the generous gift for the new hospital wing, which the foundation announced will be named the Peter C. and Elizabeth Toigo Diagnostic Services Building. Lake announced the provincial government has formally approved the expansion. Ron Toigo, who was in attendance with his mother Elizabeth, talked about how his late father moved to Delta in 1964 and how the family understands the importance of the hospital for the com-

munity. He said his mother decided the project was very important to her, as it became for the rest of the family, when they learned more about it. The Toigo donation is part of a $7.5 million fundraising campaign by the foundation, the biggest it has ever undertaken. Fraser Health has agreed to pick up the rest of the estimated $12.5 million cost. The foundation still has about $1 million to go to reach its target. Part of the hospital’s long-term master plan, the expansion would

see the medical imaging and laboratory medicine departments facilitate an additional 32,000 patients annually. “We are very grateful for the generosity of the Toigo family and Shato Holdings Ltd. and its commitment to support community health care,” said Delta Hospital Foundation chair Allan Baydala. He noted that since 2003, Shato Holdings and the Toigo family have given over $2.75 million to the Delta Hospital Foundation to support various projects. this January, said the expansion and improvement of diagnostic services at Delta Hospital will ensure medical staff can deliver the very best in care and ensure patients are receiving faster and more precise diagnosis and treatment. Thanking the Toigo family on behalf of Premier Christy Clark, Lake told the audience the project is an example of the work going on across the province to increase efficiency, reduce impacts on hospitals and ensure the very best See DONATION page 3

It’s going to be big — really big — bringing a dramatic change to South Delta’s retail landscape all on its own. After much speculation, last year brought confirmation that a Walmart would be part of the massive shopping mall development now under construction at the Tsawwassen First Nation. Walmart Canada will open a store to anchor Tsawwassen Commons, a 550,000-square-foot outdoor mall being built adjacent to Tsawwassen Mills, a 1.2-million-squarefoot fashion mall. Both are scheduled to open in May of 2016. It’s part of an aggressive expansion effort by the world’s largest retailer. The Tsawwassen location will be a “supercentre,” a type of store the chain has begun to move forward in its quest for retail dominance. Earlier this year, Walmart Canada celebrated the grand openings of 11 supercentres to complete its expansion for the last fiscal year. Those projects brought Walmart Canada’s store count to 394, which includes 280 supercentres.

SANDOR GYARMATI

The new Walmart anchor store planned for Tsawwassen Commons, which is currently under construction, will be one of the chain’s supercentres. Noting the Tsawwassen store still has to go through approval processes, thus it can’t formally announce details just yet, Walmart Canada spokesperson Alex Robertson told the Optimist new supercentres are typically in the 150,000-squarefoot range. “All our growth right now is mostly about growing the fresh food offering and expanding access for

customers through our ecommerce business,” he said. “So on the fresh side, adding essentially a full complement of groceries to a store is what happens when we make it into a supercentre.” Robertson noted supercentres carry everything from shoes to appliances, while also stocking a larger selection of perishable

foods as well as a larger pantry area for dry goods. The goal is to make it as easy for customers to get everything they need in one trip. “Time being a new valuable commodity, you can save money and get everything in one go and that’s what we’re trying to support,” he said. According to Walmart Canada, “Walmart super-

centres offer a full line of groceries including bakery goods, deli, meat and dairy products as well as fresh produce. This is in addition to the existing departments including electronics, home décor and apparel, creating a one-stop shopping destination dedicated to everyday low prices. Supercentres may also be home to a pharmacy, vision centre, connection centre for wireless services, photo centre, portrait studio, Tire Lube Express for automotive services, Good to Go! Lotto, McDonald’s and Western Union.” Being developed by the Property Development Group, Tsawwassen Commons will feature more than 100 retail spaces. It has already confirmed Canadian Tire, Rona, Petsmart and others as tenants. Property Development Group chair Laurence Rank recently told the Optimist the mall also has enough space to grow in the future, although expansion isn’t being considered at this time. Rank said he doesn’t envision a potential expansion including an office tower, but residential development and a hotel could one day be in the cards.

Hospital group still waiting for meeting

DONATION from page 1 patient care. “We know that we need to look after a growing and aging population. We need to provide health care that is not only responsive but is efficient,” Lake said. “One of the things we strive to do in British Columbia is observe the Institute for Health Care Improvement three tenants, which is improved health outcomes for patients, improved population health and value for money. We need to optimize resources to make health care sustainable because, we know, all across Canada, you can’t continue to increase health care costs six, seven or eight per cent every year; it simply isn’t sustainable,” he added. The capital campaign has received generous contributions from other community members as well, such as the Delta Hospital Auxiliary, but foundation executive director Veronica Carroll said the Toigo donation should help build momentum as they turn to the community to help raise the remaining $1 million. Since 1988, the foundation has raised over $30 million. The goal is to have the new two-storey wing built in 2018.

They’re still hoping for a meeting with the minister. Members of the Friends of Delta Hospital attended Wednesday’s announcement at the facility, wanting to keep a low enough profile while still making their presence known. Wearing “Save Our Hospital” buttons, the group’s members said the day was a fitting celebration of the Delta Hospital Foundation’s efforts to fundraise for the diagnostic imaging and medical laboratory departments. What the group is hoping to get is a meeting with Health Minister Terry Lake, who attended the announcement but wasn’t able to meet with anyone from the group, nor any of the doctors that day. Dr. Robert Shaw

with Delta Hospital Medical Staff Association said they haven’t heard back from anyone regarding a meeting with the minister to discuss their concerns. Delta North MLA Scott Hamilton at a community meeting about the hospital last month said he would try to arrange such a meeting. At Wednesday’s event at the hospital, Hamilton noted it’s still in the works. Delta council last week approved a series of actions in support of Friends of Delta Hospital and the doctors’ group, including requesting a meeting of their own between Lake and Mayor Lois Jackson and CEO George Harvie. Mayor reviews state of community for AGM BY

DAVE WILLIS

dwillis@delta-optimist.com

Mayor Lois Jackson touched on a range of topics during a “state of the community address” at the Delta Chamber of Commerce’s annual general meeting Wednesday. A number of priority capital projects have been identified, she told the audience at the Delta Town and Country Inn. They include major improvements to Delta Street and Arthur Drive in Ladner and 112th Street in North Delta, rehabilitation work at the Delta Museum along with the construction of a new emergency operations centre and fire hall and training facility at the Boundary Bay Airport. In addition, council is committed to continuing its investment in the neighbourhood road improvement program, she said, noting this year the engineering department is gearing up to undertake 18 new road projects. The municipality will be undertaking a facility condition assessment on all of its 80 civic buildings, she added, noting the results of the assessment will be used to prioritize a rehabilitation program that Delta can plan and budget for over the next four years. “Our challenge will be finding a way to fund all of these capital projects while staying committed to our no new borrowing philosophy,” she said, adding Delta, which had a $58 million debt in 2000, should be debt free “very shortly.” The mayor said staff continue to leverage Delta’s project dollars by seeking grant funding opportunities and that between 2009 to 2015 the Corporation successfully completed 16 large capital projects with a construction value of over

$66.8 million. Of that dollar figure she said Delta was successful in acquiring $38 million in grants and other funding. Next week the mayor, along with Coun. Ian Paton, CAO George Harvie and fire chief Dan Copeland, will travel to Ottawa to meet with federal ministers and senior bureaucrats to further Delta’s interests. “These trips have proven to be invaluable in the past and a wise investment for our future,” she said. This year’s property tax increase is targeted at 2.99 per cent with about half a per cent targeted for municipal operations. The rest will go towards Delta’s capital infrastructure programs. The mayor went on to say that perhaps the most significant challenge from a corporate perspective for this term of Delta council will be the proposed Terminal 2 expansion at Roberts Bank. In addition to port related truck congestion she is concerned about land speculation around the port, Jackson said. “Delta’s agricultural land is under pressure, ladies and gentlemen.” She said moving a small percentage of containers, for instance to an inland terminal in Ashcroft, could mean less congestion on local roads, fewer environmental impacts and less demand to develop agricultural land for container storage. Jackson said she is pleased the province has committed to start working on a bridge to replace the George Massey Tunnel. She noted Delta is working with the province to ensure the new bridge meets the connectivity needs of local residents and businesses. Delta is seeking a redesign of the Highway 99 and

Highway 17A interchange, enhanced cycling improvements across the bridge and provision of transit only lanes that can be converted in the future to “rapid transit opportunities.” She said she has directed staff to investigate the possibility of expanding a seniors bus program, launched in North Delta in 2013, to South Delta. Outgoing chamber board of directors chair Orville Nickel said while 2013 was a difficult year for the chamber, 2014 was a year of rebuilding and success. Delta Optimist general manager Dave Hamilton will serve as the new chair. PHOTO BY

Marijuana odour gets car towed from border

The purpose of the Crime Beat is to educate and inform the public about some of the property crime trends occurring in South Delta and other files of interest. If you see anything occurring that you believe to be suspicious, call 911 for in-progress crimes and emergencies or 604-9464411 for other assistance. The following are some of the calls the Delta police responded to in the previous week: Ladner • March 9, 9:08 a.m., 5100-block of Central Avenue: Report received that power wires had been cut to two homes under construction. Wires not removed but damage approximately $3,500. Police patrolled the area in case the suspects attempted to return to remove the cut wire. • March 10, 2:24 a.m., 5000-block of 48th Avenue: Report received that a male was observed fleeing from the west side door of a business. Police attended and found the side door drilled out. The till was found empty and discarded on the floor. A K9 unit attended but results were negative. • March 12, 7:45 p.m., 4900-block of 56th Street: Complainant reported she heard banging at her door but did not answer. When she checked the front door later in the evening she found a red liquid that smelled like raspberries dripping down the door.

Neighbourhood canvas by police proved negative. • March 12, 6:56 p.m., 6200-block of River Road: Complainant reported that during the evening someone had broken into her vehicle parked at her residence. The complainant believes she had accidentally left her trunk open after unloading groceries. Golf clubs and a curling broom left in her trunk were stolen. No suspects or witnesses. • March 13, 6:50 p.m., 3900-block of Arthur Drive: Complainant left her vehicle parked in the area and when she returned she found the front passenger side window smashed and her purse that she had left on the front seat had been stolen. Purse contained credit and debit cards, identification cards and cash. No other items missing from vehicle. • March 14, 9:27 p.m., 5800-block of Cove Link Road: Complainant reported hearing the alarm go off at her neighbour’s house and observing a male fleeing the house and drive off. Police attended and observed that items in the home appeared untouched. Police indicated the thief was likely scared off by the alarm and fled the area without disturbing the scene or obtaining any property. Tsawwassen • March 9, 8:19 p.m., 5100-block of 11A Avenue: Report received that complainant’s vehicle was stolen from her driveway.

Information regarding the vehicle entered in the police database. • March 10, 3 p.m., Point Roberts border crossing: Border officers detained two males crossing the border in a rental vehicle that was emitting a strong odour of marijuana. The driver admitted to smoking marijuana approximately one hour prior to driving. Police attended and issued a 24-

hour roadside suspension and the vehicle was towed from the scene. • March 10, 3:32 p.m., Augusta Place: Complainant reported his unlocked vehicle parked in his driveway had been entered and the garage door opener had then been used to enter the garage. An unlocked vehicle in the garage was also entered and the suspect then fled the residence with the garage

door openers from both vehicles. Police canvassed the neighbourhood and found another unlocked vehicle that had been entered and a wallet containing bank cards and personal information stolen. • March 12, 2:11 a.m., 1200-block of 56th Street: Police found a male in a vehicle parked in the mall parking lot who claimed he had lost his key and was locked out of his father’s residence. He indicated he had rung the door buzzer

but that his father had not responded. Police transported the male to his father’s home and assisted him in gaining entrance to the residence. • March 15, 1:20 a.m., Glen Abbey Place: Complainant reported thieves had gained entry to his residence by using the garage door opener he had left in his unlocked vehicle parked in the driveway. MURPHY’S LAW When you see a price tag these days, it’s quite likely it ends in 99 so as to give the appearance the product or service isn’t quite as expensive as it might actually be. Whether it’s a sandwich and fries for $8.99, a pair of shoes for $99 or a new car for $19,999, the idea of pushing the price to that next jump, but not quite going over, is pervasive in the marketplace. I suspect there’s got to be something at play in our subconscious, that even though we fully recognize a bottle of shampoo that costs $5.99 is in essence six bucks, the fact the first number in the price is a five somehow factors not only into our thought process but also our buying habits. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with the practice — it’s a savvy marketing approach used the world over — but at its core it’s really just a game to get potential buyers to believe the product is a little cheaper. You wouldn’t think your local government would adopt such an approach — it’s not like swimming pool admissions are $3.99 — but I see once again the property tax increase is proposed to be 2.99 per cent, which I’m guessing municipal hall doesn’t want homeowners to confuse with a much larger three per cent hike. Forgive me for being a cynic, but it’s hard to believe those over at the hall crunched the budget numbers and the end result just happened to come out at 2.99, particularly given the connotation that comes with a figure ending in that way. Just like retailers around the globe, this has the look of a deliberate attempt to make people think they’re paying less. I expect that when I go to a store, but it’s not terribly reassuring when my local government is trying to pull the same trick. Perhaps I’m being naïve to expect the spin cycle not to be applied to something as political as a tax bill, but it’s disconcerting nonetheless. Ironically, I think a property tax increase that’s not a round number could actually work in municipal hall’s favour if it was played correctly. If the proposed tax hike was, say, 2.93 or 3.06 per cent, it might get people thinking civic officials waged battle with the budget and this was the absolute lowest they could go and still maintain necessary services. It might not be an entirely accurate representation of the situation, but the randomness of the number could well suggest every effort was made to keep costs in check. The 2.99 figure, however, sends a completely different message to taxpayers.

COMMUNITY COMMENT A major opportunity for the Delta school district made for some engaging discussion last week at the legislature in Victoria. A delegation from the district, including superintendent Dianne Turner, board of education chair Laura Dixon, director for the KPU Institute of Sustainable Horticulture Dr. Kent Mullinix and myself met with Delta North MLA Scott Hamilton, Minister of Agriculture Norm Letnick, Minister of Education Peter Fassbender and staff. In the cozy confines of the Birch Room, we talked about pickles. Project Pickle has been a huge success in the district and children in our community are learning about food and the food system while enjoying the benefits of home grown produce. In the classroom and on the school neighbourhood farm, kids in our district are keeping their fingers dirty. The Ministry of Education recently announced its “Innovation Strategy” designed to engage students with individualized and new

MADE WITH

Tax money funding ‘yes’ push

Editor: Re: Don’t see advantages of proposed rapid bus, letter to the editor, March 6 I have a number of questions concerning the upcoming referendum on our transit system and agree with the comments made in Adrian Wightman’s letter. South Delta does not require another park-andride, especially if it ends up like the TransLink-inspired fiasco on the south side of Highway 99 and King George Boulevard that is so rarely used it has become somewhere to teach new drivers.

My main question, however, is who authorized taxpayers’ money to finance the “yes” campaign and is same amount being given to the “no” side? The answer I received from a representative of the Mayors’ Council on Regional Transportation is that money was authorized by the provincial government and an equal amount is available to both sides. Unfortunately, there apparently isn’t an official “no” campaign group so no money has been asked for or issued. Maybe it’s time for a spe-

cific “no” group to step forward rather than a number of well intended individuals. At least they could then apply for and be given an equal opportunity to receive funding from the government purse. Once again I feel taxpayers are being kept in the dark on how our money is being spent and now we are now being asked to give many millions more to a group of people that has shown a total lack of responsibility in dealing with our transit dollars in the past. Richard Turner

Don’t let planned improvements slip away

Editor: I will be voting in favour of the mayors’ plan for a 0.5 per cent raise in provincial sales tax for improvement of transportation and transit in Metro Vancouver. Despite controversy surrounding the issue of TransLink and provincial responsibility, it is my opinion this referendum is an important opportunity to improve greatly needed active transportation of transit, cycling and pedestrian access for the ecological and economic health of the region.

The more transit, cycling and pedestrian access that is available, the more people will get out of their cars, which will result in less gridlock for drivers. The result will be less air pollution and significant health benefits for active transportation participants as well improved public safety on the roads. Economic benefits are also significant. Gridlock costs money in lost productivity and is the blocked arteries of a dysfunctional transportation system. What is needed is healthy

transportation for a healthy, vibrant and growing community. Urgent need for greater transportation connectivity for a growing Metro Vancouver is clear. The means before us may not be perfect but it is a plan to take us towards the goal of improved transportation. Let’s vote for the continuing update of transportation options and connections to benefit Delta and its residents as partners of Metro Vancouver. Carol Vignale

Referendum being held only to put onus on the public

Editor: The first thing that causes me to stop and wonder about this referendum is why is it being held in the first place? When Glen Clark wanted to build the fast ferries, did he ask the public? When Gordon Campbell wanted to sell B.C. Rail, did he ask the public? When it was decided to build the new highway to Whistler, or the Golden Ears and Port Mann bridges or the South Fraser

Perimeter Road, I don’t recall having a vote. So why are we being asked on this one? Personally, I believe it is to shift blame and that’s it. If we vote “yes,” then our money is taken for as long as tax can be taken, and used with no further input from the public. If we vote “no,” then politicians can blame all future traffic snarls on voters who didn’t want to spend more money. Either way nobody is

responsible in government and either way the public pays or is to blame. I’ve seen the letters of support saying that voting “no” will lead to future traffic gridlock because experts predict Vancouver will be a million people bigger in the near future. Well, five years ago the province said it wouldn’t replace the George Massey Tunnel for 40 years, and Glen Clark said his ferries would cut travel time to the

island in half, so I wouldn’t put much faith in that population projection. Vancouver has the most expensive home prices in Canada and the folks that can pay $5 million for a house aren’t riding the bus. I believe the proper solution rests in: • Getting a TransLink board made up of civil engineers and planners, not political appointments. • Stop building all the offices downtown and the

affordable housing in the suburbs. • Encourage business to locate outside of downtown and financially reward them for doing so. • Reward business for staggered hours of operation instead of everyone starting work at 9 a.m. and leaving at 4 p.m. • Listen to the people who commute everyday... collectively their knowledge is superior to all else. • Build much more

affordable housing for university students to keep them off the roads. • Take a very close look at how TransLink already wastes our money, and I think it would be obvious it doesn’t need more money. • Take a serious look at London, Los Angeles and numerous other cities: mass transit doesn’t solve the problems. I assume you know how I’m voting. Greg Hoover

Deadlines We all face them: school assignments, work projects, filing taxes, writing articles and many more. Deadlines are a fact of life. Sometimes they are our friends, giving us parameters and motivating us to get at it. Sometimes they feel like enemies, cranking up the stress level in an already over stressed life. We can’t avoid deadlines, but we can choose how we deal with them. We can fight them, ignore them and then drop everything to cram at the last minute. Or we can use them to plan ahead so that we have time to do the job well and relaxed. Procrastinators (like me) have a hard time identifying with that last option. Sometimes missing deadlines isn’t all that big of a deal — ask for more

time, file for an extension, promise to get it in by the end of the week. Sometimes missing deadlines can mean the difference between pass or fail, job or no job, even life or death. There is a deadline you don’t want to miss: being ready for eternity. Jesus told stories to warn us to live ready to die because we don’t know when that day will come. Hebrews 9:27 reminds us that “people are destined to die once, and after that to face judgment.” 2 Corinthians 6:1-2 says: “We urge you not to receive God’s grace in vain ... now is the time of God’s favor, now is the day of salvation.” Don’t put that deadline off. The stakes are too high. Mike invites dialogue at mike@ ladnerbaptist.ca.

Locals in running for Home Builders’ Ovation Awards

The Greater Vancouver Home Builders’ Association recently announced its 2015 Ovation awards finalists and there are a few locallybased companies on the list. The awards honour excellence in the design and construction of new singlefamily and multi-family homes, as well as the renovation of existing homes, across Metro Vancouver.

Building and renovating homes today has become highly technical, said Bob de Wit, CEO of the Greater Vancouver Home Builders’ Association (GVHBA). “With continued changes to the building bylaws and technological advancements, building homes is like a science. It is to your advantage to work with award-winning, certified

professionals.” Tsawwassen-based interior design firm Sarah Gallop Design Inc. (SGDI) has a total of nine nominations — six as the primary nominee and another three as an associate. The designer has two nominations for Best Kitchen Renovation — $50,000-$99,999; Best Addition Renovation; Best Townhouse/Condominium

Renovation — $200,000 and over; Best Renovation — $500,000-$799,999; and Best New Kitchen — $100,000 and over. As well as nominations as an associate for Best Renovated Room; Best Renovation — $300,000-$499,999; and Best Renovation — $800,000 and over. Kemp Construction, which is also based in

Delta-based Vancouver ICF is nominated for Excellence in Technological Innovation in Residential Construction, a new award category added this year. “We felt it was important to acknowledge advancements to technology within the industry,” de Wit said. The awards will be handed out at a gala on Saturday, April 25.

Tsawwassen, is named as an associate on one of SDGI’s Best Kitchen Renovation nominations. Kenorah Design/ Build Ltd. is nominated for three awards: Best Kitchen Renovation — $50,000-$99,999; Best Bathroom Renovation — Under $35,000; and Best Renovation — $300,000$499,999.

Horsing Around in Delta From Myth to Reality Riding at Unicorn By Kimberly Couper, Unicorn Stables Ltd.

Throughout my childhood, riding horses was always a mythical and seemingly unattainable dream. I watched equestrian shows on TV and played with toy horses, but it wasn’t until the age of 23 that I started actively searching for a barn where I could take riding lessons. As a city girl taking public transit, I was thrilled to find Unicorn Stables’ Burnaby location a short walk from the Skytrain station. Who knew there was a little bit of country tucked away between the Lougheed Highway and the Trans Canada freeway? Surrounded by trees, it hosts both an indoor and an outdoor arena, stables for several horses, and access to a large network of trails through Burnaby Lake park. I was nervous showing up for my first lesson. It isn’t always easy for adults to start a new sport, and it can be humiliating to be in a class with children who are far better than you. Thankfully horses don’t care about your age or gender, and the coaches at Unicorn make everyone feel at ease. Soon I was progressing from trotting to cantering and even jumping. However, Unicorn stables in Burnaby, as convenient and beautiful as it is, has its limitations due to the small size of its location. To go beyond weekly lessons in an arena, I made the transition to the Surrey barn. There is always a lot happening at Unicorn in Surrey, from stable management and groundwork lessons to spring break and summer camps. It’s a short ride to Watershed Park for excellent trails, and there is a large field on site with a ditch, hill, and obstacles to jump. What really sets Unicorn apart though, is how they accommodate the “horseless” rider. Horses are a massive time and financial commitment, and owning is not realistic for many of us. At Unicorn, quality lesson horses are available for lease and can be taken to shows. Unicorn organizes jumping and dressage schooling shows on site so students can practice and gain skills in a low pressure environment. They

attend many local shows throughout the year, as well as shows in the USA, so there is no shortage of amazing opportunities even if you don’t have your own horse. The best thing about the barn though, for me at least, is that it truly feels like a family. From the superb team of coaches to the other riders and students, everyone is always smiling and willing to help towards the common goal of becoming better horse people. Whether your goal is to show at a competitive level or just have fun learning about horses, the staff at Unicorn in Burnaby and Surrey are positive, friendly, and committed to helping each student attain their riding goals. I’m so glad I took that first step with Unicorn and turned my dreams into reality.

Get weedy with Earthwise

Plenty of jobs to go around at weekly Weedy Wednesdays BY

DAVE WILLIS

dwillis@delta-optimist.com

There’s more than just weeding going on during Weedy Wednesdays at Earthwise Garden and Farm in Tsawwassen. “There’s always something for everybody to do,” says Corinne Imrie, event and program coordinator at Earthwise. The society is always willing to have more help on the volunteer drop-in day, she says. Besides weeding volunteers can take part in seeding, raking, pruning or whatever needs to be done, she says. “It’s Weedy Wednesday, we really want people out in the garden, but we will find something for everybody regardless of their abilities or skill level,” says Imrie. Earthwise welcomes volunteers any time of the week, says organic grower/educator Charlotte Konken, but Weedy Wednesday is focused on a more social atmosphere. You can meet new people, see what other gardeners are doing and learn from each other, she says. “We’re all interested in gardening and farming. We all have different experiences and backgrounds. It’s kind of a place to throw around ideas.” Volunteer Sue Earles says helping out is therapeutic. She also enjoys working outdoors, getting away from that office atmosphere and getting some fresh air. The retired teacher used to bring her class to the garden and just kept coming after she retired. Another volunteer, Natascha Trautmann, says she gets a lot out of it and says it’s been a great learning experience. Weedy Wednesdays goes from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. New volunteers are always welcome. Earthwise has also recently started a Farm Friday, another volunteer drop-in running from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Fridays with a focus on the farm area. The Earthwise Society, 6400-3rd Ave., Tsawwassen, also has a volunteer open house planned for Tuesday, March 31 from 7 to 8 p.m. For more on Earthwise, call 604-946-9828 or visit the society’s website at www.earthwisesociety.bc.ca.

Gym etiquette – avoiding the seven deadly sins p.j. wren

Well on Your Way The other day when I was at the bank, the nice young guy behind the desk (jeez, that line made me sound old!) suggested I write about gym etiquette.

Apparently he recently had a few experiences with gym-goers who did not respect those around them because they were oblivious to the sins they were committing. This lack of gym etiquette could be due to one of three reasons: First, they are new to the whole gymgoing experience and don’t know any better. It’s like when you were learning

how to ride a bike. The pedaling part you knew about, cause you’d seen it, but the getting on the bike, staying on the bike and braking was not something you could visually teach yourself. It had to be taught to you. Second, there’s the gymgoer who is a frequent participant of going to the gym, but is just unaware of the fact they are one sweat drop away from having a

dumbbell thrown at them. And finally, there’s the third type of gym-goer who couldn’t care less about those around them and strut around like they own the place. This article is not going to help them. A dumbbell dropped on their toe on the other hand... Now, I don’t hang out in gyms much anymore (one of the perks of having a gym in my home), but I do

Visit us on your smartphone: OpenRoadHyundai.com

remember the usual gym etiquette sins and they can be boiled down to these seven. • Thou shall not hog the equipment. Yes we get it, you like to super set your program, however just make sure that others around you can work in on that piece of equipment as well. For new gym-goers, if you would like to use a piece of equipment that someone else is on, simply ask them and work in when their set is done. • You shall have no cell phones on the gym floor. There is nothing worse than seeing “selfies” being taken and texts being exchanged back and forth while working out. Not only is this just ridiculous to witness, it also takes away from your own workout. Trust me, your Instagram account will survive the 45 minutes without an update. • Remember, you are not the only one. If you like to listen to music, great, just no singing, humming, whistling or even head banging. Leave that for the drive home. • Honour your workout partners. Don’t clang your weights, drop your weights, and grunt and groan through your set. We are struggling right beside you too, but you don’t hear us sounding like a wounded Beluga whale while doing so. • Thou shall not smell. Working out can be stinky business and that’s why they

make this amazing product called deodorant. So, please use it. With that being said, don’t swing the other end of the pendulum and douse yourself in perfume, cologne, hairspray or stinky body lotion. While you may believe you smell like a garden of roses, the rest of us are holding our breath, which is really challenging to do while working out. • You shall remember to wipe. Sweating is messy business, so please wipe up after yourself. I suggest you bring a towel to the gym and sit on it, use it to drape over any gym equipment that you use and lay it down as a barrier between you and the mat when you lie down to stretch. • On a completely separate note, if you are sick, please stay at home. The biggest cesspool of germs originates in two places: kids and gym equipment. Don’t add to the cesspool. In the end, nobody is watching you. Probably one of the biggest fears a new gym-goer has is that others are watching them and judging them. With that said, you will be happy to hear that couldn’t be farther from the truth. In fact, everyone in the gym is far too concerned with what’s going on with them; you are just a blip on their radar. So fear not, go forth and be fit. Getting to the soul of Central America BY

icaragua’s old capital, León proves the most distinctive destination of many excursions during a recent Panama Canal cruise. In the centre of this venerable city stands World Heritage León Cathedral. Blending a unique baroque flair and neo-classical grandeur, a haloed Virgin Mary stands gloriously atop. And just below, sculpted pairs of husky Atlanteans support the heavy beams between its central gable and bell towers. Interestingly, these supermen refer subtly to the 17th century’s vision of Atlantis and its link to the New World. The façade’s 12 ornamental columns conjure the eras of Rome and Greece. “The topmost statue represents Maximo Jerez, an early Nicaraguan president and liberal thinker,” explains guide Miguel. Strolling onward, Miguel tells us how cathedral architecture was adapted to this area’s perilous terrain. Studying the low profile and thick walls, we can understand how it’s survived earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and warfare. Inside, Christ’s 12 apostles adorn soaring columns. Miguel mentions that during cathedral construction, prominent citizens bought tombs below the marble floor. Nine wealthy notables, 10 bishops, five priests and three poets are entombed here. Ruben

The León Cathedral rooftop covers almost an acre.

Dario’s tomb rests just below Saint Paul. There, a marble lion weeps for Nicaragua’s world-renowned poet, journalist and diplomat. “Dario’s childhood home is now a city museum,” Miguel notes. “Nicely restored, it displays Dario’s personal belongings, first editions of his work and photographs showing his literary triumphs in Paris, Madrid, Buenos Aires and Chile.” The cathedral also displays several mas-

terpieces of Spanish colonial art, among them the statue of the black Christ still retaining scars of a pirate’s sword. Our tour also offers a remarkable panoramic view of León. Entering through a cathedral’s side door, our group ascends a long, narrow spiral stairway upward to the rooftop. To explore the newly whitewashed expanse, we must remove our shoes... and wear sunglasses in order to avoid a blinding reflection. The gigantic snow-white statuary

and 34 domes remain bedazzling. Among the many bells, we examine La Libertad, which announced Central America’s independence to the world. “Great vista, eh?” Miguel proudly grins. “Perfect too for cannons. Artillery was placed here to defend Leon from conservative forces in 1824 and later against dictator Somoza’s soldiers during our 1979 revolt.” Just below stands Central America’s second oldest university, which has been graduating thinkers for centuries. These scholars likely formed the liberal factions who continually challenged the status quo. In the distance, brood eight volcanoes. Exiting the Cathedral, we stroll around the large plaza. At one corner a large mural shows the struggles of early settlers. Another depicts Sandinistas fighting Somoza’s army and the later Contras, counter-revolutionaries. Nearby, a sculpted sawdust portrait of Venezuela’s Hugo Chavez straddles the sidewalk. In this once turbulent Third World country, the plaza looks very peaceful. There are no armed police, no beggars and no desperate vendors. Motorists are rare; instead, plainly dressed folk whisper past on old bicycles. Sitting on shaded benches beneath large trees, young couples hold hands. Under colourful umbrellas near a bandstand, people sell local products. Looking over their collections of handicrafts, we buy carved wooden bowls as well as bags of dark roasted coffee and icy coca-colas.

“We chose everything we needed for just $50.00 a month. So can you.” Pre-planning final arrangements saves money, protects family and guarantees your personal wishes. Start now - it feels good knowing it’s all taken care of.

Friday can’t come soon enough South Delta Artists Guild’s weekly drop-in group staging TGIF show BY

NOREEN M. FAIRWEATHER Optimist contributor

Every week some two-dozen South Delta Artists Guild members tote their painting gear into the studio at Gallery 1710 on 56th Street thinking with a collective smile, “Thank goodness it’s Friday.” That was the day allotted to the guild in 1988 when it began renting space in the Phoenix Club, the old fire hall in Beach Grove. Friday became the starting point for the storied drop-in group it is today, the largest and most active of four offered by the guild since it moved to the Kiwanis Longhouse in 2000. TGIF, an upcoming show at Gallery 1710, features the work of drop-in participants. Subject matter is as varied as the artists’ differing interests and techniques. The West Coast always inspires varied interpretations from Wynn Dennett, Leah Terpsma, Andrew Wilson, Dolly Taylor and Geof Hacker. This is where they live and what they know. European memories often drive the work of Corinne Bucher and Doris Wright, while Scots-born Maureen Campbell-Taylor lived and worked many years in South Africa in the film industry, and continues to draw on her travels and art experience there. There is no set theme for TGIF, so a wide range of work can be enjoyed, including several paintings by award-winning artist and teacher Marlene Strain, coordinator of the show for which every member has some responsibility. A very special art form is presented by Georgia Mongeau, a long-time guild member whose imagination and colour sense led her to design and hand-hook beautiful pure wool rugs, several of which are in the show. TGIF runs March 24 to 29, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily. An opening reception will be held on Wednesday, March 25 from 6 to 8 p.m.

Workshops are free for Delta residents and provide the skills needed to garden, reduce waste and conserve water. To register for a sustainable gardening workshop, visit www.delta.ca or call 604-952-3000. Established in 2007, Delta’s free sustainable gar-

“I chose Pilates because I was looking for a whole body fitness program like Yoga but with more of a strength component. I like how Pilates builds strength, particularly in the core, and increases my flexibility. I am in as good shape as I was in my 20’s & 30’s, maybe better. This allows me to hike & ski with my 20 something sons. Pilates is a good anti-dote to my desk job spent mainly on the computer.

“I’d have to say it was one of the best experiences of my life, meeting all the people from around the world, getting to play in such a high-level competition, it was an amazing experience,” she said. Westlake, 19, played a series of singles matches, and although didn’t make it into the semis, she posted wins over Scotland and New Zealand while just coming up short against Australia.

Pricilla Westlake played mixed doubles matches with Jake Schuknecht at the 2015 World Junior Championships. She also teamed up with male champion Jake Schuknecht of Ontario for mixed doubles matches. Westlake said she learned so much at the world juniors about the game and how other countries play. The competition, held at the Broadbeach Bowls Club in Queensland, marked the

first ever world championship for Westlake, who became the first-ever player crowned national U18 and U25 champion in her 2014 season. The level of competition was very high and she noted a lot of the athletes already play for their national teams and

had taken part in the Commonwealth Games already. Westlake will take part in a number of upcoming provincial events and a Team Canada training camp next month where she could be selected to take part in the Asia Pacific Championships in New Zealand later this

year. “I’m aiming for that,” she said. Westlake said she appreciates all the support from her club (the Tsawwassen Lawn Bowling Club), Bowls Canada, her coach Stephen Forrest, and everyone who’s helped her get to where she is today.
